1. Optimization of current density of dye-sensitized solar cells by Cd substitution in the electron transport layer

Abstract

This study addresses the growing need for energy worldwide and highlights the necessity of switching to sustainable options like dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), which are well known for their affordability, ease of use, and competitive efficiency. Utilizing the sol–gel method, we synthesized diverse samples, including pristine TiO2, Cd-doped TiO2, and their heterostructures (TiO2@Cd–TiO2, Cd–TiO2@TiO2). A comprehensive evaluation encompassed structural, morphological, optical properties, and photovoltaic behavior through techniques like XRD, SEM, and UV–visible spectroscopy. Structural analysis highlighted the development of the anatase phase in all samples. The particles exhibited spherical grains, and heterostructures displayed dispersed particles with large sizes, enhancing electronic transport and dye absorption for efficient DSSCs. Cd–TiO2@TiO2exhibits the shortest bandgap (3.24 eV). Notably, Cd–TiO2@TiO2demonstrated favorable photovoltaic characteristics, including Jsc(8.65 ± 0.2 mA -cm2), Voc(0.78 ± 0.2 V), FF (0.718 ± 0.1), and efficiency (4.848 ± 0.5). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of TiO2@Cd–TiO2and Cd–TiO2@TiO2DSSCs unveiled distinct semicircles, indicating reduced charge transfer resistance and enhanced efficiency compared to TiO2-only DSSCs. This research contributes vital insights for advancing sustainable and efficient solar cell technologies.

Abstract

The current investigation is designed to scrutinize the Peristalsis of Magneto-hydrodynamics viscous-elastic (Maxwell) fluid with slip condition. The present article is beneficial in a way to understand the Hemodynamics through the arteries, and capillaries by considering the Hall current characteristics. Since the wall shear stress of Maxwell fluid is less as compared to Newtonian fluid hence it exhibits blood flow characteristics. Moreover, modified Darcy's law is also taken into consideration. The phenomena of heat and mass transport are developed in the light of the thermal conduction mechanism given by Fourier along with viscous-dissipation. The governing system of ODEs is found to be non-linear. To achieve the series solution for considered flow problem, perturbation scheme is used by considering small wavenumber. The graphical impact of influential parameters is discussed exhaustively and graphically. The key outcome of this study is that the Hall current and slip both alter the flow fields. Additionally, it has been observed that temperature and velocity profiles show comparable behaviours for various parameters. The slip parameter has an increasing effect on fluid motion and temperature. The bolus's size gradually becomes larger as we increase the values of both velocity slip and hall parameter. According to the author's knowledge, no research had previously been done in the literature that specifically addressed the peristalsis of viscoelastic fluid considering the Hall and porosity effect with slip conditions. 4. Soil Liming Ameliorates Crude Oil Stress and Promotes Biochemical Indices and Photosynthetic and Antioxidant Enzyme Activities in Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)

Abstract

Crude oil contamination is a serious environmental threat to agricultural soils. Different methods have been employed to ameliorate crude oil-contaminated soils. However, little is known about the effects of liming on plants grown in crude oil-contaminated soils. In a glasshouse experiment, fresh soil was mixed with different amounts (0, 1.75, 3.5, 5.25, or 7.0 kg) of crude oil-contaminated soil equivalent to 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% dry weight basis of the total soil.pot−1(i.e., 7 kg soil.pot−1). To half of the contaminated soils, agricultural lime (aglime) was added as 3% of the amount of contaminated soil. Thereafter, lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) was grown in all the pots. After 45 days, growth, physiological, and biochemical properties of lemongrass were measured. Compared to plants without crude oil exposure, increasing amounts of crude oil in the soil significantly decreased all measured plant parameters (shoot and root lengths and dry weights, chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, total soluble proteins and amino acids, antioxidant enzyme activities, and secondary metabolites). However, compared to stressed plants without amendment, lime application increased lemongrass shoot and root lengths and biomass by about 20–50%, chlorophyll content by about 20–60%, carotenoid content by about 20–30%, total soluble proteins by about 15–30%, total free amino acids by about 10–40%, antioxidant enzyme activities by about 10–50%, and secondary metabolites by about 30–50%. Our findings suggest that soil liming could be a simple environmentally friendly method to ameliorate the deleterious effects of crude oil contamination on plants.

