Although the clinical use of self-adhesive flowable composite resins is convenient, the decision to use flowable or conventional composite resin remains controversial. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the in vitro bond strength of self-adhesive flowable composite resins to enamel or dentin compared with conventional composite resins using etch-and-rinse or self-etch adhesive systems. Two independent reviewers performed searches in the PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Wiley, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for studies reporting on the bond strength of self-adhesive flowable and conventional composite resins to enamel and dentin published from January 2010 up to September 2020. A meta-analysis software program was used for the meta-analysis. Comparisons were conducted using standardized mean differences considering the random-effects model (α=.05). Twenty-two studies were considered for the meta-analysis. Immediate and long-term bond strength to enamel was improved when a conventional composite resin was used in combination with an adhesive system (P <.001). Bond strength to dentin was improved by using an adhesive system in combination with a conventional composite resin (P <.001). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of irradiance and radiant exposure on the chemical-mechanical properties of a resin composite. A micro-hybrid resin composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) was investigated under two different irradiances: low (300 mW/cm2) and high (800 mW/cm2) and radiant exposures: 8 and 16 J/cm2. Four groups, named Low 8 J/cm2, High 8 J/cm2, Low 16 J/cm2, and High 16 J/cm2 were tested, and their flexural strengths, elastic moduli, depths of cure, and degrees of conversion were evaluated. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. A multiple linear regression model was used to correlate the irradiance and radiant exposure with dependent variables (a = 0.05). Irradiance and radiant exposure were found statistically significant for all dependent variables. The interaction between the factors was statistically significant only for the degree of conversion and elastic modulus. Group Low 16 J/cm2 exhibited a significantly superior performance in all the evaluated properties. Barring the degree of conversion, no significant differences were observed among the properties evaluated between the Low 8 J/cm2 and High 8 J/cm2 groups. The adjusted R2 values were high for the depth of cure and degree of conversion (0.58 and 0.96, respectively). Both irradiance and radiant exposure parameters play an important role in establishing the final properties of a micro-hybrid resin composite. The objective of this study was to formulate an experimental light-cured periodontal dressing containing alpha-humulene and to compare its physical, antimicrobial, and cytotoxicity properties with commercial gold standards (Barricaid® and Periobond®). Two periodontal dressing formulations were developed (a and b). The formulations were divided into 5 groups according to the alpha-humulene concentration as follows: Ea - control group, Ea1 - 1%, Ea5 - 5%, Ea10 - 10%, and Ea20 - 20%; Eb - control group, Eb1 - 1%, Eb5 - 5%, Eb10 - 10%, and Eb20 - 20%. Materials characterization was performed using the degree of conversion, cohesive strength, sorption, and solubility assays. Antimicrobial assay was performed using the modified direct contact test against E. faecalis and S. aureus. Cytotoxicity was assessed by the cell viability experiment using L929 fibroblasts. In general, the cohesive strength values of materials decreased as the alpha-humulene concentration increased. All the experimental dressings showed antimicrobial activity against both bacteria tested. Cell viability results for the Ea, Ea1, Eb, and Eb1 groups showed moderate cytotoxic effect. The formulations containing alpha-humulene showed similar behavior to the commercial references. Thus, formulations containing alpha-humulene have potential to be used as periodontal dressing. This paper evaluates the physicochemical and biological properties of experimental resin-based dual-cured calcium aluminate (CA) and calcium titanate (CTi) materials for vital pulp therapy (VPT). The experimental dual-cured materials were obtained as two pastes: a) Bis-EMA 10, PEG 400, DHEPT, EDAB, camphorquinone, and butylated hydroxytoluene; and b) fluoride ytterbium, Bis-EMA 10, Bis-EMA 30, benzoyl peroxide, and butylated hydroxytoluene. The materials were divided into six groups based on the added calcium component: MTA (MTA®, Angelus); CLQ (Clinker-Fillapex®, Angelus); CA (calcined at, 1200°C in pastes a and b); CA800 (calcined at 800°C in paste a); CA1200 (calcined at 1,200°C in paste a); and CTi (paste a). The real-time degree of conversion and rate of polymerization (n = 3), diametral tensile strength (n = 10), hydrogen potential (n = 15), calcium ion release (n = 10), water sorption and solubility (n = 10), and cell viability (n = 6) were evaluated. One-and two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test were used in the analysis of the parametric data, and Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's multiple tests were used to analyze the nonparametric