We examined the 12-month maintenance effects of a previously successful integrated model of diabetes care at improving glycemic management and psychological well-being among Latino adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). A randomized controlled trial (2015–19) compared an integrated care intervention (ICI) with usual care among 456 adults with T2D. The ICI included integrated medical and behavioral care and health education over 6 months. Assessments were completed at baseline, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Most participants were female (63.7%) with a mean age of 55.7 years. In multilevel models, significant Group × Time (quadratic) interaction effects were found for HbA1c [Bint= 0.10, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.02, 0.17, P< .01] and anxiety symptoms (Bint= 0.20, 95% CI 0.05, 0.35, P< .009), but not depression symptoms (Bint= 0.15, 95% CI −0.01, 0.31, P< .07). Analyses of instantaneous rate of change in the ICI group showed significant decreases at 3 and 6 months for both HbAc1 (B= −0.31 at 3 months; B= −0.12 at 6 months) and anxiety symptoms (B= −0.92 at 3 months; B= −0.46 at 6 months), and no significant instantaneous changes at 9 or 12 months, suggesting that initial improvements were largely maintained. The usual care group showed a small decrease in anxiety symptoms at 6 months (B= −0.17), but no other significant changes at any time-point for anxiety or HbA1c (all Ps > .05). This culturally tailored integrated care model shows potential in producing and sustaining positive effects on clinical and psychological outcomes above standard care.A culturally tailored, integrated care intervention produced improvements in glycemic management and decreases in depression and anxiety symptoms, and these improvements were maintained up to 6 months after its conclusion.Our previous studies found that a culturally adapted, enhanced service (integrated care intervention) that we developed improved glycemic management and decreased depression and anxiety symptoms over the 6 months that the service was offered. In this study, we found that the improvements in glycemic management and in anxiety and depression symptoms previously shown were largely maintained. Objectives: Due to the high rates of overweight and obesity in Mexican and Puerto Rican women, interventions that target these groups are in great need. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to explore the role of four cultural variables (acculturation, acculturative stress, ethnic identity, and cultural values) that may help to explain ethnic disparities in correlates of obesity (diet, physical activity, and body image) among Mexican and Puerto Rican women. This paper describes the study design, measures, and initial analyses of participant characteristics, as well as implications for the development of an obesity intervention. Methods: A total of 552 participants contacted the study staff, with 368 completing the oral script and initial eligibility interview. From these, 227 completed the written consent, 199 completed the “Health and Culture” interview, and 186 completed all study components; 42 women completed the qualitative interview. Data for the current study is from the 199 participants who completed the “Health and Culture” interview. Results: Mexican women were younger, more likely to have completed less than a 9th grade education, and more likely to prefer to complete the interview in Spanish (vs. English) compared to Puerto Rican women. In addition, Mexican women were more likely to be in the normal-weight group, be a non-smoker, and not have health insurance compared to Puerto Rican women. Conclusion: Results revealed key initial differences between Puerto Rican and Mexican women which should be considered when developing interventions that address overweight and obesity.

The sea cucumber Isostichopus badionotushas been overfished along its Mexican distribution, but no abundance recovery has been observed despite management efforts. Restocking and sea ranching strategies can use releasing individuals, and magnitude of protected areas be related on species dispersion knowledge. We measured the short-term movement paths on I. badionotusand their relation with environmental variables. In addition, the influence of biofilm presence/absence on artificial shelters surfaces and the use for animals were compared. Data was obtained through time-lapse cameras in experiments performed in outer aquaria under the natural fluctuation of temperature and sunlight. We observed that larger (Le) individuals exhibited greater daily movement distances (D) (D=0.89*Le−2.533 cm); furthermore, the sea cucumbers move faster in bare aquaria than aquaria with sand. The mean daily movement without sand was 518 cm for small sizes, 615 cm for medium, and 688 cm for large sizes. In the presence of sand, was 127, 196, and 315 cm, respectively. Movement was minimal in the morning/early afternoon (07:00–15:00), a maximum in the afternoon/evening (15:00–23:00), and an intermediate at night/early morning (23:00–07:00). The movement of the small sea cucumbers (>5.96−10.75 cm), was linked to light. Medium-sized and large sea cucumbers (>10.6−19.69 cm) respond to changes in temperature. We observed a higher rate of shelter use by small sea cucumbers (53 % of the day) and a greater affinity for pre-conditioned shelters (80 % of shelter use). Medium-sized and large animals did not show any shelter preferences. Results indicate low dispersion of I. badionotuson daily timescale. The affinity found in small animals towards shelters with biofilm, and their use only in this size class, makes them essential for survival in restoration strategies.