5. Assessing the Impact of Community Factors on Acute Care Nurses’ Job Satisfaction and Turnover Intention

Abstract

Background Community factors may affect nurses’ job behavior and decision making. There is a gap in the literature regarding the impact of community satisfaction, family ties, and community preferences on acute care nurses’ turnover intention and job satisfaction. Furthermore, no studies have examined the differences in community satisfaction, community preferences, and family ties among nurses working in rural and urban settings.Purpose To identify the impact of family ties, community satisfaction, and community preferences on turnover intention and job satisfaction among acute care nurses working in Ontario's urban and rural areas.Methods Descriptive correlational survey design was used in this study. A targeted stratified sampling technique was used to recruit acute care nurses working in Ontario's urban and rural areas (N = 349) between May 2019 and July 2019. Dillman's approach was used to guide data collection. Parametric and non-parametric tests were used for data analysis.Results A significant association was found between working settings and community preferences. A statistically significant positive relationship between community satisfaction and nurses’ job satisfaction was identified. Furthermore, community satisfaction had a negative impact on turnover intention. Neither community preference nor family ties were significantly associated with turnover intention or job satisfaction.Conclusion The study suggests that community satisfaction can influence important nurse work-related outcomes. Future studies should replicate and validate these results in different contexts and cultures. Retaining nurses may be difficult if they are not satisfied with their communities.

8. Optimal location and geometry of sensors and actuators for active vibration control of smart composite beams

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis work investigates the problem of optimal placement and geometry of piezoelectric sensors and actuators (S/A) to improve active vibration control performance of smart laminated beam. Theoretical formulation is based on efficient layer-wise finite element model along with an optimal control theory. Control theory is implemented in state space format considering a reduced order model. A laminated beam with collocated piezoelectric S/A placed at the top and bottom surfaces has been considered. A series of simulation based on Taguchi design of experiment has been carried out to determine the optimal placement and geometry of the S/A to achieve best control performance that is maximum modal active damping ratio /minimum settling time with minimum actuator voltage. A multi-criteria optimisation has been performed using Proximity Indexed Value (PIV) integrated with entropy methods. Further, the analysis of mean (ANOM) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are performed to identify the most significant input parameter based on their percentage contribution. For the smart cantilever beam considered in the analysis, the location of the S/A is the most significant having maximum percentage contribution (35.69%) followed by its length (33.04%) and thickness (24.55%).

9. Facile synthesis of reduced graphene oxide aerogel in soft drink as supercapacitor electrode

Abstract

A facile approach is reported to produce reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogel. The proposed approach involves the reduction of GO by utilizing the reduction capability of carbonic acid in soft drinks. The presence of carbonic acid reduces the oxygen functionalities in GO to produce rGO and simultaneously provides carboxyl groups for hydrogen bonding in the three-dimensional self-assembly of aerogel. It is also proven that the as-synthesized rGO aerogel possesses a pseudocapacitive effect, owing to the presence of carboxyl groups. This facile reduction approach by an easily available source successfully produces rGO aerogel with 20-fold charge storage capacity enhancement (121 F/g at 0.4 A/g) as compared to the GO. It suggests this facile approach has great potential to construct lightweight graphene aerogel for energy storage applications.

10. Graphene coated optical microfiber for aflatoxin B1 detection

Abstract

We proposed a graphene coated microfiber-based sensor for enhancing Aflatoxin B1 detection at room temperature. The heat-and-pull technique was used to fabricate the microfiber while the graphene layer was coated using a drop-casting technique. Aflatoxin samples are used as a sensor sensing area soaking solution, whereby the prepared graphene-coated microfiber was used as a sensor probe. The sensing is based on the modulation of transmission intensity and wavelength shift induced by the alteration of concentration of aflatoxin B1 from 0 ppm to 10 ppm. There is an increase in sensitivity from 0.129 dBm/ppm to 0.187 dBm/ppm and an increase in resolution from 0.17 ppm to 0.037 ppm by coating graphene on the microfiber sensor. For the graphene coated microfiber-based sensor, the wavelength shift from 1525.37 nm to 1525.19 nm was obtained when the aflatoxin B1 concentration was increased from 0 to 10 ppm. It reveals a sensitivity of 0.018 nm/ppm with a linearity of more than 90 %. This finding shows that the proposed sensor can be used to detect various concentration of Aflatoxin sample with the ability to offer real time measurement.

