Advanced Krylov subspace methods are investigated for the solution of large sparse linear systems arising from stiff adjoint-based aerodynamic shape optimization problems. A special attention is paid to the flexible inner-outer GMRES strategy combined with most relevant preconditioning and deflation techniques. The choice of this specific class of Krylov solvers for challenging problems is based on its outstanding convergence properties. Typically in our implementation the efficiency of the preconditioner is enhanced with a domain decomposition method with overlapping. However, maintaining the performance of the preconditioner may be challenging since scalability and efficiency of a preconditioning technique are properties often antagonistic to each other. In this paper we demonstrate how flexible inner-outer Krylov methods are able to overcome this critical issue. A numerical study is performed considering either a Finite Volume (FV), or a high-order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization which affect the arithmetic intensity and memory-bandwith of the algebraic operations. We consider test cases of transonic turbulent flows with RANS modelling over the two-dimensional supercritical OAT15A airfoil and the three-dimensional ONERA M6 wing. Benefits in terms of robustness and convergence compared to standard GMRES solvers are obtained. Strong scalability analysis shows satisfactory results. This letter further explores the recent scheme of switched quantum channels with indefinite causal order applied to the reference metrological task of quantum phase estimation in the presence of noise. We especially extend the explorations, previously reported with depolarizing noise and thermal noise, to the class of Pauli noises, important to the qubit and not previously addressed. Nonstandard capabilities, not accessible with standard quantum phase estimation, are exhibited and analyzed, with significant properties that are specific to the Pauli noises, while other properties are found in common with the depolarizing noise or the thermal noise. The results show that the presence and the type of quantum noise are both crucial to the determination of the nonstandard capabilities from the switched channel with indefinite causal order, with a constructive action of noise reminiscent of stochastic resonance phenomena. The study contributes to a more comprehensive and systematic characterization of the roles and specificities of quantum noise in the operation of the novel devices of switched quantum channels with indefinite causal order., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 22 references

Robust and efficient solvers for coupled-adjoint linear systems are crucial to successful aerostructural optimization. Monolithic and partitioned strategies can be applied. The monolithic approach is expected to offer better robustness and efficiency for strong fluid-structure interactions. However, it requires a high implementation cost and convergence may depend on appropriate scaling and initialization strategies. On the other hand, the modularity of the partitioned method enables a straightforward implementation while its convergence may require relaxation. In addition, a partitioned solver leads to a higher number of iterations to get the same level of convergence as the monolithic one. The objective of this paper is to accelerate the fluid-structure coupled-adjoint partitioned solver by considering techniques borrowed from approximate invariant subspace recycling strategies adapted to sequences of linear systems with varying right-hand sides. Indeed, in a partitioned framework, the structural source term attached to the fluid block of equations affects the right-hand side with the nice property of quickly converging to a constant value. We also consider deflation of approximate eigenvectors in conjunction with advanced inner-outer Krylov solvers for the fluid block equations. We demonstrate the benefit of these techniques by computing the coupled derivatives of an aeroelastic configuration of the ONERA-M6 fixed wing in transonic flow. For this exercise the fluid grid was coupled to a structural model specifically designed to exhibit a high flexibility. All computations are performed using RANS flow modeling and a fully linearized one-equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. We introduce a calculus of extensional resource terms. These are resource terms \`a la Ehrhard-Regnier, but in infinitely eta-long form. The calculus still retains a finite syntax and dynamics: in particular, we prove strong confluence and normalization. Then we define an extensional version of Taylor expansion, mapping ordinary lambda-terms to (possibly infinite) linear combinations of extensional resource terms: like in the ordinary case, the dynamics of our resource calculus allows us to simulate the beta-reduction of lambda-terms; the extensional nature of this expansion shows in the fact that we are also able to simulate eta-reduction. In a sense, extensional resource terms contain a language of finite approximants of Nakajima trees, much like ordinary resource terms can be seen as a richer version of finite B\"ohm trees. We show that the equivalence induced on lambda-terms by the normalization of extensional Taylor-expansion is nothing but H*, the greatest consistent sensible lambda-theory - which is also the theory induced by Nakajima trees. This characterization provides a new, simple way to exhibit models of H*: it becomes sufficient to model the extensional resource calculus and its dynamics. The extensional resource calculus moreover allows us to recover, in an untyped setting, a connection between Taylor expansion and game semantics that was previously limited to the typed setting. Indeed, simply typed, eta-long, beta-normal resource terms are known to be in bijective correspondence with plays in the sense of Hyland-Ong game semantics, up to Melli\`es' homotopy equivalence. Extensional resource terms are the appropriate counterpart of eta-long resource terms in an untyped setting: we spell out the bijection between normal extensional resource terms and isomorphism classes of augmentations (a canonical presentation of plays up to homotopy) in the universal arena.

