Aim: To analyze the effects of treatment with diet, Atenolol (Ate), Methyldopa (M.D) or more than one drug (>1D), on the indices of fetal growth and maturation (Capurro test). Material and methods: Between January 1998 and July 1999 we studied retrospectively 168 pregnancies in hypertensive women, excluding those with secondary causes. The classification of hypertension in pregnancy was based on guidelines of the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy. Results: One hundred sixty eight women were included in the analysis. Conclusions: According to these data, the effects of hypertension on fetus increased with a more intensive treatment. The use of more than one drug or Atenolol produced a higher grade of fetal growth retardation.

Aim: To evaluate the existence of changes in the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in workers of similar profession and living in the same area, after a ten year period. Material and methods: A population of 793 male workers aged 20 to 59 years (mean 39.7) studied in 1988 (G1) were compared with a population of 851 male workers aged 20 to 59 years (mean 37.3) studied in 1998 (G2). Both surveys were done in workers residing in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The populations were divided in decades, and the prevalence of hypertension (Hypert), hypercholesterolemia (Hyperch) smoking (Smoke), diabetes and obesity were analyzed. Comparisons were performed using Chi square test. Results: There were no differences in the distribution by decades. Meanwhile the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia decreased in younger people. The present information is useful in the formulation of preventive strategies.

Background: The effects of chronic hypertension on left ventricular function are well known. However changes produced by transient hypertension, such as pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) are not fully established. Aim: To assess the potential of echo-Doppler to unmask left ventricular function impairment in patients with PIH. Methods: Twenty eight women with PIH were studied prospectively with echo-Doppler done 2 to 4 days after delivery. We assessed left ventricular diastolic diameter (LVDD), fractional shortening (FS), E velocity (Ev), A velocity (Av), E/A ratio, isovolumetric relaxation time (IRT), isovolumetric contraction time (ICT), ejection time (ET), and the combined index of systo-diastolic performance (IRT + ICT) / ET (CI). Twenty age matched normal pregnant women studied 2 to 4 days after delivery (NP), were used as controls. Aim: To evaluate the existence of changes in the structure of the left ventricle, atrium and aortic root in patients with pregnancy induced hypertension, a form of transient hypertension. Material and Methods: Using M mode Echocardiography, we evaluated the dimensions of the left ventricle, left atrium and aortic root in patients with pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH). Study population consisted of 95 consecutive patients with PIH who were compared with 83 normal pregnant women (NPW). In both groups we evaluated: diastolic diameter (DD), systolic diameter (SD), septal thickness (ST), posterior wall thickness (PWT), left ventricular mass, left atrial dimension (LAD), and aortic root dimension (ARD). The dimensions of the left ventricle, left atrium and aortic root do not change.