12. Thermal dynamics of deposited firebrands using phosphor thermometry.

Abstract

A series of experiments were carried out to identify and better understand the thermal mechanisms which govern the ignition propensity of firebrands. This work leverages the temperature-sensitive phosphorescence of YAG:Dy to non-intrusively measure and spatially resolve firebrand contact temperature along a 6.1 cm diameter area. The highly coupled firebrand heat transfer problem is studied by depositing smoldering firebrands onto a flat inert substrate and subjecting them to flow speeds of (1.5 ± 0.15) m/s. The temporal evolution of the thermal footprint is described and analyzed. Quasi-steady peak contact temperatures ranged between 500 K and 850 K while brief peaks exceeding 1150 K were also observed. The large difference in contact temperatures alludes to the significance in factors such as firebrand-fuel contact resistance, firebrand geometry, firebrand-flow orientation, fuel type (density and heat of combustion), and mass. Furthermore, the findings shed light on secondary heating events associated with shifting of the firebrand contact area and/or fragmenting, which can impart peak net heat flux equivalent to 70 % of the initial deposition. Lastly, considering the sensitivity of ignition on temperature, the work provides a brief discussion on the presence of unimodal and bimodal contact temperature distributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

13. Ultrafast soliton mode-locked fiber laser at 1560??nm based on Znq_2 as a saturable absorber

Abstract

A mode-locked fiber laser was developed by using bis(8-hydroxyquinoline) zinc (Znq_2) as a saturable absorber (SA). Znq_2 is an organic metal chelate with several advantages such as good saturable absorption, relatively high damage threshold, and an easy, low-cost, and simple fabrication process. The developed SA based on Znq_2 has a linear absorption (at 1560 nm), modulation depth, and saturation intensity of 1.2 dB, 16.6 %, and 95MW/cm^2, respectively. The laser cavity produced a very stable soliton mode-locking operation at 1560.6 nm with pulse duration, repetition rate, and SNR of 1.46 ps, 3.5 MHz, and 60.6 dB, respectively. This work is the first, to the best of our knowledge, to report Znq_2 as a mode locker.

14. Soliton mode-locked pulse generation with a bulk structured MXene Ti_3AlC_2 deposited onto a D-shaped fiber

Abstract

We propose a bulk structured MXene, Ti_3AlC_2 deposited onto D-shaped fiber for soliton generation in an erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) cavity. Our saturable absorber (SA) device, based on MAX phase, was prepared by using stirring and ultrasonic vibration, which offer easier sample preparation compared with its 2D counterparts. By means of the polishing wheel technique, we fabricated a D-shaped fiber with a controlled polishing depth and incorporated the MAX phase Ti_3AlC_2 solution onto its polishing region. We obtained a mode-locked soliton pulse with the proposed MAX phase D-shaped (MAX-DS) SA in EDFL cavity. The pulse width, repetition rate, and central wavelength of the pulse train are 2.21 ps, 1.89 MHz, and 1557.63 nm, respectively. The polarization-insensitive EDFL cavity initiated a soliton operation with superior stability as the pump power tuned from 21 to 131 mW; further, the ML laser exhibits an average power of 15.3 mW, peak power of 3.8 kW, and pump efficiency of 12.5%. The MAX-DS SA incorporated inside the EDFL reveals efficient output performance, with a pulse energy of 8.14 nJ, the highest ever reported, to our best knowledge, among D-shaped fiber-based SA.

