A complete classification of the multivalued coset groups of order $3$ is given. The proof is based on the classification of rank $3$ groups having regular normal subgroups.

The spectrum of a finite group is the set of orders of its elements. We are concerned with finite groups having the same spectrum as a direct product of nonabelian simple groups with abelian Sylow $2$-subgroups. For every positive integer $k$, we find $k$ nonabelian simple groups with abelian Sylow 2-subgroups such that their direct product is uniquely determined by its spectrum in the class of all finite groups. On the other hand, we prove that there are infinitely many finite groups having the same spectrum as the direct cube of the small Ree group $^2G_2(q)$, $q>3$, or the direct fourth power of the sporadic group $J_1$., Comment: 8 pages

A rank 3 graph is an orbital graph of a rank 3 permutation group of even order. Despite the classification of rank 3 graphs being complete, see, e.g., Chapter 11 of the recent monograph 'Strongly regular graphs' by Brouwer and Van Maldeghem, the full automorphism groups of these graphs (equivalently, the 2-closures of rank 3 groups) have not been explicitly described, though a lot of information on this subject is available. In the present note, we address this problem for the affine rank 3 graphs. We find the automorphism groups for finitely many relatively small graphs and show that modulo known results, this provides the full description of the automorphism groups of the affine rank 3 graphs, thus reducing the general problem to the case when the socle of the automorphism group is nonabelian simple.

Given a permutation group $G$ on a finite set $\Omega$, let $G^{(k)}$ denote the $k$-closure of $G$, that is, the largest permutation group on $\Omega$ having the same orbits in the induced action on $\Omega^k$ as $G$. Recall that a group is $\mathrm{Alt}(d)$-free if it does not contain a section isomorphic to the alternating group of degree $d$. Motivated by some problems in computational group theory, we prove that the $k$-closure of an $\mathrm{Alt}(d)$-free group is again $\mathrm{Alt}(d)$-free for $k \geq 4$ and $d \geq 25$., Comment: 20 pages

Given a set of primes $\pi$, the $\pi$-index of an element $x$ of a finite group $G$ is the $\pi$-part of the index of the centralizer of $x$ in $G$. If $\pi=\{p\}$ is a singleton, we just say the $p$-index. If the $\pi$-index of $x$ is equal to $p_1^{k_1}\ldots p^{k_s}$, where $p_1,\ldots,p_s$ are distinct primes, then we set $\exp_\pi(x)=k_1+\ldots+k_s$. In this short note, we study how the number $\epsilon_\pi(G)=\max\{\epsilon_\pi(x):x\in G\}$ restricts the structure of the factor group $G/Z(G)$ of $G$ by its center. First, for a finite group $G$, we prove that $\phi_p(G/Z(G))\leq\epsilon_p(G)$, where $\phi_p(G/Z(G))$ is the Frattini length of a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G/Z(G)$. Second, for a $\pi$-separable finite group $G$, we prove that $l_\pi(G/Z(G))\leq\epsilon_\pi(G)$, where $l_{\pi}(G/Z(G))$ is the $\pi$-length of $G/Z(G)$.

The spectrum of a group is the set of orders of its elements. Finite groups with the same spectra as the direct squares of the finite simple groups with abelian Sylow 2-subgroups are considered. It is proved that the direct square $J_1\times J_1$ of the sporadic Janko group $J_1$ and the direct squares ${^2}G_2(q)\times{^2}G_2(q)$ of the simple small Ree groups ${^2}G_2(q)$ are uniquely characterized by their spectra in the class of finite groups, while for the direct square $PSL_2(q)\times PSL_2(q)$ of a 2-dimensional simple linear group $PSL_2(q)$, there are always infinitely many groups (even solvable groups) with the same spectra.

