- Abstract
We report a novel system consisting of a redox reaction and a highly efficient reductase-like nanozyme, silica-palladium nanoparticles (Pd@SiO2NPs), as a novel detection platform for fluorometric sensing. In a proof-of-concept demonstration using an oligonucleotide as the detection target, a glass fiber-based sensor is fabricated by covalently conjugating two oligo probes, which are complementary to the adjacent segments of the target oligonucleotide, on Pd@SiO2NPs and glass fiber, respectively. In the presence of the target oligonucleotide, the two probes are drawn together by the target through sequence-specific hybridization, bringing the Pd@SiO2NPs to the glass fiber. When the glass fiber is subsequently immersed in a mixture of resazurin and ammonia borane solution, the Pd@SiO2NPs on the glass fiber trigger the catalytic conversion of resazurin (blue, slightly fluorescent) to resorufin (pink, highly fluorescent) with massive signal amplification, indirectly signaling the presence of the target oligonucleotide. We show that the glass fiber-based fluorometric sensor can detect a target oligonucleotide associated with the BRAF mutation linearly in the concentration range of 20 to 400 pM with a detection limit (LOD) of 15 pM and the specificity to differentiate targets with single-base difference. These results demonstrate a new frontier for the development of a sensitive, specific, and inexpensive nonenzyme-based fluorometric sensing platform as an alternative to conventional enzyme-based assays.

- Abstract
This paper studies the physical layer security scheme of a multi-input single-output (MISO) wireless communication system. To improve the propagation quality of the channels, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is employed. The scenario is considered in the design and optimization of the security scheme that there are multiple eavesdroppers and the channel state information (CSI) of the eavesdropping channels is not accurate. A robust security scheme employing IRS and artificial noise (AN) is designed and optimized. The beamforming of the signal and that of AN and the phase shift matrix of IRS are jointly optimized to promote the secrecy outage transmission rate under the constraint of secrecy outage probability. To solve the non-convex optimization problem, a slack variable is introduced and the problem is transformed into a two-layer optimization problem. The first layer of the optimization is to find the optimal slack variable and the second layer is to find the optimal beamforming and phase shift under a given value of the slack variable. The performance of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme has good robustness and can significantly promote the secrecy outage rate compared with the robust scheme without IRS or the robust scheme without optimal beamforming.

- Abstract
In recent years, physical layer (PHY) anonymous precoding has become imperative in applications that carry personal and sensitive data. While manipulating the signaling pattern of transmitted signals for obtaining high communication utility, the anonymous precoding masks the sender's PHY characteristics for the purpose of sender anonymity. Nevertheless, the anonymity provided by anonymous precoding has only been numerically demonstrated, and the relevant literature still lacks analytic results regarding the detection error rate (DER) performance. In this paper, we give the first attempt to show an analytic DER result of generic precoders. Tight closed-form DER expression is derived, as a function of the precoder employed at the sender, block length, propagation channel, and noise status. Some important properties are revealed, such as the impacts of block length, noise, and channel correlation on the DER result. Finally, simulation results validate that the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) between the closed-form and actual DER results is on the levels of
. The proposed analytic DER results help easily quantify the anonymity performance of existing anonymity-agnostic and anonymous precoders.$0 \sim 10^{-1}$ - Published

- Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory oral disease that impaired the tooth-supporting apparatus, including gingival tissue destruction and alveolar bone resorption. The initiation of periodontitis is linked to the presence of oral bacteria, particularly P. gingivalis within pathogenic biofilms. Here, we demonstrated the central role of the autophagy regulator Transcription Factor EB (TFEB) in orchestrating autophagy activation and modulating the host immune response against P. gingivalis in periodontitis. Upregulation of TFEB expression at the protein level and heightened nuclear localization occurred during the progressive stages of periodontitis. Functionally, TFEB overexpression emerges as a potent alleviator of periodontitis-associated phenotypes, operating through the activation of autophagy and the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway in both in vivo and in vitro models. In addition, TFEB knockdown exacerbates the inflammatory response by upregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines. The dual regulatory role of TFEB in governing both autophagy and inflammatory responses unveils novel insights into periodontitis pathogenesis, positioning TFEB as a promising therapeutic target for periodontitis intervention. - Abstract
Accurate estimation of the drag forces generated by vegetation stems is crucial for the comprehensive assessment of the impact of aquatic vegetation on hydrodynamic processes in aquatic environments. The coupling relationship between vegetation layer flow velocity and vegetation drag makes precise prediction of submerged vegetation drag forces particularly challenging. The present study utilized published data on submerged vegetation drag force measurements and employed a genetic programming (GP) algorithm, a machine learning technique, to establish the connection between submerged vegetation drag forces and flow and vegetation parameters. When using the bulk velocity, U, as the reference velocity scale to define the drag coefficient, C
d , and stem Reynolds number, the GP runs revealed that the drag coefficient of submerged vegetation is related to submergence ratio (H*), aspect ratio (d*), blockage ratio (ψ*), and vegetation density (λ). The relation between vegetation stem drag forces and flow velocity is implicitly embedded in the definition of Cd . Comparisons with experimental drag force measurements indicate that using the bulk velocity as the reference velocity, as opposed to using the vegetation layer average velocity, Uv , eliminates the need for complex iterative processes to estimate Uv and avoids introducing additional errors associated with Uv estimation. This approach significantly enhances the model's predictive capabilities and results in a simpler and more user-friendly formula expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The practical applications of bifunctional ruthenium-based electrocatalysts with two active sites of Ru nanoparticles covered with RuO2skins are limited. One reason is the presence of multiple equally distributed facets, some of which are inactive. In contrast, ruthenium nanorods with a high aspect ratio have multiple unequally distributed facets containing the dominance of active faces for efficient electrocatalysis. However, the synthesis of ruthenium nanorods has not been achieved due to difficulties in controlling the growth. Additionally, it is known that the adsorption capacity of intermediates can be impacted by the surface of the catalyst. Inspired by these backgrounds, the surface-modified (SM) ruthenium nanorods having a dominant active facet of hcp (100) through chemisorbed oxygen and OH groups (SMRu-NRs@NF) are rationally synthesized through the surfactant coordination method. SMRu-NRs@NF exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution in acid and alkaline solutions with an ultralow overpotential of 215 and 185 mV reaching 1000 mA cm–2, respectively. Moreover, it has also shown brilliant oxygen evolution electrocatalysis in alkaline solution with a low potential of 1.58 V to reach 1000 mA cm–2. It also exhibits high durability over 143 h for the evolution of oxygen and hydrogen at 1000 mA cm–2. Density functional theory studies confirmed that surface modification of a ruthenium nanorod with chemisorbed oxygen and OH groups can optimize the reaction energy barriers of hydrogen and oxygen intermediates. The surface-modified ruthenium nanorod strategy paves a path to develop the practical water splitting electrocatalyst.

- Abstract
Milk fat content is a critical indicator of milk quality. Exploring the key regulatory genes involved in milk fat synthesis is essential for enhancing milk fat content. STF-62247 (STF), a thiazolamide compound, has the potential to bind with ALG5 and upregulate lipid droplets in fat synthesis. However, the effect of STF on the process of milk fat synthesis and whether it acts through ALG5 remains unknown. In this study, the impact of ALG5 on milk fat synthesis and its underlying mechanism were investigated using bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs) and mouse models through real-time PCR, western blotting, Oil Red O staining, and triglyceride analysis. Experimental findings revealed a positive correlation between STF and ALG5 with the ability to synthesize milk fat. Silencing ALG5 led to decreased expression of FASN, SREBP1, and PPARγ in BMECs, as well as reduced phosphorylation levels in the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. Moreover, the phosphorylation levels of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway were restored when ALG5 silencing was followed by the addition of STF. These results suggest that STF regulates fatty acid synthesis in BMECs by affecting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway through ALG5. ALG5 is possibly a new factor in milk fat synthesis.

- Abstract
Estimates of demographic metrics are crucial to assess levels and trends of population health outcomes. The profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on populations worldwide has underscored the need for timely estimates to understand this unprecedented event within the context of long-term population health trends. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 provides new demographic estimates for 204 countries and territories and 811 additional subnational locations from 1950 to 2021, with a particular emphasis on changes in mortality and life expectancy that occurred during the 2020–21 COVID-19 pandemic period.

- Abstract
Regular, detailed reporting on population health by underlying cause of death is fundamental for public health decision making. Cause-specific estimates of mortality and the subsequent effects on life expectancy worldwide are valuable metrics to gauge progress in reducing mortality rates. These estimates are particularly important following large-scale mortality spikes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. When systematically analysed, mortality rates and life expectancy allow comparisons of the consequences of causes of death globally and over time, providing a nuanced understanding of the effect of these causes on global populations.

