1. High sensitivity of gross primary production in the Rocky Mountains to summer rain

Abstract

In the catchments of the Rocky Mountains, peak snowpack is declining in response to warmer spring temperatures. To understand how this will influence terrestrial gross primary production (GPP), we compared precipitation data across the intermountain west with satellite retrievals of solar‐induced fluorescence (SIF), a proxy for GPP. Annual precipitation patterns explained most of the spatial and temporal variability of SIF, but the slope of the response was dependent on site to site differences in the proportion of snowpack to summer rain. We separated the response of SIF to different seasonal precipitation amounts and found that SIF was approximately twice as sensitive to variations in summer rain than snowpack. The response of peak GPP to a secular decline in snowpack will likely be subtle, whereas a change in summer rain amount will have precipitous effects on GPP. The study suggests that the rain use efficiency of Rocky Mountain ecosystems is strongly dependent on precipitation form and timing. Abstract

Tularemia is a zoonosis caused by Francisella tularensisthat can be transmitted by several ways to human being and cause different clinical manifestations. We report three clinical cases of tularemia with ulceroglandular presentation in young males acquired during outdoor activities in Southern Belgium. Confirmation of the diagnosis was established by serology. Only three cases of tularemia have been reported in Belgium between 1950 and 2012 by the National Reference Laboratory CODA-CERVA (Ref Lab CODA-CERVA) but re-emergence of tularemia is established in several European countries and F. tularensisis also well known to be present in animal reservoirs and vectors in Belgium. The diagnosis of tularemia has to be considered in case of suggestive clinical presentation associated with epidemiological risk factors.

Abstract

We report on “safe” Coulomb excitation of neutron-rich 138,140,142Xe nuclei. The radioactive nuclei have been produced by ISOLDE at CERN and post-accelerated by the REX-ISOLDE facility. The γ-rays emitted by the decay of excited states have been detected by the MINIBALL array. Recent results are presented.

4. Guidelines for establishment of correlations between mechanical properties and microstructure in Al–Si alloys

Abstract

This paper reports an analysis of the accuracy and sensitivity of ultimate tensile strength and strain to failure to changes in microstructure constituents in Al–Si alloys ranging from 7 to 18%Si. The influence of amount of constituents, namely dendrites, eutectic, silicon particles and intermetallics as well as their geometrical features, namely secondary dendrite arm spacing, silicon eutectic thickness and intermetallics thickness on both ultimate tensile strength and strain to failure is evaluated. This study provides information that will be useful in the establishment of robust correlations between mechanical properties and metallurgical features, since they are highly dependent on their sensitivity and accuracy.

Abstract

AbstractResearch conducted in the last fifty years has shown that one of the most efficient techniques of removing tritium from the heavy water used as moderator and coolant in CANDU reactors (as that operated at Cernavoda, Romania) is hydrogen cryogenic distillation.Designing and implementing the concept of cryogenic distillation columns require experiments to be conducted as well as computer simulations. Particularly, computer simulations are of great importance when designing and evaluating the performances of a column or a series of columns. Experimental data collected from laboratory work will be used as input for computer simulations run at larger scale (for The Pilot Plant for Tritium and Deuterium Separation) in order to increase the confidence in the simulated results.Studies carried out were focused on the following:- Quantitative analyses of important parameters such as the number of theoretical plates, inlet area, reflux flow, flow-rates extraction, working pressure, etc.- Columns connected in series in such a way to fulfil the separation requirements.Experiments were carried out on a laboratory-scale installation to investigate the performance of contact elements with continuous packing. The packing was manufactured in our institute.

