We have successfully grown epitaxial La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$NiO$_4$ films with a small crystalline mosaic using pulsed laser deposition. With synchrotron radiation, the x-ray diffraction peaks associated with charge stripes have been successfully observed for relatively thick films. Anomalies due to the charge-ordering transition have been examined using four-point probe resistivity measurements. X-ray scattering provides direct evidence for suppression of the stripe phase in thin samples; the phase disappears for film thicknesses $\leqslant$ 2600 ~\AA{}. The suppression appears to be a result of shrinking the stripe phase domains. This may reflect the stripe phase progressing from nematic to isotropic., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Nb3Sn was prepared by milling Nb and Sn powder mixtures followed by limited reactions to restrict disorder recovery. Although disorder reduced the superconducting critical temperature Tc, the concomitant electron scattering increased the upper critical field mu0Hc2 to as high as 35 T at 0 K, as determined by the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg equation. Hc2 was higher for longer milling times and lower annealing temperatures. Substitution of 2% Ti for Nb did not appreciably enhance Hc2, suggesting that alloying mitigates the benefits of disorder. Since alloyed Nb3Sn wires have mu0Hc2(0) approximately 29 T, wires based on heavily milled powders could extend the field range for applications if they can be made with high current density.

(Abridged abstract) Alloyed MgB2 differs from pure forms in that diffusion is needed to distribute the alloying elements homogeneously. Williamson-Hall analyses of x-ray diffraction peaks showed that Mg1-xAlxB2 samples made by a typical reaction A had higher crystalline strain than when thoroughly annealed by reaction B. The strain and other analyses indicate that reaction A produced substantial Al gradients across the individual grains while reaction B did not. The gredients skew the apparent superconducting behavior: properties appeared to be distinct when plotted vs. x (e.g. two Tc(x) curves), but all of the data merged when analyzed in terms of the unit cell volume v (e.g. one Tc(v) curve). Since v is derived from x-ray diffraction, it captures the average Al content actually present inside the grains and better reflects the behavior intrinsic to the addition of Al. These analyses show that it is important to coordinate structural and property characterizations to remove artifacts of composition gradients and uncover the intrinsic trends. Because the standard characterizations of the superconducting properties above gave no clear indication that the two sample sets had different homogeneity, the structural information was vital to make a correct assessment of the effects of Al doping on superconductivity.

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) was combined with heat capacity measurements to follow the change of superconductivity with systematic Al doping of MgB$_2$. By using x-ray diffraction and Vegard's law to assess the actual Al content in the samples, changes in behavior were found to be much more in agreement with theoretical predictions than in earlier studies. EELS data show that $\sigma$-band hole states disappear above 33% Al, approximately the composition at which the $\sigma$ band Fermi surface is predicted to lose its cylindrical shape in reciprocal space and break apart into ellipsoidal pockets. At this composition, the $\sigma$ gap obtained from the heat capacity data falls to the level of the $\pi$ gap, implying that band filling results in the loss of strong superconductivity on the $\sigma$ band. However, superconductivity is not quenched completely, but persists with $T_c < 7$ K up to about 55% Al, the Al concentration at which the entire $\sigma$ band is predicted to fall below the Fermi surface. Since, in the region $0.33 \alt x \alt 0.55$, only the $\pi$ band has appreciable density of states, it becomes the stronger of the 2 bands, thus inverting the 2-band hierarchy of MgB$_2$.

We have prepared the oxyhydrate Na03RhO206H2O by extracting Na+ cations from NaRhO2 and intercalating water molecules using an aqueous solution of Na2S2O8. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and energy-dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX) reveal that a non-stoichiometric Na03(H2O)06 network separates layers of edge-sharing RhO6 octahedra containing Rh3+(4d6, S=0) and Rh4+ (4d5, S=1/2). The resistivities of NaRhO2 and Na03RhO206H2O (T < 300) reveal insulating and semi-conducting behavior with activation gaps of 134 meV and 7.8 meV, respectively. Both Na03RhO206H2O and NaRhO2 show paramagnetism at room temperature, however, the sodium-deficient sample exhibits simultaneously a weak but experimentally reproducible ferromagnetic component. Both samples exhibit a temperature-independent Pauli paramagnetism, for NaRhO2 at T > 50 K and for Na03RhO206H2O at T > 25 K. The relative magnitudes of the temperature-independent magnetic susceptibilities, that of the oxide sample being half that of the oxyhydrate, is consistent with a higher density of thermally accessible electron states at the Fermi level in the hydrated sample. Formation of MgB2 by reactions of Mg with B6Si and Mg with B were compared, the former also producing Mg2Si as a major product. Compared to the binary system, the ternary reactions for identical time and temperature were more complete at 750 C and below, as indicated by higher diamagnetic shielding and larger x-ray diffraction peak intensities relative to those of Mg. MgB2 could be produced at temperatures as low as 450 C by the ternary reaction. We have prepared powder samples of NaxCoO2 x yH2O using a new synthesis route. Superconductivity was observed in Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3H2O between 4 and 5K as indicated by the magnetic susceptibility. The bulk compressibilities of Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3H2O, Na0.3CoO2 x 0.6H2O and Na0.3CoO2 were determined using a diamond anvil cell and synchrotron powder diffraction. The optical conductivity of La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) has been interpreted in various ways, but so far the proposed interpretations have neglected the fact that the holes doped into the NiO(2) planes order in diagonal stripes, as established by neutron and X-ray scattering. Here we present a study of optical conductivity in La(2)NiO(4+d) with d=2/15, a material in which the charge stripes order three-dimensionally. We show that the conductivity can be decomposed into two components, a mid-infrared peak that we attribute to transitions from the filled valence band into empty mid-gap states associated with the stripes, and a Drude peak that appears at higher temperatures as carriers are thermally excited into the mid-gap states. The shift of the mid-IR peak to lower energy with increasing temperature is explained in terms of the Franck-Condon effect. We report a detailed study of the microstructure and defects in sintered polycrystalline MgB2. Both TEM and x-ray data reveal that MgO is the major second-phase in our bulk samples. Although MgB2 and MgO have different crystal symmetries, being P6/mmm and Fm-3m, respectively, their stacking sequence of Mg and B (or O) and lattice spacings in certain crystallographic orientations are very similar. The size of MgO varies from 10~500nm, and its mismatch with the MgB2 matrix can be a source for dislocations. Dislocations in MgB2 often have a Burgers vector of <100>. 1/3<1-10> and 1/3<210> partial dislocations and their associated stacking faults were also observed. Since both dislocations and stacking faults are located in the (001) basal plane, flux pinning anisotropy is expected. Diffuse scattering analysis suggests that the correlation length along the c-axis for defect-free basal planes is about 50nm. (001) twist grain-boundaries, formed by rotations along the c-axis, are major grain boundaries in MgB2 as a result of the out-of-plane weak bonding between Mg and B atoms. An excess of Mg was observed in some grain boundaries. High-resolution nano-probe EELS reveals that there is a difference in near edge structure of the boron K-edge acquired from grain boundaries and grain interiors. The change at the edge threshold may be suggestive of variation of the hole concentration that would significantly alter boundary superconductivity., Comment: 20 pages and 12 figures

High-resolution photoemission is used to study the electronic structure of the cuprate superconductor, Bi2212, as a function of hole doping and temperature. A kink observed in the band dispersion in the nodal direction in the superconducting state is associated with coupling to a resonant mode observed in neutron scattering. From the measured real part of the self energy it is possible to extract a coupling constant which is largest in the underdoped regime, then decreasing continuously into the overdoped regime.

At low temperature the holes doped into the NiO(2) planes of La(2)NiO(4.133) by the excess oxygen collect in diagonal stripes that separate narrow antiferromagnetic domains. The magnetic order drops abruptly to zero at T_m = 110.5 K, but charge order remains with a period of 3a/2. We show that application of a magnetic field in the regime T > T_m induces staggered magnetic order of period 3a due to the net magnetic moment of the high-temperature bond-centered stripes, together with the odd number of Ni spins across an antiferromagnetic domain., Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, 4 epsf figs included with psfigs

The dc resistivity, magnetoresistance and magnetic susceptibility of La(1-x)SrxCoO3 compounds have been investigated in the temperature range of 4K to 300K for magnetic fields up to 7 T. In the doping range studied (0.05 - x - 0.25) the electronic properties of the material exhibit a crossover from semiconducting to metallic behavior. The magnetoresistance is highest in the semiconducting state. A correlation was found between the energy gap determined from the dc conductivity and the energy scale identified from neutron scattering data. Previously we have presented evidence for stripe order of holes and spins in La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4) with x=0.12. Here we show, via neutron diffraction measurements of magnetic scattering, that similar order occurs in crystals with x=0.15 and 0.20. Zero-field-cooled magnetization measurements show that all 3 compositions are also superconducting, with the superconducting transition temperature increasing as the low-temperature staggered magnetization decreases., Comment: REVTEX, 5 pages, 2 col., 4 epsf figures included with psfig.sty
