Chemists have long pursued harnessing light energy and photoexcitation processes for synthetic transformations. Ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) in high-valent metal complexes often triggers bond homolysis, generating oxidized ligand-centered radicals and reduced metal centers. While photoinduced oxidative activations can be enabled, this process, typically seen as photochemical decomposition, remains underexplored in catalytic applications. To mitigate decomposition during LMCT excitation, we developed a catalytic cycle integrating in situ coordination, LMCT, and ligand homolysis to activate ligated alcohols transiently into alkoxy radicals. This catalytic approach leverages Ce(IV) LMCT excitation and highly reactive alkoxy radical intermediates for selective functionalizations of C(sp3)–H and C(sp3)–C(sp3) bonds under mild conditions. In this Account, we discuss these advancements, highlighting the practical utility of cost-effective cerium salts as catalysts and their potential to develop innovative transformations, addressing long-standing synthetic challenges.

Caloric restriction and intermittent fasting prolong the lifespan and healthspan of model organisms and improve human health. The natural polyamine spermidine has been similarly linked to autophagy enhancement, geroprotection and reduced incidence of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases across species borders. Here, we asked whether the cellular and physiological consequences of caloric restriction and fasting depend on polyamine metabolism. We report that spermidine levels increased upon distinct regimens of fasting or caloric restriction in yeast, flies, mice and human volunteers. Genetic or pharmacological blockade of endogenous spermidine synthesis reduced fasting-induced autophagy in yeast, nematodes and human cells. Furthermore, perturbing the polyamine pathway in vivo abrogated the lifespan- and healthspan-extending effects, as well as the cardioprotective and anti-arthritic consequences of fasting. Mechanistically, spermidine mediated these effects via autophagy induction and hypusination of the translation regulator eIF5A. In summary, the polyamine–hypusination axis emerges as a phylogenetically conserved metabolic control hub for fasting-mediated autophagy enhancement and longevity.

A biocompatible metal–organic framework (MOF), named HSTC-4, constructed using the flexible 4,4′-oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBA), was developed to enable efficient loading and controlled release of vitamin C (VC) through a combination of strategies involving ligand length, structure design, and metal selection. The kinetic product HSTC-4 demonstrates a propensity for transforming into the thermodynamically stable HSTC-5 under external stimuli, such as photoillumination and vacuum heating, as witnessed by single-crystal to single-crystal transformation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the VC guest molecules exhibit stronger binding affinity with HSTC-5 due to its narrower pores compared to HSTC-4, resulting in a slower release of VC from VC@HSTC-5. Furthermore, precise control over VC release can be achieved by introducing surface modifications involving SiO2onto the structure of VC@HSCT-5, while simultaneously adjusting environmental factors such as pH and temperature conditions. Preliminary cell culture experiments and cytotoxicity assays highlight the biocompatibility of HSTC-5, suggesting that it is a promising platform for sustained drug delivery and diverse biomedical applications.

The interaxle torque distribution of off-road vehicle is interfered with temperature field variation of limited slip clutch during long-time sliding, which is controlled by actual heat flux input. The equivalent heat dissipation model is created based on the suggested calculation method of convective heat transfer equivalent coefficient in various lubrication phases. Further, thermal equilibrium equations of friction pair nodes are solved to produce the temperature field calculation model of dynamic heat flux partition. A clutch sliding bench is set up to verify and analyze the effect of heat flux partition on temperature field by organizing different operating conditions. The results demonstrate that the temperature difference of contact surface calculated by the constant heat flux partition model increases significantly along with sliding time and heat flux. In addition, the deviations of temperature rising rate at stage A and average temperature at stage B of separator plate higher than the experimental result also increases. On the contrary, the decrease value of actual input heat flux of separator plate from initial to steady state gradually increases with the increase of relative speed difference in dynamic heat flux partition model. The calculation deviations of temperature rising rate and average temperature are less than 0.1°C/s and 3°C, respectively. This model offers a novel approach for calculating clutch temperature field.

