Given a rational elliptic surface X over an algebraically closed field, we investigate whether a given natural number k can be the intersection number of two sections of X. If not, we say that k a gap number. We try to answer when gap numbers exist, how they are distributed and how to identify them. We use Mordell-Weil lattices as our main tool, which connects the investigation to the classical problem of representing integers by positive-definite quadratic forms.

Let $X$ be a rational elliptic surface with elliptic fibration $\pi:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of any characteristic. Given a rational elliptic surface over a number field, we study the collection of fibers whose Mordell--Weil rank is greater than the generic rank. We give conditions on the singular fibers to assure that the collection of fibers for which the rank jumps of at least 3 is not thin.

We propose a local Lagrangian for a point particle where its inertia part is modified in the regime of small accelerations. For the standard gravitational central force, it recovers the deep MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) (accelerations $\ll a_0\approx 10^{-10}$m/s$^{2}$) equations of motion in the case of a circular orbit. Perturbations to that turn on higher derivative terms, leading to exponentially unstable solutions that must vanish in order to account for the very small scattering of the Tully-Fisher relation. Unstable solutions linearly growing with time remain valid for a characteristic timescale of at least 3 billion years. We show that vertical perturbations recover similar results to dark matter for old galaxies, but deviations could be present for young ones. We also present ways to probe our approach and describe some of its subtleties, such as the strong equivalence principle (violated in general), the center of mass motion of a composite body, and how in some cases it could overcome Ostrogradsky's instabilities (with naturally occurring piecewise Lagrangians). Our main conclusions regarding our MOND-like proposal are: (i) it constitutes a possible recipe where Ostrogradsky instabilities could be "tamed"; (ii) it is a falsifiable approach in various contexts and (iii) it might explain simultaneously some of the issues usual modified gravity MOND and dark matter phenomenologies have difficulties individually. We investigate the cosmological solutions coming from the double field theory equations of motion after coupling a matter source to them. Assuming constant dilaton and imposing the section condition with respect to the regular coordinates leads to a universe dominated by momentum modes while imposing the section condition with respect to the dual coordinates naturally leads to a universe dominated by momentum modes. We show that both regimes have asymptotic behaviours related by T-duality. This hints towards defining a duality between the clocks considered in each regime and interpreting winding modes as being radiation from the point of view of a Euclidean time., Comment: 7 pages, no figures

We revisit the idea that cosmic strings could source fast radio bursts by taking into account Lorentz boosts and a weaker assumption about the scaling law for the energy of particle decay. We show that the distance relation and time scale, for a specific value of the scaling of energy, are still compatible with observations. However, the event rate predicted by the model is too high when compared to the data. We additionally show that a more realistic string, with a finite thickness, further compounds the problem by prohibiting cusp formation and point out how a superconducting wiggly string could circumvent this issue., Comment: 5 pages

Making use of the T-duality symmetry of superstring theory, and of the double geometry from Double Field Theory, we argue that cosmological singularities of a homogeneous and isotropic universe disappear. We investigate the possibility that the inflaton, in particular in conformal inflation models, is also a chameleon, i.e. that it couples to the energy density of some heavy non-relativistic matter present during inflation. We find new and interesting attractor behaviours, either prolonging inflation, or changing the observables $n_s,r$, depending on the sign of the chameleon coupling exponent. We generalize the action for point particle motion to a double field theory background. After deriving the general equations of motion for these particle geodesics, we specialize to the case of a cosmological background with vanishing antisymmetric tensor field and constant dilaton. We then show that the geodesics can be extended to infinity in both time directions once we define the appropriate physical clock. Following this prescription, we also show the existence of a singularity-free cosmological solution., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We develop an action principle to construct the dynamics that give rise to a minimal generalization of Einstein's equations, where the speed of light ($c$), the gravitational constant ($G$) and the cosmological constant ($\Lambda$) are allowed to vary. Our construction preserves general covariance of the theory, which yields a general dynamical constraint on $c$, $G$ and $\Lambda$. This action is general and can be applied to describe different cosmological solutions. We apply this formulation to the initial condition puzzles of the early universe and show that it generates a dynamical mechanism to obtain the homogeneous and flat universe we observe today. We rewrite the conditions necessary to solve the horizon and flatness problems in this framework, which does not necessarily lead to an accelerated expansion as in inflation. Then, we show how the dynamics of the scalar field that represents $c$ or $G$ (and $\Lambda$) can be used to solve the problems of the early universe cosmology by means of different ways to c-inflate the horizon in the early universe. By taking $\Lambda = 0$, we show that the dynamics of the scalar field representing $c$ can be described once a potential is given., Comment: 19 pages

We consider the consequences of global higher-spin symmetries in quantum field theories on a fixed de Sitter background of spacetime dimension $D \ge 3$. These symmetries enhance the symmetry group associated with the isometries of the de Sitter background and thus strongly constrain the dynamics of the theory. In particular, we consider the case when a higher spin charge acts linearly on a scalar operator to leading order in a Fefferman-Graham expansion near the future/past conformal boundaries. We show that this implies that the expectation values of the operator inserted near the boundaries are asymptotically Gaussian. Thus, these operators have trivial cosmological spectra, and on global de Sitter these operators have only Gaussian correlations between operators inserted near future/past infinity. We study the effects which the back-reaction of long wavelength fluctuations exert on stochastic inflation. In the cases of power-law and Starobinsky inflation these effects are too weak to terminate the stochastic growth of the inflaton field. However, in the case of the cyclic Ekpyrotic scenario, the back-reaction effects prevent the unlimited growth of the scalar field., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

We modify the conformal inflation set-up of \cite{Kallosh:2013hoa}, with a local Weyl invariance, a dynamical Planck scale and an $SO(1,1)$ invariance at high energies, in order to be able to identify the physical scalar with the physical Higgs at low energies, similar to the cyclic Higgs models of \cite{Bars:2013vba}. We obtain a general class of exponentially-corrected potentials that gives a generalized Starobinsky model with an infinite series of $R^p$ corrections, tracing a line in the $(r,n_s)$ plane for CMB fluctuations, with an $r$ that can be made to agree with the recent BICEP2 measurement.
