The Early Toarcian “Oceanic Anoxic Event” (T-OAE) is recorded by marked disruption to both the climate system and marine ecosystems. Here, we present intergraded high-resolution carbon-isotope data (δ13C), bulk geochemistry, mineral characterization from an open-ocean setting in the eastern Tethys. With these data, we (1) construct the high-resolution record of the T-OAE from an open-ocean setting in the eastern Tethys; (2) show that the T-OAE in the Sewa succession was marked by coarser-grained deposits associated with high-energy conditions within the otherwise low-energy claystone deposits that likely linked to a globally increased supply of clastic sediments into marginal and deeper marine basin; (3) propose that the low Corg:Ptotalratios, in combination with bioturbated structure and depletion or slight enrichment in redox-sensitive trace elements of V, Mo, and U suggest a long-term oxygenation event throughout the T-OAE interval at the Sewa succession, and hence, anoxia may not play a fundamental role during the Toarcian negative CIE in this setting; (4) exhibit that a warming and more humid climate began at the start of the T-OAE, and many episodic changes in sediment provenance throughout the T-OAE interval occurred at this location; and (5) suggest that accumulation of organic-matter sediments during the T-OAE is generally controlled by global climatic changes, but a regional environmental perturbation also might influence the preservation of organic matter.

There are abundant natural gas resources in the Lower Triassic Jialingjiang Formation in the Eastern Sichuan Basin (ESB). Important progress has been made in the study of reservoir characteristics and sedimentary facies of marine reef-beach facies in the Jialingjiang Formation. However, there are still differences in the understanding of its natural gas origin and gas source rocks, which greatly restricts the understanding of the reservoir forming process and formation mechanism of the gas reservoirs, so further study is urgently needed. Based on experimental tests of natural gas composition, stable isotopes, and noble gas isotopes with gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS) studies of source rocks and reservoir asphalt saturated hydrocarbons, the natural gas geochemical characteristics, genetic identification and gas-source comparison of the Jialingjiang Formation were studied. The results showed that (1) the natural gas of the Jialingjiang Formation was mainly hydrocarbon gas, and methane was dominant. The average drying coefficient was 99.266%, which is typical of high maturity dry gas reservoirs. The δ13C1, δ13C2and δ13C3values ranged from −36.00‰ to 24.80‰, −37.80‰–27.60‰ and −39.20‰–23.20‰, respectively. The δD1, δD2and δD3values were between −164.00‰ and −124.00‰, −162.00‰ and −111.00‰ and −173.21‰ and −71.00‰, respectively. (2) The natural gas has a crustal source origin, which was mainly oil-type thermogenic gas generated by secondary cracking of crude oil. The gas-generating parent material is mainly partial sapropelic kerogen and was in the sedimentary environment of salt to brackish water. (3) The natural gas was mainly generated by argillaceous source rocks of the Upper Permian Longtan Formation. (4) The natural gas accumulation in the Jialingjiang Formation has experienced three stages, including paleo-oil reservoir, paleo-gas reservoir and current gas reservoir. The results provide a basis for the exploration decision-making of natural gas in the Jialingjiang Formation in the ESB.

Based on a comprehensive study of texture, diagenetic behavior and evolution of dolomite in the Huanglong Formation, trace (e.g., Fe, Mn and Sr) and rare earth element (REE) geochemistry, and isotopic characteristics (e.g., C, O and Sr), four types of diagenetic fluids are identified in the Huanglong Formation dolomite reservoirs of the Eastern Sichuan Basin, China: 1): marine-derived pore waters in the marine diagenetic environment, 2) sabkha compaction brine conserved in the early shallow-buried diagenetic environment, 3) strongly-oxidizing low-temperature meteoric water in the seepage-subsurface flow diagenetic environment, and 4) strongly reducing deeply seated mixed hot brine in the middle and deep burial diagenetic environment. The fluids developed hereditarily from one environment to another, which resulted in its respective characteristics. Fluid characteristics play an important role in the development of dolomite reservoirs: 1) dolomitization by marine-derived pore water in the quasi-syngenetic stage did not form an effective reservoir; 2) early diagenetic burial dolomitization by the sabkha compaction brine formed the basis for reservoir development; 3) meteoric water karstification in the paleo-epidiagenetic stage expanded both the distribution and the size of the reservoirs, and improved the reservoir quality; 4) deep-burial dissolution and tectonic fracturing in the reburial diagenetic stage further improved reservoir porosity and permeability.

