The downward shortwave radiation (DSR) is an important part of the Earth’s energy balance, driving Earth’s system’s energy, water, and carbon cycles. Due to the harsh Antarctic environment, the accuracy of DSR derived from satellite and reanalysis has not been systematically evaluated over the transect of Zhongshan station to Dome A, East Antarctica. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate DSR reanalysis products (ERA5-Land, ERA5, MERRA-2) and satellite products (CERES and ICDR) in this area. The results indicate that DSR exhibits obvious monthly and seasonal variations, with higher values in summer than in winter. The ERA5-Land (ICDR) DSR product demonstrated the highest (lowest) accuracy, as evidenced by a correlation coefficient of 0.988 (0.918), a root-mean-square error of 23.919 (69.383) W m−2, a mean bias of −1.667 (−28.223) W m−2and a mean absolute error of 13.37 (58.99) W m−2. The RMSE values for the ERA5-Land reanalysis product at seven stations, namely Zhongshan, Panda 100, Panda 300, Panda 400, Taishan, Panda 1100, and Kunlun, were 30.938, 29.447, 34.507, 29.110, 20.339, 17.267, and 14.700 W m−2, respectively; with corresponding bias values of 9.887, −12.159, −19.181, −15.519, −8.118, 6.297, and 3.482 W m−2. Regarding seasonality, ERA5-Land, ERA5, and MERRA-2 reanalysis products demonstrate higher accuracies during spring and summer, while ICDR products are least accurate in autumn. Cloud cover, water vapor, total ozone, and severe weather are the main factors affecting DSR. The error of DSR products is greatest in coastal areas (particularly at the Zhongshan station) and decreases towards the inland areas of Antarctica.

Aluminium sulfate was combined with the raw material pretreatment in a fluidized-bed reactor to reduce the phosphorite by coal, so as to improve the separation of P 2 from phosphorite. The optimum reaction conditions for phosphorite reduction in a fluidized bed is found to be 1523 K, 40 min, Si/Ca mole ratio of 2, carbon excess coefficient of 1.6, and nitrogen flow of 0.11 m⋅s−1. Sensitivity analysis reveals that the five influencing factors on the conversion ratio of phosphorite, in descending order of importance, are the reaction temperature, the nitrogen flow, the reaction time, and the excess of carbon and the mole ratio of Si/Ca. The influence of adding aluminium sulfate on the reaction system and pretreating the raw material was investigated. The results show that by speeding up defluorination while decreasing the activation energy, adding aluminium sulfate and pretreatment could improve the conversion ratio of phosphorite by about 10 %. Bone nonunion poses an urgent clinical challenge that needs to be addressed. Recent studies have revealed that the metabolic microenvironment plays a vital role in fracture healing. Macrophages and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs) are important targets for therapeutic interventions in bone fractures. Itaconate is a TCA cycle metabolite that has emerged as a potent macrophage immunomodulator that limits the inflammatory response. During osteogenic differentiation, BMSCs tend to undergo aerobic glycolysis and metabolize glucose to lactate. Copper ion (Cu2+) is an essential trace element that participates in glucose metabolism and may stimulate glycolysis in BMSCs and promote osteogenesis. In this study, we develop a 4-octyl itaconate (4-OI)@Cu@Gel nanocomposite hydrogel that can effectively deliver and release 4-OI and Cu2+to modulate the metabolic microenvironment and improve the functions of cells involved in the fracture healing process. The findings reveal that burst release of 4-OI reduces the inflammatory response, promotes M2 macrophage polarization, and alleviates oxidative stress, while sustained release of Cu2+stimulates BMSC glycolysis and osteogenic differentiation and enhances endothelial cell angiogenesis. Consequently, the 4-OI@Cu@Gel system achieves rapid fracture healing in mice. Thus, this study proposes a promising regenerative strategy to expedite bone fracture healing through metabolic reprogramming of macrophages and BMSCs.