Abstract

AbstractIn this paper we present a methodology for determination of tritium inventory in a tritium removal facility. The method proposed is based on the developing of computing models for accountancy of the mobile tritium inventory in the separation processes, of the stored tritium and of the trapped tritium inventory in the structure of the process system components. The configuration of the detritiation process is a combination of isotope catalytic exchange between water and hydrogen (LPCE) and the cryogenic distillation of hydrogen isotopes (CD). The computing model for tritium inventory in the LPCE process and the CD process will be developed basing on mass transfer coefficients in catalytic isotope exchange reactions and in dual-phase system (liquid-vapour) of hydrogen isotopes distillation process. Accounting of tritium inventory stored in metallic hydride will be based on in-bed calorimetry. Estimation of the trapped tritium inventory can be made by subtraction of the mobile and stored tritium inventories from the global tritium inventory of the plant area. Determinations of the global tritium inventory of the plant area will be made on a regular basis by measuring any tritium quantity entering or leaving the plant area. This methodology is intended to be applied to the Heavy Water Detritiation Pilot Plant from ICIT Rm. Valcea (Romania) and to the Cernavoda Tritium Removal Facility (which will be built in the next 5-7 years).

7. Effect of Gravity/ Vibration/ Centrifugal Process on Mechanical Properties of an Al-Si Alloy

Abstract

On this paper, a study that evaluates the influence of some variables on the mechanical properties of the vertical centrifugal casting is made. It is emphasized the fact that the centrifugal effect from vertical centrifugal casting brings special features on mechanical properties. It has been observed that the centrifugal effect may substantially increase, in some alloys, the rupture strength, rupture strain, and Young modulus, as compared to the gravity casting technique. When compared to gravity casting, the centrifugal casting process, besides the centrifugal force (pressure effect), always has an inherent associated vibration during the casting. In this study, as an attempt to isolate the vibration effect from the overall centrifugal effect, tests on castings obtained by vibrating gravity casting process are made. A comparison between castings obtained by centrifugal casting technique, vibrating casting technique and gravity casting technique is made in order to fully understand the features that allow the improvement on mechanical properties during the vertical centrifugal casting technique. An analysis of the most important effects, on both mechanical properties and on some metallurgical features is made.

8. Shape trends and triaxiality in neutron-rich odd-mass Y and Nb isotopes

Abstract

New level schemes of odd-Z99,101Y (Z = 39) and 101,105Nb (Z = 41) are established based on the measurement of prompt gamma rays from the fission of 252Cf at Gammasphere. Bands of π5/2+[422], π5/2−[303] and π3/2−[301] are observed and extended to provide spectroscopic information concerning nuclear shapes in this important odd-Z region. In combination with the level structure of the odd-Z Tc (Z = 43), Rh (Z = 45) and the neighbouring even-Z isotopes the level systematics, signature splittings and kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia of the bands in the Y and Nb isotopes are discussed in terms of shape transition and triaxiality. The pronounced difference observed in the signature splittings between Y and Tc, Rh isotopes is interpreted as evidence of the axially symmetric deformed shape in the Y isotopes, and, as previously reported, large and near maximum triaxiality in Tc–Rh isotopes. The likely lowering of crossing frequencies of the ground-state bands in Tc and Rh isotones in comparison with those in Y isotones also implies a shape transition from axially symmetric deformed shapes in Y nuclei to triaxiality in Tc and Rh isotones. Triaxial-rotor-plus-particle model calculations strongly support a pure axially symmetric shape with large quadrupole deformation in Y isotopes. The model calculations yielded γ values ranging from −19° to −13° for the 5/2+[422] ground-state bands of 101,103,105Nb and of −5° for the two negative-parity bands in 101Nb. The fact that Nb isotopes have intermediate values of signature splitting and band crossing frequencies between those of Y and Tc, Rh isotopes is interpreted as that the Nb isotopes are transitional nuclei with regard to triaxial deformation. A correlation of quadrupole deformations and of triaxiality is seen in the neutron-rich nuclei with Z = 39–45.