As shown by Tsukada and Ong, simply-typed, normal and eta-long resource terms correspond to plays in Hyland-Ong games, quotiented by Melli\`es' homotopy equivalence. The original proof of this inspiring result is indirect, relying on the injectivity of the relational model w.r.t. both sides of the correspondence -- in particular, the dynamics of the resource calculus is taken into account only via the compatibility of the relational model with the composition of normal terms defined by normalization. In the present paper, we revisit and extend these results. Our first contribution is to restate the correspondence by considering causal structures we call augmentations, which are canonical representatives of Hyland-Ong plays up to homotopy. This allows us to give a direct and explicit account of the connection with normal resource terms. As a second contribution, we extend this account to the reduction of resource terms: building on a notion of strategies as weighted sums of augmentations, we provide a denotational model of the resource calculus, invariant under reduction. A key step -- and our third contribution -- is a categorical model we call a resource category, which is to the resource calculus what differential categories are to the differential lambda-calculus., Comment: extended version

Quantum noise or decoherence is a major factor impacting the performance of quantum technologies. On the qubit, an important quantum noise, often relevant in practice, is the thermal noise or generalized amplitude damping noise, describing the interaction with a thermal bath at an arbitrary temperature. A qubit thermal noise however cannot be modeled nor directly simulated with a few elementary Pauli operators, but instead requires specific operators. Our main goal here is to construct a circuit model for simulating the thermal noise from standard elementary qubit operators. Starting from a common quantum-operation model based on Kraus operators and an associated qubit-environment model, we derive a proper Stinespring dilated representation for the thermal noise. This dilated unitary model is then decomposed in terms of simple elementary qubit operators, and converted into a circuit based on elementary quantum gates. We arrive at our targeted simulator circuit for the thermal noise, coming with built-in easy control on the noise parameters. The noise simulator is then physically implemented and tested on an IBM-Q quantum processor. The simulator represents a useful addition to existing libraries of quantum circuits for quantum processors, and it offers a new tool for investigating quantum signal and information processing having to cope with thermal noise., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 47 references

A switched quantum channel with indefinite causal order is studied for the fundamental metrological task of phase estimation on a qubit unitary operator affected by quantum thermal noise. Specific capabilities are reported in the switched channel with indefinite order, not accessible with conventional estimation approaches with definite order. Phase estimation can be performed by measuring the control qubit alone, although it does not actively interact with the unitary process -- only the probe qubit doing so. Also, phase estimation becomes possible with a fully depolarized input probe or with an input probe aligned with the rotation axis of the unitary, while this is never possible with conventional approaches. The present study extends to thermal noise, investigations previously carried out with the more symmetric and isotropic qubit depolarizing noise, and it contributes to the timely exploration of properties of quantum channels with indefinite causal order relevant to quantum signal and information processing., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 52 references

