Activation of the focal adhesion kinase (FAK) in podocytes is involved in the pathogenesis of minimal change disease (MCD), but the pathway leading to its activation in this disease is unknown. Here, we tested whether podocyte β1 integrin is the upstream modulator of FAK activation and podocyte injury in experimental models of MCD-like injury.

Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) systems require bypass diodes to protect PV modules from operating at negative voltages, thus avoiding the degradation of a PV array under partial-shading conditions. However, the presence of bypass diodes produces changes in the power production of the PV array; thus, an accurate bypass diode model is essential to estimate the power production of the PV array, which is required to analyze the viability of a PV installation. Therefore, this paper proposes a modified model for the bypass diodes present in commercial PV arrays; such a proposed model is based on the Schottky equation, including a series resistance. This paper also proposes a non-invasive and non-destructive method for estimating the model parameters, which avoids the requirement of opening the module junction box; thus, it applies to commercial PV arrays. Simulation and experimental results confirm the improved accuracy of the proposed solution over the classical bypass diode model usually adopted for estimating the power production of PV arrays. Abstract

Lippia albais a plant widely studied due to both chemical diversity and bioactivities related to its ethnobotanical uses. In this work, the composition of the volatile secondary metabolites (volatile fractions/essential oil, EO) of the flower/leaves of L. alba(from northern region of Colombia) was determined by solid phase micro-extraction/distillation-solvent extraction/microwave-hydrodistillation/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (MWHD/GC-MS), along with some in vitrobiological properties (cytotoxicity and acetylcholinesterase enzyme [AChe] inhibition) from leaf EO. Outstanding results were found: (i) cis-piperitone oxide (~13%-46%), germacrene D (~11%-30%), and limonene (~10%-22%) characterized the volatile secondary metabolites from different parts of the plant; (ii) leaf EO showed a moderate hemolytic activity (HC50: 580 ± 1 µg/mL), a significant cytotoxicity on lymphocytes (LC50: 127 ± 3 µg/mL), a high cytotoxicity on HEp2 cell line (LC50: 38 ± 2 µg/mL), and a moderate inhibitory effect on AChE (IC50: 28 ± 2 µg/mL). Based on these results, a new chemovar of L. albais reported (represented by cis-piperitone oxide) along with its promising cytotoxic and AChE inhibiting properties.