The generalized Fitting height $h^*(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the least number $h$ such that $\mathrm{F}_h^* (G) = G$, where $\mathrm{F}_{(0)}^* (G) = 1$, and $\mathrm{F}_{(i+1)}^*(G)$ is the inverse image of the generalized Fitting subgroup $\mathrm{F}^*(G/\mathrm{F}^*_{(i)} (G))$. We give an affirmative answer to Problem 20.58(a) from the Kourovka Notebook proving that for every positive integer $k$, the $k$-th direct power of the simple linear group $L_{n}(2)$ is uniquely determined by its spectrum in the class of finite groups provided $n$ is a power of $2$ greater than or equal to $56k^2$., Comment: 17 pages

Let $\mathfrak{X}$ be a class of finite groups closed under subgroups, homomorphic images, and extensions. We study the question which goes back to the lectures of H. Wielandt in 1963-64: For a given $\mathfrak{X}$-subgroup $K$ and maximal $\mathfrak{X}$-subgroup $H$, is it possible to see embeddability of $K$ in $H$ (up to conjugacy) by their projections onto the factors of a fixed subnormal series. On the one hand, we construct examples where $K$ has the same projections as some subgroup of $H$ but is not conjugate to any subgroup of $H$. On the other hand, we prove that if $K$ normalizes the projections of a subgroup $H$, then $K$ is conjugate to a subgroup of $H$ even in the more general case when $H$ is a submaximal $\mathfrak{X}$-subgroup.

We refer to $d(G)$ as the minimal cardinality of a generating set of a finite group $G$, and say that $G$ is $d$-generated if $d(G)\leq d$. A transitive permutation group $G$ is called $\frac{3}{2}$-transitive if a point stabilizer $G_\alpha$ is nontrivial and its orbits distinct from $\{\alpha\}$ are of the same size. We prove that $d(G)\leq4$ for every primitive $\frac{3}{2}$-transitive permutation group $G$, moreover, $G$ is $2$-generated except for the very particular solvable affine groups that we completely describe. In particular, all finite $2$-transitive and $2$-homogeneous groups are $2$-generated. We also show that every finite group whose abelian subgroups are cyclic is $2$-generated, and so is every Frobenius complement.

The spectrum $\omega(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the set of orders of its elements. The following sufficient criterion of nonsolvability is proved: if among the prime divisors of the order of a group $G$, there are four different primes such that $\omega(G)$ contains all their pairwise products but not a product of any three of these numbers, then $G$ is nonsolvable. Using this result, we show that for $q\geqslant 8$ and $q\neq 32$, the direct square $Sz(q)\times Sz(q)$ of the simple exceptional Suzuki group $Sz(q)$ is uniquely characterized by its spectrum in the class of finite groups, while for $Sz(32)\times Sz(32)$, there are exactly four finite groups with the same spectrum., Comment: In the third version, Theorem 1 is slightly reformulated and some references are corrected

A Cayley graph over a group $G$ is said to be central if its connection set is a normal subset of $G$. We prove that every central Cayley graph over a simple group $G$ has at most two pairwise nonequivalent Cayley representations over $G$ associated with the subgroups of $Sym(G)$ induced by left and right multiplications of $G$. We also provide an algorithm which, given a central Cayley graph $\Gamma$ over an almost simple group $G$ whose socle is of a bounded index, finds the full set of pairwise nonequivalent Cayley representations of $\Gamma$ over $G$ in time polynomial in size of $G$., Comment: 10 pages

We say that finite groups are isospectral if they have the same sets of orders of elements. It is known that every nonsolvable finite group $G$ isospectral to a finite simple group has a unique nonabelian composition factor, that is, the quotient of $G$ by the solvable radical of $G$ is an almost simple group. The main goal of this paper is prove that this almost simple group is a cyclic extension of its socle. To this end, we consider a general situation when $G$ is an arbitrary group with unique nonabelian composition factor, not necessarily isospectral to a simple group, and study the prime graph of $G$, where the prime graph of $G$ is the graph whose vertices are the prime numbers dividing the order of $G$ and two such numbers $r$ and $s$ are adjacent if and only if $r\neq s$ and $G$ has an element of order $rs$. Namely, we establish some sufficient conditions for the prime graph of such a group to have a vertex adjacent to all other vertices. Besides proving the main result, this allows us to refine a recent result by P. Cameron and N. Maslova concerning finite groups almost recognizable by prime graph.