A generic qubit unitary operator affected by quantum noise is duplicated and inserted in a coherently superposed channel, superposing two paths offered to a probe qubit across the noisy unitary, and driven by a control qubit. A characterization is performed of the transformation realized by the superposed channel on the joint state of the probe-control qubit pair. The superposed channel is then specifically analyzed for the fundamental metrological task of phase estimation on the noisy unitary, with the performance assessed by the Fisher information, classical or quantum. A comparison is made with conventional estimation techniques and also with a quantum switched channel with indefinite causal order recently investigated for a similar task of phase estimation. In the analysis here, a first important observation is that the control qubit of the superposed channel, although it never directly interacts with the unitary being estimated, can nevertheless be measured alone for effective estimation, while discarding the probe qubit that interacts with the unitary. This property is also present with the switched channel but is inaccessible with conventional techniques. The optimal measurement of the control qubit here is characterized in general conditions. A second important observation is that the noise plays an essential role in coupling the control qubit to the unitary, and that the control qubit remains operative for phase estimation at very strong noise, even with a fully depolarizing noise, whereas conventional estimation and the switched channel become inoperative in these conditions. In asynchronous games, Melli{\`e}s proved that innocent strategies are positional: their behaviour only depends on the position, not the temporal order used to reach it. This insightful result shaped our understanding of the link between dynamic (i.e. game) and static (i.e. relational) semantics. In this paper, we investigate the positionality of innocent strategies in the traditional setting of Hyland-Ong-Nickau-Coquand pointer games. We show that though innocent strategies are not positional, total finite innocent strategies still enjoy a key consequence of positionality, namely positional injectivity: they are entirely determined by their positions. Unfortunately, this does not hold in general: we show a counterexample if finiteness and totality are lifted. For finite partial strategies we leave the problem open; we show however the partial result that two strategies with the same positions must have the same P-views of maximal length.

A generic qubit unitary operator affected by depolarizing noise is duplicated and inserted in a quantum switch process realizing a superposition of causal orders. The characterization of the resulting switched quantum channel is worked out for its action on the joint state of the probe-control qubit pair. The switched channel is then specifically investigated for the important metrological task of phase estimation on the noisy unitary operator, with the performance assessed by the Fisher information, classical or quantum. A comparison is made with conventional techniques of estimation where the noisy unitary is directly probed in a one-stage or two-stage cascade with definite order, or several uses of them with two or more qubits. In the switched channel with indefinite order, specific properties are reported, meaningful for estimation and not present with conventional techniques. It is shown that the control qubit, although it never directly interacts with the unitary, can nevertheless be measured alone for effective estimation, while discarding the probe qubit that interacts with the unitary. Also, measurement of the control qubit maintains the possibility of efficient estimation in difficult conditions where conventional estimation becomes less efficient, as with ill-configured input probes, or in blind situations when the axis of the unitary is unknown. Effective estimation by measuring the control qubit remains possible even when the input probe tends to align with the axis of the unitary, or with a fully depolarized input probe, while in these conditions conventional estimation gets inoperative. Measurement of the probe qubit of the switched channel is also shown to add useful capabilities for phase estimation. Diabetes affects more than 425 million people worldwide, a scale approaching pandemic proportion. Diabetes represents a major risk factor for stroke, and therefore is actively addressed for stroke prevention. However, how diabetes affects stroke severity has not yet been extensively considered, which is surprising given the evident but understudied common mechanistic features of both pathologies. The increase in number of diabetic people, in the incidence of stroke in presence of this specific risk factor, and the exacerbation of ischemic brain damage in diabetic conditions (at least in animal models) warrant the need to integrate this comorbidity in pre-clinical studies of brain ischemia to develop novel therapeutic approaches. Therefore, a better understanding of the commonalties involved in the course of both diseases would offer the promise of discovering novel neuroprotective pathways that would be more appropriated to clinical situations. The package BeyondBenford compares the goodness of fit of Benford's and Blondeau Da Silva's (BDS's) digit distributions in a dataset. The package is used to check whether the data distribution is consistent with theoretical distributions highlighted by Blondeau Da Silva or not: this ideal theoretical distribution must be at least approximately followed by the data for the use of BDS's model to be well-founded. It also allows to draw histograms of digit distributions, both observed in the dataset and given by the two theoretical approaches. Finally, it proposes to quantify the goodness of fit via Pearson's chi-squared test.

