In this study, thermally consolidating ultrafine aerosol particles (<100 μm) were prepared using a phenolic resin, kaolin, montmorillonite, and hydrotalcite in a ratio of 68:16:8:8 and subsequently used to control hidden spontaneous fires in underground coal mines. Thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimetry analysis revealed that the aerosol exerts a significant suppression effect on the exotherm at 360–600 °C, and after treatment, the oxidation kinetic parameters increased by 65.6%. From Fourier transform infrared spectral results, it was found that functional groups in coal (such as −COOH and −OH) varied clearly. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that aerosol particles from dense insulation layers exhibit a remarkable thermosetting property at temperatures greater than 200 °C. The energy level, charge distribution, and thermodynamic parameters of the composite process were calculated using quantum simulations for the shells generated by curing the optimized PF-minerals at temperatures greater than 200 °C. The maximum contribution of the bidentate ligand to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital in the PF-mineral complexes decreased by five atoms, and the maximum energy difference of the frontier orbitals reached 3.586647 eV. The absolute value of the HOMO energy increased by 48.1%, indicating that the complex formed by the phenolic resin is hardly oxidized. An aerosol transport experiment and simulated fire extinguishing experiment confirmed that the aerosols form a stable system in air and that ultrafine particle aerosol materials effectively suppress fires that are caused by the spontaneous combustion of coal.

Osmoregulation is essential for aquatic organisms to balance their internal fluids and ions and adapt to environmental changes. The gills are a crucial organ for maintaining osmotic balance in fish by regulating the uptake and excretion of ions. Changes in the salinity of the aquatic environment can lead to alterations in the expression of genes within gill cells, which helps to maintain the internal salinity balance and allows the fish to adapt to different salinity levels. In this study, we used transcriptomic data of the gill from the euryhaline Takifugu obscurusand the stenohaline Takifugu rubripes, as well as their hybrid offspring (Tor1 and Tor2), to investigate how the gill contributes to osmoregulation in response to freshwater and seawater. Our study revealed 8 commonly differentially expressed genes among these four fish species. Analysis of the T. obscurustranscriptome data has demonstrated that SLC1a5, a member of the solute carrier (SLC) family, and Gper1, a G-protein coupled estrogen receptor 1-like, are enriched in many biological processes and might be important for its osmoregulation in freshwater. Furthermore, PDE8B, Lrrc9and Cplx4might be important osmoregulatory genes that are inherited by offspring in T. obscurus. Moreover, upon encountering changes in water salinity, T. rubripesand the hybrid offspring Tor1 reveal a marked concentration of differentially expressed genes in metabolic pathways within their gills, whereas T. obscurusand the hybrid offspring Tor2 show a more even distribution of DEGs across various signaling pathways. Finally, the Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the T. rubripesdisplayed a significant correlation with Tor1, while the T. obscuruswas significantly related to Tor2. Overall, this study provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the salinity adaptation mechanisms in hybrid offspring of Takifugu, and holds significant implications for guiding the breeding of economically valuable Takifugustrains with improved traits.

The thermal stability of lithiated graphite plays an important role in the thermal safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, a safer graphite anode usually leads to a lower energy density. This article starts from multiple hazardous factors of lithiated graphite when thermal runaway occurs, considering the impact of defects on the electrochemical performance and thermal safety of graphite electrodes. In this study, turbostratic graphite was prepared as the anode for LIBs. The stacking of graphite was altered to form narrow pores and spherical aggregates, and introducing defects. By varying the ball-milling time, the structural changes of different ball-milled graphites were analyzed. The impact mechanism of defect structure on electrode electrochemical performance and safety performance was investigated. The results show that the spherical structure and large specific surface area are beneficial to increase the active sites and delay the self-heating of the battery. The formation of defects and pores increases the adsorption sites, which makes the surface adsorption of Li+dominant and improves the ion diffusion. In addition, the dominance of surface adsorption and desorption effectively suppresses the problem of graphite flake peeling and intensified thermal runaway caused by graphite phase transition and lithium evolution heat release at high temperature. The thermal safety test was carried out by accelerated calorimeter (ARC), and its thermodynamics and reaction kinetics were quantitatively analyzed. It was proved that the introduction of surface adsorption lithium storage method successfully delayed the thermal runaway of the battery, realizing the balance between high electrochemical performance and high safety.

Fugu (Takifugu rubripes) is a commercially important fish in aquaculture in China, Japan, and Korea. Male fugu are highly prized compared to females because the mature testes are regarded as a delicacy, thus all-male populations are preferred in aquaculture. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying sex differentiation in fugu remain largely unclear. Progestins, which are mediated by the progesterone receptor, can initiate spermatogenesis or ovarian differentiation in teleosts. To explore the effect of progestin blockage on fugu sex differentiation, the antiprogestin mifepristone (RU486) (500 μg/g of feed) was administrated to fugu larvae from 30 to 90 days after hatching (dah). Histological analysis revealed that RU486 treatment resulted in complete masculinization (100 %) of the XX fugu population at both 120 (RU486 withdrawal 30 days) and 150 (RU486 withdrawal 60 days) dah, and RU486-treated XX gonads developed testes-like structure. Gonadal transcriptomic analysis at 90 dah identified 3595 genes that were differentially expressed (DEGs) between the control and treated groups. Among them, the expression of steroid hormone biosynthesis-related genes (e.g., cyp11c1, cyp19a1a, and hsd17b1) and other key genes (e.g., gsdf, dmrt1, and foxl2) were altered in the gonads of RU486-treated groups. Most of the DEGs were enriched in Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways related to sex differentiation, such as neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, ovarian steroidogenesis, and steroid hormone biosynthesis pathways. The expression of cyp19a1a, foxl2, cyp11c1, gsdf, dmrt3, and dmrt1at 50, 70, and 90 dah was further assessed. The expression levels of gsdf, dmrt1, and cyp11c1were increased, and the expression levels of cyp19a1aand foxl2were decreased in the gonads of XX larvae in RU486 treated groups. These results demonstrated for the first time that RU486 induced masculinization in XX fugu and provided a theoretical basis for further studies of the regulatory role of progestins in sex differentiation in teleosts.

In this paper, the features and possible causes of sea surface temperature (SST) biases over the Northwest Pacific are investigated based on a mixed-layer heat budget analysis in 21 coupled general circulation models (CGCMs) from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project (CMIP5). Most CMIP5 models show cold SST biases throughout the year over the Northwest Pacific. The largest biases appear during summer, and the smallest biases occur during winter. These cold SST biases are seen at the basin scale and are mainly located in the inner region of the low and mid-latitudes. According to the mixed-layer heat budget analysis, overestimation of upward net sea surface heat fluxes associated with atmospheric processes are primarily responsible for the cold SST biases. Among the different components of surface heat fluxes, overestimated upward latent heat fluxes induced by the excessively strong surface winds contribute the most to the cold SST biases during the spring, autumn, and winter seasons. Conversely, during the summer, overestimated upward latent heat fluxes and underestimated downward solar radiations at the sea surface are equally important. Further analysis suggests that the overly strong surface winds over the Northwest Pacific during winter and spring are associated with excessive precipitation over the Maritime Continent region, whereas those occurring during summer and autumn are associated with the excessive northward extension of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). The excessive precipitation over the Maritime Continent region and the biases in the simulated ITCZ induce anomalous northeasterlies, which are in favor of enhancing low-level winds over the North Pacific. The enhanced surface wind increases the sea surface evaporation, which contributes to the excessive upward latent heat fluxes. Thus, the SST over the Northwest Pacific cools.
