Lattice models display bound states for repulsive interactions that smoothly connect to high-energy two-particle states of doubly occupied sites, namely doublons, for strong onsite interactions. In this work, we show that a distinct type of repulsively bound states, namely vortex bound states of two bosons, appear in dimerized square lattices pierced by a uniform $\pi$-flux for moderate interactions. By focusing on a ladder geometry as an illustrative example, we characterize their properties, including chirality-changing decay channels induced by flux detuning, and we develop protocols to perform state preparation in optical lattices via adiabatic sequences or recently developed current imprinting methods. Finally, we show how to measure currents and thus chirality by quenching the system onto isolated pairs of nearest-neighbor sites and then sampling the corresponding dynamics. These results can also provide an experimentally realistic strategy for state preparation and probing of chiral gapped many-body phases in optical lattices.

Interacting bosons on a single plaquette threaded by a $\pi$-flux can spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry, resulting in a chiral loop current. Connecting such bosonic $\pi$-flux plaquettes in a dispersive configuration was recently shown to lead to long-range chiral order. Here, instead, we design a chain of $\pi$-flux plaquettes that exhibits an all-flat-bands single-particle energy spectrum and an extensive set of local symmetries. As a consequence, Elitzur's theorem is shown to prevent the emergence of long-range chiral order. Moreover, projecting the dynamics to a Creutz ladder model with an effective intra-rung interaction allows one to derive simple spin Hamiltonians capturing the ground state degeneracy and the low-energy excitations, and to confirm the absence of chiral order. Finally, we observe an ``impurity self-pinning'' phenomenon, when an extra boson is added on top of a ground state at integer filling, resulting in a non-dispersive density peak. We study Hanbury Brown-Twiss spatial intensity correlations in femtosecond laser-fabricated photonic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices. We first probe edge bound states in the continuum (BICs) of two indistinguishable bosons by mapping the intensity correlations to the two-body bosonic quantum walk. These two-body edge BICs show remarkable robustness in the presence of disorder. The localization of intensity correlation, observed in the linear regime, persists at weak nonlinearity due to the formation of {\it long-lived breathers} and solitons on the edge of the lattice. For stronger nonlinearities, the light tends to be delocalized from the edge site into the bulk, destroying the localization of the intensity correlation. One dimensional confinement in waveguide Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) plays a crucial role to enhance light-matter interactions and to induce a strong quantum nonlinear optical response. In two or higher dimensional settings, this response is reduced since photons can be emitted within a larger phase space, opening the question whether strong photon-photon interaction can be still achieved. In this study, we positively answer this question for the case of a 2D square array of atoms coupled to the light confined into a two-dimensional waveguide. More specifically, we demonstrate the occurrence of long-lived two-photon repulsive and bound states with genuine 2D features. Furthermore, we observe signatures of these effects also in free-space atomic arrays in the form of weakly-subradiant in-band scattering resonances. We numerically analyze the feasibility of a platform-neutral, general strategy to perform quantum simulations of fermionic lattice field theories under open boundary conditions. The digital quantum simulator requires solely one- and two-qubit gates and is scalable since integrating each Hamiltonian term requires a finite (non-scaling) cost. The exact local fermion encoding we adopt relies on auxiliary $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge fields by adding a pure gauge Hamiltonian term akin to the Toric Code. By numerically emulating the quantum simulator real-time dynamics, we observe a timescale separation for spin- and charge-excitations in a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Hubbard ladder in the $t-J$ model limit., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures

Neurophysiology research has demonstrated that it is possible and valuable to investigate sensory processing in scenarios involving continuous sensory streams, such as speech and music. Over the past 10 years or so, novel analytic frameworks combined with the growing participation in data sharing has led to a surge of publicly available datasets involving continuous sensory experiments. However, open science efforts in this domain of research remain scattered, lacking a cohesive set of guidelines. This paper presents an end-to-end open science framework for the storage, analysis, sharing, and re-analysis of neural data recorded during continuous sensory experiments. We propose a data structure that builds on existing custom structures (Continuous-event Neural Data or CND), providing precise naming conventions and data types, as well as a workflow for storing and loading data in the general-purpose BIDS structure. The framework has been designed to interface with existing EEG/MEG analysis toolboxes, such as Eelbrain, NAPLib, MNE, and mTRF-Toolbox. We present guidelines by taking both the user view (rapidly re-analyse existing data) and the experimenter view (store, analyse, and share), making the process straightforward and accessible. Additionally, we introduce a web-based data browser that enables the effortless replication of published results and data re-analysis.

