Postmortem examination of deceased production animals with appropriate ancillary testing is fundamental to determining causes of morbidity and mortality. Reaching a definitive diagnosis is crucial to evidence-based herd management and treatment decisions that safeguard animal health and welfare, food safety, and human health. However, for a range of reasons, carcasses sometimes cannot be examined in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. As a result, postmortem examinations of farmed animals, including cattle, are often performed on-farm by the referring veterinarian (rVet) with tissue samples submitted to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory for ancillary testing. For various reasons, field postmortems can be associated with lower diagnostic rates. We investigated real-time pathologist-assisted field postmortem examination (rtPAP) assistance to beef cattle rVets to gauge any improvement in attaining a final diagnosis. We found that rtPAPs improved the success of reaching a final diagnosis compared to unassisted field postmortem examinations. Both the participating bovine rVets and the pathologists saw benefits to the rtPAPs, with bovine rVets indicating that they would utilize this service in the future if available. Our proof-of-concept study demonstrated the positive role of rtPAPs in diagnosing beef cattle disease and speaks to the need for telepathology services supporting food animal rVets and producers.

Work at the intersection of philosophy and psychiatry has an extensive and influential history, and has received increased attention recently, with the emergence of professional associations and a growing literature. In this paper, we review key advances in work on philosophy and psychiatry, and their related clinical implications. First, in understanding and categorizing mental disorder, both naturalist and normativist considerations are now viewed as important – psychiatric constructs necessitate a consideration of both facts and values. At a conceptual level, this integrative view encourages moving away from strict scientism to soft naturalism, while in clinical practice this facilitates both evidence‐based and values‐based mental health care. Second, in considering the nature of psychiatric science, there is now increasing emphasis on a pluralist approach, including ontological, explanatory and value pluralism. Conceptually, a pluralist approach acknowledges the multi‐level causal interactions that give rise to psychopathology, while clinically it emphasizes the importance of a broad range of “difference‐makers”, as well as a consideration of “lived experience” in both research and practice. Third, in considering a range of questions about the brain‐mind, and how both somatic and psychic factors contribute to the development and maintenance of mental disorders, conceptual and empirical work on embodied cognition provides an increasingly valuable approach. Viewing the brain‐mind as embodied, embedded and enactive offers a conceptual approach to the mind‐body problem that facilitates the clinical integration of advances in both cognitive‐affective neuroscience and phenomenological psychopathology.

Nea Paphos, the Hellenistic-Roman capital of Cyprus, was established according to a regular Hippodamian street grid in the Hellenistic period. The city has been subjected to continuous archaeological research since the 1960s. Despite this, the possibilities for reconstructing its fabric were severely limited. This paper aims to gain a more in-depth understanding of the ways in which computational methods can be used in the analysis of ancient urban planning and the reconstruction of its elements, using the similarity of urban processes and social behavior in ancient Greek cities as its main premise. Therefore, a study based on Network and Space Syntax analysis was conducted for cities with a well-recognized urban layout of the Late Classical and Hellenistic periods, namely Olynthus and Priene, and other, less archaeologically explored harbor towns of the Hellenistic period, such as Piraeus and Ptolemais. The results of these studies were then extrapolated to hypothetical reconstructions of Nea Paphos in the Hellenistic period, mainly to propose the location of the main public buildings and to model the urban traffic. This methodology is experimental in its nature. The aim of this paper is to try to assess to what extent the adopted workflow can be useful in reconstructing the landscape of ancient cities.

In the early 1990s, a research group that included Holly Prigerson and Charles Reynolds established that disordered grief overlaps with depression and anxiety but is not the same. They also developed a research inventory for studying disordered grief. Subsequently, Prigerson focused on measuring disordered grief using advanced psychometric techniques. Because treatment for grief-related depression reduced symptoms of depression but not grief, Katherine Shear was recruited to develop a more effective therapy. Prigerson came to conceptualize disordered grief as prolonged grief that is associated with negative outcomes. Shear came to conceptualize disordered grief as intense grief that is complicated by features that interfere with adaption to the loss. In 2013 a hybrid disorder composed of criteria from both groups was placed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition(DSM-5) appendix. Under the leadership of the DSMSteering Committee, a summit meeting in 2019 helped break an impasse, and a revised prolonged grief disorder became an official DSMdiagnosis.

