The public has recently shown rekindled enthusiasm in offender rehabilitation. This has inspired researchers to revisit the concept of offender rehabilitation. Analogizing offender rehabilitation to parenting, the authors propose an authoritative parenting model (APM) of offender rehabilitation whereby stiff punishment is administered in the context of unconditional love/acceptance to offenders (UCL/ATO) as individual human beings. Through reexamining criminological theories and empirical studies, the authors show the significance of UCL/ATO from various sources in offender rehabilitation. While emphasizing the use of stiff punishment, the authors have argued against criminal laws and policies that punish offenders for their prior criminal records. Caveats in the applications of this overarching model of offender rehabilitation and its implications for public policy and criminal laws are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