data (α = 0.05). CLQ, CA800 and CA1200 had the highest diametral tensile strength. The water solubility of MTA was similar to that of CA800, CA1200 and CTi. CA800 and CA1200 resulted in cell viabilities similar to those of MTA and CLQ. To evaluate the ability of different esthetic archwires to retain oral biofilms in vitro. Seven different brands of coated orthodontic archwires were tested: two epoxy coated, two polytetrafluoroethylene coated, two rhodium coated, and one silver plus polymer coated. Conventional uncoated metallic archwires were used as controls. Streptococus mutans adherence to archwires was quantified by colony count following 24 hours of biolfilm growth, and total wire-associated biofilm was measured using a crystal violet staining assay. For both tests, two conditions were used: 0% sucrose and 3% sucrose. For statistical analysis, P <.05 was considered as statistically significant. For S. mutans colony forming units per biofilm, there were no statistically significant differences among the various archwires (P =.795 for 0% sucrose; P =.905 for 3% sucrose). Regarding total biofilm formed on archwires in the 3% sucrose condition, there were statistically significant differences in crystal violet staining only for the comparison between Niti Micro Dental White and Copper Ni-Ti wires (P <.05). The effect of the addition of nystatin and an alternative antifungal derived from pyrazoles in different commercial denture adhesives on their retentive efficacy, cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans was evaluated. Commercial denture adhesives were prepared with the inclusion of nystatin and 3,5-diaryl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole-1-carboximidamide (pyrazole) in three concentrations: 23.78 %w/w, 3.02 %w/w, and 0.31 %w/w (0.015 g, 0.0015 g, and 0.00015 g, respectively). The retentive efficacy was tested observing the influence of the medium, type of commercial denture type and the test condition (dipping). The antifungal action through disk diffusion and direct contact tests at 1, 4, 8 and 12 h and cytotoxic activity was evaluated in mouse fibroblasts (NIH/3T3) by the MTT reduction colorimetric assay. The addition of pyrazole and nystatin in commercial denture adhesives did not affect retentive efficacy rates and enhanced antifungal actions against Candida albicans. Results show a possibility of using denture adhesives as a delivery system for commercial antifungals (Nystatin) or pyrazole, with the second concentration (1,560 µg–3.02 %w/w) as the most efficient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility and mechanical properties of two commercially available and one experimental periodontal dressing materials. The cytotoxicity of Periobond®, Barricaid® and one experimental periodontal dressing based on Exothane® 8 monomer was tested on 3T3/NIH mouse fibroblast. Genotoxicity was assessed by micronuclei formation, and cell alterations were analyzed using light microscopy. Both biological assays were performed using the eluate obtained from specimens after 24, 72, or 168 hours of incubation. Mechanical characterization was assessed through the ultimate tensile strength and the water sorption and solubility tests. The significance level of a = 0.05 was used for all statistical analyses. All the materials promoted a cell viability lower than 60% in all evaluated times. In general, the cell viability was significantly reduced after 72 and 168h of specimens' incubation. Considering the factor material, there were not statistical differences in the cell viability (p = 0.156). The genotoxicity was not statistically significant among the groups in the different periods of time (p > 0.05). Differences in the ultimate tensile strength values were not statistically significant different among the groups (p = 0.125). Periobond® showed the higher water sorption values (p < 0.001). Regarding solubility, there were no statistical differences between the groups (p = 0.098). All the periodontal dressing materials evaluated in this study exerted a cytotoxic effect against mouse fibroblasts, and their toxicity became more evident over time. This study evaluated the effect of different adhesive protocols on the shear bond strength (SBS) of bulk-fill resin composite repaired with bulk-fill or conventional composite. Cylindrical bulk-fill resin composite specimens were prepared and allocated into groups according to the bonding strategy: no treatment, Silane+Scotch Bond Multipurpose (S+SBMP), Tetric N Bond Universal, and Single Bond Universal. Following bonding strategy, bulk-fill or conventional composite buildups were performed. After 24 h of storage in distilled water at 37°C, shear force was applied to the interface using a universal testing machine. The data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α=0.05). SBS was influenced by the bonding strategy and the composite used (p<0.001). Irrespective of the composite used, the group S+SBMP yielded the highest SBS values (p<0.001). To investigate the mechanical performance and fracture reliability of new generation, bulk-fill resin composites of different viscosities. Forty sound maxillary premolars were prepared into Class I cavities comprised of 5 mm width × 5 mm length × 5 mm thickness. The teeth were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 10) according to the restorative material: Negative control – without restoration; Positive control – conventional resin composite (Opallis; FGM) was applied using increments of up to 2.0 mm-thick; Bulk-Regular – bulk-fill resin composite of regular viscosity (Opus Bulk Fill; FGM) was applied using a single increment of 5 mm-thick; and Bulk-Flow – a low-viscosity bulk-fill resin composite (Opus Bulk Fill Flow; FGM) was applied as the first increment with ∼3.5 mm-thick, followed by two final increments of Opallis (∼1.5 mm-thick). The teeth were stored at 37 °C, for 24 h, and submitted to a mechanical testing machine (DL500; EMIC) under a compressive loading. Work of fracture (W f) was also obtained. All data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey (α = 5%). Reliability of restorations and probability of failure were analyzed by Weibull analysis. The non-restored teeth showed the weakest behavior of the study. All the restored groups demonstrated similar mechanical properties to each other (p ≥ 0.242). The positive and negative controls failed exclusively within the cohesiveness of enamel/dentin, whereas the bulk-fill-based restorations showed a mixture of cohesive and mixed failures. The restored groups showed an overall similar reliability, although the Bulk-Regular group demonstrated greater characteristic strength than the positive control. The novel bulk-fill resin composites of low and regular viscosities show promising application in the restoration of Class I cavities in premolars, demonstrating similar mechanical performance and reliability as compared with restorations prepared using conventional resin composites. From the bulk-fill materials, the version with regular viscosity presented the greatest compliant behavior of the study. Abstract Over the past years, significant effort has been dedicated to synthesizing low-shrinking formulations, however, development of dental composites with low volumetric shrinkage continues to be challenging. The purpose of this study was to synthesize a bisphenol allylic derivate (BPhADAC) and evaluate its inclusion in the formulation of a photopolymerizable dental composite resin, as a BisGMA diluent. Experimental (BisGMA/ BPhADAC) and control (BisGMA/TEGDMA) photopolymerizable composites were prepared. Double bond conversion, polymerization kinetics, volumetric shrinkage, water sorption, solubility, and flexural properties were investigated. The experimental composite showed higher degree of conversion values, less volumetric shrinkage and less water sorption than the control composite (p < 0.05). In addition, flexural strength between the materials was found to be similar. Two reviewers performed a literature search up to December 2016, without restriction of the year of publication, in seven databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, LILACS, IBECS, and BBO. Study selection Only laboratory studies that evaluated polymerization shrinkage stress by direct testing were included. Pilot studies, reviews and in vitro studies that evaluated polymerization shrinkage stress by indirect methods (e.g., microleakage or cuspal deflection measurements), finite elemental analysis, or theoretical and mathematical models were excluded. Of the 6113 eligible articles, 62 studies were included in the qualitative analysis, and the meta-analysis was performed with 58 studies. The composition strategy was subdivided according to the modified part of the material: filler phase, coupling agent, or resin matrix. A global comparison was performed with random-effects models (α = 0.05). The only subgroup that did not show a statistical difference between the alternative strategy and the control was ‘the use of alternative photo-initiators’ (p = 0.29). Conclusion Modification of the resin matrix made the largest contribution to minimizing stress development. The technology used for decreasing stress in the formulation of low-shrinkage and bulk-fill materials was shown to be a promising application for reducing and controlling stress development. The strategies were subdivided as follows: the use of an alternative technique protocol of placing the material inside the tooth cavity; the modification of the irradiation intensity or total energy delivered to the material; the use of an alternative light-curing source; or the use of an alternative photo-activation mode. All alternative strategies showed statistically significant differences when compared with their respective controls (p < 0.05). Conclusion The use of alternative light-curing sources contributed more to minimizing stress development than placing the material by means of an alternative technique protocol or by modifying the irradiant intensity or total energy delivered to the material during photo-activation. Moreover, the use of an alternative photo-activation mode (intermittent light, exponential, soft-start or pulse delay modes) was shown to be an effective strategy for reducing and controlling stress development in resin-based dental materials. Introduction This study evaluated the influence of cervical preflaring on the incidence of root dentin defects after root canal preparation. Methods Extracted human maxillary central incisors were selected and allocated to 1 control group and 12 experimental groups ( n = 15). Teeth in the control group were left unprepared, whereas the others were prepared using 2 reciprocating single-file systems (Reciproc and WaveOne [WO]), 3 full-sequence rotary systems (ProTaper Universal, ProTaper Next [PTN], and ProFile), and K-files driven by an oscillatory system, with and without cervical preflaring. Roots were then horizontally sectioned at 4, 8, and 12 mm from the apex, stained with 1% methylene blue, and viewed through a stereomicroscope at ×25 magnification. Slices were inspected and the absence/presence of defects (fractures, partial cracks, and craze lines) recorded. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Levene tests followed by the Tukey post hoc test at a significance level of P < .05. Results No root dentin defects were observed in the control group. WO was associated with a significantly higher number of defects than K-files, ProFile, and PTN ( P < .05), but was not significantly different from Reciproc or ProTaper Universal ( P > .05). Cervical preflaring significantly reduced the incidence of fractures and other defects in the WO and PTN groups ( P < .05). Conclusions All instruments caused root dentin defects, regardless of the enlargement or not of the cervical portion. This study evaluated the three-year lifespan of the bond to dentin of experimental self-etch adhesives containing benzodioxole derivatives - 1,3-benzodioxole (BDO) and piperonyl alcohol (PA) - as co-initiator alternative to amines. Adhesive resins were formulated using Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, HEMA, camphorquinone and different co-initiators: BDO, PA or ethyl 4-dimethylamino benzoate (EDAB - amine). An experimental selfetch primer was used to complete the two-step, self-etch adhesive system. Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) was used as commercial reference. Bond strength to human dentin was assessed by microtensile bond strength (µTBS) test, and failure mode was classified. Morphology of the dentin bonding interface was assessed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Irrespective of the dental adhesives evaluated, µTBS was higher after 24 hours compared with that after 1.5 and 3 years (p = 0.001). However, adhesives with BDO and PA as co-initiators showed significantly higher bond strength than the bonding resin with EDAB (p = 0.002), independent of the time evaluated. The commercial adhesive CSE showed similar bond strength compared with the other groups (p = 0.05). Mixed failures were mainly observed after 24 hours, while adhesive failures were more frequently observed after 1.5 and 3 years. No notable differences in homogeneity and continuity along the bonded interfaces were detected among the materials in the SEM analysis. This study evaluated the shear bond strength (SBS) of self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) to dentin and their physical-chemical properties. Five commercial SARCs were evaluated [SmartCem®2 - DENTSPLY (SC2); BisCem® - Bisco (BC); SeT PP® - SDI (SeT); Relyx U100® - 3M ESPE (U100) and YCEM® SA - Yller (YCEM)]. The SARCs were evaluated for SBS to dentin (n = 10) after 24 h, 6 months, and 12 months. The dentin demineralization caused by acidic monomers was observed by SEM, and pH-neutralization of eluate was observed for 24 h. Degree of conversion (DC), rate of polymerization (Rp), flexural strength (FS), and elastic modulus (E) were evaluated. Immediate SBS of SC2, SET, U100, and YCEM were statistically higher than that of BC (p < 0.001). After 12 months, all SARCs showed reduced SBS values and U100 showed values similar to those of SET and YCEM, and higher than those of BC and SC2 (p = 0.001). Demineralization pattern of SARCs was similar. At 24h, all SARCs showed no differences in the pH-value, except BC and U100 (p < 0.001). YCEM showed the highest Rp. U100, YCEM, and SC2 showed statistically higher FS (p<0.001) and E (p < 0.001) when compared with SET and BC. U100 and YCEM showed the best long-term bonding irrespective of the storage period. A significant reduction in SBS was found for all groups after 12 months. SBS was not shown to be correlated with physical-chemical properties, and appeared to be material-dependent. This study evaluated the anti-antibiofilm potential of silver methacrylate (Ag) or di- n -butyldimethacrylatetin (Sn) in experimental adhesive systems. Ag and Sn methacrylates were incorporated at 0.5 mol%, 1 mol% and 2 mol% in an adhesive resin. The anti-antibiofilm potential, degree of conversion (DC), microtensile bond strength (μTBS), water sorption/solubility (W SR/SL ), bonded interfaces pattern (SEM), cytotoxicity and leaching of Ag and Sn ions were evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed considering α = 0.05. Only Ag at 2% affected DC and μTBS. Ag at 1% and 2% and Sn at 1% and 2% showed anti-biofilm potential against Mutans streptococci. Ag at 1% and 2% and Sn at 2% showed a statistically significant difference to the control in W SR/SL (p < 0.05). The additions of metal methacrylate did not affect cell viability, being the adhesive resins statistically similar to controls. Leached metals of Ag were more than 100x higher than for Sn. Between the concentration tested, Ag and Sn methacrylate at 1% presented an anti-biofilm effect without altering the mechanical properties evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical properties, the antimicrobial effect, and the biocompatibility of dual polymerization experimental sealers after the incorporation of dibutyltin (ET) or calcium (EC) methacrylate at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 5%. Methods RealSeal (RS; SybronEndo, Glendora, CA) was used as a commercial control. Materials were evaluated regarding film thickness, degree of conversion, radiopacity, antimicrobial effect against Enterococcus faecalis using the modified direct contact test, and cell viability. