The intrigue of waves on periodic lattices and gratings has resonated with physicists and mathematicians alike for decades. In-depth analysis has been devoted to the seemingly simplest array system: a one-dimensionally periodic lattice of two-dimensional scatterers embedded in a dispersionless medium governed by the Helmholtz equation. We investigate such a system and experimentally confirm the existence of a new class of generalised Rayleigh--Bloch waves that have been recently theorised to exist in classical wave regimes, without the need for resonant scatterers. Airborne acoustics serves as such a regime and here we experimentally observe the first generalised Rayleigh--Bloch waves above the first cut-off, i.e., in the radiative regime. We consider radiative acoustic lattice resonances along a diffraction grating and connect them to generalised Rayleigh--Bloch waves by considering both short and long arrays of non-resonant 2D cylindrical Neumann scatterers embedded in air. On short arrays, we observe finite lattice resonances under continuous wave excitation, and on long arrays, we observe propagating Rayleigh--Bloch waves under pulsed excitation. We interpret their existence by considering multiple wave scattering theory and, in doing so, unify differing nomenclatures used to describe waves on infinite periodic and finite arrays and the interpretation of their dispersive properties., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The propagation of elastic waves on discrete periodic Euler-Bernoulli mass-beam lattices is characterised by the competition between coupled translational and rotational degrees-of-freedom at the mass-beam junctions. We influence the dynamics of this system by coupling junctions with beyond-nearest-neighbour spatial connections, affording freedom over the locality of dispersion extrema in reciprocal space, facilitating the emergence of interesting dispersion relations. A generalised dispersion relation for an infinite monatomic mass-beam chain, with any integer order combination of non-local spatial connections, is presented. We leverage quantum graph theory to quickly and accurately characterise acoustic metamaterials comprising networks of interconnected pipes. Anisotropic bond lengths are incorporated in the model that correspond to space-coiled acoustic structures to exhibit dispersion spectra reminiscent of hyperbolic metamaterials. We construct two metasurfaces with embedded graph structure and, motivated by the graph theory, infer and fine-tune their dispersive properties to engineer non-resonant negative refraction of acoustic surface waves at their interface. A potential weakness of topological waveguides is that they act on a fixed narrow band of frequencies. However, by 3D printing samples from a photo-responsive polymer, we can obtain a device whose operating frequency can be fine-tuned dynamically using laser excitation. This greatly enhances existing static tunability strategies, typically based on modifying the geometry. We design, simulate, and experimentally characterize an acoustic metasurface comprising of a 1D array of open, sound-hard, cavities, modulated with beyond-nearest-neighbor (BNN) couplings in the form of additional connecting cavities embedded beneath the surface. The hidden complex structure is realized readily with additive manufacturing techniques (3D printing). The dispersive properties of the supported localized acoustic surface waves are influenced by competing power-flow channels provided by the BNN couplings, that generate extrema in the dispersion spectra within the first Brillouin zone. The structure supports negatively dispersing 'backwards' waves that we experimentally verify. We design, simulate and experimentally characterise a reconfigurable elastic metamaterial with beyond-nearest-neighbour (BNN) coupling. The structure is composed from the popular British model construction system, Meccano$^{\text{TM}}$. Research into the orbital angular momentum carried by helical wave-fronts has been dominated by the fields of electromagnetism and acoustics, owing to its practical utility in sensing, communication and tweezing. Despite the huge research effort across the wave community, only recently has elastic orbital angular momentum been theoretically shown to exhibit similar properties. Here we experimentally observe the transfer of elastic orbital angular momentum from a hollow elastic pipe to a fluid in which the pipe is partially submerged, in an elastic analogue of Durnin's slit-ring experiment for optical beams. This transfer is achieved by coupling the dilatational component of guided flexural waves in the pipe with the pressure field in the fluid; the circumferential distribution of the normal stress in the pipe acts as a continuous phased pressure source in the fluid resulting in the generation of Bessel-like acoustic beams. This demonstration has implications for future research into a new regime of orbital angular momentum for elastic waves, as well providing a new method to excite acoustic beams that carry orbital angular momentum that could create a new paradigm shift for acoustic tweezing., Comment: 11 Pages, 5 figures

Galvanised by the emergent fields of metamaterials and topological wave physics, there is currently much interest in controlling wave propagation along structured arrays, and interfacial waves between geometrically different crystal arrangements. We model array and interface waves for structured thin elastic plates, so-called platonic crystals, that share many analogies with their electromagnetic and acoustic counterparts, photonic and phononic crystals, and much of what we present carries across to those systems. These crystals support several forms of edge or array-guided modes, that decay perpendicular to their direction of propagation. To rapidly, and accurately, characterise these modes and their decay we develop a spectral Galerkin method, using a Fourier--Hermite basis, to provide highly accurate dispersion diagrams and mode-shapes, that are confirmed with full scattering simulations. We illustrate this approach using Rayleigh Bloch modes, and generalise high frequency homogenisation, along a line array, to extract the envelope wavelength along the array. Rayleigh-Bloch modes along graded arrays of rings of point masses are investigated and novel forms of the rainbow trapping effect and wave hybridisation are demonstrated. Finally, the method is used to investigate the dispersion curves and mode-shapes of interfacial waves created by geometrical differences in adjoining media.