Let $m$ be a positive integer and let $\Omega$ be a finite set. The $m$-closure of $G\le$Sym$(\Omega)$ is the largest permutation group on $\Omega$ having the same orbits as $G$ in its induced action on the Cartesian product $\Omega^m$. The exact formula for the $m$-closure of the wreath product in product action is given. In this paper the concept of $\mathbb{F}$-functorial of a finite group was introduced. These functorials have many properties of the Fitting subgroup of a soluble group and the generalized Fitting subgroup of a finite group. It was shown that the set of all $\mathbb{F}$-functorials is a complete distributive lattice and the cardinality of this lattice is continuum. The sharp bounds on the generalized Fitting height of mutually permutable product of two subgroups were obtained.

Let $ \sigma$ be a partition of the set of all primes and $\mathfrak{F}$ be a hereditary formation. We described all formations $\mathfrak{F}$ for which the $\mathfrak{F}$-hypercenter and the intersection of weak $K$-$\mathfrak{F}$-subnormalizers of all Sylow subgroups coincide in every group. In particular the formation of all $\sigma$-nilpotent groups has this property. With the help of our results we solve a particular case of L.A.~Shemetkov's problem about the intersection of $\mathfrak{F}$-maximal subgroups and the $\mathfrak{F}$-hypercenter. As corollaries we obtained P. Hall's and R. Baer's classical results about the hypercenter. Let $m$ be a positive integer and let $\Omega$ be a finite set. The $m$-closure of $G\leq\operatorname{Sym}(\Omega)$ is the largest permutation group on $\Omega$ having the same orbits as $G$ in its induced action on the Cartesian product $\Omega^m$. The $1$-closure and $2$-closure of a solvable permutation group need not be solvable. We prove that the $m$-closure of a solvable permutation group is always solvable for $m\geq3$.

In this paper we study the groups all whose maximal or all Sylow subgroups are $K$-$\mathfrak{F}$-subnormal in their product the with generalizations of the Fitting subgroup $\mathrm{F}^*(G)$ and $\mathrm{\tilde F}(G)$. We prove that a hereditary formation $\mathfrak{F}$ contains every group all whose Sylow subgroups are $K$-$\mathfrak{F}$-subnormal in their product with $\mathrm{F}^*(G)$ if and only if $\mathfrak{F}$ is the class of all $\sigma$-nilpotent groups for some partition $\sigma$ of the set of all primes. We obtain a new characterization of the $\sigma$-nilpotent hypercenter, i.e. the $\mathfrak{F}$-hypercenter and the normal largest subgroup which $K$-$\mathfrak{F}$-subnormalize all Sylow subgroups coincide if and only if $\mathfrak{F}$ is the class of all $\sigma$-nilpotent groups.

Recent classification of $\frac{3}{2}$-transitive permutation groups leaves us with three infinite families of groups which are neither $2$-transitive, nor Frobenius, nor one-dimensional affine. The groups of the first two families correspond to special actions of ${\mathrm{PSL}}(2,q)$ and ${\mathrm{P\Gamma L}}(2,q),$ whereas those of the third family are the affine solvable subgroups of ${\mathrm{AGL}}(2,q)$ found by D. Passman in 1967. The association schemes of the groups in each of these families are known to be pseudocyclic. It is proved that apart from three particular cases, each of these exceptional pseudocyclic schemes is characterized up to isomorphism by the tensor of its $3$-dimensional intersection numbers., Comment: 16 pages

A group $G$ is said to be factorized into subsets $A_1, A_2, \ldots, A_s\subseteq G$ if every element $g$ in $G$ can be uniquely represented as $g=g_1g_2\ldots g_s$, where $g_i\in A_i$, $i=1,2,\ldots,s$. We consider the following conjecture: for every finite group $G$ and every factorization $n=ab$ of its order, there is a factorization $G=AB$ with $|A|=a$ and $|B|=b$. We show that a minimal counterexample to this conjecture must be a nonabelian simple group and prove the conjecture for every finite group the nonabelian composition factors of which have orders less than $10\,000$.

The $2$-closure $\overline{G}$ of a permutation group $G$ on $\Omega$ is defined to be the largest permutation group on $\Omega$, having the same orbits on $\Omega\times\Omega$ as $G$. It is proved that if $G$ is supersolvable, then $\overline{G}$ can be found in polynomial time in $|\Omega|$. The exact solution for the free induction decay in a one-dimensional system in the multi-pulse experiment is obtained at both high and low temperatures in the approximation of nearest neighbor interactions. The experimental investigation is performed on a quasi-one-dimensional system of $^{19}$F nuclear spins in a single crystal of fluorapatite. The theoretical results are in a good agreement with the obtained experimental data.

