The desire to reach ever-diminishing lower limits of quantification (LLOQ) to probe changes in low abundance protein targets has led to enormous progress in sample preparation and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) instrumentation. To maximize signal and reduce noise, many approaches have been employed, including specific immunoaffinity (IA) enrichment and reducing the LC flow to the nanoflow (nLC) level; however, additional sensitivity gains may still be required. Recently, a technique termed “echo summing” has been described for small-molecular-weight analytes on a triple quadrupole (QqQ) MS where multiple iterations of the same, single selected reaction monitoring (SRM) transition are collected, summed, and integrated, yielding significant analyte dependent signal-to-noise (S/N) improvements. Herein, the direct applicability of echo summing to protein quantification by sequential IA combined with nLC-MS/MS (IA-nLC-MS/MS) is described for a beta nerve growth factor (NGF) and a soluble asialoglycoprotein receptor (sASGPR) assay from human serum. Five iterations of echo summing outperformed traditional collection in relative average accuracy (−1.5 ± 7.7 vs −41.7 ± 10.7% bias) and precision (7.8 vs 18.4% coefficient of variation (CV)) of the low-end quality control (QC) sample (N= 4) for NGF and improved functional sensitivity of serially diluted serum QC samples (N= 5 each population) approximately 2-fold (1.96 and 2.00-fold) for two peptides of sASGPR. Echo summing also extended the minimum quantifiable QC level for sASGPR 4-fold lower. Similar gains are believed to be achievable for most protein IA-nLC-MS/MS assays.

ABSTRACTThe San José Bike Party (SJBP) is a diverse collective of cyclists gathering for monthly group rides around the urban centre of San José, California. By leveraging social networking platforms, the SJBP announces a route and theme just prior to the ride each month. We argue that organizing, producing, and participating in these rides constitute a political act which can help to promote civic engagement and collective action. Further, we explored the way in which collective action can be fostered via social media. Through analysis of semi-structured individual interviews, focus-group interviews, moving methodologies and field observations derived from researcher participation in SJBP events, we articulate the complexities of contested and negotiated meanings of the use of technology, social media and activism assigned to the event by participants, yielding these themes: Critical Analysis of Social Media’s Influence, Political Expressions in the SJBP and Prefigurative Politics in the SJBP.

With high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), power systems are increasingly transforming into distributed power grids, which provide grid automation, decarbonization, and decentralization of critical assets. Smart inverters are key power-electronic devices that connect renewable energy and energy storage equipment to power grids. DER includes several intelligent grid functions, such as fault ride through, grid-voltage support, and reactive-power compensation, typically with real-time remote access, data exchange, and seamless over-the-air firmware updates in a cyber-physical environment. However, cybersecurity concerns arise due to extensive information exchange among DER and multiple stakeholders (e.g., utilities, aggregators, vendors, operators, and owners). Therefore, smart inverters account for a growing attack surface for the power grid. This article reviews the cybersecurity best practices and current recommendations for smart inverters and explores emerging cyber threats for smart inverters, including malware attacks and hardware attacks. Finally, we propose a new smart inverter security and resilience framework for developing cyber-resilient smart inverters against the advanced/future threat actors. This article establishes a resilience-by-design baseline reference for smart inverter cybersecurity teams, which bridges the gap between cybersecurity and power-electronics’ communities.

Analysis of the ordinary mode (O‐mode) instability is performed to comprehend the nonthermal continuum (NTC) radiation near the plasmapause, taking into account the relativistic wave‐electron resonance effect. The energy source is the anisotropy in the velocity of the minority suprathermal electron population. Numerical solutions demonstrate that the O‐mode can be unstable with multiple narrow frequency bands located close to harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency above the local electron plasma frequency. These waves have narrow beaming angle bands of nearly 90°$90{}^{\circ}$relative to the ambient magnetic field. Our findings indicate that NTC radiation generated by this wave‐electron resonance instability near the plasmapause can propagate nearer to the magnetic equator with multiple harmonics, which is in agreement with a recent statistical study using Van Allen Probes. To understand the entry of the cool low‐latitude mantle ions into the tail plasma sheet near the flanks under persistent interplanetary magnetic field By, we evaluate the role of the cross‐field diffusive transport by kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) by investigating two events observed by multiscale (MMS) spacecraft. Around the separatrix between the open and closed field‐line regions, a two‐component mixing of hot plasma sheet ions of a few keV with cool mantle ions of a few hundred eV was observed, indicating transport across the separatrix. The waves observed between 0.01 and 10 Hz around the separatrix had characteristics consistent with those of KAWs. The consistency allowed us to estimate the wave vectors as a function of frequency by fitting KAW dispersion to the observations. Using the observed wave powers, plasma moments, and the estimated wave vectors, we computed the cross‐field diffusion rates associated with KAWs. The diffusion rates were found to be comparable to or larger than the Bohm diffusion rates during the intervals when the two‐component mixing was observed, indicating that the KAW diffusive transport can play a role in the entry of low‐latitude mantle ions into the plasma sheet. Gestational heat stress (GHS) directly impacts litter development and viability and has long term negative postnatal effects on offspring. However, current data on the interactions between GHS, maternal feed energy partitioning, and fetal development measures in pigs are limited. Therefore, the study objective was to gain a greater understanding of how early GHS influences fetal development and viability and whether maternal feed energy partitioning has a role. Gestating gilts (n = 23) were exposed to thermoneutral (TN; n = 11; 18.5 ± 1.2°C) or heat stress (HS; n = 12; cyclic 26 to 38°C) conditions beginning on d 6.0 ± 0.9 of gestation to 33.0 ± 1.7. The HS treatments resulted in greater (P< 0.05) respiration rates and body temperature and HS gilts grew faster (P< 0.05; 0.5 ± 0.1 kg/d) than TN gilts (0.3 ± 0.1 kg/d) as previously reported. Pregnant gilts were individually housed and limit-fed a standard gestating gilt diet (1.82 kg/d; 4.39 Mcal NE intake/d). On gestation d 33 ± 1.7, gilts were harvested and reproductive tract weight, corpus luteum (CL) counts, and fetal weights and counts were recorded. Additionally, fetal images were taken with a digital camera to assess fetal length, width, crown rump length (CRL), and viability using Image J. Fetuses were considered nonviable if CRL was more than 2 standard deviations less than the mean litter CRL or had irregular anatomical traits. All data were analyzed using PROC GLIMMIX with either pregnant gilt as the experimental unit for litter-based measures or individual fetus as the experimental unit for fetal based measures. Gilt NE intake efficiency [average daily gain (ADG); NE intake) was greater for HS (P= 0.04; 0.11 ± 0.01) when compared with TN gilts (0.07 ± 0.01). No fetal ADG (P= 0.26; 0.12 ± 0.04 g/d) or fetal ADG; gilt NE intake differences (P= 0.26; 0.03 ± 0.01) were detected between treatments. Total fetuses per CL were decreased for HS gilts (P= 0.01; 0.72 ± 0.03 fetuses) when compared with TN gilts (0.85 ± 0.04 fetuses). Viable fetuses per CL were reduced for HS gilts (P= 0.05; 0.69 ± 0.01 fetuses) when compared with TN gilts (0.80 ± 0.04 fetuses). The difference between total CL count and total fetuses per gilt tended to be increased for HS (P= 0.08; 6 ± 1 fetus) versus TN gilts (4 ± 1 fetus). No other fetal differences were observed (P> 0.10). In conclusion, early GHS improved gilt growth performance and NE efficiency, but resulted in decreased fertilization rates and reduced fetal viability and had no impact on fetal growth and development.

