The opioid epidemic represents a national crisis. Oxycodone is one of the most prescribed opioid medications in the United States, whereas buprenorphine is currently the most prescribed medication for opioid use disorder (OUD) pharmacotherapy. Given the extensive use of prescription opioids and the global opioid epidemic, it is essential to understand how opioids modulate brain cell type function at the single-cell level. We performed single nucleus RNA-seq (snRNA-seq) using iPSC-derived forebrain organoids from three male OUD subjects in response to oxycodone, buprenorphine, or vehicle for seven days. We utilized the snRNA-seq data to identify differentially expressed genes following drug treatment using the Seurat integrative analysis pipeline. We utilized iPSC-derived forebrain organoids and single-cell sequencing technology as an unbiased tool to study cell-type-specific and drug-specific transcriptional responses. After quality control filtering, we analyzed 25787 cells and identified sixteen clusters using unsupervised clustering analysis. Our results reveal distinct transcriptional responses to oxycodone and buprenorphine by iPSC-derived brain organoids from patients with OUD. Specifically, buprenorphine displayed a significant influence on transcription regulation in glial cells. However, oxycodone induced type I interferon signaling in many cell types, including neural cells in brain organoids. Finally, we demonstrate that oxycodone, but not buprenorphine activated STAT1 and induced the type I interferon signaling in patients with OUD. These data suggest that elevation of STAT1 expression associated with OUD might play a role in transcriptional regulation in response to oxycodone. In summary, our results provide novel mechanistic insight into drug action at single-cell resolution.

Objectives: Communities of color might disproportionately experience long-term consequences of COVID-19, known as Long COVID. We sought to understand the awareness of and experiences with Long COVID among African American/Black (AA/B), Hispanic/Latino (H/L), and Indigenous (Native) adults (18 + years of age) in Arizona who previously tested positive for COVID-19. Methods: Between December 2022 and April 2023, the Arizona Community Engagement Alliance (AZCEAL) conducted 12 focus groups and surveys with 65 AA/B, H/L and Native community members. Data from focus groups were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify emerging issues. Survey data provided demographic information about participants and quantitative assessments of Long COVID experiences were used to augment focus group data. Results: Study participants across all three racial/ethnic groups had limited to no awareness of the term Long COVID, yet many described experiencing or witnessing friends and family endure physical symptoms consistent with Long COVID (e.g., brain fog, loss of memory, fatigue) as well as associated mental health issues (e.g., anxiety, worry, post-traumatic stress disorder). Participants identified a need for Long COVID mental health and other health resources, as well as increased access to Long COVID information. Conclusion: To prevent Long COVID health inequities among AA/B, H/L, and Native adults living in AZ, health-related organizations and providers should increase access to culturally relevant, community-based Long COVID–specific information, mental health services, and other health resources aimed at serving these populations.

The use of smart wearables, especially smart watches, has increased significantly in recent years. Driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, personal self-tracking has never been more relevant. However, it is not yet clear which factors, functional or non-functional, influence the pre-adoption of smart watches and to what extent the COVID-19 pandemic has changed their weighting. To address this research gap, we reviewed the relevant literature and subsequently developed a conceptual model based on existing acceptance models and analysed our online empirical data using structural equation modelling. Our findings reveal significant differences over time, mainly driven by non-functional characteristics (i.e., perceived aesthetics, perceived price, perceived enjoyment). In addition, fashion consciousness seems to influence the relationship between perceived haptics and intention to use during pandemic times. Our findings shed light on the importance of contextual behavioural changes on technology use and provide practical and theoretical implications for manufacturers, users, and society.