G-triplexes are G-rich oligonucleotides composed of three G-tracts and have absorbed much attention due to their potential biological functions and attractive performance in biosensing. Through the optimization of loop compositions, DNA lengths, and 5′-flanking bases of G-rich sequences, a new stable G-triplex sequence with 14 bases (G3-F15) was discovered to dramatically activate the fluorescence of Thioflavin T (ThT), a water-soluble fluorogenic dye. The fluorescence enhancement of ThT after binding with G3-F15 reached 3200 times, which was the strongest one by far among all of the G-rich sequences. The conformations of G3-F15 and G3-F15/ThT were studied by circular dichroism. The thermal stability measurements indicated that G3-F15 was a highly stable G-triplex structure. The conformations of G3-F15 and G3-F15/ThT in the presence of different metal cations were studied thoroughly by fluorescent spectroscopy, circular dichroism, and nuclear magnetic resonance. Furthermore, using the G3-F15/ThT complex as a fluorescent probe, a robust and simple turn-on fluorescent sensor for uracil-DNA glycosylase activity was developed. This study proposes a new systematic strategy to explore new functional G-rich sequences and their ligands, which will promote their applications in diagnosis, therapy, and biosensing.

Simultaneous sensitive and precise determination of multibiomarkers is of great significance for improving detection efficiency, reducing diagnosis and treatment expenses, and elevating survival rates. However, the development of simple and portable biosensors for simultaneous determination of multiplexed targets in biological fluids still faces challenges. Herein, a unique and versatile immobilization-free dual-target electrochemical biosensing platform, which combines distinguishable magnetic signal reporters with buoyancy-magnetism separation, was designed and constructed for simultaneous detection of carcinoembryonic (CEA) and α-fetoprotein (AFP) in intricate biological fluids. To construct such distinguishable magnetic signal reporters with signal transduction, amplification, and output, secondary antibodies of CEA and AFP were respectively functionalized on methylene blue (MB) and 6-(ferrocenyl)hexanethiol (FeC) modified Fe3O4@Au magnetic nanocomposites. Meanwhile, a multifunctional flotation probe with dual target recognition, capture, and isolation capability was prepared by conjugating primary antibodies (Ab1-CEA, Ab1-AFP) to hollow buoyant microspheres. The target antigens of CEA and AFP can trigger a flotation-mediated sandwich-type immunoreaction and capture a certain amount of the distinguishable magnetic signal reporter, which enables the conversion of the target CEA and AFP quantities to the signal of the potential-resolved MB and FeC. Thus, the MB and FeC currents of magnetically adsorbed distinguishable magnetic reporters can be used to determine the CEA and AFP targets simultaneously and precisely. Accordingly, the proposed strategy exhibited a delightful linear response for CEA and AFP in the range of 100 fg·mL–1–100 ng·mL–1with detection limits of 33.34 and 17.02 fg·mL–1(S/N= 3), respectively. Meanwhile, no significant nonspecific adsorption and cross-talk were observed. The biosensing platform has shown satisfactory performance in the determination of real clinical samples. More importantly, the proposed approach can be conveniently extended to universal detection just by simply substituting biorecognition events. Thus, this work opens up a new promising perspective for dual and even multiple targets and offers promising potential applications in clinical diagnosis.

The trend toward further miniaturization of micronano antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronic devices has led to a strong demand for low-dimensional materials. The assembly of AFM clusters to produce such materials is a potential pathway that promotes studies on such clusters. In this work, we report on the discovery of the AFM Cr2Snx(x= 3–20) clusters with a stepwise growth at the density functional theory (DFT) level. In comparison, the two Cr atoms tend to stay together and be buried by Sn atoms, forming endohedral structures with one Cr atom encapsulated at size 9 and finally forming a full-encapsulated structure at size 17. Each successive cluster size is composed of its predecessor with an extra Sn atom adsorbed onto the face, giving evidence of stepwise growth. All these Cr2Snx(x= 3–20) clusters are antiferromagnets, except for the triplet-state ferrimagnetic Cr2Sn11, and all their singly negatively and positively charged ions are ferromagnets. The found stable Cr2Sn17cluster can dimerize, yielding dimers and trimers without noticeably distorting the geometrical structure and magnetic properties of each of its constituent cluster monomers, making it possible as a building block for AFM materials.