One of the biggest challenges in medicine is to dampen the pathophysiological stress induced by an episode of ischemia. Such stress, due to various pathological or clinical situations, follows a restriction in blood and oxygen supply to tissue, causing a shortage of oxygen and nutrients that are required for cellular metabolism. Ischemia can cause irreversible damage to target tissue leading to a poor physiological recovery outcome for the patient. Contrariwise, preconditioning by brief periods of ischemia has been shown in multiple organs to confer tolerance against subsequent normally lethal ischemia. By definition, preconditioning of organs must be applied preemptively. This limits the applicability of preconditioning in clinical situations, which arise unpredictably, such as myocardial infarction and stroke. There are, however, clinical situations that arise as a result of ischemia-reperfusion injury, which can be anticipated, and are therefore adequate candidates for preconditioning. Organ and more particularly kidney transplantation, the optimal treatment for suitable patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD), is a predictable surgery that permits the use of preconditioning protocols to prepare the organ for subsequent ischemic/reperfusion stress. It therefore seems crucial to develop appropriate preconditioning protocols against ischemia that will occur under transplantation conditions, which up to now mainly referred to mechanical ischemic preconditioning that triggers innate responses. It is not known if preconditioning has to be applied to the donor, the recipient, or both. No drug/target pair has been envisioned and validated in the clinic. Options for identifying new target/drug pairs involve the use of model animals, such as drosophila, in which some physiological pathways, such as the management of oxygen, are highly conserved across evolution. Oxygen is the universal element of life existence on earth. In this review we focus on a very specific pathway of pharmacological preconditioning identified in drosophila that was successfully transferred to mammalian models that has potential application in human health. Very few mechanisms identified in these model animals have been translated to an upper evolutionary level. Acute neuroprotection in numerous human clinical trials has been an abject failure. Major systemic-and procedural-based issues have subsequently been identified in both clinical trials and preclinical animal model experimentation. As well, issues related to the neuroprotective moiety itself have contributed to clinical trial failures, including late delivery, mono-targeting, low potency and poor tolerability. Conditioning (pre-or post-) strategies can potentially address these issues and are therefore gaining increasing attention as approaches to protect the brain from cerebral ischemia. In principle, conditioning can address concerns of timing (preconditioning could be pre-emptively applied in high-risk patients, and post-conditioning after patients experience an unannounced brain infarction) and signaling (multi-modal). However, acute neuroprotection and conditioning strategies face a common translational issue: a myriad of possibilities exist, but with no strategy to select optimal candidates. In this review, we argue that what is required is a neuroprotective framework to identify the "best" agent(s), at the earliest investigational stage possible. This may require switching mindsets from identifying how neuroprotection can be achieved to determining how neuroprotection can fail, for the vast majority of candidates. Understanding the basis for failure can in turn guide supplementary treatment, thereby forming an evidence-based rationale for selecting combinations of therapies. An appropriately designed in vitro (neuron culture, brain slices) approach, based on increasing the harshness of the ischemic-like insult, can be useful in identifying the "best" conditioner or acute neuroprotective therapy, as well as how the two modalities can be combined to overcome individual limitations. This would serve as a base from which to launch further investigation into therapies required to protect the neurovascular unit in in vivo animal models of cerebral ischemia. Based on these respective approaches, our laboratories suggest that there is merit in examining synaptic activity-and nutraceutical-based preconditioning / acute neuroprotection.