IMPORTANCE: Early detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) may help prevent adverse cardiovascular events such as stroke. Deep learning applied to electrocardiograms (ECGs) has been successfully used for early identification of several cardiovascular diseases. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether deep learning models applied to outpatient ECGs in sinus rhythm can predict AF in a large and diverse patient population. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prognostic study was performed on ECGs acquired from January 1, 1987, to December 31, 2022, at 6 US Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital networks and 1 large non-VA academic medical center. Participants included all outpatients with 12-lead ECGs in sinus rhythm. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: A convolutional neural network using 12-lead ECGs from 2 US VA hospital networks was trained to predict the presence of AF within 31 days of sinus rhythm ECGs. The model was tested on ECGs held out from training at the 2 VA networks as well as 4 additional VA networks and 1 large non-VA academic medical center. RESULTS: A total of 907 858 ECGs from patients across 6 VA sites were included in the analysis. These patients had a mean (SD) age of 62.4 (13.5) years, 6.4% were female, and 93.6% were male, with a mean (SD) CHA2DS2-VASc (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age, diabetes mellitus, prior stroke or transient ischemic attack or thromboembolism, vascular disease, age, sex category) score of 1.9 (1.6). A total of 0.2% were American Indian or Alaska Native, 2.7% were Asian, 10.7% were Black, 4.6% were Latinx, 0.7% were Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, 62.4% were White, 0.4% were of other race or ethnicity (which is not broken down into subcategories in the VA data set), and 18.4% were of unknown race or ethnicity. At the non-VA academic medical center (72 483 ECGs), the mean (SD) age was 59.5 (15.4) years and 52.5% were female, with a mean (SD) CHA2DS2-VASc score of 1.6 (1.4). A total of 0.1% were American Indian or Alaska Native, 7.9% were Asian, 9.4% were Black, 2.9% were Latinx, 0.03% were Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, 74.8% were White, 0.1% were of other race or ethnicity, and 4.7% were of unknown race or ethnicity. A deep learning model predicted the presence of AF within 31 days of a sinus rhythm ECG on held-out test ECGs at VA sites with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.86 (95% CI, 0.85-0.86), accuracy of 0.78 (95% CI, 0.77-0.78), and F1 score of 0.30 (95% CI, 0.30-0.31). At the non-VA site, AUROC was 0.93 (95% CI, 0.93-0.94); accuracy, 0.87 (95% CI, 0.86-0.88); and F1 score, 0.46 (95% CI, 0.44-0.48). The model was well calibrated, with a Brier score of 0.02 across all sites. Among individuals deemed high risk by deep learning, the number needed to screen to detect a positive case of AF was 2.47 individuals for a testing sensitivity of 25% and 11.48 for 75%. Model performance was similar in patients who were Black, female, or younger than 65 years or who had CHA2DS2-VASc scores of 2 or greater. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Deep learning of outpatient sinus rhythm ECGs predicted AF within 31 days in populations with diverse demographics and comorbidities. Similar models could be used in future AF screening efforts to reduce adverse complications associated with this disease.

ObjectiveObesity and dysmetabolism are major risk factors for atrial fibrillation (AF). Fasting and postload levels of glucose and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) reflect different facets of metabolic regulation. We sought to study their respective contributions to AF risk concurrently.MethodsWe assessed levels of fasting and postload glucose and NEFA in the Cardiovascular Health Study to identify associations with AF incidence and, secondarily, with ECG parameters of AF risk available at baseline. Linear and Cox regressions were performed.ResultsThe study included 1876 participants (age 77.7±4.4). During the median follow-up of 11.4 years, 717 cases of incident AF occurred. After adjustment for potential confounders, postload glucose showed an association with incident AF (HR per SD increment of postload glucose=1.11, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.21, p=0.017). Both glucose measures, but not NEFA, were positively associated with higher P wave terminal force in V1 (PTFV1); the association remained significant only for postload glucose when the two measures were entered together (β per SD increment=138 μV·ms, 95% CI 15 to 260, p=0.028). Exploratory analyses showed significant interaction by sex for fasting NEFA (pinteraction=0.044) and postload glucose (pinteraction=0.015) relative to AF, with relationships stronger in women. For postload glucose, the association with incident AF was observed among women but not among men.ConclusionsAmong older adults, postload glucose was positively associated with incident AF, with consistent findings for PTFV1. In exploratory analyses, the relationship with AF appeared specific to women. These findings require further study but suggest that interventions to address postprandial dysglycaemia late in life might reduce AF.

