This paper examines whether Chinese manufacturing firms survive longer if they innovate. More particularly, it focuses on whether R&D has a greater effect on firm survival than new product innovations. It compares dichotomous and continuous measures of R&D and innovation output, various duration models, heterogeneity in the effects of innovation depending on the industrial environment, and it examines whether risk modifies the effect of innovation on the hazard rate. The analysis is based on data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China, including over 100,000 firms in each year over the period 1999–2006 from all provinces and manufacturing industries in China. It is found that both R&D and product innovation, be it in terms of incidence or intensities, increase the chance of firm survival. As opposed to previous studies, the results indicate that R&D has a greater marginal effect on survival than innovation output and that various measures of risk actually increase the effect of R&D/innovation on survival.

Nonlinear nanophotonics, as an emerging field in nanophotonics, eagerly calls for experimental techniques for probing and analyzing near-field nonlinear optical signals with subwavelength resolution. Here, we report an aperture-type scanning near-field optical microscopic method for probing near-field nonlinear optical processes. As a demonstration, near-field third-harmonic generation from an anapole dark-mode state generated by a silicon nanodisk is probed and imaged. The measured results agree well with the simulations, with a spatial resolution down to $0.14{\lambda _0}$ and a sensitivity of 0.1 nW. This method provides a powerful tool for characterizing nonlinear light–matter interactions at the nanoscale, which can help, for example, to unveil crystal properties involving subwavelength defects or dislocations.

In this paper, we propose a design of coherent fiber-optics-array collimator (CFAC) that is mainly composed of a single unitary collimating lens and a prism. The CFAC system is presented conceptually, and corresponding parameters are theoretically analyzed using a geometrical optics method. Then, we set up a proof-of-concept experiment to verify the validity of the CFAC system with three coherent fiber lasers distributed along the symmetry axis through the center of the single unitary lens. After that, we realize the synchronous aberrationless collimating of the three beams with only one collimating lens system and their parallel propagation by utilizing a specific prism array. Finally, we successfully achieve a coherent beam combination of the laterally distributed three beams using a single-frequency dithering algorithm. Through an active piston phase control, the residual phase errors among the laser beams are suppressed below λ/26. By comparing the experimental results with the simulation results, we can see that the distribution of the closed-loop far-field intensity pattern detected by the charge-coupled infrared camera basically matches the ideal intensity distribution.

A composite micro/nanostrucutred (MN) surface was designed using poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) polymer in combination with ZnO materials via heat-pattern-transfer and crystal-growth techniques. The surface, composed of ZnO nanohairs over PVDF microratchets (i.e., ZP-MN), displays excellent antifogging and icing-delay properties. Condensed water droplets can be easily shed from the ZP-MN surface at −5 °C for ∼1600 s via a slight wind or tilting. The droplets do not completely freeze on the ZP-MN surface at −10 °C until ∼7360 s. This investigation offers a way to design a structured surface that possesses anti-icing ability, which is significant because it can be extended to fields such as microdevices, engineering systems, and engines that operate in a cold or humid environment.

Within-city ultrafine particle (UFP) concentrations vary sharply since they are influenced by various factors. We developed prediction models for short-term UFP exposures using street-level images collected by a camera installed on a vehicle rooftop, paired with air quality measurements conducted during a large-scale mobile monitoring campaign in Toronto, Canada. Convolutional neural network models were trained to extract traffic and built environment features from images. These features, along with regional air quality and meteorology data were used to predict short-term UFP concentration as a continuous and categorical variable. A gradient boost model for UFP as a continuous variable achieved R2= 0.66 and RMSE = 9391.8#/cm3(mean values for 10-fold cross-validation). The model predicting categorical UFP achieved accuracies for “Low” and “High” UFP of 77 and 70%, respectively. The presence of trucks and other traffic parameters were associated with higher UFPs, and the spatial distribution of elevated short-term UFP followed the distribution of single-unit trucks. This study demonstrates that pictures captured on urban streets, associated with regional air quality and meteorology, can adequately predict short-term UFP exposure. Capturing the spatial distribution of high-frequency short-term UFP spikes in urban areas provides crucial information for the management of near-road air pollution hot spots.