For parameter estimation from an $N$-component composite quantum system, it is known that a separable preparation leads to a mean-squared estimation error scaling as $1/N$ while an entangled preparation can in some conditions afford a smaller error with $1/N^2$ scaling. This quantum superefficiency is however very fragile to noise or decoherence, and typically disappears with any small amount of random noise asymptotically at large $N$. To complement this asymptotic characterization, we characterize how the estimation efficiency evolves as a function of the size $N$ of the entangled system and its degree of entanglement. We address a generic situation of qubit phase estimation, also meaningful for frequency estimation. Decoherence is represented by the broad class of noises commuting with the phase rotation, which includes depolarizing, phase-flip, and thermal quantum noises. In these general conditions, explicit expressions are derived for the quantum Fisher information quantifying the ultimate achievable efficiency for estimation. We confront at any size $N$ the efficiency of the optimal separable preparation to that of an entangled preparation with arbitrary degree of entanglement. We exhibit the $1/N^2$ superefficiency with no noise, and prove its asymptotic disappearance at large $N$ for any non-vanishing noise configuration. For maximizing the estimation efficiency, we characterize the existence of an optimum $N_{\rm opt}$ of the size of the entangled system along with an optimal degree of entanglement. For nonunital noises, maximum efficiency is usually obtained at partial entanglement. Grouping the $N$ qubits into independent blocks formed of $N_{\rm opt}$ entangled qubits restores at large $N$ a nonvanishing efficiency that can improve over that of $N$ independent qubits optimally prepared. We present a review of the most important results in the theory of symmetric functions in superspace (or symmetric superpolynomials), summarizing all principal contributions since its introduction in 2001 in the context of the supersymmetric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland integrable model. We also mention some open problems which remain unanswered at this moment, in particular the connection with representation theory. In addition, we provide a free open access source code, relying on SageMath library, that can be used as a research tool for symmetric superpolynomials. An appropriate probability space enables us to find again in an elegant way some straightforward equalities associated with these arrangements. Resulting inequalities are also brought out. A connection with arrangements of lines in R2 is eventually made, where possible.

In this paper, we will see that the proportion of d as leading digit, d $\in$ 1, 9, in data (obtained thanks to the hereunder developed model) is more likely to follow a law whose probability distribution is determined by a specific upper bound, rather than Benford's Law. These probability distributions fluctuate around Benford's value as can often be observed in the literature in many naturally occurring collections of data (where the physical , biological or economical quantities considered are upper bounded). Knowing beforehand the value of the upper bound can be a way to find a better adjusted law than Benford's one.

The Bernstein vertex operators, which can be used to build recursively the Schur functions, are extended to superspace. Four families of super vertex operators are defined, corresponding to the four natural families of Schur functions in superspace. Combinatorial proofs that the super Bernstein vertex operators indeed build the Schur functions in superspace recursively are provided. We briefly mention a possible realization, in terms of symmetric functions in superspace, of the super-KP hierarchy, where the tau-function naturally expands in one of the super-Schur bases.

The complexities of self-dual normal bases, which are candidates for the lowest complexity basis of some defined extensions, are determined with the help of the number of all but the simple points in well chosen minimal Besicovitch arrangements. In this article, these values are first compared with the expected value of the number of all but the simple points in a minimal randomly selected Besicovitch arrangement in F d 2 for the first 370 prime numbers d. Then, particular minimal Besicovitch arrangements which share several geometrical properties with the arrangements considered to determine the complexity will be considered in two distinct cases.

