Discovering alternative ways to drive domain wall (DW) dynamics is crucial for advancing spintronic applications. Here we demonstrate via atomistic spin dynamics simulations that optical torques can efficiently drive 90^{\circ} DWs in the Mn2Au antiferromagnet but their spatial symmetry forbids the motion of 180^{\circ} walls. In the steady-state regime, the kinematics display special relativity signatures accessed for low laser intensities. At velocities higher than the magnonic limit, the DW enters a proliferation regime in which part of its relativistic energy is invested into the nucleation of novel magnetic textures. Our investigation contributes towards the fundamental understanding of opto-magnetic effects, supporting the development of next generation, all-optically controlled antiferromagnetic spintronics.

An antiferromagnet emits spin currents when time-reversal symmetry is broken. This is typically achieved by applying an external magnetic field below and above the spin-flop transition or by optical pumping. In this work we apply optical pump-THz emission spectroscopy to study picosecond spin pumping from metallic FeRh as a function of temperature. Intriguingly we find that in the low-temperature antiferromagnetic phase the laser pulse induces a large and coherent spin pumping, while not crossing into the ferromagnetic phase. With temperature and magnetic field dependent measurements combined with atomistic spin dynamics simulations we show that the antiferromagnetic spin-lattice is destabilised by the combined action of optical pumping and picosecond spin-biasing by the conduction electron population, which results in spin accumulation. We propose that the amplitude of the effect is inherent to the nature of FeRh, particularly the Rh atoms and their high spin susceptibility. We believe that the principles shown here could be used to produce more effective spin current emitters. Our results also corroborate the work of others showing that the magnetic phase transition begins on a very fast picosecond timescale, but this timescale is often hidden by measurements which are confounded by the slower domain dynamics.

Accurate knowledge of the heating performance of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) under AC fields is critical for the development of hyperthermia-mediated applications. Usually reported in terms of the specific loss power (SLP) obtained from the temperature variation ($\Delta{T}$) vs. time (t) curve, such estimate is subjected to a huge uncertainty. Thus, very different SLP values are reported for the same particles when measured on different equipment/laboratories. This lack of control clearly hampers the further development of MNP-mediated heat-triggered technologies. Here we report a device-independent approach to calculate the SLP value of a suspension of MNPs: the SLP is obtained from the analysis of the peak at the field on/off switch of the $\Delta{T}(t)$ curve. The measurement procedure, which itself constitutes a change of paradigm within the field, is based on fundamental physics considerations: specifically to guarantee the applicability of Newton's law of cooling, as i) it corresponds to the ideal scenario in which the temperature profiles of the system during heating and cooling are the same; and ii) it diminishes the role of coexistence of various heat dissipation channels. Such an approach is supported by theoretical and computational calculations to increase the reliability and reproducibility of SLP determination. This is experimentally confirmed, demonstrating a reduction in SLP variation across 3 different devices located in 3 different laboratories. Furthermore, the application of this peak analysis method (PAM) to a rapid succession of field on/off switches that result in a zigzag-like $\Delta{T}(t)$, which we term the zigzag protocol, allows evaluating possible variations of the SLP values with time or temperature., Comment: main text: 30 pages, 9 figures

Coherent light-matter interactions mediated by opto-magnetic phenomena like the inverse Faraday effect (IFE) are expected to provide a non-thermal pathway for ultrafast manipulation of magnetism on timescales as short as the excitation pulse itself. As the IFE scales with the spin-orbit coupling strength of the involved electronic states, photo-exciting the strongly spin-orbit coupled core-level electrons in magnetic materials appears as an appealing method to transiently generate large opto-magnetic moments. Here, we investigate this scenario in a ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloy by using intense and circularly polarized pulses of extreme ultraviolet radiation. Our results reveal ultrafast and strong helicity-dependent magnetic effects which are in line with the characteristic fingerprints of an IFE, corroborated by ab initio opto-magnetic IFE theory and atomistic spin dynamics simulations.

Ultrafast manipulation of magnetic order has challenged our understanding the fundamental and dynamic properties of magnetic materials. So far single shot magnetic switching has been limited to ferrimagnetic alloys and multilayers. In ferromagnetic (FM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) bilayers, exchange bias (He) arises from the interfacial exchange coupling between the two layers and reflects the microscopic orientation of the antiferromagnet. Here we demonstrate the possibility of single shot switching of the antiferromagnet (change of the sign and amplitude of He) with a single femtosecond laser pulse in IrMn/CoGd bilayers. We demonstrate the switching for a wide range of fluences for different layer thicknesses and compositions. Atomistic simulations predict ultrafast switching and recovery of the AFM magnetization on a timescale of 2 ps. These results provide the fastest and the most energy-efficient method to set the exchange bias and pave the way to potential applications for ultrafast spintronic devices.

