An optical fibre-fed superconducting electro-optic modulator with gigahertz bandwidth and attojoule per bit electric power consumption offers a fast, efficient means to connect superconducting circuits to the room temperature environment.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have shown great promise as hosts for high-purity deterministic single-photon sources. In the last few years, the underlying physics of single photon emission in 2D materials have been uncovered, and their optical properties have been improved to meet criteria for a variety of quantum technologies and applications. In this work, we take advantage of the unique characteristics of dielectric nanoantennas in manipulating the electromagnetic response on a sub-wavelength scale to localize and control defect-based single-photon emitters (SPEs) in 2D layered materials. We show that dielectric nanoantennas are capable of inducing high Purcell enhancement >20 and therefore brighter single-photon emission, which is characterized by a reduction of the emitters’ radiative lifetimes and enhancement of their brightness by more than an order of magnitude. We demonstrate that the sub-wavelength-scale dielectric nanoantennas can be designed to also impose a predetermined strain profile that determines the confinement potential of the SPE, leading to robust control over the optical polarization with up to 94% extinction ratio. The combination of large Purcell enhancement, polarization orientation, and site control through strain engineering demonstrates the advantages and unique capabilities of dielectric nanoantennas for enhancing the quantum optical properties of 2D SPEs for quantum information technologies.

A variety of quantum degrees of freedom, e.g., spins, valleys, and localized emitters, in atomically thin van der Waals materials have been proposed for quantum information applications, and they inevitably couple to phonons. Here, we directly measure the intrinsic optical phonon decoherence in monolayer and bulk MoS2by observing the temporal evolution of the spectral interference of Stokes photons generated by pairs of laser pulses. We find that a prominent optical phonon mode E2gexhibits a room-temperature dephasing time of ∼7 ps in both the monolayer and bulk. This dephasing time extends to ∼20 ps in the bulk crystal at ∼15 K, which is longer than previously thought possible. First-principles calculations suggest that optical phonons decay via two types of three-phonon processes, in which a pair of acoustic phonons with opposite momentum are generated.

As optical two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS) is extended to a broader range of applications, it is critical to improve the detection sensitivity of optical 2DCS. We developed a fast phase-cycling scheme in a non-collinear optical 2DCS implementation by using liquid crystal phase retarders to modulate the phases of two excitation pulses. The background in the signal can be eliminated by combining either two or four interferograms measured with a proper phase configuration. The effectiveness of this method was validated in optical 2DCS measurements of an atomic vapor. This fast phase-cycling scheme will enable optical 2DCS in novel emerging applications that require enhanced detection sensitivity.

Improvements in temporal resolution of single-photon detectors enable increased data rates and transmission distances for both classical and quantum optical communication systems, higher spatial resolution in laser ranging, and observation of shorter-lived fluorophores in biomedical imaging. In recent years, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have emerged as the most efficient time-resolving single-photon-counting detectors available in the near-infrared, but understanding of the fundamental limits of timing resolution in these devices has been limited due to a lack of investigations into the timescales involved in the detection process. We introduce an experimental technique to probe the detection latency in SNSPDs and show that the key to achieving low timing jitter is the use of materials with low latency. By using a specialized niobium nitride SNSPD we demonstrate that the system temporal resolution can be as good as 2.6 ± 0.2 ps for visible wavelengths and 4.3 ± 0.2 ps at 1,550 nm.

The microscale integration of mid- and long-wave-infrared photonics could enable the development of fieldable, robust chemical sensors, as well as highly efficient infrared frequency converters. However, such technology would be defined by the choice of material platform, which immediately determines the strength and types of optical nonlinearities available, the optical transparency window, modal confinement, and physical robustness. In this work, we demonstrate a new platform, suspended AlGaAs waveguides integrated on silicon, providing excellent performance in all of these metrics. We demonstrate low propagation losses within a span of nearly two octaves (1.26–4.6 μm) with exemplary performance of 0.45 dB/cm at λ=2.4  μm. We exploit the high nonlinearity of this platform to demonstrate 1560 nm-pumped second-harmonic generation and octave-spanning supercontinuum reaching out to 2.3 μm with 3.4 pJ pump pulse energy. With mid-IR pumping, we generate supercontinuum spanning from 2.3 to 6.5 μm. Finally, we demonstrate the versatility of the platform with mid-infrared passive devices such as low-loss 10 μm-radius bends, compact power splitters with 96±1% efficiency, and edge couplers with 3.0±0.1  dB loss. This platform has strong potential for multifunctional integrated photonic systems in the mid-infrared.

Multidimensional coherent spectroscopy is a powerful tool for understanding the ultrafast dynamics of complex quantum systems. To fully characterize the nonlinear optical response of a system, multiple pulse sequences must be recorded and quantitatively compared. We present a new single-scan method that enables rapid and parallel acquisition of all unique pulse sequences corresponding to first- and third-order degenerate wave-mixing processes. Signals are recorded with shot-noise limited detection, enabling acquisition times of ∼2  minutes with ∼100  zs phase stability and ∼8 orders of dynamic range, in a collinear geometry, on a single-pixel detector. We demonstrate this method using quantum well excitons, and quantitative analysis reveals new insights into the bosonic nature of excitons. This scheme may enable rapid and scalable analysis of unique chemical signatures, metrology of optical susceptibilities, nonperturbative coherent control, and the implementation of quantum information protocols using multidimensional spectroscopy.