Based on comprehensive studies in petrography, petrofabric analysis and geochemistry, this paper describes a unique and rare laminated micritic ferruginous primary dolostone crystallized and precipitated from the alkaline hot brine under the conditions of the Mesozoic faulted lake basin. The main rock-forming mineral of this dolostone is ferruginous dolomite with a micritic structure. This dolomite mostly exhibits laminae of 0.1–1 mm thick and is often discovered with other minerals, such as albite, analcite, barite and dickite, which have at least two types of interbedded laminae. Petrogeochemistry reveals that this dolostone contains a large number of typomorphic elements of hydrothermal sedimentation, including Sb, Ba, Sr, Mn, and V. In addition, the LREE is in relatively high concentrations and possesses the typical REE distribution pattern with negative Eu anomaly. Oxygen isotope values (δ18OPDB) range from 5.89‰ to 14.15‰ with an average of 9.69‰. The ratio of 87Sr/86Sr is between 0.711648 and 0.719546, with an average of 0.714718. These data indicate that the depositional environment is a stable, blocked, anoxic low-lying hot brine pool in the bottom of deep lake controlled by basement faults. The hydrothermal fluid is the alkaline hot brine formed by the combination of the infiltration lake water and mantle-derived magmatic water, consisting of many ions, including Ca2+, Mg2+and Fe2+. Under the driving flow power of magmatic heat, gravity and compaction, the hydrothermal fluid overcame the overburden pressure and hydrostatic pressure of the lake water body, and boiled to explosion, and then the explosion shattered the original laminated micritic ferruginous primary dolostone near the vent and then formed a new type of dolostone called shattered “hydroexplosion breccias”. In the low-lying, unperturbed hot brine pool, far from the vent, the laminated micritic ferruginous primary dolostone was quickly crystallized and chemicals precipitated from the hydrotherm. This study of special rocks contributes to research into the causes of the formation of lacustrine carbonate rocks and dolostone. In particular, it provides new examples and research insights for future studies of the lacustrine dolomite from the similar Mesozoic and Cenozoic basins in China.

In order to discuss the relationship between dolomite reservoirs and diagenetic systems of the Changxing Formation, we studied carbon, oxygen and strontium stable isotopes, iron, manganese and strontium trace elements and the Mg/Ca (mol%) ratio, dolomite order degree, and determined that burial dolomitization is the key to controlling the distribution of high quality dolomite reservoir in the Changxing Formation in the eastern Sichuan Basin. The dolomite of the Changxing Formation is divided into four diagenetic systems: (1) penecontemporaneous stage syngenetic brine diagenetic system, (2) early diagenetic stage strata seal brine diagenetic system, (3) middle-late diagenetic stage mixed hot brine diagenetic system and (4) tectonic uplift stage mixed hydrothermal fluid diagenetic system. New understanding of the controlling factors and distribution of dolomite reservoir development is discussed. Reef shoal facies belts controlled regional reservoir distribution and the scale of development. Burial dolomitization of a strata seal brine diagenetic system is the foundation of reservoir development, mainly developing pore reservoir. Burial dolomitization of mixed hot brine diagenetic system expanded the reservoir distribution and improved the reservoir quality, mainly developing pore-vug reservoir. Fracturing and dissolution of a mixed hydrothermal fluid diagenetic system is the key to improving the reservoir quality, mainly developing pore-vug-crack complex reservoirs.
