Search

Exploring the possibility that fundamental constants of Nature might vary temporally or spatially constitutes one of the key science drivers for the European Southern Observatory's ESPRESSO spectrograph on the VLT and for the HIRES spectrograph on the ELT. High-resolution spectra of quasar absorption systems permit accurate measurements of fundamental constants out to high redshifts. The quality of new data demands completely objective and reproducible methods. We have developed a new fully automated Artificial Intelligence-based method capable of deriving optimal models of even the most complex absorption systems known. The AI structure is built around VPFIT, a well-developed and extensively-tested non-linear least-squares code. The new method forms a sophisticated parallelised system, eliminating human decision-making and hence bias. Here we describe the workings of such a system and apply it to synthetic spectra, in doing so establishing methods of importance for future analyses of VLT and ELT data. The results show that modelling line broadening for high-redshift absorption components should include both thermal and turbulent components. Failing to do so means it is easy to derive the wrong model and hence incorrect parameter estimates. We also argue that model non-uniqueness can be significant, such that it is not feasible to expect to derive an unambiguous estimate of the fine structure constant alpha from one or a small number of measurements. No matter how optimal the modelling method, it is a fundamental requirement to use a large sample of measurements to meaningfully constrain temporal or spatial alpha variation., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 1 April 2021

The gravitational potential phi = GM/Rc^2 at the surface of the white dwarf G191-B2B is 10,000 times stronger than that at the Earth's surface. Numerous photospheric absorption features are detected, making this a suitable environment to test theories in which the fundamental constants depend on gravity. We have measured the fine structure constant, alpha, at the white dwarf surface, used a newly calibrated Hubble Space Telescope STIS spectrum of G191-B2B, two new independent sets of laboratory Fe V wavelengths, and new atomic calculations of the sensitivity parameters that quantify Fe V wavelength dependency on alpha. The two results obtained are: dalpha/alpha = 6.36 +/- [0.33(stat) + 1.94(sys)] X 10^{-5} and dalpha/alpha = 4.21 +/- [0.47(stat) + 2.35(sys)] X 10^{-5}. The measurements hint that the fine structure constant increases slightly in the presence of strong gravitational fields. A comprehensive search for systematic errors is summarised, including possible effects from line misidentifications, line blending, stratification of the white dwarf atmosphere, the quadratic Zeeman effect and electric field effects, photospheric velocity flows, long-range wavelength distortions in the HST spectrum, and variations in the relative Fe isotopic abundances. For around 100 years, hydrogen spectral modelling has been based on Voigt profile fitting. The semi-classical Voigt profile is based on a 2-level atom approximation. Whilst the Voigt profile is excellent for many circumstances, the accuracy is insufficient for very high column density damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption systems. We have adapted the quantum-mechanical Kramers-Heisenberg model to include thermal broadening, producing a new profile, the KHT profile. Interactions involving multiple discrete atomic levels and continuum terms, not accounted for in the Voigt model, generate asymmetries in the Lyman line wings. If not modelled, this can lead to significant systematics in parameter estimation when modelling real data. There are important ramifications in particular for measurements of the primordial deuterium abundance. However, the KHT model is complicated. We therefore present a simplified formulation based on Taylor series expansions and look-up tables, quantifying the impact of the approximations made. White dwarf atmospheres are subjected to gravitational potentials around $10^5$ times larger than occur on Earth. They provide a unique environment in which to search for any possible variation in fundamental physics in the presence of strong gravitational fields. However, a sufficiently strong magnetic field will alter absorption line profiles and introduce additional uncertainties in measurements of the fine structure constant. Estimating the magnetic field strength is thus essential in this context. Here we model the absorption profiles of a large number of atomic transitions in the white dwarf photosphere, including first-order Zeeman effects in the line profiles, varying the magnetic field as a free parameter. We apply the method to a high signal-to-noise, high-resolution, far-ultraviolet HST/STIS spectrum of the white dwarf G191-B2B. The method yields a sensitive upper limit on its magnetic field of $B < 2300$ Gauss at the $3\sigma$ level. Using this upper limit we find that the potential impact of quadratic Zeeman shifts on measurements of the fine structure constant in G191-B2B is 4 orders of magnitude below laboratory wavelength uncertainties., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The primordial deuterium abundance probes fundamental physics during the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and can be used to infer cosmological parameters. Observationally, the abundance can be measured using absorbing clouds along the lines of sight to distant quasars. Observations of the quasar PKS1937--101 contain two absorbers for which the deuterium abundance has previously been determined. Here we focus on the higher redshift one at $z_{abs} = 3.572$. We present new observations with significantly increased signal-to-noise ratio which enable a far more precise and robust measurement of the deuterium to hydrogen column density ratio, resulting in D/H = $2.62\pm0.05\times10^{-5}$. This particular measurement is of interest because it is among the most precise assessments to date and it has been derived from the second lowest column-density absorber [N(HI) $=17.9\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$] that has so-far been utilised for deuterium abundance measurements. The majority of existing high-precision measurements were obtained from considerably higher column density systems [i.e. N(HI) $>19.4\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$]. At low densities the standard ionisation history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) predicts a decreasing temperature of the IGM with decreasing density once hydrogen (and helium) reionisation is complete. Heating the high-redshift, low-density IGM above the temperature expected from photo-heating is difficult, and previous claims of high/rising temperatures in low density regions of the Universe based on the probability density function (PDF) of the opacity in Lyman-$\alpha$ forest data at $2