Compared with the conventional tool (CT), the micro-textured tool (MTT) has the advantages of reducing cutting forces, lowering cutting temperatures and inhibiting tool wear. However, the chip scraping phenomenon generated in the cutting process has negative effects and degrades cutting performance when using the MTT with grooves perpendicular to the cutting edge. Due to the difficulty in observing and characterizing chip scraping in situ by experiments, its mechanism and influence on specific cutting forces and tool wear are not fully understood. To this end, finite element (FE) method is employed for simulating the cutting process with MTT. The simulation model is validated by comparing the predicted and measured specific cutting forces. The average prediction error of specific cutting and feed forces is 12.4 % and 18.8 %, respectively. The simulation results indicate that chip scraping mainly results from the discontinuity, non-uniformity and high contact stress state of the tool-chip interface. The minimum specific cutting force is achieved when the advantages of micro-texture and the chip scraping effects are balanced. The MTT rake face wear is subdivided into a severe and a sliding wear zone. This partition characteristic is closely associated with normal contact stress and temperature distributions. The work in this paper contributes to improving the understanding of chip scraping, optimizing micro-texture and cutting parameters, and promoting MTT applications in the manufacturing industry.

The aggregation of specific proteins is a histopathological hallmark in various neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), among which Alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) and tau have received increased attention. The targeted protein degradation (TPD) strategy has been studied in the treatment of NDs, but multitarget bifunctional molecules have been ignored. Herein, a series of effective dual PROTAC degraders were developed, which could degrade α-Syn aggregates and total tau simultaneously. The degradation effects were evaluated in vitro, and the results showed that T3could significantly knockdown α-Syn aggregates and total tau in the degradation efficiency with DC50of 1.57 ± 0.55 and 4.09 ± 0.90 μM, respectively. Further mechanistic exploration showed that the degradation effect was mediated by the ubiquitin–proteasome system (UPS). Additionally, the therapeutic efficacy of T3was confirmed in an MPTP-induced PD mouse model. Our results suggest that these dual PROTACs may provide a potential therapeutic strategy for NDs.

In transfusion medicine, the cryopreservation of red blood cells (RBCs) is of major importance. The organic solvent glycerol (Gly) is considered the current gold-standard cryoprotectant (CPA) for RBC cryopreservation, but the deglycerolization procedure is complex and time-consuming, resulting in severe hemolysis. Therefore, it remains a research hotspot to find biocompatible and effective novel CPAs. Herein, the natural and biocompatible inulin, a polysaccharide, was first employed as a CPA for RBC cryopreservation. The presence of inulin could improve the thawed RBC recovery from 11.83 ± 1.40 to 81.86 ± 0.37%. It was found that inulin could promote vitrification because of its relatively high viscosity and glass transition temperature (Tg′), thus reducing the damage during cryopreservation. Inulin possessed membrane stability, which also had beneficial effects on RBC recovery. Moreover, inulin could inhibit the mechanical damage induced by ice recrystallization during thawing. After cryopreservation, the RBC properties were maintained normally. Mathematical modeling analysis was adopted to compare the performance of inulin, Gly, and hydroxyethyl starch (HES) in cryopreservation, and inulin presented the best efficiency. This work provides a promising CPA for RBC cryopreservation and may be beneficial for transfusion therapy in the clinic.

Tocotrienols and tocopherols (vitamin E) are potent antioxidants that are synthesized in green plants. Unlike ubiquitous tocopherols, tocotrienols predominantly accumulate in the endosperm of monocot grains, catalyzed by homogentiate geranylgeranyl transferase (HGGT). Previously, we generated a tocotrienol-deficient hvhggtmutant with shrunken barley grains. However, the relationship between tocotrienols and grain development remains unclear. Here, we found that the hvhggtlines displayed hollow endosperms with defective transfer cells and reduced aleurone layers. The carbohydrate and starch contents of the hvhggtendosperm decreased by approximately 20 and 23%, respectively. Weighted gene coexpression network analyses identified a critical gene module containing HvHGGT, which was strongly associated with the hvhggtmutation and enriched with gene functions in starch and sucrose metabolism. Metabolome measurements revealed an elevated soluble sugar content in the hvhggtendosperm, which was significantly associated with the identified gene modules. The hvhggtendosperm had significantly higher NAD(H) and NADP(H) contents and lower levels of ADPGlc (regulated by redox balance) than the wild-type, consistent with the absence of tocotrienols. Interestingly, exogenous α-tocotrienol spraying on developing hvhggtspikes partially rescued starch accumulation and endosperm defects. Our study supports a potential novel function of tocotrienols in grain starch accumulation and endosperm development in monocot crops.