A nonempty class $\mathfrak{X}$ of finite groups is called complete if it is closed under taking subgroups, homomorphic images and extensions. We deal with a classical problem of determining $\mathfrak{X}$-maximal subgroups. We consider two definitions of submaximal $\mathfrak{X}$-subgroups suggested by Wielandt and discuss which one better suits our task. We prove that these definitions are not equivalent yet Wielandt-Hartley's theorem holds true for either definition of $\mathfrak{X}$-submaximality. We also give some applications of the strong version of Wielandt-Hartley's theorem.

The spectrum $\omega(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the set of orders of elements of $G$. We present a polynomial-time algorithm that, given a finite set $\mathcal M$ of positive integers, outputs either an empty set or a finite simple group $G$. In the former case, there is no finite simple group $H$ with $\mathcal{M}=\omega(H)$, while in the latter case, $\mathcal{M}\subseteq\omega(G)$ and $\mathcal{M}\neq\omega(H)$ for all finite simple groups $H$ with $\omega(H)\neq\omega(G)$.

A graph is split if there is a partition of its vertex set into a clique and an independent set. The present paper is devoted to the splitness of some graphs related to finite simple groups, namely, prime graphs and solvable graphs, and their compact forms. Our result contains as special cases the Frobenius theorem (1895) on the number of solutions to the equation $x^n=1$ in a group, the Solomon theorem (1969) on the number of solutions in a group to a system of equations having fewer equations than unknowns, and the Iwasaki theorem (1985) on roots of subgroups. We refer to the set of the orders of elements of a finite group as its spectrum and say that finite groups are isospectral if their spectra coincide. In the paper we determine all finite groups isospectral to the simple groups $S_6(q)$, $O_7(q)$, and $O_8^+(q)$. In particular, we prove that with just four exceptions, every such a finite group is an extension of the initial simple group by a (possibly trivial) field automorphism.

We study possible cases of complex simple graded Lie algebras of depth 2, which are the Tanaka prolongations of pseudo $H$-type Lie algebras arising through representation of Clifford algebras. We show that the complex simple Lie algebras of type $B_n$ with $|2|$-grading do not contain non-Heisenberg pseudo $H$-type Lie algebras as their negative nilpotent part, while the complex simple Lie algebras of types $A_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$ provide such a possibility. Among exceptional algebras only $F_4$ and $E_6$ contain non-Heisenberg pseudo $H$-type Lie algebras as their negative part of $|2|$-grading. Let $G$ be a locally finite group and $F(G)$ the Hirsch--Plotkin radical of $G$. Denote by $S$ the full inverse image of the generalized Fitting subgroup of $G/F(G)$ in $G$. Assume that there is a number $k$ such that the length of every chain of nested centralizers in $G$ does not exceed $k$. The Borovik--Khukhro conjecture states, in particular, that under this assumption the quotient $G/S$ contains an abelian subgroup of index bounded in terms of $k$. We disprove this statement and prove some its weaker analog.

Multiple quantum (MQ) NMR methods \cite{Baum} are applied to the analysis of various problems of quantum information processing. It is shown that the two-spin/two-quantum Hamiltonian \cite{Baum} describing MQ NMR dynamics is related to the flip-flop Hamiltonian of a one-dimensional spin system in the approximation of the nearest neighbor interactions. As a result, it is possible to organize quantum state transfer along a linear chain. MQ NMR experiments are performed on quasi-one-dimensional chains of \BPChem{\^{19}F} nuclei in calcium fluorapatite \BPChem{Ca\_5(PO\_4)\_3F}. Relaxation of the MQ NMR coherences is considered as the simplest model of decoherence processes. A theory of the dipolar relaxation of the MQ NMR coherences in one-dimensional systems is developed. Optical interconnects play a key role in the implementation of high-speed short-reach communication links within high-performance electronic systems. Multimode polymer waveguides in particular are strong candidates for use in passive optical backplanes as they can be cost-effectively integrated onto standard PCBs. Various optical backplanes using this technology and featuring a large number of multimode polymer waveguide components have been recently demonstrated. The optimisation of the loss performance of these complex waveguide layouts becomes particularly important at high data rates (>=25 Gb/s) due to the associated stringent power budget requirements. Moreover, launch conditions have to be carefully considered in such systems due to the highly-multimoded nature of this waveguide technology. In this paper therefore, we present thorough loss and bandwidth studies on siloxane-based multimode waveguides and waveguide components (i.e. bends and crossings) that enable the implementation of passive optical backplanes. The performance of these components is experimentally investigated under different launch conditions for different waveguide profiles that can be readily achieved through fabrication. Useful design rules on the use of waveguide bends and crossings are derived for each waveguide type. It is shown that the choice of waveguide parameters depends on the particular waveguide layout, assumed launch conditions and desired link bandwidth. As an application of these studies, the obtained results are employed to optimise the loss performance of a 10-card shuffle router and enable >=40 Gb/s data transmission., Comment: 7 pages, 12 figures

