We study a class of nonlinear PDEs that admit the same bi-Hamiltonian structure as WDVV equations: a Ferapontov-type first-order Hamiltonian operator and a homogeneous third-order Hamiltonian operator in a canonical Doyle--Potemin form, which are compatible. Using various equivalence groups, we classify such equations in two-component and three-component cases. In a four-component case, we add further evidence to the conjecture that there exists only one integrable system of the above type. Finally, we give an example of the six-component system with required bi-Hamiltonian structure. To streamline the symbolic computation we develop an algorithm to find the aforementioned Hamiltonian operators, which includes putting forward a conjecture on the structure of the metric parameterising the first-order Hamiltonian operator.

In a recent series of papers by Lou et al., it was conjectured that higher dimensional integrable equations may be constructed by utilizing some conservation laws of (1 + 1)-dimensional systems. We prove that the deformation algorithm introduced in arXiv:2211.06844, applied to Lax integrable $(1+1)$-dimensional systems, produces Lax integrable higher imensional systems. The same property is enjoyed by the generalized deformation algorithm introduced in [Lou,Jia,Hao. Chinese Phys. Lett. 2023]; we present a novel example of a $(2+1)$-dimensional deformation of KdV equation obtained by generalized deformation. The deformed systems obtained by such procedure, however, pose a serious challenge because most of the mathematical structures that the $(1+1)$-dimensional systems possess is lost., Comment: 9 pages

We elaborate on a new methodology, which starting with an integrable evolution equation in one spatial dimension, constructs an integrable forced version of this equation. The forcing consists of terms involving quadratic products of certain eigenfunctions of the associated Lax pair. Remarkably, some of these forced equations arise in the modelling of important physical phenomena. The initial value problem of these equations can be formulated as a Riemann-Hilbert problem, where the "jump matrix" has explicit x and t dependence and can be computed in terms of the initial data. Thus, these equations can be solved as efficiently as the nonlinear integrable equations from which they are generated. In this short review we compare constructions of 2d integrable models by means of two gauge field theories. The first one is the 4d Chern-Simons (4d-CS) theory proposed by Costello and Yamazaki. The second one is the 2d generalization of the Hitchin integrable systems constructed by means the Affine Higgs bundles (AHB). We illustrate this approach by considering 1+1 field versions of elliptic integrable systems including the Calogero-Moser field theory, the Landau-Lifshitz model and the field theory generalization of the elliptic Gaudin model., Comment: 21 p

We introduce a class of reductions of the two-component KP hierarchy, which includes the Hirota-Ohta system hierarchy. The description of the reduced hierarchies is based on the Hirota bilinear identity and an extra bilinear relation characterising the reduction. In his 1892 paper [L. Bianchi, Sulla trasformazione di B\"{a}cklund per le superfici pseudosferiche, Rend. Mat. Acc. Lincei, s. 5, v. 1 (1892) 2, 3--12], L. Bianchi noticed, among other things, that quite simple transformations of the formulas that describe the B\"{a}cklund transformation of the sine-Gordon equation lead to what is called a nonlocal conservation law in modern language. Using the techniques of differential coverings [I.S. Krasil'shchik, A.M. Vinogradov, Nonlocal trends in the geometry of differential equations: symmetries, conservation laws, and B\"{a}cklund transformations, Acta Appl. Math. v. 15 (1989) 1-2, 161--209], we show that this observation is of a quite general nature. We describe the procedures to construct such conservation laws and present a number of illustrative examples.

In this article we investigate the coprimeness properties of one and two-dimensional discrete equations, in a situation where the equations are decomposable into several factors of polynomials. After experimenting on a simple equation, we shall focus on some higher power extensions of the Somos-4 equation and the (1-dimensional) discrete Toda equation. Our previous results are that all of the equations satisfy the irreducibility and the coprimeness properties if the r.h.s. is not factorizable. In this paper we shall prove that the coprimeness property still holds for all of these equations even if the r.h.s. is factorizable, although the irreducibility property is no longer satisfied.