In this work, we investigate the abundance and distribution of metals in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $\langle z \rangle \simeq 2.8$ through the analysis of an ultra-high signal-to-noise ratio UVES spectrum of the quasar HE0940-1050. In the CIV forest, our deep spectrum is sensitive at $3\,\sigma$ to lines with column density down to $\log N_{\rm CIV} \simeq 11.4$ and in 60 per cent of the considered redshift range down to $\simeq11.1$. In our sample, all HI lines with $\log N_{\rm HI} \ge 14.8$ show an associated CIV absorption. In the range $14.0 \le \log N_{\rm HI} <14.8$, 43 per cent of HI lines has an associated CIV absorption. At $\log N_{\rm HI} < 14.0$, the detection rates drop to $<10$ per cent, possibly due to our sensitivity limits and not to an actual variation of the gas abundance properties. In the range $\log N_{\rm HI} \ge 14$, we observe a fraction of HI lines with detected CIV a factor of 2 larger than the fraction of HI lines lying in the circum-galactic medium (CGM) of relatively bright Lyman-break galaxies hosted by dark matter haloes with $\langle M\rangle \sim10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$. The comparison of our results with the output of a grid of photoionization models and of two cosmological simulations implies that the volume filling factor of the IGM gas enriched to a metallicity $\log Z/Z_{\odot} \ge -3$ should be of the order of $\sim 10-13$ percent. In conclusion, our results favour a scenario in which metals are found also outside the CGM of bright star-forming galaxies, possibly due to pollution by lower mass objects and/or to an early enrichment by the first sources., Comment: 23 pages, 28 figures. From the Voigt profile fitting analysis of 183 intervening CIV systems at 1.7 < z < 3.3 in 23 high-quality UVES/VLT and HIRES/Keck QSO spectra, we find that a majority of CIV systems (~75%) display a well-characterised scaling relation between integrated column densities of HI and CIV with a negligible redshift evolution, when column densities of all the HI and CIV components are integrated within a given (-150, +150) km/sec range centred at the CIV flux minimum. The integrated CIV column density N(CIV, sys) increases with N(HI, sys) at log N(HI, sys) = 14.0--15.5 and log N(CIV, sys) = 11.8--14.0, then becomes almost independent of N(HI, sys) at log N(HI, sys) > 16, with a large scatter: at log N(HI, sys) = 14--22, log N(CIV, sys) = C1 / (log(NHI, sys) + C2) + C3, with C1 = -1.90+0.55, C2 = -14.11+0.19 and C3 = 14.76+0.17, respectively. The steep (flat) part is dominated by SiIV-free (SiIV-enriched) CIV systems. Extrapolating the N(HI, sys)-N(CIV, sys) relation implies that most absorbers with log N(HI) < 14 are virtually CIV-free. The N(HI, sys)-N(CIV, sys) relation does not hold for individual components, clumps or the integration velocity range less than +-100 km/sec. It is expected if the line-of-sight extent of CIV is smaller than HI and N(CIV, sys) decreases more rapidly than N(HI, sys) at the larger impact parameter, regardless of the location of the HI+CIV gas in the IGM filaments or in the intervening galactic halos., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS, 26 pages, 20 figures, 4 tables. Laming (1990) predicted that the narrow Balmer line core of the ~3000 km/s shock in the SN 1006 remnant would be significantly polarized due to electron and proton impact polarization. Here, based on deep spectrally resolved polarimetry obtained with the European Southern Observatory (ESO)'s Very Large Telescope (VLT), we report the discovery of polarized line emission of polarization degree approx 1.3 percent with position angle orthogonal to the SNR filament. Correcting for an unpolarized broad line component, the implied narrow line polarization is approx 2.0 percent, close to the predictions of Laming (1990). The predicted polarization is primarily sensitive to shock velocity and post-shock temperature equilibration. By measuring polarization for the SN1006 remnant, we validate and enable a new diagnostic that has important applications in a wide variety of astrophysical situations, such as shocks, intense radiation fields, high energy particle streams and conductive interfaces., Comment: ApJ Letters, accepted