Farrowing facility macroenvironment temperatures (TMacro) are often maintained at the upper end of the thermoneutral zone (24–25°C) of lactating sows, which may result in heat stress and reduced milk quality and quantity. Therefore, the study objective was to evaluate the impact of TMacroon thermoregulatory and milk quality parameters in lactating sows and their litters. In two repetitions, 37 lactating sows (parity = 3.1 ± 1.7) and their litters (d 1 litter size = 12.0 ± 1.0) were housed within 1 of 3 farrowing rooms set to different TMacro: LOW (n = 12 sows and litters; 15.0 ± 0.4°C), MID (n = 13 sows and litters; 19.3 ± 0.2°C), and HIGH (n = 12 sows and litters; 24.6 ± 0.8°C). Lactating sows and litters were monitored from d 3 of lactation until weaning (19.8 ± 0.9 d of age). All litters were provided with a 0.34 × 1.52 m heating pad. Sow respiration rates (RR, breaths per minute, BPM) were measured daily at 0800, 1200, 1600 and 2000 h by counting the number of flank movements. Vaginal temperature (TV) was measured in all sows at 10-min intervals using implanted data loggers. One sentinel piglet from each litter was implanted with a temperature recording bolus at d 2 of age to monitor core body temperature in 15-min intervals. Milk samples were collected from all sows on d 6, 12, and 18 of lactation and analyzed for true protein %, total solid %, and fat %. Data were analyzed using PROC GLIMMIX. The litter was considered the experimental unit for piglet measures, and the sow was considered the experimental unit for sow measures. Respiration rates were greater (P< 0.01) for HIGH (48 ± 2 bpm) sows versus MID (33 ± 2 BPM) and LOW (27 ± 2 bpm) sows, but no differences were detected between MID and LOW sows. A TMacrotreatment by lactation day effect was observed for TV(P= 0.02), where HOT sows had greater TVon lactation d 15 (+0.31°C), 18 (+0.43°C) and 19 (+0.34°C) versus MID and LOW sows. Piglet core body temperature was reduced (P< 0.01) in the HIGH (39.07 ± 0.06 °C) versus the MID (39.31 ± 0.06 °C) and LOW (39.33 ± 0.07 °C) treatment groups, but it was similar for MID and LOW litters. Fat % was reduced for COLD (6.15 ± 0.52%) versus MID (7.35 ± 0.50%) sows on d 12, but no differences were observed when compared with HIGH sows (6.97 ± 0.52%). In conclusion, the HIGH treatment resulted in physiological heat stress for lactating sows and lowered piglet core body temperature, but it had minimal effects on measures of milk quality.

Heat stress (HS) alters physiological and metabolic processes in lactating sows leading to decreased milk production, which is a major factor limiting growth and survivability of piglets. While genomic selection for thermotolerance may be a viable solution to alleviate the negative effects of HS on pig welfare, it may be linked to a reduction in milk production and subsequently, litter growth performance. Therefore, the study objective was to evaluate the effects of genomic selection for thermotolerance and its interaction with early gestational HS on biomarkers of mammary gland development in replacement gilts. We hypothesized that HS exposure as well as genomic selection for thermotolerance would negatively affect mammary epithelial proliferation rate. A total of 36 Landrace (33%) × Large White (67%) crossbred gilts divergently selected for thermotolerance (TOL; n = 18) or thermosensitivity (SEN; n = 18) were balanced by body weight, bred to a single Duroc sire, and then exposed to either thermoneutral (TN; constant 17 to 22°C) or cyclical HS (26 to 36°C) conditions until d 65 of gestation. From d 66 of gestation until farrowing, all pregnant gilts were exposed to TN conditions. Of the 36 total gilts bred, only 28 became pregnant yielding 15 HS gilts (n = 8 SEN and 7 TOL) and 13 TN gilts (n = 7 SEN and 6 TOL). On d 105 of gestation, a mammary biopsy was taken from all gilts, mammary tissue was placed into 10% buffered formalin, and KI67 immunohistochemical staining was performed to identify proliferating mammary epithelial cells (MEC). Proliferating and non-proliferating MEC populations were counted using ImageJ tool. Data were analyzed using PROC GLM in SAS 9.4 with individual gilt as the experimental unit. Overall, early gestational HS decreased (P< 0.01; 16.53 ± 2.12%) the percent of proliferating MEC relative to those kept under TN conditions (26.42 ± 2.39%). However, no effect of genomic line divergence was detected with any comparison (P> 0.05). In conclusion, early gestation HS, but not genomic selection for thermotolerance, had a negative impact on biomarkers of mammary gland development in replacement gilts. These data may suggest that early gestation HS could have a reductive effect on milk production capacity, which may negatively affect litter growth.

Role-based access control (RBAC) is adopted in the information and communication technology domain for authentication purposes. However, due to a very large number of entities within organizational access control (AC) systems, static RBAC management can be inefficient, costly, and can lead to cybersecurity threats. In this article, a novel hybrid RBAC model is proposed, based on the principles of offline deep reinforcement learning (RL) and Bayesian belief networks. The considered framework utilizes a fully offline RL agent, which models the behavioral history of users as a Bayesian belief-based trust indicator. Thus, the initial static RBAC policy is improved in a dynamic manner through off-policy learning while guaranteeing compliance of the internal users with the security rules of the system. By deploying our implementation within the smart grid domain and specifically within a Distributed Energy Resources (DER) ecosystem, we provide an end-to-end proof of concept of our model. Finally, detailed analysis and evaluation regarding the offline training phase of the RL agent are provided, while the online deployment of the hybrid RL-based RBAC model into the DER ecosystem highlights its key operation features and salient benefits over traditional RBAC models.

Increased global temperatures pose challenges to livestock agriculture. Domestic swine are particularly sensitive to hotter environments due to their inability to sweat, litter bearing nature, difficulty in expressing natural cooling behaviors, and intense genetic selection for production traits. Since animal welfare is central to livestock production as a matter vital to efficiency as much as ethics, developing novel traits that may be genetically related to heat tolerance may assist in improving and sustaining animal welfare. The objective of this study was to develop novel traits of behavior using an ethogram designed for efficiency in production settings, estimate the variance components, and correlate these traits with indicators of heat tolerance and maternal ability. This study considered 1,312 individual Landrace-Large White cross production sows between 6 and 19 days of lactation. Animals were housed in farrowing crates in a commercial setting in southern North Carolina in June and July of 2021, an environment susceptible to potential heat stress. These sows were subjected to a standardized procedure involving a person removing hair from both hips using an electric clipper while an observer was positioned in front of the sow to record behaviors. Scores were later applied to the variations in behavior both for changes in positions and types of vocalizations displayed by the animals during handling. Genotypes were obtained from hair follicles and captured by a 50K porcine SNP panel. Variance components for novel behavior traits were obtained using the BLUPF90+ programs and genomic relationship matrix to estimate genetic correlations of behavior with several indicators of heat tolerance and maternal ability. Heritabilities for behavior traits ranged from 0.131 for vocalization score to 0.072 for shaving time, while heritabilities for heat tolerance and maternal ability ranged from 0.15 to 0.03 for vaginal temperature and respiration efficiency, respectively. The maternal ability traits were based on the single current litter and had the lowest heritabilities ranging from 0.101 to 0.04 for number born alive and number of mummies, respectively. High and positive genetic correlations indicate a potential for coupled selection for both fewer mummified piglets and a greater number of liveborn using the behavior trait of vocalization score. These correlations between favorable maternal traits and behavior traits suggest the potential that one or more complex biological pathways exist that share relevancy between these traits. However, genetic correlations between the behavior traits and heat tolerance indicators were low to negligible, most with a magnitude falling below 0.10, revealing the need for other traits to be used as selection parameters for heat tolerance. Further studies may be able to capture additional environmental effects to improve models of behavior and create indirect measures more obtainable than direct measures of heat tolerance.

