- Abstract
Owing to the high workload in the workplaces and shortage of staff, employees suffer burnout and this burnout has been extensively studied in helping workers in professions such as nursing, law enforcement etc. Up to date, there have been no data available on the prevalence of the burnout among Cyprus-based employees. Using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), this study has employed a fully structured questionnaire to assess employee burnout based on gender, age and the industries of employment for both public and private sector employees. The symptoms that burned out individuals experience, the resources that are available to counteract burnout, as well as how to overcome burnout with the most effective coping strategies. Identification of young employees as being at risk is essential for the development of burnout prevention measures. A comprehensive understanding of burnout phenomenology and the role of the aforementioned adaptation processes in its manifestation among employees, has been made possible through the identification of relationships between burnout, coping behaviours and self-defence behaviour among employees.