We derive new fermionic expressions for the characters of the Virasoro minimal models $M(k,2k\pm1)$ by analysing the recently introduced half-lattice paths. These fermionic expressions display a quasiparticle formulation characteristic of the $\phi_{2,1}$ and $\phi_{1,5}$ integrable perturbations. We find that they arise by imposing a simple restriction on the RSOS quasiparticle states of the unitary models $M(p,p+1)$. In fact, four fermionic expressions are obtained for each generating function of half-lattice paths of finite length $L$, and these lead to four distinct expressions for most characters $\chi^{k,2k\pm1}_{r,s}$. These are direct analogues of Melzer's expressions for $M(p,p+1)$, and their proof entails revisiting, reworking and refining a proof of Melzer's identities which used combinatorial transforms on lattice paths. We also derive a bosonic version of the generating functions of length $L$ half-lattice paths, this expression being notable in that it involves $q$-trinomial coefficients. The evaluation of vacuum expectation values (VEVs) in massive integrable quantum field theory (QFT) is a nontrivial renormalization-group "connection problem" -- relating large and short distance asymptotics -- and is in general unsolved. This is particularly relevant in the context of entanglement entropy, where VEVs of branch-point twist fields give universal saturation predictions. We propose a new method to compute VEVs of twist fields associated to continuous symmetries in QFT. The method is based on a differential equation in the continuous symmetry parameter, and gives VEVs as infinite form-factor series which truncate at two-particle level in free QFT. We verify the method by studying U(1) twist fields in free models, which are simply related to the branch-point twist fields. We provide the first exact formulae for the VEVs of such fields in the massive uncompactified free boson model, checking against an independent calculation based on angular quantization. We show that logarithmic terms, overlooked in the original work of Callan and Wilczek [Phys. Lett. B333 (1994)], appear both in the massless and in the massive situations. This implies that, in agreement with numerical form-factor observations by Bianchini and Castro-Alvaredo [Nucl. Phys. B913 (2016)], the standard power-law short-distance behavior is corrected by a logarithmic factor. We give new proofs of the rationality of the N=1 superconformal minimal model vertex operator superalgebras and of the classification of their modules in both the Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond sectors. For this, we combine the standard free field realisation with the theory of Jack symmetric functions. A key role is played by Jack symmetric polynomials with a certain negative parameter that are labelled by admissible partitions. These polynomials are shown to describe free fermion correlators, suitably dressed by a symmetrising factor. The classification proofs concentrate on explicitly identifying Zhu's algebra and its twisted analogue. Interestingly, these identifications do not use an explicit expression for the non-trivial vacuum singular vector. While the latter is known to be expressible in terms of an Uglov symmetric polynomial or a linear combination of Jack superpolynomials, it turns out that standard Jack polynomials (and functions) suffice to prove the classification., Comment: 32 pages, minor tweak to the explanation of notation on p15, updated references, version to appear in Adv. A recent novel derivation of the representation of Virasoro singular vectors in terms of Jack polynomials is extended to the supersymmetric case. The resulting expression of a generic super-Virasoro singular vector is given in terms of a simple differential operator (whose form is characteristic of the sector, Neveu-Schwarz or Ramond) acting on a Jack superpolynomial. The latter is indexed by a superpartition depending upon the two integers r,s that specify the reducible module under consideration. The corresponding singular vector (at grade rs/2), when expanded as a linear combination of Jack superpolynomials, results in an expression that (in addition to being proved) turns out to be more compact than those that have been previously conjectured. As an aside, in relation with the differential operator alluded to above, a remarkable property of the Jack superpolynomials at alpha=-3 is pointed out., Comment: 23 pages

Is it possible for a large sequence of measurements or observations, which support a hypothesis, to counterintuitively decrease our confidence? Can unanimous support be too good to be true? The assumption of independence is often made in good faith, however rarely is consideration given to whether a systemic failure has occurred. Taking this into account can cause certainty in a hypothesis to decrease as the evidence for it becomes apparently stronger. We perform a probabilistic Bayesian analysis of this effect with examples based on (i) archaeological evidence, (ii) weighing of legal evidence, and (iii) cryptographic primality testing. We find that even with surprisingly low systemic failure rates high confidence is very difficult to achieve and in particular we find that certain analyses of cryptographically-important numerical tests are highly optimistic, underestimating their false-negative rate by as much as a factor of $2^{80}$.