Climatic resilience (CR) can be defined as the ability of an animal to maintain euthermia under thermally stressful conditions. However, CR based on longitudinal physiological variables has not been included in current swine genetic selection schemes. This is the first study deriving novel CR indicators using automatically recorded vaginal temperatures (TV) and estimating genetic parameters for them. Therefore, the study objectives were to: 1) derive novel indicators of CR based on automatically recorded vaginal temperature (TV); and 2) estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters for these indicators. TVof 1,381 lactating sows (parities 2 to 7; Landrace × Large White) were measured automatically every 10 minutes from June 5th, 2021 to July 30th, 2021 using a vaginally implanted thermochron data recorder. A total of 1,639 F1 (Landrace x Large White) sows within the studied population were genotyped using the PorcineSNP50K Bead Chip. A total of 18 HS indicators derived from Tv, their definitions, heritability estimates, and mean genomic estimated breeding value (GEBV) accuracies are shown in Table 1. Multi-trait animal models were fitted for estimating the (co)variance components, considering the effects of week of data collection, parity, and location (barn and room within barn) as fixed. Heritability estimates for these resilience traits ranged from 0.0004 ± 7.16E-6 (SlopeDe) to 0.291 ± 0.047 (HSAB). Most traits derived directly from vaginal temperature (e.g., Duration: 0.201 ± 0.033, MaxTv: 0.203 ± 0.032) are moderately heritable with substantial additive genetic variance. Besides, LnVar(Med) that is derived from the deviation between the real and predicted value had moderate heritability (0.196 ± 0.041) and high mean GEBV accuracy (0.616 ± 0.042). The indicators defined based on the slope of Tv and time had low heritability estimates, which are close to zero, and low mean GEBV accuracy (0.106 ± 0.050 – 0.337 ± 0.065). Among all the CR indicators, Duration, MaxTv, Nor_medvar, Nor_avevar, HSAA, and HSABoutperformed the other indicators with moderate heritability estimates and high average GEBV accuracies. Genetic correlations were estimated among the six indicators with moderate heritability and high mean GEBV accuracy. Moderate to high positive genetic correlations (0.508 ± 0.034 to 0.992 ± 0.025) were estimated among Duration, MaxTv, Nor_medvar, HSAB, and HSAA. LnVar(Med) showed low negative genetic correlations (-0.218 ± 0.028 to -0.039 ± 0.018) with the traits Duration, MaxTv, HSAA, and HSAB, except with Nor_medvar, which was positive (0.156 ± 0.022). Thus, Duration, LnVar(Med), MaxTv, Nor_medvar, HSAB, and HSAAmight be promising CR indicator and contribute toward improving lactating sows’ resilience to thermal stress through genetic selection. New studies about the relationship between these new indicators and other economic important traits in pigs are required before including them in selection indexes.

Pre-weaned piglets prefer higher temperatures than lactating sows. To address this, swine producers use heating lamps or pads in combination with maintaining farrowing room macroenvironment temperatures at the upper end of the thermoneutral zone (24-25℃) of the lactating sow. This may inadvertently cause thermal stress for lactating sows resulting in decreased feed consumption, and ultimately, reduced milk production and litter growth. Therefore, the objective was to determine the sow level macroenvironment temperature that would improve both sow and litter productivity. In two repetitions, 37 lactating sows (parity = 3.1 ± 1.7) and their litters (d 1 litter size = 12.0 ± 1.0) were housed within 1 of 3 farrowing rooms set to different macroenvironment temperatures: LOW (n = 12 sows and litters; 15.0 ± 0.4℃), MID (n = 13 sows and litters; 19.3 ± 0.2℃), and HIGH (n = 12 sows and litters; 24.6 ± 0.8℃). Lactating sows and their litters were on trial from the onset of farrowing until weaning (19.8 ± 0.9 d of age). Individual farrowing crate temperatures were recorded throughout the trial in 0.14 s intervals using thermocouples mounted at sow head height. Piglets were provided a 0.34 x 1.52 m heating pad with a verified steady state of 35.0℃. Sow body weight (BW) was recorded at 24 h post-farrowing and at weaning, and piglet weights were measured on d 1, 7, 14 and at weaning to determine average daily BW gain (ADG). Liveborn piglet mortality was recorded throughout the trial. Sow feed intake (FI) was recorded daily from d 1 post-farrowing until weaning. The sow was considered the experimental unit for sow level measures and the litter was considered the experimental unit for piglet measures. Data were analyzed using PROC GLIMMIX in SAS 9.4 and using GLM in JMP 15. Regression models were used to determine the optimal macroenvironment temperature to improve sow FI and piglet ADG. Sow FI was greater (P< 0.01) for LOW (7.91 ± 0.38 kg) and MID (7.32 ± 0.37 kg) versus HIGH (6.37 ± 0.39 kg) sows, but similar for LOW and MID sows. Piglet ADG was greater from d 1 to weaning (P< 0.01) for LOW (0.25 ± 0.01 kg) and MID (0.26 ± 0.01 kg) versus HIGH (0.21 ± 0.01 kg) piglets, but similar for LOW and MID piglets. Pre-weaning mortality was similar (P= 0.32; 15.6%) among all treatments. A quadratic effect was observed (P< 0.01) where sow FI was maximized at a macroenvironment temperature of 17.2℃. A cubic effect was observed (P< 0.01) where piglet ADG was greatest at 17.0℃. In summary, these data have implications towards housing lactating sows and their litters at lower macroenvironment temperatures to improve growth performance.

Non-additive genetic effects may have important roles in the phenotypic expression of performance and adaptation traits in livestock. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the inclusion of non-additive genetic effects in genomic prediction models and variance component estimation of performance traits in a purebred pig population and heat tolerance indicators in a crossbred pig population. The first dataset consisted of 3,534 individuals with genotypes for 52,843 SNPs and five pre-adjusted phenotypes from a public database of a purebred pig line. Twelve models fitting or not dominance and/or epistasis effects (additive-by-additive, additive-by-dominance, and dominance-by-dominance) and inbreeding were used to estimate variance components. Prediction ability was assessed based on 10-fold cross-validation and the bias, dispersion, and accuracy estimates were computed based on the LR method. We also evaluated the impact of including non-additive genetic effects on the ranking of the animals’ breeding value and in the proportion of commonly selected individuals. The second dataset consisted of records from 1,645 lactating sows (Large White x Landrace cross) genotyped for 50,703 SNPs and traits related to heat stress response: skin temperature (ear, shoulder, rump, and tail), vaginal temperature measured every 10 minutes, and the average of the six records per hour corresponding to 08:00, 12:00, 16:00, and 20:00 hours during four days; respiration rate, panting score (PS; score scale from 0 to 3), and hair density (HD, score scale from 0 to 2). Four models including or not, inbreeding and the effect of dominance and additive-by-additive epistasis were used to estimate variance components. There was no effect on residual variance estimates due to the inclusion of non-additive genetic effects in the models for most traits. However, non-additive genetic effects reduced additive variance estimates, especially when additive-by-additive epistasis was fitted. Including non-additive genetic effects in the model did not improve the prediction accuracy of breeding values for purebreds, but there was a substantial change in the ranking of the animals and in the proportion of commonly selected individuals. For the crossbred traits, small non-additive genetic variance with large standard error estimates were obtained. Nevertheless, PS and HD presented notable additive-by-additive epistatic variance. PS presented h2aaestimates of 0.15 and additive-by-additive epistasis corresponding to 86.76% of the total genetic variance, while HD presented additive-by-additive epistatic heritability (h2aa) estimates from 0.46 to 0.49 and the proportion of total genetic variance explained by additive-by-additive epistasis ranged from 66.91% to 71.87%. In conclusion, including non-additive genetic effects did not improve the accuracy of prediction of breeding values for purebreds, but it changed the ranking of animals and selection decisions. Although PS and HD had large additive-by-additive epistasis effects, most of the traits related to heat stress in the crossbred population did not present relevant non-additive genetic effects.

Lactating sows are among the most heat stress sensitive population in the swine herd. Exposure to high ambient temperatures causes a marked decrease in production measures and welfare in lactating sows and may have a negative downstream impact on piglet growth due to impaired sow lactogenesis. Genomic selection for improved heat stress (HS) tolerance may be a viable method to reduce the negative impacts of HS on lactating sows and their offspring. However, selection for HS tolerance is generally associated with decreased productivity. Therefore, the study objective was to evaluate the impact of genomic selection for thermotolerance on indirect measures of sow milk production under HS conditions. We hypothesized that heat tolerant sows would have a decrease in indirect measures of milk production when compared with heat sensitive sows. A total of 20 multiparous lactating sows (Large White x Landrace; parity = 4.85 ± 0.75) divergently genomically selected for heat tolerance (TOL; n = 11) or heat sensitivity (SEN; n = 9) were subjected to cyclic HS temperatures (28 to 32° C) from day 2.5 ± 1.0 post-farrowing until weaning (d 21.3 ± 1.1). On d 4, 8, 14, and 18 of lactation, indirect calorimetry was used to estimate total heat production (THP) on an individual sow basis following previously published methods by our group. In addition, sow respiration rate (RR) was measured daily at 0800, 1200, 1600, and 2000 h. All data were analyzed using PROC GLIMMIX in SAS 9.4 with individual sow included as the experimental unit. It was determined that TOL sows had an overall increase (P= 0.04; 5.68 ± 0.24 kcal·sow· kg BW0.75(-1)) in THP when compared with SEN sows (4.74 ± 0.18 kcal·sow· kg BW0.75(-1)). A treatment by day effect was observed where THP was greater (P <0.01; 88%) for TOL sows on d 4 of lactation when compared with SEN sows. Preliminary evidence suggests that TOL sows had an overall increase (P= 0.01) in RR (78 ± 5 bpm) when compared with SEN sows (73 ± 5 bpm). Taken together, these data suggest that genomic selection methods used to increase lactating sow thermotolerance may have had a positive impact on indirect measures of lactogenesis under HS conditions.

