In England, the change of government in the wake of the 2010 General Election brought with it a fundamental rethink of the relationship between state and community. This article tracks this relationship over the past 40 years, reviewing the development of what might have been described as a community movement in the 1970s to the community sector of the early 21st century. It then asks what the prospects are, under a radically new government regime, for delivering the new, more autonomous forms of community action that have been promised under the rubric of the 'Big Society'.

Since it was last reviewed in this journal (Alcock,2010), the Big Society agenda has begun to assume a more concrete shape. This brief review re-examines some of the opportunities and challenges associated with the Big Society agenda in the light of more recent developments and then discusses the prospects for one of its key elements – the commitment to train 5,000 community organisers.

This study, conducted among fish plant workers in Newfoundland fishing outports, reports a gender analysis of the consequences of employment reductions. Quantitative and qualitative interview data were collected from 19 women and 23 men who ranged in age from 18 to 56 years. Both men and women reported statistically significant negative changes in the frequency of emotional and physical symptoms before and after the employment reductions. There were no significant differences between men and women with respect to changes in symptom frequency, indicating that the impact of the reductions was no less serious for women than for men. Qualitative data raise questions for further study about differences in the dynamics of employment loss impacts based on gender roles and responsibilities within the family. Differences in the number of sources of social support for, and emotional support offered by women and men also support the need for further research about gender differences in coping resources.

While considerable urgency exists to have teachers with the knowledge, skills, and commitment to meet the needs of diverse students, studies show that prevailing processes to prepare teachers with such competencies are still less than effective. This study describes teacher candidates’ perceptions of their multicultural learning in a field-based teacher preparation program within a diverse, open admission, urban, four-year college. Results indicated that most candidates developed skills in most dimensions of multicultural education. The program was least effective for candidates who persisted in resisting multiculturalism and who took classes from professors perceived as uncommitted and had a much lower impact on social action and leadership skills in equity. The results and analyses led to planning for change, recommendations for educators, and questions for further research.

The UK has, over recent years, moved from a ‘welfare state’ to a more ‘market-oriented’ system of welfare. But the extent of this change has varied considerably according to the ideological position of local government in different parts of the country. This makes it possible within one country to assess the implications for the voluntary sector of different models of welfare. This article develops a framework for looking at different welfare ideologies and the values they espouse, with reference both to the UK and to the models that exist in other countries. It then takes four examples of UK local authorities which demonstrate the different models and examines the implications for the voluntary sector. In doing so, it examines the prospects for the voluntary sector to deliver both service and political pluralism in the future.

A biological titration of whole peptone dialysate (PD) demonstrated a broad concentration range over which large cell populations were obtained. Sephadex G-10 chromatography of PD resulted in six UV-absorbing fractions, three of which were recovered in sufficient quantities for biological analysis. Fractions G-10(I) and G-10(II) supported proliferation and survival, whereas fraction G-10(III) maintained cell populations at their seed inoculum level. Since it was first agreed in the autumn of 1998, the English Compact has achieved international status, as a marker of – or vehicle for - a new and improved relationship between the state and the third sector.
