Abstract

ObjectivePancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has limited therapeutic options, particularly with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Highly chemoresistant ‘stem-like’ cells, known as cancer stem cells (CSCs), are implicated in PDAC aggressiveness. Thus, comprehending how this subset of cells evades the immune system is crucial for advancing novel therapies.DesignWe used the KPC mouse model (LSL-KrasG12D/+; LSL-Trp53R172H/+; Pdx-1-Cre) and primary tumour cell lines to investigate putative CSC populations. Transcriptomic analyses were conducted to pinpoint new genes involved in immune evasion. Overexpressing and knockout cell lines were established with lentiviral vectors. Subsequent in vitrococulture assays, in vivomouse and zebrafish tumorigenesis studies, and in silicodatabase approaches were performed.ResultsUsing the KPC mouse model, we functionally confirmed a population of cells marked by EpCAM, Sca-1 and CD133 as authentic CSCs and investigated their transcriptional profile. Immune evasion signatures/genes, notably the gene peptidoglycan recognition protein 1 (PGLYRP1), were significantly overexpressed in these CSCs. Modulating PGLYRP1 impacted CSC immune evasion, affecting their resistance to macrophage-mediated and T-cell-mediated killing and their tumourigenesis in immunocompetent mice. Mechanistically, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα)-regulated PGLYRP1 expression interferes with the immune tumour microenvironment (TME) landscape, promoting myeloid cell-derived immunosuppression and activated T-cell death. Importantly, these findings were not only replicated in human models, but clinically, secreted PGLYRP1 levels were significantly elevated in patients with PDAC.ConclusionsThis study establishes PGLYRP1 as a novel CSC-associated marker crucial for immune evasion, particularly against macrophage phagocytosis and T-cell killing, presenting it as a promising target for PDAC immunotherapy.

2. Improved Quality of Life After Mandibular Advancement by Bilateral Internal Ramus Distraction.

Abstract

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a significant health issue due to noncompliance with continuous positive airway pressure treatment. Therefore, evaluating alternative treatments is crucial. Analyze the impact of maxillomandibular advancement using bilateral internal ramus distraction (BIRD) on quality of life (QOL) in OSA patients. A prospective cohort study was conducted at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the University Hospital "La Princesa." The study included patients with moderate to severe OSA who were treated with the BIRD approach. Changes in measured variables were analyzed at three time points: before surgery (T1), after mandibular advancement (T2), and after maxillary advancement (T3). QOL changes measured by Quebec Sleep Questionnaire and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Secondary outcomes included: apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), oxygen desaturation index, and percentage of time with saturation below 90%. Age, sex, continuous positive airway pressure treatment, cephalometric variables and cardiovascular risk parameters were considered. Statistical analysis employed the Friedman test and χ2 test, with a significance level of P ≤.05. The study included 32 patients (22% with moderate OSA, 78% with severe OSA). Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores significantly decreased between T1 (13.4 ± 4.4) and T2 (5.8 ± 3.6) and T3 (1.9 ± 1.8) (P <.001). QOL improvements were observed in all domains: daytime sleepiness T1 (3.0 ± 1.3) T2 (5.4 ± 1.4) T3 (6.3 ± 1.0); diurnal symptoms T1 (2.5 ± 1.4) T2 (5.2 ± 1.3) T3 (6.2 ± 1.1); nocturnal symptoms T1 (2.5 ± 1.1) T2 (5.6 ± 1.1) T3 (6.5 ± 0.8); emotions T1 (2.6 ± 1.6) T2 (5.3 ± 1.4) T3 (6.5 ± 0.9); and social interaction T1 (2.5 ± 1.6) T2 (5.4 ± 1.6) T3 (6.3 ± 1.2) (P <.001). AHI decreased between T1 (47.9 ± 23.1) and T2 (14.4 ± 14.3) and T3 (4.7 ± 5.6) h−1 (P <.001), with a final cure rate of 81.2% (defined as final AHI<5 h−1). Oxygen desaturation index and percentage of time with saturation below 90% also showed significant reductions (P <.001). BIRD approach for OSA demonstrated a high cure rate and significant QOL improvements. It shows promise as an effective surgical option. Further research and long-term follow-up are needed. 4. A methodology to assess and select seismic fragility curves: Application to the case of Costa Rica