Several management practices and technologies have been developed to mitigate thermal stress in swine. However, recommended temperature thresholds for implementing thermal stress mitigation are variable and may not accurately reflect the thermal requirements of non-pregnant and gestating sows with modern genetics. Therefore, a tool to support environmental management decisions for non-pregnant and gestating sows was created. The decision support tool is based on several published works by our group that characterized responses of non-pregnant, mid-gestation, and late-gestation sows across a wide temperature range. Cool, comfortable, and warm ranges were identified based upon behavioral thermal preferendum, and physiological responses were used to determine mild, moderate, and severe heat stress thresholds. The inflection points of respiration rate and body temperature as a function of dry bulb temperature were used to establish heat stress thresholds by gestation stage. Non-pregnant, mid-gestation, and late-gestation sow mild heat stress thresholds differed (P <0.05) and occurred at 25.5, 25.1, and 24.0 °C, respectively. Body temperature inflection points indicative of moderate heat stress differed by gestation stage (P <0.05) and occurred at 28.1, 27.8, and 25.5 °C, respectively. Severe heat stress inflection points were lower (P <0.05) for late-gestation sows (30.8 °C) but were similar for non-pregnant and mid-gestation sows (32.9 °C). Dewpoint influenced heat stress response for mid- and late-gestation sows (P <0.05) but did not have an effect on non-pregnant sows (P> 0.05). Heat stress threshold data were integrated with behavioral thermal preferendum data. For non-pregnant and mid-gestation sows, similar (P> 0.05) cool (< 13.2°C) and comfortable (13.2 to 16.4°C) temperature ranges were observed. However, late-gestation sows had lower (P <0.05) cool (< 12.6°C) and comfortable (12.6 to 15.6°C) temperature ranges relative to non-pregnant and mid-gestation sows. The dry bulb temperature (TDB) that non-pregnant, mid-gestation, and late-gestation sows found to be warm was estimated as TDBpreference range < TDB< mild heat stress. The decision support tool was integrated into a smartphone application called HotHog. This smartphone application provides hourly and daily predictions of thermal comfort and stress in non-pregnant, mid-gestation, and late-gestation sows. Users can set geographical locations, either manually or by current location, for thermal index predictions. Additionally, hourly and daily precipitation, and temperature predictions are displayed for the selected location. Management observations and mitigation options, as well as expected physiological and behavioral changes, are provided for each thermal index category to help users identify stressed pigs and assist with management decisions. HotHog will support swine producers in making more informed decisions related to in-barn environmental management to reduce the negative effects of thermal stress on sows and their gestating offspring. Furthermore, the tool may be helpful for teaching thermal management to livestock technicians and students.

ABSTRACTThis paper is an exploration of the possibilities for employing multiple ‘moving’ qualitative research methodologies in order to engage and capture embodied emotions and practices of participating in the San José Bike Party (SJBP). SJBP originated in 2004–2005 as an organised community group ride through the urban streets of San José, California. The ride has grown to include 2000–4000 riders of diverse riding levels and social backgrounds. Through social media, leaders of the group map out the route, lay out the rules of the road, and provide instructions for riders. In an effort to capture and examine the meaning of SJBP to participants, we have taken a multi-dimensional approach that incorporates ethnographic and phenomenological elements through the use of both traditional and nontraditional (mobile) data collection methods: conducting, for example, one-on-one interviews, focus group interviews, as well as ‘on the move’ interviews with GoPro cameras during the ride itself. Leaning on work that calls for more sociological engagement in the ‘mobilities turn’, we present some of our reflections on the use of multiple and moving/mobile methodologies towards a hybridised post qualitative research practice.

The study objective was to investigate the effect of repeated hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis stimulation using synthetic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)intramuscular injections on hair cortisol concentration, growth, and behavior in preweaned dairy calves. Twenty-seven Holstein calves were assigned to nine triads (based on sex and birth order) and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: 1) control (CON; 2 mL saline weekly); 2) moderate (MOD; alternating Cosyntropin [2 mcg/kg body weight (BW)] and saline weekly); or 3) frequent (FREQ; Cosyntropin [2 mcg/kg BW] weekly). Calves received their first injection on study day 0 (7 ± 1 d of age). Hair was collected from the tail switch between days −5 and −3 (baseline), 21, and 49 and analyzed for cortisol concentration. To verify the endogenous cortisol release by Cosyntropin during the treatment period, saliva was collected on days 0, 14, 28, and 42 before injection and every 15 min for 2 h after injection for analysis of salivary cortisol concentration. Calves were fitted with accelerometers to continuously monitor lying time, number of lying bouts, and lying bout duration throughout the study. Growth measures (BW, hip height, hip width) were recorded weekly. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (SAS, Version 9.4), and models included the fixed effects of treatment, time (min or study day), and interaction between treatment and time. Temperature humidity index was included as a continuous covariate in all models. We observed a treatment × min interaction (P < 0.0001), whereby salivary cortisol concentration was lower in CON calves compared to MOD and FREQ calves 15 to 120 min postinjection. While hair cortisol concentration was not influenced by treatment, concentration decreased from day 21 (1.28 ± 0.03 ng/mL) to 49 (0.93 ± 0.03 ng/mL). Average BW was similar across treatments (CON [59.4 ± 1.09 kg], MOD [58.6 ± 0.98 kg], and FREQ [57.6 ± 0.96 kg]; P= 0.50). There was no evidence to suggest a difference in average daily lying time (CON [18.5 ± 0.23 h/d], MOD [18.6 ± 0.23 h/d], and FREQ [18.5 ± 0.23 h/d]; P= 0.99). These results suggest that repeated HPA axis stimulation through Cosyntropin administration increased salivary cortisol concentration, but did not influence hair cortisol concentration, growth, or behavior in preweaned dairy calves.Few measures of chronic stress exist for dairy calves. This research study investigated the potential use of hair cortisol as a noninvasive measure of chronic stress in dairy calves.Measures to quantify long-term or chronic stress in livestock are limited. The amount of cortisol (a stress hormone) deposited in the hair has been used as a noninvasive measure of long-term stress in some livestock species; however, few studies have investigated its use in young dairy calves. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of hair cortisol as a less invasive measure of stress in calves. Calves were either injected with saline (control) or Cosyntropin, a hormone that activates the stress response system, at different frequencies during the first two months of life. Cosyntropin injection increased salivary cortisol concentration (an indicator of acute stress) but did not increase hair cortisol concentration. There was no evidence to suggest a significant effect of treatment on calf growth. Calf behavior was similar between treatment groups. These results suggest that the method used to activate the stress response system in this study was sufficient to induce an acute stress response in calves (as indicated by increased salivary cortisol concentration), and more research is needed to investigate measures of chronic stress in young dairy calves.

