Ultrasmall amounts of P-doping regulate the electronic structure of Ni/mSiO2and allow the tilted adsorption configuration of furfural for promoting hydrogenation rearrangement of furfural to cyclopentanone.

The development of cost-effective and efficient catalysts plays a critical role in the selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin derivatives for lignin valorization. Herein, we reported “metal-acid” bifunctional catalysts (Ni/Ti-SBA-15) consist of Ni nanoparticles highly dispersed on Ti doped SBA-15, which achieved 100% vanillin conversion and 96.46% selectivity of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) under mild conditions. Characterizations were employed to reveal the morphology and physicochemical properties of the catalysts. The results indicated that doping of Ti species not only increased the number of acidic sites but also promoted the high dispersion of Ni nanoparticles on the support. This research provides a novel concept for the synthesis of cost-effective and efficient catalysts, which contributes to the environmentally friendly and economical conversion of biomass derivatives.

The development of an effective hemostatic agents is of vital importance for saving wounded individuals from uncontrolled hemorrhage, which is the main reason for preventable death after accidental injury. However, current high-performance hemostatic agents suffer from a cumbersome preparation procedures and poor biocompatibility. Here, we engineered a cellulosic-derived aerogel material by simply controlling the drying process of cellulose regeneration for fast hemostasis. Four different freeze-drying pretreatments were investigated. As compared with the other three, the cellulosic aerogel material prepared without freezing pretreatment exhibited the lowest crystallinity (21.3%) and the highest body fluid absorption capacity (20.3 times that of its own weight) due to its super hierarchical porous structure, which led to an excellent hemostatic performance in vitro blood coagulation (≈100 s). Moreover, the addition of gelatin and diatomite in the material could tune the functional groups and electrostatic properties of the aerogel and further enhance its hemostatic performance. Various characterizations, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray nanocomputed tomography (CT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and zeta potential analysis, were carried out to probe the structure–function relationship of the prepared material, and its mechanism of fast hemostasis was thereafter revealed. The results indicate that the developed aerogel is a cost-effective and feasibly scalable hemostatic material suitable for practical use in industry.

Selective deoxygenation of chemicals using non-noble metal-based catalysts poses a significant challenge toward upgrading biomass-derived oxygenates into advanced fuels and fine chemicals. Herein, we report a bifunctional core–shell catalyst (Ni@Al3-mSiO2) consisting of Ni nanoparticles closely encapsulated by the Al-doped mesoporous silica shell that achieves 100% vanillin conversion and >99% yield of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol under 1 MPa H2at 130 °C in water. Due to the unique mesoporous core–shell structure, no significant decrease in catalytic activity was observed after 10 recycles. Furthermore, incorporating Al atoms into the silica shell significantly increased the number of acidic sites. Density functional theory calculations reveal the reaction pathway of the vanillin hydrodeoxygenation process and uncover the intrinsic influence of the Al sites. This work not only provides an efficient and cost-effective bifunctional hydrodeoxygenation catalyst but also offers a new synthetic protocol to rationally design promising non-noble metal catalysts for biomass valorization or other widespread applications.

The objective of the present study is to assess the effect of the total solids (TS) content on the digestion performance, methanogenic pathways, and economic evaluation of anaerobic co-digestion with dairy manure and maize stover. The results showed that the cumulative methane yields decreased with increasing TS content, which was consistent with the maximum methane production rate and hydrolysis rate. The pH, alkalinity, soluble chemical oxygen demand, ammonium nitrogen, and volatile fatty acid content increased with increasing TS content. Analysis of the microbial community showed that the abundance of Methanosaetadecreased and Methanosarcinaincreased with increasing TS content, which led to the succession of the methanogenesis pathway from the acetoclastic pathway to the mixotrophic and hydrogenotrophic pathways. Results of the economic analysis indicated that the profitability of AD system increased with increasing TS content, resulting in more solid digestate being produced under the analysis conditions.

The catalytic interfaces between metals and acidic sites in Ru/γ-Al2O3were regulated by TFMSA modification, which can dramatically improve the catalytic performance of the metal-acid catalyst for HDO conversion of lignin to jet fuels.
