The Sahara is the largest hot desert on Earth. Yet the timing of its inception and its response to climatic forcing is debated, leading to uncertainty over the causes and consequences of regional aridity. Here we present detailed records of terrestrial inputs from Africa to North Atlantic deep-sea sediments, documenting a long and sustained history of astronomically paced oscillations between a humid and arid Sahara from over 11 million years ago. We show that intervals of strong dust emissions from the heart of the continent predate both the intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation and the oldest land-based evidence for a Saharan desert by millions of years. We find no simple long-term gradational transition towards an increasingly arid climate state in northern Africa, suggesting that aridity was not the primary driver of gradual Neogene expansion of African savannah C4grasslands. Instead, insolation-driven wet–dry shifts in Saharan climate were common over the past 11 Myr, and we identify three distinct stages in the sensitivity of this relationship. Our data provide context for evolutionary outcomes on Africa; for example, we find that astronomically paced arid intervals predate the oldest fossil evidence of hominid bipedalism by at least 4 Myr.

A refined dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy has been developed for the Oligocene successions from two high latitude Northern Hemisphere sites from the Norwegian-Greenland Sea (i.e., Ocean Drilling Program Leg 162, Hole 985A and Leg 151, Hole 908A), and this has been calibrated to newly developed magnetic polarity stratigraphies for both sites. These two new stratigraphic schemes provide important new temporal and spatial frameworks for understanding high latitude climate variability during the transition from greenhouse to icehouse climate states. We show that several of the dinoflagellate cyst marker events used in mid-latitudes stratigraphies (e.g., Distatodinium biffii, Saturnodinium pansum, Artemisiocysta cladodichotoma) demonstrate diachroneity at the high latitude sites. We hypothesize that this diachroneity is due to increased meridional thermohaline gradients related to oceanographic gateway evolution and/or cooling of the Northern Hemisphere high latitudes during the Oligocene. Furthermore, we are able to more accurately constrain the age and duration of a major hiatal surface found in many northern high latitude locations, confirming the regional nature of this hiatal surface and dating it from the late Oligocene to mid-Miocene.

Sediment core HLY0503-03JPC from the top of the Northwind Ridge provides the first confirmed Plio-Pleistocene record from the western Arctic Ocean, with calcareous microfossils uniquely preserved to ca. 5 Ma. Results are compared to nearby core P1-93AR-P23 from the ridge slope, which was previously used to reconstruct early Quaternary sea-ice conditions in the region (Polyak et al. in Quat Sci Rev 79:145–156, 2013), and is now re-dated to at least the late Pliocene. Ages were estimated primarily from strontium isotope stratigraphy on benthic foraminifers. Based on multiple physical, paleomagnetic, elemental geochemical, and paleobiological (foraminifers) proxies, we identify three major stratigraphic divisions (Units 1, 2a, and 2b) roughly representing upper to middle (“glacial”) Quaternary, lower Quaternary to Pliocene, and lower Pliocene to possibly upper Miocene (undated). Benthic foraminiferal assemblages were utilized to evaluate paleo-sea-ice conditions, while other proxies were used to interpret paleocirculation and sediment transport processes. Early Quaternary and older sediments indicate diminutive effect from glaciations, reduced sea-ice conditions, and a periodic strong current impact on the ridge top, possibly due to an enhanced Atlantic water flow. Ages derived from the first foraminiferal tests appearing at ca. 5 Ma likely indicate a redeposition pulse that we attribute to the onset of Pacific water throughflow via the Bering Strait. A large hiatus above this level in JPC3 spans most of the Pliocene. The Unit 2a/1 boundary, estimated to ca. 0.8 Ma, is marked by an abrupt faunal and sedimentary change, which is consistent with the major climatic shift that occurred during this time (Mid-Pleistocene Transition). Unit 1 exhibits a strong control from glacial cyclicity, with a progressive expansion of the Laurentide Ice Sheet primarily affecting the study region, and mostly perennial sea-ice conditions. Overall results suggest that the Pliocene and early Pleistocene may provide relevant paleoclimatic analogs for the rapidly changing Arctic environments of today.

We have developed a high-resolution scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscope for imaging the magnetic field of geological samples at room temperature. In this paper, we provide details about the scanning SQUID microscope system, including the magnetically shielded box (MSB), the XYZstage, data acquisition by the system, and initial evaluation of the system. The background noise in a two-layered PC permalloy MSB is approximately 40–50 pT. The long-term drift of the system is approximately ≥1 nT, which can be reduced by drift correction for each measurement line. The stroke of the XYZstage is 100 mm × 100 mm with an accuracy of ~10 µm, which was confirmed by laser interferometry. A SQUID chip has a pick-up area of 200 μm × 200 μm with an inner hole of 30 μm × 30 μm. The sensitivity is 722.6 nT/V. The flux-locked loop has four gains, i.e., ×1, ×10, ×100, and ×500. An analog-to-digital converter allows analog voltage input in the range of about ±7.5 V in 0.6-mV steps. The maximum dynamic range is approximately ±5400 nT, and the minimum digitizable magnetic field is ~0.9 pT. The sensor-to-sample distance is measured with a precision line current, which gives the minimum of ~200 µm. Considering the size of pick-up coil, sensor-to-sample distance, and the accuracy of XYZstage, spacial resolution of the system is ~200 µm. We developed the software used to measure the sensor-to-sample distance with line scan data, and the software to acquire data and control the XYZstage for scanning. We also demonstrate the registration of the magnetic image relative to the optical image by using a pair of point sources placed on the corners of a sample holder outside of a thin section placed in the middle of the sample holder. Considering the minimum noise estimate of the current system, the theoretical detection limit of a single magnetic dipole is ~1 × 10−14Am2. The new instrument is a powerful tool that could be used in various applications in paleomagnetism such as ultrafine-scale magnetostratigraphy and single-crystal paleomagnetism.Graphical Abstract.

