The circular polarization of the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) is a key observable for characterising the origin of the signal detected by Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) collaborations. Both the astrophysical and the cosmological SGWB can have a sizeable amount of circular polarization, due to Poisson fluctuations in the source properties for the former, and to parity violating processes in the early universe for the latter. Its measurement is challenging since PTA are blind to the circular polarization monopole, forcing us to turn to anisotropies for detection. We study the sensitivity of current and future PTA datasets to circular polarization anisotropies, focusing on realistic modelling of intrinsic and kinematic anisotropies for astrophysical and cosmological scenarios respectively. Our results indicate that the expected level of circular polarization for the astrophysical SGWB should be within the reach of near future datasets, while for cosmological SGWB circular polarization is a viable target for more advanced SKA-type experiments., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures

Recent Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) collaborations show strong evidence for a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) with the characteristic Hellings-Downs inter-pulsar correlations. The signal may stem from supermassive black hole binary mergers, or early universe phenomena. The former is expected to be strongly anisotropic while primordial backgrounds are likely to be predominantly isotropic with small fluctuations. In case the observed SGWB is of cosmological origin, our relative motion with respect to the SGWB rest frame is a guaranteed source of anisotropy, leading to $\textit{O}(10^{-3})$ energy density fluctuations of the SGWB. For such cosmological SGWB, kinematic anisotropies are likely to be larger than the intrinsic anisotropies, akin to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole anisotropy. We assess the sensitivity of current PTA data to the kinematic dipole anisotropy, and we also forecast at what extent the magnitude and direction of the kinematic dipole can be measured in the future with an SKA-like experiment. We also discuss how the spectral shape of the SGWB and the location of the pulsars to monitor affect the prospects of detecting the kinematic dipole with PTA. It has been argued that the models used to analyze data from crossover designs are not appropriate when simple carryover effects are assumed. In this paper, the estimability conditions of the carryover effects are found, and a theoretical result that supports them, additionally, two simulation examples are developed in a non-linear dose-response for a repeated measures crossover trial in two designs: the traditional AB/BA design and a Williams square. Both show that a semiparametric model can detect complex carryover effects and that this estimation improves the precision of treatment effect estimators. We concluded that when there are at least five replicates in each observation period per individual, semiparametric statistical models provide a good estimator of the treatment effect and reduce bias with respect to models that assume either, the absence of carryover or simplex carryover effects. In addition, an application of the methodology is shown and the richness in analysis that is gained by being able to estimate complex carryover effects is evident.

Experimental crossover designs are widely used in medicine, agriculture, and other areas of the biological sciences. Due to the characteristics of the crossover design, each experimental unit has longitudinal observations and the presence of drag effects on the response variable. There is no package in {R} that clearly models data from crossover designs. The {CrossCarry} package presented in this paper allows testing any crossover design as long as the observed response variable belongs to the exponential family, regardless of whether or not there is a washout period. It also allows modeling repeated measurements within each period and extends the correlation structures used in the generalized estimating equations. The family of correlation structures is built that takes into account the particularities of the design, that is, the correlation between and within the periods. It also includes a parametric component for modeling treatment effects and a non-parametric component for modeling time effects and carry-over effects. The non-parametric component is estimated from splines inserted into the generalized estimation equations.