- Abstract
While DNA amplifier-built nanobiosensors featuring a DNA polymerase-free catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) reaction have shown promise in fluorescence imaging assays within live biosystems, challenges persist due to unsatisfactory precision stemming from premature activation, insufficient sensitivity arising from low reaction kinetics, and poor biostability caused by endonuclease degradation. In this research, we aim to tackle these issues. One aspect involves inserting an analyte-binding unit with a photoinduced cleavage bond to enable a light-powered notion. By utilizing 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light-excited upconversion luminescence as the ultraviolet source, we achieve entirely a controllable sensing event during the biodelivery phase. Another aspect refers to confining the CHA reaction within the finite space of a DNA self-assembled nanocage. Besides the accelerated kinetics (up to 10-fold enhancement) resulting from the nucleic acid restriction behavior, the DNA nanocage further provides a 3D rigid skeleton to reinforce enzymatic resistance. After selecting a short noncoding microRNA (miRNA-21) as the modeled low-abundance sensing analyte, we have verified that the innovative NIR light-powered and DNA nanocage-confined CHA nanobiosensor possesses remarkably high sensitivity and specificity. More importantly, our sensing system demonstrates a robust imaging capability for this cancer-related universal biomarker in live cells and tumor-bearing mouse bodies, showcasing its potential applications in disease analysis.

- Abstract
Corrosion protection of metal has become an important and urgent topic, which requires the development of an inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient corrosion inhibitor. Herein, a sweet potato leaf extract (SPL) was obtained by a simple water-based extraction method and then as a green corrosion inhibitor for 6N01 Al alloy in the seawater was well investigated by the weight loss method and various electrochemical tests. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopies were carried out to investigate the compositions of SPL. The findings from the potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves suggest that SPL functions as a typical mixed-type corrosion inhibitor. Notably, the maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency reaches 94.6% following a 36 h immersion period at 25 °C. The adsorption behavior of SPL on the Al alloy surface belongs to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The Gibbs free energy value illustrates that the adsorption of SPL contains both physisorption and chemisorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate that SPL is firmly attached to the Al alloy surface by making a protective layer, which can effectively inhibit the corrosion of the Al alloy in the seawater. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations were applied to validate the chemical adsorption and elucidate the relationship between the electronic structure of the active components in SPL and their effectiveness in corrosion inhibition.

- Abstract
The phase composition and elemental distribution of the tungsten-bearing goethite in Dabaoshan, Guangdong Province, China, were explored through various analytical methods, aiming to reveal the occurrence state and embedding characteristics of critical metal W in the ore. X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), powder X-ray diffraction (powder XRD), and scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS) results show that the grade of critical metal W is 1.35%, and its main minerals are tungsten-bearing goethite and quartz. Micro-area XRD and mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) results indicate that ferrotungsten ore ((W,Fe)(O,OH)3), the tungsten-bearing phase, was mainly present in the form of stripped and banded goethite. The valuable element distribution in major minerals was also quantitatively determined. Moreover, a possible mechanism for the evolution and formation of tungsten-bearing goethite weathering was discussed, and a combined flowsheet of beneficiation–metallurgical separation was proposed to provide a theoretical basis for the high-efficient recovery of critical metal W from tungsten-bearing goethite.

- Abstract
The ability of alkylamines to spontaneously liberate hydride ions is typically restrained, except under specific intramolecular reaction settings. Herein, we demonstrate that this reactivity can be unlocked through simple treatment with formaldehyde in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) solvent, thereby enabling various intermolecular hydride transfer reactions of alkylamines under mild conditions. Besides transformations of small molecules, these reactions enable unique late-stage modification of complex peptides. Mechanistic investigations uncover that the key to these intermolecular hydride transfer processes lies in the accommodating conformation of solvent-mediated macrocyclic transition states, where the aggregates of HFIP molecules act as dexterous proton shuttles. Importantly, negative hyperconjugation between the lone electron pair of nitrogen and the antibonding orbital of amine’s α C–H bond plays a critical role in the C–H activation, promoting its hydride liberation.

- Abstract
While three-dimensional (3D) DNA walking amplifiers hold considerable promise in the construction of advanced DNA-based fluorescent biosensors for bioimaging, they encounter certain difficulties such as inadequate sensitivity, premature activation, the need for exogenous propelling forces, and low reaction rates. In this contribution, a variety of profitable solutions have been explored. First, a catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA)-achieved nonenzymatic isothermal nucleic acid amplification is integrated to enhance sensitivity. Subsequently, one DNA component is simply functionalized with a photocleavage-bond to conduct a photoresponsive manner, whereby the target recognition occurs only when the biosensor is exposed to an external ultraviolet light source, overcoming premature activation during biodelivery. Furthermore, a special self-propelling walking mechanism is implemented by reducing biothiols to MnO2nanosheets, thereby propelling forces that are self-supplied to a Mn2+-reliant DNAzyme. By carrying the biosensing system with a DNA molecular framework to induce a unique concentration localization effect, the nucleic acid contact reaction rate is notably elevated by 6 times. Following these, an ultrasensitive in vitro detection performance with a limit of detection down to 2.89 fM is verified for a cancer-correlated microRNA biomarker (miRNA-21). Of particular importance, our multiple concepts combined 3D DNA walking amplifier that enables highly efficient fluorescence bioimaging in live cells and even bodies, exhibiting a favorable application prospect in disease analysis.