The physical relationship between low-excitation gas filaments at ~10^4 K, seen in optical line emission, and diffuse X-ray emitting coronal gas at ~10^7 K in the centers of many galaxy clusters is not understood. It is unclear whether the ~10^4 K filaments have cooled and condensed from the ambient hot (~10^7 K) medium or have some other origin such as the infall of cold gas in a merger, or the disturbance of an internal cool reservoir of gas by nuclear activity. Observations of gas at intermediate temperatures (~10^5-10^6 K) can potentially reveal whether the central massive galaxies are gaining cool gas through condensation or losing it through conductive evaporation and hence identify plausible scenarios for transport processes in galaxy cluster gas. Here we present spectroscopic detection of ~10^5 K gas spatially associated with the H-alpha filaments in a central cluster galaxy, M87 in the Virgo Cluster. The measured emission-line fluxes from triply ionized carbon (CIV 1549 A) and singly ionized helium (HeII 1640 A) are consistent with a model in which thermal conduction determines the interaction between hot and cold phases., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures; to appear in ApJL

By comparing the widths of absorption lines from OI, SiII and FeII in the redshift z=2.076 single-component damped Lyman alpha absorption system in the spectrum of Q2206-199 we establish that these absorption lines arise in Warm Neutral Medium gas at ~12000 +/- 3000K. This is consistent with thermal equilibrium model estimates of ~ 8000K for the Warm Neutral Medium in galaxies, but not with the presence of a significant cold component. It is also consistent with, but not required by, the absence of CII* fine structure absorption in this system. [ABRIDGED] We examine the velocity structure in the gas associated with \ion{H}{1} in the damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption system at redshift $z=1.7764$ towards the QSO $1331+170$ using 21cm data, optical and STIS spectra. We find at least two, and possibly three, components showing \ion{C}{1} lines. One of these has Doppler parameter $b=0.55${\kms}, corresponding to a kinetic temperature of 220K if the broadening is thermal. We re-examine the H$_2$ analysis undertaken by \citet{Cui05} using the neutral carbon velocity structure, and find a model which is, consistent with a mixture of collisional and background radiation excitation of the observed H$_2$ rotational levels. For singly ionized heavy elements we find eight components covering a velocity range of $\sim 110$ {\kms}. The \ion{H}{1} structure is expected to follow some combination of the singly ionized and neutral gas, but the 21cm absorption profile is considerably different. This may be because of the different extent and brightness distributions of the radio and optical background sources, and so the spin temperature derived by comparing the Ly$\alpha$ and 21cm line strengths has little physical meaning. The neutral and singly ionized heavy element line profiles also show significant differences, and so the dominant components in each appear to be physically distinct. Attempts to use the range of atomic masses to separate thermal and turbulent components of their Doppler widths were not generally successful. The velocity structure in all ionization stages up to $+3$, apart from the neutral heavy elements, is sufficiently complex that it is difficult to separate out the corresponding velocity components for different ionization levels and determine their column densities., Comment: 49 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables. We previously reported Keck telescope observations suggesting a smaller value of the fine structure constant, alpha, at high redshift. New Very Large Telescope (VLT) data, probing a different direction in the universe, shows an inverse evolution; alpha increases at high redshift. Although the pattern could be due to as yet undetected systematic effects, with the systematics as presently understood the combined dataset fits a spatial dipole, significant at the 4.2-sigma level, in the direction right ascension 17.5 +/- 0.9 hours, declination -58 +/- 9 degrees. The independent VLT and Keck samples give consistent dipole directions and amplitudes, as do high and low redshift samples. We report two detections of deuterated molecular hydrogen (HD) in QSO absorption-line systems at $z > 2$. Toward J2123-0500, we find $N$(HD) $= 13.84 \pm 0.2$ for a sub-DLA with metallicity $\simeq 0.5Z_{\odot}$ and $N$(H$_2$) = $17.64 \pm 0.15$ at $z = 2.0594$. Toward FJ0812+32, we find $N$(HD) $= 15.38 \pm 0.3$ for a solar-metallicity DLA with $N$(H$_2$) = $19.88 \pm 0.2$ at $z = 2.6265$. These systems have ratios of HD to H$_2$ above that observed in dense clouds within the Milky Way disk and apparently consistent with a simple conversion from the cosmological ratio of D/H. These ratios are not readily explained by any available model of HD chemistry and there are no obvious trends with metallicity or molecular content. Taken together, these two systems and the two published $z > 2$ HD-bearing DLAs indicate that HD is either less effectively dissociated or more efficiently produced in high-redshift interstellar gas, even at low molecular fraction and/or solar metallicity. It is puzzling that such diverse systems should show such consistent HD/H$_2$ ratios. Without clear knowledge of all the aspects of HD chemistry that may help determine the ratio HD/H$_2$, we conclude that these systems are potentially more revealing of gas chemistry than of D/H itself and that it is premature to use such systems to constrain D/H at high-redshift., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 5 pages emulate ApJ text