This work explores the possibility of creating and controlling unconventional nonlinearities by periodic driving, in a broad class of systems described by the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE). By means of a parent quantum many-body description, we demonstrate that such driven systems are well captured by an effective NLSE with emergent nonlinearities, which can be finely controlled by tuning the driving sequence. We first consider a general class of two-mode nonlinear systems - relevant to optical Kerr cavities, waveguides and Bose-Einstein condensates - where we find an emergent four-wave mixing nonlinearity, which originates from pair-hopping processes in the parent quantum picture. Tuning this drive-induced nonlinearity is shown to modify the phase-space topology, which can be detected through relative population and phase measurements. We then couple individual (two-mode) dimers in view of designing extended lattice models with unconventional nonlinearities and controllable pair-hopping processes. Following this general dimerization construction, we obtain an effective lattice model with drive-induced interactions, whose ground-state exhibits orbital order, chiral currents and emergent magnetic fluxes through the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We analyze these intriguing properties both in the weakly-interacting (mean-field) regime, captured by the effective NLSE, and in the strongly-correlated quantum regime. The application of a mechanical strain to a 2D material can create pseudo-magnetic fields and lead to a quantized valley Hall effect. However, measuring valley-resolved effects remains a challenging task due to their inherent fragility and dependence on the sample's proper design. Additionally, non-local transport probes based on multiterminal devices have often proven to be inadequate in yielding conclusive evidence of the valley Hall signal. Here, we introduce an alternative way of detecting the quantized valley Hall effect, which entirely relies on local density measurements, performed deep in the bulk of the sample. The resulting quantized signal is a genuine Fermi sea response, independent of the edge physics, and reflects the underlying valley Hall effect through the Widom-St\v{r}eda formula. Specifically, our approach is based on measuring the variation of the particle density, locally in the bulk, upon varying the strength of the applied strain. This approach to the quantized valley Hall effect is particularly well suited for experiments based on synthetic lattices, where the particle density (or integrated density of states) can be spatially resolved., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

We develop a toolbox for manipulating arrays of Rydberg atoms prepared in high-dimensional hydrogen-like manifolds in the regime of linear Stark and Zeeman effect. We exploit the SO(4) symmetry to characterize the action of static electric and magnetic fields as well as microwave and optical fields on the well-structured manifolds of states with principal quantum number $n$. This enables us to construct generalized large-spin Heisenberg models for which we develop state-preparation and readout schemes. Due to the available large internal Hilbert space, these models provide a natural framework for the quantum simulation of Quantum Field Theories, which we illustrate for the case of the sine-Gordon and massive Schwinger models. Moreover, these high-dimensional manifolds also offer the opportunity to perform quantum information processing operations for qudit-based quantum computing, which we exemplify with an entangling gate and a state-transfer protocol for the states in the neighborhood of the circular Rydberg level., Comment: 16 + 12 pages, 10 figures