ABSTRACTA growing number of studies have shown that melatonin is a potent agonist of SIRT3 (sirtuin 3) and effectively protects mitochondria, suggesting melatonin as a promising therapeutic drug to treat sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (SAKI). In this study, we first included 48 sepsis patients for cross-sectional analysis and the result revealed that plasma melatonin levels are inversely proportional to the mitochondrial injury of renal tubular epithelial cells and directly proportional to the acute kidney injury recovery in sepsis patients. We further explored the effects of exogenous melatonin on SAKI and its mechanism in animal model of cecal ligation and puncture-treated mice, and cellular model of LPS-challenged HK-2 cells. The results demonstrate that the protective effect of melatonin on the progression of SAKI depends on SIRT3 activation as well as mitophagic flux. Mechanistically, TFAM (transcription factor A, mitochondrial)-K154 site deacetylation via SIRT3 is indispensable for melatonin-enhanced mitophagic flux on SAKI. The surface characteristics play a pivotal role in stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance and fatigue life. Strengthening and modifying the material surface properties during manufacturing is a promising approach to improving the component service performance. Therefore, this study proposes a new surface finishing and strengthening mode that combines turning with slide burnishing (TSB) with a common turning tool. The core idea is that the cutting edge of the tool removes the material surface layer as a chip while the tool corner with a large radius performs a slide burnishing process on the manufactured surface. The machining-induced surface integrity in terms of residual stress, surface roughness, micro-hardness and microstructure changes was examined, and the SCC susceptibility was tested in a strong corrosion environment. The results showed that the surfaces processed by TSB suffered lower biaxial residual stresses, higher micro-hardness and deeper hardened layer when compared with the traditional turned surfaces. Besides, it was observed the TSB processed surfaces were less susceptible to SCC initiation which could be attributed to the lower residual stress introduced by TSB. Additionally, the multi-pass TSB treated surfaces showed significant low SCC susceptibility. Consequently, this work suggests that the surface integrity and the service performance like SCC resistance can be improved by TSB.

The diabetic wounds remain to be unsettled clinically, with chronic wounds characterized by drug-resistant bacterial infections, compromised angiogenesis and oxidative damage to the microenvironment. To ameliorate oxidative stress and applying antioxidant treatment in the wound site, we explore the function of folliculin-interacting protein 1 (FNIP1), a mitochondrial gatekeeper protein works to alter mitochondrial morphology, reduce oxidative phosphorylation and protect cells from unwarranted ROS accumulation. And our in vitroexperiments showed the effects of FNIP1 in ameliorating oxidative stress and rescued impaired angiogenesis of HUVECs in high glucose environment. To realize the drug delivery and local regulation of FNIP1 in diabetic wound sites, a novel designed glucose-responsive HA-PBA-FA/EN106 hydrogel is introduced for improving diabetic wound healing. Due to the dynamic phenylboronate ester structure with a phenylboronic acid group between hyaluronic acid (HA) and phenylboronic acid (PBA), the hydrogel is able to realize a glucose-responsive release of drugs. Fulvic acid (FA) is added in the hydrogel, which not only severs as crosslinking agent but also provides antibacterial and anti-inflammatory abilities. Moreover, the release of FEM1b-FNIP1 axis inhibitor EN106 ameliorated oxidative stress and stimulated angiogenesis through FEM1b-FNIP1 axis regulation. These in vivoand in vitroresults demonstrated that accelerated diabetic wounds repair with the use of the HA-PBA-FA/EN106 hydrogel, which may provide a promising strategy for chronic diabetic wound repair.