9. A New Hydrophobic Catalyst for Tritium Separation from Nuclear Effluents

Abstract

The hydrophobic catalysts were originally conceived in Canada for the deuterium enrichment and tritium separation by hydrogen-liquid water isotopic exchange in nuclear field. Unlike the conventional hydrophilic catalysts, which becomes inefficient to direct contact with liquid water, the hydrophobic catalysts kept a high catalytic activity and stability, even under the direct contact with liquid water or in presence of humid gas. Based on the long experience of the authors, in the preparation, testing and evaluation of the performances of hydrophobic catalysts, and based on the reviewed references, this paper presents up-to-date R&D activities on the preparation methods and applications of the hydrophobic catalysts, in tritium separation. The objectives of the paper are: (1) to provide a database for selection of the most appropriate catalyst and catalytic packing for above mentioned processes (2) to asses and to find a new procedure for preparation of a new improved hydrophobic catalyst. From reviewed references we consider that platinum remains the most active and efficient catalytic metal and the TEFLON is the best wetproofing agent. A new improved hydrophobic Pt-catalyst has been proposed and is now underway. The main steps and experimental conditions of preparation are largely discussed. A new wet-proofing agent and a new binding agents (titanium oxide, cerium oxide, zirconium oxide) with catalytic role are proposed and tested. The physico-structural parameters of new improved catalyst have been determined and are discussed in details. The new proposal is a promising idea to improve the performances of conventional hydrophobic Pt-catalysts.

10. Endurance Test for SCK-CEN Catalytic Mixed Packing, Proposed for Water Detritiation System at JET

Abstract

JET machine’s operation lead to continuously generation of tritiated water and therefore, it is necessary to consider the development of a Water Detritiation System (WDS) for JET and also for ITER. The key point of WDS is the efficiency and stability of liquid phase catalytic exchange (LPCE) column, that has to achieve a high decontamination of tritiated streams.Two catalytic mixed packing based on hydrophobic Pt-catalyst, and having closed separation performances have been proposed for LPCE column. A complete data base concerning the influence of β-radiation of tritium and the influence of impurities from feed streams on the catalytic mixed packing’ s performances and parameters is absolutely necessary.The results of 3 months endurance test for one of these packing (SCK-CEN packing), are presented in this paper. No significant modifications of performances and physico-structural parameters have been observed.

Abstract:: The first evidence for excited states in 95Ag is presented. 95Ag is the heaviest T z = 1/2 nucleus for which gamma-rays have been identified. The reaction 40Ca(58Ni, 1p2n)95Ag was used in the experiment, which resulted in the assignment of three gamma-rays to 95Ag. A detector system consisting of the detector arrays Euroball, Neutron Wall and Euclides was used to detect gamma-rays, neutrons and charged particles, respectively.

Abstract.: Gamma ray transitions de-exciting states in the N = Z nucleus 70Br have been identified for the first time using the GASP and EUROBALL arrays coupled with ancillary detectors. The level scheme of 70Br has been established by means of particle-gated γ-γ and γ-γ-γ coincidences. The Coulomb energy differences between isobaric analogue states in 70Br and 70Se show a deviation from the expected behaviour which could be related to dripline effects.

13. Wetter Summers Mitigated Temperature Stress on Rocky Mountain Forests During the Last Interglacial Warm Period

Abstract

Recent droughts have highlighted concerns of how rising summer temperatures will increase tree mortality rates across the western United States. We analyzed subfossil wood samples from Colorado dating to the last interglacial to assess the response of two common conifers to a previous warm period. The trees experienced comparable growth rates and water use efficiency during the interglacial relative to modern despite evidence from model simulations of a ∼30% increase in evaporative demand during the peak of the growing season. High‐resolution isotopic analysis of the wood samples show an enrichment in the late season cellulosic δ18O relative to modern samples, which we find was associated with increased reliance on summer rain. The data are consistent with model simulations showing the interglacial was associated with wetter summers across the western US. We propose enhanced summer rain during this period compensated for drought stress imposed by higher evaporative demand. Rising temperatures are expected to put stress on forests across the western US both by reducing spring snowpack and increasing the rate that soil moisture is lost to evaporation. We typically use field observations and tree ring records to understand the stress levels forests experience from warming events. However, these records provide a limited context because they do not go back in time far enough to when temperatures were persistently warmer than today. We take advantage of a collection of subfossil wood samples from Colorado that date back to the last interglacial period—116,000–130,000 years ago—to assess whether trees altered their water use strategies during the most recent period when summer temperatures were persistently warmer than today. We found that because of higher summer rain during the interglacial, the trees were able to mitigate stress that would be imposed from the added evaporative demand during warmer summers. Future changes in summer rain are therefore likely to be extremely important to whether forests of the western US become subjected to high levels of stress from projected warming. 15. Zero trajectories of invariant πN amplitudes. I

