Copper (Cu) is the electrical conductor of choice in many categories of electrical wiring, with household and building installation being the major market of this metal. This work demonstrates the coating of Cu wires─with diameters relevant for low-voltage (LV) applications─with graphene. The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coating process is rapid, safe, scalable, and industrially compatible. Graphene-coated Cu wires display good oxidation resistance and increased electrical conductivity (up to 1% immediately after coating and up to 3% after 24 months), allowing for wire diameter reduction and thus significant savings in wire production costs. Combined spectroscopic and diffraction analysis indicates that the conductivity increase is due to a change in Cu crystallinity induced by the coating process conditions, while electrical testing of aged wires shows that graphene plays a major role in maintaining improved electrical performances over long periods of time. Finally, graphene coating of Cu wires using an ambient-pressure roll-to-roll (R2R) CVD reactor is demonstrated. This enables the in-line production of graphene-coated metallic wires as required for industrial scale-up.

This paper presents the growth of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using Ni catalyst and C2H2/NH3feedstock. The role of plasma in aligning the carbon nanotubes during growth is investigated both experimentally and computationally, confirming that the field in the plasma sheath causes the nanotubes to be aligned. Experiments using a plasma analyzer show that C2H2is the dominant precursor for carbon nanotube growth. The role of NH3in the plasma chemistry is also investigated, and experimental results show how the interaction between NH3and the C2H2carbon feedstock in the gas phase explains the structural variation in deposited nanotubes for differing gas ratios. The effects of varying the plasma power during deposition on nanotube growth rate is also explored. Finally, the role of endothermic ion-molecule reactions in the plasma sheath is investigated by comparing measured data with simulation results.

We have successfully fabricated a pH-sensor array based on chemical-vapor-deposition (CVD)-synthesized graphene. As large-scale monolayer graphene is synthesized by this method, the size and the position of graphene can be controlled. Therefore, after transferring graphene onto SiO2/Si substrates, a graphene field-effect transistor (FET) array was produced. The sensing characteristics of the CVD-synthesized graphene-based device were investigated using three buffer solutions with different pH values (pHs 4.0, 6.8, and 9.3). The electrical measurements reveal that for most of the graphene FETs in the array, a similar stepwise increment in drain current was observed upon the introduction of each buffer solution with increasing pH value sequence. This will lead to the realization of the fabrication of multiplex hand-held chemical and biological sensors based on CVD-synthesized graphene.