We present a general approach to the derivation of the effective anisotropy field which determines the dynamical behaviour of magnetic spins according to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The approach is based on the gradient in spherical polar coordinates with the final results being expressed in Cartesian coordinates as usually applied in atomistic and micromagnetic model calculations. The approach is generally valid for all orders of anisotropies including higher order combinations of azimuthal and rotational anisotropies often found in functional magnetic materials such as permanent magnets and an emerging class of antiferromagnetic materials with applications in spintronics. Anisotropies are represented in terms of spherical harmonics which have the important property of rational temperature scaling. We have computationally studied the properties of higher-order magnetic anisotropy constants in an L10/A1-FePt coreshell system which is characterized by a strong second-order 2-ion Fe-Pt anisotropy component. We show that the coreshell structure induces an unexpected fourth-order anisotropy constant K2 the magnitude of which varies non-monotonically with the core-size ratio R reaching a peak at R = 0.50. Furthermore, we find that K2 scales with the normalized magnetization by (M/Ms)^2.2 at temperatures below the Curie temperature - a remarkable deviation from the established Callen-Callen theory which instead predicts a scaling exponent of 10. Advanced magnetic recording paradigms typically use large temperature changes to drive switching which is detrimental to device longevity, hence finding non-thermal routes is crucial for future applications. By employing atomistic spin-lattice dynamics simulations, we show efficient coherent magnetisation switching triggered by THz phonon excitation in insulating single species materials. The key ingredient is excitation near the $P$-point of the spectrum in conditions where spins typically cannot be excited and when manifold $k$ phonon modes are accessible at the same frequency. We employ an atomistic model using a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg Hamiltonian exchange to study computationally the dependence of the Curie temperature of L10-FePt on finite-size and surface effects in Heat-assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) media. We demonstrate the existence of a size threshold at 3.5nm below which the impact of finite-size effects start to permeate into the center of the grains and contribute to the reduction of the Curie temperature. We find a correlation between the Curie temperature and the percentage of atomistic bonds lost on the surface as a function of grain size, which can be extended to apply to not only L10-FePt but also generic magnetic systems of any crystal structure. Micromagnetic modelling provides the ability to simulate large magnetic systems accurately without the computational cost limitation imposed by atomistic modelling. Through micromagnetic modelling it is possible to simulate systems consisting of thousands of grains over a time range of nanoseconds to years, depending upon the solver used. Here we present the creation and release of an open-source multi-timescale micromagnetic code combining three key solvers: Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert; Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch; Kinetic Monte Carlo. This code, called MARS (Models of Advanced Recording Systems), is capable of accurately simulating the magnetisation dynamics in large and structurally complex single- and multi-layered granular systems. The short timescale simulations are achieved for systems far from and close to the Curie point via the implemented Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert and Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch solvers respectively. This enables read/write simulations for general perpendicular magnetic recording and also state of the art heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). The long timescale behaviour is simulated via the Kinetic Monte Carlo solver, enabling investigations into signal-to-noise ratio and data longevity. The combination of these solvers opens up the possibility of multi-timescale simulations within a single software package. For example the entire HAMR process from initial data writing and data read back to long term data storage is possible via a single simulation using MARS. The use of atomistic parameterisation for the material input of MARS enables highly accurate material descriptions which provide a bridge between atomistic simulation and real world experimentation. Thus MARS is capable of performing simulations for all aspects of recording media research and development. In this paper, we address the problem that standard stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (sLLG) simulations typically produce results that show unphysical mesh-size dependence. The root cause of this problem is that the effects of spin wave fluctuations are ignored in sLLG. We propose to represent the effect of these fluctuations by a "FUll-Spinwave-Scaled Stochastic LLG", or FUSSS LLG method. In FUSSS LLG, the intrinsic parameters of the sLLG simulations are first scaled by scaling factors that integrate out the spin wave fluctuations up to the mesh size, and the sLLG simulation is then performed with these scaled parameters. We developed FUSSS LLG by studying the Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) in Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B cubes. The nominal scaling greatly reduced the mesh size dependence relative to sLLG. We further discovered that adjusting one scaling exponent by less than 10% delivered fully mesh-size-independent results for the FMR peak. We then performed three tests and validations of our FUSSS LLG with this modified scaling. 1) We studied the same FMR but with magnetostatic fields included. 2) We simulated the total magnetization of the Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B cube. 3) We studied the effective, temperature- and sweeping rate-dependent coercive field of the cubes. In all three cases we found that FUSSS LLG delivered essentially mesh-size-independent results, which tracked the theoretical expectations better than unscaled sLLG. Motivated by these successful validations, we propose that FUSSS LLG provides marked, qualitative progress towards accurate, high precision modeling of micromagnetics in hard, permanent magnets., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Anti-ferromagnetic materials have the possibility to offer ultra fast, high data density spintronic devices. A significant challenge is the reliable detection of the state of the antiferromagnet, which can be achieved using exchange bias. Here we develop an atomistic spin model of the athermal training effect, a well known phenomenon in exchange biased systems where the bias is significantly reduced after the first hysteresis cycle. We find that the setting process in granular thin films relies on the presence of interfacial mixing between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers. We systematically investigate the effect of the intermixing and find that the exchange bias, switching field and coercivity all increase with increased intermixing. The interfacial spin state is highly frustrated leading to a systematic decrease in interfacial ordering of the ferromagnet. This metastable spin structure of initially irreversible spins leads to a large effective exchange coupling and thus large increase in the switching field. After the first hysteresis cycle these metastable spins drop into a reversible ground state that is repeatable for all subsequent hysteresis cycles, demonstrating that the effect is truly athermal. Our simulations provide new insights into the role of interface mixing and the importance of metastable spin structures in exchange biased systems which could help with the design an optimisation of antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.