Targeted protein degradation (TPD) confers knockdown of “undruggable” targets such as alpha-synuclein (αSyn), a pathogenic protein in multiple neurodegenerative diseases. Though many of these proteins were mainly degraded through the autophagy-lysosome pathway (ALP), few TPD tools harnessing the ALP were reported. Herein, we developed a strategy termed autophagosome-anchoring chimera (ATACC), in which the protein of interest (POI) can be anchored to microtubule-associated protein-1 light chain-3B (LC3B) on the autophagosome with the assistance of an LC3-interacting region (LIR)-containing bifunctional peptide, and the selective autophagy of the POI is thus facilitated. A series of αSyn-targeting ATACC peptides were designed and synthesized. Biological evaluations demonstrated that these compounds could degrade αSyn specifically and effectively through a “chemical-induced cargo recognition–ALP degradation” mechanism. The neuroprotective effects of ATACC peptide P1were further validated in vitro and in vivo. Collectively, our results provided a new TPD tool and revealed a potential therapeutic strategy against synucleinopathies.

The clinical applications of currently used photosensitizers are limited by high costs, inconvenient preparation, suboptimal biodegradability, and a lack of biological activity. Humic acids (HAs) show photothermal activity and can be used as a photosensitizer for photothermal therapy. In the presence of various functional groups, HAs are endowed with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. The solubility of HAs is dependent on the pH value, which is soluble in neutral to alkaline conditions and undergoes a conformational change to a coiled and compact structure in acidic conditions. Additionally, Cu2+is an emerging therapeutic agent for cutaneous wounds and can be chelated by HAs to form complexes. In this study, we explore the ability of HAs to modulate the inflammatory response, particularly macrophage polarization, and the potential underlying mechanism. We fabricate a near-infrared (NIR)/pH dual-responsive Cu-HAs nanoparticle (NP)-based poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel film loaded with SEW2871 (SEW), a macrophage recruitment agent, to treat bacteria-infected cutaneous wounds. The results show that HAs could promote M2 macrophage polarization in a dose-dependent manner. The Cu-HAs NPs successfully eradicated bacterial infection through NIR-induced local hyperthermia. This PVA@Cu-HAs NPs@SEW hydrogel film improves tissue regeneration by promoting M2 macrophage polarization, alleviating oxidative stress, enhancing angiogenesis, and facilitating collagen deposition. These findings highlight the therapeutic potential of PVA@Cu-HAs NPs@SEW hydrogel film for the treatment of bacterially infected cutaneous wound healing.

The world’s coral reefs are threatened by the cumulative impacts of global climate change and local stressors. Driven largely by a desire to understand the interactions between corals and their symbiotic microorganisms, and to use this knowledge to eventually improve coral health, interest in coral microbiology and the coral microbiome has increased in recent years. In this review, we summarize the role of the coral microbiome in maintaining a healthy metaorganism by providing nutrients, support for growth and development, protection against pathogens, and mitigation of environmental stressors. We explore the concept of coral microbiome engineering, that is, precise and controlled manipulation of the coral microbiome to aid and enhance coral resilience and tolerance in the changing oceans. Although coral microbiome engineering is clearly in its infancy, several recent breakthroughs indicate that such engineering is an effective tool for restoration and preservation of these valuable ecosystems. To assist with identifying future research targets, we have reviewed the common principles of microbiome engineering and its applications in improving human health and agricultural productivity, drawing parallels to where coral microbiome engineering can advance in the not-too-distant future. Finally, we end by discussing the challenges faced by researchers and practitioners in the application of microbiome engineering in coral reefs and provide recommendations for future work.