A 34-year-old Hispanic man with HIV infection on no treatment (CD4 20/μL, viral load 1.9/106copies/mL) presented with 4 months of dizziness, ataxia, and scanning speech consistent with a pancerebellar syndrome. MRI scan (Figure) demonstrated marked cerebellar atrophy. CSF showed normal cell count, protein, and glucose levels, nonreactive venereal disease research laboratory test. CSF PCR was negative for cytomegalovirus, varicella-zoster, herpes simplex type 1 and 2, Epstein-Barr, and herpes virus 6, but positive for John Cunningham (JC) virus. JC virus granule cell neuronopathy (GCN) was diagnosed. JC virus variants may rarely infect cerebellar granule neurons instead of oligodendrocytes as seen in classic progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy with white matter involvement.1,2HAART (zidovudine, lamivudine, and efavirenz) commenced immediately, with slight symptomatic improvement at 12 months, MRI scan was unchanged. Clinicians should suspect JC virus strain infection producing GCN in AIDS patients with symptomatic cerebellar atrophy2and commence HAART promptly—immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome is not usually a concern in cases of isolated JC virus GCN.

The effect of two temperatures (14°C and 18°C) and incubation systems (artificial versus female care) on the embryonic development of Octopus vulgaris was studied. Octopuses (six females and two males) were captured in the Ria of Vigo (Northwest Spain). Egg batches were divided into two groups: one left with female care, and others were incubated with artificial aeration. The results indicate that the type of incubation did not affect the embryonic development, whereas temperature had a marked effect on it. The duration of embryonic development was 40 days at 18°C and 67 days at 14°C. Results suggest that a reduction of around 24 days °C–1 can be obtained when O. vulgaris embryos are incubated into the temperature tolerance range of this species. Results showed that temperature modulated in a different form the embryonic development, at least until stage XIII, where embryos at 18°C showed lower values of eggs and embryo length than embryos at 14°C. The proportion of arm/total length was 21% higher in embryos at 14°C compared with 18°C, suggesting that in the first phases of embryo development, muscle development is favored at low temperature. Results showed that embryos at 14°C and 18°C had no differences in two critical processes, that is, nervous system synthesis (measured through eye synthesis) and organogenesis (measured through mantle length). The fact that there were no differences between hatchlings developing from embryos at both experimental temperatures demonstrates that O. vulgaris embryos can be favored if spawn occurs at relatively low temperatures. Abstract.Background:Social networking about depression can be indicative of self-reported depression and/or can normalize risk behaviors such as self-harm and suicidal ideation. Aim:To gain a better understanding of the depression, self-harm, and suicidal content that is being shared on Tumblr. Method:From April 16 to May 10, 2014, 17 popular depression-related Tumblr accounts were monitored for new posts and engagement with other Tumblr users. A total of 3,360 posts were randomly selected from all historical posts from these accounts and coded based on themes ascertained by the research team. Results:The 17 Tumblr accounts posted a median number of 185 posts (range = 0–2,954). Content was engaged with (i.e., re-blogged or liked) a median number of 1,677,362 times (range = 0–122,186,504). Of the 3,360 randomly selected posts, 2,739 (82%) were related to depression, suicide, or self-harm. Common themes were self-loathing (412, 15%), loneliness/feeling unloved (405, 15%), self-harm (407, 15%), and suicide (372, 14%). Conclusion:This study takes an important first step at better understanding the displayed depression-related references on Tumblr. The findings signal a need for suicide prevention efforts to intervene on Tumblr and use this platform in a strategic way, given the depression and suicidal content that was readily observed on Tumblr.

