Shade factors, defined as the percentage of sky covered by foliage and branches within the perimeter of individual tree crowns, have been used to model the effects of trees on air pollutant uptake, building energy use and rainfall interception. For the past 30 years the primary source of shade factors was a database containing values from 47 species. In most cases, values were obtained from measurements on a single tree in one location. To expand this database 11,024 shade factors were obtained for 149 urban tree species through a photometric process applied to the predominant species in 17 U.S. cities. Two digital images were taken of each tree, crowns were isolated, silhouette area defined and shade factors calculated as the ratio of shaded (i.e., foliage and woody material) pixels to total pixels within the crown silhouette area. The highly nonlinear relationship between both age and diameter at breast height (DBH), and shade factor was captured using generalized additive mixed models. We found that shade factors increased with age until trees reached about 20 years or 30 cm DBH. Using a single shade factor from a mature tree for a young tree can overestimate actual crown density. Also, in many cases, shade factors were found to vary considerably for the same species growing in different climate zones. We provide a set of tables that contain the necessary values to compute shade factors from DBH or age with species and climate effects accounted for. This new information expands the scope of urban species with measured shade factors and allows researchers and urban foresters to more accurately predict their values across time and space. This study presents an improved theoretical formulation of the gap probability ( Pgap ) model, typically applied to indirectly estimate LAI in woody ecosystems. Specifically, we present the woody element projection function ( G W ), which characterises the angular contribution of non-leaf facets in woody ecosystems, and explain how it may be used to improve the accuracy of indirect LAI retrieval via the application of the Pgap model. G W enables separate treatment of the leaf and wood projection functions in the theoretical model, important in the typical case when Pgap includes the influence of both leaf and wood canopy elements. This study then validates the improved theoretical model using experimental data. Here, Pgap was calculated from a 3D scattering model, parameterised with highly-detailed 3D explicit tree models reconstructed from empirical data of a sampled forest stand. The experimental data was then used to quantify additional effects of view zenith angle ( VZA ), leaf angle distribution (LAD), and the influence of woody components on the indirect estimation of LAI and within-crown clumping via application of the Pgap model. Additionally, we quantify within-crown clumping of reconstructed tree models for leaf and woody elements both together and separately for the first time. LAI errors up to 25% at zenith were found when ignoring G W and were shown to be a function of VZA . Conversely, at the approximate 57.3° (1 radian) VZA , results show that there was no effect of G W due to the wood projection function converging with leaf projection functions. Within-crown clumping factors for the modelled dataset were as low as 0.35. Consequently, making a common assumption of a random distribution of canopy elements at the crown scale would lead to an LAI error of up to 65% for the 3D forest stand. We also conclude that when estimating LAI via the Pgap model, separate treatment of canopy material projection ‘ G ’ functions are required at VZA’s other than 1 radian. The findings of this study and the extended physical formulation presented here impact upon indirect Pgap LAI retrieval methods from sensors of all platforms in clumped canopy environments or canopies with woody (non-leaf) elements contributing to the extinction of light. Fragmentation poses one of the greatest threats to tropical forests with shortterm changes to the structure of forest canopies affecting microclimate, tree mortality, and growth. Yet the long-term effects of fragmentation are poorly understood because (1) most effects require many decades to materialize, but long-term studies are very rare, (2) the effects of edges on forest canopy structure as a function of fragment size are unknown, and (3) edge effects are often confounded by fragment shape. We quantified the long-term (centennial) effects of fragmentation on forest canopy structure using airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) of 1060 Hawaiian rain forest fragments ranging in size from 0.02 to 1000 ha, created more than 130 years ago by flowing lava. Along with distance from edge, we developed a metric, minimum span, to gain additional insight into edge effects on three measures of canopy structure: canopy height, height variation, and gap fraction. Fragment size was a strong determinant of the three structural variables. Larger fragments had greater average height, larger variation in height, and smaller gap fraction. Minimum span had a large effect on the depth and magnitude of edge effects for the three structural variables. Locations associated with high span values (those surrounded by more forest habitat) showed little effect of distance to fragment edge. In contrast, locations with low span values (those more exposed to edges) were severely limited in canopy height, showed lower height variation, and were associated with greater gap fraction values. The minimum span attribute allows for a more accurate characterization of edge as well as fragment-level effects, and when combined with high resolution imagery, can improve planning of protected areas for long-term ecological sustainability and biodiversity protection. Abstract: The spatial pattern was characterized in five experimental plots of 0.5ha established in Scots pine stands located in the Central Mountain Range of Spain with different ecological conditions and in which different silvicultural practises are employed. A new method is proposed to asses the spatial pattern from hemispherical photographs, based on the variance between the gap fractions in sky sectors, which was calculated as a function of the angular distance. The results were compared with the spatial pattern analysis based on the second moment measure, and with the analysis of the structure of the tree number semivariogram. The three methods give a very similar scale of the pattern for most of the plots. The mature plot with more intensive silviculture showed a regular pattern at scales below 6m. The mature plot in which the silviculture was less intensive showed a cluster pattern at scales around 10m, and clustering at similar scales was detected during regeneration. Cluster patterns at scales around 5m were found at the upper limit of the altitudinal range of Scots pine as well as at the lower limit, where Pyrenean oak stands merge with the pinewood. The method proposed allows the scale of the pattern of the canopy to be determined from hemispherical photographs, and can be easily implemented in forest inventories. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study compared fullframe fisheye photography and cover photography with destructive leaf area index (L) estimation and the Licor LAI-2000 plant canopy analyser (PCA) in plantations of the vertical leaved species Eucalyptus globulus. Fullframe fisheye photography differs from circular fisheye photography in that the images have reduced field of view such that the zenithal range of 0–90° extends to the corners of the rectangular image, roughly doubling image resolution compared to circular images. Cover images instead are obtained by pointing a 70mm equivalent focal length lens (in 35mm format) straight upwards. Measurements of cover and indirect estimates of plant area index (L t) were made in 12 stands of 6–8 years old Eucalyptus globulus. L was measured using destructive sampling and allometry in nine of these stands and ranged from 2.5 to 6.6. Both foliage cover and L t from the PCA were well correlated with L from allometry, but fullframe fisheye photography provided poor estimates of L despite corrections for foliage clumping. Sampling location had a significant effect on estimates of crown porosity, crown cover and zenithal clumping index from cover photography. The zenithal extinction coefficient (k), calculated from L, crown porosity and cover, ranged from 0.14 to 0.25 and appeared to decrease as L increased; hence, we were unable to obtain an unambiguous estimate of k for E. globulus stands. Nonetheless, the study showed that L can be estimated from foliage cover with similar certainty to that of the PCA. We conclude that the greatest challenge facing indirect estimation of L in forests using photographic methods is to separate the effects of foliage angle from those of foliage clumping. The article presents a study which combines a field study of canopy gap fraction with spectral mixture analyses of satellite imagery and Landsat 7 ETM to evaluate landscape and dynamics of canopy damage after selective logging in an eastern Amazon forest. The use of Monte Carlo analysis and a spectral mixture model to estimate high spatial resolution cover of forest canopies is stated. The usefulness of the method for quantifying forest canopy cover fraction in intact forest areas is cited.