15. Fear and stress related to COVID-19 and associated factors among undergraduate nursing students in Qatar.

Abstract

The emergence of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has had an impact on nearly every human being with millions of related infections and deaths. The negative impact of the pandemic on individuals' mental health such as fear and stress, particularly among university students, have been reported. While the switch to online teaching and learning played an important mitigating role, it also had presented additional challenges to students' mental health. To examine the prevalence of fear and stress among undergraduate nursing students in Qatar and the factors associated with fear of COVID-19. A cross-sectional design. An online survey was sent to students at the University of Calgary in Qatar. 135 participants completed the survey. The findings showed differences in fear of COVID-19 and stress and satisfaction with the measures proposed by the academic institution based on participants' demographic and COVID-19 profiles. Furthermore, fear of COVID-19 was associated with the age group (26–35), academic year level, and satisfaction with the measures proposed by the academic institution. The study found that switching teaching and learning online had a negative impact on participants' fear and stress. Several strategies were suggested to alleviate students' fear and stress and support them during future pandemics. • Fear of COVID-19 was associated with age, academic year level, and satisfaction with academic measures proposed. • Online learning has a negative impact on mental health, highlighting the need for mental health support during pandemics. • Academic institutions should consider measures to alleviate stress and fear associated with pandemics among students. 16. Combustion effects of a staged transverse jet and pulsed detonation in supersonic crossflow.

Abstract

The combustion effects of a H 2 /O 2 pulsed detonation (PD) staged downstream of a primary transverse H 2 jet in supersonic crossflow (JICF) was investigated. A Mach 2.35 crossflow representative of Mach 7 flight combustor entry conditions ( T ∞ = 1330 K , P ∞ = 40 kPa ) was considered. The jet-to-crossflow momentum flux ratio ( J j ) of the primary jet was varied between 0.5 and 5.0 to span different stabilization modes. The PD provides a short-duration, high temperature and momentum, radical-rich plume of gas to the wake of the primary transverse jet. The temporal evolution of the interaction between the two plumes was studied using high-speed schlieren and OH * chemiluminescence imaging. Phase-locked OH planar laser-induced fluorescence imaging was used to identify the instantaneous reaction zone along the center-plane at various times of the blowdown process. It was found that the interaction of the two plumes promotes earlier ignition and release of heat. The presence of a high momentum flux ratio transverse jet increases the effective blowdown period (EBP) over which OH * is exhausted; thus increasing the duration of the effects of the PD on the JICF. Lastly, the penetration of the reacting layer into the crossflow was observed to increase with the staged PD present as compared to cases without it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. Evolutionary computation for optimal knots allocation in smoothing splines of one or two variables

Abstract

Curve and surface fitting are important and attractive problems in many applied domains, from CAD techniques to geological prospections. Different methodologies have been developed to find a curve or a surface that best describes some 2D or 3D data, or just to approximate some function of one or several variables. In this paper, a new methodology is presented for optimal knots’ placement when approximating functions of one or two variables. When approximating, or fitting, a surface to a given data set inside a rectangle using B-splines, the main idea is to use an appropriate multi-objective genetic algorithm to optimize both the number of random knots and their optimal placement both in the xand yintervals, defining the corresponding rectangle. In any case, we will use cubic B-splines in one variable and a tensor product procedure to construct the corresponding bicubic B-spline basis functions in two variables. The proposed methodology has been tested both for functions of one or two independent variables, in order to evaluate the performance and possible issues of the procedure.

Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least 4 m. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the 6.5 m James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 yr, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.

20. The Effect of Sintering Temperature to the Quality of Hydroxyapatite Coating on Cobalt Alloys as the Candidate of Bone Implant Prosthesis

Abstract

Total hip replacement (THR) that is widely used today is the cemented type, which its application will lead to aseptic loosening. To avoid the occurrence of aseptic loosening, THR coated with hydroxyapatite (HA) is required because HA is osteoconductive which can stimulate the growth of osteoblasts. This study aims to determine the optimum sinter temperature which produce HA coating suitable as implant material. To achieve these objectives, the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) conducted coating method at concentrations of HA 1,0M, voltage of 100V for 30 minutes and then sintered at temperatures are 550°C, 700°C and 900°C respectively detention for 10 minutes. The results showed that the treatment of sintering after the coating process through the EPD method affect the characteristics of the layer thus formed. Sintering process affects the crystallinity of the HA layer. The higher the sintering temperature the higher its crystallinity. The higher the crystallinity the stronger the HA layer attached to the substrate cobalt alloy. Based on this research, the selected sintering temperature was 900 °C for 10 minutes which produced a layer of HA with the best characteristics that meet the standard of implant prosthesis, the crystallinity of 89.4%, thick layer of 70.80 ± 4.18 μm, adhesion strength of 21.87 ± 0.23 MPa, the corrosion rate of 0.025 mpy and 70.3% cell viability.