Correlation between machined surface alterations and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of austenitic stainless steels is investigated. The machining-induced residual stress, roughness, micro-hardness and dislocation density were characterized and the surface/subsurface cracks were examined after SCC tests in boiling magnesium chloride solution. The results showed SCC crack initiation and early propagation were highly related to the machining-induced alterations. By establishing a quantitative relationship between the surface characteristics and surface crack density, the comprehensive impact of the residual stress, surface roughness as well as the dislocation density on SCC susceptibility is revealed. The predicted crack density is in good agreement with the measured data. As a result, the SCC susceptibility of the machined surface is described by the surface integrity properties.

The constitutive model plays a decisive role in the accuracy and reliability of the simulation results. Because the material flow characteristics obtained by the traditional experimental method are difficult to describe thermoplastic deformation behavior in the cutting process accurately, and the inverse identification is usually carried out based on a two-dimensional orthogonal cutting model, ignoring the actual cutting state, which leads to significant deviations in the results of parameter identification. Therefore, a three-dimensional (3-D) turning finite element simplified model which conforms to the actual cutting scenario was established. Based on this model, a coupling simulation was used to inverse identify the Johnson-Cook (J-C) parameters for turning 304 stainless steel. Firstly, the automatic finite element modeling and calculation of 3-D turning is implemented by Python. Then, the inverse identification framework was built based on the ISIGHT. The initial yield strength of J-C parameters was obtained from quasi-static compression experiments. With the objective function of minimizing the error between the experimental cutting force and the simulated cutting force, the inverse identification of J-C parameters (strain reinforcement factor, strain rate sensitivity, thermal softening index, and hardening index) was carried out by a multi-island genetic algorithm. Finally, compared with cutting forces, chip morphology, and residual stresses, the feasibility of the inverse identification method and the accuracy of the constitutive model is demonstrated, which also provides a reference for the optimal identification method of constitutive parameters of difficult-to-machine materials.

Integrating the blockchain technology into mobile-edge computing (MEC) networks with multiple cooperative MEC servers (MECS) providing a promising solution to improving resource utilization, and helping establish a secure reward mechanism that can facilitate load balancing among MECS. In addition, intelligent management of service caching and load balancing can improve the network utility in MEC blockchain networks with multiple types of workloads. In this paper, we investigate a learning-based joint service caching and load balancing policy for optimizing the communication and computation resources allocation, so as to improve the resource utilization of MEC blockchain networks. We formulate the problem as a challenging long-term network revenue maximization Markov decision process (MDP) problem. To address the highly dynamic and high dimension of system states, we design a joint service caching and load balancing algorithm based on the double-dueling Deep Q network (DQN) approach. The simulation results validate the feasibility and superior performance of our proposed algorithm over several baseline schemes.

In this study, fluorescent red-carbon quantum dots (R-CQDs) with an ultrahigh fluorescence quantum yield of 45% were rapidly and easily synthesized by thermal pyrolysis of 2,5-diaminotoluene sulfate and 4-hydroxyethylpiperazineethanesulfonic acid using a one-step microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach. R-CQDs possessed the excitation-independent fluorescence property with the optimal emission peak at 607 nm under the excitation wavelength of 585 nm. R-CQDs exhibited excellent fluorescence stability under extremely harsh conditions in a pH range of 2–11, high ionic strength (1.8 M of NaCl), and long UV light irradiation time (160 min). The fluorescence quantum yield of these R-CQDs was as high as 45%, implying their preferable application in chemosensors and biological analysis. Because Fe3+ion bound with R-CQDs and statically quenched the fluorescence of R-CQDs, the fluorescence intensity of R-CQDs was recovered after the addition of ascorbic acid (AA) viaits redox reaction with Fe3+ion. R-CQDs were developed as highly sensitive fluorescent on–off–on probes for sequentially sensing Fe3+ions and AA. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the linear range for Fe3+ion detection was 1–70 μM with a detection limit of 0.28 μM, and the linear range for AA detection was 1–50 μM with a detection limit of 0.42 μM. The successful detection of Fe3+ions in authentic water samples and the successful sensing of AA in human body fluids and vitamin C tablets further proved the practical application prospects of this efficient strategy in the environmental protection and disease diagnosis fields.

