At present, the high level of nitrate in tailwater of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has continued to cause serious environmental problems. In current study, wood chips and bark, serving as natural solid carbon source (NSCS), were applied to enhance the denitrification capacity of lakeshore sediment to remove superabundant nitrate in tailwater. The results show that NSCS had a positive effect on denitrification process for lakeshore sediment and increased the total phosphorus removal capacity by 212%–601%. Comparatively, wood chips were better in enhancing denitrification ability of lakeshore sediment for a longer time. At the 70th day, the nitrate elimination (NEL) of the wood chip-sediment integrated system (WSIS) was 20% and 9% higher than the control system (CS) and bark-sediment integrated system (BSIS), respectively. For the WSIS, the microbial activity and the abundance of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) were significantly increased, and the sediment anaerobic zone was rapidly formed, which were conducive to the denitrification of the sediment. At the DNA level, both groups presented an inconsistency in the abundance of functional denitrification genes with the NEL. At the enzyme level, wood chips significantly increased the nitrate and nitrite reductase activities of the sediment, and promoted denitrification. From the perspective of microbial communities, wood chips highly promoted the abundance of norank_f_BIrii41 Proteobacteria and Ruminclostridum more than other denitrifying and potential denitrifying bacteria in the process of sediment denitrification enhancement. Abstract: Lake Dianchi is a shallow and turbid lake, located in Southwest China. Since 1985, Lake Dianchi has experienced severe cyanabacterial blooms (dominated by Microcystis spp.). In extreme cases, the algal cell densities have exceeded three billion cells per liter. To predict and elucidate the population dynamics of Microcystis spp. in Lake Dianchi, a neural network based model was developed. The correlation coefficient (R 2) between the predicted algal concentrations by the model and the observed values was 0.911. Sensitivity analysis was performed to clarify the algal dynamics to the changes of environmental factors. The results of a sensitivity analysis of the neural network model suggested that small increases in pH could cause significantly reduced algal abundance. Further investigations on raw data showed that the response of Microcystis spp. concentration to pH increase was dependent on algal biomass and pH level. When Microcystis spp. population and pH were moderate or low, the response of Microcystis spp. population would be more likely to be positive in Lake Dianchi; contrarily, Microcystis spp. population in Lake Dianchi would be more likely to show negative response to pH increase when Microcystis spp. population and pH were high. The paper concluded that the extremely high concentration of algal population and high pH could explain the distinctive response of Microcystis spp. population to +1 SD (standard deviation) pH increase in Lake Dianchi. And the paper also elucidated the algal dynamics to changes of other environmental factors. One SD increase of water temperature (WT) had strongest positive relationship with Microcystis spp. biomass. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total phosphorus (TP) had strong positive effect on Microcystis spp. abundance while total nitrogen (TN), biological oxygen demand in five days (BOD5), and dissolved oxygen had only weak relationship with Microcystis spp. concentration. Species of the genus Microcystis are among the most notorious cyanobacteria in eutrophic lakes worldwide, with ability present adverse effects on many aquatic organisms. In the surface sediments, Microcystis can be ingested by benthic macroinvertebrates such as Chironomus. However, the potential negative effects of Microcystis on Chironomus life history traits remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effect of different Microcystis diets on specific behaviors (burrowing activity, locomotion ability) and life history traits of Chironomus pallidivittatus (Diptera, Chironomidae). We also studied the interactive effects of microcystin-producing M. aeruginosa and temperature (15, 20, and 25 °C) stress on chironomid larvae. The results showed that the inhibitory effect on the cumulative emergence and burrowing activity of larvae was more severe when they were fed M. aeruginosa among the three Microcystis diets groups. Locomotion ability (i.e., locomotor distance and velocity) and adult dry weight decreased significantly in the group fed M. aeruginosa. Locomotion was significantly inhibited and mortality increased when the larvae were fed a mixture of M. aeruginosa and M. wesenbergii , which may have been the result of additive or synergistic effect of the toxins. Under the stress of lower temperature, C. pallidivittatus larvae exhibited weaker locomotion and growth ability, and the emerging adults were mostly male. At both the lower and higher temperature conditions, M. aeruginosa cause cumulative emergence decreased, and sex ratio imbalance, which inhibited the reproduction of larvae from the population perspective. The fourth-instar larvae showed better adaption to Microcystis than did the other instars. This study thus highlights the adverse effects of microcystin-producing M. aeruginosa on Chironomus. It also provides a novel perspective on how environmental factors may influence the behavior and life history traits of chironomid larvae, and how they may respond to cyanobacterial blooms and global warming.