We explore the helicity-independent light-induced nucleation of skyrmion lattices in ferromagnetic cobalt-based trilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Using Atomistic Spin Dynamics simulations, we show that a high temperature excitation followed by magnon drops and their non-equilibrium relaxation, accessed by an ultrafast laser excitation with specific duration and intensity, can lead to the generation of a skyrmion lattice stable at room temperature. The nucleation window, the topological density and the skyrmion polarity can be additionally manipulated by external magnetic fields. Our results provide insight into the non-equilibrium nature of skyrmionic excitations at non-zero temperatures and pave additional routes for their use in information technologies.

Antiferromagnetic spintronic devices have the potential to outperform conventional ferromagnetic devices due to their ultrafast dynamics and high data density. A challenge in designing these devices is the control and detection of the orientation of the anti-ferromagnet. One of the most promising ways to achieve this is through the exchange bias effect. This is of particular importance in large scale multigranular devices. Due to the large system sizes, previously, only micromagnetic simulations have been possible, these have an assumed distribution of antiferromagnetic anisotropy directions. Here, we use an atomistic model where the distribution of antiferromagnetic anisotropy directions occurs naturally and the exchange bias occurs due to the intrinsic disorder in the antiferromagnet. We perform large scale simulations, generating realistic values of exchange bias. We find a strong temperature dependance of the exchange bias, which approaches zero at the blocking temperature while the coercivity has a peak at the blocking temeprature due to the superparamagnetic flipping of the antiferromagnet during the hysteresis loop. We find a large discrepancy between the exchange bias predicted from a geometric model of the antiferromagnetic interface indicating the importance of grain edge effects in multigranular exchange biased systems. The grain size dependence shows the expected peak due to a competition between the superparamagnetic nature of small grains and reduction in the statistical imbalance in the number of interfacial spins for larger grain sizes. Our simulations confirm the existence of single antiferromagnetic domains within each grain. The model gives insights into the physical origin of exchange bias and provides a route to developing optimised nanoscale antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.

A unified model of molecular and atomistic spin dynamics is presented enabling simulations both in microcanonical and canonical ensembles without the necessity of additional phenomenological spin damping. Transfer of energy and angular momentum between the lattice and the spin systems is achieved by a coupling term based upon the spin-orbit interaction. The characteristic spectra of the spin and phonon systems are analyzed for different coupling strength and temperatures. The spin spectral density shows magnon modes together with the uncorrelated noise induced by the coupling to the lattice. The effective damping parameter is investigated showing an increase with both coupling strength and temperature. The model paves the way to understanding magnetic relaxation processes beyond the phenomenological approach of the Gilbert damping and the dynamics of the energy transfer between lattice and spins., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Using an atomistic spin model, we have simulated spin wave injection and propagation into antiferromagnetic IrMn from an exchange coupled CoFe layer. The spectral characteristics of the exited spin waves have a complex beating behavior arising from the non-collinear nature of the antiferromagnetic order. We find that the frequency response of the system depends strongly on the strength and frequency of oscillating field excitations. We also find that the strength of excited spin waves strongly decays away from the interfacial layer with a frequency dependent attenuation. Our findings suggest that spin waves generated by coupled ferromagnets are too weak to reverse IrMn in their entirety even with resonant excitation of a coupled ferromagnet. However, efficient spin wave injection into the antiferromagnet is possible due to the non-collinear nature of the IrMn spin ordering., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Laser-induced manipulation of magnetism at the nanoscale is a rapidly growing research topic with potential for applications in spintronics. In this work, we address the role of the scattering cross section, thermal effects, and laser fluence on the magnetic, structural, and chemical stability of individual magnetic nanoparticles excited by single femtosecond laser pulses. We find that the energy transfer from the fs laser pulse to the nanoparticles is limited by the Rayleigh scattering cross section, which in combination with the light absorption of the supporting substrate and protective layers determines the increase in the nanoparticle temperature. We investigate individual Co nanoparticles (8 to 20 nm in size) as a prototypical model system, using x-ray photoemission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy upon excitation with single femtosecond laser pulses of varying intensity and polarization. In agreement with calculations, we find no deterministic or stochastic reversal of the magnetization in the nanoparticles up to intensities where ultrafast demagnetization or all-optical switching is typically reported in thin films. Instead, at higher fluences, the laser pulse excitation leads to photo-chemical reactions of the nanoparticles with the protective layer, which results in an irreversible change in the magnetic properties. In this work, we present evidence for the existence of a magnonic current on the sub-picosecond time-scale in a ferrimagnetic bilayer and its effect on ultrafast spin dynamics. The ferrimagnet, GdFeCo, is a material known to undergo ultrafast switching within 1-2ps after excitation with femtosecond laser pulses. Here, we show that the strong thermal gradients induced by applying femtosecond laser pulses and the presence of chemical inhomogeneities lead to local imbalances in the effective temperatures of the spins that produces a rapid transfer of spin angular momentum, which we interpret as an ultrafast spin Seebeck effect. We have quantified the typical magnon propagation in such a system. The results show ballistic magnon propagation with 30nm/ps velocities. The characteristic time scale of such magnon propagation indicates that this magnon transport can play an important role in switching, a crucial piece of understanding towards realising next generation data processing devices that operate at much higher frequencies., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology represents the most promising candidate to replace the current perpendicular recording paradigm to achieve higher storage densities. To better understand HAMR dynamics in granular media we need to describe accurately the magnetisation dynamics up to temperatures close to the Curie point. To this end we propose a multiscale approach based on the micromagnetic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch (LLB) equation of motion parametrised using atomistic calculations. The LLB formalism describes the magnetisation dynamics at finite temperature and allows to efficiently simulate large system sizes and long time scales. Atomistic simulations provide the required temperature dependent input quantities for the LLB equation, such as the equilibrium magnetisation and the anisotropy, and can be used to capture the detailed magnetisation dynamics. The multiscale approach makes possible to overcome the computational limitations of atomistic models in dealing with large systems, such as a recording track, while incorporating the basic physics of the HAMR process. We investigate the magnetisation dynamics of a single FePt grain as function of the properties of the temperature profile and applied field and test the micromagnetic results against atomistic calculations. Our results prove the appropriateness and potential of the approach proposed here where the granular model is able to reproduce the atomistic simulations and capture the main properties of a HAMR medium.