We establish a new representation of the infinite hierarchy of Pois- son brackets (PB) for the open Toda lattice in terms of its spectral curve. For the classical Poisson bracket (PB) we give a representation in the form of a contour integral of some special Abelian differential (meromorphic one-form) on the spectral curve. We consider the Whitham equations for deformations of hyperelliptic spectral curves, which preserve all periods of a meromorphic differential. If the meromorphic differential has a root at a fixed point of the hyperelliptic involution, then the Whitham flow has a singularity. Coprimeness property was introduced to study the singularity structure of discrete dynamical systems. In this paper we shall extend the coprimeness property and the Laurent property to further investigate discrete equations with complicated pattern of singularities. As examples we study extensions to the Somos-$4$ recurrence and the two-dimensional discrete Toda equation. By considering their non-autonomous polynomial forms, we prove that their tau function analogues possess the extended Laurent property with respect to their initial variables and some extra factors related to the non-autonomous terms. Using this Laurent property, we prove that these equations satisfy the extended coprimeness property. It has been proved by V. Sokolov that the Krichever-Novikov equation's hierarchy is hamiltonian for the non-local Hamiltonian operator H_0=u_x D^{-1} u_x and possesses twi weakly non-local recursion operatos of degree 4 and 6, L_4 and L_6. We show here that H_0, L_4H_0 and L_6H_0 are compatible Hamiltonian operators for which the Krichever-Novikov equation's hierarchy is hamiltonian.

The perturbed Kepler problem is shown to be a bi-Hamiltonian system in spite of the fact that the graph of the Hamilton function is not a hypersurface of translation, which is against a necessary condition for the existence of the bi-Hamiltonian structure according to the Fernandes theorem. We consider second order differential operators $P$ with polynomial coefficients that preserve the vector space $V_k$ of polynomials of degrees not greater then $k$. We assume that the metric associated with the symbol of $P$ is flat and that the operator $P$ is potential. The structure of solutions is studied for the Lax equation $D_t(G)=[F,G]$ for formal power series with respect to the shift operator. It is proved that if the equation with a given series $F$ of degree $m$ admits a solution $G$ of degree $k$ then it admits, as well, a solution $H$ of degree $m$ such that $H^k=G^m$. In this paper, we construct the bilinear identities for the wave functions of an extended Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy, which is the KP hierarchy with particular extended flows (2008, Phys. Lett. A, 372: 3819). By introducing an auxiliary parameter (denoted by $z$), whose flow corresponds to the so-called squared eigenfunction symmetry of KP hierarchy, we find the tau-function for this extended KP hierarchy. It is shown that the bilinear identities will generate all the Hirota's bilinear equations for the zero-curvature forms of the extended KP hierarchy, which includes two types of KP equation with self-consistent sources (KPSCS). It seems that the Hirota's bilinear equations obtained in this paper for KPSCS are in a simpler form by comparing with the results by Hu and Wang (2007, Inverse Problems, 23: 1433)., Comment: 23 pages, submitted to JNMP

In this paper we investigate discretizations of AGD flows whose projective realizations are defined by intersecting different types of subspaces in $\RP^m$. These maps are natural candidates to generalize the pentagram map, itself defined as the intersection of consecutive shortest diagonals of a convex polygon, and a completely integrable discretization of the Boussinesq equation. We conjecture that the $k$-AGD flow in $m$ dimensions can be discretized using one $k-1$ subspace and $k-1$ different $m-1$-dimensional subspaces of $\RP^m$.