Antibiotic use has been limited in U.S. swine production. Therefore, the objective was to determine whether supplementing l-glutamine at cost-effective levels can replace dietary antibiotics to improve piglet welfare and productivity following weaning and transport. Based on previous research, we hypothesized that withholding dietary antibiotics would negatively affect pigs while diet supplementation with 0.20% l-glutamine (GLN) would have similar effects on pig performance and health as antibiotics. Mixed sex piglets (N = 480; 5.62 ± 0.06 kg BW) were weaned (18.4 ± 0.2 d of age) and transported for 12 h in central Indiana, for 2 replicates, during the summer of 2016 and the spring of 2017. Pigs were blocked by BW and allotted to 1 of 3 dietary treatments (n = 10 pens/dietary treatment/replicate [8 pigs/pen]); antibiotics (A; chlortetracycline [441 ppm] + tiamulin [38.6 ppm]), no antibiotics (NA), or GLN fed for 14 d. On days 15 to 34, pigs were provided common antibiotic-free diets in 2 phases. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED in SAS 9.4. Day 14 BW and days 0 to 14 ADG were greater (P = 0.01) for A (5.6% and 18.5%, respectively) and GLN pigs (3.8% and 11.4%, respectively) compared with NA pigs, with no differences between A and GLN pigs. Days 0 to 14 ADFI increased for A (P < 0.04; 9.3%) compared with NA pigs; however, no differences were detected when comparing GLN with A and NA pigs. Once dietary treatments ceased, no differences (P > 0.05) in productivity between dietary treatments were detected. On day 13, plasma tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) was reduced (P = 0.02) in A (36.7 ± 6.9 pg/mL) and GLN pigs (40.9 ± 6.9 pg/mL) vs. NA pigs (63.2 ± 6.9 pg/mL). Aggressive behavior tended to be reduced overall (P = 0.09; 26.4%) in GLN compared with A pigs, but no differences were observed between A and GLN vs. NA pigs. Huddling, active, and eating/drinking behaviors were increased overall (P < 0.02; 179%, 37%, and 29%, respectively) in the spring replicate compared with the summer replicate. When hot carcass weight (HCW) was used as a covariate, loin depth and lean percentage were increased (P = 0.01; 4.0% and 1.1%, respectively) during the spring replicate compared with the summer replicate. In conclusion, GLN supplementation improved pig performance and health after weaning and transport similarly to A across replicates; however, the positive effects of A and GLN were diminished when dietary treatments ceased.

The ability to determine total heat production (THP) in individual sows and litters can be logistically difficult and often requires the use of multiple animals to generate data on a per room basis. Furthermore, these systems may be costly to construct, precluding their use by many researchers. Therefore, the objective was to develop a low-cost indirect calorimetry system to determine THP in individual lactating sows and litters. Six indirect calorimeters were constructed to house 1 sow and litter in a crate throughout farrowing and a 21-d lactation period. Farrowing crates were placed within a high-density polyethylene pan filled with water and then a polyvinyl chloride frame was constructed around the crate. The frame provided a structure to hold the inlet and outlet air pipes, feed and water inlets, air circulation fans, and a polyethylene plastic sheet that was secured at the bottom of the frame and submerged under water to maintain an air tight seal. Chamber accuracies for O2 and CO2 were evaluated by ethanol combustion. One week pre-farrowing, 6 pregnant multiparous sows (parity 2.9 ± 0.9; 218.3 ± 38.6 kg BW) were housed individually in each farrowing crate and the calorimeters were maintained at thermoneutral conditions (20.9 ± 2.6°C and 43.7 ± 18.6% relative humidity) throughout lactation. On lactation day 4, 8, 14, and 18, indirect calorimetry was performed on all sows and their litters, as well as 2 piglets from a sentinel litter to determine THP and the respiratory quotient (RQ). Sentinel piglet data were used to estimate THP and RQ for the sows independent of the litter. Sow + litter THP (kcal/h) increased (P = 0.01; 16.6%) on day 8 compared to day 4 and was greater (27.3%) on day 14 and day 18 compared to day 4 and day 8. Sow THP was greater (P = 0.01) on day 8 (401.19 ± 17.15 kcal/h) and day 14 (430.79 ± 12.42 kcal/h) compared to day 4 (346.16 ± 16.62 kcal/h), and was greater on day 14 compared to day 8, and on day 18 (386.16 ± 20.02 kcal/h) compared to day 14. No sow + litter RQ differences (P = 0.21; 1.02 ± 0.04) were detected by day of lactation. However, sow RQ was reduced (P = 0.01) on day 14 (0.98 ± 0.02) compared to day 4 (1.03 ± 0.03), day 8 (1.02 ± 0.02), and day 18 (1.04 ± 0.03). In summary, this cost-effective system (total cost: $1,892 USD) can allow researchers to accurately evaluate THP in individual lactating sows and their litters.

We discuss a role of the electron inertial effect on linearly polarized electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves at Earth. The linearly polarized EMIC waves have been previously suggested to be generated via mode conversion from the fast compressional wave at the ion‐ion hybrid (IIH) resonance. When the electron inertial effects are neglected, the wave normal angle of the mode‐converted IIH waves is 90° because the wave vector perpendicular to the magnetic field becomes infinite at the IIH resonance. When the electron inertial effect is considered, the mode‐converted IIH waves can propagate across the magnetic field lines, and the wavelength perpendicular to the magnetic field approaches the electron inertial length scale near the Buchsbaum resonance. These waves are referred to as electron inertial waves. Due to the electron inertial effect, the perpendicular wave number to the ambient magnetic field near the IIH resonance remains finite, and the wave normal angle is less than 90°. The wave normal angle where the maximum absorption occurs in a dipole magnetic field is 30–80°, which is consistent with the observed values near the magnetic equator. Therefore, the numerical results suggest that the linearly polarized EMIC wave generated via mode conversion near the IIH resonance can be detected in between the Buchsbaum and the IIH resonance frequencies, and these waves can have normal angle less than 90°. Postnatal heat stress negatively impacts pig productivity and well-being as animals attempt to manage the resultant strain response. This is especially true when postnatal heat stress is combined with production stressors (e.g., mixing, weaning, transport, handling, and isolation) that have the potential to increase disease occurrence, morbidity and mortality. While pigs can utilize adaptive physiological mechanisms to compensate, these are often unfavorable to efficient livestock production. Specifically, postnatal heat stress decreases weight gain, reduces growth and production efficiency, alters carcass composition, and increases morbidity and mortality. Consequently, decreased animal performance constrains profitability and affects economic sustainability. In addition to the negative effects of postnatal heat stress, prenatal heat stress has long-term consequences that may compromise future piglet well-being and performance. Pigs gestated under heat stress conditions have an increased postnatal stress response and an increase in maintenance energy requirements. Furthermore, prenatal heat stress decreases swine birth weight, and increases teratogenicity, core body temperature set-point, and alters postnatal body composition (more adipose tissue and less skeletal muscle). Taken together, the effects of heat stress during pre- and postnatal pig development negatively influences productivity and well-being, a scenario that threatens the sustainability of global swine production.

Heat stress decreases the sustainability and profitability of global swine production and the reductive effects of pre- and post-natal heat stress on pig productivity have been well described. Decreased growth performance and sow milk production during heat stress exposure is generally attributed to reduced energy consumption and a corresponding catabolic state. Moreover, an assumed increase in maintenance costs due to energetic requirements for thermoregulation and greater chemical reaction rates is proposed to reduce energy available for growth and lactogenesis leading to decreased efficiency and productivity. Despite this, recent research has determined that postnatal heat stress can directly impact nutrient partitioning priorities and growth rate independent of energy intake, maintenance costs may be reduced in heat stressed pigs relative to thermoneutral controls, and that heat stress may have a direct negative effect on sow milk production and litter growth performance independent of sow energy intake. In addition to the postnatal consequences of heat stress, prenatal heat stress reduces postnatal growth rate and feed efficiency in pigs independent of the postnatal environment, increases fasting heat production during the growing phase, and alters nutrient partitioning priorities during the finishing phase leading to an increase in adipose tissue accretion at the expense of lean accretion. Furthermore, meat quality and quantity may be negatively impacted by prenatal heat stress exposure. In summary, both pre- and postnatal heat stress exposure elicit bioenergetic changes in pigs that influence postnatal productivity, and mitigating heat stress is and will likely continue to be a priority for the swine industry.