Abstract

Different seismic risk studies have been carried out in the Central American region to quantify the human and economic losses caused by seismic events. The appropriate use of seismic fragility curves (FCs) allows a better approximation of the level of performance of a structural system in the face of seismic hazards. In this respect, an inadequate selection of FCs can lead to a notably unreliable estimation of damages and losses. This research contributes a methodology for assessing and selecting FCs for seismic risk studies from a catalog of existing proposals available in the literature. The methodology has been applied to the case study of Costa Rica, encompassing a bibliographic search, meetings with Central American experts, and the compilation of a catalog with the FCs used in different vulnerability projects. The conclusion drawn is that FCs with very different probabilities of damage are being used in the diverse vulnerability projects for buildings with the same attributes. Moreover, the proposed methodology allows knowing the reliability level of the FCs obtained depending on which class the curve was classified into based on its score. Therefore, it allows the adequacy and uncertainty related to the selected FCs to be established, a subject that researchers should consider in seismic vulnerability and risk studies.

5. Prognostic Involvement of Lymph Node Density in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma. A New Predictive Model.

Abstract

Lymph node density (LND) has been reported to be a significant predictor of survival in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The aim of this study was to analyze LND as a prognostic factor in OSCC and create a predictive model that determines the probability of death in these patients. A retrospective cohort study was carried out with a cohort of patients who underwent cervical dissection and primary resection of OSCC between 1980 and 2020. The primary predictor variable in this study was LND, which is defined as the number of positive lymph nodes divided by the total number of lymph nodes removed. The cutoff values for prediction of disease-specific survival (DSS) were calculated by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, which determined the best cutoff value was 0.07. Patients were divided into binary subgroups (low and high risk) using the best cutoff value of LND. The outcome variable was DSS, defined as the duration from the date of diagnosis to death due to OSCC and not due to other causes or secondary tumors. Other variables were type of neck dissection, postsurgical treatment, surgical margin, pathological T category stage, pathological N category (pN) stage, extranodal extension, perineural invasion, bone invasion, and presence of recurrence. A predictive model (score) was generated by selecting variables using a log-rank test and by using the Cox proportional-hazards regression (multivariate analysis). The sample consisted of 368 patients, 252 (68.5%) male and 116 (31.5%) female patients, with a mean age of 60.3 years. According to the LND cutoff value, there were 289 patients with a low LND (≤0.07) and 79 with a high LND (>0.07). The univariate analysis showed LND as a significant predictor of DSS at 5 years (67.1% in LND ≤ 0.07 vs 32.9% in LND > 0.07; P <.001). The Cox multivariate analysis identified LND (hazard ratio [HR] = 27.2; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.18-231; P =.002), recurrence (HR = 4.45; 95% CI, 2.3-8.4; P <.001), and type of treatment (HR = 0.52; 95% CI, 0.34-0.81; P <.001) as independent predictive factors for DSS. In the predictive model, the presence of recurrence was the most important factor with 8 points, whereas LND >0.07 contributed only 1 point; however, the 2 categories resulting from this limit were statistically significant. Our study demonstrates that LND is an additional prognostic factor in patients with a pN+ disease. In addition, our predictive model could be useful in the therapeutic algorithm of OSCC patients, as it can predict the probability of death in these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. Mitochondrial RNA methyltransferase TRMT61B is a new, potential biomarker and therapeutic target for highly aneuploid cancers