Biological age (BA) closely depicts age-related changes at a cellular level. Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2D) accelerates BA when calculated using clinical biomarkers, but there is a large spread in the magnitude of individuals’ age acceleration in T2D suggesting additional factors contributing to BA. Additionally, it is unknown whether BA can be changed with treatment. We hypothesized that potential determinants of the heterogeneous BA distribution in T2D could be due to differential tissue aging as reflected at the DNA methylation (DNAm) level, or biological variables and their respective therapeutic treatments. Publicly available DNAm samples were obtained to calculate BA using the DNAm phenotypic age (DNAmPhenoAge) algorithm. DNAmPhenoAge showed age acceleration in T2D samples of whole blood, pancreatic islets, and liver, but not in adipose tissue or skeletal muscle. Analysis of genes associated with differentially methylated CpG sites found a significant correlation between eight individual CpG methylation sites and gene expression. Clinical biomarkers from participants in the NHANES 2017–2018 and ACCORD cohorts were used to calculate BA using the Klemera and Doubal (KDM) method. Cardiovascular and glycemic biomarkers associated with increased BA while intensive blood pressure and glycemic management reduced BA to CA levels, demonstrating that accelerated BA can be restored in the setting of T2D.

Purpose: This study aimed to detect white matter changes and different effects of thyroid hormone on the white matter integrity in young adult male patients with childhood-onset growth hormone deficiency (CO-GHD), compared with healthy people. Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging (structural imaging and diffusion tensor imaging) was performed in 17 young adult male patients with CO-GHD and 17 healthy male controls. The white matter volume, mean diffusivity (MD) values and fractional anisotropy (FA) values were quantified and compared between two groups (CO-GHD group vs. control group). We assessed the interaction effects between thyroid hormone and groups (CO-GHD group vs. control group) on white matter integrity. Results: Patients with CO-GHD exhibited similar white matter volumes compared with controls. However, compared with the controls, patients with CO-GHD showed a significant reduction in FA values in six clusters and a substantial increase in MD values in four clusters, mainly involving the corticospinal tracts, corpus callosum and so on. Moreover, after correcting for insulin-like growth factor-1 levels, the significant interaction effects between groups (CO-GHD group vs. control group) and serum free thyroxine levels on MD values were noted in three clusters, mainly involving in superior longitudinal fasciculus and sagittal stratum. Conclusion: In conclusion, young males with CO-GHD showed white matter changes in multiple brain regions and different effects of thyroid hormone on the white matter integrity.