Background:: Reliable in vitrocellular models are needed to study the phenotypic modulation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in health and disease. The aim of this study was to optimize gelatin methacrylate (GelMA)/alginate hydrogels for bioprinting three-dimensional (3D) SMC constructs. Methods:: Four different hydrogel groups were prepared by mixing different concentrations (% w/v) of GelMA and alginate: G1 (5/1.5), G2 (5/3), G3 (7.5/1.5), and G4 (7.5/3). GelMA 10% was used as control (G5). A circular structure containing human bladder SMCs was fabricated by using an extrusion-based bioprinter. The effects of the mixing ratios on printability, viability, proliferation, and differentiation of the cells were investigated. Results:: Rheological analysis showed that the addition of alginate significantly stabilized the change in mechanical properties with temperature variations. The group with the highest GelMA and alginate concentrations (G4) exhibited the highest viscosity, resulting in better stability of the 3D construct after crosslinking. Compared to other hydrogel compositions, cells in G4 maintained high viability (> 80%), exhibited spindle-shaped morphology, and showed a significantly higher proliferation rate within an 8-day period. More importantly, G4 provided an optimal environment for the induction of a SMC contractile phenotype, as evidenced by significant changes in the expression of marker proteins and morphological parameters. Conclusion:: Adjusting the composition of GelMA/alginate hydrogels is an effective means of controlling the SMC phenotype. These hydrogels support bioprinting of 3D models to study phenotypic smooth muscle adaptation, with the prospect of using the constructs in the study of therapies for the treatment of urethral strictures.

The aim of this study was to retrospectively examine trends in percutaneous exposure incidences (PEIs) at the School of Dentistry (SoD) from 2009 to 2019 and to report on the underreporting rate of PEIs, current attitudes, and awareness of PEI safety protocols from clinical staff and students at the SoD in 2019.

The frequency of medical emergencies in a dental setting is relatively low. However, most dental treatment occurs outside of a hospital setting; thus the time to respond to a life‐threatening situation is crucial. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and characteristics of medical emergencies that occurred at the Griffith University Dental Clinic over a 6‐year period. Data involving medical emergencies was collected at a dental school between January 2014 and December 2019. Data was obtained from the risk incident reporting system (GSafe), and descriptive statistics were analyzed using IBM SPSS. The frequency of medical emergencies in a dental setting over the 6‐year retrospective period based on the number of dental services provided was 0.037% (n= 108). The three most common medical emergencies were syncope (25.0%), hypoglycemia (16.7%), and foreign body ingestion (13.9%). These happened more often during dental extractions (26.9%), followed by local anesthesia (16.7%) and restorative procedures (13.0%). A larger portion of these incidents occurred during dental treatment (62.0%) as opposed to before (12.0%) or after (26.0%). Most medical emergencies happened within the dental student clinic (72.2%) followed by the dental waiting room (19.5%) and dental private clinic (8.3%). Overall, the number of medical emergencies at the Griffith University Dental Clinic was low. The most common medical emergencies were syncope, hypoglycemia, and foreign body ingestion. Dental education in preventative strategies and training in basic life support is necessary to ensure dental practitioners can manage the acute deterioration of a patient promptly.

Etrolizumab is a gut-targeted anti-β7 integrin monoclonal antibody. In an earlier phase 2 induction study, etrolizumab significantly improved clinical remission relative to placebo in patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. The HIBISCUS studies aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of etrolizumab to adalimumab and placebo for induction of remission in patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis.

Purpose: We described the phenotype of a large 4-generation family with Hyperparathyrodism-Jaw Tumor syndrome (HPT-JT) associated with a rare deletion of exon 3 of the CDC73gene. Methods: We collected medical, genetic data on 24 family members descended from a common ancestor carrying a heterozygous deletion of exon 3. Results: Thirteen carried the deletion, the penetrance was estimated at 50% at 40 years. Seven patients (39 ± 14.5 years) presented with HPT which could start at 13. Median plasmatic calcium and PTH levels were 3.13 ± 0.7 mmol/L and 115 ± 406 pg/ml, respectively. Kidney disease related to hypercalcemia were present in 57.1% of patients. All seven patients underwent surgery to remove a single parathyroid adenoma. One recurrence occurred 7 years post-surgery. No parathyroid carcinoma has been found to date. We found two atypical parathyroid adenomas. We described an additional somatic variant in exon 1 of gene CDC73in two tumors. Jaw tumors were not necessarily associated with hyperparathyroidism, as shown in one case. Two kidney cysts were also reported. Variable phenotype expressivity was emphasized by clinical presentations in 2 monozygotic twins: acute hypercalcemia, kidney failure and ossifying fibroma in one twin, versus normocalcemic parathyroid adenoma in the other one. Conclusion: We report a family carrier of a deletion of exon 3 of the CDC73gene. This is characterized by a high level of hypercalcemia, deleterious kidney effects and atypical parathyroid adenomas without carcinomas. Onset and intensity of HPT remain unpredictable. The additional somatic mutation found in the parathyroid tumor could lead to these phenotypical variations.