21. Expatriate health professionals in the Saudi Arabia private sector

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the differences in job satisfaction levels among expatriate health professionals (EHPs) working in the Saudi Arabian private sector, the stressors affecting their job satisfaction, and the influence of those stressors on their turnover intention. A cross-sectional design was guided by Herzberg's Theory. A convenience sample of 204 expatriate doctors, nurses, and pharmacists in Saudi Arabia were recruited from the private sector. Data were collected from four urban hospitals in regions having 74% of the bed capacity in the private sector. A four-part instrument measured dissatisfiers, job satisfaction, turnover intention, and cultural unrest. The results showed that EHPs have moderate job satisfaction. There was a difference in job satisfaction levels in terms of profession and nationality. Stressors influencing job satisfaction support Herzberg's theory. There was a significant positive correlation between dissatisfiers and job satisfaction. Cultural unrest had a very weak positive correlation with job satisfaction. Abstract

The growth of urbanization in Yogyakarta area has a significant impact on environmental degradation. One of the indications is the environmental carrying capacity and environmental settlement quality that tend to decrease. The research was aimed to analyze the environmental carrying capacity of the settlement land resources and water resources as the development base of sustainable settlement in Yogyakarta Urban Area (YUA). The research method used a studio analysis based on primary and secondary data and available mathematical formulas. The results showed that the carrying capacity of settlement land resources in YUA reached 2.89 or conditionally-save. In addition, the analysis of water resources carrying capacity in YUA indicated a conditionally-save result with the value of 2.44. Land resources carrying capacity is considered as save when reaching 22.73%, conditionally save when the value is 60.60%, and overshoot when it reaches 16.67%. Blade fault is one of the most causes of failure in turbo machinery. This paper discussed the time frequency analysis for blade rubbing detection from casing vibration signal. Feasibility of Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT), Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) and Choi-Williams distribution (CWD) were examined for blade rub detection in a multi stage blade system through an experimental data. Analysis results of the experimental data showed that these time frequency analysis methods have some inevitable deficiencies in segregating the blade passing frequency (BPF) components of the three rotor stage signals. However, CWD demonstrated a better time-frequency resolution in analyzing the multi stage rotor system signal.

Abstract: Anthropological research relies on skeletal and dental remains for the identification of species. Sexual dimorphism is the systematic difference in form between males and females of the same species. This study is designed to compute a new formula for sex determination using discriminant function analysis in the deciduous crown dimensions of a paediatric population of South Indian origin and to check its accuracy. The sample consisted of 93 females and 90 males of South Indian origin aged between 5 and 13 years. Alginate impressions of the upper dental arch were made and casts were poured immediately. A digital vernier calliper was used to obtain measurements. Teeth considered for measurement were deciduous maxillary canines and molars. Our study is a maiden attempt in considering diagonal measurements along with mesiodistal (MD) and buccolingual (BL) dimensions as predictor variables for sex determination. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science version 17.0 software. By using the Student t-test, the different predictor variables of teeth selected between male and females were found to be significant (p < 0.05). Highly significant sexual dimorphism was found in the mean MD dimension of maxillary right canine and right and left first molar, BL dimension of right first molar, distobuccal–mesiolingual of right and left first molar and right second molar and mesiobuccal–distolingual of right second molar. The percentage of sexual dimorphism in MD dimensions revealed that the right upper first molar was the most dimorphic tooth and the upper first molar of the left side was the least dimorphic of the six teeth studied. The present study found the level of sexual dimorphism in the deciduous crown dimensions of a selected group of South Indian population, which is sufficiently large to determine sex with an accuracy of 87.2–88% by discriminant function analysis. Abstract: Dynamic analysis of structures with large number of joints is computationally intensive due to non-linear nature and large degrees-of-freedom of the problem. This paper demonstrates that reduced order models provide a good approximation that is computationally much more efficient. Dynamic analysis of bolted lap joints under multiharmonic shear loading has been carried out using both detailed, non-linear, finite element models and reduced-order models. Micro-slip in bolted joints and the resulting energy dissipation is modeled using the Columb friction model. The models are subjected to both harmonic and multi-harmonic excitation, with frequencies above and below the natural frequency of the system. Reduced-order models are obtained by applying Proper Orthogonal Decomposition to the results of full solution. The reduced models are able to calculate both the slip and the energy dissipated without significant loss of accuracy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