- Abstract
A novel methodology for the synthesis of indanone derivates has been developed. The palladium-catalyzed annulation reaction of o-bromobenzaldehydes with norbornene derivatives is achieved through extremely concise reaction processes. The indanone skeleton was established directly via C–H activation of the aldehyde group under a mild reaction condition. This method is simple and practical, which simplified the traditional synthesis method for the rapid construction of indanone.

- Abstract
In this study, the mercury-tolerant strain LTC105 was isolated from a contaminated soil sample collected from a molybdenum-lead mine in Luanchuan County, Henan Province, China. The strain was shown to be highly resistant to mercury, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 32 mg·L−1. After a 24-h incubation in LB medium with 10 mg·L−1Hg2+, the removal, adsorption, and volatilization rates of Hg2+were 97.37%, 7.3%, and 90.07%, respectively, indicating that the strain had significant influence on mercury removal. Based on the results of Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the investigation revealed that the primary function of LTC105 was to encourage the volatilization of mercury. The LTC105 strain also showed strong tolerance to heavy metals such as Mn2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+. According to the results of the soil incubation test, the total mercury removal rate of the LTC105 inoculation increased by 16.34% when the initial mercury concentration of the soil was 100 mg·L−1and by 62.28% when the initial mercury concentration of the soil was 50 mg·kg−1. These findings indicate that LTC105 has certain bioremediation ability for Hg-contaminated soil and is a suitable candidate strain for microbial remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil in mining areas.

- Abstract
This letter investigates the design of the pre-filters for MISO-OFDM systems to shorten the cyclic prefix (CP). The pre-filters are optimized to minimize the length of the impulse response of the equivalent channel while promoting its output signal power. Simulation results demonstrate that when the number of transmit antennas is 2 or more, the length of CP can be shortened to 0 and the bit error rate is very close to that of the MRT scheme with full-length CP and is lower obviously than that of the basic time reversal (TR) filtering scheme with full-length CP.

- Abstract
Broadband, energy-efficient signal transfer between a cryogenic and room-temperature environment has been a major bottleneck for superconducting quantum and classical logic circuits. Photonic links promise to overcome this challenge by offering simultaneous high bandwidth and low thermal load. However, the development of cryogenic electro-optic modulators—a key component for the photonic readout of electrical signals—has been stifled by the stringent requirements of superconducting circuits. Rapid single-flux-quantum circuits, for example, operate with a tiny signal amplitude of only a few millivolts, far below the volt-level signal used in conventional circuits. Here we demonstrate one of the first direct optical readouts of a rapid single-flux-quantum circuit without additional electrical amplification enabled by a novel superconducting electro-optic modulator featuring a record-low half-wave voltage Vπof 42 mV on a 1-m-long superconducting electro-optic modulator. Leveraging the low ohmic loss of superconductors, we break the fundamental Vπ–bandwidth trade-off and demonstrate an electro-optic bandwidth up to 17 GHz on a 0.2-m-long superconducting electro-optic modulator at cryogenic temperatures. Our work presents a viable solution towards high-bandwidth signal transfer between future large-scale superconducting circuits and room-temperature electronics.

- Abstract
Ischaemic diseases such as critical limb ischaemia and myocardial infarction affect millions of people worldwide1. Transplanting endothelial cells (ECs) is a promising therapy in vascular medicine, but engrafting ECs typically necessitates co-transplanting perivascular supporting cells such as mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), which makes clinical implementation complicated2,3. The mechanisms that enable MSCs to facilitate EC engraftment remain elusive. Here we show that, under cellular stress, MSCs transfer mitochondria to ECs through tunnelling nanotubes, and that blocking this transfer impairs EC engraftment. We devised a strategy to artificially transplant mitochondria, transiently enhancing EC bioenergetics and enabling them to form functional vessels in ischaemic tissues without the support of MSCs. Notably, exogenous mitochondria did not integrate into the endogenous EC mitochondrial pool, but triggered mitophagy after internalization. Transplanted mitochondria co-localized with autophagosomes, and ablation of the PINK1–Parkin pathway negated the enhanced engraftment ability of ECs. Our findings reveal a mechanism that underlies the effects of mitochondrial transfer between mesenchymal and endothelial cells, and offer potential for a new approach for vascular cell therapy.