The preferred temperature of Tegula regina was determined in a horizontal thermal gradient with organisms acclimated to 16°C, 19°C, and 22°C using to acute method, with a preferred temperature of 19.7 ± 1.8°C for the day cycle and 18.8 ± 1.2°C for the night cycle. The final preferred temperature determined for marine snails was 19.2 ± 1.5°C. The displacement velocity decreased to an interval from 99.1 cm/h to 62.5 cm/h. During the third hour, when organisms detected the preferred temperature, the velocity diminished gradually from 25.8 cm/h to 7.5 cm/h. Critical temperature maxima (CTMax), which refers to the temperature at which at least 50% of the experimental group displays a loss of attachment, was measured at three acclimation temperatures (16°C, 19°C, and 22°C). At the acclimation temperature (16°C), 50% of the experimental group had an attachment loss at a CTMax of 29.3°C. At a warmer acclimation temperature (22°C), the observed CTMax was 31.2°C. Marine snail oxygen consumption rate increased significantly (P < 0.05, 31%) from 16°C to 22°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of Patagonian octopus fed with moist diets formulated with several local feed ingredients. All formulated diets were based on crab paste (70%) and the experimental feed ingredient (30%). Experiment I assayed salmon meal, prime sardine meal, and wheat gluten, using fresh fish as a control; experiment 2 assayed prime fish meal and macroalgal meal against crab paste alone as a control. The ingestion rate was lower than expected for all diets except those of fresh fish, crab paste alone, and crab paste plus prime sardine meal. No significant differences were found in the observed digestibility of the diets, indicating, in general, low digestibility, even for fresh fish. The highest protease values were observed for crab paste plus prime sardine meal in both experiments. The better growth of Enteroctopus. megalocyathus was obtained when these were fed fresh fish, which was associated with the greater consumption observed in this diet, as neither the digestibility nor the enzymatic activities of the hepatopancrcas were related to this greater growth. The effect of electrical stimulation on the quality of P. setiferus sperm cells was studied during the regeneration of the spermatophore. The proportion of the animals that responded to electroejaculation was quantified and the number of live, abnormal and dead cells, as well as the relationship between the number of cells and body weight, were taken into consideration as indicators of the effect of manipulation during stimulation. It was found that electrical stimulation caused some degree of spermatophore expulsion in 78% of the cases. Total expulsion of the spermatophores occurred in only 8.3% of the cases. A logistic curve was adjusted to the relationship between the number of sperm cells and the weight of the shrimp. After regeneration no curve was adjusted to the relationship. Eighty per cent of the stimulated shrimp regenerated the spermatophore in a maximum of 168 h. Fifty per cent regeneration was obtained in 96 h after stimulation. A decrease in the number of live cells from 26.8 to 7.6 million and an increase in abnormal (from 0.02 to 3.92 million) and dead (from no cells dead to 4.6 million) respectively, were registered for regenerated animals. Necrotic areas in 60% of the ampulae of regenerated shrimps were also observed. Bacteria associated with the necrotic ampulae was observed when counting sperm. As the spermatophore of this species is complex, it is necessary to search for a way to reduce the stress produced by the handling of the ampulae so as to avoid altering the reproductive capacity of the shrimp.

Taking into account that the relationship between metabolic substrate and the characteristics of the diet is essential for understanding the mechanisms associated with the use of the components of a certain food substance, the aim of this study was to examine the metabolic substrate used by Penaeus setiferus,P. schmitti, P. duorurum and P. notialis postlarvae PL 35–40 (35–40 days after metamorphosis) fed purified diets with different levels of proteins (40, 50, 60 and 65%). Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion were measured in animals in intermoult which had been acclimatized to each diet over a minimum of 5 days. Measurements were taken on fasted (24 h) and fed animals. Oxygen consumption of fasting animals increased with a rise in the proteins of the diet in the four species. In the fed animals, this tendency was observed in P. setiferus and P. notialis, while in P. schmitti and P. duorarum oxygen consumption was a weak relationship, decreasing or increasing with a diet with 50% protein. Both in fasting and feeding animals, the ammonia excretion increased with the increase in proteins in the diet. The O : N atomic ratios of the four species decreased (between 30 and 3), according to increase in dietetic protein : energy ratio, (10.4 to 17.0 mg protein/kcal). The highest value of O : N ratio was observed in P. setiferus (40% of protein requirement, O : N = 24 to 34) and lowest in P. schmitti (60% of protein requirement, O : N = 4 to 11), with intermediate values in P. duorarumand P. notialis (50% protein requirement, O : N = 8 to 14 and 13 to 19, respectively). These results support previous research that showed that the omnivorous-herbivorous species, like P. setiferus, use protein-lipids normally as energy source in contrast to omnivorous-carnivorous species such as P. duorarum which use protein preferentially as a source of energy.
