Here, we synthesize a Au@Fe3O4core@shell system with a highly uniform unprecedented star-like shell morphology with combined plasmonic and magnetic properties. An advanced electron microscopy characterization allows assessing the multifaceted nature of the Au core and its role in the growth of the peculiar epitaxial star-like shell with excellent crystallinity and homogeneity. Magnetometry and magneto-optical spectroscopy revealed a pure magnetite shell, with a superior saturation magnetization compared to similar Au@Fe3O4heterostructures reported in the literature, which is ascribed to the star-like morphology, as well as to the large thickness of the shell. Of note, Au@Fe3O4nanostar-loaded cancer cells displayed magneto-mechanical stress under a low frequency external alternating magnetic field (few tens of Hz). On the other hand, such a uniform, homogeneous, and thick magnetite shell enables the shift of the plasmonic resonance of the Au core to 640 nm, which is the largest red shift achievable in Au@Fe3O4homogeneous core@shell systems, prompting application in photothermal therapy and optical imaging in the first biologically transparent window. Preliminary experiments performing irradiation of a stable water suspension of the nanostar and Au@Fe3O4-loaded cancer cell culture suspension at 658 nm confirmed their optical response and their suitability for photothermal therapy. The outstanding features of the prepared system can be thus potentially exploited as a multifunctional platform for magnetic-plasmonic applications.

Intermetallic alloys and compounds undergoing diffusionless solid–solid phase transformations are an important class of high-damping materials. Some representatives of these alloys and compounds also possess good magnetic properties. For such materials, a combination of the magnetoelastic coupling and a high mobility of the martensitic variants can bring about new features of the internal friction and allows one to control the damping capacity by an external magnetic field. Here we review damping properties of magnetically ordered shape memory alloys.

The effect of the deposition temperature (Tdep) on the crystallographic orientation of pulsed laser-deposited FeCo/MgO(100) thin film was determined by means of X-ray reflectivity and high resolution trasmission electron microscopy analysis and was correlated with the magnetic anisotropy properties measured by angle dependent hysteresis loops. Highly textured films with a bcc structure and very smooth surface were obtained even at room temperature, the film being [100] and [110] oriented, at Tdep= 25 °C and 150 °C, respectively. The cubic symmetry is reflected in the angular dependence of remanent magnetization, showing a 4-fold character, whose in-plane distribution is consistent with the different crystallographic orientations of the films. The high structural quality, even at room temperature, is reflected in a high value of the saturation magnetization and low coercivity, matching the requirements for technological applications.

We report on the first study of magnetic and structural properties of Co2Fe1-xTixGa thin films prepared by a magnetron sputtering technique. The presence of well-defined (220) and (422) peaks corresponding to the principal reflection of the Heusler structure were revealed by XRD analysis. Results of magnetic properties measurements of the thin films showed that annealed samples have uniaxial in-plane anisotropy but magnetic properties of as-prepared samples exhibit anisotropy within the plane. The annealed thin films demonstrate complex magnetization process which can be attributed to the difference in the magnetic properties of two coexisting phases with B2 and L21 structural ordering.

Nano systems with combined magnetic and plasmonic functionalities have become an active topic of research in recent years. By an adequate internal architecture of the constituting components, the magneto-optical activity of these systems can be greatly intensified due to the electromagnetic field enhancement associated with the plasmon resonance. One of such approaches is a creating of magnetoplasmonic crystals (MPlCs) based on the noble and ferromagnetic metals. This work represents results of the investigation of the magneto-optical (MO) properties of the magnetoplasmonic structure, and parameters of the magnetic field sensor based on such structures. Possibility of creation of the magnetic field sensor with different properties is represented.

The Influence of the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) layers position and of the thickness of antiferromagnetic (AFM) layer on magnetic properties of FM/AFM bilayer structures was studied. Angular dependences of the coercive force and exchange bias field were analyzed for NiFe/IrMn bilayer structures with different thickness of AFM layer. In some samples we observed the maximum values of the exchange bias field in the directions different from the magnetic easy axis.

The objective of this work has been to analyze the high-temperature behavior of magnetically single-and biphase microwires because of its interest from fundamental and applications viewpoints. Two alloy compositions with amorphous structure covered by glass have been prepared as magnetically single phase microwires by quenching & drawing technique: CoFe-based with near zero saturation magnetostriction constant and Fe-based with positive saturation magnetostriction constant. The same wires were used as the core for magnetically biphase microwires. Second CoNi phase was deposited by electroplating. Magnitudes as saturation magnetization and hysteresis parameters are determined in the temperature range from room temperature up to 1200 K. We proceed to a comparative analysis of their magnetic behaviour at different temperatures as well as after cooling down to room temperature. Information on the Curie temperature of different phases and on the influence of heating process on the magnetic properties is thus derived.

The effect of annealing under applied stress on magnetic properties of Co-based or CoFeNi-based glass-coated microwires was studied. It was found that CoFeNi-based microwires became bistable after annealing because of changing of magnetostriction constant sign, while Co-based microwires keep S-shape of hysteresis loop. The domain wall dynamics of microwires which became bistable was also investigated and it was shown that microwires with acquired bistability are more suitable for applications.