We present an analysis of the Ly-a forest toward 3C 273 from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph at ~7 km/s resolution, along with re-processed data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. The high UV flux of 3C 273 allows us to probe the weak, low z absorbers. The main sample consists of 21 HI absorbers that we could discriminate to a sensitivity of log NHI~ 12.5. The redshift density for absorbers with 13.1= 12.5, it is consistent with numerical model predictions. The Doppler parameter distribution is consistent with other low z samples. We find no evidence for a break in the column density power-law distribution to log NHI=12.3. A broad Ly-a absorber (BLA) is within Delta v =< 50 km/s and 1.3 local frame Mpc of two ~0.5L* galaxies, with an OVI absorber ~700 km/s away, similarly close to three galaxies and indicating overdense environments. We detect clustering on the Delta v<1000 km/s scale at 3.4 sigma significance for log NHI >= 12.6, consistent with the level predicted from hydrodynamical simulations, and indication for a Ly-a forest void at 0.09

CODEX and ESPRESSO are concepts for ultra-stable, high-resolution spectrographs at the E-ELT and VLT, respectively. Both instruments are well motivated by distinct sets of science drivers. However, ESPRESSO will also be a stepping stone towards CODEX both in a scientific as well as in a technical sense. We compare the improved measurement of the Lya forest flux probability distribution at 1.7

We have performed an extensive Voigt profile analysis of the neutral hydrogen (HI) and metal absorption present in a sample of 18 high resolution, high signal-to-noise QSO spectra observed with VLT/UVES. We use this analysis to separate the metal contribution from the HI absorption and present an improved measurement of the flux probability distribution function (PDF) due to HI absorption alone at = 2.07, 2.52, and 2.94. The flux PDF is sensitive to the continuum fit in the normalised flux range 0.8 < F < 1.0 and to metal absorption at 0.2 < F < 0.8. Our new measurements of the flux PDF due to HI absorption alone are systematically lower at 0.2 < F < 0.8 by up to 30% compared to the widely used measurement of McDonald et al. (2000), based on a significantly smaller sample of Keck/HIRES data. This discrepancy is probably due to a combination of our improved removal of the metal absorption and cosmic variance, since variations in the flux PDF between different lines-of-sight are large. The HI effective optical depth at 1.7 < z < 4 is best fit with a single power law, (0.0023 +-0.0007) (1+z)^(3.65 +- 0.21), in good agreement with previous measurements from comparable data. We present STIS 7km/s resolution data of the Ly-a forest toward PKS0405-123 (z=0.574). We make two samples. The strong sample (60 systems) has column density logNHI>13.3 over 0.00213.1 at 0.02014.0. For 13.113.3, consistent with a numerical model. There is a void in the strong sample at 0.0320 13.5-14.0. The strength is similar to that of the galaxy-galaxy correlation for our sample, implying that such Ly-a systems have mass log M/Msun= 11.3+1.0-0.6. Including lower column density systems in the sample shows correlations only out to Delta v <125km/s, as would be expected for smaller density perturbations. Galaxy counts and local HI column density appear correlated, peaking at ~5000km/s. We also give column densities for Galactic species. The flux power spectra of the Lyman-alpha forest from a sample of 27 QSOs taken with the high resolution echelle spectrograph UVES on VLT are presented. We find a similar fluctuation amplitude at the peak of the ``3D'' flux power spectrum at k ~ 0.03 (km/sec)^(-1) as the study by Croft et al. (2002), in the same redshift range. The amplitude of the flux power spectrum increases with decreasing redshift if corrected for the increase in the mean flux level as expected if the evolution of the flux power spectrum is sensitive to the gravitational growth of matter density fluctuations. This is in agreement with the findings of McDonald et al. (2000) at larger redshift. The logarithmic slope of the "3D" flux power spectrum, P_F(k), at large scales k < 0.03 (km/sec)^(-1), is 1.4 +- 0.3, i.e. 0.3 shallower than that found by Croft et al. (2002) but consistent within the errors., Comment: 18 pages, 9 PS figures, 6 tables. We demonstrate that the lyman alpha forest flux power spectrum of ``randomised'' QSO absorption spectra is comparable in shape and amplitude to the flux power spectrum of the original observed spectra. In the randomised spectra a random shift in wavelength has been added to the observed absorption lines as identified and fitted with VPFIT. At 0.03 s/km 15 dominate at large scales, k< 0.03 s/km. We further show that a fraction of up to 20 % of the mean flux decrement is contributed by strong absorbers. Analysis of the flux power spectrum which use numerical simulations with too few strong absorption systems calibrated with the observed mean flux are likely to underestimate the inferred rms fluctuation amplitude and the slope of the initial dark matter matter power spectrum. In a combined analysis with other data which constrains the dark matter power spectrum on larger scales this can result in a spurious detection of a running spectral index., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Recent numerical simulations have lead to a paradigm shift in our understanding of the intergalactic medium, and the loss of a physical justification for Voigt profile fitting of the Lyman-alpha forest. Many individual lines seen in simulated spectra have significant departures from the Voigt profile, yet could be well fitted by a blend of two or more such lines. We discuss the expected effect on the line profiles due to ongoing gravitational structure formation and Hubble expansion. We develop a method to detect departures from Voigt profiles of the absorption lines in a statistical way and apply this method to simulated Lyman-alpha forest spectra, confirming that the profiles seen do statistically differ from Voigt profiles., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL. 10 pages, 3 figures