This paper proposes a novel adaptive fixed-time fault-tolerant control method for the fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) subject to asymmetric time-varying full state constraints. The UAV nonlinear dynamics of six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) with twelve-state-variables is considered in this article, rather than only longitudinal/lateral or attitude dynamics in most existing results. A novel Integral Barrier Lyapunov Function (IBLF) is applied for the first time to solve the control problem of the UAV with the asymmetric time-varying full state constraints, which reduces the conservativeness of the conventional IBLF-based method. Furthermore, a continuous switching function is introduced to solve the singularity problem which typically appears in the fixed-time control methods when tracking errors approach to zero. It is rigorously proved that all the states are forced in the asymmetric time-varying bounds and the tracking errors of velocity and attitude converge to a residual set around origin within fixed time. Finally, the simulation results are given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Memory B cells (MBCs) are essential for humoral immunological memory and can emerge during both the pre-germinal center (GC) and GC phases. However, the transcription regulators governing MBC development remain poorly understood. Here, we report that the transcription regulator Notch2 is highly expressed in MBCs and their precursors at the pre-GC stage and required for MBC development without influencing the fate of GC and plasma cells. Mechanistically, Notch2 signaling promotes the expression of complement receptor CD21 and augments B cell receptor (BCR) signaling. Reciprocally, BCR activation up-regulates Notch2 surface expression in activated B cells via a translation-dependent mechanism. Intriguingly, Notch2 is dispensable for GC-derived MBC formation. In summary, our findings establish Notch2 as a pivotal transcription regulator orchestrating MBC development through the reciprocal enforcement of BCR signaling during the pre-GC phase and suggest that the generation of GC-independent and -dependent MBCs is governed by distinct transcriptional mechanisms.

Solder balls used in electronic packaging should have high dimensional and shape accuracy requirements to ensure the connection quality of solder balls during soldering. However, the existing solder ball detection methods were hard to measure the diameter and roundness in an integrated and fast manner. Therefore, a new method and device for measuring the diameter and roundness of solder balls was proposed based on machine vision technology, including detection device and software design. The experimental device could detect the parameters of at least 40 solder balls at a time. The solder ball image was preprocessed in the software system to improve the quality of the solder ball image, and then the Harris operator successfully detected the concave point on the bonded solder ball image and realized the solder ball separation based on the shortest path matching criterion. Compared with the scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurement value, the diameter and roundness of solder balls measured by the detection system were smaller than 3%.

Primary autosomal recessive microcephaly 5 (MCPH5) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder with a relatively high incidence in regions where consanguineous marriage is widely practiced; So far, only a few MCPH5 cases have been reported from China. Here, we report clinical and molecular characteristics of two Chinese MCPH5 patients, a 24-year-old woman proband and her brother, a 19-year-old man, from a nonconsanguineous family. Main manifestations in the proband were small head circumference, premature closure of fontanelles, impaired concentration and moderate intellectual disability. The proband’s brother had similar symptoms, but he was hyperactive and had a more severe sloping forehead. Brain imaging revealed global reduction in brain size, especially in the frontal lobes bilaterally and anterior horns of lateral ventricles. Sequencing results revealed that both patients carried a novel nonsense variant p.Tyr2004* (c.6012_6013delTA) and a novel frameshift variant p.Arg2005Serfs*48 (c.6015_6016delGG) in the ASPMgene. These variants were interpreted to be pathogenic in the in-silico analysis. Our findings help to expand the mutation spectrum of ASPMand provide new opportunities for assisting the traditional clinical diagnosis on the cases with atypical characteristics.