Understanding the damping mechanism in finite size systems and its dependence on temperature is a critical step in the development of magnetic nanotechnologies. In this work, nano-sized materials are modeled via atomistic spin dynamics, the damping parameter being extracted from Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) simulations applied for FePt systems, generally used for heat-assisted magnetic recording media (HAMR). We find that the damping increases rapidly close to Tc and the effect is enhanced with decreasing system size, which is ascribed to scattering at the grain boundaries. Additionally, FMR methods provide the temperature dependence of both damping and the anisotropy, important for the development of HAMR. Semi-analytical calculations show that, in the presence of a grain size distribution, the FMR linewidth can decrease close to the Curie temperature due to a loss of inhomogeneous line broadening. The balance between low power consumption and high efficiency in memory devices is a major limiting factor in the development of new technologies. Magnetic random access memories (MRAM) based on CoFeB/MgO magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) have been proposed as candidates to replace the current technology due to their non-volatility, high thermal stability and efficient operational performance. Understanding the size and temperature dependence of the energy barrier and the nature of the transition mechanism across the barrier between stable configurations is a key issue in the development of MRAM. Here we use an atomistic spin model to study the energy barrier to reversal in CoFeB/MgO nanodots to determine the effects of size, temperature and external field. We find that for practical device sizes in the 10-50 nm range the energy barrier has a complex behaviour characteristic of a transition from a coherent to domain wall driven reversal process. Such a transition region is not accessible to simple analytical estimates of the energy barrier preventing a unique theoretical calculation of the thermal stability. The atomistic simulations of the energy barrier give good agreement with experimental measurements for similar systems which are at the state of the art and can provide guidance to experiments identifying suitable materials and MTJ stacks with the desired thermal stability.

Ultrafast control of the magnetization in ps timescales by fs laser pulses offers an attractive avenue for applications such as fast magnetic devices for logic and memory. However, ultrafast helicity-independent all-optical switching (HI-AOS) of the magnetization has thus far only been observed in Gd-based, ferrimagnetic amorphous (\textit{a}-) rare earth-transition metal (\textit{a}-RE-TM) systems, and a comprehensive understanding of the reversal mechanism remains elusive. Here, we report HI-AOS in ferrimagnetic \textit{a}-Gd$_{22-x}$Tb$_x$Co$_{78}$ thin films, from x = 0 to x = 18, and elucidate the role of Gd in HI-AOS in \textit{a}-RE-TM alloys and multilayers. Increasing Tb content results in increasing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and coercivity, without modifying magnetization density, and slower remagnetization rates and higher critical fluences for switching but still shows picosecond HI-AOS. Simulations of the atomistic spin dynamics based on the two-temperature model reproduce these results qualitatively and predict that the lower damping on the RE sublattice arising from the small spin-orbit coupling of Gd (with $L = 0$) is instrumental for the faster dynamics and lower critical fluences of the Gd-rich alloys. Annealing \textit{a}-Gd$_{10}$Tb$_{12}$Co$_{78}$ leads to slower dynamics which we argue is due to an increase in damping. These simulations strongly indicate that acounting for element-specific damping is crucial in understanding HI-AOS phenomena. The results suggest that engineering the element specific damping of materials can open up new classes of materials that exhibit low-energy, ultrafast HI-AOS.