Interoperable distributed energy resources (DER), including photovoltaic (PV) inverters, are capable of providing a number of grid services by receiving commands from grid operators, aggregators, or other third parties. In many control scenarios, the grid operator must determine the operating mode and parameters for the devices to achieve a specific control objective. In this paper, we experimentally validate a distributed technique to achieve optimal DER reactive power operating points for distribution circuit voltage regulation using extremum seeking control. The method is demonstrated with physical and virtual DER connected to multiple hardware-in-the-loop distribution circuit simulations. This paper demonstrates PV inverters with realistic communication interfaces can receive real-time control signals from an aggregator and adjusting their reactive power to minimize voltage deviations. Simulations were conducted with fixed and variable solar irradiance to demonstrate the robustness of the approach.

Study objectives were to evaluate the impact of early life thermal stress (ELTS) on thermoregulation, stress response, and intestinal health of piglets subjected to a future heat stress (HS) challenge during simulated transport. From d 7 to 9 post-farrowing, 12 first-parity sows and their litters were exposed to thermoneutral (ELTN; 25.4 ± 1.1 °C w/heat lamp; n= 4), HS (ELHS; cycling 32–38 °C w/heat lamp; n= 4), or cold stress (ELCS; 25.4 ± 1.1 °C w/no heat lamp; n= 4) conditions, and then from d 10 until weaning all piglets were exposed to thermoneutral (TN) conditions (25.3 ± 1.9 °C w/heat lamp). During the ELTS period, respiration rate, rectal temperature (TR), and skin temperature (TS) of three mixed-sex piglets per dam were monitored daily (0800, 1200, 1600, 2000 h). At 13 ± 1.3 d of age, temperature recorders were implanted intra-abdominally into all piglets. At weaning (20.0 ± 1.3 d of age), piglets were bled and then herded up a ramp into a simulated transport trailer and exposed to HS conditions (cycling 32–38 °C) for 8 h. During the 8 h simulated transport, core body temperature (TC) and TSwere assessed every 15 min. After the simulated transport, piglets were unloaded from the trailer, bled, weighed, and then housed individually in TN conditions (28.5 ± 0.7 °C) for 7 d. During this time, ADFI and ADG were monitored, blood samples were taken on d 1, 4, and 7, and piglets were video-recorded to assess behavior. Piglets were sacrificed on d 8 post-simulated transport and intestinal morphology was assessed. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED in SAS 9.4. In the ELTS period, piglet TRwas increased overall (P= 0.01) in ELHS (39.77 ± 0.05 °C) compared to ELTN (39.34 ± 0.05 °C) and ELCS (39.40 ± 0.05 °C) litters. During simulated transport, TCwas greater (P= 0.02) in ELHS (40.84 ± 0.12 °C) compared to ELTN (40.49 ± 0.12 °C) and ELCS (40.39 ± 0.12 °C) pigs. Following simulated transport, BW loss was greater (P= 0.01; 40%) for ELHS compared to ELTN and ELCS pigs and ADFI was reduced (P= 0.05; 28.6%) in ELHS compared to ELTN pigs. Sitting behavior tended to be increased (P= 0.06; 47.4%) in ELHS vs. ELCS or ELTN pigs. Overall, circulating cortisol was greater for ELHS (P≤ 0.01; 38.8%) compared to ELCS and ELTN pigs. Goblet cells per villi were reduced (P= 0.02; 20%) in the jejunum of ELHS vs. ELCS and ELTN pigs. In summary, ELHS reduced thermotolerance and increased the future stress response of piglets compared to ELCS and ELTN.

As the price of oil and gas fluctuates in the world economy, and the consequences of a global reliance on fossil fuels resonate in the Anthropocene, Indigenous communities in Alaska are making sustainable choices away from these enterprises. The overall economic effect of high fuel costs and varying land tenure status has put stress on remote Alaska’s mixed subsistence and commercial resource economy. These communities in Alaska pay at least two times as much for diesel fuel on average when compared to prices in the lower 48 states. As a result, Gwichyaa Zhee Corporation, a local Alaska Native owned company, is actively pursuing woody biomass as an alternative energy source in pursuit of energy sovereignty for the village of Fort Yukon, Alaska. This research was interested in what influenced the corporation to pursue biomass. To explore the central themes that promoted energy sovereignty, the authors interviewed biomass personnel and examined archival materials to inductively develop themes during the summer of 2015. These findings indicate that remote, rural Indigenous communities, like Fort Yukon, are not solely motivated by government policies that encourage decreased dependence and a transition away from nonrenewable energies. Rather, rural Indigenous communities implement alternative energy projects like this as a course of action towards their sustainable future development.

Grid operators are increasingly turning to advanced grid-support functions in distributed energy resources (DER) to assist with distribution circuit voltage regulation, bulk system frequency control, and power system protection. The U.S. DER certification standard, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 1741, was revised in September 2016 to add test procedures for multiple grid-support functions. Sandia National Laboratories, SunSpec Alliance, and growing community of collaborators have undertaken a multiyear effort to create an open-source system validation platform (SVP) that automates DER interconnection and interoperability test procedures by communicating with grid simulators, photovoltaic (PV) simulators, data acquisition systems, and interoperable equipment under test. However, the power hardware required for generating the test conditions may be untenable for many organizations. Herein, we discuss development of the SVP testing capabilities for UL 1741 tests utilizing a controller hardware-in-the-loop testbed that precludes the need for power hardware using a 34.5 kW Austrian Institute of Technology smart grid controller. Analysis of normal ramp rate, soft start ramp rate, specified power factor, volt-VAr, and frequency-watt advanced grid functions, and the effectiveness of the UL 1741 test protocols are included.

ABSTRACTOutdoor hockey is considered a quintessentially “Canadian” leisure pursuit, and is enjoyed on rinks constructed in local parks within urban centres as well as on frozen ponds in rural regions of the country. Such experiences are being threatened, however, due to increasingly warming winter months and shortened skating seasons caused by climate change. This paper explores the meaning behind the loss of outdoor hockey for Canadians by outlining socio-historical narratives that posit hockey as a symbol of childhood memory, nationhood, and romanticized fantasy. Such fantasies are unsettled, however, when juxtaposed with the current realities of the game, which, rather than taking place in its “natural” state, occurs primarily indoors. The migration of hockey into climate-controlled facilities is symbolic of a Canadian physical activity culture that disproportionately favours organized, competitive sport. This privileging of organized sport has not been met, however, with increased physical activity amongst the majority of Canadian youth, especially amongst low socio-economic communities. Such inequities when it comes to sport and play are exacerbated within the hockey realm, where class, racialized, and gender distinctions are more pronounced than within other athletic endeavours. In response, we posit a construction of outdoor hockey not as a romanticized fantasy of the past, but as a potential social space conducive to unstructured play, community revitalization, and inclusivity that transcends these barriers to the current state of hockey. Under current climate change projections, the potential for such spaces continues to slowly melt away.

ABSTRACTThis essay investigates how theologians should engage with the “leftovers,” or detritus, of the great theological quests by interrogating the process of doing and writing theology. Posing questions about theology’s purpose and systematic method, along with questions that examine both the object of theology and the subjectivity of the theologian, this essay directs its inquiry to uncovering the very foundations of theology today, which itself must be constructed out of divine detritus.