We consider the logarithmic negativity, a measure of bipartite entanglement, in a general unitary 1+1-dimensional massive quantum field theory, not necessarily integrable. We compute the negativity between a finite region of length $r$ and an adjacent semi-infinite region, and that between two semi-infinite regions separated by a distance $r$. We show that the former saturates to a finite value, and that the latter tends to zero, as $r\rightarrow\infty$. We show that in both cases, the leading corrections are exponential decays in $r$ (described by modified Bessel functions) that are solely controlled by the mass spectrum of the model, independently of its scattering matrix. This implies that, like the entanglement entropy, the logarithmic negativity displays a very high level of universality, allowing one to extract information about the mass spectrum. Schur superpolynomials have been introduced recently as limiting cases of the Macdonald superpolynomials. It turns out that there are two natural super-extensions of the Schur polynomials: in the limit $q=t=0$ and $q=t\rightarrow\infty$, corresponding respectively to the Schur superpolynomials and their dual. However, a direct definition is missing. Here, we present a conjectural combinatorial definition for both of them, each being formulated in terms of a distinct extension of semi-standard tableaux. These two formulations are linked by another conjectural result, the Pieri rule for the Schur superpolynomials. Indeed, and this is an interesting novelty of the super case, the successive insertions of rows governed by this Pieri rule do not generate the tableaux underlying the Schur superpolynomials combinatorial construction, but rather those pertaining to their dual versions. As an aside, we present various extensions of the Schur bilinear identity.

An integrable supersymmetric generalization of the trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider model is presented whose symmetry algebra includes the super Poincar\'e algebra. Moreover, its Hamiltonian is showed to be diagonalized by the recently introduced Macdonald superpolynomials. Macdonald superpolynomials provide a remarkably rich generalization of the usual Macdonald polynomials. The starting point of this work is the observation of a previously unnoticed stability property of the Macdonald superpolynomials when the fermionic sector m is sufficiently large: their decomposition in the monomial basis is then independent of m. These stable superpolynomials are readily mapped into bisymmetric polynomials, an operation that spoils the ring structure but drastically simplifies the associated vector space. Our main result is a factorization of the (stable) bisymmetric Macdonald polynomials, called double Macdonald polynomials and indexed by pairs of partitions, into a product of Macdonald polynomials (albeit subject to non-trivial plethystic transformations). As an off-shoot, we note that, after multiplication by a t-Vandermonde determinant, this provides explicit formulas for a large class of Macdonald polynomials with prescribed symmetry. The factorization of the double Macdonald polynomials leads immediately to the generalization of basically every elementary properties of the Macdonald polynomials to the double case (norm, kernel, duality, positivity, etc). When lifted back to superspace, this validates various previously formulated conjectures in the stable regime. The q,t-Kostka coefficients associated to the double Macdonald polynomials are shown to be q,t-analogs of the dimensions of the irreducible representations of the hyperoctahedral group B_n. Moreover, a Nabla operator on the double Macdonald polynomials is defined and its action on a certain bisymmetric Schur function can be interpreted as the Frobenius series of a bigraded module of dimension (2n+1)^n, a formula again characteristic of the Coxeter group of type B_n. A generalization of the Macdonald polynomials depending upon both commuting and anticommuting variables has been introduced recently. The construction relies on certain orthogonality and triangularity relations. Although many superpolynomials were constructed as solutions of highly over-determined system, the existence issue was left open. This is resolved here: we demonstrate that the underlying construction has a (unique) solution. The proof uses, as a starting point, the definition of the Macdonald superpolynomials in terms of the Macdonald non-symmetric polynomials via a non-standard (anti)symmetrization and a suitable dressing by anticommuting monomials. This relationship naturally suggests the form of two family of commuting operators that have the defined superpolynomials as their common eigenfunctions. These eigenfunctions are then shown to be triangular and orthogonal. Up to a normalization, these two conditions uniquely characterize these superpolynomials. Moreover, the Macdonald superpolynomials are found to be orthogonal with respect to a second (constant-term-type) scalar product and its norm is evaluated. The latter is shown to match (up to a q-power) the conjectured norm with respect to the original scalar product. We introduce a conjectural construction for an extension to superspace of the Macdonald polynomials. The construction, which depends on certain orthogonality and triangularity relations, is tested for high degrees. We conjecture a simple form for the norm of the Macdonald polynomials in superspace, and a rather non-trivial expression for their evaluation. We study the limiting cases q=0 and q=\infty, which lead to two families of Hall-Littlewood polynomials in superspace. We also find that the Macdonald polynomials in superspace evaluated at q=t=0 or q=t=\infty seem to generalize naturally the Schur functions. In particular, their expansion coefficients in the corresponding Hall-Littlewood bases appear to be polynomials in t with nonnegative integer coefficients. More strikingly, we formulate a generalization of the Macdonald positivity conjecture to superspace: the expansion coefficients of the Macdonald superpolynomials expanded into a modified version of the Schur superpolynomial basis (the q=t=0 family) are polynomials in q and t with nonnegative integer coefficients., Comment: 18 pages