The aim of this study is to offer a paradigmatic analysis of the development of the discipline – called predominantly “ethnography” and “ethnology” in the 20thcentury Slovakia – in the background of the history of its development within one of the key institutions in Slovakia where research is conducted – the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (IESA SAS).

Purpose: With the advancements in technology, dental pedagogy has also evolved, and new learning technologies have emerged. Virtual reality (VR) as an education tool in dentistry is underutilised. VR as an adjunct in local anaesthesia (LA) teaching in paediatric dentistry has not been investigated. The study aimed to investigate dental student’s perception of dental LA VR simulation on a paediatric patient and to determine whether this can improve students learning experience. Methods: Seventy-one students participated in a self-administered questionnaire before and after the use of dental LA VR simulator. Descriptive analysis was performed to determine the perceptions of experience gained through VR. The data were tabulated, graphed, and analysed using SPSS and GraphPad Prism software. Results: The study noted that 89.9% of participants perceived that it would improve their LA skills. After using dental LA VR, 83.1% of participants experienced more engaged in the learning activity, and 55.0% of participants agreed/strongly agreed that it improved their understanding of anatomical landmarks. Around 56.4% of participants agreed/strongly agreed that it added value compared with traditional LA teaching methods. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the use of VR simulation can enhance students engagement and learning experience in paediatric dentistry settings and can be used as an additional means of LA training.

Greater awareness and knowledge of oral cancer has been shown to increase patient presentation for opportunistic screening. This study aimed to identify the level of awareness and knowledge of oral cancer amongst adult patients in regional New South Wales. A total of 444 adult dental patients participated in a self‐administered questionnaire at one of five regional university dental clinics between 23rdMay and 25thJuly. Data analyses were performed using the chi‐square test and binary logistic regression to compare sociodemographic characteristics and the self‐declared awareness and knowledge of oral cancer. The study revealed that 73.8% of patients were aware of oral cancer; however, only 28.8% knew that they had been previously screened for oral cancer. Being female (P< 0.001, OR = 2.57), having an excellent level of oral health (P= 0.042, OR = 3.34) and previous attendance at a dental clinic of the regional university (P= 0.014, OR = 2.89) significantly enhanced awareness of oral cancer. The findings of this study have broad implications for both clinicians and public health professionals, providing a platform for discussion regarding the sociodemographic factors contributing to reduced knowledge and awareness of oral cancer amongst patients. This study also identified an essential avenue to allow a more targeted approach in future campaigns to increase education.

Low Na+intake activates aldosterone signaling, which increases renal Na+reabsorption through increased apical activity of the NaCl cotransporter (NCC) and the epithelial Na+channel (ENaC). Na+transporter proteins are excreted in urine as an integral part of cell-derived extracellular vesicles (uEVs). It was hypothesized that Na+transport protein levels in uEVs from healthy humans reflect their physiological regulation by aldosterone. Urine and plasma samples from 10 healthy men (median age: 22.8 yr) were collected after 5 days on a low-Na+(70 mmol/day) diet and 5 days on a high-Na+(250 mmol/day) diet. uEVs were isolated by ultracentrifugation and analyzed by Western blot analysis for EV markers (CD9, CD63, and ALIX), transport proteins (Na+-K+-ATPase α1-subunit, NCC, ENaC α- and γ-subunits, and aquaporin 2), and the ENaC-cleaving protease prostasin. Plasma renin and aldosterone concentrations increased during the low-Na+diet. uEV size and concentration were not different between diets by tunable resistive pulse sensing. EV markers ALIX and CD9 increased with the low-Na+diet, whereas CD63 and aquaporin 2 excretion were unchanged. Full-length ENaC γ-subunits were generally not detectable in uEVs, whereas ENaC α-subunits, NCC, and phosphorylated NCC were consistently detected but not changed by Na+intake. Prostasin increased with low Na+in uEVs. uEV excretion of transporters was not correlated with blood pressure, urinary Na+and K+excretion, plasma renin, or aldosterone. In conclusion, apical Na+transporter proteins and proteases were excreted in uEVs, and while the excretion rate and size of uEVs were not affected, EV markers and prostasin increased in response to the low-Na+diet.