We examine coupling of fluctuations in the solar wind with electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in the magnetosphere using an advanced full‐wave simulation code, Petra‐M. Dipole tilt dramatically affects the coupling process. While very little wave power can reach the inner magnetosphere without tilt effects, a tilted dipole field dramatically increases the efficiency of the coupling process. Solar wind fluctuations incident at high magnetic latitude effectively reaches the ground along the field line and mode‐convert to linearly polarized field‐aligned propagating waves at the Alfvén and IIH resonances. Therefore, solar wind compressions efficiently drive linearly polarized EMIC waves when the dipole angle is tilted toward or away from the Sun‐Earth direction. The solar wind is emitted near the ecliptic planes, and solar wind pressure is one of the critical sources of wave activities in the Earth's magnetosphere. Since Earth's magnetic field is tilted to the ecliptic plane, compressed solar wind fluctuations can be incident over a wide range of magnetic latitudes depending on seasonal and diurnal variations. When the solar wind fluctuations reach Earth's magnetosphere, incoming wave energy can be linearly transferred to another wave mode, called a mode coupling. This paper examines the role of Earth's magnetic tilt on this mode coupling between solar wind fluctuation and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves using an advanced full‐wave simulation code, Petra‐M. Without magnetic tilt, solar wind fluctuations incident at a low latitude are almost totally reflected. In contrast, solar wind fluctuations incident at high latitude can propagate efficiently into the inner magnetosphere and reach the ground. Compressional fluctuations can also be converted to linearly polarized, field‐aligned propagating waves. These results suggest that solar wind compressions can drive the linearly polarized EMIC waves and that the wave occurrence can have seasonal and diurnal dependence, which is expected to maximize at the maximum tilt of Earth's dipole into the Sun‐Earth direction. An accurate understanding of heat stress (HS) temperatures and phenotypes that indicate HS tolerance is necessary to improve swine HS resilience. Therefore, the study objectives were 1) to identify phenotypes indicative of HS tolerance, and 2) to determine moderate and severe HS threshold temperatures in lactating sows. Multiparous (4.10 ± 1.48) lactating sows and their litters (11.10 ± 2.33 piglets/litter) were housed in naturally ventilated (n= 1,015) or mechanically ventilated (n= 630) barns at a commercial sow farm in Maple Hill, NC, USA between June 9 and July 24, 2021. In-barn dry bulb temperatures (TDB) and relative humidity were continuously recorded for naturally ventilated (26.38 ± 1.21 °C and 83.38 ± 5.40%, respectively) and mechanically ventilated (26.91 ± 1.80 °C and 77.13 ± 7.06%, respectively) barns using data recorders. Sows were phenotyped between lactation days 11.28 ± 3.08 and 14.25 ± 3.26. Thermoregulatory measures were obtained daily at 0800, 1200, 1600, and 2000 h and included respiration rate, and ear, shoulder, rump, and tail skin temperatures. Vaginal temperatures (TV) were recorded in 10 min intervals using data recorders. Anatomical characteristics were recorded, including ear area and length, visual and caliper-assessed body condition scores, and a visually assessed and subjective hair density score. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED to evaluate the temporal pattern of thermoregulatory responses, phenotype correlations were based on mixed model analyses, and moderate and severe HS inflection points were established by fitting TVas the dependent variable in a cubic function against TDB. Statistical analyses were conducted separately for sows housed in mechanically or naturally ventilated barns because the sow groups were not housed in each facility type simultaneously. The temporal pattern of thermoregulatory responses was similar for naturally and mechanically ventilated barns and several thermoregulatory and anatomical measures were significantly correlated with one another (P< 0.05), including all anatomical measures as well as skin temperatures, respiration rates, and TV. For sows housed in naturally and mechanically ventilated facilities, moderate HS threshold TDBwere 27.36 and 26.69 °C, respectively, and severe HS threshold TDBwere 29.45 and 30.60 °C, respectively. In summary, this study provides new information on the variability of HS tolerance phenotypes and environmental conditions that constitute HS in commercially housed lactating sows.Housing conditions influenced heat stress threshold temperatures but had a limited impact on phenotypes that predict heat stress tolerance in lactating sows housed under commercial conditions.Climate change and the associated increase in global temperatures have a well-described negative impact on swine production. Therefore, improving swine heat stress resilience is of utmost importance to reduce the deleterious effects of heat stress on swine health, performance, and welfare. Genomic selection for heat stress resilience may be a viable strategy to improve swine productivity in a changing climate. However, identifying environmental conditions that constitute heat stress and deriving novel traits that can be easily collected on farm and provide accurate and precise predictions of heat stress tolerance is a necessary step. The present study demonstrated that housing conditions had a limited influence on heat stress tolerance phenotypes, several anatomical and thermoregulatory measures were correlated, and housing conditions impacted heat stress threshold temperatures. Results from this study may be applied to large-scale phenotyping initiatives to develop or refine genomic selection indexes for heat stress resilience in pigs.

Heat stress (HS) negatively influences cows’ welfare and productivity. Therefore, a better understanding of the physiological and molecular mechanisms of HS responses from multiple parities is paramount for the development of effective management and breeding strategies. In comparison with first-parity cows in the spring (Spring-1), first-parity cows in the summer (Summer-1) had a significantly higher rectal temperature (RT), respiration rate (RR), drooling score (DS), and daily activity (DA), while lower (P< 0.05) daily rumination (DR), seven-day average milk yield (7AMY), milk yield on sampling day (MY_S), milk yield on test day (MY_T), and lactose percentage (LP) were observed. When comparing the spring (Spring-2) and summer (Summer-2) of the second-parity cows, significant differences were also found in RT, RR, DS, DA, and DR (P< 0.05), corresponding to similar trends with the first parity while having smaller changes. Moreover, significantly negative impacts on performance traits were only observed on fat percentage (FP) and LP. These results showed that there were different biological responses between first- and second-parity Holstein cows. Further, 18 and 17 metabolites were involved in the seasonal response of first- and second-parity cows, respectively. Nine differential metabolites were shared between the two parities, and pathway analyses suggested that cows had an inhibited tricarboxylic acid cycle, increased utilization of lipolysis, and a dysregulated gut microbiome during the summer. The metabolites identified exclusively for each parity highlighted the differences in microbial response and host amino acid metabolism between two parities in response to HS. Moreover, glucose, ethanol, and citrate were identified as potential biomarkers for distinguishing individuals between Spring-1 and Summer-1. Ethanol and acetone were better predictors for distinguishing individuals between Spring-2 and Summer-2. Taken together, the present study demonstrated the impact of naturally induced HS on physiological parameters, production traits, and the blood metabolome of Holstein cows. There are different biological responses and regulation mechanisms between first- and second-parity Holstein cows.

When renewable energy resources are installed in electricity grids, they typically increase generation variability and displace thermal generator control action and inertia. Grid operators combat these emerging challenges with advanced distributed energy resource (DER) functions to support frequency and provide voltage regulation and protection mechanisms. This paper focuses on providing frequency reserves using autonomous IEC TR 61850-90-7 pointwise frequency-watt (FW) functions that adjust DER active power as a function of measured grid frequency. The importance of incorporating FW functions into a fleet of photovoltaic (PV) systems is demonstrated in simulation. Effects of FW curve design, including curtailment, deadband, and droop, were analyzed against performance metrics using Latin hypercube sampling for 20%, 70%, and 120% PV penetration scenarios on the Hawaiian island of Lanai. Finally, to understand the financial implications of FW functions to utilities, a performance function was defined based on monetary costs attributable to curtailed PV production, load shedding, and generator wear. An optimization wrapper was then created to find the best FW function curve for each penetration level. It was found that in all cases, the utility would save money by implementing appropriate FW functions.