The spatial distribution of Ly-alpha forest absorption systems towards ten QSOs has been analysed to search for large-scale structure over the redshift range 2.2 < z < 3.4. The QSOs form a closely spaced group on the sky and are concentrated within a 1 deg^2 field. We have employed a technique based on the first and second moments of the transmission probability density function which is capable of identifying and assessing the significance of regions of over- or underdense Ly-alpha absorption. We find evidence for large-scale structure in the distribution of Ly-alpha forest absorption at the > 99 per cent confidence level. In individual spectra we find overdense Ly-alpha absorption on scales of up to 1200 km s^-1. There is also strong evidence for correlated absorption across line of sight pairs separated by < 3 h^-1 proper Mpc (q_0 = 0.5). (abridged) We present observations of the high-redshift QSO GB1759+7539 (z=3.05) obtained with HIRES on the Keck 10m telescope. The spectrum has a resolution of FWHM = 7 km/s, and a typical signal-to-noise ratio per 2 km/s pixel of ~25 in the Ly-alpha forest region, and ~60 longward of the Ly-alpha emission. The observed Ly-alpha forest systems have a mean redshift of z=2.7. There is marginal evidence of clustering along the line of sight over the velocity range 100 < v < 250 km/s. The 1-point and 2-point joint probability distributions of the transmitted flux for the Ly-alpha forest were calculated, and shown to be very insensitive to the heavy element contamination. We could find no evidence of Voigt profile departures due to infalling gas, as observed in the simulated forest spectra. Twelve heavy-element absorption systems were identified, including damped Lyman-alpha systems at z=2.62 and 2.91. The C, N, O, Al, Si, P, S, Mg, Fe, and Ni absorption features of these systems were studied, and the elemental abundances calculated for the weak unsaturated lines. The systems have metallicities of Z(2.62) ~1/20 Z(solar) and Z(2.91) \~1/45 Z(solar). Both systems appear to have a low dust content. They show an over-abundance of alpha-elements relative to Fe-peak elements, and an under-abundance of odd atomic number elements relative to even. Nitrogen was observed, and found to be under-abundant relative to oxygen, in line with the time delay model of primary nitrogen production. C II* was also seen, allowing us to determine an upper limit to the cosmic microwave background temperature at z=2.62 of T(CMB)<12.9K., Comment: Added reference, and new S & N abundance determinations for z=2.91 system

