The local (z=0.0315) AGN Mrk 817, was monitored over more than 500 days with space-borne and ground-based instruments as part of a large international campaign AGN STORM 2. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of the broad-band continuum variations using detailed modeling of the broad line region (BLR), several types of disk winds classified by their optical depth, and new numerical simulations. We find that diffuse continuum (DC) emission, with additional contributions from strong and broad emission lines, can explain the continuum lags observed in this source during high and low luminosity phases. Disk illumination by the variable X-ray corona contributes only a small fraction of the observed continuum lags. Our BLR models assume radiation pressure-confined clouds distributed over a distance of 2-122 light days. We present calculated mean-emissivity radii of many emission lines, and DC emission, and suggest a simple, transfer-function-dependent method that ties them to cross-correlation lag determinations. We do not find clear indications for large optical depth winds but identify the signature of lower column density winds. In particular, we associate the shortest observed continuum lags with a combination of tau(1 Ryd) approx. 2 wind and a partly shielded BLR. Even smaller optical depth winds may be associated with X-ray absorption features and with noticeable variations in the width and lags of several high ionization lines like HeII and CIV. X-ray reverberation mapping is a powerful technique for probing the innermost accretion disk, whereas continuum reverberation mapping in the UV, optical, and infrared (UVOIR) reveals reprocessing by the rest of the accretion disk and broad-line region (BLR). We present the time lags of Mrk 817 as a function of temporal frequency measured from 14 months of high-cadence monitoring from Swift and ground-based telescopes, in addition to an XMM-Newton observation, as part of the AGN STORM 2 campaign. The XMM-Newton lags reveal the first detection of a soft lag in this source, consistent with reverberation from the innermost accretion flow. These results mark the first simultaneous measurement of X-ray reverberation and UVOIR disk reprocessing lags$\unicode{x2013}$effectively allowing us to map the entire accretion disk surrounding the black hole. Similar to previous continuum reverberation mapping campaigns, the UVOIR time lags arising at low temporal frequencies are longer than those expected from standard disk reprocessing by a factor of 2-3. The lags agree with the anticipated disk reverberation lags when isolating short-timescale variability, namely timescales shorter than the H$\beta$ lag. Modeling the lags requires additional reprocessing constrained at a radius consistent with the BLR size scale inferred from contemporaneous H$\beta$-lag measurements. When we divide the campaign light curves, the UVOIR lags show substantial variations, with longer lags measured when obscuration from an ionized outflow is greatest. We suggest that, when the obscurer is strongest, reprocessing by the BLR elongates the lags most significantly. Over the past three decades, multiple reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns conducted for the quasar PG 2130+099 have exhibited inconsistent findings with time delays ranging from $\sim$10 to $\sim$200 days. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of the geometry and dynamics of the broad-line region (BLR) in PG 2130+099, we continued an ongoing high-cadence RM monitoring campaign using the Calar Alto Observatory 2.2m optical telescope for an extra four years from 2019 to 2022. We measured the time lags of several broad emission lines (including He II, He I, H$\beta$, and Fe II) with respect to the 5100 {\AA} continuum, and their time lags continuously vary through the years. Especially, the H$\beta$ time lags exhibited approximately a factor of two increase in the last two years. Additionally, the velocity-resolved time delays of the broad H$\beta$ emission line reveal a back-and-forth change between signs of virial motion and inflow in the BLR. The combination of negligible ($\sim$10%) continuum change and substantial time-lag variation (over two times) results in significant scatter in the intrinsic $R_{\rm H\beta}-L_{\rm 5100}$ relationship for PG 2130+099. Taking into account the consistent changes in the continuum variability time scale and the size of the BLR, we tentatively propose that the changes in the measurement of the BLR size may be affected by 'geometric dilution'., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk817 during an intensive multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign for 16 months. Here, we examine the behavior of narrow UV absorption lines seen in HST/COS spectra, both during the campaign and in other epochs extending over 14 years. We conclude that while the narrow absorption outflow system (at -3750 km/s with FWHM=177 km/s) responds to the variations of the UV continuum as modified by the X-ray obscurer, its total column density (logNH =19.5 cm-2) did not change across all epochs. The adjusted ionization parameter (scaled with respect to the variations in the Hydrogen ionizing continuum flux) is log UH =-1.0. The outflow is located at a distance smaller than 38 parsecs from the central source, which implies a hydrogen density of nH > 3000 cm-3. The absorption outflow system only covers the continuum emission source and not the broad emission line region, which suggests that its transverse size is small (< 1e16 cm), with potential cloud geometries ranging from spherical to elongated along the line of sight., Comment: 18 pages, 12 Figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results of the XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations taken as part of the ongoing, intensive multi-wavelength monitoring program of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 by the AGN Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping 2 (AGN STORM 2) Project. The campaign revealed an unexpected and transient obscuring outflow, never before seen in this source. Of our four XMM-Newton/NuSTAR epochs, one fortuitously taken during a bright X-ray state has strong narrow absorption lines in the high-resolution grating spectra. From these absorption features, we determine that the obscurer is in fact a multi-phase ionized wind with an outflow velocity of $\sim$5200 km s$^{-1}$, and for the first time find evidence for a lower ionization component with the same velocity observed in absorption features in the contemporaneous HST spectra. This indicates that the UV absorption troughs may be due to dense clumps embedded in diffuse, higher ionization gas responsible for the X-ray absorption lines of the same velocity. We observe variability in the shape of the absorption lines on timescales of hours, placing the variable component at roughly 1000 $R_g$ if attributed to transverse motion along the line of sight. This estimate aligns with independent UV measurements of the distance to the obscurer suggesting an accretion disk wind at the inner broad line region. We estimate that it takes roughly 200 days for the outflow to travel from the disk to our line of sight, consistent with the timescale of the outflow's column density variations throughout the campaign.