Abstract

Zero trajectories of invariant pN amplitudes have been calculated from the results of the recent phase shift analyses of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki and CMU-LBL groups. It is remarkable that the zero patterns of all invariant amplitudesA, B (for elastic p±p scattering and also for the isospin even and odd combinations) are similar to each other. This is unexpected from dual models, in particular sinceB+ contains the effects of diffraction. There are qualitative discrepancies with the zero pattern of Odorico's Linear Zero Model. The good agreement between the results derived from the two phase shift analyses indicates that the ambiguities have been resolved in the same way. The continuation of the trajectories to unphysical regions and several applications will be treated in the second part of this paper.

Abstract

We discuss the possible types of singularities of zero trajectories of scattering amplitudes and give examples from pN scattering. Special emphasis is placed on the branch points of the zero trajectories that lie close to the physical region. Their appearance is related to small but typical deviations from the zero pattern predicted by dual models. We show how a study of the behaviour of the zero trajectories in the neighbourhood of such points can be used to reduce the reflection ambiguity of phase shift analysis.

17. Immunosuppressive effect of human herpesvirus 6 on T-cell functions: suppression of interleukin-2 synthesis and cell proliferation [published erratum appears in Blood 1995 Jul 1;86(1):418]

Abstract

Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6), the etiologic agent of roseola, is ubiquitous, establishes latency in the host, and can infect a variety of immunocompetent cells, with CD4+ T lymphocytes being the targets in which it replicates most efficiently. The present study was undertaken to learn more about specific immunobiologic effects of HHV-6 infection on T-lymphocyte functions. Our data demonstrate that infection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) by HHV-6 results in suppression of T-lymphocyte functions, as evidenced by reduced interleukin-2 (IL-2) synthesis and cellular proliferation. In fact, HHV- 6-infected PBMC secreted 50% less IL-2 than mock-infected cells after mitogenic stimulation with OKT3 antibody or phytohemmaglutinin (PHA). The inhibition of IL-2 by HHV-6 was also observed in enriched T-cell cultures, suggesting a direct effect of this virus on this cell type. Messenger RNA (mRNA) analysis by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR) indicated that HHV-6 diminishes IL-2 mRNA levels in mitogen-stimulated peripheral blood T cells. These results were also confirmed by Northern blot using the leukemic T-cell line Jurkat. This inhibitory effect of HHV-6 did not require infectious virus, as the use of UV-irradiated HHV-6 produced similar results. Moreover, HHV-6- infected PBMC showed up to an 85% reduction in their mitogen-driven proliferative response, as compared with sham-infected cells. Proliferation of both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells was affected by HHV-6. Taken together, our data show that infection of T cells by HHV-6 results in immune suppression characterized by a downregulation of IL-2 mRNA and protein synthesis accompanied by diminished cellular proliferation.

20. Can one detect zeroes of the pion form factor?

Abstract

We discuss the question of zeroes of the pion form factor by a method which allows us to “quantify” the unavoidable assumptions concerning the high energy behaviour. The conclusion is that all the present data are consistent with the absence of zeroes inside the cutt-plane. If zeroes do exist, then they are excluded from certain regions around the data, whose boundaries are given in the text. (E.g. zeroes on the negative realt-axis are confined to the left of t0= -6.5 (GeV/c)2.)

We present a detailed discussion of the stability of the phase of the pN scattering amplitudes obtained from differential cross section and polarization measurements, using analyticity at fixed momentum transfer and isospin invariance.

Abstract

The continuum ambiguity in the determination of phase shifts from scattering data consists of a family of amplitudes which have in general an infinite number of partial waves. In practical computations, however, the partial wave series is necessarily truncated. We discuss the relation of the resulting (truncated) amplitudes to those representing the true continuum ambiguity. In particular, we show that each of the latter is approximated increasingly well, as the cut-off tends to infinity, uniformly inside an ellipse in the cos? plane.