There have been no systematic studies of diseases causing pleural effusion in Qatar. This prospective, hospital-based study involved all adult patients (> 15 years) with pleural effusions who were admitted to referral hospitals over a 1-year period. A total of 200 cases of pleural effusion were identified (152 males and 48 females); mean age 45.1 (SD 18.5) years. A majority of patients (73.5%) were non-Qataris, mostly from the Asian subcontinent. The most frequent cause of pleural effusions was tuberculosis (32.5%), followed by pneumonia (19%), cancer (15.5%) and cardiac failure (13%). The most frequent cause of malignant effusion was bronchogenic carcinoma (38.7%), whereas Gram-positive organisms were the most frequent isolates from empyema fluid (62.5%). Histological examination and culture of pleural biopsy were the most useful diagnostic workup for tuberculosis effusions, whereas repeated cytological examination of pleural fluid and pleural biopsy were most useful for malignant effusions. Abstract

A university has to carry out various marketing strategies and efforts to recruit international students as many as possible in order to fulfil one of the criteria for a world–class university status. However, to attract quality candidates with the desirable profile is becoming increasingly difficult especially when the university has to compete internationally and nationally with the existing and new emerging universities. This paper discusses the findings of a study carried out to establish the factors considered by international students before they decided to come to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia for their postgraduate studies. A total sample of 896 international students from various fields of studies for three different intakes was used in the study. The result shows that the main factors considered by them are the availability of the programme, reputation, the conduciveness of the campus environment for teaching and learning, and the location of the university. Most of them agreed that internet and education fairs or expositions are effective marketing medium for the recruitment of international students. This study provides an evidence–based framework to be considered by the University in formulating strategies and efforts to become a global player in higher education.

Abstract

The minimum ignition energy (MIE) of dust clouds is required to assess the electrostatic ignition risk. Recently, the growing number of accidents shows that fire and explosions occurring in fireworks industry are due to electrostatic discharge (ESD). The objective of the this paper is to discuss the various practical concerns during the handling of flash powders of various compositions containing potassium nitrate, sulfur, and aluminum in fireworks. These powders form dust clouds and cause fires and explosions because the MIEs of these dust clouds are very low. This study is carried out with powders of various sizes ranging from micron and nanometer. The measurements are done by using a 1.2‐L Hartmann apparatus. The experimental results show that the MIEs for flash powders are in the range from 89.2 to 19.8 mJ for micron‐ and nano‐sized particles. The experimental results are given for various changes, such as: electrode gap, electrode material, and dust concentration, dust composition, etc. If the nano flash powder is mixed with micron powders, the MIE is greatly reduced, and it becomes extremely combustible. Therefore, it is imperative for fireworks manufacturers, or anyone handling these dusts, to take precautionary measures to prevent fires and explosions involving ESDs. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Process Saf Prog, 2012

34. Numerical Evaluation of Nonlinear Response of Broad Cylindrical Steel Tanks under Multidimensional Earthquake Motion

In this paper, a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) algorithm of the finite element method (FEM), which can take into account the effects of geometric and material nonlinearities of the tank, buckling of the tank shell, and nonlinear sloshing behavior of the contained liquid, is utilized to evaluate the actual behavior of broad cylindrical steel tanks when subjected to strong earthquake motions. In order to clarify a key question—whether anchoring would prevent earthquake damage to tanks—numerical analyses are carried out on the same tank model having two different support conditions: anchored and unanchored. In addition to two horizontal components of ground motion, the vertical component is also taken into account in order to determine the relative importance of vertical ground motion in the behavior of tanks. The consistency of provisions presented in current design codes and numerical analysis results is evaluated.

