In this work, we investigate the single-photon transport through two whispering gallery resonators (WGRs) coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. Using Green's function formalism, we compute the transmission spectra and the photonic density of states (DOS) for the stationary states. We also obtain the formation of two types of bound states in the continuum (BICs). The first kind is localized into the WGR and are symmetry-protected BICs. In contrast, the second depends on the distance between resonators through the waveguide and is of the Fabry-Perot kind. These BICs are represented as Dirac delta functions in the local density of states. Additionally, we show that quasi-BICs manifest as sharp resonances in photonic transmission due to small symmetry-breaking perturbations. Furthermore, we investigate the dynamics of a single-photon wave packet interacting with the WGRs and analyze the mechanism for storing the wave packet in the structure formed by the WGRs and the finite waveguide between them., Comment: 14 pages and 12 figures

Static or frozen disorder, characterised by spatial heterogeneities, influences diverse complex systems, encompassing many-body systems, equilibrium and nonequilibrium states of matter, intricate network topologies, biological systems, and wave-matter interactions. While static disorder has been thoroughly examined, delving into evolving disorder brings increased intricacy to the issue. An example of this complexity is the observation of stochastic acceleration of electromagnetic waves in evolving media, where noisy fluctuations in the propagation medium transfer effective momentum to the wave. Here, we investigate elastic wave propagation in a one-dimensional heterogeneous medium with diagonal disorder. We examine two types of complex elastic materials: one with static disorder, where mass density randomly varies in space, and the other with evolving disorder, featuring random variations in both space and time. Our results indicate that evolving disorder enhances the propagation speed of Gaussian pulses compared to static disorder. Additionally, we demonstrate that the enhanced speed effect also occurs when the medium evolves chaotically rather than randomly over time. We study the quantum correlations embedded in open quantum Rabi systems. Specifically, we study how the quantum correlation depends on the coupling strength, number of qubits, and reservoir temperatures. We numerically calculate the quantum correlations of up to three qubits interacting with a single field mode. We find that the embedded quantum correlations exhibit a maximum for a given coupling strength, which depends inversely on the number of subsystems and the reservoir temperature. We explore how this feature affects the performance of a many-qubit Otto heat engine, finding numerical evidence of a direct correspondence between the minimum of the extractable work and the maximum of the embedded quantum correlations in the qubit-cavity bi-partition. Furthermore, as we increase the number of qubits, the maximum extractable work is reached at smaller values of the coupling strength. The crisis caused by the COVID-19 outbreak around the globe raised an increasing concern about the ongoing emergence of variants of SARS-CoV-2 that may evade the immune response provided by vaccines. New variants appear due to mutation, and as the cases accumulate, the probability of the emergence of a variant of concern increases. In this article, we propose a modified SIR model with waning immunity that captures the competition of two strain classes of an infectious disease under the effect of vaccination with a highly contagious and deadly strain class emerging from a prior strain due to mutation. When these strains compete for a limited supply of susceptible individuals, changes in the efficiency of vaccines may affect the behaviour of the disease in a non-trivial way, resulting in complex outcomes. We characterise the parameter space including intrinsic parameters of the disease, and using the vaccine efficiencies as control variables. We find different types of transcritical bifurcations between endemic fixed points and a disease-free equilibrium and identify a region of strain competition where the two strain classes coexist during a transient period. We show that a strain can be extinguished either due to strain competition or vaccination, and we obtain the critical values of the efficiency of vaccines to eradicate the disease. Numerical studies using parameters estimated from publicly reported data agree with our theoretical results. We show that photon wave packets can be manipulated and reshaped in various ways by a quantum junction comprising a set of three-level atoms coupling two waveguides. We consider atomic nodes with the $\Lambda$-scheme of allowed optical transitions, one of which is driven by an external classical control field. Addressing the dynamics of wave packets in such a system, we demonstrate that a photon pulse can be either stored partially in the junction, delayed by a controlled time, split into several parts, or routed into one of the selected output channels. We argue, therefore, that our proposed design is a promising prototype of a multipurpose quantum junction., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

We propose an efficient single-photon router comprising two resonator waveguide channels coupled by several sequential cavities with embedded three-level atoms. We show that the system can operate as a perfect four-way single-photon switch. We also demonstrate that an incident single-photon propagating in one of the waveguides can be routed into one or the other output channels; such routing can be controlled by the external classical electromagnetic field driving the atoms. We argue that, under appropriate conditions, the efficiency of such routing can be close to 100\% within a broad operational bandwidth, suggesting various applications in photonics., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures