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by the Tukey test or the Student-Newman-Keuls test in SigmaPlot 12.0 (Systat Software, Inc, Point Richmond, CA) ( P = .05). Results The film thickness of the dibutyltin and calcium were greater than experimental sealers following the standards given by ISO 6876:2012. For degree of conversion, dual polymerization was not influenced by the addition of metal methacrylate. Regarding the modified direct contact test, calcium and dibutyltin at all concentrations showed antimicrobial activity when compared with the positive control after 48 hours of contact ( P < .05). In cell viability, ET at all concentrations showed high cytotoxicity similar to RS, and EC at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 2% showed moderate cytotoxicity that was less than 5% of calcium and RS. Conclusions It was concluded that calcium and dibutyltin methacrylate incorporation in experimental sealers promoted the antimicrobial effect. The incorporation of calcium methacrylate at 0.5%, 1%, and 2% seemed to be a good treatment option to provide antimicrobial activity associated with moderate cytotoxicity and adequate physical properties. Introduction Dental pulp–derived stem cells (DPSCs) have the potential to regenerate dentin and dental pulp tissue because of their differentiation capacity and angiogenic properties. However, for regenerative approaches to gain regulatory and clinical acceptance, protocols are needed to determine more feasible ways to cultivate DPSCs, namely, without the use of xenogeneic-derived components (animal sera) and exogenous growth factors. Methods In this study, human DPSCs were isolated from third molars and expanded in standard culture conditions containing fetal bovine serum (DPSCs-FBS) or conditions containing human serum (DPSCs-HS). After cell characterization and evaluation of their angiogenic secretome, DPSCs were seeded in tooth slice/scaffolds and implanted subcutaneously into immunodeficient mice. After 30 days, tooth slices were retrieved and evaluated for dental pulp tissue regeneration. Immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy were used to quantify blood vessel formation and evaluate predentin and dentin formation. Results After culture, DPSCs-HS produced concentrations of angiogenic growth factors equivalent to DPSCs-FBS. Additionally, in DPSCs-HS, several angiogenic factors were produced in at least 1-fold higher concentrations than in DPSCs-FBS. In vivo , it was determined that DPSCs-HS produced a robust angiogenic response and regeneration of dentin equivalent to DPSCs-FBS. Conclusions These findings show that DPSCs can be isolated and expanded to clinical scale numbers in media devoid of animal serum or exogenous growth factors and still maintain their pulp regenerative properties. A randomized, double-blind, split-mouth clinical trial was performed compared the desensitizing efficacy of the resin-modified glass ionomer cement (GIC) ClinproTM XT (3M ESPE, Minnesota, USA) and the conventional GIC Vidrion R (SS White, Gloucester, UK) in a 6-month follow-up. Subjects were required to have at least two teeth with dentin hypersensitivity. Teeth were divided at random into 2 groups, one group received Clinpro XT and the other conventional GIC Vidrion R. Treatments were assessed by tactile and air blast tests using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) at baseline, after 20 minutes, and at 7, 15, 21, 30, 90 and 180 days post-treatment. Twenty subjects (152 teeth) were included. Both tests (tactile and air blast) showed a significant reduction of dentin hypersensitivity immediately after the application of Vidrion R and Clinpro XT (20 min). VAS scores obtained along the 6-month follow-up were statistically lower when compared to initial rates (p < 0.05). Both GIC were able to reduce dentin hypersensitivity up to 6-month post-treatment period without statistically significant differences among them (p > 0.05). Introduction In this study, the effect of different post surface treatments on the retention of glass fiber–reinforced post to root dentin was evaluated. The hypotheses tested were (1) post silanization would not improve its retention and (2) the application of silane plus resin adhesive on the post would enhance its retention. Methods After root canal preparation, 4 different protocols ( n = 5) of post surface treatment were evaluated, combined with or without silane (Silane coupling agent) and adhesive (Scotchbond