Objective: Fatal overdoses are the third leading cause of death in the pediatric population. Substance use disorders (SUD) screening is not routinely done in primary care practices. Early screening and intervention for adolescent SUD could mitigate future harm.Methods: We conducted a 3-month pilot adapting universal screening using the CRAFFT tool in patients aged 12 to 17 presenting to an urban and a rural primary care practice during well-child and acute/sick-child visits. We collaborated with our pediatric addiction service to ensure access availability for further assessment and treatment for all positively screened patients; this was broadly communicated to primary care providers.Results: There was a higher CRAFFT completion rate in the urban site (90%, vs 52.6% in our rural site). The majority of CRAFFT questionnaires were completed during acute/sick-child visits in both study sites. Moreover, we found a higher positive screen rate in our rural practice (14.6%, vs 2.4% in our urban practice). Only 27% of positively screened patients had substance use addressed by their providers. No pediatric addiction referrals were made.Conclusions: Findings suggest provider-level barriers exist despite having adequate specialty referral sources and institutional encouragement. Future work is needed to explore these barriers.

The role of exercise for treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) is unknown. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials examining exercise training in participants with AF was performed. Exercise training reduced AF recurrence, improved quality of life, and improved cardiorespiratory fitness. AF burden was reduced in studies that included continuous monitoring.

Digitalization is increasingly and broadly impacting on companies throughout all industries. To cope with digital transformation, organizations need specific IT skills and often face a bottleneck between required and existing capabilities. Thus, organizations revert to support from IT consultants. However, such collaborations need to create value so as to make client organizations future-proof in the long term. We therefore need a better understanding of how value is created in IT consulting projects. We build on service-dominant (S-D) logic as the theory base and evaluate our structural model, which explains IT consulting service value based on 77 matched pairs of IT consulting projects using structural equation modeling. We provide empirical support for the assumptions of S-D logic in the IT consulting industry and reveal determinants that significantly contribute to the overall IT consulting service value. Our results contribute to the ongoing discourse in the S-D logic literature and provide meaningful insights for practice.

Shrinking product life cycles and increasing R&D costs force companies to launch new products to markets in ever shorter periods of time. Yet, this critically depends on a fast production ramp-up of the new products, which requires interdepartmental coordination of the R&D and manufacturing interface. Here, international manufacturing networks (IMN) cause new coordination challenges in global ramp-up management as it is also necessary to coordinate ramp-up time, costs, product quality, and quantity between the internationally dispersed and interdependent plants. This managerial problem is, however, mostly ignored by scientific literature. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore network-specific coordination challenges in global ramp-ups. Drawing on a multiple case study design, we use expert interviews and online-questionnaires to explore the importance of 16 challenges in regard to ramp-up success. Based on the in-depth analysis of three companies, we also show that the importance of these challenges can vary depending on the network configuration. Thereby, this study can help practitioners to develop a better understanding of their global ramp-up processes and improve future coordination activities.

In long-term planning, scenario planning is often used to cope with uncertainty. Yet, theory and practice lack clear guidance leading to a diverse set of methodologies for scenario planning. Despite this shortcoming, scenario planning methodologies are frequently applied globally in a standardised manner without considering contextual differences. In particular, it is actors of multinational corporations who have to deal with contextual differences of various dimensions. By using the upper echelons theory, the underlying research shows from a theoretical standpoint how contextual differences influence the scenario planning processes. This research presents a scenario planning process with five process phases. By introducing a measurement scale for individual preferences in the process, adjustments can be made according to participants' preferences. The scale was validated with a large, global set of management consultants. Beyond practical value, the scale development helps to strengthen the position of scenario planning in the strategic management domain.

Incumbent companies are launching digital transformation initiatives (DTIs) to cope with technological changes, challenging competitive environments, increasing customer demands, and other digitalization challenges. The DTI spectrum is broad and covers structural and contextual changes. Companies often launch multiple. concurrent DTIs, resulting in considerable organizational complexity. However, there has been very little research into the successful management of the interplay between DTIs. Drawing on five management aspects (strategic alignment, governance, methods/IT, people, and culture) and insights from three case companies, we elucidate DTIs’ interplay, illustrating that beneficial DTI interplay management leads to a complementary dualityinstead of a competing dualismin organizational ambidexterity. We explicate that multiple concurrent DTIs can foster structural and contextual ambidexterity, which leads to hybrid ambidexterity, concluding that contextual ambidexterity coheres and balances exploration and exploitation efforts. Thereby, we contribute to a better understanding of DTIs, their interplay management, and their roles to foster hybrid ambidexterity.