This study investigated the exothermic characteristics of coal during its low-temperature oxidation and determined the main factors affecting the exothermic intensity of the oxidation process. Four coal samples with different degrees of coalification were prepared to study the variation in the exothermic heat of oxidation at temperatures ranging from 25 to 70 °C through constant-temperature coal oxidation experiments. A grey correlation analysis was conducted including the volatile matter, moisture, sulphur content, ash, oxygen concentration, temperature, and exothermic intensity associated with the oxidation of coal. The results showed that the oxygen consumption rate, CO release rate, and CO2release rate of the coal increased exponentially with the increase in the temperature; under the same oxygen concentration and temperature, the above factors were found to be directly proportional to the volatile content of the coal and negatively correlated with the degree of coalification. At constant temperature, the oxidation heat release intensity of the coal was directly proportional to the oxygen concentration; under a constant oxygen concentration, the oxidation heat release intensity of the coal increased exponentially with the increase in the temperature. The relationship between the oxidation heat release intensity of coal, volatile matter, moisture, sulphur content, ash, oxygen concentration, temperature, and oxygen concentration in the temperature range of 25–70 °C was deduced using the grey correlation analysis method. The grey correlations between the volatile matter, moisture, sulphur content, ash, oxygen concentration, and temperature were 0.8349, 0.6206, 0.6555, 0.7645, 0.7477, and 0.5649, respectively. The differences in the intensity of the oxidative exothermic effect of coals with different degrees of coalification were mainly influenced by the volatile content, and the intensity of the oxidative exothermic effect of the same coal was mainly influenced by the oxygen concentration.

In order to explore the detailed structure-activity relationship (SAR) around xanthone scaffold bearing hydroxyl and prenyl moieties, twenty-nine natural and non-natural hydroxylated and prenylated xanthones have been synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro anti-proliferative activities against five human cancer cell lines, including HepG2 (hepatocelluar carcinoma), HCT-116 (colon carcinoma), A549 (lung carcinoma), BGC823 (gastric carcinoma) and MDAMB- 231 (breast carcinoma). The SAR analysis revealed that the anti-proliferative activity of the xanthones is substantially influenced by the position and number of attached hydroxyl and prenyl groups, and the presence of hydroxyl group ortho to the carbonyl function of xanthone scaffold contributes significantly to their cytotoxicity. The new prenylated xanthone 20 with a relatively simple structure, namely 1,3,8-trihydroxy-2-prenylxanthone, was found to exhibit potent antitumor activities comparable to α-mangostin against all the five cancer cell lines. Further mechanistic studies suggested that compound 20 induces apoptosis and causes cell cycle arrest at S phase in HepG2 cells. These results have highlighted compound 20 as a new potential lead candidate for future development of novel potent broad-spectrum antitumor agents.

We design and demonstrate experimentally a plasmonic directional beaming device with an expected beam angle, which consists of a slit-grooves structure in Au/Cr metal layers. The directional beaming phenomenon is achieved by modulating the phases of the radiation light diffracted by grooves from surface plasmon polariton and controlling the wavefront of the transmitted light to propagate toward the desired direction. The transmitted field through the demonstration beaming device is simulated with finite-difference time-domain method and visualized using scanning near-field optical microscope. The simulation and experimental results both show a significant directional beaming effect and are in good agreement with theoretical expectation. Such a plasmonic beaming device has potential applications in optical interconnection, display, and illumination.

Abstract: Raman spectroscopy is a powerful technique in chemical information characterization. However, this spectral method is subject to two obstacles in nano-material detection. One is diffraction limited spatial resolution, and the other is its inherent small Raman cross section and weak signaling. To resolve these problems, a new approach has been developed, denoted as tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). TERS is capable of high-resolution and high-sensitivity detection and demonstrated to be a promising spectroscopic and micro-topographic method to characterize nano-materials and nanostructures. In this paper, the principle and experimental system of TERS are discussed. The latest application of TERS in molecule detection, biological specimen identification, nanao-material characterization, and semi-conductor material determination with some specific experimental examples are presented.

