Six new complexes [Mn8(μ4-O)4(phpz)8(MeOH)4]·(MeOH)(H2O) (1) [Co2(HphpzH)(Hphpz)2(phpz)2]·4(MeOH) (2), Ni(Hphpz)2(3), [Ni(Hphpz)2]·H2O (4), [Zn4(pzpy)4Cl4] (5) and [Cu2(pzpy)2(HCO2)2(H2O)2] (6) have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions of MCl2·4H2O (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Zn or Cu) with 5-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-pyrazole (HphpzH) or 2-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine (Hpzpy). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1is an octanuclear Mn(III) cluster, complexes 2and 6are binuclear Co(III) and Cu(II), respectively, complexes 3and 4are isomorphous mononuclear species, while complex 5is a tetranuclear Zn(II) cluster. The magnetic behavior of complex 1was investigated. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the metal centers in the clusters. The luminescence properties of the complexes were investigated at room temperature in the solid state.

A series of fluorescent imidazolium‐based salts containing the cation [AnCH2MeIm]+(in which An=anthracene and Im=the imidazolium cation) with Cl−, BF4−, PF6−, SO3CF3−, [N(CN)2]−, [N(SO2CF3)2]−, or PhBF3−anions have been prepared and characterized. X‐ray diffraction analysis of four of the salts reveals a number of CH⋅⋅⋅X‐type (X=O, N, F) hydrogen bonds between the hydrogen atoms from the imidazolium ring and in some cases from the anthracene ring with the electronegative atoms of the anions. Additionally, CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions can be found in all the salts analyzed by X‐ray diffraction, whereas π–π stacking is observed only in the salt containing the phenyltrifluoroborate anion. Fluorescence emission analysis in acetonitrile shows that the fluorescence of these salts varies significantly according to the nature of the anion, and correlates to the extent of ion pairing present in solution. Photodimerization of these salts was observed, and in one case a dimer has been isolated and characterized by X‐ray crystallography.

The crystal structure of the polyhydrazone dioxime-containing dimeric copper(II) (polyhydrazone dioxime: HON=CMe[CMe=NN=CMe]nCMe=NOH) complex, [Cu2(Hboa)2(H2O)2] · (ClO4)2(1)(H2boa = biacetyl oxime azine) has been determined. Complex (1)contains an unusual six-membered ring, which is composed of two oxime groups and two CuIIions. The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility of (1)in the 5–300 K range has been interpreted in terms of a CuIIdimer. The magnetic behavior shows that the bridging six-membered ring mediates very strongly in the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction, with the fitting value J= −361(1) cm−1and the e.p.r. g-value of 2.193.

Two novel organic–inorganic hybrid compounds, [PbI2(4,4′-bipy)]n(1) and [PbBr2(4,4′-bipy)]n(2), are synthesized by self-assembly. X-ray crystallography analysis shows that the [PbI2]nchains in 1are linked by 4,4′-bipyridine to form a layer, viaPb–N bonding along the direction of the ‘b’ axis.

Two novel hexadecametal–oxygen cluster compounds, {Ni[(NH₂)₂(C₂H₄)₂NH]₂}₃[PMo^VI₅Mo^V₃V^IV₈O₄₄]·[(NH₂)₂(C₂H₄)₂NH]·H₂O 1 and {Co[(NH₂)₂(C₂H₄)₂NH]₂}₂Na[PMo^VI₆Mo^V₂V^IV₈O₄₄]·8H₂O 2 are synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and characterized by X-ray crystallography, showing that the anion of 1 has a novel tetra-capping mode, and that the first hexadecametal–oxygen host shell is observed in 2.

The title compound, C11H8N2O, has two crystallographically independent mol­ecules in the crystal. Each mol­ecule is basically planar except for the O atom. The two N atoms in the mol­ecule show different behaviour as hydrogen‐bonding acceptors. One of them is involved in intermolecular O—H⃛N hydrogen bonds which stabilize the crystal packing.

In the title compound, C18H13N5, the two pyridyl rings form dihedral angles of 32.7 (2) and 30.1 (2)° with the triazole ring. The most favoured orientation of the pyridyl rings is that with their N atoms on opposite sides of the triazole ring directed towards the phenyl ring. π–π‐Stacking interactions involving pyridyl rings are observed along the aaxis at a perpendicular distance of 3.670 (3) Å. This arrangement is further stabilized by weak intermolecular C—H⋯N hydrogen bonds.

In the title compound, [Ni(C11H12N3O3)(CH3CO2)(H2O)2]·C2H5OH, the coordination geometry of the NiIIatom is a distorted octahedron, with one carbonyl O and two imino N atoms of the hydrazone ligand, together with an acetate O atom, comprising the basal plane, and the two water O atoms occupying axial positions.

In the title compound, 4‐(4H‐1,2,4‐triazol‐4‐yl­imino­methyl)­phenol hemi­hydrate, C9H8N4O·0.5H2O or (I)·0.5H2O, mol­ecules of (I) are arranged as layers running along the baxis through intermolecular O—H⋯N and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. These layers are stabilized by hydrogen‐bonded water mol­ecules to form three‐dimensional networks.

A series of fluorescent…︁anthracene‐functionalized, imidazolium‐based salts containing the cation [AnCH2MeIm]+(An=anthracene and Im=the imidazolium cation) with Cl−, BF4−, PF6−, SO3CF3−, [N(CN)2]−, [N(SO2CF3)2]−, or PhBF3−have been prepared and characterized. In their Full Paper on page 6473 ff., P. J. Dyson et al. describe the single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis of some of the salts and fluorescence emission analysis.