The solar wind‐magnetosphere system is nonlinear. The solar wind drivers of geosynchronous electrons with energy range of 1.8–3.5 MeV are investigated using mutual information, conditional mutual information (CMI), and transfer entropy (TE). These information theoretical tools can establish linear and nonlinear relationships as well as information transfer. The information transfer from solar wind velocity (Vsw) to geosynchronous MeV electron flux (Je) peaks with a lag time of 2 days. As previously reported, Jeis anticorrelated with solar wind density (nsw) with a lag of 1 day. However, this lag time and anticorrelation can be attributed at least partly to the Je(t+ 2 days) correlation with Vsw(t) and nsw(t+ 1 day) anticorrelation with Vsw(t). Analyses of solar wind driving of the magnetosphere need to consider the large lag times, up to 3 days, in the (Vsw, nsw) anticorrelation. Using CMI to remove the effects of Vsw, the response of Jeto nswis 30% smaller and has a lag time < 24 h, suggesting that the MeV electron loss mechanism due to nswor solar wind dynamic pressure has to start operating in < 24 h. nswtransfers about 36% as much information as Vsw(the primary driver) to Je. Nonstationarity in the system dynamics is investigated using windowed TE. When the data are ordered according to transfer entropy value, it is possible to understand details of the triangle distribution that has been identified between Je(t+ 2 days) versus Vsw(t). Alfvénic waves are believed to be fundamentally important in magnetic reconnection. Kinetic dynamics of particles can break the Alfvén speed limit in the evolution and propagation of perturbations during reconnection. In this paper, the generation and signatures of kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) associated with magnetic reconnection in a current sheet is investigated using a three-dimensional (3-D) hybrid code under a zero or finite guide field. In order to understand the wave structures in the general cases of multiple X line reconnection, cases with a single X line of various lengths are examined. The KAWs are identified using the wave dispersion relation, electromagnetic polarization relations, as well as spectral analysis. In the cases in which the X line is so long to extend through the entire simulation domain in the current direction, quasi 2-D configurations of reconnection are developed behind a leading flux/plasma bulge. KAWs with perpendicular wave number k??i~1 (with ?ibeing the ion Larmor radius) are found throughout the transient plasma bulge region and propagate outward along magnetic field lines with a slightly super-Alfvénic velocity. These KAWs are generated from the X line and coexist with the whistler structure of the ion diffusion region under a small guide field. In the cases in which the X line has a finite length 2?~ 10di, with ?being the half length of the X line and dithe ion inertial length, the KAWs originated from the X line are of 3-D nature. Under a finite guide field, KAWs propagate along the oblique magnetic field lines into the unperturbed regions in the current direction, carrying parallel electric field and Poynting fluxes. The critical X line length for the generation of 3-D-like structures is found to be 2?c=30di. The structure, propagation, energy, spectrum, and damping of the KAWs are examined. Dependence of the structure of KAWs on the guide field is also investigated. Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are known to be excited by the cyclotron instability associated with hot and anisotropic ion distributions in the equatorial region of the magnetosphere and are thought to play a key role in radiation belt losses. Although detection of these waves at the ground can provide a global view of the EMIC wave environment, it is not clear what signatures, if any, would be expected. One of the significant scientific issues concerning EMIC waves is to understand how these waves are detected at the ground. In order to solve this puzzle, it is necessary to understand the propagation characteristics of the field‐aligned EMIC waves, which include polarization reversal, cutoff, resonance, and mode coupling between different wave modes, in a dipolar magnetic field. However, the inability of ray tracing to adequately describe wave propagation near the crossover cutoff‐resonance frequencies in multi‐ion plasmas is one of reasons why these scientific questions remain unsolved. Using a recently developed 2‐D full‐wave code that solves the full‐wave equations in global magnetospheric geometry, we demonstrate how EMIC waves propagate from the equatorial region to higher magnetic latitude in an electron‐proton‐He+plasma. We find that polarization reversal occurs at the crossover frequency from left‐hand polarization (LHP) to right‐hand (RHP) polarization and such RHP EMIC waves can either propagate to the inner magnetosphere or reflect to the outer magnetosphere at the Buchsbaum resonance location. We also find that mode coupling from guided LHP EMIC waves to unguided RHP or LHP waves (i.e., fast mode) occurs. The proceedings of the National Science Foundation supported WIS2DOM workshop state that sustainability scientists must respect the “protocols” of practitioners of Indigenous sciences if the practitioners of the two knowledge systems are to learn from each other. Indigenous persons at the workshop described protocols as referring to attitudes about how to approach the world that are inseparable from how people approach scientific inquiry; they used the terms caretaking and stewardship to characterize protocols in their Indigenous communities and nations. Yet sustainability scientists may be rather mystified by the idea of protocols as a necessary dimension of scientific inquiry. Moreover, the terms stewardship and caretaking are seldom used in sustainability science. In this case report, the authors seek to elaborate on some possible meanings of protocols for sustainability scientists who may be unaccustomed to talking about stewardship and caretaking in relation to scientific inquiry. To do so, the authors describe cases of Indigenous protocols in action in relation to scientific inquiry in two Indigenous-led sustainability initiatives in the Great Lakes/Midwest North American region. We claim that each case expresses concepts of stewardship and caretaking to describe protocols in which humans approach the world with the attitude of respectful partners in genealogical relationships of interconnected humans, non-human beings, entities and collectives who have reciprocal responsibilities to one another. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of Indigenous protocols for future dialog between practitioners of sustainability and Indigenous sciences.

Contemporary Indigenous activism asserts an agency for place not normally found in geographical scholarship. Through place-based protest, organizing, and direct action, Native and non-Native people are interacting with place as a conscious being with the capacity to speak, create, and teach the responsibilities required for more inclusive forms of coexistence in today’s settler states. This “placework” articulates a more-than-human geographical self whose subjectivities are grounded in, and accountable to, land-based relationships and knowledges. Placework contributes to a geographical posthumanism that offers a distinctively Indigenous approach to the predicaments of the Anthropocene.

In utero heat stress (IUHS) has several postnatal consequences in pigs that compromise health, increase stress response, and reduce performance. These phenotypes may be caused by epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation, which are heritable molecular modifications that impact gene expression and phenotypic outcomes without changing the DNA sequence. Therefore, we aimed to compare the DNA methylation profiles between in-utero thermoneutral (IUTN) and IUHS pigs to identify differentially methylated regions. Twenty-four pregnant gilts were evenly assigned to either a thermoneutral (17.5 ± 2.1°C) or heat stress (cycling 26 to 36°C) chamber from d 0 to 59 of gestation, followed by thermoneutral conditions (20.9 ± 2.3°C) for the rest of gestation and until the piglets were weaned. At 105 d of age, 10 IUTN and 10 IUHS piglets were euthanized and Longissimus dorsi muscle samples were collected and used to perform whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS). Purified genomic DNA was fragmented and bisulfite conversion was performed. Illumina platforms were used to sequence WGBS libraries. All pigs had similar proportions of methylation at CpG sites. Two-hundred-sixty-eight genomic regions were differentially methylated between IUTN and IUHS pigs. These identified regions are located across all pig chromosomes and ranged from 2 (SSC18) to 40 (SSC10). Eighty-five unique differentially-methylated genes were identified. These genes have been reported to be involved in key biological processes such as transcriptional repressor activity and tRNA processing (e.g., SKOR2,TRMT6, TSEN2), cellular response to heat stress (e.g.,CCAR2), placental vascularization (e.g.,FZD5), central nervous system (e.g.,VEPH1), cholesterol biosynthesis (e.g., CYB5R1), insulin receptor substrate (e.g.,IRS2), synaptic transmission (e.g.,RIMBP2), neurotrophic factor receptor activity (e.g.,LIFR), immune response (e.g., CD84), DNA repair (e.g., CHD1L), and cell proliferation and endocrine signaling (e.g., SSTR1, CYB5R1). These findings contribute to a better understanding of the epigenomic mechanisms underlying postnatal consequences of IUHS in pigs.

Heat stress (HS) is a major welfare and economic issue in the swine industry. However, it is not a trivial task to appropriately quantify the environmental HS. Therefore, this study aimed to 1) define the critical periods and environmental descriptors (based on public weather station information) to evaluate heat tolerance (HT); and 2) estimate genetic parameters for HT in Large White pigs. The traits included in this study were: weaning weight (WW; kg), off-test weight (OTW; kg), total number of piglets born (TNB), number of piglets born alive (NBA), and number of piglets weaned (WN). The number of phenotypic records ranged from 6,059 (WN) to 172,984 (TNB), and genotypes were available for 8,686 animals. Seven climatic variables (maximum, minimum and average temperatures, average relative humidity, dew point, discomfort index and temperature-humidity index) based on public weather station records were compared based on three criteria [GxE estimate as measured by the slope term; theoretical accuracy of the genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV); deviation of GEBV per environmental value]. Relative humidity (for WN and WW) and maximum temperature (for OTW, TNB, and NBA) are the recommended environmental gradients for the studied traits. The acute HS (average of 30 days before measurement date) was the critical period recommended for OTW. For WN and WW, a period of 34 days prior to farrowing up to weaning is recommended. For TNB and NBA, the critical period of 20 days prior breeding to 30 days into gestation is recommended. In general, WN and WW were largely affected by the environment, while the remaining traits showed moderate correlations (OTW, TNB, and NBA). Heritabilities estimated for HT ranged from 0.08 (WW) to 0.25 (OTW). In summary, these results suggest that there is genotype-by-environment interaction for all traits analyzed, and genetic progress can be achieved through genetic selection.