Zusätzlich zum Klassiker der alternativen Reiseformen, dem Backpacking, hat sich im Bereich des Individualtourismus im letzten Jahrzehnt ein neuer Reisetrend, der sogenannte Vantourismus entwickelt. Immer mehr Menschen entscheiden sich dazu, im „Zuhause auf vier Rädern“ für begrenzte Zeit zu verreisen und dabei, anders als klassische Campingtouristen, weitgehend auf klassische Campingplätze und vorbestimmte Reiserouten zu verzichten. Aufgrund des Mangels an empirischer Forschung zu diesem Thema untersucht dieser Beitrag in einer Online-Studie, inwieweit sich VantouristInnen von klassischen CampingtouristInnen unterscheiden. Die Analyse zeigt, dass zahlreiche Diskrepanzen in Hinblick auf Reisemerkmale, Reisemotivationen, Urlaubsbedürfnisse und Lebensstilmerkmale einen eigenständigen Typus des Alternativtourismus nahelegen. Außerdem zeigt die empirische Prüfung eines ganzheitlichen Erklärungsansatzes, dass neben dem Alter, dem Familienstand und der Komfortorientierung vor allem Bedürfnisse der Selbstaktualisierung, Authentizität und Naturverbundenheit ausschlaggebend sind, sich für Vantourismus zu entscheiden.

During the current coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic, many outpatient chemical dependency treatment programs and clinics are decreasing their number of in-person patient contacts. This has widened an already large gap between patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) who need treatment and those who have actually received treatment. For a disorder where group therapy has been the mainstay treatment option for decades, social distancing, shelter in place, and treatment discontinuation have created an urgent need for alternative approaches to addiction treatment. In an attempt to continue some care for patients in need, many medical institutions have transitioned to a virtual environment to promote safe social distancing. Although there is ample evidence to support telemedical interventions, these can be difficult to implement, especially in the SUD population. This article reviews current literature for the use of telehealth interventions in the treatment of SUDs and offers recommendations on safe and effective implementation strategies based on the current literature.

Traditional ways of managing information technology (IT) service providers are no longer applicable as companies use more and more services provisioned in the cloud. Therefore, organizations are looking for new ways to manage their relationship with cloud providers. The shift from IT-as-a-product to IT-as-a-service puts clients in a continued dependency on cloud service providers (CSPs), making provider management a critical factor for companies’ success. In this paper, we (1) identify cloud-specific challenges in managing CSPs, (2) develop a corresponding process framework for CSP management, and (3) discuss and extend this framework. Our final cloud management framework comprises ten processes for effective CSP management based on a literature study and twelve expert interviews. Furthermore, we unpack three major contingency factors, i.e., client–provider ratio, specificity, and service delivery model, which influence the reasonability and configuration of the cloud management processes. Drawing on two specific cases from our interview study, we explicate the contingency factors’ influence. Thus, our paper contributes to cloud sourcing research by deepening the understanding of client–provider relationships and by introducing a viable CSP management instrument contingent on three salient factors of cloud service provisioning.

Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text.Ventricular arrhythmias are common following left ventricular assist device implantation (LVAD), and the effects of ventricular tachycardia (VT) ablation on thrombosis and embolic events are unknown. We aimed to assess LVAD thrombosis, stroke, and embolic event rates after VT ablation. Left ventricular assist device implantation patients from two academic centers who underwent endocardial VT ablation between 2009 and 2016 were compared to a control group with VT who were not ablated and followed for one year. The primary composite outcome was confirmed or suspected LVAD thrombosis, stroke, or other embolic event. Survival analysis was conducted with Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank tests, and Cox regression. Forty-three LVAD patients underwent VT ablation, and 73 LVAD patients had VT but were not ablated. Patients who were ablated were more likely have VT prior to LVAD (p= 0.04), monomorphic VT (p< 0.01), and to be on antiarrhythmics (p< 0.01). Fifty-eight percent of the patients in the ablation group experienced the primary composite outcome (11% had confirmed device thrombosis [DT], 41% suspected DT, 39% had a stroke or embolic event) compared to 30% in the control group (12% with confirmed DT, 11% with suspected DT, 14% with stroke or embolic event) (p= 0.002). In multivariable regression, ablation was an independent predictor of the primary composite outcome (hazard ratios, 2.24; 95% confidence interval, 1.09–4.61; p= 0.03). Patients with LVADs referred for endocardial VT ablation had elevated rates of DT and embolic events.