Background: Patients with early gastric cancer (EGC) are at high risk of developing synchronous multiple gastric neoplasms (SMGNs) after undergoing endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). However, most previous studies have had small sample sizes, and few have focused on association studies. Aims: This study aimed to analyze the associations between SMGN lesion data from patients with EGC treated with ESD and their correlation coefficients. Methods: The clinical ESD data from two hospitals from January 2008 to January 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The main lesions were defined as those with a significant depth of infiltration. The larger tumor diameter was considered the main lesion if the lesions had the same infiltration depth. Results: Of the 1013 post-ESD cases examined, 95 cases (223 lesions) had SMGN, and 25 patients had more than three lesions. For the correlation analysis, 190 lesions were included. The study revealed a similarity in pathological type between main and minor lesions (rs= 0.37) and a positive correlation in infiltration depth (rs= 0.58). The mean diameter sizes of the main and minor lesions were 20.7 ± 8.3 mm and 13.1 ± 6.4 mm, respectively, with statistically significant differences (P< 0.001). A linear correlation was observed between the diameter size and a linear regression model was constructed, producing r= 0.38 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.19–0.54], b= 0.29 (95% CI 0.14–0.44), t= 3.94, P< 0.001]. A correlation was identified between the vertical distribution of the main and minor lesions, the horizontal distribution, and the gross endoscopic morphology (ϕc= 0.25, P= 0.02; ϕc= 0.32, P< 0.001; ϕc= 0.60,P< 0.001). Conclusions: The correlation coefficients for microscopic characteristics were higher than those for gastroscopy. There is a significant positive correlation between the main and minor lesions regarding pathological stage and depth of infiltration, respectively. School practitioners’ receptivity to reform influences the success of policy implementation. In Taiwan, the Ministry of Education launched a curriculum reform in 2019. To determine how to enhance school agency for the policy, we explored the individual and contextual factors affecting receptivity to the new curriculum. With a survey design, this study recruited secondary school teachers and principals throughout Taiwan as samples. Hierarchical regression models were conducted to examine the effects of individual factors (conceptions of distributed leadership and collective learning) and organizational culture (power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and academic emphasis) on practitioners’ receptivity to curriculum reform. Both the main and interactive effects were investigated. The results indicate that respondents who positively conceived distributed leadership and collective learning were more receptive to change. Regarding the three indicators of organizational culture, we found no significant effect of power distance, while the main effect of uncertainty avoidance and the moderation effect of academic emphasis existed. Those who perceived their schools with high uncertainty avoidance levels were more resistant to reform efforts. Besides, a positive linkage between teacher conception of collective learning and affection for change was more evident in schools with less academic emphasis. Our study suggests that school reforms must be understood within the individual and school contexts. The finding about the moderation effect of academic emphasis furthermore signifies the cultural implication in Asian societies.

Precise control of charge carrier type and density of two-dimensional (2D) ambipolar semiconductors is the prerequisite for their applications in next-generation integrated circuits and electronic devices. Here, by fabricating a heterointerface between a 2D ambipolar semiconductor (hydrogenated germanene, GeH) and a ferroelectric substrate (PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3–PbTiO3, PMN–PT), fine-tuning of charge carrier type and density of GeH is achieved. Due to ambipolar properties, proper band gap, and high carrier mobility of GeH, by applying the opposite local bias (±8 V), a lateral polarization in GeH is constructed with a change of work function by 0.6 eV. Besides, the built-in polarization in GeH nanoflake could promote the separation of photoexcited electron–hole pairs, which lead to 4 times enhancement of the photoconductivity after poling by 200 V. In addition, a gradient regulation of the work function of GeH from 4.94 to 5.21 eV by adjusting the local substrate polarization is demonstrated, which could be used for data storage at the micrometer size by forming p–n homojunctions. This work of constructing such heterointerfaces provides a pathway for applying 2D ambipolar semiconductors in nonvolatile memory devices, photoelectronic devices, and next-generation integrated circuit.

Damage of reactive oxygen species to various molecules such as DNA has been related to many chronic and degenerative human diseases, aging, and even cancer. 8-Oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (OG), the most significant oxidation product of guanine (G), has become a biomarker of oxidative stress as well as gene regulation. The positive effect of OG in activating transcription and the negative effect in inducing mutation are a double-edged sword; thus, site-specific quantification is helpful to quickly reveal the functional mechanism of OG at hotspots. Due to the possible biological effects of OG at extremely low abundance in the genome, the monitoring of OG is vulnerable to signal interference from a large amount of G. Herein, based on rolling circle amplification-induced G-triplex formation and Thioflavin T fluorescence enhancement, an ultrasensitive strategy for locus-specific OG quantification was constructed. Owing to the difference in the hydrogen-bonding pattern between OG and G, the nonspecific background signal of G sites was completely suppressed through enzymatic ligation of DNA probes and the triggered specificity of rolling circle amplification. After the signal amplification strategy was optimized, the high detection sensitivity of OG sites with an ultralow detection limit of 0.18 amol was achieved. Under the interference of G sites, as little as 0.05% of OG-containing DNA was first distinguished. This method was further used for qualitative and quantitative monitoring of locus-specific OG in genomic DNA under oxidative stress and identification of key OG sites with biological function.