ITER envisages the use of two heating neutral beam injectors plus an optional one as part of the auxiliary heating and current drive system. The 16.5 MW expected neutral beam power per injector is several notches higher than worldwide existing facilities. A Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) was established at Consorzio RFX, exploiting the synergy of two test beds, SPIDER and MITICA. SPIDER is dedicated to developing and characterizing large efficient negative ion sources at relevant parameters in ITER-like conditions: source and accelerator located in the same vacuum where the beam propagates, immunity to electromagnetic interferences of multiple radio-frequency (RF) antennas, avoidance of RF-induced discharges on the outside of the source. Three years of experiments on SPIDER have addressed to the necessary design modifications to enable full performances. The source is presently under a long shut-down phase to incorporate learnings from the experimental campaign. Parallelly, developments on MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER NBI featuring a 1 MV accelerator and ion neutralization, are underway including manufacturing of in-vessel components, while power supplies and auxiliary plants are already under final testing and commissioning. Integration, commissioning and tests of the 1MV power supplies are essential for this first-of-kind system, unparalleled both in research and industry field. The integrated test to confirm 1MV output by combining invertor systems, DC generators and transmission lines extracted errors/accidents in some components. To realize a concrete system for ITER, solutions for the repair and the improvement of the system were developed. Hence, NBTF is emerging as a necessary facility, due to the large gap with existing injectors, effectively dedicated to identify issues and find solutions to enable successful ITER NBI operations in a time bound fashion.

A model for cross-over designs with repeated measures within each period was developed. It is obtained using an extension of generalized estimating equations that includes a parametric component to model treatment effects and a non-parametric component to model time and carry-over effects; the estimation approach for the non-parametric component is based on splines. A simulation study was carried out to explore the model properties. Thus, when there is a carry-over effect or a functional temporal effect, the proposed model presents better results than the standard models. Among the theoretical properties, the solution is found to be analogous to weighted least squares. Therefore, model diagnostics can be made adapting the results from a multiple regression. The proposed methodology was implemented in the data sets of the crossover experiments that motivated the approach of this work: systolic blood pressure and insulin in rabbits.