$Co$-doping of $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ magnetic nanoparticles is an effective way to tailor their magnetic properties. When considering the two extreme cases of the $Co_{x}Fe_{3-x}O_{4}$ series, i.e. the $x=0$ and $x=1$ values, one finds that the system evolves from a negative cubic-anisotropy energy constant, $K_{C}^{-}<0$, to a positive one, $K_{C}^{+}>0$. Thus, what happens for intermediate $x$-compositions? In this work we present a very simple phenomenological model for the anisotropy, under the \textit{macrospin} approximation, in which the resultant anisotropy is just directly proportional to the amount of $Co$. First, we perform a detailed analysis on a rather ideal system in which the extreme values have the same magnitude (i.e. $|K_{C}^{-}|=|K_{C}^{+}|$) and then we focus on the real $Co_{x}Fe_{3-x}O_{4}$ system, for which $|K_{C}^{+}|\sim 18|K_{C}^{-}|$. Remarkably, the approach reproduces rather well the experimental values of the heating performance of $Co_{x}Fe_{3-x}O_{4}$ nanoparticles, suggesting that our simple approach may in fact be a good representation of the real situation. This gives rise to an intriguing related possibility arises: a $Co$-doping composition should exist for which the effective anisotropy tends to zero, estimated here as 0.05., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Spin-based electronics has evolved into a major field of research that broadly encompasses different classes of materials, magnetic systems, and devices. This review describes recent advances in spintronics that have the potential to impact key areas of information technology and microelectronics. We identify four main axes of research: nonvolatile memories, magnetic sensors, microwave devices, and beyond-CMOS logic. We discuss state-of-the-art developments in these areas as well as opportunities and challenges that will have to be met, both at the device and system level, in order to integrate novel spintronic functionalities and materials in mainstream microelectronic platforms., Comment: Review written by the SpinFactory European Consortium

The magnetic stray field is an unavoidable consequence of ferromagnetic devices and sensors leading to a natural asymmetry in magnetic properties. Such asymmetry is particularly undesirable for magnetic random access memory applications where the free layer can exhibit bias. Using atomistic dipole-dipole calculations we numerically simulate the stray magnetic field emanating from the magnetic layers of a magnetic memory device with different geometries. We find that edge effects dominate the overall stray magnetic field in patterned devices and that a conventional synthetic antiferromagnet structure is only partially able to compensate the field at the free layer position. A granular reference layer is seen to provide near-field flux closure while additional patterning defects add significant complexity to the stray field in nanoscale devices. Finally we find that the stray field from a nanoscale antiferromagnet is surprisingly non-zero arising from the imperfect cancellation of magnetic sublattices due to edge defects. Our findings provide an outline of the role of different layer structures and defects in the effective stray magnetic field in nanoscale magnetic random access memory devices and atomistic calculations provide a useful tools to study the stray field effects arising from a wide range of defects.

The dynamic process of assisted magnetic switchins has been simulated to investigate the associated physics. The model uses a Voronoi construction to determine the physical structure of the nano granular thin film recording media; and the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch (LLB) equation is solved to evolve the magnetic system in time. The reduction of the magnetization is determined over a range of peak system temperatures and for a number of anisotropy values. The results show that the HAMR process is not simply magnetization reversal over a thermally reduced energy barrier. To achieve full magnetization reversal (for all anisotropies investigated) an applied field strength of at least 6kOe is required and the peak system temperature must reach at least the Curie point (Tc). When heated to Tc the magnetization associated with each grain is destroyed, which invokes the non-precessional linear reversal mode. Reversing the magnetization through this linear reversal mode is favourable, as the reversal time is two orders of magnitude smaller than that associated with precession. Under these conditions, as the temperature decreases to ambient, the magnetization recovers in the direction of the applied field, completing the reversal process. Also the model produces results which are consistent with the concept of thermal writability; when heating the media to Tc, the smaller grains require a larger field strength to reverse the magnetization.

The magnetic anisotropy of antiferromagnets plays a crucial role in stabilising the magnetisation of many spintronic devices. In non-collinear antiferromagnets such as IrMn the symmetry and temperature dependence of the effective anisotropy are poorly understood. Theoretical and experimental calculations of the effective anisotropy constant for IrMn differ by two orders of magnitude, while the symmetry has been calculated as uniaxial in contradiction to the assumed relationship between crystallographic symmetry and temperature dependence of the anisotropy from the Callen-Callen law. In this letter we determine the effective anisotropy energy surface of \Lonetwo - \IrMn using an atomistic spin model and constrained Monte Carlo simulations. We find that meta-stable spin structures lower the overall energy barrier to a tenth of that estimated from simple geometrical considerations, significantly reducing the discrepancy between experiment and theory. The temperature scaling of the anisotropy energy barrier shows an exponent of \factor, close to a uniaxial exponent of 3. Our results demonstrate the importance of non-collinear spin states on the thermal stability of antiferromagnets with consequences for the practical application of antiferromagnets in devices operating at elevated temperatures., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Wereport the results of a sequence of magnetisation and magneto-optical studies on laser ablated thin films of ZnCoAlO and ZnCoO that contain a small amount of metallic cobalt. The results are compared to those expected when all the magnetization is due to isolated metallic clusters of cobalt and with an oxide sample that is almost free from metallic inclusions. Using a variety of direct magnetic measurements and also magnetic circular dichroism we find that there is ferromagnetism within both the oxide and the metallic inclusions, and furthermore that these magnetic components are exchange-coupled when aluminium is included. This enhances both the coercive field and the remanence. Hence the presence of a controlled quantity of metallic nanoparticles in ZnAlO can improve the magnetic response of the oxide, thus giving great advantages for applications in spintronics., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