Apoptosis signal-regulated kinase 1 (ASK1) has recently confirmed as an attractive therapeutic target for drug discovery. The development of small molecule inhibitors of ASK1 has attracted increasing attention. In this work, the rich suite of artificial intelligence methods and descriptor packages available on the OCHEM platform were used to develop regression and classification models for ASK1 inhibitory activity. For regression models, a consensus model was built based on three individual models (LibSVM_Dragon, RFR_QNPR, and LibSVM_RDKIT), which provided the determination coefficient (r2) of 0.69 for the test set. For classification models, the consensus model was developed with ASNN_RDKIT, RFR_Dragon, and RFR_PyDescriptor models and achieved good overall prediction accuracy on test set with 97%. Additionally, we compared the models developed with different algorithms. The results showed that combining various types of descriptors is necessary to improve the predictive ability of the model, and deep learning models provided no advantage over traditional machine learning models in relatively low-data regime. To further explore the relationship between ASK1 inhibitory activity and structural characteristics, several important molecular properties and structural fragments were detected. The results indicated that in silico models could be useful for the virtual screening of ASK1 inhibitors. The important molecular properties and representative structural fragments may be helpful for the discovery of new ASK1 inhibitors.

Purpose: Bone mineral density (BMD) impairment is one of the critical factors for long-term quality of life in adults growth hormone deficiency (AGHD). This study aims to investigate the annual changes in BMD in AGHD patients with different ages of onset and to identify predicting factors that influence BMD. Methods: AGHD patients (n= 160) with available data for 4 years follow-up from a major tertiary medical center in China were retrospectively included (110 [68.8%] childhood-onset, 119 [74.4%] male). BMD of the axial bone (including total hip, neck of femur, and L1–4) derived from dual X-ray absorptiometry and final height were investigated at the first visit, 12 months, 24 months, 36 months, and 48 months thereafter. Low BMD was defined as Z-score ≤ −2. Results: The prevalence of low BMD was 30.0% at baseline and 12.5% at 4 years of follow-up. The CO AGHD group presented a significantly lower BMD than the AO AGHD group at the baseline (P= 0.009). In contrast, the CO AGHD group had significantly greater median annual BMD change than the AO AGHD group (0.044 vs. −0.0003 g/cm2/year in L1–4, P< 0.001), indicating a significant difference in the overall BMD trend between CO and AO groups. Childhood-onset (odds ratio [OR] 0.326, P= 0.012), low serum testosterone (OR 0.847; P= 0.004) and FT4 (OR 0.595; P= 0.039) level were independent risk factors for BMD loss. Conclusion: The annual changes of BMD show a different pattern in AGHD patients with varying ages of onset. Patients with CO AGHD have a lower bone mass, and in general, appropriate replacement therapy is necessary for long-term bone health in AGHD patients.