It has been reported that multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) can reportedly positively affect growth and differentiation of bone-related cells and therefore offer great potential in biomedical applications. To overcome negative immune responses that limit their application, specific doping and functionalization can improve their biocompatibility. Here, we demonstrated that nitrogen-doped carboxylate-functionalized MWCNTs (N-MWCNTs) enhance bone remodeling both in vitroand in vivowith excellent biocompatibility, via stimulation of both bone resorption and formation. We revealed that 0.2 μg/mL N-MWCNTs not only increase the transcription of osteoblastogenic and osteoclastogenic genes but also up-regulate the activities of both TRAP and AKP in the differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). Additionally, intramuscular administration of N-MWCNTs at a dosage of 1.0 mg/kg body weight enhances bone mineral density and bone mass content in mice, as well as induces potentiated degree of TRAP- and ARS-positive staining in the femur. The positive regulation of N-MWCNTs on bone remodeling is initiated by macrophage phagocytosis, which induces altered production of inflammatory cytokines by immune response pathways, and consequently up-regulates IL1α, IL10, and IL16. These cytokines collectively regulate the central osteoclastogenic transcription factor NFATc1 and osteoblastogenic BMP signaling, the suppression of which confirmed that these factors respectively participate in N-MWCNT-mediated regulation of osteoclastic and osteoblastic bone marrow stem cell activities. These results suggest that N-MWCNTs can be readily generalized for use as biomaterials in bone tissue engineering for metabolic bone disorders.

Per‐ and poly‐fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are interfacially‐active contaminants that adsorb at air‐water interfaces (AWIs). Water‐unsaturated soils have abundant AWIs, which generally consist of two types: one is associated with the pendular rings of water between soil grains (i.e., bulk AWI) and the other arises from the thin water films covering the soil grains. To date, the two types of AWIs have been treated the same when modeling PFAS retention in vadose zones. However, the presence of electrical double layers of soil grain surfaces and the subsequently modified chemical potential of PFAS at the AWI may significantly change the PFAS adsorption at the thin‐water‐film AWI relative to that at the bulk AWI. Given that thin water films contribute to over 90% of AWIs in the vadose zone under many field‐relevant wetting conditions, it is critical to quantify the potential anomalous adsorption of PFAS at the thin‐water‐film AWI. We develop a thermodynamic‐based mathematical model to quantify this anomalous adsorption. The model couples the chemical equilibrium of PFAS with the Poisson‐Boltzmann equation that governs the distribution of electrical potential in a thin water film. Our model analyses suggest that PFAS adsorption at thin‐water‐film AWI can deviate significantly (up to 82%) from that at bulk AWIs. The deviation increases for lower porewater ionic strength, thinner water film, and higher soil grain surface charge. These results highlight the importance of accounting for the anomalous adsorption of PFAS at the thin‐water‐film AWI when modeling PFAS fate and transport in the vadose zone. Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is an important indicator for photochemical pollution, formed similar to ozone in the photochemistry of certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of nitrogen oxides, and has displayed surprisingly high concentrations during wintertime that were better correlated to particulate rather than ozone concentrations, for which the reasons remained unknown. In this study, wintertime observations of PAN, VOCs, PM2.5, HONO, and various trace gases were investigated to find the relationship between aerosols and wintertime PAN formation. Wintertime photochemical pollution was affirmed by the high PAN concentrations (average: 1.2 ± 1.1 ppb, maximum: 7.1 ppb), despite low ozone concentrations. PAN concentrations were determined by its oxygenated VOC (OVOC) precursor concentrations and the NO/NO2ratios and can be well parameterized based on the understanding of their chemical relationship. Data analysis and box modeling results suggest that PAN formation was mostly contributed by VOC aging processes involving OH oxidation or photolysis rather than ozonolysis pathways. Heterogeneous reactions on aerosols have supplied key photochemical oxidants such as HONO, which produced OH radicals upon photolysis, promoting OVOC formation and thereby enhancing PAN production, explaining the observed PM2.5–OVOC–PAN intercorrelation. In turn, parts of these OVOCs might participate in the formation of secondary organic aerosol, further aggravating haze pollution as a feedback. Low wintertime temperatures enable the long-range transport of PAN to downwind regions, and how that will impact their oxidation capacity and photochemical pollution requires further assessment in future studies.