Telepathology, as a subset of teleconsulting, is pathology interpretation performed at a distance. Telepathology is not a new phenomenon, but since ~2015, significant advances in information technology and telecommunications coupled with the pandemic have led to unprecedented sophistication, accessibility, and use of telepathology in human and veterinary medicine. Furthermore, telepathology can connect veterinary practices to distant laboratories and provide support for underserved animals and communities. Through our scoping review, we provide an overview of how telepathology is being used in veterinary medicine, identify gaps in the literature, and highlight future areas of research and service development. We searched MEDLINE, CAB Abstracts, and the gray literature, and included all relevant literature. Despite the widespread use of digital microscopy in large veterinary diagnostic laboratories, we identified a paucity of literature describing the use of telepathology in veterinary medicine, with a significant gap in studies addressing the validation of whole-slide imaging for primary diagnosis. Underutilization of telepathology to support postmortem examinations conducted in the field was also identified, which indicates a potential area for service development. The use of telepathology is increasing in veterinary medicine, and pathologists must keep pace with the changing technology, ensure the validation of innovative technologies, and identify novel uses to advance the profession.

The initial plans for the DSM-5revision envisioned a paradigm shift away from traditional diagnostic categories. However, plans for a major move from descriptive to etiologic diagnoses were quickly abandoned as infeasible. Support was much broader for adding dimensional/spectrum constructs to the categorical diagnoses, although this was interpreted in various ways. Delegation of substantial autonomy to work groups with modest central coordination was seen as problematic by some work groups and positively by others. Controversies emerged around the standards for diagnostic change, and the degree to which the same standards should be used across diagnostic groups. The Summit Group was given the final task of trying to forge a consensus among the various review groups. We conclude with thoughts about the difficulty of trying to revise an entire manual all at once and the desirability of developing clear rules for change at the outset of such a diagnostic project.

Ex vivo cultured human limbal epithelial stem/progenitor cells (hLESCs) are the main source for regenerative therapy of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), which is worldwide one of the major causes of corneal blindness. Despite many stemness‐associated markers have been identified within the limbal niche, the phenotype of the earliest hLESCs has not been hitherto identified. We sought to confirm or refute the use of tumor protein p63 (p63) and ATP binding cassette subfamily B member 5 (ABCB5) as surrogate markers for hLESCs early within the limbal differentiation hierarchy. Based on a robust fluorescence‐activated cell sorting and subsequent RNA isolation protocol, a comprehensive transcriptomic profile was obtained from four subpopulations of cultured hLESCs. The subpopulations were defined by co‐expression of two putative stem/progenitor markers, the p63 and ABCB5, and the corneal differentiation marker cytokeratin 3. A comparative transcriptomic analysis yielded novel data that indicated association between pigmentation and differentiation, with the p63 positive populations being the most pigmented and immature of the progenitors. In contrast, ABCB5, either alone or in co‐expression patterns, identified more committed progenitor cells with less pigmentation. In conclusion, p63 is superior to ABCB5 as a marker for stemness. Obstruction of urine flow at the level of the pelvo-ureteric junction (UPJO) and subsequent development of hydronephrosis is one of the most common congenital renal malformations. UPJO is associated with development of salt-sensitive hypertension, which is set by the obstructed kidney, and with a stimulated renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in rodent models. This study aimed at investigating the hypothesis that 1) in pediatric patients with UPJO the RAAS is activated before surgical relief of the obstruction; 2) in rats with UPJO the RAAS activation is reflected by increased abundance of renal aldosterone-stimulated Na transporters; and 3) the injured UPJO kidney allows aberrant filtration of plasminogen, leading to proteolytic activation of the epithelial Na channel γ-subunit (γ-ENaC). Hydronephrosis resulting from UPJO in pediatric patients and rats was associated with increased urinary plasminogen-to-creatinine ratio. In pediatric patients, plasma renin, angiotensin II, urine and plasma aldosterone, and urine soluble prorenin receptor did not differ significantly before or after surgery, or compared with controls. Increased plasmin-to-plasminogen ratio was seen in UPJO rats. Intact γ-ENaC abundance was not changed in UPJO kidney, whereas low-molecular cleavage product abundance increased. The Na-Cl cotransporter displayed significantly lower abundance in the UPJO kidney compared with the nonobstructed contralateral kidney. The Na-K-ATPase α-subunit was unaltered. Treatment with an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (8 days, captopril) significantly lowered blood pressure in UPJO rats. It is concluded that the RAAS contributes to hypertension following partial obstruction of urine flow at the pelvo-ureteric junction with potential contribution from proteolytic activation of ENaC.