Purpose: The role of prolactin (PRL) in glucolipid metabolism was inconsistent, and there were few studies on the metabolic role of PRL in obese patients. The study aims to explore association between PRL level and metabolic disorders in male obese patients. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted. Eighty-nine male patients with obesity were included, and their clinical data were recorded. Results: A total of 89 male obese patients were included in this study. Their average age was 24.5 ± 9.0 years and BMI was 42.8 ± 9.1 kg/m2. The average waist circumference and body fat percentage was 129.6 ± 19.6 cm and 42.9 ± 8.0%, respectively. The median prolactin levels were 10.0 ng/ml (range: 3.93–30.1 ng/ml). 79.0% (49/62) of these patients presented with NAFLD and 77.3% (68/88) of them was dyslipidemia. Further, serum prolactin level was positively correlated with BMI (r = 0.225, P= 0.034), body fat percentage (r = 0.326, P= 0.017), ALT (r = 0.273, P= 0.011) and AST (r = 0.245, P= 0.029). Compared with low PRL group (<10 ng/ml), the incidence of morbid obesity and NAFLD was higher in high PRL group (morbid obesity: 71.1% vs 45.5%, P= 0.018 and NAFLD: 91.2% vs 64.3%, P= 0.013). In addition, the risk of NAFLD and morbid obesity in high PRL group (>10 ng/ml) was higher than low PRL group (OR:5.187, 95%CI 1.194–22.544, P= 0.028 and OR: 4.375, 95% CI 1.595–11.994, P= 0.004). The increased risk of NAFLD and morbid obesity in the high PRL group still existed after adjusting for age and Testosterone. Conclusion: Serum prolactin levels were positively associated with deterioration of metabolic indexes in male obese patients, as well as NAFLD and morbid obesity.

Background: 2q37 microdeletion syndrome is a rare clinical condition characterized by a series of physical abnormalities. Its Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO)-like manifestations and possible complication of biochemical abnormalities indicating PTH resistance greatly increased the likelihood of misdiagnosis with classic pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) caused by GNAS mutation or methylation alteration, even though there have only been six reports of such clinical occasions. Purpose: to investigate the underlying genetic defect in a male patient presenting hypocalcemia, elevated PTH and with a history of kyphosis. Method: clinical information was collected, while the DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and subjected to methylation-specific multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MS-MLPA) and exome sequencing. Result: Physical characteristics featuring short stature, obesity, round face, short neck, and shortened 4thmetacarpal and laboratory examination of the patient suggested the presence of PTH resistance, which is indicative of PHP. MS-MLPA did not reveal methylation alterations or deletions of GNAS, STX16or other monogenetic alterations responsible for iPPSDs, but WES revealed a long-range deletion of approximately 4.18 Mb of the 2q37 region that spanned AGAP1to NDUFA10, indicating that the patient had 2q37 microdeletion syndrome with PTH resistance. Conclusion: After undergoing MS-MLPA and exome sequencing, a novel deletion spanning 4.18 Mb on the 2q37 region was identified in one male patient, clarifying the diagnosis of 2q37 microdeletion syndrome with PTH resistance. The new genetic discovery added to our understanding of the molecular defects that cause inactivating PTH/PTH-related protein signaling disorders (iPPSDs).

AimsAdenomas of the ciliary body epithelium, including adenoma of the pigmented ciliary body epithelium (APCE) and adenoma of the non-pigmented ciliary body epithelium (ANPCE), are extremely rare, and most knowledge about them comes from sporadic case reports. The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive understanding of adenomas of the ciliary body epithelium and to identify the similarities and differences between APCE and ANPCE.MethodsThis study was a retrospective case series comprising data from 41 patients obtained from retrieved publications and five cases diagnosed at the Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital. The clinicopathological features, treatment and prognosis of APCE and ANPCE were compared using the non-parametric rank sum test, t-test and the χ2test.ResultsThe clinical and histopathological features and treatment were analogous between APCE (n=23) and ANPCE (n=23). The overall visual prognosis associated with the two tumours was good, with 63% of the patients having stable or improved vision after treatment. Enucleation was the primary cause of eventual vision loss (three in APCE vs two in ANPCE, p=0.001). Notably, iris invasion was commonly observed in patients with APCE (six in APCE vs zero in ANPCE, p=0.014), and iris invasion was associated with decreased vision eventually (p=0.003). Tumour size was irrelevant to the vision outcome (p=0.65). Metastasis or recurrence did not occur in any of the patients.ConclusionIn most cases, the clinicopathological features of ANPCE and APCE were similar. Iris invasion was commonly observed in patients with APCE, which was associated with poor visual prognosis.