Abstract

We report the growth of SiC layers on low cost p-type silicon (100 and/or 111) substrates maintained at constant temperature (1050 - 1350oC, ∆T=50oC) in a low pressure chemical vapor deposition reactor. Typical Fourier transform infrared spectrum showed a dominant peak at 800 cm-1 due to Si-C bond excitation. Large area x-ray diffraction spectra revealed single crystalline cubic structures of 3C-SiC(111) and 3C-SiC(200) on Si(111) and Si(100) substrates, respectively. Cross-sectional views exposed by scanning electron microscopy display upto 104 µm thick SiC layer. Energy dispersive spectroscopy of the layers demonstrated stiochiometric growth of SiC. Surface roughness and morphology of the films were also checked with the help of atomic force microscopy. Resistivity of the as-grown layers increases with increasing substrate temperature due to decrease of isolated intrinsic defects such as silicon and/or carbon vacanies having activation energy 0.59 ±0.02 eV.

Abstract

Yttrium Oxide (Y2O3), a rare-earth material is used as saturable absorber (SA) to induce Q-switching operation in 1.55 micron regime. The Y2O3was embedded into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form a thin film so that it can be easily integrated into an Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) cavity for modulating the cavity loss. A robust and stable Q-switched pulse centered at 1560.53 nm operating wavelength has been obtained with the integration of Y2O3-PVA SA in the EDFL cavity. The repetition rate of the Q-switched pulse can be varied from 88.03 kHz to 99.22 kHz with the change of pump power from 128.92 mW to 175.87 mW while the corresponding pulse duration reduces from 3.30 μs to 2.97 μs. Also, the analyzed peak power of the pulse increased from 40.92 mW to 52.67 mW within the pump power region.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has shown its efficiency in helping the construction industry players. The BIM helped to achieve better integration of project information and to enhance collaboration between stakeholders and the industry players from the early phase of projects until the end. Small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) have been under-represented in studies on BIM adoption. Although the technology to implement BIM is readily available and rapidly maturing, the adoption of BIM is still slow. Malaysian government support the adoption of BIM-oriented Integrated Design (ID) approaches in their national markets, however, the implementation of BIM software support systems among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia is considered inadequate. In terms of the implementation of information technology, the construction sector in Malaysia still lags behind other sectors. To have a better knowledge of BIM in SMEs, it is important to first identify the major barriers to BIM adoption in SMEs and then examine potential solutions. Hence, the main motivation of this study is to investigate the readiness of Malaysian SMEs construction companies for BIM implementation, to determine the challenges of BIM implementation, and to develop a strategy to overcome the challenges. An online questionnaire survey was conducted and as many as 115 responses were collected. A quantitative approach was used for this research. This study uses a descriptive analysis method which comprised of structured questionnaires developed from reviews of past researches. The finding of this study indicate that BIM adoption in Malaysia is still relatively low. Many actions are needed to promote BIM adoption among construction SMEs in Malaysia.

A tunable passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser with ultranarrow linewidth is proposed and demonstrated. With the single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as the passive Q-switch, the ultranarrow linewidth laser operation is realized based on spectral filtering effect. using an ultranarrow tunable bandpass filter (UNTBF). The Q-switched laser spectrum is tunable from 1525 to 1561 nm, covering a wavelength range of 36 nm. At 1545 nm, the highest repetition rate of ~38 kHz and the lowest pulse width of 1.15 μs are obtained, with the corresponding pulse energy of approximately 0.18 nJ. The linewidth measurement using self-heterodyne technique yields a linewidth value of 17.5 kHz, which may be the narrowest linewidth for a Q-switched fiber laser to the best of our knowledge. Brown trout (Salmo trutta) were captured from a headwater stream contaminated with moth-proofing agents. Synthetic pyrethroid residues within the tissues were obtained by ultrasonic extraction and examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry operated in the negative ion chemical ionization mode (GC/NCI-MS). Both permethrin and cyfluthrin had been bioaccumulated by the fish and the mean concentrations ( ± standard deviation) recorded were 2046 ( ± 203) μg kg-1 and 25.4 ( ± 46.9) μg kg-1 respectively. The concentrations of these pyrethroids are the highest recorded for freshwater fish captured from a natural ecosystem. At the time of sampling, permethrin could be detected within the stream water (0.034 μg l-1) while cyfluthrin could not. A mean relative bioconcentration factor of approximately 60 000 was derived for the brown trout which was also greater than any previously determined for freshwater fish. The fish tissue extracts were also analyzed through use of an ELISA for permethrin. The ELISA reported consistently lower concentrations than those obtained by GC/NCI-MS. This was attributed to analyte losses during preparation of the sample extracts in a form suitable for incorporation into the ELISA. The concentrations obtained by ELISA were significantly correlated with those obtained by GC/NCI-MS (R2 = 0.985, n = 5). Overall, the ELISA appeared to be suitable for the detection of permethrin in fish when present at concentrations in excess of the maximum residue level suggested for many foods by the Commission of the European Economic Community.