Abstract

Despite being frequently observed in cancer cells, chromosomal instability (CIN) and its immediate consequence, aneuploidy, trigger adverse effects on cellular homeostasis that need to be overcome by anti-stress mechanisms. As such, these safeguard responses represent a tumor-specific Achilles heel, since CIN and aneuploidy are rarely observed in normal cells. Recent data have revealed that epitranscriptomic marks catalyzed by RNA-modifying enzymes change under various stress insults. However, whether aneuploidy is associated with such RNA modifying pathways remains to be determined. Through an in silico search for aneuploidy biomarkers in cancer cells, we found TRMT61B, a mitochondrial RNA methyltransferase enzyme, to be associated with high levels of aneuploidy. Accordingly, TRMT61B protein levels are increased in tumor cell lines with an imbalanced karyotype as well as in different tumor types when compared to control tissues. Interestingly, while TRMT61B depletion induces senescence in melanoma cell lines with low levels of aneuploidy, it leads to apoptosis in cells with high levels. The therapeutic potential of these results was further validated by targeting TRMT61B in transwell and xenografts assays. We show that TRM61B depletion reduces the expression of several mitochondrial encoded proteins and limits mitochondrial function. Taken together, these results identify a new biomarker of aneuploidy in cancer cells that could potentially be used to selectively target highly aneuploid tumors.

12. SIRGAS reference frame analysis at DGFI–TUM

Abstract

The Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut (DGFI) has been involved in the research activities of the Latin American Reference Frame SIRGAS since its establishment in 1993. DGFI coordinated the SIRGAS Global Positioning System campaigns of 1995 and 2000 and acted as an analysis centre of both campaigns contributing to the first two SIRGAS realisations known as SIRGAS95 and SIRGAS2000. In 1996, DGFI established the Regional Network Associate Analysis Centre for SIRGAS of the International GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Service (IGS RNAAC SIRGAS) and took on responsibility for processing the SIRGAS continuously operating stations and generating weekly position solutions. Later followed the determination of cumulative (multi-year) solutions, consisting of station positions and constant velocities, providing accurate solutions for the SIRGAS reference frame. DGFI was integrated into the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in 2015, becoming DGFI–TUM, and based on the SIRGAS operational analyses, it continues investigating strategies to guarantee the reliability of the reference frame through time. This includes the estimation of the reference frame kinematics, evaluation, modelling, and reduction of seismic and post-seismic deformations on the reference frame, and modelling crustal kinematics in the SIRGAS region by continuous velocity models. This article summarises analysis strategies and science data products developed by DGFI–TUM as a SIRGAS analysis centre and as the IGS RNAAC SIRGAS. Special care is given to the determination of the most recent SIRGAS reference frame solution called SIRGAS2022, which is based on the second SIRGAS reprocessing campaign performed by DGFI–TUM to obtain homogeneously computed SIRGAS daily and weekly station position solutions referring to the IGS reference frame IGS14/IGb14 since January 2000.

15. MANNosylation of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles Modifies TLR4 Localization and NF‐κB Translocation in T24 Bladder Cancer Cells

Abstract

D‐mannose is widely used as non‐antibiotic treatment for bacterial urinary tract infections. This application is based on a well‐studied mechanism of binding to the type 1 bacterial pili and, therefore, blocking bacteria adhesion to the uroepithelial cells. To implement D‐mannose into carrier systems, the mechanism of action of the sugar in the bladder environment is also relevant and requires investigation. Herein, two different MANNosylation strategies using mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are described. The impact of different chemical linkers on bacterial adhesion and bladder cell response is studied via confocal microscopy imaging of the MSN interactions with the respective organisms. Cytotoxicity is assessed and the expression of Toll‐like receptor 4 (TLR4) and caveolin‐1 (CAV‐1), in the presence or absence of simulated infection with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), is evaluated using the human urinary bladder cancer cell line T24. Further, localisation of the transcription factor NF‐κB due to the MANNosylated materials is examined over time. The results show that MANNosylation modifies bacterial adhesion to the nanomaterials and significantly affects TLR4, caveolin‐1, and NF‐κB in bladder cells. These elements are essential components of the inflammatory cascade/pathogens response during urinary tract infections. These findings demonstrate that MANNosylation is a versatile tool to design hybrid nanocarriers for targeted biomedical applications. Upon MANNosylation of dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs), stimulation of TLR4 can be observed in T24 bladder cancer cells. DMSN‐phenyl‐mannose materials returned patterns resembling receptor‐mediated internalization via endocytosis. Treatment with DMSN‐NCO‐mannose results in evenly distributed signals. Incubation of these materials with fimbriated and non‐fimbriated bacteria shows only selective adhesion of DMSN‐NCO‐mannose with fimbriated bacteria, and no selective adhesion for DMSN‐phenyl‐mannose.