A theoretical investigation of magnetic relaxation processes in single domain particles driven by colored noise is presented. Two approaches are considered; the Landau-Lifshitz-Miyazaki-Seki equation, which is a Langevin dynamics model based on the introduction of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck correlated noise into the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation and a Generalized Master Equation approach whereby the ordinary Master Equation is modified through the introduction of an explicit memory kernel. It is found that colored noise is likely to become important for high anisotropy materials where the characteristic system time, in this case the inverse Larmor precession frequency, becomes comparable to the correlation time. When the escape time is much longer than the correlation time, the relaxation profile of the spin has a similar exponential form to the ordinary LLG equation, while for low barrier heights and intermediate damping, for which the correlation time is a sizable fraction of the escape time, an unusual bi-exponential decay is predicted as a characteristic of colored noise. At very high damping and correlation times, the time profile of the spins exhibits a more complicated, noisy trajectory., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We investigated the atomic fill site probability distributions across supercell structures of RT12-xTi (R=Nd, Sm, T=Fe, Co). We use a combined molecular dynamics and Boltzmann distribution approach to extrapolate the probability distributions for Ti substitution from lower to higher temperatures with an equilibrium condition to assess how temperature affects the predictability of the structures fill path. It was found that the Nd and Sm based Fe systems have the highest filling probability path at lower temperatures but the cohesive energy change due to Ti substitution in Sm and Nd based crystals indicates that a more stable system could be achieved with a combination Co and Fe in the transition metal site., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

We have investigated the magnetic damping of precessional spin dynamics in defect-controlled epitaxial grown Fe$_3$O$_4$(111)/Yttria-stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) nanoscale films by all-optical pump-probe measurements. The intrinsic damping constant of the defect-free Fe$_3$O$_4$ film is found to be strikingly larger than that of the as-grown Fe$_3$O$_4$ film with structural defects. We demonstrate that the population of the first-order perpendicular standing spin wave (PSSW) mode, which is exclusively observed in the defect-free film under sufficiently high external magnetic fields, leads to the enhancement of the magnetic damping of the uniform precession (Kittel) mode. We propose a physical picture in which the PSSW mode acts as an additional channel for the extra energy dissipation of the Kittel mode. The energy transfer from Kittel mode to PSSW mode increases as in-plane magnetization precession becomes more uniform, resulting in the unique intrinsic magnetic damping enhancement in the defect-free Fe$_3$O$_4$ film., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Exchange coupling between magnetic grains is essential for maintaining the stability of stored information in magnetic recording media. Using an atomistic spin model, we have investigated the coupling between neighbouring magnetic grains where magnetic impurity atoms have migrated into the non-magnetic grain boundary. We find that when the impurity density is low a biquadratic term in addition to the bilinear term is required to properly describe the inter-granular exchange coupling. The temperature dependence both terms is found to follow a power law behaviour with the biquadratic exchange constant decaying faster than the bilinear. For increasing grain boundary thickness the inter-granular exchange is lower and decays faster with temperature. Further simulations of a grain at a bit boundary show an unexpected energy minimum for in-plane magnetisation which can only be reproduced using a biquadratic exchange term., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Magnetic nanoparticles constitute potential nanomedicine tools based on the possibility to obtain different responses triggered by safe remote stimulus. However, such richness can be detrimental if the different performances are not accurately differentiated (and controlled). An example of this is the reorientation of magnetic nanoparticles under the influence of AC fields, which can be exploited for either magneto-mechanical actuation (MMA) at low frequencies (tens of Hz); or heat release at large ones (MHz range). While it is clear that Brownian rotation is responsible for MMA, its heating role in the high-frequency regime is not clear. In this work we aim to shed light on this issue, which needs to be well understood for applications in magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) or heat triggered drug release. Using a Brownian dynamics (BD) simulation technique, we have theoretically investigated the contribution of Brownian reversal in disk-shape particles (to enhance the viscous interaction with the environment) over a wide range of frequencies. Our results predict essentially negligible hysteresis losses both in the high- and low-frequency domains, with completely different implications: highly efficient MMA, but negligible MFH performance. Importantly, complementary micromagnetic simulations indicate that the large magnetic torque assumption of the BD simulations is supported by hexagonal-shape disks, up to field amplitudes of the order of 100 Oe. Larger fields would lead to N\'eel reversal which, noteworthy, predicts significant heating performance. The possibility of switching between the MMA and MFH response by changing the amplitude of the AC field, together with their distinct optimal conditions (large magnetic torque for MMF; large heating for MFH), points to such hexagonal nanodisks as promising nanomedicine agents with double mechanical and heating functionalities., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures

Power consumption is the main limitation in the development of new high performance random access memory for portable electronic devices. Magnetic RAM (MRAM) with CoFeB/MgO based magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) is a promising candidate for reducing the power consumption given its non-volatile nature while achieveing high performance. The dynamic properties and switching mechanisms of MTJs are critical to understanding device operation and to enable scaling of devices below 30 nm in diameter. Here we show that the magnetic reversal mechanism is incoherent and that the switching is thermally nucleated at device operating temperatures. Moreover, we find an intrinsic thermal switching field distribution arising on the sub-nanosecond timescale even in the absence of size and anisotropy distributions or material defects. These features represent the characteristic signature of the dynamic properties in MTJs and give an intrinsic limit to reversal reliability in small magnetic nanodevices., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, and 7 pages of supplementary information and figures

The generic problem of extracting information on intrinsic particle properties from the whole class of interacting magnetic fine particle systems is a long standing and difficult inverse problem. As an example, the Switching Field Distribution (SFD) is an important quantity in the characterization of magnetic systems, and its determination in many technological applications, such as recording media, is especially challenging. Techniques such as the first order reversal curve (FORC) methods, were developed to extract the SFD from macroscopic measurements. However, all methods rely on separating the contributions to the measurements of the intrinsic SFD and the extrinsic effects of magnetostatic and exchange interactions. We investigate the underlying physics of the FORC method by applying it to the output predictions of a kinetic Monte-Carlo model with known input parameters. We show that the FORC method is valid only in cases of weak spatial correlation of the magnetization and suggest a more general approach.

The exchange interaction determines the ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of atomic spins. When ferromagnets and antiferromagnets are coupled together, they often exhibit the exchange bias effect, a unidirectional interface exchange field causing a shift of the magnetic hysteresis loop. The effective magnitude of this interface exchange field is at most a few percent of the bulk exchange, arising from pinned interfacial spins in the antiferromagnet. The pinned spins are known to comprise a small fraction of the total number of interface spins, yet their exact nature and physical origin has so far been elusive. Here we show that in the technologically important $\gamma - IrMn_3/CoFe$ structure the pinned interface spins are in fact delocalised over the whole interface layer. The pinned spins arise from the small imbalance of the number of spins in each magnetic sublattice in the antiferromagnet due to the natural atomic disorder. These pinned spins are strongly coupled to the bulk antiferromagnet explaining their remarkable stability. Moreover, we find that the ferromagnet strongly distorts the interface spin structure of the antiferromagnet, causing a large reversible interface magnetisation that does not contribute to exchange bias. The unexpected delocalised nature of the pinned interface spins explains both their small number and their stability, uncovering the mysterious microscopic origin of the exchange bias effect., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, and 11 pages of supplementary information and figures

We study spin relaxation in n-type bulk GaAs, due to the Dyakonov--Perel mechanism, using ensemble Monte Carlo methods. Our results confirm that spin relaxation time increases with the electronic density in the regime of moderate electronic concentrations and high temperature. We show that the electron-electron scattering in the non-degenerate regime significantly slows down spin relaxation. This result supports predictions by Glazov and Ivchenko. Most importantly, our findings highlight the importance of many-body interactions for spin dynamics: we show that only by properly taking into account electron-electron interactions within the simulations, results for the spin relaxation time---with respect to both electron density and temperature---will reach good {\it quantitative} agreement with corresponding experimental data. Using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) method, helicity-dependent all-optical magnetization switching (HD-AOS) is observed in ferrimagnetic TbFeCo films. The thermal effect and opto-magneto effects are separately justified after single circularly polarized laser pulse. The integral evolution of this ultrafast switching is characterized on different time scales and the defined magnetization reversal time of 460 fs is the fastest ever observed. Combining the heat effect and inverse Faraday effect (IFE), micromagnetic simulations based on a single macro-spin model are performed that reproduce HD-AOS following a linear reversal mechanism.

Magnetic recording using circularly polarized femto-second laser pulses is an emerging technology that would allow write speeds much faster than existing field driven methods. However, the mechanism that drives the magnetization switching in ferromagnets is unclear. Recent theories suggest that the interaction of the light with the magnetized media induces an opto-magnetic field within the media, known as the inverse Faraday effect. Here we show that an alternative mechanism, driven by thermal excitation over the anisotropy energy barrier and a difference in the energy absorption depending on polarization, can create a net magnetization over a series of laser pulses in an ensemble of single domain grains. Only a small difference in the absorption is required to reach magnetization levels observed experimentally and the model does not preclude the role of the inverse Faraday effect but removes the necessity that the opto-magnetic field is 10s of Tesla in strength., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

