Four years of Chaparone testing were conducted on the Westside Farm of Mr. John Mc Kee with the fourth continuous year being 2004. Yield increases were found each of the four years with the Chaparone treatments compared to untreated checks. Lint yields for years where direct rate comparisons could be made show a 12.2% yield increase with the five ounce early bloom rate, 13.4% with the 10 ounce early bloom rate, 18.5% increase with the five ounce rate applied at match head square and early bloom, and a 20.7% increase with 10 ounces applied at match head square and early bloom. Similar increases in bolls picked were found. In 2003 plant sap nitrate levels were monitored after the Chaparone treatments, and elevated nitrate levels were found in the Chaparone treatments compared to the untreated cotton. A caged bollworm efficacy trial was conducted in 2003. First instar bollworms were caged on blooms in Bollgard cotton. Mortality was checked 72 hours after the larvae were placed in the blooms. Increased bollworm mortality was found at 5, 10, 15, and 21 days following a five ounce treatment of Chaparone. The three year average yield increase was 12.2% for the 5 ounce rate applied early bloom, and 12.6% for the 10 ounce rate applied early bloom. The number of bolls harvested was also significant for all three years of the study. First instar bollworms were caged on blooms in Delta Pine 555 cotton. Mortality was checked 72 hours after the larvae were placed in the blooms. This process was continued to give mortality at 5, 10, 15, and 21 days following the Chaperone treatment. An increase in mortality was noted. Mepiquat chloride is a standard use product in the Mississippi Delta for cotton plant growth control. In 2009 a new dry formulation of Mepiquat chloride was tested on the farm of Mr. Kenneth Cobb in Quitman County, Mississippi. Plots were 4 rows by 40 feet and replicated 6 times. Plant growth regulators were used beginning at the twelfth node and continued as needed. Treatments included Arysta MC Plus90WDG, Pix Plus, Mepex Ginout, Stance, Pentia, and Mepiquat Chloride (4.2%). Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (NIR-Red)/(NIR+Red) images were used as consulting tools on two North Mississippi farms in 2002. They were the farms of Mr. John McKee of Friars Point and the farms of Mr. Stan and Tripp Hayes of Clarksdale. Images were used to generate prescriptions from the field. These prescriptions were then applied georeferenced. Nematicides, insecticides, plant growth regulators, and defoliants were all applied by ground as geo-referenced prescription applications. The application equipment was owned by either Mr. McKee or Mr. Hayes who made the applications to their own cotton. Approximately 8,455 acres of prescriptions were written, but not all were applied due to wet fields. In Time provided the images and software which allowed a very rapid turn around time from image acquisition to application of the subsequent prescriptions. Use of NDVI is a very usable tool for cotton consulting. Its use will cut input costs to the grower, and allow for more intense management of cotton crops in the field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