Multipurpose): silane + adhesive (S/A), only silane, only adhesive, or no treatment (control). RelyX ARC was used for post cementation. Next, specimens were subjected to push-out bond strength testing, and data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Tukey test ( P < .05). Results S/A showed higher bond strength than other protocols in the middle and coronal root regions ( P < .001). Only silane did not enhance post retention compared with control ( P > .05). The root dentin region influenced bond strength results only in the S/A group. Conclusions Whereas silanization as the only post surface treatment did not improve retention, the combination of silane plus resin adhesive enhanced post retention to dentin in the middle and coronal root regions. Aim: To evaluate the immediate microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of three two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive systems applied under different dentin surface moisture conditions. Methods: Class V cavities were prepared in seventy-two bovine incisors. Each tooth was randomly allocated into three groups, according to the adhesive system used: Single Bond 2 (SB), Prime & Bond 2.1 (PB) and XP Bond (XPB). Each group was divided in three subgroups, according to the dentin moisture condition: over-wet, moist and dry (n=8). For the moist subgroups the adhesive was applied as to the manufacturer's instructions; for the over-wet ones, without drying the cavity after the rinsing procedure; and for the dry subgroups, drying the surface for 20 s. The teeth were restored with Filtek Z-250 and stored in distilled water (24 h); next, each restoration was sectioned in beam-shaped specimens which were stored for 24 h at 37 °C. Each specimen was submitted to µTBS test (EMIC), and data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (p<0.05). Results: There was a statistically significant interaction between the adhesive system type and the dentin surface moisture condition (p=0.003). SB and XPB presented higher bond strength in the moist dentin condition, and PB showed high µTBS values in the dry substrate. Conclusions: The moisture condition influenced the bond strength between the adhesives and dentin. SB performed better in the moist condition, whereas PB and XPB showed satisfactory bond strength in the moist and in the dry substrates. Abstract: Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare several physicochemical properties including working and setting times, flow, solubility, and water absorption of a recent calcium silicate–based sealer (MTA Fillapex; Angelus, Londrina, Brazil) and an epoxy resin–based sealer (AH Plus; Dentsply, Konstanz, Germany). Methods: The materials were handled following the manufacturer's instructions. The working time and flow were tested according to ISO 6876:2001 and the setting time according to American Society for Testing and Materials C266. For solubility and water absorption tests, the materials were placed into polyvinyl chloride molds (8 × 1.6 mm). The samples (n = 10 for each material and test) were placed in a cylindrical polystyrene-sealed container with 20 mL deionized water at 37°C. At 1, 7, 14, and 28 days, the samples were removed from the solutions and blotted dry for solubility and water absorption tests. The data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance with the Tukey test (P < .05). Results: MTA Fillapex showed the lowest values of flow, working and setting times, solubility, and water absorption (P < .05). The solubility and water absorption increased significantly over time for both materials in a 1- to 28-day period (P < .05). Conclusions: MTA Fillapex showed suitable physical properties to be used as an endodontic sealer. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We evaluated the effect of activation mode (immediate or delayed light activation vs. no light activation) on diametral tensile strength (DTS), elastic modulus, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and degree of conversion (DC) in dual-cured resin cements. Three resin cements were evaluated: Enforce, RelyX ARC, and Panavia F. The mixed cements were inserted into circular molds for the DTS test and into dumbbell-shaped molds for the UTS test. Inside the molds, the cements were light-activated either imme-diately or after 5 min (delayed light activation). If no light activation was performed, the materials were protected from light exposure (control). The DTS and UTS tests were performed until fracture. The elastic modulus was calculated using data from the DTS test, and DC was evaluated 24 h after manipulation using near-infrared spectroscopy. Data for each variable were individually analyzed by two-way ANOVA and the post-hoc Tukey test (a = 0.05). Regarding DTS, activation mode influenced only Panavia F specimens, which had the lowest DTS values in the absence of light activation. Activation mode did not influence the elastic modulus or UTS of any resin cement evaluated. Immediate light activation yielded higher DC values as compared with the absence of light activation. This study evaluated the histological response and the expression of tenascin (TN) and fibro-nectin (FN) after pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) or