In this study, we propose a family of correlation structures for crossover designs with repeated measures for both, Gaussian and non-Gaussian responses using generalized estimating equations (GEE). The structure considers two matrices: one that models between-period correlation and another one that models within-period correlation. The overall correlation matrix, which is used to build the GEE, corresponds to the Kronecker between these matrices. A procedure to estimate the parameters of the correlation matrix is proposed, its statistical properties are studied and a comparison with standard models using a single correlation matrix is carried out. A simulation study showed a superior performance of the proposed structure in terms of the quasi-likelihood criterion, efficiency, and the capacity to explain complex correlation phenomena/patterns in longitudinal data from crossover designs, Comment: 29 pages, 5 tables, 5 figures. In this work, a new generic parameterisation for $f(R)$ theories is presented. Our proposal for a new equation of state can reproduce an $f(R)$-like evolution that describes late and early time universe within 1-$\sigma$ C.L when we use a combination of distance ladder measurements based on Cosmic Chronometers, Supernovae Ia, Baryon Acoustic Oscillation and finally, Cosmic Microwave Background and Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. Indeed, a family of $f(R)$ cosmological viable scenarios were extensively analysed in the light of late-time measurements, were an Eos reaches a precision better than $99.2\%$ over the numerical solutions for the field equations of this theory. Moreover, in this proposal we extended the study to find constraints at the very early time that can satisfy the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis data on helium fraction, $Y_{p}$. To perform this analysis, and with our generic $w_{f(R)}$ --which can be seemed it at the same level as other parameterisations into the pipeline and analysis of observational surveys-- we consider both background and linear perturbations evolution and constrain beyond the standard $\Lambda$CDM six cosmological parameters. While there are strong constraints at background on the free parameters of our $w_{f(R)}$, we found that $f(R)$ background viable models can set early constraints to the current Hubble constant $H_0$, which is in agreement with CMB data, but when late-time model-independent measurements are considered, $H_0$ is fully compatible with the $R^{H18}$ value. Finally, as an extension of these results, our proposal is capable to distinguish between $f(R)$ scenarios at both routes of the distance ladder showing a good approach to modify gravity at this level., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures. In this paper we study the cosmological evolution of the universe filled with a perfect fluid in the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. Applying an alternative method in which the evolution of the scale factor for this theory is linked to the cosmographic parameters, we obtain a dynamical dark energy solution where the singularity (through a regular bounce or a loitering phase) still can be avoided for $\kappa>0$ with $w>0$. The neutron detection system for characterization of emissivity in ITER Tokamak during DD and DT experiments poses serious challenges to the performance of the diagnostic control and data acquisition system (CDAcq). The ongoing design of the ITER Radial Neutron Camera (RNC) diagnostic is composed by 26 lines of sight (LOS) for complete plasma inspection. The CDAcq system aims at meeting the ITER requirements of delivering the measurement of the real-time neutron emissivity profile with time resolution and control cycle time of 10 ms at peak event rate of 2 MEvents/s per LOS. This measurement demands the generation of the neutron spectra for each LOS with neutron/gamma discrimination and pile up rejection. The neutron spectra can be totally processed in the host CPU or it can use the processed data coming from the system FPGA. The number of neutron counts extracted from the spectra is then used to calculate the neutron emissivity profile using an inversion algorithm. Moreover, it is required that the event based raw data acquired is made available to the ITER data network without local data storage for post processing. The data production for the 2 MEvents/s rate can go up to a maximum data throughput of 0.5 GB/s per channel. The evaluation of the use of real-time data compression techniques in RNC is also depicted in another contribution. To meet the demands of the project a CDAcq prototype has been used to design and test a high-performance distributed software architecture taking advantage of multi-core CPU technology capable of coping with the requirements. This submission depicts the design of the real-time architecture, the spectra algorithms (pulse height analysis, neutron/gamma discrimination and pile-up correction) and the inversion algorithm to calculate the emissivity profile. To achieve the aim of the ITER Radial Neutron Camera Diagnostic, the data acquisition prototype must be compliant with a sustained 2 MHz peak event for each channel with 128 samples of 16 bits per event. The data is acquired and processed using an IPFN FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC-AD2-1600) with 2 digitizer channels of 12-bit resolution and a sampling rate up to 1.6 GSamples/s mounted in a PCIe evaluation board from Xilinx (KC705) installed in the host PC. The acquired data in the event-based data-path is streamed to the host through the PCIe x8 Direct Memory Access (DMA) with a maximum data throughput per channel is 0.5 GB/s of raw data (event base), 1 GB/s per digitizer and up to 1.6 GB/s in continuous mode. The prototype architecture comprises an host PC with two KC705 modules and four channels, producing up to 2 GB/s in event mode and up to 3.2 GB/s in continuous mode. To reduce the produced data throughput from host to ITER databases, the real-time data compression was evaluated using the LZ4 lossless compression algorithm, which provides compression speed up to 400 MB/s per core. This paper presents the architecture, implementation and test of the parallel real-time data compression system running in multiple isolated cores. In this paper the Lagrangian density of a purely kinetic k--essence that models the behavior of dark energy described by four parameterized equations of state proposed by Cooray \& Huterer (Astrophys. J. {\bf 513} L95, 1999), Zhang \& Wu (Mod. Phys. Lett. A {\bf 27} 1250030, 2012), Linder (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 90} 091301, 2003), Efstathiou (Mon. Not. Roy. Astron. Soc. {\bf 310} 842, 2000), and Feng \& Lu (J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. {\bf 1111} 034, 2011) has been reconstructed. This reconstruction is performed using the method outlined by de Putter \& Linder (Astropart.\ Phys.\ {\bf 28} 263, 2007), which makes it possible to solve the equations that relate the Lagrangian density of the k--essence with the given equation of state (EoS) numerically. Finally, we discuss the observational constraints for the models based on 586 SNIa data points from the LOSS data set compiled by Ganeshalingam et al. (Mon. Not Roy. Astron. We present an exact analytical bouncing solution for a closed universe filled with only one exotic fluid with negative pressure, obeying a Generalized Equations of State (GEoS) of the form $P(\rho)=A\rho+B\rho^{\lambda}$, where $A$, $B$ and $\lambda$ are constants. In our solution $A=-1/3$ and $\lambda=1/2$ and $B<0$ is kept as a free parameter. For particular values of the initial conditions, we obtain that our solution obeys Null Energy Condition (NEC), which allows us to reinterpret the matter source as that of a real scalar field, $\phi$, with a positive kinetic energy and a potential $V(\phi)$. We compute numerically the scalar field as a function of time as well as its potential $V(\phi)$, and find an analytical function for the potential that fits very accurately with the numerical results obtained. The shape of this potential can be well described by a Gaussian-type of function, and hence, there is no spontaneous symmetry minimum of $V(\phi)$. We further show that the bouncing scenario is structurally stable under small variations of the parameter $A$, such that a family of bouncing solutions can be find numerically, in a small vicinity of the value $A=-1/3$., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