Pass-through superconducting rock magnetometers (SRM) offer rapid and high-precision remanence measurements for continuous samples that are essential for modern paleomagnetism studies. However, continuous SRM measurements are inevitably smoothed and distorted due to the convolution effect of SRM sensor response. Deconvolution is necessary to restore accurate magnetization from pass-through SRM data, and robust deconvolution requires reliable estimate of SRM sensor response as well as understanding of uncertainties associated with the SRM measurement system. In this paper, we use the SRM at Kochi Core Center (KCC), Japan, as an example to introduce new tool and procedure for accurate and efficient estimate of SRM sensor response. To quantify uncertainties associated with the SRM measurement due to track positioning errors and test their effects on deconvolution, we employed laser interferometry for precise monitoring of track positions both with and without placing a u-channel sample on the SRM tray. The acquired KCC SRM sensor response shows significant cross-term of Z-axis magnetization on the X-axis pick-up coil and full widths of ~46–54 mm at half-maximum response for the three pick-up coils, which are significantly narrower than those (~73–80 mm) for the liquid He-free SRM at Oregon State University. Laser interferometry measurements on the KCC SRM tracking system indicate positioning uncertainties of ~0.1–0.2 and ~0.5 mm for tracking with and without u-channel sample on the tray, respectively. Positioning errors appear to have reproducible components of up to ~0.5 mm possibly due to patterns or damages on tray surface or rope used for the tracking system. Deconvolution of 50,000 simulated measurement data with realistic error introduced based on the position uncertainties indicates that although the SRM tracking system has recognizable positioning uncertainties, they do not significantly debilitate the use of deconvolution to accurately restore high-resolution signal. The simulated “excursion” event associated with a significant magnetization intensity drop was clearly recovered in the deconvolved measurements with a maximum error of ~3° in inclination.

The rapid accumulation of continuous paleomagnetic and rock magnetic records acquired from pass-through measurements on superconducting rock magnetometers (SRM) has greatly contributed to our understanding of the paleomagnetic field and paleo-environment. Pass-through measurements are inevitably smoothed and altered by the convolution effect of SRM sensor response, and deconvolution is needed to restore high-resolution paleomagnetic and environmental signals. Although various deconvolution algorithms have been developed, the lack of easy-to-use software has hindered the practical application of deconvolution. Here, we present standalone graphical software UDECON as a convenient tool to perform optimized deconvolution for pass-through paleomagnetic measurements using the algorithm recently developed by Oda and Xuan (Geochem Geophys Geosyst 15:3907–3924, 2014). With the preparation of a format file, UDECON can directly read pass-through paleomagnetic measurement files collected at different laboratories. After the SRM sensor response is determined and loaded to the software, optimized deconvolution can be conducted using two different approaches (i.e., "Grid search" and "Simplex method") with adjustable initial values or ranges for smoothness, corrections of sample length, and shifts in measurement position. UDECON provides a suite of tools to view conveniently and check various types of original measurement and deconvolution data. Multiple steps of measurement and/or deconvolution data can be compared simultaneously to check the consistency and to guide further deconvolution optimization. Deconvolved data together with the loaded original measurement and SRM sensor response data can be saved and reloaded for further treatment in UDECON. Users can also export the optimized deconvolution data to a text file for analysis in other software.

Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) adds salt and density to open ocean intermediate waters and is therefore an important motor of Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and climate variability. However, the variability in strength and depth of MOW on geological timescales is poorly documented. Here we present new detailed records, with excellent age control, of MOW variability from 416 ka to present from rapidly accumulated marine sediments recovered from the West Iberian Margin during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 339. Our records of X‐ray fluorescence (XRF), physical grain size, and paleocurrent information from the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) indicate (i) a close relationship between the orientation of principle AMS axes and glacial‐interglacial cycles and (ii) two distinct regimes of MOW behavior over the last ~416 kyr in grain‐size and AMS variability at orbital (mainly precessional) and suborbital timescales. Between marine isotope stage (MIS) 10 and MIS 4, MOW was focused at a generally shallow depth on the West Iberian Margin, and changes in MOW strength were strongly paced by precession. A transition interval occurred during MISs 5 and 4, when MOW deepened and millennial‐scale variability in flow strength was superimposed on orbitally paced change. During MIS 11 and from MIS 3 to present, MOW was deeply focused and millennial‐scale variability dominated. We infer that late Pleistocene variability in MOW strength and depth were strongly climate influenced and that changes in circum‐Mediterranean rainfall climate were likely a primary control. Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) is a salty, dense water body flowing from the Mediterranean into the North Atlantic. Today, MOW encourages North Atlantic overturning circulation and influences regional and global climate. However, changes in MOW strength and depth on geological timescales are poorly documented limiting our understanding of the relationships between climate, ocean circulation, and MOW. We analyzed magnetic properties, chemical composition, and grain size of sediment cores recovered off the Portuguese coast. We dated these archives by correlating variability in their chemical composition to a nearby site with well‐established chronology. We find two modes of variability in MOW strength and depth. Between 370 and 130 ka, MOW was located above our study site during warm intervals and was present during cold intervals. Changes in MOW strength were paced by the influence of the precession (wobble) of Earth's rotation axis on incoming solar radiation. After 130 ka, variabilities in MOW strength and depth transitioned to a shorter timescale mode of operation, in step with abrupt climate events. The sign of change in MOW strength and the pattern of change in pacing indicate that the primary forcing factor was changes in rainfall climate in and around the Mediterranean.