Optical interconnects have attracted significant research interest for use in short-reach board-level optical communication links in supercomputers and data centres. Multimode polymer waveguides in particular constitute an attractive technology for on-board optical interconnects as they provide high bandwidth, offer relaxed alignment tolerances, and can be cost-effectively integrated onto standard printed circuit boards (PCBs). However, the continuing improvements in bandwidth performance of optical sources make it important to investigate approaches to develop high bandwidth polymer waveguides. In this paper, we present dispersion studies on a graded-index (GI) waveguide in siloxane materials designed to deliver high bandwidth over a range of launch conditions. Bandwidth-length products of >70 GHzxm and ~65 GHzxm are observed using a 50/125 um multimode fibre (MMF) launch for input offsets of +/- 10 um without and with the use of a mode mixer respectively; and enhanced values of >100 GHzxm are found under a 10x microscope objective launch for input offsets of ~18 x 20 um^2. The large range of offsets is within the -1 dB alignment tolerances. A theoretical model is developed using the measured refractive index profile of the waveguide, and general agreement is found with experimental bandwidth measurements. The reported results clearly demonstrate the potential of this technology for use in high-speed board-level optical links, and indicate that data transmission of 100 Gb/s over a multimode polymer waveguide is feasible with appropriate refractive index engineering., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

Let $\mathfrak F$ be a class of groups. A group $G$ is called $ca$-$\mathfrak F$-group if its every non-abelian chief factor is simple and $H/K \leftthreetimes C_G(H/K) \in \mathfrak F$ for every abelian chief factor $H/K$ of $G$. In this paper, we investigate the structure of a finite $ca$-$\mathfrak F$-group. Properties of mutually permutable products of finite $ca$-$\mathfrak F$-groups are studied.

In the present paper we study the rigidity of 2-step Carnot groups, or equivalently, of graded 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras. We prove the alternative that depending on bi-dimensions of the algebra, the Lie algebra structure makes it either always of infinite type or generically rigid, and we specify the bi-dimensions for each of the choices. Explicit criteria for rigidity of pseudo $H$- and $J$-type algebras are given. In particular, we establish the relation of the so-called $J^2$-condition to rigidity, and we explore these conditions in relation to pseudo $H$-type algebras., Comment: Except for minor polishing this version is enriched with two appendices concerning pseudo H-type algebras with J^2-condition. The Cartan scheme $\cal X$ of a finite group $G$ with a $(B,N)$-pair is defined to be the coherent configuration associated with the action of $G$ on the right cosets of the Cartan subgroup $B\cap N$ by the right multiplications. It is proved that if $G$ is a simple group of Lie type, then asymptotically, the coherent configuration $\cal X$ is 2-separable, i.e., the array of 2-dimensional intersection numbers determines $\cal X$ up to isomorphism. It is also proved that in this case, the base number of $\cal X$ equals 2. This enables us to construct a polynomial-time algorithm for recognizing the Cartan schemes when the rank of $G$ and order of the underlying field are sufficiently large. In this paper we introduced an arithmetic graph function which associates with every group G the directed graph whose vertices corresponds to the divisors of |G|. With the help of such functions we introduced arithmetic graphs of classes of groups, in particular of hereditary saturated formations. We formulated the problem of the recognition of classes of groups by arithmetic graph functions and investigated this problem for some arithmetic graph functions.