Ultracold atoms loaded into higher Bloch bands provide an elegant setting for realizing many-body quantum states that spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry through the formation of chiral orbital order. The applicability of this strategy remains nonetheless limited due to the finite lifetime of atoms in high-energy bands. Here we introduce an alternative framework, suitable for bosonic gases, which builds on assembling square plaquettes pierced by a $\pi$-flux (half a magnetic-flux quantum). This setting is shown to be formally equivalent to an interacting bosonic gas loaded into $p$ orbitals, and we explore the consequences of the resulting chiral orbital order, both for weak and strong onsite interactions. We demonstrate the emergence of a chiral superfluid vortex lattice, exhibiting a long-lived gapped collective mode that is characterized by local chiral currents. This chiral superfluid phase is shown to undergo a phase transition to a chiral Mott insulator for sufficiently strong interactions. The notion of topology in physical systems is associated with the existence of a nonlocal ordering that is insensitive to a large class of perturbations. This brings robustness to the behaviour of the system and can serve as a ground for developing new fault-tolerant applications. We discuss how to design and study a large variety of topology-related phenomena for phonon-like collective modes in arrays of ultracold polarized dipolar particles. These modes are coherently propagating vibrational excitations, corresponding to oscillations of particles around their equilibrium positions, which exist in the regime where long-range interactions dominate over single-particle motion. We demonstrate that such systems offer a distinct and versatile tool to investigate a wide range of topological effects in a single experimental setup with a chosen underlying crystal structure by simply controlling the anisotropy of the interactions via the orientation of the external polarizing field. Applying time-periodic modulations is routinely used to control and design synthetic matter in quantum-engineered settings. In lattice systems, this approach is explored to engineer band structures with non-trivial topological properties, but also to generate exotic interaction processes. A prime example is density-assisted tunneling, by which the hopping amplitude of a particle between neighboring sites explicitly depends on their respective occupations. Here, we show how density-assisted tunneling can be tailored in view of simulating the effects of strain in synthetic graphene-type systems. Specifically, we consider a mixture of two atomic species on a honeycomb optical lattice: one species forms a Bose-Einstein condensate in an anisotropic harmonic trap, whose inhomogeneous density profile induces an effective uniaxial strain for the second species through density-assisted tunneling processes. In direct analogy with strained graphene, the second species experiences a pseudo magnetic field, hence exhibiting relativistic Landau levels and the valley Hall effect. Our proposed scheme introduces a unique platform for the investigation of strain-induced gauge fields and their possible interplay with quantum fluctuations and collective excitations., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

Bloch oscillations (BOs) are a fundamental phenomenon by which a wave packet undergoes a periodic motion in a lattice when subjected to an external force. Observed in a wide range of synthetic lattice systems, BOs are intrinsically related to the geometric and topological properties of the underlying band structure. This has established BOs as a prominent tool for the detection of Berry phase effects, including those described by non-Abelian gauge fields. In this work, we unveil a unique topological effect that manifests in the BOs of higher-order topological insulators through the interplay of non-Abelian Berry curvature and quantized Wilson loops. It is characterized by an oscillating Hall drift that is synchronized with a topologically-protected inter-band beating and a multiplied Bloch period. We elucidate that the origin of this synchronization mechanism relies on the periodic quantum dynamics of Wannier centers. Our work paves the way to the experimental detection of non-Abelian topological properties in synthetic matter through the measurement of Berry phases and center-of-mass displacements., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Coherent control via periodic modulation, also known as Floquet engineering, has emerged as a powerful experimental method for the realization of novel quantum systems with exotic properties. In particular, it has been employed to study topological phenomena in a variety of different platforms. In driven systems, the topological properties of the quasienergy bands can often be determined by standard topological invariants, such as Chern numbers, which are commonly used in static systems. However, due to the periodic nature of the quasienergy spectrum, this topological description is incomplete and new invariants are required to fully capture the topological properties of these driven settings. Most prominently, there exist two-dimensional anomalous Floquet systems that exhibit robust chiral edge modes, despite all Chern numbers are equal to zero. Here, we realize such a system with bosonic atoms in a periodically-driven honeycomb lattice and infer the complete set of topological invariants from energy gap measurements and local Hall deflections.