Objective: Summarize and analyze the characteristics of patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 1 (MEN-1) who were diagnosed with malignant tumors that do not belong to MEN-1 components. Methods: Clinical data from patients with MEN-1 who visited Peking Union Medical College Hospital between April 2012 and April 2022 were collected. We compared the clinical characteristics of patients with malignant tumors outside of their MEN-1 components to those without additional tumors. MEN-1 gene testing was performed on most of these patients using Sanger sequencing, whole-exome sequencing, or MLPA. Results: A total of 221 MEN-1 patients were diagnosed, of which 23 (10.40%) were found to have malignant tumors that did not belong to MEN-1 components, including papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) (4.52%), breast cancer (1.81%), urologic neoplasms (1.35%), primary hepatic carcinoma (PCC) (0.09%), meningeal sarcoma (0.05%), glioblastoma (0.05%), cervical cancer (0.05%), and lung carcinoma (0.05%). MEN-1 gene mutations were identified in 11 patients, including missense mutations, frameshift mutations, and splice mutations. The prevalence of each endocrine neoplasm, particularly gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, was higher in MEN-1 patients with other malignant tumors compared to MEN-1 patients without malignant tumors. Conclusion: Our retrospective study revealed a higher incidence of non-MEN-1 component malignant tumors in MEN-1 patients, especially breast cancer, PTC, and urologic neoplasms. These patients also exhibit more severe clinical phenotypes of MEN-1.

The small-for-gestational-age (SGA) condition often causes serious problems. Therefore, identifying the risk factors for SGA is important. Traditional statistical methods such as stepwise logistic regression (LR) have been widely utilized to discover possible risk factors. However, other feature selection methods from machine learning field have rarely been employed for the task. In this paper, a comparison of five feature selection methods from both fields for SGA risk factors analysis is conducted for the first time. To evaluate their performance, four classification algorithms are used to construct SGA prediction models. The evaluation criteria are precision and the area under the receiver operator characteristic curve. Stepwise LR achieves the best performance among the five feature selection methods, because it conducts both a univariate significance test and a model significance test, which make it more suitable for handling the complex relations among features. The top 20 features selected by each feature selection method and the 27 features selected by four or five of them could assist physicians to revise traditional SGA evaluation models. Ensemble method is also exploited to build effective SGA prediction models based on the feature subsets, which is indeed superior compared with the individual ones shown in the results.

In the 5th generation (5G) positioning, the accurate values of environmental parameters, such as path loss exponent (PLE) and transmit power, are difficult to obtain accurately. Methods based on the difference of received signal strength (DRSS) can be utilized to solve the problems. An estimation method to obtain the distance ratio is given, and a distance ratio positioning model is proposed. The initial positioning results are calculated with linear least squares (LLS) algorithm. A Levenberg-Marquardt (LM)-based maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm is proposed to obtain the final result by performing a series of iterations. We have completed the 5G field data collection in urban environments and preprocessed the raw data in 5G field experiments. We also propose a judgment method for 5G positioning based on horizontal dilution of precision (HDOP). Compared to the state-of-the-art DRSS-based algorithms, the proposed method has the best positioning accuracy and achieves a positioning error of 43.8 m for 80% of samples with six base stations.

Constructing hetero-structured catalyst is promising but still challenging to achieve overall water splitting for hydrogen production with high efficiency. Herein, we developed a sulfide-based MoS2/Co1−xS@C hetero-structure for highly efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The carbon derived from the filter paper acts as a conducting carrier to ensure adequate exposure of the active sites guaranteed with improved catalytic stability. The unique hierarchical nano-sheets facilitate the charge and ion transfer by shortening the diffusion path during electro-catalysis. Meanwhile, the robust hetero-interfaces in MoS2/Co1−xS@C can expose rich electrochemical active sites and facilitate the charge transfer, which further cooperates synergistically toward electro-catalytic reactions. Consequently, the optimal MoS2/Co1−xS@C hetero-structures present small over-potentials toward HER (135 mV @ 10 mA·cm−2) and OER (230 mV @ 10 mA·cm−2). The MoS2/Co1−xS@C electrolyzer requires an ultralow voltage of 1.6 V at the current density of 10 mA·cm−2with excellent durability, outperforming the state-of-the-art electro-catalysts. This work sheds light on the design of the hetero-structured catalysts with interfacial engineering toward large-scale water splitting.