16. Lung transplantation from controlled donation after circulatory death using simultaneous abdominal normothermic regional perfusion: A single center experience

Despite the benefits of abdominal normothermic regional perfusion (A-NRP) for abdominal grafts in controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD), there is limited information on the effect of A-NRP on the quality of the cDCD lungs. We aimed to study the effect of A-NRP in lungs obtained from cDCD and its impact on recipients´ outcomes. This is a study comparing outcomes of lung transplants (LT) from cDCD donors (September 2014 to December 2021) obtained using A-NRP as the abdominal preservation method. As controls, all lung recipients transplanted from donors after brain death (DBD) were considered. The primary outcomes were lung recipient 3-month, 1-year, and 5-year survival. A total of 269 LT were performed (60 cDCD and 209 DBD). There was no difference in survival at 3 months (98.3% cDCD vs. 93.7% DBD), 1 year (90.9% vs. 87.2%), and 5 years (68.7% vs. 69%). LT from the cDCD group had a higher rate of primary graft dysfunction grade 3 at 72 h (10% vs. 3.4%; p <.001). This is the largest experience ever reported with the use of A-NRP combined with lung retrieval in cDCD donors. This combined method is safe for lung grafts presenting short-term survival outcomes equivalent to those transplanted through DBD.

19. High-resolution regional gravity field modeling in data-challenging regions for the realization of geopotential-based height systems

Abstract

Abstract: Modern height systems are based on the combination of satellite positioning and gravity field models of high resolution. However, in many regions, especially developing or newly industrializing countries, there is no (reliable) regional gravity model at all, due to challenges such as limited data availability, unknown/low data quality, and missing metadata. This paper addresses this issue in a case study of Colombia, where eight decades of historical terrestrial and airborne gravity measurements are available but widely contain systematic errors, outliers, and biases. Correspondingly, processing strategies and structures are proposed and applied to validate and improve the quality of old gravity datasets. A novel method is developed based on spherical radial basis functions (SRBFs) for estimating biases, which are found in different airborne surveys with values exceeding 40 mGal. The validity of this bias estimation method is demonstrated both by a simulation test and by the evaluation of the airborne data in comparison to the SATOP (SAtellite-TOPography) model, which merges the satellite-only global gravity model GOCO06s with the Earth2014 topography model. The terrestrial and airborne data are then combined with a global gravity model (GGM), ultra-high-resolution topography models, as well as altimetry-derived gravity anomalies from DTU21GRA for the offshore areas. The results are presented in terms of height anomalies (QGeoidCOL2023), and they are thoroughly validated using GPS/leveling data both in the absolute and relative manner. The standard deviation in comparison to the GPS/leveling data after applying a correction surface to account for the datum inconsistencies amounts to 15.76 cm, which is 27% smaller compared to the mean standard deviation value given by five recent high-resolution GGMs, and 36% smaller than the one delivered by the latest South American quasi-geoid model QGEOID2021. The relative validation results show that QGeoidCOL2023 performs better, i.e., delivers lower RMS errors than the GGMs and QGEOID2021 in all the baseline length groups. These results indicate the validity and benefits of the developed methods and procedures, which can be used for other data-challenging areas to facilitate the realization of geopotential-based height systems. 21. Visualization Technologies for Learning and Teaching Veterinary Acarology and Entomology

Abstract

Educational technologies are tools and resources used for improving teaching, learning, and creative inquiry. Visualization technologies (VTs) fall within this category and comprise a high diversity of strategies from simple infographics to complex forms of visual data analysis. Traditionally, parasitology has been a challenging subject in medical and veterinary degree courses due to the high number of scientific names, morphological characters, and complex life cycles, among other factors. This has been reinforced by conventional teaching methods with limited innovation strategies. Here we present the design and evaluation of an interactive album of veterinary acarology and entomology, “Álbum Interactivo de Acarología y Entomología Veterinaria” (AIAEV). This tool was assessed through three strategies: (1) a mean grade comparison between veterinary parasitology classes before and after VT implementation, (2) a system usability scale (SUS), and (3) a student/user satisfaction index. The grade value was higher in the class after implementation, the SUS total score was 80.05 (excellent), and 93.75% considered it a useful tool. This is the first study aimed at investigating the use of VTs to teach veterinary acarology and entomology and shows promising results to develop and implement digital technologies in this and other veterinary curricula disciplines.