- Abstract
Cobalt oxide (Co3O4) is an attractive catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the OER performance of previously reported Co3O4nanoparticles is insufficient for ampere-level current. The reason is the lack of covalent bonds between Co3O4nanoparticles and the substrate, which leads to a high electron transfer energy barrier. Herein, Co3O4nanoparticles supported on a layered TiO2surface (Co3O4@layered-TiO2) by Co–O–Ti covalent bonds are carefully constructed through the MXene precursor method. As a result, Co3O4@layered-TiO2exhibits brilliant OER performance with ultra-low potential (1.52 V to reach 100 mA cm−2), ampere-level current density (1.66 V to reach 1000 mA cm−2) and long-term durability (110 h at 500 mA cm−2). Density functional theory studies have confirmed that the Co–O–Ti covalent bonds can adjust the d band center to optimize reaction energy barriers. This result illuminates a new strategy for constructing highly active materials on the metal oxide substrate for efficient electrocatalysis.

- Abstract
Tetracycline repressor (TetR) family regulators (TFRs) are the largest group of DNA-binding transcription factors and are widely distributed in bacteria and archaea. TFRs play vital roles in controlling the expression of various genes and regulating diverse physiological processes. Recently, a TFR protein Pseudomonas virulence regulator A (PvrA), was identified from Pseudomonas aeruginosaas the transcriptional activator of genes involved in fatty acid utilization and bacterial virulence. Here, we show that PvrA can simultaneously bind to multiple pseudo-palindromic sites and upregulate the expression levels of target genes. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) analysis indicates the simultaneous DNA recognition mechanism of PvrA and suggests that the bound DNA fragments consist of a distorted B-DNA double helix. The crystal structure and functional analysis of PvrA reveal a hinge region that secures the correct domain motion for recognition of the promiscuous promoter. Additionally, our results showed that mutations disrupting the regulatory hinge region have differential effects on biofilm formation and pyocyanin biosynthesis, resulting in attenuated bacterial virulence. Collectively, these findings will improve the understanding of the relationship between the structure and function of the TetR family and provide new insights into the mechanism of regulation of P. aeruginosavirulence.

- Abstract
Micro-flotation experiments, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) tests, Zeta potential tests, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and molecular dynamics simulation were used to study the flotation behavior, separation and depressing mechanisms of graphite and sphalerite in the presence of H-acid monosodium salt (HAMS). Under the optimum flotation conditions, the recovery of sphalerite and graphite in the concentrate of mixed mineral flotation was 93.37% and 4.98%, respectively. Zeta potential tests and XPS analysis indicated that HAMS was considerably adsorbed on graphite surfaces but virtually absent on sphalerite surfaces. The FT-IR tests revealed that HAMS had no significant chemisorption on graphite surfaces. Molecular dynamics simulation inferred that the hydrophobic interaction between the naphthalene ring in HAMS and graphite was responsible for the adsorption of HAMS on the graphite surface.

- Abstract
Aerogel fiber has emerged recently for incorporation in personal thermal management textiles due to its flexibility, scalability, and ultrahigh porosity, which allows the body to keep warm via thermal isolation without energy consumption. However, the functionalization and intellectualization of cellulose-based aerogel fibers have not yet been fully developed. Herein, we propose a biomimicking design inspired by polar bear and Siamese cat hair that combines porous cellulose aerogel fiber (CAF) with reversible thermochromic microcapsules to mimic biological sensory and adaptive thermoregulation functions. The produced CAF has a controllable pore structure, a large specific surface area (230 m2/g), and excellent mechanical strength (∼15 MPa). Low-temperature darkening microcapsules have been incorporated into the robust CAF to spontaneously adjust color by perceiving the ambient temperature. The functional aerogel fiber fabric achieves high thermal insulation and photothermal modulation simultaneously at temperatures below 18 °C. The temperature of the thermochromic fabric was higher by 6 °C than that of the sample without the microcapsules at a light intensity of 0.2 W/cm2. In addition, the aerogel fibers mixed with two types of thermochromic microcapsules exhibit three color switches with fast response, a color-control precision of 0.2 °C, and good cycling performance. This smart aerogel fibers hold great promise for self-adaptive thermal management, temperature indication, information transfer, and anticounterfeiting in textiles.