Albuminuria predicts adverse renal outcome in kidney transplant recipients. The present study addressed the hypothesis that albuminuria is associated with increased urine serine proteases with the ability to activate the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) and with greater extracellular volume and higher blood pressure. In a cross-sectional design, kidney transplant recipients with (n= 18) and without (n= 19) albuminuria were included for office blood pressure measurements, estimation of volume status by bioimpedance, and collection of spot urine and plasma samples. Urine was analyzed for serine proteases and for the ability to activate ENaC current in vitro. Urine exosome protein was immunoblotted for prostasin and γ-ENaC protein. In the present study, it was found that, compared with nonalbuminuria (8.8 mg/g creatinine), albuminuric (1,722 mg/g creatinine) kidney transplant recipients had a higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure, despite receiving significantly more antihypertensives, and a greater urinary total plasminogen, active plasmin, active urokinase-type plasminogen activator, and prostasin protein abundance, which correlated significantly with u-albumin. Fluid overload correlated with systolic blood pressure, urinary albumin/creatinine, and plasminogen/creatinine. Urine from albuminuric kidney transplant recipients evoked a greater amiloride- and aprotinin-sensitive inward current in single collecting duct cells (murine cell line M1). γENaC subunits at 50 and 75 kDa showed increased abundance in urine exosomes from albuminuric kidney transplant recipients when compared with controls. These findings show that albuminuria in kidney transplant recipients is associated with hypertension, ability of urine to proteolytically activate ENaC current, and increased abundance of γENaC. ENaC activity could contribute to hypertension and adverse outcome in posttransplant proteinuria.

Myogenic precursors sense and dynamically respond to mechanical stimulation through complex integrin-mediated mechanotransduction, in which focal adhesion kinase (FAK) is a fundamental intracellular signaling mediator. When skeletal myoblasts are exposed to uniaxial cyclic tensile strain (UCTS), they display uniform alignment and an enhanced rate of differentiation. In this work, we explored the role of FAK activation by using C2C12 myoblasts that were grown on flexible culture plates and exposed to UCTS during the early differentiation phase. After 24 h, the cells oriented perpendicularly to the direction of strain and exhibited an enhanced differentiation profile. Next, the cells were exposed to a strain field that was either kept in the same direction or rotated 90°, in the presence or not of an FAK phosphorylation inhibitor. On reorientation of the strain field by 90°, the cells reassembled their focal adhesions and actin cytoskeleton to regain the perpendicular position with respect to the engaging stress. After blocking the FAK, however, the cells failed to respond to the reoriented strain field and their differentiation was abrogated. Interestingly, when the strain field remained in the same direction, the FAK inhibitor compromised the differentiation, even though there was no evident change in cell orientation. Our data indicate that during exposure to UCTS, the activation of FAK is necessary for the myoblasts to undergo alignment and enhanced differentiation.

Beginning with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(3rd ed.; DSM-III), depressive episodes following the loss of a loved one were considered to represent normal grief if they did not include certain severe symptoms or if they lasted less than 2 months. This was called the bereavement exclusion rule. A debate about whether to eliminate the bereavement exclusion became a hotly contested issue during the DSM-5revision process. The debate involved disagreements about which research studies were most relevant to assessing the validity of the bereavement exclusion rule, different value commitments regarding the distinction between normal and abnormal, and contrasting philosophical assumptions about the nature of psychiatric disorder. Based on a review of the arguments offered in academic journals, the blogosphere, and in the mass media, and on interviews with active participants in the debate, this article narrates a consensus history that reflects the diversity of viewpoints promoted during the debate and the diversity of views on the outcome.

