Concerns have been raised about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals with lived experience of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). Yet, few efforts have explored this. Accordingly, using a mixed-methods approach, we sought to examine whether emerging adults who have self-injured experienced changes in NSSI urges and behavior during the pandemic and what may have accounted for these changes. To do so, university students with lived experience of NSSI completed online questions asking about NSSI and self-reported changes in urges and behavior since the onset of COVID-19. They then answered open-ended questions asking what contributed to these changes and how they have coped during this timeframe. Approximately 80% of participants reported no change or a decrease in NSSI urges and behavior. Participants discussed removal from stressors (e.g., social stress) that previously evoked NSSI, as well as having time for self-care and to develop resilience as accounting for this. Nevertheless, some participants reported challenges amid the pandemic (i.e., exacerbated stress, isolation); approximately one fifth of participants reported increases in NSSI urges and behavior. Our findings add to recent evidence that many individuals with prior mental health difficulties, including NSSI, can demonstrate resilience in the face of collective adversity. Research and clinician implications are discussed.

Suicide is a public-health concern that has been linked to multiple biological, psychological, and social risk factors. Rural living is purported to be a unique risk for suicide for myriad reasons. Yet there are some concerns with rural suicidology, notably regarding defining and operationalizing “rural.” Furthermore, the last comprehensive review of rural suicide is approximately 10 years old. With this in mind, in the current review, we offer (a) a comprehensive and updated overview of the operationalization and variability of rural in rural suicidology and (b) a summary of differences in direct and indirect suicide factors between rural and nonrural regions and whether potential differences depend on how rural is operationalized. Results indicate a high degree of heterogeneity in defining rural, rendering conclusions about both direct and indirect rural suicide risks unclear. We therefore present a set of recommendations for rural suicidologists to apply to enhance the understanding of suicide and, ultimately, prevent death by suicide in rural regions.

We examine the absolute magnitudes and light-curve shapes of 14 nearby (redshift z = 0.004-0.027) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) observed in the ultraviolet (UV) with the Swift Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope. Colors and absolute magnitudes are calculated using both a standard Milky Way extinction law and one for the Large Magellanic Cloud that has been modified by circumstellar scattering. We find very different behavior in the near-UV filters (uvw1 rc covering [?]2600-3300 A after removing optical light, and u [?] 3000-4000 A) compared to a mid-UV filter (uvm2 [?]2000-2400 A). The uvw1 rc - b colors show a scatter of [?]0.3 mag while uvm2-b scatters by nearly 0.9 mag. Similarly, while the scatter in colors between neighboring filters is small in the optical and somewhat larger in the near-UV, the large scatter in the uvm2 - uvw1 colors implies significantly larger spectral variability below 2600 A. We find that in the near-UV the absolute magnitudes at peak brightness of normal SNe Ia in our sample are correlated with the optical decay rate with a scatter of 0.4 mag, comparable to that found for the optical in our sample. However, in the mid-UV the scatter is larger, [?]1 mag, possibly indicating differences in metallicity. We find no strong correlation between either the UV light-curve shapes or the UV colors and the UV absolute magnitudes. With larger samples, the UV luminosity might be useful as an additional constraint to help determine distance, extinction, and metallicity in order to improve the utility of SNe Ia as standardized candles.

ABSTRACTABSTRACT The odontogenic keratocyst, OKC, is a very aggressive intraosseos lesion with a recurrence rate of approximately 25 percent to 60 percent.1The tendency for this lesion to “return” after surgical treatment has prompted studies to obtain more information concerning the inherent nature of the lesion. The OKC lesions are usually treated with enucleation of the soft tissue lining, curettage and ostectomy of the bony margins, or with more aggressive block resection. The purpose of this study was to characterize the multifocal aspect of the OKC and to demonstrate the presence of cystic lesions remote from the margins of the primarily diagnosed cyst itself. A retrospective chart review was conducted of seven patients who had sustained a long history of recurrent OKCs. Three types of documentation were reviewed for each patient:■ Orthopantomograms, cephalograms, and CT scans, which had been taken over the long-term course of the disease,■ Detailed operation reports of surgical procedures to treat the OKC lesions, and■ Large histologic specimens from the six patients who received total resection of the involved mandibular bodies.These hemimandibulectomy slides offered a unique opportunity to observe OKC activity throughout a wide osseous area. All patients had been operated multiple times over a period of 10 to 21 years, coming eventually to mandibular resection. The operating surgeon in all of the cases was one of the authors, Philip J. Boyne, DMD, MS, DSc. All patients exhibited the multifocal nature of OKCs with demonstrable cyst formation at distant sites in the mandible. Two patients had local recurrences at the margins of the primary lesion in addition to cyst formation at distant sites. The authors concluded that clinicians should respect the multifocal nature of OKCs. The “recurrences” observed in OKCs may not necessarily be due to the degree of skill of the surgeon or the technique used to eradicate the primary cyst, but instead are probably a reflection of the multifocal nature of the pathologic lesion itself. The OKC is a very aggressive intraosseos lesion of the jaws, which not infrequently clinicians detect in the process of routine oral examination.2

We identify minimal observing cadence requirements that enable photometric astronomical surveys to detect and recognize fast and explosive transients and fast transient features. Observations in two different filters within a short time window (e.g., g-and-i, or r-and-z, within <0.5 hr) and a repeat of one of those filters with a longer time window (e.g., >1.5 hr) are desirable for this purpose. Such an observing strategy delivers both the color and light curve evolution of transients on the same night. This allows the identification and initial characterization of fast transient-or fast features of longer timescale transients-such as rapidly declining supernovae, kilonovae, and the signatures of SN ejecta interacting with binary companion stars or circumstellar material. Some of these extragalactic transients are intrinsically rare and generally all hard to find, thus upcoming surveys like the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) could dramatically improve our understanding of their origin and properties. We colloquially refer to such a strategy implementation for the LSST as the Presto-Color strategy (rapid-color). This cadence's minimal requirements allow for overall optimization of a survey for other science goals.

We present a cadence optimization strategy to unveil a large population of kilonovae using optical imaging alone. These transients are generated during binary neutron star and potentially neutron star-black hole mergers and are electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational-wave signals detectable in nearby events with Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo, and other interferometers that will be online in the near future. Discovering a large population of kilonovae will allow us to determine how heavy-element production varies with the intrinsic parameters of the merger and across cosmic time. The rate of binary neutron star mergers is still uncertain, but only few (?15) events with associated kilonovae may be detectable per year within the horizon of next-generation ground-based interferometers. The rapid evolution (?days) at optical/infrared wavelengths, relatively low luminosity, and the low volumetric rate of kilonovae makes their discovery difficult, especially during blind surveys of the sky. We propose future large surveys to adopt a rolling cadence in which g-iobservations are taken nightly for blocks of 10 consecutive nights. With the current baseline2018a cadence designed for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), ?7.5 poorly sampled kilonovae are expected to be detected in both the Wide Fast Deep (WFD) and Deep Drilling Fields (DDF) surveys per year, under optimistic assumptions on their rate, duration, and luminosity. We estimate the proposed strategy to return up to ?272 GW170817-like kilonovae throughout the LSST WFD survey, discovered independently from gravitational-wave triggers.