24. Activation of the Epstein-Barr virus replicative cycle by human herpesvirus 6

Abstract

One common attribute of herpesviruses is the ability to establish latent, life-long infections. The role of virus-virus interaction in viral reactivation between or among herpesviruses has not been studied. Preliminary experiments in our laboratory had indicated that infection of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome-positive human lymphoid cell lines with human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) results in EBV reactivation in these cells. To further our knowledge of this complex phenomenon, we investigated the effect of HHV-6 infection on expression of the viral lytic cycle proteins of EBV. Our results indicate that HHV-6 upregulates, by up to 10-fold, expression of the immediate-early Zebra antigen and the diffuse and restricted (85 kDa) early antigens (EA-D and EA-R, respectively) in both EBV producer and nonproducer cell lines (i.e., P3HR1, Akata, and Raji). Maximal EA-D induction was observed at 72 h post-HHV-6 infection. Furthermore, expression of late EBV gene products, namely, the viral capsid antigen (125 kDa) and viral membrane glycoprotein gp350, was also increased in EBV producer cells (P3HR1 and Akata) following infection by HHV-6. By using dual-color membrane immunofluorescence, it was found that most of the cells expressing viral membrane glycoprotein gp350 were also positive for HHV-6 antigens, suggesting a direct effect of HHV-6 replication on induction of the EBV replicative cycle. No expression of late EBV antigens was observed in Raji cells following infection by HHV-6, implying a lack of functional complementation between the deleted form of EBV found in Raji cells and the superinfecting HHV-6. The susceptibility of the cell lines to infection by HHV-6 correlated with increased expression of various EBV proteins in that B95-8 cells, which are not susceptible to HHV-6 infection, did not show an increase in expression of EBV antigens following treatment with HHV-6. Moreover, UV light-irradiated or heat-inactivated HHV-6 had no upregulating effect on the Zebra antigen or EA-D in Raji cells, indicating that infectious virus is required for the observed effects of HHV-6 on these EBV products. These results show that HHV-6, another lymphotropic human herpesvirus, can activate EBV replication and may thus contribute to the pathogenesis of EBV-associated diseases.

Abstract

Cell surface-associated viral glycoproteins are thought to play a major role as target antigens in cellular cytotoxicity and antiviral immunosurveillance. One such glycoprotein is the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded glycoprotein 350 (gp350), which is expressed on both virion envelope and EBV producer cells and carries the virus attachment protein moiety. Although it is known that some antibodies to gp350 can neutralize the virus, the role of this glycoprotein in EBV-specific cellular cytotoxicity is not yet clear. We describe here a study in which we successfully used a new approach to demonstrate that gp350 is a target antigen for EBV-specific antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC). Transfection of gp350-negative cells resistant to natural killer (NK) cell activity (i.e., Raji) with a recombinant vector (pZIP-MA) containing the gene encoding the EBV-gp350 and the neomycin resistance gene enabled us to isolate cell clones with a stable and strong expression of gp350 on their surface membranes. ADCC determined by using two clones clearly demonstrated that gp350 is the target of the EBV ADCC. Interestingly, this ADCC was comparable to that obtained against the EBV-superinfected (coated) Raji cell expressing the same percentage of gp350 positivity as the two clones. No cytotoxic activity was detected against either nontransfected (gp350-negative) Raji cells or cells transfected with the vector [pZIP-neo-SV(X)1] lacking the gp350 gene. In addition to demonstrating that gp350 is a target molecule for EBV-specific ADCC, our approach in using NK-resistant transfectants provides a lead for probing the role of cell surface-associated viral antigens in specific cellular killing and immunosurveillance.

AbstractAs a result of the high probability of hydrogen isotope permeation through materials used in hightemperature reactor operations, the interaction of hydrogen isotopes with metallic structural materials proposed to be used for fusion reactor designing is of great importance for safety considerations. Determining the parameters of the interaction between hydrogen isotopes and different materials, is therefore essential to accurately calculate recycling, outgassing, loading, permeation and hydrogen embrittlement. The permeation tests were made in collaboration with IFIN Bucuresti inside of a special glove-box to avail their radioactive protection expertise. This investigation programme is ongoing. In this paper we describe the permeation stand facility and the preliminary tests carried out to date.