calcium hydroxide (CH). Class V cavities and pulp exposure were performed in 40 primary pig teeth. The pulps were capped with either MTA or CH, and the cavities were sealed with resin-modified glass ionomer cement. CH was used as a control. Seven and 70 days posttreatment, the animals were sacrificed and teeth were prepared for histological evaluation. TN and FN were detected by immunostaining. A severe inflammatory response was observed after 7 days in the CH group (p<0.043), while in the MTA group, a mild response was observed. Similar reparative dentin deposition was observed after 70 days for both groups (p<0.005). The expression of FN and TN was similar for both groups in the two periods evaluated. Abstract: This study investigated the impact of immediate and delayed light activation on self-polymerization of a model dual-cured luting agent. The material presented the following components: base paste – 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxyprop-1-oxy)phenyl]propane/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), camphorquinone, dimethyl-p-toluidine, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), glass fillers; catalyst paste – bisphenol-A ethoxylated dimethacrylate/TEGDMA, benzoyl peroxide, BHT, fillers. The pastes were mixed and seven polymerization scenarios tested: immediate light activation using low (5Jcm−2) or high (20Jcm−2) energy dose; delayed light activation (after 2min – short delay) using low or high dose; delayed light activation (after 10min – long delay) using low or high dose; and self-polymerization only. The degree of conversion (DC) and rate of polymerization (R p) were evaluated for 30min by real-time infrared spectroscopy. The lowest DC was detected for the self-polymerized and immediate–low dose groups, whereas the immediate–high dose and short delay–high dose groups showed the highest values. For the self-polymerized and immediate–high dose samples, R p max was detected after approximately 7s, whereas this took approximately 14s for the immediate–low dose group. R p max for the immediate–high dose group was higher than for the self-polymerized sample, which in turn was higher than for the immediate–low dose group. R p max for the short delay groups was higher than for the long delay groups. In conclusion, the extent of self-polymerization was influenced by the light dose reaching the material, which was dependent on high radiant exposure for optimal polymerization and the moment at which the light was applied; the short delay increased the DC for lower doses, while also generally decreasing the R p for all scenarios. This study evaluated the rate of polymerization (Rp) and degree of conversion (DC) of Panavia F when self- or dual-activated, and the influence of either using or not using a primer containing coinitiators (ED Primer) mixed with the material. The conversion reaction was monitored using real-time infrared spectroscopy with an attenuated total reflectance device. The cement was mixed, put onto the device and irradiated for 20 s (dual-cured). A selfcured group was also prepared. Similarly, dual- and self-cured groups were evaluated after mixing ED Primer with the cement. The DC was monitored for 1 h and the Rp was calculated. For the dual-cured mode, the most significant effect of ED Primer was to reduce the Rpmax. For the self-cured mode, the primer was shown to be essential for polymerization of Panavia F: without ED Primer, the reaction started only after approximately 500 s, with a final DC of 50%, whereas a continuous increase in conversion was observed for the group mixed with ED Primer, with a final DC of 74%. This study investigated the influence of a papain-based gel (Papacárie) for chemo-mechanical caries removal on bond strength to dentin. Human molars were assigned to the following groups: Group 1: sound teeth were flattened to expose dentin; Group 2: after flattening of surfaces, the papain-based gel was applied on the sound dentin; Group 3: overlying enamel from carious teeth was removed and mechanical ex- cavation of dentin was conducted; Group 4: chemo-mechanical excavation of carious dentin was conducted using the papain-based gel. The Prime&Bond NT or Clearfil SE Bond adhesive systems were used for restorative procedures. A microtensile bond strength test was performed, and the modes of failure were determined under SEM. The data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p ⩽ 0.05). No significant differences were observed between the sound dentin groups. For both excavation methods, Clearfil presented a significantly higher bond strength than Prime&Bond NT. Also, for Clearfil, the mechanically excavated samples disclosed a significantly higher bond strength than the chemo-mechanically ones. For Prime&Bond NT, no significant differences were detected between the excavation methods. Predominance of mixed failures for the sound substrate and of adhesive failures for the carious dentin one was detected. The bond strength to carious dentin of the self-etching system was negatively affected by chemo-mechanical excavation using the papain-based gel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the kinetics of conversion of Scotchbond Multi-purpose Plus (3M ESPE, St Paul, MN) and