The distillation columns with no vapor–liquid-coupled flow streams are easier to control and operate, especially for the few industrial implementations of the Agrawal divided-wall column (ADWC). This work focuses on the dynamic control of the liquid-only transfer stream Agrawal divided-wall column (LTS-ADWC) for separating the quaternary alcohol system. First, the composition control structure (CCS) is proposed, and the dynamic results show that CCS could handle ±15% feed disturbance, and the purity of most products can be returned to the specified value. Subsequently, the temperature control structure (TCS) is designed on account of the control logic of the CCS. When facing ±15% feed disturbances, good dynamic performance can be achieved through TCS. The product’s purity stabilizes and returns to the near-nominal value in a shorter time. In brief, these works provide an attractive substitute for ADWC in academic research and industrial practice.

Purpose: To evaluate the incidence of malignancies in acromegaly and to identify risk factors for newly-diagnostic cancers, especially the excessive growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). Methods: A retrospective cohort including 1738 consecutive hospitalized patients with acromegaly in a single referral center between 2012 and 2020 (mean follow-up 4.3 years). A gender- and age-matched case-control study (280 patients from the cohort) was performed for risk factor analysis. Results: One hundred thirteen malignancies (67 diagnosed after acromegaly) were observed. The overall newly-diagnostic cancer risk of acromegaly was higher than the general population (standardized incidence ratio (SIR) 2.81; 95% CI 2.18–3.57). The risk of thyroid cancer (n= 33, SIR 21.42; 95% CI 13.74–30.08) and colorectal cancer (n= 8, SIR 3.17; 95% CI 1.37–6.25) was elevated. In the overall cohort, IGF-1 (ULN: 1.27 vs. 0.94, p= 0.057), GH (1.30 vs. 1.00 ng/ml, p= 0.12), and disease-controlled rate (34.9% vs. 45.9%, p= 0.203) at the last visit did not reach significance between patients with and without post-diagnostic cancer. In the case-control study, GH (1.80 vs. 0.90 ng/ml, p= 0.018) and IGF-1 (ULN: 1.27 vs. 0.91, p= 0.003) at the last visit were higher in patients with post-diagnostic cancers, with a lower disease-controlled rate. Elder age was a risk factor for cancer. Other metabolic comorbidities and the size of pituitary tumors were similar. Conclusion: The risk of malignancies, especially thyroid cancer, was increased in patients with acromegaly in our center. More cancer screening should be considered when managing acromegaly, especially in patients with higher posttreatment GH and IGF-1.

Endometriosis (EMS) is a prevalent gynecological condition lacking reliable diagnostic biomarkers. This prospective study aimed to analyze the potential of serum heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) as a diagnostic marker for EMS. Clinical features of 92 EMS patients and 52 controls were recorded, revealing significant differences in dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, pelvic pain, nulliparity, and CA125 levels. Serum HSF1 was upregulated in EMS patients, with higher levels in American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) III/IV than ASRM I/II. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis demonstrated good diagnostic function for serum HSF1 (AUC: 0.857, sensitivity: 91.30%, specificity: 63.46%). Serum HSF1, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and nulliparity were independent risk factors for EMS, while dysmenorrhea and serum HSF1 were independent risk factors for EMS severity. Additionally, the GSE25628 dataset was downloaded from the GEO database for differential analysis of gene expression. The HSF1 downstream target genes PTGES3, HSP90AA1, and HSPB1 showed significant differential expression in EMS, suggesting their involvement in the regulatory mechanism of HSF1 in EMS.