The \hbar-dependent KP hierarchy is a formulation of the KP hierarchy that depends on the Planck constant \hbar and reduces to the dispersionless KP hierarchy as \hbar -> 0. A recursive construction of its solutions on the basis of a Riemann-Hilbert problem for the pair (L,M) of Lax and Orlov-Schulman operators is presented. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is converted to a set of recursion relations for the coefficients X_n of an \hbar-expansion of the operator X = X_0 + \hbar X_1 + \hbar^2 X_2 +... for which the dressing operator W is expressed in the exponential form W = \exp(X/\hbar). Given the lowest order term X_0, one can solve the recursion relations to obtain the higher order terms. The wave function \Psi associated with W turns out to have the WKB form \Psi = \exp(S/\hbar), and the coefficients S_n of the \hbar-expansion S = S_0 + \hbar S_1 + \hbar^2 S_2 +..., too, are determined by a set of recursion relations. We study a family of equations defined on the space of tensor densities of weight $\lambda$ on the circle and introduce two integrable PDE. One of the equations turns out to be closely related to the inviscid Burgers equation while the other has not been identified in any form before. We present their Lax pair formulations and describe their bihamiltonian structures. We prove local wellposedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem and include results on blow-up as well as global existence of solutions. Moreover, we construct "peakon" and "multi-peakon" solutions for all $\lambda \neq 0,1$, and "shock-peakons" for $\lambda = 3$. We argue that there is a natural geometric framework for these equations that includes other well-known integrable equations and which is based on V. A family of nonparametric Yang Baxter (YB) maps is constructed by refactorization of the product of two 2 by 2 matrix polynomials of first degree. These maps are Poisson with respect to the Sklyanin bracket. For each Casimir function a parametric Poisson YB map is generated by reduction on the corresponding level set. By considering a complete set of Casimir functions symplectic multiparametric YB maps are derived. These maps are quadrirational with explicit formulae in terms of matrix operations. Their Lax matrices are, by construction, 2 by 2 first degree polynomial in the spectral parameter and are classified by Jordan normal form of the leading term. Nonquadrirational parametric YB maps constructed as limits of the quadrirational ones are connected to known integrable systems on quad graphs.

Quasi-symmetric functions show up in an approach to solve the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy. This moreover features a new nonassociative product of quasi-symmetric functions that satisfies simple relations with the ordinary product and the outer coproduct. In particular, supplied with this new product and the outer coproduct, the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions becomes an infinitesimal bialgebra. Using these results we derive a sequence of identities in the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions that are in formal correspondence with the equations of the KP hierarchy., Comment: 16 pages

In recent work Bertram Kostant and Nolan Wallach ([KW1], [KW2]) have defined an interesting action of a simply connected Lie group $A$ isomorphic to \mathbb{C}^{{n\choose 2}} on gl(n) using a completely integrable system derived from Gelfand-Zeitlin theory. In this paper we show that an analogous action of \mathbb{C}^{d} exists on the complex orthogonal Lie algebra so(n), where d is half the dimension of a regular adjoint orbit in so(n). In [KW1], Kostant and Wallach describe the orbits of $A$ on a certain Zariski open subset of regular semisimple elements in gl(n). We extend these results to the case of so(n). We also make brief mention of the author's results in [Col1], which describe all $A$-orbits of dimension {n\choose 2} in gl(n)., Comment: 27 pages

We find new solutions, including soliton-like ones, for a special case of non-Abelian loop Toda equations associated with complex general linear groups. We use the method of rational dressing based on an appropriate block-matrix representation suggested by the Z-gradation under consideration. Following the works of Alexandrov, Mironov and Morozov, we show that the symplectic invariants of \cite{EOinvariants} built from a given spectral curve satisfy a set of Virasoro constraints associated to each pole of the differential form $ydx$ and each zero of $dx$ . We then show that they satisfy the same constraints as the partition function of the Matrix M-theory defined by Alexandrov, Mironov and Morozov. The duality between the different matrix models of this theory is made clear as a special case of dualities between symplectic invariants. Indeed, a symplectic invariant admits two decomposition: as a product of Kontsevich integrals on the one hand, and as a product of 1 hermitian matrix integral on the other hand. In this work we have developed the essential tools for the algebraic Bethe ansatz solution of integrable vertex models invariant by a unique U(1) charge symmetry. The formulation is valid for arbitrary statistical weights and respective number $N$ of edge states. We show that the fundamental commutation rules between the monodromy matrix elements are derived by solving linear systems of equations. This makes possible the construction of the transfer matrix eigenstates by means of a new recurrence relation depending on $N-1$ distinct types of creation fields. The necessary identities to solve the eigenvalue problem are obtained exploring the unitarity property and the Yang-Baxter equation satisfied by the $R$-matrix. The on-shell and off-shell properties of the algebraic Bethe ansatz are explicitly presented in terms of the arbitrary $R$-matrix elements. This includes the transfer matrix eigenvalues, the Bethe ansatz equations and the structure of the vectors not parallel to the eigenstates., Comment: 90 pages