Gaseous nitrous acid (HONO) is a crucial precursor of the hydroxyl (OH) radical, which is a “detergent” in the atmosphere. Nowadays, HONO formation mechanisms at polluted urban areas are controversial, which restricts the understanding of atmospheric oxidative capacity and radical cycling. Herein, multiday vertical observation of HONO and NOxwas simultaneously performed at three heights at the urban area of Beijing for the first time. The vertical distribution of HONO was often unexpected, and it had the highest HONO concentration at 120 m, followed by those at 8 and 240 m. 0D box model simulations suggest that ground and aerosol surfaces might play similar roles in NO2conversion at 8 m during the whole measurement. NO2conversion on aerosol surfaces was the most important HONO source aloft during haze days. At daytime, a strong missing HONO source unexpectedly existed in the urban aloft, and it was relevant to solar radiation and consumed OH.

Aging has become a worldwide problem. During this process, the incidence of related diseases such as diabetes and atherosclerosis increases dramatically. Studies within the most recent two decades suggest a pivotal role of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) in the aging process. This review aims to systemically summarize the effects and potential mechanism of Chinese Medicines on inhibiting AGEs-related aging diseases.

Fault detection is considered a significant and urgent issue in industrial processes. However, faults rarely occur, resulting in an imbalance between normal data and fault data. This paper presents a novel fault-detection model based on wavelet packet decomposition and a bilayer convolutional neural network (WPD-biCNN) within imbalanced data conditions. WPD helps eliminate the adverse impact of data scarcity by mining information in multiple frequency domains rather than generating new data. More rich information in various time and frequency scales is obtained from collected fault samples, which increases the fault information and can help address the imbalance. The improved bilayer convolutional neural network combining local and full convolution stages is employed to extract features and detect fault. The experimental results of an actual polyethylene production process reveal that the proposed method achieves effective performance in the fault detection of agglomeration. In particular, the proposed method exhibits an excellent classification ability for imbalanced data sets with less fault data and more normal data.

A new formulation of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) bone cement with controllable hydration was developed by employing an internal polymeric gel network. Conjunction of two Ca-chelating agents, sodium alginate (SA), and chitosan (CS), induced the rapid generation of an alginate–chitosan gel system within the cement. It provided a cohesive force for the cement paste and encouraged formation of new products comprising octacalcium phosphate and brushite with high biodegradability and osteoconductivity. Because of the synergistic effect of SA and CS, a good balance of handling and mechanical properties of the cements was optimized. This formulation of α-TCP cement can be applied for developing bone cements for clinical potentials.

Highly efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are essential for sustainable hydrogen energy. The controllable production of hydrogen energy by water decomposition depends heavily on the catalyst, and it is extremely important to seek sustainable and highly efficient water-splitting electrocatalysts for energy applications. Herein, bimetallic RuYO2−xnanoparticles (Ru: 8.84 at.% and Y: 13 at.%) with high densities and low loadings were synthesized and anchored on graphene through a simple solvothermal strategy by synthesizing hydrogen yttrium ketone (HxYO2−x) serving as an inserted medium. Electron microscopy demonstrated that the RuYO2−x/C was composed of densely arranged particles and graphene flakes. Electrochemical results showed that the RuYO2−x/C had a remarkably low overpotential of η10= 56 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2in alkaline media, a Tafel slope of 63.18 mV dec−1, and 24 h of stability. The oxygen vacancies of RuYO2−x/C provided a large proton storage capacity and a strong tendency to bind hydrogen atoms. DFT calculations showed that RuYO2−x/C catalysts with more Ru-O-Y bonds and VOdramatically decreased the energy barrier for breaking H-OH bonds. Moreover, the robust metal-support interactions provided optimized energies for hydrogen adsorption and desorption, which explained the high activity and favorable kinetics for RuYO2−x/C catalytic hydrogen precipitation in alkaline electrolyte reactions. This work presents a hydrogen insertion method for the preparation of low-loading, high-density, high-performance and stable water decomposition catalysts for hydrogen production.