We present the rest-frame ultraviolet-optical spectral properties of 65 broad absorption line (BAL) quasars from the Gemini Near Infrared Spectrograph-Distant Quasar Survey (GNIRS-DQS). These properties are compared with those of 195 non-BAL quasars from GNIRS-DQS in order to identify the drivers for the appearance of BALs in quasar spectra. In particular, we compare equivalent widths and velocity widths, as well as velocity offsets from systemic redshifts, of principal emission lines. In spite of the differences between their rest-frame ultraviolet spectra, we find that luminous BAL quasars are generally indistinguishable from their non-BAL counterparts in the rest-frame optical band at redshifts $1.55 \lesssim z \lesssim 3.50$. We do not find any correlation between BAL trough properties and the H$\beta$-based supermassive black hole masses and normalized accretion rates in our sample. Considering the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar sample, which includes the GNIRS-DQS sample, we find that a monochromatic luminosity at rest-frame 2500 A of $\gtrsim 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$ is a necessary condition for launching BAL outflows in quasars. We report first-time reverberation mapping results for 14 AGNs from the ongoing Monitoring AGNs with H$\beta$ Asymmetry campaign (MAHA). These results utilize optical spectra obtained with the Long Slit Spectrograph on the Wyoming Infrared 2.3m Telescope between 2017 November-2023 May. MAHA combines long-duration monitoring with high cadence. We report results from multiple observing seasons for 9 of the 14 objects. These results include H$\beta$ time lags, supermassive black hole masses, and velocity-resolved time lags. An intensive reverberation mapping campaign on the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk817 using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) revealed significant variations in the response of the broad UV emission lines to fluctuations in the continuum emission. The response of the prominent UV emission lines changes over a $\sim$60-day duration, resulting in distinctly different time lags in the various segments of the light curve over the 14 months observing campaign. One-dimensional echo-mapping models fit these variations if a slowly varying background is included for each emission line. These variations are more evident in the CIV light curve, which is the line least affected by intrinsic absorption in Mrk817 and least blended with neighboring emission lines. We identify five temporal windows with distinct emission line response, and measure their corresponding time delays, which range from 2 to 13 days. These temporal windows are plausibly linked to changes in the UV and X-ray obscuration occurring during these same intervals. The shortest time lags occur during periods with diminishing obscuration, whereas the longest lags occur during periods with rising obscuration. We propose that the obscuring outflow shields the ultraviolet broad lines from the ionizing continuum. The resulting change in the spectral energy distribution of the ionizing continuum, as seen by clouds at a range of distances from the nucleus, is responsible for the changes in the line response., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Quasars at $z~{\gtrsim}~1$ most often have redshifts measured from rest-frame ultraviolet emission lines. One of the most common such lines, C IV ${\lambda}1549$, shows blueshifts up to ${\approx}~5000~\rm{km~s^{-1}}$, and in rare cases even higher. This blueshifting results in highly uncertain redshifts when compared to redshift determinations from rest-frame optical emission lines, e.g., from the narrow [O III] ${\lambda}5007$ feature. We present spectroscopic measurements for 260 sources at $1.55~{\lesssim}~z~{\lesssim}~3.50$ having $-28.0~{\lesssim}~M_i~{\lesssim}~-30.0$ mag from the Gemini Near Infrared Spectrograph - Distant Quasar Survey (GNIRS-DQS) catalog, augmenting the previous iteration which contained 226 of the 260 sources whose measurements are improved upon in this work. We obtain reliable systemic redshifts based on [O III] ${\lambda}5007$ for a subset of 121 sources which we use to calibrate prescriptions for correcting UV-based redshifts. These prescriptions are based on a regression analysis involving C IV full-width-at-half-maximum intensity and equivalent width, along with the UV continuum luminosity at a rest-frame wavelength of 1350 A. Applying these corrections can improve the accuracy and the precision in the C IV-based redshift by up to ${\sim}~850~\rm{km~s^{-1}}$ and ${\sim}~150~\rm{km~s^{-1}}$, respectively, which correspond to ${\sim}~8.5$ Mpc and ${\sim}~1.5$ Mpc in comoving distance at $z~=~2.5$. Our prescriptions also improve the accuracy of the best available multi-feature redshift determination algorithm by ${\sim}~100~\rm{km~s^{-1}}$, indicating that the spectroscopic properties of the C IV emission line can provide robust redshift estimates for high-redshift quasars. Weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) are a subset of Type 1 quasars that exhibit extremely weak Ly$\alpha +$N V $\lambda$1240 and/or C IV $\lambda$1549 emission lines. We investigate the relationship between emission-line properties and accretion rate for a sample of 230 `ordinary' Type 1 quasars and 18 WLQs at $z < 0.5$ and $1.5 < z < 3.5$ that have rest-frame ultraviolet and optical spectral measurements. We apply a correction to the H$\beta$-based black-hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) estimates of these quasars using the strength of the optical Fe II emission. We confirm previous findings that WLQs' $M_{\rm BH}$ values are overestimated by up to an order of magnitude using the traditional broad emission-line region size-luminosity relation. With this $M_{\rm BH}$ correction, we find a significant correlation between H$\beta$-based Eddington luminosity ratios and a combination of the rest-frame C IV equivalent width and C IV blueshift with respect to the systemic redshift. This correlation holds for both ordinary quasars and WLQs, which suggests that the two-dimensional C IV parameter space can serve as an indicator of accretion rate in all Type 1 quasars across a wide range of spectral properties., Comment: 17 pages (AASTeX 6.3.1), 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The most reliable single-epoch supermassive black hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) estimates in quasars are obtained by using the velocity widths of low-ionization emission lines, typically the H$\beta$ $\lambda4861$ line. Unfortunately, this line is redshifted out of the optical band at $z\approx1$, leaving $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates to rely on proxy rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) emission lines, such as C IV $\lambda1549$ or Mg II $\lambda2800$, which contain intrinsic challenges when measuring, resulting in uncertain $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates. In this work, we aim at correcting $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates derived from the C IV and Mg II emission lines based on estimates derived from the H$\beta$ emission line. We find that employing the equivalent width of C IV in deriving $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates based on Mg II and C IV provides values that are closest to those obtained from H$\beta$. We also provide prescriptions to estimate $M_{\rm BH}$ values when only C IV, only Mg II, and both C IV and Mg II are measurable. We find that utilizing both emission lines, where available, reduces the scatter of UV-based $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates by $\sim15\%$ when compared to previous studies. Lastly, we discuss the potential of our prescriptions to provide more accurate and precise estimates of $M_{\rm BH}$ given a much larger sample of quasars at $3.20 \lesssim z \lesssim 3.50$, where both Mg II and H$\beta$ can be measured in the same near-infrared spectrum., Comment: 19 pages (AASTeX 6.3.1), 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The AGN STORM 2 collaboration targeted the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 for a year-long multiwavelength, coordinated reverberation mapping campaign including HST, Swift, XMM-Newton, NICER, and ground-based observatories. Early observations with NICER and XMM revealed an X-ray state ten times fainter than historical observations, consistent with the presence of a new dust-free, ionized obscurer. The following analysis of NICER spectra attributes variability in the observed X-ray flux to changes in both the column density of the obscurer by at least one order of magnitude ($N_\mathrm{H}$ ranges from $2.85\substack{+0.48\\ -0.33} \times 10^{22}\text{ cm}^{-2}$ to $25.6\substack{+3.0\\ -3.5} \times 10^{22} \text{ cm}^{-2}$) and the intrinsic continuum brightness (the unobscured flux ranges from $10^{-11.8}$ to $10^{-10.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ ). While the X-ray flux generally remains in a faint state, there is one large flare during which Mrk 817 returns to its historical mean flux. The obscuring gas is still present at lower column density during the flare but it also becomes highly ionized, increasing its transparency. Correlation between the column density of the X-ray obscurer and the strength of UV broad absorption lines suggests that the X-ray and UV continua are both affected by the same obscuration, consistent with a clumpy disk wind launched from the inner broad line region., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, Accepted to ApJ