Abstract: Scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) is an ideal experimental measuring system in nano-optical measurements and characterizations. Besides microscopy with resolution beyond the diffraction limit, spectroscope with nanometer resolution and other instruments with novel performances have been indispensable for researches in nano-optics and nanophotonics. This paper reviews the developing history of near-field optical (NFO) measuring method and foresees its prospects in future. The development of NFO measurements has gone through four stages, including optical imaging with super resolution, near-field spectroscopy, measurements of nanooptical parameters, and detections of near-field interactions. For every stage, research objectives, technological properties and application fields are discussed.

A high-density dielectric rectangular grating is designed for color separation in a Fresnel diffraction field. The Fresnel field distribution is analyzed and the optimization conditions for color separation are given. The process of the modes propagating and energy exchanging with the diffraction orders are expressed by modal method. The color separation for different polarizations can be realized. The energy efficiency is 96.3% at the 633 nm wavelength and 86.9% at the 488 mm wavelength for both TE polarizations, while the energy efficiency is theoretically 96.3% at the 633 nm wavelength for TE polarization and 90.6% at the 488 nm wavelength for TM polarization. The field distributions are scanned by the near-field scanning optical microscopy, and the efficiency is 71.2% for the 633 nm wavelength and 67.3% for the 488 nm wavelength for both TE polarizations experimentally.

We developed a tip-enhanced Raman spectrometer (TERS) with reflection mode. The instrument, with a scanning shear-force microscope (ShFM) and a side-illumination Raman spectroscope, can overcome the diffraction limit and has high sensitivity. A chemical method to fabricate optical fiber probes with Ag coating is proposed. The local electromagnetic responses of the silver-coated optical fiber probe are numerically analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain method, and the excitation wavelength is optimized to resonate with the localized surface plasmons (LSP) of the probe tip. The instrument is applied to investigate a single multiwall carbon nanotube. The experiment results indicate that our TERS instrument has a spatial resolution better than 70 nm, and the enhancement factor is about 5×10^3.

Summary: Linear low density polyethylene/maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene/montmorillonite clay (LLDPE/PEMA/clay) nanocomposites prepared using a co-rotating twin screw extruder exhibit unique thermal, rheological, and mechanical behaviors. All the mechanical properties including ductility increase with clay loading. X‐ray diffraction analysis and TEM images reveal an intercalated clay structure for the LLDPE/PEMA/clay composite with 5% clay and an exfoliated structure for that with 2% clay. Differential scanning calorimetry shows that the addition of PEMA does not influence the melting temperature but favors the formation of more thin lamellas. Rheological characterization indicates that the LLDPE‐PEMA blend has similar rheological behavior to neat LLDPE, implying the two polymers are completely miscible. The composites exhibit significantly higher storage and loss modulus and complex viscosity at low frequencies, and the magnitude of all these properties increases with clay loading. Furthermore, the slopes of G′, G″, and complex viscosity versus frequency are similar for the composites of different phase morphologies, suggesting that the rheological behaviors of the composites depends more on clay loading than phase morphology. The enhanced miscibility between LLDPE and PEMA, and more importantly, interfacial interaction between clay, PEMA, and LLDPE, are responsible for the distinct improvement in all the mechanical properties of the composite, and in particular for the marked improvement in ductility.Stress-strain diagram for LLDPE, LLDPE/PEMA, and LLDPE/PEME‐clay nanocomposites.

A new technique for characterization of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is presented in this report. The molecular structure of two commercial LLDPEs, produced by copolymerization of ethylene with 1-butene over a Ziegler-Natta and a metallocene catalyst, was investigated. The LLDPE resins were fractionated by temperature rising elution fractionation (TREF), and the TREF fractions were further analyzed by size exclusion chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) coupled with successive nucleation/annealing (SNA). The cross-fractionation techniques provided detailed information about the molecular structure of different types of LLDPEs; of particular interest is the TREF-SNA-DSC cross-fractionation which allowed a direct observation of methylene sequence distribution and thus short chain branch (SCB) distribution. TREF-size exclusion chromatography cross-fractionation showed that the molar mass of the Ziegler-Natta LLDPE increased monotonically with decreasing SCB, whereas the plot of Mw vs SCB for the metallocene LLDPE showed a maximum. TREF-SNA-DSC cross-fractionation clearly showed that the metallocene LLDPE only had intramolecular heterogeneity in SCB distribution, whereas the Ziegler-Natta LLDPEs exhibited both intermolecular and intramolecular heterogeneity. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