Prime&Bond NT (Dentsply De Trey, Konstanz, Germany) used in light-cured, self-cured, or dual-cured versions. The adhesive systems were used in the light-cured version (without the use of chemical initiator) or mixed with its respective chemical initiator either with light activation (dual-cured) or not (self-cured). The degree of conversion (DC) was monitored as a function of time during 5 minutes with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer equipped with an attenuated total reflectance device. Light-cured and dual-cured modes of Scotchbond Multi-purpose Plus presented the highest DC at 5 minutes. The addition of the self-cure activator (dual-cured mode) to Prime&Bond NT reduced the DC. For the self-cured versions, only the Scotchbond Multi-purpose Plus presented any polymerization reaction at 5 minutes. For the two bonding systems tested, it appears that light curing of the adhesive is important in order to reach a high DC in the first moments after the bonding procedure. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aim: The aim was to compare the clinical wear of two compomers (F2000; 3M/ESPE and Dyract AP; Dentsply) placed in occlusal cavities in permanent molars within a two-year follow-up period using an indirect method of evaluation. Methods: Twenty-one patients, whose treatment plans included Class I restorations, were selected. Each patient received two occlusal Class I restorations in permanent molars. One and 2 years after placement of the restorations, the 21 teeth restored with each material were submitted to wear evaluation. Polyvinylsiloxane impressions were taken and casts were made (baseline, 1 year and 2 years). The casts were classified by comparative evaluation using sets of 18 calibrated standard models (0 to 900 ìm), according to Leinfelder's indirect method. Paired and unpaired t-tests were used for comparisons between the evaluations for the same material and between materials for each evaluation period, respectively. Results: The occlusal wear was higher after 2 years than after 1 year (p<0.001). The t-test demonstrated that the wear values, after 1 year, were similar for both compomers (F2000=17.6 ìm and Dyract AP=12.8 ìm). However, after 2 years, F2000 restorations (40.6 ìm) suffered significantly more wear (p<0.05) than Dyract AP restorations (29.8 ìm). Although compomers performed similarly after 1 year, Dyract showed less occlusal wear after 2 years. All occlusal Class I compomer restorations presented more occlusal wear after 2 years, but were considered as clinically acceptable within the evaluation period. Emerging understanding about interactions between stem cells, scaffolds, and morphogenic factors has accelerated translational research in the field of dental pulp tissue engineering. Dental pulp stem cells constitute a subpopulation of cells endowed with self-renewal and multipotency. Dental pulp stem cells seeded in biodegradable scaffolds and exposed to dentin-derived morphogenic factors give rise to a pulplike tissue capable of generating new dentin. Notably, dentin-derived proteins are sufficient to induce dental pulp stem cell differentiation into odontoblasts. Ongoing work is focused on developing ways of mobilizing dentin-derived proteins and disinfecting the root canal of necrotic teeth without compromising the morphogenic potential of these signaling molecules. On the other hand, dentin by itself does not appear to be capable of inducing endothelial differentiation of dental pulp stem cells despite the well-known presence of angiogenic factors in dentin. This is particularly relevant in the context of dental pulp tissue engineering in full root canals in which access to blood supply is limited to the apical foramina. To address this challenge, scientists are looking at ways to use the scaffold as a controlled-release device for angiogenic factors. The aim of this article was to present and discuss current strategies to functionalize injectable scaffolds and customize them for dental pulp tissue engineering. The long-term goal of this work is to develop stem cell–based therapies that enable the engineering of functional dental pulps capable of generating new tubular dentin in humans. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of 2 extracellullar matrix glycoproteins, fibronectin (FNC) and tenascin (TNC), following direct pulp capping with calcium hydroxide (CH). Third molars scheduled for extraction were used. Standardized class I cavities with pulp exposures were prepared. After control of bleeding, CH powder was applied in the exposure sites, which were covered with CH cement (Dycal; Dentsply) and the cavities were filled with zinc oxide–eugenol cement. Three teeth were extracted at each post-treatment period (1, 7, 14, and 30 days). Demineralized and paraffin-embedded specimens were stained for histologic technique (hematoxylin-eosin) and for immunohistochemical analysis. Anti-TNC and anti-FNC monoclonal antibodies were used with the streptavidin-biotin complex method. Generally, similar patterns of immunohistochemical expression were observed for TNC and FNC in the pulp tissue as a whole. In the exposure site, TNC immunostaining increased over time, exhibiting a thicker immunostaining pattern within 30 days.