In this paper the moduli space of Higgs pairs over a fixed smooth projective curve with extra formal data is defined and it is endowed with a scheme structure. We introduce a relative version of the Krichever map using a fibration of Sato Grassmannians and show that this map is injective. This fact and the characterization of the points of the image of the Krichever map allow us to prove that this moduli space is a closed subscheme of the product of the moduli of vector bundles (with formal extra data) and a formal anologue of the Hitchin base. This characterization also provide us the method to compute explicitely KP-type equations which describe the moduli space of Higgs pairs. Finally, for the case where the spectral cover is totally ramified at a fixed point of the curve, these equations are given in terms of the characteristic coefficients of the Higgs field.

The modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (mKP) equation is shown in this paper to be decomposable into the first two soliton equations of the 2N-coupled Chen-Lee-Liu and Kaup-Newell hierarchies by respectively nonlinearizing two sets of symmetry Lax pairs. In these two cases, the decomposed (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear systems both have a couple of different Lax representations, which means that there are two linear systems associated with the mKP equation under the same constraint between the potential and eigenfunctions. For each Lax representation of the decomposed (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear systems, the corresponding Darboux transformation is further constructed such that a series of explicit solutions of the mKP equation can be recursively generated with the assistance of symbolic computation. In illustration, four new families of solitary-wave solutions are presented and the relevant stability is analyzed., Comment: 23 pages

In this paper the well-known Dubrovin-Novikov problem posed as long ago as 1984 in connection with the Hamiltonian theory of systems of hydrodynamic type, namely, the classification problem for multidimensional Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type, is solved. In contrast to the one-dimensional case, in the general case, a nondegenerate multidimensional Poisson bracket of hydrodynamic type cannot be reduced to a constant form by a local change of coordinates. Generally speaking, such a Poisson bracket is generated by a nontrivial special infinite-dimensional Lie algebra. In this paper we obtain a classification of all nonsingular nondegenerate multidimensional Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type for any number N of components and for any dimension n by differential-geometric methods. A key role in the solution of this problem was played by the theory of compatible metrics that had been earlier constructed by the present author.

We provide a complete analysis of the asymptotics for the semi-infinite Schur flow: $\alpha_j(t)=(1- |\alpha_j(t)|^2) (\alpha_{j+1}(t)-\alpha_{j-1}(t))$ for $\alpha_{-1}(t)= 1$ boundary conditions and $n=0,1,2,...$, with initial condition $\alpha_j(0)\in (-1,1)$. We also provide examples with $\alpha_j(0)\in\mathbb{D}$ for which $\alpha_0(t)$ does not have a limit. The proofs depend on the solution via a direct/inverse spectral transform.

We study the propagation of orientation waves in a director field with rotational inertia and potential energy given by the Oseen-Frank energy functional from the continuum theory of nematic liquid crystals. There are two types of waves, which we call splay and twist waves. Weakly nonlinear splay waves are described by the quadratically nonlinear Hunter-Saxton equation. Here, we show that weakly nonlinear twist waves are described by a new cubically nonlinear, completely integrable asymptotic equation. This equation provides a surprising representation of the Hunter-Saxton equation as an advection equation. There is an analogous representation of the Camassa-Holm equation. We use the asymptotic equation to analyze a one-dimensional initial value problem for the director-field equations with twist-wave initial data.