31. 4-Hydroxybenzoic Acid Rescues the Multisystemic Disease and Perinatal Lethality in a Mouse Model of Mitochondrial Disease

Abstract

Coenzyme Q (CoQ) deficiency syndrome is conventionally treated with limited efficacy using exogenous CoQ10. Poor outcome results from low absorption and bioavailability of CoQ10, and clinical heterogenicity of the disease. Here, we demonstrate that supplementation with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4HB), the precursor of the benzoquinone ring in the CoQ biosynthetic pathway, completely rescues the multisystemic disease and perinatal lethality in a mouse model of CoQ deficiency. 4HB stimulates endogenous CoQ biosynthesis in tissues of Coq2mutant mice, normalizing mitochondrial function and rescuing cardiac insufficiency, edema, and neurodevelopmental delay. In contrast, exogenous CoQ10supplementation falls short in fully restoring the phenotype. The treatment is translatable to human use, as proven by in vitrostudies in skin fibroblasts from patients with pathogenic variants in COQ2. The therapeutic approach extends to other disorders characterized by deficiencies in the production of 4HB, early steps of CoQ biosynthesis, and instances of secondary CoQ deficiency.

34. Nitric oxide-targeted therapy inhibits stemness and increases the efficacy of tamoxifen in estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells

Abstract

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are involved in the resistance of estrogen (ER)-positive breast tumors against endocrine therapy. On the other hand, nitric oxide (NO) plays a relevant role in CSC biology, although there are no studies addressing how this important signaling molecule may contribute to resistance to antihormonal therapy in ER+breast cancer. Therefore, we explored whether targeting NO in ER+breast cancer cells impacts CSC subpopulation and sensitivity to hormonal therapy with tamoxifen. NO was targeted in ER+breast cancer cells by specific NO depletion and NOS2 silencing and mammosphere formation capacity, stem cell markers and tamoxifen sensitivity were analyzed. An orthotopic breast tumor model in mice was also performed to analyze the efficacy of NO-targeted therapy plus tamoxifen. Kaplan–Meier curves were made to analyze the association of NOS2 gene expression with survival of ER+breast cancer patients treated with tamoxifen. Our results show that targeting NO inhibited mamosphere formation, CSC markers expression and increased the antitumoral efficacy of tamoxifen in ER+breast cancer cells, whereas tamoxifen-resistant cells displayed higher expression levels of NOS2 and Notch-1 compared with parental cells. Notably, NO-targeted therapy plus tamoxifen was more effective than either treatment alone in an orthotopic breast tumor model in immunodeficient mice. Furthermore, low NOS2 expression was significantly associated with a higher metastasis-free survival in ER+breast cancer patients treated with tamoxifen. In conclusion, our data support that NO-targeted therapy in ER+breast cancer may contribute to increase the efficacy of antihormonal therapy avoiding the development of resistance to these treatments.

35. Transthyretin amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy after domino liver transplantation: Results of a cross‐sectional study

Abstract

Domino liver transplantation (DLT) has been used widely in patients with hereditary amyloid transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis. New‐onset polyneuropathy in recipients of DLT has been reported, but there are few cases of cardiac involvement reported. We aimed to perform a cross‐sectional study for ATTR amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy (ATTR‐CM) in DLT recipients. We evaluated 23 living DLT recipients a median of 9 years since DLT at 2 referral centers with a systematic cardiac evaluation, including bone scintigraphy. Median age was 72 years, 91% had hypertension, 35% had diabetes mellitus, 67% had chronic renal failure, and 8 patients (35%) developed new‐onset polyneuropathy. Only 13% had a normal electrocardiogram and a normal echocardiography, and most of them showed some conduction disturbance or increase in left ventricular wall thickness, but only 1 patient with a Glu89Lys mutation developed ATTR‐CM diagnosed by bone scintigraphy and endomyocardial biopsy. None of the recipients of a DLT with Val30Met mutation showed cardiac involvement by bone scintigraphy. In conclusion, DLT from Val30Met donors seems to be safe regarding the development of ATTR‐CM. Evaluation of cardiomyopathy in DLT recipients is challenging due to concomitant comorbidities and in this context, bone scintigraphy can be helpful to evaluate ATTR‐CM. Liver donors with non‐Val30Met mutations and cardiomyopathy may pose increased risk for domino liver recipients to develop cardiomyopathy from transthyretin amyloidosis after transplantation.