For a known weak signal in additive white noise, the asymptotic performance of a locally optimum processor (LOP) is shown to be given by the Fisher information (FI) of a standardized even probability density function (PDF) of noise in three cases: (i) the maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain for a periodic signal; (ii) the optimal asymptotic relative efficiency (ARE) for signal detection; (iii) the best cross-correlation gain (CG) for signal transmission. The minimal FI is unity, corresponding to a Gaussian PDF, whereas the FI is certainly larger than unity for any non-Gaussian PDFs. In the sense of a realizable LOP, it is found that the dichotomous noise PDF possesses an infinite FI for known weak signals perfectly processed by the corresponding LOP. We provide an extensive study of the differential properties of the functions $x\mapsto x^{2^t-1}$ over $\F$, for $2 \leq t \leq n-1$. We notably show that the differential spectra of these functions are determined by the number of roots of the linear polynomials $x^{2^t}+bx^2+(b+1)x$ where $b$ varies in $\F$.We prove a strong relationship between the differential spectra of $x\mapsto x^{2^t-1}$ and $x\mapsto x^{2^{s}-1}$ for $s= n-t+1$. As a direct consequence, this result enlightens a connection between the differential properties of the cube function and of the inverse function. We also determine the complete differential spectra of $x \mapsto x^7$ by means of the value of some Kloosterman sums, and of $x \mapsto x^{2^t-1}$ for $t \in \{\lfloor n/2\rfloor, \lceil n/2\rceil+1, n-2\}$., Comment: 2011

The states in the irreducible modules of the minimal models can be represented by infinite lattice paths arising from consideration of the corresponding RSOS statistical models. For the M(p,2p+1) models, a completely different path representation has been found recently, this one on a half-integer lattice; it has no known underlying statistical-model interpretation. The correctness of this alternative representation has not yet been demonstrated, even at the level of the generating functions, since the resulting fermionic characters differ from the known ones. This gap is filled here, with the presentation of two versions of a bijection between the two path representations of the M(p,2p+1) states. In addition, a half-lattice path representation for the M(p+1,2p+1) models is stated, and other generalisations suggested., Comment: 20 pages

We report the regions where a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain exceeding unity exists in a parallel uncoupled array of identical bistable systems, for both subthreshold and suprathreshold sinusoids buried in broadband Gaussian white input noise. Due to independent noise in each element of the parallel array, the SNR gain of the collective array response approaches its local maximum exhibiting a stochastic resonant behavior. Moreover, the local maximum SNR gain, at a non-zero optimal array noise intensity, increases as the array size rises. This leads to the conclusion of the global maximum SNR gain being obtained by an infinite array. We suggest that the performance of infinite arrays can be closely approached by an array of two bistable oscillators operating in different noisy conditions, which indicates a simple but effective realization of arrays for improving the SNR gain. For a given input SNR, the optimization of maximum SNR gains is touched upon in infinite arrays by tuning both array noise levels and an array parameter. The nonlinear collective phenomenon of SNR gain amplification in parallel uncoupled dynamical arrays, i.e. array stochastic resonance, together with the possibility of the SNR gain exceeding unity, represent a promising application in array signal processing., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, MikTex