In this paper we show that the golden ratio is present in the Schwarzschild-Kottler metric. For null geodesics with maximal radial acceleration, the turning points of the orbits are in the golden ratio $\Phi = (\sqrt{5}-1)/2$. This is a general result which is independent of the value and sign of the cosmological constant $\Lambda$.

In this work, we present a study of a purely kinetic k-essence model, characterized basically by a parameter $\alpha$ in presence of a bulk dissipative term, whose relationship between viscous pressure $\Pi$ and energy density $\rho$ of the background follows a polytropic type law $\Pi \propto \rho^{\lambda+1/2}$, where $\lambda$, in principle, is a parameter without restrictions. Analytical solutions for the energy density of the k-essence field are found in two specific cases: $\lambda=1/2$ and $\lambda=(1-\alpha)/2\alpha$, and then we show that these solutions posses the same functional form than the non-viscous counterpart. Finally, both approach are contrasted with observational data from type Ia supernova, and the most recent Hubble parameter measurements, and therefore, the best values for the parameters of the theory are founds., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted in EPJC

Modern Tokamaks have evolved from the initial axisymmetric circular plasma shape to an elongated axisymmetric plasma shape that improves the energy confinement time and the triple product, which is a generally used figure of merit for the conditions needed for fusion reactor performance. However, the elongated plasma cross section introduces a vertical instability that demands a real-time feedback control loop to stabilize the plasma vertical position and velocity. At the Tokamak \`a Configuration Variable (TCV) in-vessel poloidal field coils driven by fast switching power supplies are used to stabilize highly elongated plasmas. TCV plasma experiments have used a PID algorithm based controller to correct the plasma vertical position. In late 2013 experiments a new optimal real-time controller was tested improving the stability of the plasma. This contribution describes the new optimal real-time controller developed. The choice of the model that describes the plasma response to the actuators is discussed. The high order model that is initially implemented demands the application of a mathematical order reduction and the validation of the new reduced model. The lower order model is used to derive the time optimal control law. A new method for the construction of the switching curves of a bang-bang controller is presented that is based on the state-space trajectories that optimize the time to target of the system. A closed loop controller simulation tool was developed to test different possible algorithms and the results were used to improve the controller parameters. A (2+1)-static black hole solution with a nonlinear electric field is derived. The source to the Einstein equations is a nonlinear electrodynamics, satisfying the weak energy conditions, and it is such that the energy momentum tensor is traceless. The obtained solution is singular at the origin of coordinates. The derived electric field E(r) is given by $E(r)=q/r^2$, thus it has the Coulomb form of a point charge in the Minkowski spacetime. In a Brans-Dicke (BD) cosmological model, the energy density associated with some scalar field decreases as $\displaystyle a^{{-2}(\frac{\omega_{o}+ {\frac12}%}{\omega_{o}+1})} $ with the scale factor $a(t)$ of the Universe, giving a matter with an Equation of state $\displaystyle p=-{1/3}(\frac{2+\omega_{o}}{1+\omega_{o}}) \rho $. In this model, the Universe could be closed but still have a nonrelativistic-matter density corresponding to its critical value, $\Omega_{o}=1$.