Recent advances in the isolation and stacking of monolayers of van der Waals materials have provided approaches for the preparation of quantum materials in the ultimate two-dimensional limit1,2. In van der Waals heterostructures formed by stacking two monolayer semiconductors, lattice mismatch or rotational misalignment introduces an in-plane moiré superlattice3. It is widely recognized that the moiré superlattice can modulate the electronic band structure of the material and lead to transport properties such as unconventional superconductivity4and insulating behaviour driven by correlations5–7; however, the influence of the moiré superlattice on optical properties has not been investigated experimentally. Here we report the observation of multiple interlayer exciton resonances with either positive or negative circularly polarized emission in a molybdenum diselenide/tungsten diselenide (MoSe2/WSe2) heterobilayer with a small twist angle. We attribute these resonances to excitonic ground and excited states confined within the moiré potential. This interpretation is supported by recombination dynamics and by the dependence of these interlayer exciton resonances on twist angle and temperature. These results suggest the feasibility of engineering artificial excitonic crystals using van der Waals heterostructures for nanophotonics and quantum information applications.

In the realization of ultrasmall semiconductor lasers, cavity-QED effects are used to enhance spontaneous emission and enable the lasing threshold to be crossed with gain contributions from only a few solid-state emitters. Operation in this regime fosters correlation effects that leave their fingerprint especially in the emission dynamics of nanolasers. Using time-resolved photon-correlation spectroscopy, we show that in a quantum-dot photonic-crystal nanolaser emitting in the telecom band, second-order coherence associated with lasing is established on a different timescale than the emission itself. By combining measurements with a microscopic semiconductor laser theory, we attribute the origin to carrier-photon correlations that give rise to non-Markovian effects in the emission dynamics that are not captured by laser rate-equation theories. Our results have direct implications with respect to the modulation response, repetition rate, noise characteristics, and coherence properties of nanolasers for device applications.

The phenomenon of spectral diffusion is common to a variety of inhomogeneously broadened systems. Spectral diffusion can be quantified through the frequency–frequency correlation function (FFCF), which is often approximated using observables from a variety of experimental techniques. We present a direct measurement of the temperature-dependent FFCF for excitons in semiconductor quantum wells using two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy. This technique enables the FFCF to be quantified without making any assumptions of the FFCF dynamics. Our results show that the Gauss–Markov approximation, which assumes exponential decay dynamics of the FFCF, is only valid for sample temperatures above 50 K. We compare our results with those obtained by the ellipticity and center-line slope measurements.

Since the discovery of semiconducting monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, a variety of experimental and theoretical studies have been carried out seeking to understand the intrinsic exciton population recombination and valley relaxation dynamics. Reports of the exciton decay time range from hundreds of femtoseconds to ten nanoseconds, while the valley depolarization time can exceed one nanosecond. At present, however, a consensus on the microscopic mechanisms governing exciton radiative and non-radiative recombination is lacking. The strong exciton oscillator strength resulting in up to ∼20% absorption for a single monolayer points to ultrafast radiative recombination. However, the low quantum yield and large variance in the reported lifetimes suggest that non-radiative Auger-type processes obscure the intrinsic exciton radiative lifetime. In either case, the electron–hole exchange interaction plays an important role in the exciton spin and valley dynamics. In this paper, we review the experiments and theory that have led to these conclusions and comment on future experiments that could complement our current understanding.

In crystals, energy band extrema in momentum space can be identified by a valley index. The internal quantum degree of freedom associated with valley pseudospin indices can act as a useful information carrier, analogous to electronic charge or spin. Interest in valleytronics has been revived in recent years following the discovery of atomically thin materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides. However, the valley coherence time—a crucial quantity for valley pseudospin manipulation—is difficult to directly probe. In this work, we use two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy to resonantly generate and detect valley coherence of excitons (Coulomb-bound electron–hole pairs) in monolayer WSe2(refs ,). The imposed valley coherence persists for approximately one hundred femtoseconds. We propose that the electron–hole exchange interaction provides an important decoherence mechanism in addition to exciton population recombination. This work provides critical insight into the requirements and strategies for optical manipulation of the valley pseudospin for future valleytronics applications.

Exciton dephasing and relaxation dynamics are studied in a GaAs quantum dot ensemble using optical twodimensional Fourier transform spectroscopy. We measure the temperature and excitation-density dependence of the exciton ground-state homogeneous lineshape of quantum dots within the ensemble and show that acoustic phonon sidebands are absent. The linewidth increases nonlinearly with temperature from 6 to 50 K and the behavior is well-described by an Arrhenius equation with an offset. The absence of a phonon-activation peak in the spectra reveals that elastic exciton-phonon scattering is the primary dephasing mechanism and the results can be explained qualitatively using an extension of the independent Boson model that includes quadratic coupling in the phonon displacement coordinates. At temperatures ≥ 35 K, spectral features associated with phonon-assisted population transfer of excitons out of the quantum dots and into quantum wells states begin to appear.