We report on high resolution observations (R=35000) of the Hubble Deep Field South QSO J2233-606 obtained with the University College London Echelle Spectrograph at the AAT. We present spectral data and an associated absorption line list for the wavelength region 3530 < lambda < 4390A. We present a new technique for detecting structure on Mpc scales in the Lyman-alpha forest. The technique is easy to apply in practice since it does not involve absorption line fitting but is rather based on the statistics of the transmitted flux. It identifies and assesses the statistical significance of regions of over- or underdense Lyman-alpha absorption and is fairly insensitive to the quality of the data. Using extensive simulations we demonstrate that the new method is significantly more sensitive to the detection of large-scale structure in the Lyman-alpha forest than a traditional two-point correlation function analysis of fitted absorption lines., Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 12 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Multidimensional cosmologies allow for variations of fundamental physical constants over the course of cosmological evolution, and different versions of the theories predict different time dependences. In particular, such variations could manifest themselves as changes of the proton-to-electron mass ratio \mu=m_p/m_e over the period of ~ 10^{10} years since the moment of formation of high-redshift QSO spectra. Here we analyze a new, high-resolution spectrum of the z=2.81080 molecular hydrogen absorption system toward the quasar PKS 0528-250 to derive a new observational constraint to the time-averaged variation rate of the proton-to-electron mass ratio. We find |\dot{\mu} / \mu| < 1.5 \times 10^{-14}/year, which is much tighter than previously measured limits., Comment: 9 pages, 2 tables, 3 figures, LaTeX (aas2pp4.sty and epsf.sty included). Recent HST/GHRS observations of the z = 0.7010 absorber toward the QSO 1718+4807 (selected because of apparently ideal characteristics for measuring D/H) yield a D/H significantly higher D/H than some recent high-redshift measurements. Our analysis indicates D/H}= 1.8 - 2.5 x 10^{-4}. Of the light elements, the primordial abundance of deuterium, (D/H)_p, provides the most sensitive diagnostic for the cosmological mass density parameter Omega_B. Recent high redshift (D/H) measurements are highly discrepant, although this may reflect observational uncertainties. The larger (D/H) values, which imply a low Omega_B and require the Universe to be dominated by non-baryonic matter (dynamical studies indicate a higher total density parameter), cause problems for galactic chemical evolution models since they have difficulty in reproducing the large decline down to the lower present-day (D/H). Conversely, low (D/H) values imply an Omega_B greater than derived from ^7Li and ^4He abundance measurements, and may require a deuterium abundance evolution that is too low to easily explain. Here we report the first measurement at intermediate redshift, where the observational difficulties are smaller, of a gas cloud with ideal characteristics for this experiment. Our analysis of the z = 0.7010 absorber toward 1718+4807 indicates (D/H) = 2.0 +/- 0.5 x 10^{-4} which is in the high range. This and other independent observations suggests there may be a cosmological inhomogeneity in (D/H)_p of at least a factor of ten., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

We use new observations of very weak CIV absorption lines associated with high-redshift Lyman-alpha absorption systems to measure the high-redshift Lyman-alpha line two-point correlation function (TPCF). These very weak CIV absorption lines trace small-scale velocity structure that cannot be resolved by Lyman-alpha absorption lines. We find that (1) high-redshift Lyman-alpha absorption systems with N(HI) > 3.10^14 cm^{-2} are strongly clustered in redshift, (2) previous measurements of the Lyman-alpha line TPCF underestimated the actual clustering of the absorbers due to unresolved blending of overlapping velocity components, (3) the present observations are consistent with the hypothesis that clustering of Lyman-alpha absorption systems extends to lower column densities, but maybe with smaller amplitude in the correlation function, and (4) the observed clustering is broadly compatible with that expected for galaxies at z \sim 2-3. We interpret these results as suggesting that many or most Lyman-alpha absorbers may arise in galaxies even at high redshifts, and, therefore, that the Lyman-alpha forest probes processes of galaxy formation and evolution for redshifts \lesssim 5., Comment: 12 pages, includes 4 figures, uses AASTEX style file aaspp4.tex. We present results from 12 km/s resolution echelle spectroscopy of the bright $z=4.694$ QSO BR1202-0725. A preliminary analysis shows that high metallicity narrow line absorption clouds are present up to the redshift of the quasar. A damped Ly$\alpha$ system with an HI column density of $3.1 \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ at $z=4.383$ has an [O/H] ratio that is about 0.01 solar, while another absorption system with an HI column density of $5.0 \times 10^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ at $z=4.672$, may have an O/H ratio that is twice solar. An upper limit, or the possible detection of deuterium in this absorption cloud gives a D/H ratio of about 1.5\,10$^{-4}$.