Abstract: Three different physical models of the nonlinear stage of plasma-resonance ionization instability (PRII) of a microwave discharge in fields with different configurations have been studied analytically and numerically. The regimes of 1-D sharpening of profiles of the field amplitude and plasma density, which are described by the self-similar solution of the diffusion equation with a nonlinear source, have been investigated. We describe the scenarios for 2-D evolution of a breakdown wave in an inhomogeneous gas (or in a focused wave beam with the given ray tubes), which, because of instability development, breaks down into separate plasmoids inside which “active regions” with increased values of the field amplitude and ionization rate are generated. The processes of formation of self-sustained plasma waveguides and adiabatic transformation of the fast wave mode into the slow one during gas breakdown in an inhomogeneous field of a p-polarized wave are simulated on a computer.

48. l-mandelate dehydrogenase from Rhodotorula graminis: comparisons with the l-lactate dehydrogenase (flavocytochrome b2) from Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Abstract

L-Lactate dehydrogenase (L-LDH) from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and L-mandelate dehydrogenase (L-MDH) from Rhodotorula graminis are both flavocytochromes b2. The kinetic properties of these enzymes have been compared using steady-state kinetic methods. The most striking difference between the two enzymes is found by comparing their substrate specificities. L-LDH and L-MDH have mutually exclusive primary substrates, i.e. the substrate for one enzyme is a potent competitive inhibitor for the other. Molecular-modelling studies on the known three-dimensional structure of S. cerevisiae L-LDH suggest that this enzyme is unable to catalyse the oxidation of L-mandelate because productive binding is impeded by steric interference, particularly between the side chain of Leu-230 and the phenyl ring of mandelate. Another major difference between L-LDH and L-MDH lies in the rate-determining step. For S. cerevisiae L-LDH, the major rate-determining step is proton abstraction at C-2 of lactate, as previously shown by the 2H kinetic-isotope effect. However, in R. graminis L-MDH the kinetic-isotope effect seen with DL-[2-2H]mandelate is only 1.1 +/- 0.1, clearly showing that proton abstraction at C-2 of mandelate is not rate-limiting. The fact that the rate-determining step is different indicates that the transition states in each of these enzymes must also be different.

50. Ovarian Activin Receptor Subtype and Follistatin Gene Expression in Rats: Reciprocal Regulation by Gonadotropins1

Abstract

The production of activin, follistatin (FS), and inhibin, proteins present in the ovary and involved in mammalian reproduction, is regulated by gonadotropins and estradiol. We report here gonadotropin regulation of ovarian activin receptor (ActR) subtype and FS mRNAs.Expression of ActRI, ActRIIA, ActRIIB, and FS mRNA was measured on the afternoon of proestrus (1800 h) and the morning of estrus (0800 h). ActRI and ActllA subtype mRNA concentrations fell by ∼50% (p< 0.05) following the proestrous gonadotropin surge (ActRIIB mRNA was undetectable), while FS mRNA was unchanged. To define the contribution of gonadotropins, hypophysectomized (HYPOX) female rats were given recombinant human (rh) FSH and hCG, which decreased both ActR mRNAs (by ∼70% and ∼50% for ActRI and IIA, respectively) and increased FS mRNA by 2-fold. As gonadotropins could act via estradiol (E2), HYPOX rats were given E2; ActRI was decreased, but ActRIIA mRNA was increased. The actions of gonadotropins were preferential, as the combination of rhFSH and hCG with E2reduced ActRIIA mRNA. FS mRNA was increased to a similar degree by E2and/or gonadotropins.These data suggest that gonadotropins regulate ActR and FS gene expression via multiple mechanisms. Both a direct action on ActRIIA (inhibition) and an indirect action through E2on ActRI (inhibition) and FS (stimulation) suggest potential physiologic mechanisms for the reciprocal regulation of ActR subtype and FS mRNAs.
