Recent advances in the synthesis of stable organic (open-shell) polyradicaloids have opened their application as active compounds for emerging technologies. These systems typically exhibit small energy differences between states with different spin multiplicities, which are intrinsically difficult to calculate by theoretical methods. We thus apply here some DFT-based variants (FT-DFT, SF-DFT, and SF-TDDFT) on a test set of large and real-world molecules, as test systems for which such energy differences are experimentally available, also comparing systematically with RAS-SF results to infer if shortcomings of previous DFT applications are corrected. Additionally, we explore the spin–spin contribution to the ZFS tensor, of high interest for EPR spectroscopy, and derive the spatial extent of the corresponding (photoexcited) triplet state.

Summary The correlation energy of two- and four-isoelectronic series, a representative example for which the existing spin-density functionals fails, is calculated using the Colle and Salvetti method, considering mono- and multideterminantal wave functions. The results are in agreement with experimental data, and show the potentiality of this method when it is applied to wave functions including the most relevant configurational features. Also, results for the ionization energies and electron affinities of first- and second-row atoms are reported.

Unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations with large basis sets, including d-functions, and the estimation of the correlation energy, show that the potential energy surface for the Li-CO2 complex is built from the crossing of two states, each of them corresponding to a different electron arrangement. One has a strong ionic character and the other is of van der Waals type. Each portion of the energy surface presents a minimum, which is stable in respect to the dissociation limit.

This work is an extension of a previous study on the assignment of the peaks of the photoionization spectrum of C2H6 [1].

Anab initio study of the relative stability for the states2A1g and2Eg of C2H6+ has been carried out. The results of the Open Shell Restricted Hartree-Fock calculations lead to assign the2A1g as the ground state of the molecule in agreement with previous SCF calculations.

We analyzed the energy contributions and the spatial distribution differences of several electron densities of atoms and small molecules. The results show the insensitivity of local spin density correlation functionals in respect to differences in the electron densities. On the other hand, significant changes in one-electron and two-electron energy contributions are observed, although both compensate each other. The projection of the differences between these electron densities, referred to as the Hartree-Fock density, shows a qualitative resemblance between multideterminantal and Kohn-Sham wavefunctions. Finally, a comparative analysis of the optimized conformational parameters obtained using several methods shows that the inclusion of the correlation energy in SCF or in post-SCF procedures gives similar results and that the exchange potential is more important than is the correlation potential to improve these conformational parameters. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
