2. Robotic versus open pancreaticoduodenectomy: a meta-analysis of short-term outcomes

- Abstract
Background: Although robotic surgery is popular around the world, its safety and efficacy over classical open surgery is still controversial. The purpose of this article is to compare the safety and efficacy of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) and open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD). Methods: A literature search of PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library database up to July 29, 2018 was performed and the meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.2 software with Fixed and random effects models applied. The IRB approval and written consent were not needed for this paper. Results: Twelve non-randomized retrospective studies and 1 non-randomized prospective study consisting of 2403 patients were included in this meta-analysis. There were 788 (33%) patients in the RPD group and 1615 (67%) patients in the OPD group. Although RPD was associated with a longer operative time (weighted mean difference [WMD]: 71.74 min; 95% CI 23.37–120.12; p= 0.004), patient might benefit from less blood loss (WMD: − 374.03 ml; 95% CI − 506.84 to − 241.21; p< 0.00001), shorter length of stay (WMD: − 5.19 day; 95% CI − 8.42 to − 1.97; p= 0.002), and lower wound infection rate (odds ratio: 0.17; 95% CI 0.04–0.80; p= 0.02). No statistically significant difference was observed in positive margin rate, lymph nodes harvested, postoperative complications, reoperation or readmission rate, and mortality rate. Conclusions: Robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy is a safe and feasible alternative to open pancreaticoduodenectomy with regard to short-term outcomes. Further studies on the long-term outcomes of these surgical techniques are needed.

3. Prevalence and Predictors of PTSD During the Initial Stage of COVID-19 Epidemic among Female College Students in China

- Abstract
Background College students are vulnerable and may experience high stress due to COVID-19, especially girls. This study aims to identify posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related factors among the target population during the initial phases of the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods In the initial phase of COVID-19 epidemic (February 23 to March 5, 2020), 2205 female college students from six provinces in mainland China were enrolled in this study and completed the online survey about the cognitive status of COVID-19, including the Impact of Event Scale-6, the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale and a self-developed 10-item Perceived threat scale. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were performed using SPSS software to explore the determinants of PTSD symptoms.Results PTSD symptoms were prevalent in female college students, and 34.20% met the cut-off for PTSD. Self-reported fair or poor health (AOR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.22-2.59), high concern about COVID-19 (AOR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.35-2.03), beliefs that “COVID-19 can cause a global outbreak” (AOR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.02-1.56), the perception of “risk of infection” (AOR = 2.46, 95% CI: 2.16–2.81), beliefs that “closed management” and “COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern” would have an impact, and the fear of “impact on life planning” were all positively associated with PTSD (AOR = 1.37, 1.22, and 1.29, respectively); however, perceived social support from family (AOR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.70-0.93) was negatively associated with PTSD. Among the significant variables at the bivariate level, multivariate logistic regression revealed that the greatest protector for PTSD was the high knowledge score (AOR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.60–0.90), while had confirmed cases among relatives and friends (AOR = 7.70, 95% CI: 1.28-46.25) was the strongest predictor of PTSD.Conclusions In summary, PTSD symptoms were prevalent among female college students in China during the COVID-19 epidemic. Targeting vulnerable populations to improve their knowledge about COVID-19 and create an atmosphere of social support would be beneficial. Moreover, the joint efforts from family, school administrators, and policymakers are essential to improve the mental health of the female students during the COVID-19 epidemic.

4. Differential epigenetic profiles induced by sodium selenite in breast cancer cells.

Selenium (Se) was a potential anticancer micronutrient with proposed epigenetic effect. However, the Se-induced epigenome in breast cancer cells was yet to be studied. The profiles of DNA methylation, microRNA (miRNA), long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), and message RNA (mRNA) in breast cancer cells treated with sodium selenite were examined by microarrays. We verified the epigenetic modifications by integrating their predicted target genes and differentially expressed mRNAs. The epigenetically regulated genes were further validated in a breast cancer cohort by associating with tumor progression. We conducted a series of bioinformatics analyses to assess the biological function of these validated genes and identified the critical genes. The Se-induced epigenome regulated the expression of 959 genes, and 349 of them were further validated in the breast cancer cohort. Biological function analyses suggested that these validated genes were enriched in several cancer-related pathways, such as PI3K/Akt and metabolic pathways. Based on the degrees of expression change, hazard ratio difference, and connectivity, NEDD4L and FMO5 were identified as the critical genes. These results confirmed the epigenetic effects of sodium selenite and revealed the epigenetic profiles in breast cancer cells, which would help understand the mechanisms of Se against breast cancer.