It was realized recently that the chordal, radial and dipolar SLEs are special cases of a general slit holomorphic stochastic flow. We characterize those slit holomorphic stochastic flows which generate level lines of the Gaussian free field. In particular, we describe the modifications of the Gaussian free field (GFF) corresponding to the chordal and dipolar SLE with drifts. Finally, we develop a version of conformal field theory based on the background charge and Dirichlet boundary condition modifications of GFF and present martingale-observables for these types of SLEs.

The metric approach to studying 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras by making use of non-degenerate scalar products is realised. We show that any 2-step nilpotent Lie algebra is isomorphic to its standard pseudo-metric form, that is a 2-step nilpotent Lie algebra endowed with some standard non-degenerate scalar product compatible with Lie brackets. This choice of the standard pseudo-metric form allows to study the isomorphism properties. If the elements of the centre of the standard pseudo-metric form constitute a Lie triple system of the pseudo-orthogonal Lie algebra, then the original 2-step nilpotent Lie algebra admits integer structure constants. Among particular applications we prove that pseudo $H$-type algebras have bases with rational structural constants, which implies that the corresponding pseudo $H$-type groups admit lattices., Comment: 50 pages

We consider a coupling of the Gaussian free field with slit holomorphic stochastic flows, called ($\delta,\sigma$)-SLE, which contains known SLE processes (chordal, radial, and dipolar) as particular cases. In physical terms, we study a free boundary conformal field theory with one scalar bosonic field, where Green's function is assumed to have some general regular harmonic part. We establish which of these models allow coupling with ($\delta,\sigma$)-SLE, or equivalently, when the correlation functions induce local ($\delta,\sigma$)-SLE martingales (martingale observables).

The aim of our paper is to construct pseudo $H$-type algebras from the covering free nilpotent two-step Lie algebra as the quotient algebra by an ideal. We propose an explicit algorithm of construction of such an ideal by making use of a non-degenerate scalar product. Moreover, as a bypass result, we recover the existence of a rational structure on pseudo $H$-type algebras, which implies the existence of lattices on the corresponding pseudo $H$-type Lie groups. Our approach substantially uses combinatorics and reveals the interplay of pseudo $H$-type algebras with combinatorial and orthogonal designs. One of the key tools is the family of Hurwitz-Radon orthogonal matrices.

Finite groups are said to be isospectral if they have the same sets of element orders. A finite nonabelian simple group $L$ is said to be almost recognizable by spectrum if every finite group isospectral to $L$ is an almost simple group with socle isomorphic to $L$. It is known that all finite simple sporadic, alternating and exceptional groups of Lie type, except $J_2$, $A_6$, $A_{10}$ and $^3D_4(2)$, are almost recognizable by spectrum. The present paper is the final step in the proof of the following conjecture due to V.D. Mazurov: there exists a positive integer $d_0$ such that every finite simple classical group of dimension larger than $d_0$ is almost recognizable by spectrum. Namely, we prove that a nonabelian composition factor of a~finite group isospectral to a finite simple symplectic or orthogonal group $L$ of dimension at least 10, is either isomorphic to $L$ or not a group of Lie type in the same characteristic as $L$, and combining this result with earlier work, we deduce that Mazurov's conjecture holds with $d_0=60$., Comment: 13 pages

We study Fuglede's $p$-module of systems of measures in condensers in Euclidean spaces and on polarizable Carnot groups. We apply and generalize a result by Rodin, which provides an explicit method for finding the extremal function and the 2-module of a foliated family of curves in $\mathbb R^2$, to a variety of settings. In the planar case, we apply Rodin's method to obtain estimates for the conformal module of a parallelogram and of a ring domain using directional dilatations. In $\mathbb R^n,$ we identify the extremal function and compute the $p$-module of images of families of connecting curves and of separating sets with respect to the plates of a condenser under homeomorphisms of certain regularity. Then we calculate the module and find the extremal measures for the spherical ring domain on polarizable Carnot groups and extend Rodin's theorem to the spherical ring domain on the Heisenberg group.

The Loewner equation is known as a one-dimensional reduction of the Benney chain as well as the dispersionless KP hierarchy. We propose a reverse process showing that time splitting in the Loewner or the Loewner-Kufarev equation leads to some known integrable systems.