Adipose‐derived stem cells (ASCs) are being tested in clinical trials related to cell‐based regenerative therapies. Although most of the current expansion protocols for ASCs use fetal calf serum (FCS), xenogeneic‐free medium supplements are greatly desired. This study aims to compare the effect of FCS, human platelet lysate (hPL), and a fully defined medium on the initiation and maintenance of ASC cultures. ASCs obtained from five donors were cultured in five different media: StemPro, Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) supplemented with 10% hPL, or α‐minimum essential medium (A‐MEM) supplemented with 5% hPL, 10% hPL, or 10% FCS. The effect of media on proliferation, colony‐forming units (CFUs), attachment, and morphology was assessed along with cell size, granularity, and immunophenotype. StemPro greatly compromised the initiation of ASC cultures, which could not survive more than a few passages. Cells cultured in A‐MEM proliferated at a faster rate than in DMEM, and hPL significantly enhanced cell size, granularity, and proliferation compared with FCS. All media except StemPro supported CFUs equally well. Analysis of surface markers revealed higher levels of CD73 and CD105 in FCS‐cultured ASCs, whereas increased levels of CD146 were found in hPL‐cultured cells. Multiparametric flow cytometric analysis performed after seven passages revealed the existence of four distinct ASC subpopulations, all positive for CD73, CD90, and CD105, which mainly differed by their expression of CD146 and CD271. Analysis of the different subpopulations might represent an important biological measure when assessing different medium formulations for a particular clinical application. In most clinical trials using adipose‐derived stem cells (ASCs), the cells have been expanded in culture media supplemented with fetal calf serum. However, there is much interest in replacing fetal calf serum with human platelet lysate or using completely serum‐ and xenogeneic‐free media. This study found that culture in fetal calf serum versus human platelet lysate had a significant effect on the degree of expression of stem cell–associated surface markers. These results underscore the need to carefully investigate the effect of culture media on ASC behavior before committing to one medium type for clinical use. This study compared the effects of different types of media on adipose‐derived stem cell (ASC) cultures. It was found that culture in fetal calf serum versus human platelet lysate had a significant effect on the degree of expression of stem cell‐associated surface markers. These results underscore the need to carefully investigate the effect of culture media on ASC behavior before a medium is selected for clinical use.

This paper addresses dispatch of a microgrid system using nonlinear economic model predictive control. Constraints in the model predictive control formulation are used to ensure that microgrid units stay within their desired operational range (i.e. power output, storage level, and temperature) and that the net energy exchange with the macrogrid over each hour stays within some scheduled bounds. A dynamic, continuous-time microgrid model is developed and used to test this dispatch strategy over a 24-hour period. The proposed dispatch strategy is able to satisfy the bounds on energy exchange and desired temperature.

This paper examines microgrid unit dispatch, with hourly bounds on energy exchange with the macrogrid and minimum storage level constraints. These goals can be used to meet market constraints and to ensure there is sufficient energy reserved for future periods, respectively. In particular, economic model predictive control is used to minimize cost while ensuring these scheduling goals and other operational constraints are satisfied. Simulation of a dynamic microgrid system over a 24-hour period shows that the proposed dispatch strategy is able to effectively reject forecasting errors and meet the established energy exchange and storage level goals.

The paper deals with the protection of wood in wooden building constructions, in accordance to the current trends in the use of organic materials in the construction sector and also in the woodworking industry. The attention is paid to the assessment of the effectiveness of selected retardant protective substances applied to spruce wood that was thermally loaded for prediction of flammability properties and assessing the suitability of their application. In the experiment, there was used the modified testing method with evaluation of the characteristics of thermal degradation. At the same time, there were evaluated selected material characteristics, in relation to the adhesion of retarding coatings applied.

The paper deals with the preparation of new type of progressive polymer blends created from bicomponent synthetic fibres (PP/PA6) with addition of interfacial agent maleine-anhydrid (MAH) and polymeric mixtures with varying content of the polyamide component for the purpose of subsequent production of a highly efficient filters for collection of hazardous chemical (VOC) in processes surface finishing and treatment of wood products. Morphological parameters were studied in relation to the supramolecular structure of the mechanical properties and the specific rheological characteristics in terms of their experimental process of spinning of bicomponent fibres.