43. A novel de novo MTORgain-of-function variant in a patient with Smith-Kingsmore syndrome and Antiphospholipid syndrome

Abstract

We report the clinical, biochemical and genetic findings from a Spanish girl of Caucasian origin who presented with macrocephaly, dysmorphic facial features, developmental delay, hypotonia, combined oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) deficiency, epilepsy and anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPL). Whole-exome sequencing (WES) uncovered a heterozygous variant in the MTORgene (NM_004958.3: c.7235A>T: p.(Asp2412Val)) that encodes for the Serine/threonine-protein kinase mTOR. The substrates phosphorylation experiments demonstrated that this variant exerts its effect by gain-of-function (GOF) and autosomal dominant mechanism. GOF variants in this protein have been associated with Smith-Kingsmore syndrome (SKS), a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by intellectual disability, macrocephaly, seizure, developmental delay and dysmorphic facial features. Furthermore, the mTOR pathway has been demonstrated previously to be involved in many types of endothelium injuries including the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by the production of aPL with recurrent vascular thrombosis. Therefore, our patient is the first one with an mTOR variant and diagnosed with SKS and APS. In conclusion, our data expand both the genetic and phenotypic spectrum associated with MTORgene variants.

44. Downregulation of specific FBXW7 isoforms with differential effects in T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma

Abstract

FBXW7is a driver gene in T-cell lymphoblastic neoplasia acting through proteasome degradation of key proto-oncogenes. FBXW7 encodes three isoforms, α, β and γ, which differ only in the N-terminus. In this work, massive sequencing revealed significant downregulation of FBXW7in a panel of primary T-cell lymphoblastic lymphomas characterised by the absence of mutations in its sequence. We observed that decreased expression mainly affected the FBXW7βisoform and to a lesser extent FBXW7αand may be attributed to the combined effect of epigenetic changes, alteration of upstream factors and upregulation of miRNAs. Transient transfections with miRNA mimics in selected cell lines resulted in a significant decrease of total FBXW7expression and its different isoforms separately, with the consequent increment of critical substrates and the stimulation of cell proliferation. Transient inhibition of endogenous miRNAs in a T-cell lymphoblastic-derived cell line (SUP-T1) was capable of reversing these proliferative effects. Finally, we show how FBXW7 isoforms display different roles within the cell. Simultaneous downregulation of the α and γ isoforms modulates the amount of CCNE1, whilst the β-isoform alone was found to have a prominent role in modulating the amount of c-MYC. Our data also revealed that downregulation of all isoforms is a sine qua noncondition to induce a proliferative pattern in our cell model system. Taking these data into account, potential new treatments to reverse downregulation of all or a specific FBXW7isoform may be an effective strategy to counteract the proliferative capacity of these tumour cells.

45. Gene selection and disease prediction from gene expression data using a two-stage hetero-associative memory

Abstract

In general, gene expression microarrays consist of a vast number of genes and very few samples, which represents a critical challenge for disease prediction and diagnosis. This paper develops a two-stage algorithm that integrates feature selection and prediction by extending a type of hetero-associative neural networks. In the first level, the algorithm generates the associative memory, whereas the second level picks the most relevant genes. With the purpose of illustrating the applicability and efficiency of the method proposed here, we use four different gene expression microarray databases and compare their classification performance against that of other renowned classifiers built on the whole (original) feature (gene) space. The experimental results show that the two-stage hetero-associative memory is quite competitive with standard classification models regarding the overall accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. In addition, it also produces a significant decrease in computational efforts and an increase in the biological interpretability of microarrays because worthless (irrelevant and/or redundant) genes are discarded.