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) are used in the management of sudden cardiac arrest. Compared with clinic visits, remote interrogation of these devices has shown clinical benefit and lower cost. We hypothesize that demographic and socioeconomic factors influence patient satisfaction with remote monitoring and therefore the choice of a pathway for follow-up. Questionnaires were mailed to 85 patients (mean age 63 ± 13.5 years, 73% male), with ICDs implanted for primary prevention of sudden cardiac arrest. Information regarding education, social support, employment, and income was collected. To compare clinic and remote monitoring, patients were given questionnaires to assess which parameters they consider important: convenience, accuracy, human contact, scheduling, and cost. Of the 34 responders, patients rated clinic visit to be as accurate with better opportunity to ask questions and better human contact, but there was no difference in perception of convenience, scheduling, or cost between the 2 groups. Significant number of patients dropped from the labor market after ICD implantation; however labor status, education, or income did not influence the preference of clinic appointment. Survey respondents preferred clinic to remote interrogation because they believe clinic appointments allow better interaction. Educating patients about the benefits of remote interrogation and improved communication will enhance utilization of this sophisticated technology for superior patient care.

This work highlights the rediscovery of the technique of reverse glass painting by the artists of the “Blaue Reiter” collective in the early 20th-century and focusses particularly on the role of Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944). Kandinsky created more than 70 reverse paintings on glass and showed several of them in exhibitions together with paintings on canvas and cardboard, implying a coequal importance of these techniques. Four of his early (1911–1914) reverse glass paintings (Auferstehung, Allerheiligen II, Rudern, Apokalyptischer Reiter II) were selected for investigation and their iconography, painting techniques and painting materials were examined. Two paintings were executed on so-called cathedral glass, revealing a “hammered surface”, whereas Kandinsky used a corrugated glass panel for Rudern. A multi-analytical, non-invasive approach [X-ray fluorescence (XRF), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), VIS spectroscopy (VIS), Raman spectroscopy] was taken to identify the pigments and classify the binding media. The results reveal a broad palette of materials. Several pigments like lead white, zinc white, strontium yellow, Prussian blue, viridian, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, cinnabar and carbon black were found in most of the four paintings. The use of the rare synthetic organic pigments PR60 and PB52 is discussed. In two works of art, cadmium carbonate is associated with cadmium yellow. The identification of aluminium foil along with tin foils in Rudernindicates an early use of this material for reverse glass paintings.

Untargeted metabolomics promises comprehensive characterization of small molecules in biological samples. However, the field is hampered by low annotation rates and abstract spectral data. Despite recent advances in computational metabolomics, manual annotations and manual confirmation of in-silico annotations remain important in the field. Here, exploratory data analysis methods for mass spectral data provide overviews, prioritization, and structural hypothesis starting points to researchers facing large quantities of spectral data. In this research, we propose a fluid means of dealing with mass spectral data using specXplore, an interactive Python dashboard providing interactive and complementary visualizations facilitating mass spectral similarity matrix exploration. Specifically, specXplore provides a two-dimensional t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding embedding as a jumping board for local connectivity exploration using complementary interactive visualizations in the form of partial network drawings, similarity heatmaps, and fragmentation overview maps. SpecXplore makes use of state-of-the-art ms2deepscore pairwise spectral similarities as a quantitative backbone while allowing fast changes of threshold and connectivity limitation settings, providing flexibility in adjusting settings to suit the localized node environment being explored. We believe that specXplore can become an integral part of mass spectral data exploration efforts and assist users in the generation of structural hypotheses for compounds of interest.