Starting from certain rational varieties blown-up from (P^1)^N, we construct a tropical, i.e., subtraction-free birational, representation of Weyl groups as a group of pseudo isomorphisms of the varieties. Furthermore, we develop an algebro-geometric framework of tau-functions as defining functions of exceptional divisors on the varieties. In this paper we derive a hierarchy of differential equations which uniquely determine the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion, for large $N$, of the logarithm of the partition function of $N \times N$ Hermitian random matrices. These coefficients are generating functions for graphical enumeration on Riemann surfaces. The case that we particularly consider is for an underlying measure that differs from the Gaussian weight by a single monomial term of degree $2\nu$. The coupling parameter for this term plays the role of the independent dynamical variable in the differential equations. From these equations one may deduce functional analytic characterizations of the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion. Moreover, this ode system can be solved recursively to explicitly construct these coefficients as functions of the coupling parameter. This analysis of the fine structure of the asymptotic coefficients can be extended to multiple coupling parameters and we present a limited illustration of this for the case of two parameters., Comment: 41 pages, 1 table

We investigate the deformation theory of the simplest bihamiltonian structure of hydrodynamic type, that of the dispersionless KdV hierarchy. We prove that all of its deformations are quasi-trivial in the sense of B. Dubrovin and Y. Zhang, that is, trivial after allowing transformations where the first partial derivative of the field is inverted. We reformulate the question about deformations as a question about the cohomology of a certain double complex, and calculate the appropriate cohomology group., Comment: 24 pages

We construct new integrable coupled systems of N=1 supersymmetric equations and present integrable fermionic extensions of the Burgers and Boussinesq equations. Existence of infinitely many higher symmetries is demonstrated by the presence of recursion operators. Various algebraic methods are applied to the analysis of symmetries, conservation laws, recursion operators, and Hamiltonian structures. A fermionic extension of the Burgers equation is related with the Burgers flows on associative algebras. A Gardner's deformation is found for the bosonic super-field dispersionless Boussinesq equation, and unusual properties of a recursion operator for its Hamiltonian symmetries are described. The relation between the Toda lattices and similar nonlinear chains and orthogonal polynomials on the real line has been elaborated immensely for the last decades. We examine another system of the differential-difference equations known as the Schur flow within the framework of the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. This system can be exhibited in equivalent form as the Lax equation, and the corresponding spectral measure undergoes a simple transformation. We extend the integrability analysis for scalar evolution equations of type $$u_t=u_m+f(u,u_1,...,u_{m-1})$$ from the case that the right hand side is a $\lambda$-homogeneous formal power series to the case that it is a nonhomogeneous formal power series. In this paper we introduce new various generalizations of the classical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy in the case of operators in several variables. These generalizations are the candidates for systems that should play the role, analogous to the role of the KP hierarchy in the classical KP theory, in a generalized KP theory. In particular, they should describe flows of some generalized geometric datas, including those described by A.N.Parshin, for certain initial conditions. The unique solvability of the initial value problem for the generalized KP hierarchies is established. The connection of these systems with universal families of isospectral deformations of certain pairs of commuting differential operators is opened. We present a systematic way to construct solutions of the (n=5)-reduction of the BKP and CKP hierarchies from the general tau function of the KP hierarchy. We obtain the one-soliton, two-soliton, and periodic solution for the bi-directional Sawada-Kotera (bSK), the bi-directional Kaup-Kupershmidt (bKK) and also the bi-directional Satsuma-Hirota (bSH) equation. Different solutions such as left- and right-going solitons are classified according to the symmetries of the 5th roots of exp(i epsilon). Furthermore, we show that the soliton solutions of the n-reduction of the BKP and CKP hierarchies with n= 2 j +1, j=1, 2, 3, ..., can propagate along j directions in the 1+1 space-time domain. Each such direction corresponds to one symmetric distribution of the nth roots of exp(i epsilon). Based on this classification, we detail the existence of two-peak solitons of the n-reduction from the Grammian tau function of the sub-hierarchies BKP and CKP. If n is even, we again find two-peak solitons.