We present reverberation mapping measurements for the prominent ultraviolet broad emission lines of the active galactic nucleus Mrk817 using 165 spectra obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Our ultraviolet observations are accompanied by X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations as part of the AGN Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Program 2 (AGN STORM 2). Using the cross-correlation lag analysis method, we find significant correlated variations in the continuum and emission-line light curves. We measure rest-frame delayed responses between the far-ultraviolet continuum at 1180 A and Ly$\alpha$ $\lambda1215$ A ($10.4_{-1.4}^{+1.6}$ days), N V $\lambda1240$ A ($15.5_{-4.8}^{+1.0}$days), SiIV + OIV] $\lambda1397$ A ($8.2_{-1.4}^{+1.4}$ days), CIV $\lambda1549$ A ($11.8_{-2.8}^{+3.0}$ days), and HeII $\lambda1640$ A ($9.0_{-1.9}^{+4.5}$ days) using segments of the emission-line profile that are unaffected by absorption and blending, which results in sampling different velocity ranges for each line. However, we find that the emission-line responses to continuum variations are more complex than a simple smoothed, shifted, and scaled version of the continuum light curve. We also measure velocity-resolved lags for the Ly$\alpha$, and CIV emission lines. The lag profile in the blue wing of Ly$\alpha$ is consistent with virial motion, with longer lags dominating at lower velocities, and shorter lags at higher velocities. The CIV lag profile shows the signature of a thick rotating disk, with the shortest lags in the wings, local peaks at $\pm$ 1500 $\rm km\,s^{-1}$, and a local minimum at line center. The other emission lines are dominated by broad absorption lines and blending with adjacent emission lines. We report the results of long-term reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns of the nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) NGC 4151, spanning from 1994 to 2022, based on archived observations of the FAST Spectrograph Publicly Archived Programs and our new observations with the 2.3m telescope at the Wyoming Infrared Observatory. We reduce and calibrate all the spectra in a consistent way, and derive light curves of the broad H$\beta$ line and 5100\,{\AA} continuum. Continuum light curves are also constructed using public archival photometric data to increase sampling cadences. We subtract the host galaxy contamination using {\it HST} imaging to correct fluxes of the calibrated light curves. Utilizing the long-term archival photometric data, we complete the absolute flux-calibration of the AGN continuum. We find that the H$\beta$ time delays are correlated with the 5100\,{\AA} luminosities as $\tau_{\rm H\beta}\propto L_{5100}^{0.46\pm0.16}$. This is remarkably consistent with Bentz et al. (2013)'s global size-luminosity relationship of AGNs. Moreover, the data sets for five of the seasons allow us to obtain the velocity-resolved delays of the H$\beta$ line, showing diverse structures (outflows, inflows and disks). Combining our results with previous independent measurements, we find the measured dynamics of the H$\beta$ broad-line region (BLR) are possibly related to the long-term trend of the luminosity. There is also a possible additional $\sim$1.86 years time lag between the variation in BLR radius and luminosity. In this third paper of the series reporting on the reverberation mapping (RM) campaign of active galactic nuclei with asymmetric H$\beta$ emission-line profiles, we present results for 15 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars using spectra obtained between the end of 2016 to May 2021. This campaign combines long time spans with relatively high cadence. For 8 objects, both the time lags obtained from the entire light curves and the measurements from individual observing seasons are provided. Reverberation mapping of 9 of our targets has been attempted for the first time, while the results for 6 others can be compared with previous campaigns. We measure the H$\beta$ time lags over periods of years and estimate their black hole masses. The long duration of the campaign enables us to investigate their broad line region (BLR) geometry and kinematics for different years by using velocity-resolved lags, which demonstrate signatures of diverse BLR geometry and kinematics. The BLR geometry and kinematics of individual objects are discussed. Determining black hole masses and accretion rates with better accuracy and precision is crucial for understanding quasars as a population. These are fundamental physical properties that underpin models of active galactic nuclei. A primary technique to measure the black hole mass employs the reverberation mapping of low-redshift quasars, which is then extended via the radius-luminosity relationship for the broad-line region to estimate masses based on single-epoch spectra. An updated radius-luminosity relationship incorporates the flux ratio of optical Fe ii to H$\beta$ ($\equiv \mathcal{R}_{\rm Fe}$) to correct for a bias in which more highly accreting systems have smaller line-emitting regions than previously realized. In this current work, we demonstrate and quantify the effect of using this Fe-corrected radius-luminosity relationship on mass estimation by employing archival data sets possessing rest-frame optical spectra over a wide range of redshifts. We find that failure to use a Fe-corrected radius predictor results in overestimated single-epoch black hole masses for the most highly accreting quasars. Their accretion rate measures ($L_{\rm Bol}/ L_{\rm Edd}$ and $\dot{\mathscr{M}}$), are similarly underestimated. The strongest Fe-emitting quasars belong to two classes: high-z quasars with rest-frame optical spectra, which given their extremely high luminosities, require high accretion rates, and their low-z analogs, which given their low black holes masses, must have high accretion rates to meet survey flux limits. These classes have mass corrections downward of about a factor of two, on average. These results strengthen the association of the dominant Eigenvector 1 parameter $\mathcal{R}_{\rm Fe}$ with the accretion process., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 16 pages. Current estimates of the normalized accretion rates of quasars (L/L_Edd), rely on measuring the velocity widths of broad optical-UV emission lines (e.g., H$\beta$ and Mg II $\lambda2800$). However, such lines tend to be weak or inaccessible in the most distant quasars, leading to increasing uncertainty in L/L_Edd estimates at $z > 6$. Utilizing a carefully selected sample of 53 radio-quiet quasars that have H$\beta$ and C IV $\lambda1549$ spectroscopy as well as {\sl Chandra} coverage, we searched for a robust accretion-rate indicator for quasars, particularly at the highest-accessible redshifts ($z \sim 6-7$). Our analysis explored relationships between the H$\beta$-based L/L_Edd, the equivalent width (EW) of C IV, and the optical-to-X-ray spectral slope (a_ox). Our results show that EW(C IV) is the strongest indicator of the H$\beta$-based L/L_Edd parameter, consistent with previous studies, although significant scatter persists particularly for sources with weak C IV lines. We do not find evidence for the a_ox parameter improving this relation, and we do not find a significant correlation between a_ox and H$\beta$-based L/L_Edd. This absence of an improved relationship may reveal a limitation in our sample. X-ray observations of additional luminous sources, found at $z \gtrsim 1$, may allow us to mitigate the biases inherent in our archival sample and test whether X-ray data could improve L/L_Edd estimates. Furthermore, deeper X-ray observations of our sources may provide accurate measurements of the hard-X-ray power-law photon index ($\Gamma$), which is considered an unbiased L/L_Edd indicator. Correlations between EW(C IV) and a_ox with $\Gamma$-based L/L_Edd may yield a more robust prediction of a quasar normalized accretion rate., Comment: 13 pages (aastex62), 4 figures. We present the first results from the ongoing, intensive, multi-wavelength monitoring program of the luminous Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817. While this AGN was, in part, selected for its historically unobscured nature, we discovered that the X-ray spectrum is highly