ABSTRACTObjective:Adolescents are at risk for substance use, sexual assault, and sexual risk behaviours; however, to date no integrated prevention programmes address all three risk behaviours. The goal of this study was to evaluate the usability and acceptability of Teen Well Check, an e-health prevention programme targeting substance use, sexual assault, and sexual risk among adolescents in primary care settings.Methods:The current study included content analysis of interviews with adolescents in primary care (aged 14–18; n = 25) in the intervention development process, followed by usability and acceptability testing with qualitative interviews among adolescents in primary care (aged 14–18; n = 10) and pediatric primary care providers (n = 11) in the intervention refinement process. All data were collected in the Southeastern U.S.Results:Feedback on Teen Well Checkaddressed content, engagement and interaction, language and tone, aesthetics, logistics, inclusivity, parent/guardian-related topics, and the application of personal stories. Overall, providers reported they would be likely to use this intervention (5.1 out of 7.0) and recommend it to adolescents (5.4 out of 7.0).Conclusions:These findings suggest preliminary usability and acceptability of Teen Well Check. A randomized clinical trial is needed to assess efficacy.

The United States is in the midst of a national opioid epidemic. Physicians are encouraged both to prevent and treat opioid-use disorders (OUDs). Although there are 3 Food and Drug Administration-approved medications to treat OUD (methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone) and there is ample evidence of their efficacy, they are not used as often as they should. We provide a brief review of the 3 primary medications used in the treatment of OUD. Using data from available medical literature, we synthesize existing knowledge and provide a framework for how to determine the optimal approach for outpatient management of OUD with medication-assisted treatments.

Statins, 3-hydroxy-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors, have been used for decades for the prevention of coronary artery disease and stroke. They act primarily by lowering serum cholesterol through the inhibition of cholesterol synthesis in the liver, which results in the upregulation of low-density lipoprotein receptors in the liver. This results in the removal of low-density lipoproteincholesterol. Studies have suggested that statins may demonstrate additional effects that are independent of their effects on low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. These have been termed “pleiotropic” effects. Pleiotropic effects may be due to the inhibition of isoprenoid intermediates by statins. Isoprenoid inhibition has effects on the small guanosine triphosphate binding proteins Rac and Rho which in turn effects nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidases. Therefore, there are changes in endothelial nitric oxide synthase expression, atherosclerotic plaque stability, pro-inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species production, platelet reactivity, and cardiac fibrosis and hypetrophy development. Recently, statins have been compared to the ezetimibe and the recently published outcomes data on the proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 inhibitors has allowed for a reexamination of statin pleiotropy. As a result of these diverse effects, it has been suggested that statins also have anti-arrhythmic effects. This review focuses on the mechanisms of statin pleiotropy and discusses evidence from the statin clinical trials as well as examining the possible anti-arrhythmic effects atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachyarrhythmias.

The growing risk of transmission of tick-borne zoonotic pathogens to humans in Ontario, Canada, warrants investigations into regional tick distribution, tick burdens of local peridomestic animals, and prevalence of tick-borne pathogens. The objectives of this study were to investigate the geographic distribution and magnitude of tick infestations in opportunistically sampled mammalian wildlife and companion animals (i.e., dogs) in southern Ontario and to test these ticks for evidence of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens. Ticks collected from wildlife carcasses, live-trapped wildlife and companion animals (2015–2016), as well as wildlife diagnostic cases (2011–2013), were identified to species and life stage. Ixodes scapularisticks were tested by real-time PCR for Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia microti, Borrelia miyamotoiand Borrelia burgdorferisensu stricto (s.s.). Amblyomma americanumticks were tested for Ehrlichia chaffeensis. A total of 1687 ticks of six species were collected from 334 animals, including 224 raccoons (n = 1381 ticks) and 50 dogs (n = 67 ticks). The most common tick species collected from parasitized raccoons were Ixodes texanus(n =666 ticks) and Dermacentor variabilis(n = 600 ticks), which were removed from 58.5% (median: 2 ticks; range: 1–36) and 49.1% (median: 2 ticks; range: 1–64) of raccoons, respectively. Of I. scapularistested, 9.3% (4/43) were positive for Bo. burgdorferis.s. and 2.3% (1/43) for A. phagocytophilum. These results reveal that numerous tick species parasitize common, peridomestic wildlife and that at least two zoonotic, tick-borne pathogens circulate in southern Ontario. Host-tick vector-pathogen dynamics should continue to be monitored in the face of global climate change, landscape alterations and expanding human populations.
