A layered perovskite oxide Y0.9Bi0.1BaCo2O5+δ(YBBCO) was evaluated as an intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) cathode material. The YBBCO shows a P4/mmm tetragonal structure with 3 × 3 × 1 superstructure. Its electrical conductivity attained 91-76 S cm-1at 600-800°C, which is high enough to provide sufficient electronic transfer for cathode oxygen reduction. At 100-900°C, the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of the YBBCO was 16.8 × 10-6K-1, consistent well with common IT electrolytes like Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9(SDC). The polarisation resistance (Rp) of the YBBCO cathode was 0.088 Ω cm2at 700°C, and the peak power density of the YBBCO cathode cell attained 252 mW cm-2at the same temperature. Excellent electrochemical performance, sufficient conductivity, and appropriate TEC indicate the great potential of the YBBCO for application in IT-SOFC cathode.