absorbed, and there are new blueshifted, broad and narrow UV absorption lines, which suggest that a dust-free, ionized obscurer located at the inner broad line region partially covers the central source. Despite the obscuration, we measure UV and optical continuum reverberation lags consistent with a centrally illuminated Shakura-Sunyaev thin accretion disk, and measure reverberation lags associated with the optical broad line region, as expected. However, in the first 55 days of the campaign, when the obscuration was becoming most extreme, we observe a de-coupling of the UV continuum and the UV broad emission line variability. The correlation recovers in the next 42 days of the campaign, as Mrk 817 enters a less obscured state. We present a systematic X-ray and multiwavelength study of a sample of 47 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with reverberation-mapping measurements. This sample includes 21 super-Eddington accreting AGNs and 26 sub-Eddington accreting AGNs. Using high-state observations with simultaneous X-ray and UV/optical measurements, we investigate whether super-Eddington accreting AGNs exhibit different accretion disk-corona connections compared to sub-Eddington accreting AGNs. We find tight correlations between the X-ray-to-UV/optical spectral slope parameter ($\alpha_{\rm OX}$) and the monochromatic luminosity at $2500~\r{A}$ ($L_{\rm 2500~\r{A}}$) for both the super- and sub-Eddington subsamples. The best-fit $\alpha_{\rm OX}-L_{\rm 2500~\r{A}}$ relations are consistent overall, indicating that super-Eddington accreting AGNs are not particularly X-ray weak in general compared to sub-Eddington accreting AGNs. We find dependences of $\alpha_{\rm OX}$ on both the Eddington ratio ($L_{\rm Bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$) and black hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) parameters for our full sample. A multi-variate linear regression analysis yields $\alpha_{\rm OX}=-0.13 {\rm log}(L_{\rm Bol}/L_{\rm Edd})-0.10 {\rm log}M_{\rm BH}-0.69$, with a scatter similar to that of the $\alpha_{\rm OX}-L_{\rm 2500~\r{A}}$ relation. The hard (rest-frame $>2\rm ~keV$) X-ray photon index ($\Gamma$) is strongly correlated with $L_{\rm Bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$ for the full sample and the super-Eddington subsample, but these two parameters are not significantly correlated for the sub-Eddington subsample. We present spectroscopic measurements for 226 sources from the Gemini Near Infrared Spectrograph - Distant Quasar Survey (GNIRS-DQS). Being the largest uniform, homogeneous survey of its kind, it represents a flux-limited sample ($m_{i}$ ${\lesssim}$ 19.0 mag, $H$ ${\lesssim}$ 16.5 mag) of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars at 1.5 ${\lesssim}$ $z$ ${\lesssim}$ 3.5 with a monochromatic luminosity (${\lambda}L_{\lambda}$) at 5100 ${\unicode{xC5}}$ in the range of $10^{44} - 10^{46}$ erg $\rm{s}^{-1}$. A combination of the GNIRS and SDSS spectra covers principal quasar diagnostic features, chiefly the C IV ${\lambda}$1549, Mg II ${\lambda}{\lambda}$2798, 2803, H${\beta}$ ${\lambda}$4861, and [O III] ${\lambda}{\lambda}$4959, 5007 emission lines, in each source. The spectral inventory will be utilized primarily to develop prescriptions for obtaining more accurate and precise redshifts, black hole masses, and accretion rates for all quasars. We report the results of reverberation mapping three bright Seyfert galaxies, Mrk 79, NGC 3227, and Mrk 841, from a campaign conducted from December 2016 to May 2017 with the Wyoming Infrared Observatory (WIRO) 2.3-meter telescope. All three of these targets have shown asymmetric broad H$\beta$ emission lines in the past, although their emission lines were relatively symmetric during our observations. We measured H\beta\ time lags for all three targets and estimated masses of their black holes -- for the first time in the case of Mrk 841. For Mrk 79 and NGC 3227, the data are of sufficient quality to resolve distinct time lags as a function of velocity and to compute two-dimensional velocity-delay maps. Mrk 79 shows smaller time lags for high-velocity gas but the distribution is not symmetric, and its complex velocity-delay map could result from the combination of both inflowing and outflowing H\beta\ emitting disks that may be part of a single larger structure. NGC 3227 shows the largest time lags for blueshifted gas and the two-dimensional velocity-delay map suggests a disk with some inflow. We report on the results of a new spectroscopic monitoring campaign of the quasar PG 0026+129 at the Calar Alto Observatory 2.2m telescope from July 2017 to February 2020. Significant variations in the fluxes of the continuum and broad-emission lines, including H$\beta$ and He II, were observed in the first and third years, and clear time lags between them are measured. The broad H$\beta$ line profile consists of two Gaussian components: an intermediate-width H$\beta_{\rm IC}$ with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 1964$\pm$18 $\rm km~s^{-1}$ and another very broad H$\beta_{\rm VBC}$ with a FWHM of 7570$\pm$83 $\rm km~s^{-1}$. H$\beta_{\rm IC}$ has long time lags of $\sim$40--60 days in the rest frame, while H$\beta_{\rm VBC}$ shows nearly zero time delay with respect to the optical continuum at 5100 \AA. The velocity-resolved delays show consistent results: lags of $\sim$30--50 days at the core of the broad H$\beta$ line and roughly zero lags at the wings. H$\beta_{\rm IC}$ has a redshift of $\sim$400 $\rm km~s^{-1}$ which seems to be stable for nearly 30 years by comparing with archived spectra, and may originate from an infall. The root mean square (rms) spectrum of H$\beta_{\rm VBC}$ shows a double-peaked profile with brighter blue peak and extended red wing in the first year, which matches the signature of a thin disk. Both the double-peaked profile and the near-zero lag suggest that H$\beta_{\rm VBC}$ comes from a region associated with the part of the accretion disc that emits the optical continuum. Adopting the FWHM (in the rms spectrum) and the time lag measured for the total H$\beta$ line, and a virial factor of 1.5, we obtain a virial mass of $2.89_{-0.69}^{+0.60} \times10^7 M_{\odot}$ for the central black hole in this quasar., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Radio core dominance measurements, an indicator of jet orientation, sometimes rely on core flux density measurements from large-area surveys like Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm (FIRST) that have an angular resolution of only 5''. Such low-resolution surveys often fail to resolve cores from the extended emission resulting in an erroneous measurement. We focus on investigating this resolution effect for a sample of 119 radio-loud quasars. We obtained continuum observations from NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 10 GHz in A-array with a 0.2'' resolution. Our measurements show that at FIRST spatial resolution, core flux measurements are indeed systematically high even after considering the core-variability. For a handful of quasars, 10 GHz images reveal extended features, whereas the FIRST image shows a point source. We found that the resolution effect is more prominent for quasars with smaller angular sizes. We further computed two radio core dominance parameters R & R5100 for use in statistical orientation investigations with this sample. We also present the spectral energy distributions between 74 MHz and 1.4 GHz, which we used to measure the spectral index of the extended emission of these quasars. Our results empirically confirm that determination of radio core dominance requires high-spatial resolution data. High-redshift quasars typically have their redshift determined from rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) emission lines. However, these lines, and more specifically the prominent C IV $\lambda 1549$ emission line, are typically blueshifted yielding highly uncertain redshift estimates compared to redshifts determined from rest-frame optical emission lines. We present near-infrared spectroscopy of 18 luminous quasars at $2.15 < z < 3.70$ that allows us to obtain reliable systemic redshifts for these sources. Together with near-infrared spectroscopy of an archival sample of 44 quasars with comparable luminosities and redshifts, we provide prescriptions for correcting UV-based redshifts. Our prescriptions reduce velocity offsets with respect to the systemic redshifts by $\sim140$ km s$^{-1}$ and reduce the uncertainty on the UV-based redshift by $\sim25\%$ with respect to the best method currently used for determining such values. We also find that the redshifts determined from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Pipeline for our sources suffer from significant uncertainties, which cannot be easily mitigated. As one of the most interesting Seyfert 1 galaxies, PG 2130+099 has been the target of several reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns over the years. However, its measured broad H$\beta$ line responses have been inconsistent, with time lags of $\sim$200 days, $\sim$25 days, and $\sim$10 days being reported for different epochs while its optical luminosity changed no more than 40%. To investigate this issue, we conducted a new RM-campaign with homogenous and high cadence (about $\sim$3 days) for two years during 2017--2019 to measure the kinematics and structure of the ionized gas. We successfully detected time lags of broad H$\beta$, He II, He I, and Fe II lines with respect to the varying 5100\AA continuum, revealing a stratified structure that is likely virialized with Keplerian kinematics in the first year of observations, but an inflow kinematics of the broad-line region from the second year. With a central black hole mass of $0.97_{-0.18}^{+0.15}\times 10^7~M_{\odot}$, PG 2130+099 has an accretion rate of $10^{2.1\pm0.5}L_{\rm Edd}c^{-2}$, where $L_{\rm Edd}$ is the Eddington luminosity and $c$ is speed of light, implying that it is a super-Eddington accretor and likely possesses a slim, rather than thin, accretion disk. We report the discovery of extreme X-ray variability in a type 1 quasar: SDSS J$075101.42+291419.1$. It has a black hole mass of $1.6\times 10^7~\rm M_\odot$ measured from reverberation mapping (RM), and the black hole is accreting with a super-Eddington accretion rate. Its XMM-Newton observation in 2015 May reveals a flux drop by a factor of $\sim 22$ with respect to the Swift observation in 2013 May when it showed a typical level of X-ray emission relative to its UV/optical emission. The lack of correlated UV variability results in a steep X-ray-to-optical power-law slope ($\alpha_{\rm OX}$) of -1.97 in the low X-ray flux state, corresponding to an X-ray weakness factor of 36.2 at rest-frame 2 keV relative to its UV/optical luminosity. The mild UV/optical continuum and emission-line variability also suggest that the accretion rate did not change significantly. A single power-law model modified by Galactic absorption describes well the $0.3-10$ keV spectra of the X-ray observations in general. The spectral fitting reveals steep spectral shapes with $\Gamma\approx3$. We search for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with such extreme X-ray variability in the literature and find that most of them are narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars with high accretion rates. The fraction of extremely X-ray variable objects among super-Eddington accreting AGNs is estimated to be $\approx 15-24\%$. We discuss two possible scenarios, disk reflection and partial covering absorption, to explain the extreme X-ray variability of SDSS J$075101.42+291419.1$. We analyze a set of optical-to-near-infrared long-slit nuclear spectra of 16 infrared-luminous spiral galaxies. All of the studied sources present H$_2$ emission, which reflects the star-forming nature of our sample, and they clearly display H I emission lines in the optical. Their continua contain many strong stellar absorption lines, with the most common features due to Ca I, Ca II, Fe I, Na I, Mg I, in addition to prominent absorption bands of TiO, VO, ZrO, CN and CO. We report a homogeneous set of equivalent width (EW) measurements for 45 indices, from optical to NIR species for the 16 star-forming galaxies as well as for 19 early type galaxies where we collected the data from the literature. This selected set of emission and absorption-feature measurements can be used to test predictions of the forthcoming generations of stellar population models. We find correlations among the different absorption features and propose here correlations between optical and NIR indices, as well as among different NIR indices, and compare them with model predictions. While for the optical absorption features the models consistently agree with the observations,the NIR indices are much harder to interpret. For early-type spirals the measurements agree roughly with the models, while for star-forming objects they fail to predict the strengths of these indices., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have started a long-term reverberation mapping project using the Wyoming Infrared Observatory 2.3 meter telescope titled "Monitoring AGNs with H\beta\ Asymmetry" (MAHA). The motivations of the project are to explore the geometry and kinematics of the gas responsible for complex H\beta\ emission-line profiles, ideally leading to an understanding of the structures and origins of the broad-line region (BLR). Furthermore, such a project provides the opportunity to search for evidence of close binary supermassive black holes. We describe MAHA and report initial results from our first campaign, from December 2016 to May 2017, highlighting velocity-resolved time lags for four AGNs with asymmetric H\beta\ lines. We find that 3C 120, Ark 120, and Mrk 6 display complex features different from the simple signatures expected for pure outflow, inflow, or a Keplerian disk. While three of the objects have been previously reverberation mapped, including velocity-resolved time lags in the cases of 3C 120 and Mrk 6, we report a time lag and corresponding black hole mass measurement for SBS 1518+593 for the first time. Furthermore, SBS 1518+593, the least asymmetric of the four, does show velocity-resolved time lags characteristic of a Keplerian disk or virialized motion more generally. Also, the velocity-resolved time lags of 3C 120 have significantly changed since previously observed, indicating an evolution of its BLR structure. Type 1 active galactic nuclei display broad emission lines, regarded as arising from photoionized gas moving in the gravitational potential of a supermassive black hole. The origin of this broad-line region gas is unresolved so far, however. Another component is the dusty torus beyond the broad-line region, likely an assembly of discrete clumps that can hide the region from some viewing angles and make them observationally appear as Type 2 objects. Here we report that these clumps moving within the dust sublimation radius, like the molecular cloud G2 discovered in the Galactic center, will be tidally disrupted by the hole, resulting in some gas becoming bound at smaller radii while other gas is ejected and returns to the torus. The clumps fulfill necessary conditions to be photoionized. Specific dynamical components of tidally disrupted clumps include spiral-in gas as inflow, circularized gas, and ejecta as outflow. We calculate various profiles of emission lines from these clouds, and find they generally agree with H$\beta$ profiles of Palomar-Green quasars. We find that asymmetry, shape and shift of the profiles strongly depend on [O III], luminosity, which we interpret as a proxy of dusty torus angles. We have constructed a sample of 386 radio-loud quasars with z < 0.75 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in order to investigate orientation effects on black hole mass estimates. Orientation is estimated using radio core dominance measurements based on FIRST survey maps. Black hole masses are estimated from virial-based scaling relationships using H-beta, and compared to the stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_*), predicted using the Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of [O III] 5007, which tracks mass via the M-sigma_* relation. We find that the FWHM of Hbeta correlates significantly with radio core dominance and biases black hole mass determinations that use it, but that this is not the case for sigma_* based on [O III] 5007. The ratio of black hole masses predicted using orientation-biased and unbiased estimates, which can be determined for radio-quiet as well as radio-loud quasars, is significantly correlated with radio core dominance. Although there is significant scatter, this mass ratio calculated in this way may in fact serve as an orientation estimator. The masses of the black holes powering quasars represent a fundamental parameter of active galaxies. Estimates of quasar black hole masses using single-epoch spectra are quite uncertain, and require quantitative improvement. We recently identified a correction for C IV $\lambda$1549-based scaling relationships used to estimate quasar black hole masses that relies on the continuum-subtracted peak flux ratio of the ultraviolet emission-line blend Si IV + OIV] (the $\lambda$1400 feature) to that of C IV. This parameter correlates with the suite of associated quasar spectral properties collectively known as "Eigenvector 1" (EV1). Here we use a sample of 85 quasars with quasi-simultaneous optical-ultraviolet spectrophotometry to demonstrate how biases in the average EV1 properties can create systematic biases in C IV-based black hole mass scaling relationships. This effect results in nearly an order of magnitude moving from objects with small $<$ peak $\lambda$1400/C IV $>$, which have overestimated black hole masses, to objects with large $<$ peak $\lambda1400$/C IV $>$, which have underestimated values. We show that existing reverberation-mapped samples of quasars with ultraviolet spectra -- used to calibrate C IV-based scaling relationships -- have significant EV1 biases that result in predictions of black hole masses nearly 50\% too high for the average quasar. In order to better understand the nature of post-starburst quasars (PSQs) in the context of galaxy evolution, we compare their properties to those of post-starburst galaxies and quasars from appropriately selected samples possessing similar redshift ($z \sim 0.3$), luminosity ($M_r \sim -$23), and data quality. We consider morphologies, spectral features, and derived physical properties of the stellar populations and central supermassive black hole. PSQs themselves come in two types: the more luminous AGNs with more luminous post-starburst stellar populations hosted by elliptical galaxies, some which are clearly merger products, and the less luminous systems existing within relatively undisturbed spiral galaxies and possessing signs of a more extended period of star formation. Post-starburst galaxies (PSQs) have elliptical and disturbed/post-merger morphologies similar to those of the more luminous PSQs, display similar spectral properties, but also can have younger stellar populations for a given starburst mass. Quasars at similar redshifts and luminosities around the Seyfert/quasar transition possess similar AGN characteristics, in terms of black hole mass and accretion rate, compared with those of PSQs, but do not appear to be hosted by galaxies with significant post-starburst populations. Recent studies of more luminous quasars find hosts consistent with those of our luminous PSQs, suggesting that these PSQs may be in transition between post-starburst galaxies and a more luminous quasar stage when the post-starburst stellar population remains dominant. Studies of radio-loud (RL) broad absorption line (BAL) quasars indicate that popular orientation-based BAL models fail to account for all observations. Are these results extendable to radio-quiet (RQ) BAL quasars? Comparisons of RL and RQ BAL quasars show that many of their properties are quite similar. Here we extend these analyses to the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectral properties, using a sample of 73 RL and 473 RQ BAL quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Each RQ quasar is individually matched to a RL quasar in both redshift (over the range $1.5 < z < 3.5$) and continuum luminosity. We compare several continuum, emission line, and absorption line properties, as well as physical properties derived from these measurements. Most properties in the samples are statistically identical, though we find slight differences in the velocity structure of the BALs that cause apparent differences in CIV emission line properties. Differences in the velocities may indicate an interaction between the radio jets and the absorbing material. We also find that UV FeII emission is marginally stronger in RL BAL quasars. All of these differences are subtle, so in general we conclude that RL and RQ BAL QSOs are not fundamentally different objects, except in their radio properties. They are therefore likely to be driven by similar physical phenomena, suggesting that results from samples of RL BAL quasars can be extended to their RQ counterparts., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. We have used optical Integral Field Spectroscopy in order to map the star formation history of the inner kiloparsec of the Post-Starburst Quasar (PSQ) J0330--0532 and to map its gas and stellar kinematics as well as the gas excitation. PSQs are hypothesized to represent a stage in the evolution of galaxies in which the star formation has been recently quenched due to the feedback of the nuclear activity, as suggested by the presence of the post-starburst population at the nucleus. We have found that the old stellar population (age $\ge$ 2.5 Gyr) dominates the flux at 5100 \AA\ in the inner 0.26 kpc, while both the post-starburst (100 Myr $\le$ age $<$ 2.5 Gyr) and starburst (age $<$ 100 Myr) components dominate the flux in a circumnuclear ring at $\approx$0.5 kpc from the nucleus. With our spatially resolved study we do not have found any post-starburst stellar population in the inner 0.26\,kpc. On the other hand, we do see the signature of AGN feedback in this region, which does not reach the circumnuclear ring where the post-starburst population is observed. We thus do not support the quenching scenario for the J0330-0532. In addition, we have concluded that the strong signature of the post-starburst population in larger aperture spectra (e.g. from Sloan Digital Sky Survey) is partially due to the combination of the young and old age components. Based on the M$_{\rm BH}-\sigma_{\rm star}$ relationship and the stellar kinematics we have estimated a mass for the supermassive black hole of 1.48 $\pm$ 0.66 $\times$10$^7$ M$_\odot$., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1210.1208

We report the results of a new 60 ks Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer S-array (ACIS-S) observation of the reddened, radio-selected, highly polarized `FeLoBAL' quasar FIRST J1556+3517. We investigated a number of models of varied sophistication to fit the 531-photon spectrum. These models ranged from simple power laws to power laws absorbed by hydrogen gas in differing ionization states and degrees of partial covering. Preferred fits indicate that the intrinsic X-ray flux is consistent with that expected for quasars of similarly high luminosity, i.e., an intrinsic, dereddened and unabsorbed optical to X-ray spectral index of -1.7. We cannot tightly constrain the intrinsic X-ray power-law slope, but find indications that it is flat (photon index Gamma = 1.7 or flatter at a >99% confidence for a neutral hydrogen absorber model). Absorption is present, with a column density a few times 10^23 cm^-2, with both partially ionized models and partially covering neutral hydrogen models providing good fits. We present several lines of argument that suggest the fraction of X-ray emissions associated with the radio jet is not large. We combine our Chandra data with observations from the literature to construct the spectral energy distribution of FIRST J1556+3517 from radio to X-ray energies. We make corrections for Doppler beaming for the pole-on radio jet, optical dust reddening, and X-ray absorption, in order to recover a probable intrinsic spectrum. The quasar FIRST J1556+3517 seems to be an intrinsically normal radio-quiet quasar with a reddened optical/UV spectrum, a Doppler-boosted but intrinsically weak radio jet, and an X-ray absorber not dissimilar from that of other broad absorption line quasars., Comment: to be published in MNRAS

We present Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) low-resolution spectra of 16 spectroscopically selected post-starburst quasars (PSQs) at z ~ 0.3. The optical spectra of these broad-lined active galactic nuclei (AGNs) simultaneously show spectral signatures of massive intermediate-aged stellar populations making them good candidates for studying the connections between AGNs and their hosts. The resulting spectra show relatively strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features at 6.2 and 11.3\micron and a very weak silicate feature, indicative of ongoing star formation and low dust obscuration levels for the AGNs. We find that the mid-infrared composite spectrum of PSQs has spectral properties between ULIRGs and QSOs, suggesting that PSQs are hybrid AGN and starburst systems as also seen in their optical spectra. We also find that PSQs in early-type host galaxies tend to have relatively strong AGN activities, while those in spiral hosts have stronger PAH emission, indicating more star formation., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ: May 24, 2013

