To evaluate the safety and efficacy of selective catheter-directed thrombolysis (SCDT) in treating acute massive pulmonary thromboembolism (AMPTE).

Suprarenal abdominal aortic rupture cannot be repaired using a conventional covered stent without branches because it is necessary to reconstruct the visceral arteries. Traditional open aortic repair is associated with relatively high perioperative mortality and morbidity rates. We present a patient with a history of thoracoabdominal aortic pseudoaneurysm that had been treated with bypass grafting from the thoracic aorta to the left common iliac artery 5 months earlier. The patient presented with rupture of the suprarenal abdominal aortic stump. He was successfully treated by placement of a modified stent graft using a hybrid technique, which decreased the difficulty of operation and avoided serious postoperative complications. This hybrid method, which has not previously been reported, highlights the usefulness of vascular surgeons having experience in both open and endovascular techniques.

In recent years, Francis Fukuyama has on various occasions expressed a surprising appreciation of the Chinese pattern of development. Behind his appraisal, however, lies something not so well intentioned. Although he provides a theoretical discussion of the reasons for China's successful development, this discussion is superficial and distorted. Fukuyama unjustifiably attributes Chinese success to an “export-oriented” economic policy and to a political policy of “reliance on authoritarianism.” His purpose is not to advocate this pattern of development but to criticize it. He depicts this pattern as unsustainable and as unsuitable for use as a model. While claiming to appreciate the Chinese pattern, he also attacks it, and these attacks deserve to be described as arrogant, out of date and inherently weak. Fukuyama expects the Chinese pattern to evolve in the direction of capitalism, not of socialism with Chinese characteristics. His study is based on a reactionary view of history, so it is necessary for us to analyze it in depth and to provide a rectification.