By means of density functional theory we have undertaken a structural, electronic and magnetic survey of the adsorption of the Fe_xPt_y(x,y=<4) clusters on MgO (001) surface under the generalized gradient approximation. We have tested different atomic adsorption geometries with the aim of scan a wider range of adsorption sites in order to determine the preferential surface covering. Our main conclusion in this respect is that the FePt wets the surface. The intracluster (before and after the adsorption) and cluster-to-surface binding mechanisms were investigated via the adsorption energy, charge transfer, density of states and hybridization analysis. The adsorption energy values increased for those geometries in which keeping the Fe or Pt atom @top-O, the outermost species was moved to cover the surface. In general the unsupported clusters present higher intracluster energies than the adsorbed ones being the average difference of 1.5 eV. In this regard there was a small reduction in the net magnetic moment of the supported clusters due to an internal and external rearrangement of the spin-up/-down charge. Furthermore, a complex and subtle charge transfer between different species takes place having an increasing the Pt and O population at the expense of the lost Fe charge., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Optical interconnect has emerged as the front-runner to replace electrical interconnect especially for off-chip communication. However, a major drawback with optical interconnects is the need for photodetectors and amplifiers at the receiver, implemented usually by direct bandgap semiconductors and analog CMOS circuits, leading to large energy consumption and slow operating time. In this article, we propose a new optical interconnect architecture that uses a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) at the receiver side that is switched by femtosecond laser pulses. The state of the MTJ can be sensed using simple digital CMOS latches, resulting in significant improvement in energy consumption. Moreover, magnetization in the MTJ can be switched on the picoseconds time-scale and our design can operate at a speed of 5 Gbits/sec for a single link.

Nanopatterned FePt nano-dots often exhibit low coercivity and a broad switching field distribution, which could arise due to edge damage during the patterning process causing a reduction in the $L1_{0}$ ordering required for a high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Using an atomistic spin model, we study the magnetization reversal behavior of $L1_{0}$ FePt nanodots with soft magnetic edges. We show that reversal is initiated by nucleation for the whole range of edge widths studied. For narrow soft edges the individual nucleation events dominate reversal; for wider edges, multiple nucleation at the edge creates a circular domain wall at the interface which precedes complete reversal. Our simulations compare well with available analytical theories. The increased edge width further reduces and saturates the required nucleation field. The nucleation field and the activation volume manipulate the thermally induced switching field distribution. By control of the properties of dot edges using proper patterning methods, it should be possible to realize exchange spring bit patterned media without additional soft layers., Comment: 9 pages and 6 figures

The origin of the metamagnetic antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition of FeRh is a subject of much debate. Competing explanations invoke magnetovolume effects and purely ther- modynamic transitions within the spin system. It is experimentally difficult to observe the changes in the magnetic system and the lattice simultaneously, leading to differing conclusions over which mechanism is responsible for the phase transition. A non-collinear electronic structure study by Mryasov [O.N. Mryasov, Phase Transitions 78, 197 (2005)] showed that non-linear behavior of the Rh moment leads to higher order exchange terms in FeRh. Using atomistic spin dynamics (ASD) we demonstrate that the phase transition can occur due to the competition between bilinear and the higher order four spin exchange terms in an effective spin Hamiltonian. The phase transition we see is of first order and shows thermal hysteresis in agreement with experimental observations. Simulating sub-picosecond laser heating we show an agreement with pump-probe experiments with a ferromagnetic response on a picosecond timescale.

Atomistic modelling of magnetic materials provides unprecedented detail about the underlying physical processes that govern their macroscopic properties, and allows the simulation of complex effects such as surface anisotropy, ultrafast laser-induced spin dynamics, exchange bias, and mi- crostructural effects. Here we present the key methods used in atomistic spin models which are then applied to a range of magnetic problems. We detail the parallelisation strategies used which enable the routine simulation of extended systems with full atomistic resolution.

Synthetic ferrimagnets are composite magnetic structures formed from two or more anti- ferromagnetically coupled magnetic sublattices with different magnetic moments. Here we report on atomistic spin simulations of the laser-induced magnetization dynamics on such synthetic ferrimag- nets, and demonstrate that the application of ultrashort laser pulses leads to sub-picoscond magnetization dynamics and all-optical switching in a similar manner as in ferrimagnetic alloys. Moreover, we present the essential material properties for successful laser-induced switching, demonstrating the feasibility of using a synthetic ferrimagnet as a high density magnetic storage element without the need of a write field.

Zero Field Cooling (ZFC) and Field Cooling (FC) protocols are commonly used to investigate the properties of magnetic nanoparticle systems. For non-interacting conditions the particle properties are fairly well correlated with the shape of the ZFC/FC curves. However, that is not the case when significant dipolar interparticle interactions (DII) are present, what frequently occurs in experimental samples (e.g. aggregates in biological systems; or the dried powder often used for the ZFC/FC measurements). The purpose of this work is to show how the influence of the DII on the ZFC/FC curves, computed by the volume sample concentration c, can be described in a general way if scaled by the dimensionless parameter c_0 = 2K/M_S^2; where K and M_S are the anisotropy and saturation magnetization constants of the particles, respectively. This scaling parameter, which is straightforwardly derived from the energy equation governing the system, has an analogous meaning to the normalization of the external magnetic field H by the anisotropy field of the particles, H_A = 2K/M_S. We use a Monte Carlo technique to show how apparently different T_B vs. c curves of various particles types (where T_B is the blocking temperature), follow the same trend if scaling c/c_0.