We present optical spectroscopy of a sample of 38 post-starburst quasars (PSQs) at z ~ 0.3, 29 of which have morphological classifications based on Hubble Space Telescope imaging. These broad-lined active galactic nuclei (AGNs) possess the spectral signatures of massive intermediate-aged stellar populations making them potentially useful for studying connections between nuclear activity and host galaxy evolution. We model the spectra in order to determine the ages and masses of the host stellar populations, and the black hole masses and Eddington fractions of the AGNs. Our model components include an instantaneous starburst, a power-law, and emission lines. We find the PSQs have MBH ~ 10^8 Msun accreting at a few percent of Eddington luminosity and host ~ 10^10.5 Msun stellar populations which are several hundred Myr to a few Gyr old. We investigate relationships among these derived properties, spectral properties, and morphologies. We find that PSQs hosted in spiral galaxies have significantly weaker AGN luminosities, older starburst ages, and narrow emission-line ratios diagnostic of ongoing star-formation when compared to their early-type counterparts. We conclude that the early-type PSQs are likely the result of major mergers and were likely luminous infrared galaxies in the past, while spiral PSQs with more complex star-formation histories are triggered by less dramatic events (e.g., harassment, bars). Post-Starburst Quasars (PSQs) are hypothesized to represent a stage in the evolution of massive galaxies in which the star formation has been recently quenched due to the feedback of the nuclear activity. In this paper our goal is to test this scenario with a resolved stellar population study of the PSQ J0210-0903, as well as of its emitting gas kinematics and excitation. We have used optical Integral Field Spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini GMOS instrument at a velocity resolution of ~120 km/s and spatial resolution of ~0.5 kpc. We find that old stars dominate the luminosity (at 4700 \AA) in the inner 0.3 kpc (radius), while beyond this region (at ~0.8 kpc) the stellar population is dominated by both intermediate age and young ionizing stars. The gas emission-line ratios are typical of Seyfert nuclei in the inner 0.3 kpc, where an outflow is observed. Beyond this region the line ratios are typical of LINERs and may result from the combination of diluted radiation from the nucleus and ionization from young stars. The gas kinematics show a combination of rotation in the plane of the galaxy and outflows, observed with a maximum blueshift of -670 km/s. We have estimated a mass outflow rate in ionized gas in the range 0.3--1.1 M_sun/yr and a kinetic power for the outflow of dE/dt ~ 1.4--5.0 x 10^40 erg/s ~0.03% - 0.1% x L_bol. This outflow rate is two orders of magnitude higher than the nuclear accretion rate of ~8.7 x 10^-3 M_sun/yr, thus being the result of mass loading of the nuclear outflow by circumnuclear galactic gas. Our observations support an evolutionary scenario in which the feeding of gas to the nuclear region has triggered a circumnuclear starburst 100's Myr ago, followed by the triggering of the nuclear activity, producing the observed gas outflow which may have quenched further star formation in the inner 0.3 kpc., Comment: 17 pages, 9 Figures, 2 Tables

The MBH - {\sigma}\ast relation has been studied extensively for local galaxies, but to date there have been scarce few direct measurements of stellar velocity dispersions for systems beyond the local universe. We investigate black hole and host galaxy properties of six "post-starburst quasars" at z \sim 0.3. Spectra of these objects simultaneously display features from the active nucleus including broad emission lines and a host galaxy Balmer absorption series indicative of the post-starburst stellar population. These are the first measurements of {\sigma}\ast in such objects, and we significantly increase the number of directly-measured non-local objects on the MBH - {\sigma}\ast diagram. The "post-starburst quasars" of our sample fall on or above the locally defined MBH - {\sigma}\ast relation, a result that is consistent with previous MBH - {\sigma}\ast studies of samples at z > 0.1. However, they are generally consistent with the MBH-Lbulge relation. We present measurements and statistical properties of the optical and ultraviolet emission lines present in the spectra of 85 bright quasars which have detailed spectral energy distributions. This heterogeneous sample has redshifts up to z=1.5 and is comprised of three subsamples that may be of particular utility: ultraviolet excess Palomar-Green quasars, quasars with far-ultraviolet coverage from FUSE, and radio-loud quasars selected to have similar extended radio luminosity originally selected for orientation studies. Most of the objects have quasi-simultaneous optical-ultraviolet spectra, with significant coverage in the radio-to-X-ray wavebands. The parameters of all strong emission lines are measured by detailed spectral fitting. Many significant correlations previously found among quasar emission-line properties are also present in this sample, e.g., the Baldwin effect, the optical correlations collectively known as eigenvector 1, and others. Finally, we use our measurements plus scaling relationships to estimate black hole masses and Eddington fractions. We show the mass estimates from different emission lines are usually in agreement within a factor of 2, but nearly a third show larger differences. We suggest using multiple mass scaling relationships to estimate black hole masses when possible, and adopting a median of the estimates as the black hole mass for individual objects. We present infrared bolometric luminosity corrections derived from the detailed spectral energy distributions of 62 bright quasars of low- to moderate-redshift (z=0.03-1.4). At 1.5, 2, 3, 7, 12, 15, and 24 microns we provide bolometric corrections of the mathematical forms L_iso=\zeta \lambda L_\lambda and log(L_iso)=A+B log(\lambda L_\lambda). Bolometric corrections for radio-loud and radio-quiet objects are consistent within 95% confidence intervals, so we do not separate them. Bolometric luminosities estimated using these corrections are typically smaller than those derived from some commonly used in the literature. We investigate the possibility of a luminosity dependent bolometric correction and find that, while the data are consistent with such a correction, the dispersion is too large and the luminosity range too small to warrant such a detailed interpretation. Bolometric corrections at 1.5 $\mu$m are appropriate for objects with properties that fall in the range log(L_bol)=45.4-47.3 and bolometric corrections at all other wavelengths are appropriate for objects with properties that fall in the range log(L_bol)=45.1-47.0., Comment: 13 pages, 4 tables, 8 figures, accepted to MNRAS

It was recently shown that there is a significant difference in the radio spectral index distributions of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars and unabsorbed quasars, with an overabundance of BAL quasars with steeper radio spectra. This result suggests that source orientation does play into the presence or absence of BAL features. In this paper we provide more quantitative analysis of this result based on Monte-Carlo simulations. While the relationship between viewing angle and spectral index does indeed contain a lot of scatter, the spectral index distributions are different enough to overcome that intrinsic variation. Utilizing two different models of the relationship between spectral index and viewing angle, the simulations indicate that the difference in spectral index distributions can be explained by allowing BAL quasar viewing angles to extend about 10 degrees farther from the radio jet axis than non-BAL sources, though both can be seen at small angles. These results show that orientation cannot be the only factor determining whether BAL features are present, but it does play a role., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Bolometric corrections are used in quasar studies to quantify total energy output based on a measurement of a monochromatic luminosity. First, we enumerate and discuss the practical difficulties of determining such corrections, then we present bolometric luminosities between 1 \mu m and 8 keV rest frame and corrections derived from the detailed spectral energy distributions of 63 bright quasars of low to moderate redshift (z = 0.03-1.4). Exploring several mathematical fittings, we provide practical bolometric corrections of the forms L_iso=\zeta \lambda L_{\lambda} and log(L_iso)=A+B log(\lambda L_{\lambda}) for \lambda= 1450, 3000, and 5100 \AA, where L_iso is the bolometric luminosity calculated under the assumption of isotropy. The significant scatter in the 5100 \AA\ bolometric correction can be reduced by adding a first order correction using the optical slope, \alpha_\lambda,opt. We recommend an adjustment to the bolometric correction to account for viewing angle and the anisotropic emission expected from accretion discs. For optical/UV monochromatic luminosities, radio-loud and radio-quiet bolometric corrections are consistent within 95% confidence intervals so we do not make separate radio-loud and radio-quiet corrections. In addition, we provide several bolometric corrections to the 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity, which are shown to have very large scatter. New multi-frequency radio observations of a large sample of radio-selected BAL quasars, along with a very well matched sample of normal quasars, are presented. The observations were made one immediately after the other at 4.9 and 8.4 GHz with the goal of measuring the radio spectral index of each source. We have identified, for the first time, a significant difference in the spectral index distributions of BAL versus non-BAL quasars, with BAL sources showing an overabundance of steep-spectrum sources. This is the first direct observation suggesting that BAL quasars are more likely to be seen farther from the radio jet axis, although a range of orientations is needed to explain the width of the distribution. Utilizing a few different relationships between spectral index and viewing angle, we have also performed Monte-Carlo simulations to quantify the viewing angle to these sources. We find that the difference in the distributions of spectral index can be explained by allowing the BAL sources to have viewing angles extending about 10 degrees farther from the jet axis than non-BAL quasars., Comment: Proceedings from the conference "AGN Winds in Charleston", October 2011

We have built a sample of 74 radio-selected broad absorption line quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 (SDSS DR5) and Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters (FIRST), along with a well matched sample of 74 unabsorbed "normal" quasars. The sources have been observed with the NRAO Very Large Array/Expanded Very Large Array at 8.4 GHz (3.5 cm) and 4.9 GHz (6 cm). All sources have additional archival 1.4 GHz (21 cm) data. Here we present the measured radio fluxes, spectral indices, and our initial findings. The percentage of BAL quasars with extended structure (on the order of 10%) in our sample is similar to previous studies at similar resolutions, suggesting that BAL quasars are indeed generally compact, at least at arsecond resolutions. The majority of sources do not appear to be significantly variable at 1.4 GHz, but we find two previously unidentified BAL quasars that may fit into the "polar" BAL category. We also identify a significant favoring of steeper radio spectral index for BAL compared to non-BAL quasars. This difference is apparent for several different measures of the spectral index, and persists even when restricting the samples to only include compact objects. Because radio spectral index is a statistical indicator of viewing angle for large samples, these results suggest that BAL quasars do have a range of orientations but are more often observed farther from the jet axis compared to normal quasars., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present spectropolarimetry of 19 confirmed and 4 possible bright, southern broad absorption line (BAL) quasars from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT). A wide range of redshifts is covered in the sample (from 0.9 to 3.4), and both low- and hi-ionization quasars are represented, as well as radio-loud and radio-quiet BALQSOs. We continue to confirm previously established spectropolarimetric properties of BALQSOs, including the generally rising continuum polarization with shorter wavelengths and comparatively large fraction with high broad-band polarization (6 of 19 with polarizations >2%). Emission lines are polarized less than or similar to the continuum, except in a few unusual cases, and absorption troughs tend to have higher polarizations. A search for correlations between polarization properties has been done, identifying 2 significant or marginally significant correlations. These are an increase in continuum polarization with decreasing optical luminosity (increasing absolute B magnitude) and decreasing \ion{C}{4} emission-line polarization with increased continuum polarization., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

We report sensitive Chandra X-ray non-detections of two unusual, luminous Iron Low-Ionization Broad Absorption Line Quasars (FeLoBALs). The observations do detect a non-BAL, wide-binary companion quasar to one of the FeLoBAL quasars. We combine X-ray-derived column density lower limits (assuming solar metallicity) with column densities measured from ultraviolet spectra and CLOUDY photoionization simulations to explore whether constant density slabs at broad line region densities can match the physical parameters of these two BAL outflows, and find that they cannot. In the "overlapping-trough" object SDSS J0300+0048, we measure the column density of the X-ray absorbing gas to be N_H >= 1.8 x 1024 cm-2. From the presence of Fe II UV78 absorption but lack of Fe II UV195/UV196 absorption, we infer the density in that part of the absorbing region to be n_e ~ 106 cm-3. We do find that a slab of gas at that density might be able to explain this object's absorption. In the Fe III-dominant object SDSS J2215-0045, the X-ray absorbing column density of N_H >= 3.4 x 1024 cm-2 is consistent with the Fe III-derived N_H >= 2 x 1022 cm-2 provided the ionization parameter is log U > 1.0 for both the n_e = 1011 cm-3 and n_e = 1012 cm-3 scenarios considered (such densities are required to produce Fe III absorption without Fe II absorption). However, the velocity width of the absorption rules out its being concentrated in a single slab at these densities. Instead, this object's spectrum can be explained by a low density, high ionization and high temperature disk wind that encounters and ablates higher density, lower ionization Fe III-emitting clumps., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Bolometric corrections based on the optical-to-ultraviolet continuum spectrum of quasars are widely used to quantify their radiative output, although such estimates are affected by a myriad of uncertainties, such as the generally unknown line-of-sight angle to the central engine. In order to shed light on these issues, we investigate the state-of-the-art models of Hubeny et al. that describe the continuum spectrum of thin accretion discs and include relativistic effects. We explore the bolometric corrections as a function of mass accretion rates, black hole masses and viewing angles, restricted to the parameter space expected for type-1 quasars. We find that a nonlinear relationship log L_bol=A + B log(lambda L_lambda) with B<=0.9 is favoured by the models and becomes tighter as the wavelength decreases. We calculate from the model the bolometric corrections corresponding to the wavelengths lambda = 1450A, 3000A and 5100A. In particular, for lambda=3000A we find A=9.24 +- 0.77 and B=0.81 +- 0.02. We demonstrate that the often-made assumption that quasars emit isotropically may lead to severe systematic errors in the determination of L_bol, when using the method of integrating the "big blue bump" spectrum. For a typical viewing angle of ~30 degrees to the quasar central engine, we obtain that the value of L_bol resulting from the isotropy assumption has a systematic error of ~30% high compared to the value of L_bol which incorporates the anisotropic emission of the accretion disc. Outflows from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) seem to be common and are thought to be important from a variety of perspectives: as an agent of chemical enhancement of the interstellar and intergalactic media, as an agent of angular momentum removal from the accreting central engine, and as an agent limiting star formation in starbursting systems by blowing out gas and dust from the host galaxy. To understand these processes, we must determine what fraction of AGNs feature outflows and understand what forms they take. We examine recent surveys of quasar absorption lines, reviewing the best means to determine if systems are intrinsic and result from outflowing material, and the limitations of approaches taken to date. The surveys reveal that, while the fraction of specific forms of outflows depends on AGN properties, the overall fraction displaying outflows is fairly constant, approximately 60%, over many orders of magnitude in luminosity. We emphasize some issues concerning classification of outflows driven by data type rather than necessarily the physical nature of outflows, and illustrate how understanding outflows probably requires more a comprehensive approach than has usually been taken in the past., Comment: uses emulateapj, 7 pages including 1 color figure, 1 table, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We have investigated a sample of 5088 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Second Data Release in order to determine how the frequency and properties of broad absorptions lines (BALs) depend on black hole mass, bolometric luminosity, Eddington fraction (L/L_Edd), and spectral slope. We focus only on high-ionization BALs and find a number of significant results. While quasars accreting near the Eddington limit are more likely to show BALs than lower $L/L_{Edd}$ systems, BALs are present in quasars accreting at only a few percent Eddington. We find a stronger effect with bolometric luminosity, such that the most luminous quasars are more likely to show BALs. There is an additional effect, previously known, that BAL quasars are redder on average than unabsorbed quasars. The strongest effects involving the quasar physical properties and BAL properties are related to terminal outflow velocity. Maximum observed outflow velocities increase with both the bolometric luminosity and the blueness of the spectral slope, suggesting that the ultraviolet luminosity to a great extent determines the acceleration.