Bound states of two interacting particles moving on a lattice can exhibit remarkable features that are not captured by the underlying single-particle picture. Inspired by this phenomenon, we introduce a novel framework by which genuine interaction-induced geometric and topological effects can be realized in quantum-engineered systems. Our approach builds on the design of effective lattices for the center-of-mass motion of two-body bound states (\emph{doublons}), which can be created through long-range interactions. This general scenario is illustrated on several examples, where flat-band localization, topological pumps and higher-order topological corner modes emerge from genuine interaction effects. We study the vibrational spectrum of the protonated water dimer, by means of a divide-and-conquer semiclassical initial value representation of the quantum propagator, as a first step in the study of larger protonated water clusters. We use the potential energy surface from [Huang et al., J. Chem. Phys. 122, 044308 (2005)]. To tackle such an anharmonic and floppy molecule, we employ fully Cartesian dynamics and carefully reduce the coupling to global rotations in the definition of normal modes. We apply the time-averaging filter and obtain clean power spectra relative to suitable reference states, that highlight the spectral peaks corresponding to the fundamental excitations of the system. Our trajectory-based approach allows us for physical interpretation of the very challenging proton transfer modes. We find that it is important, for such a floppy molecule, to selectively avoid to initially excite lower energy modes, in order to obtain cleaner spectra. The estimated vibrational energies display a mean absolute error (MAE) of $\sim29\text{cm}^{-1}$ with respect to available Multi-Configuration time-dependent Hartree calculations and $\text{MAE}\sim14\text{cm}^{-1}$ when compared to the optically active experimental excitations of the Ne-tagged Zundel cation. The reasonable scaling in the number of trajectories for Monte Carlo convergence is promising for applications to higher dimensional protonated cluster systems., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, submitted to the Journal of Chemical Physics

In this work we report a computational study of the vibrational features of four different nucleobases employing the divide-and-conquer semiclassical initial value representation molecular dynamics method. Calculations are performed on uracil, cytosine, thymine, and adenine. Results show that the overall accuracy with respect to experiments is within 20 wavenumbers, regardless of the dimensionality of the nucleobase. Vibrational estimates are accurate even in the complex case of cytosine, where two relevant conformers are taken into account. These results are promising in the perspective of future studies on more complex systems, such as nucleotides or nucleobase pairs.

The role of vibrational excitation of reactants in driving reactions involving polyatomic species has been often studied by means of classical or quasi-classical trajectory simulations. We propose a different approach based on investigation of vibrational features of the Cl$^-$--CH$_3$Cl pre-reaction complex for the Cl$^-$ + CH$_3$Cl SN$_2$ reaction. We present vibrational power spectra and frequency estimates for the title pre-reaction complex calculated at the level of classical, semiclassical, and second-order vibrational perturbation theory on a pre-existing analytical potential energy surface. The main goals of the paper are the study of anharmonic effects and understanding of vibrational couplings that permit energy transfer between the collisional kinetic energy and the internal vibrations of the reactants. We provide both classical and quantum pictures of intermode couplings and show that the SN2 mechanism is favored by the coupling of a C--Cl bend involving the Cl$^-$ projectile with the CH$_3$ rocking motion of the target molecule. We also illustrate how the routines needed for semiclassical vibrational spectroscopy simulations can be interfaced in a user-friendly way to pre-existing molecular dynamics software. In particular, we present an implementation of semiclassical spectroscopy into the VENUS suite of codes, thus providing a useful computational tool for users who are not experts of semiclassical dynamics.

The interplay of $\pi$-flux and lattice geometry can yield full localization of quantum dynamics in lattice systems, a striking interference phenomenon known as Aharonov-Bohm caging. At the level of the single-particle energy spectrum, this full-localization effect is attributed to the collapse of Bloch bands into a set of perfectly flat (dispersionless) bands. In such lattice models, the effects of inter-particle interactions generally lead to a breaking of the cages, and hence, to the spreading of the wavefunction over the lattice. Motivated by recent experimental realizations of analog Aharonov-Bohm cages for light, using coupled-waveguide arrays, we hereby demonstrate that caging always occurs in the presence of local nonlinearities. As a central result, we focus on special caged solutions, which are accompanied by a breathing motion of the field intensity, that we describe in terms of an effective two-mode model reminiscent of a bosonic Josephson junction. Moreover, we explore the quantum regime using small particle ensembles, and we observe quasi-caged collapse-revival dynamics with negligible leakage. We present a strategy based on two-dimensional arrays of coupled linear optical resonators to investigate the two-body physics of interacting bosons in one-dimensional lattices. In particular, we want to address the bound pairs in topologically non-trivial Su-Schrieffer-Heeger arrays. Taking advantage of the driven-dissipative nature of the resonators, we propose spectroscopic protocols to detect and tomographically characterize bulk doublon bands and doublon edge states from the spatially-resolved transmission spectra, and to highlight Feshbach resonance effects in two-body collision processes. We discuss the experimental feasibility using state-of-the-art devices, with a specific eye on arrays of semiconductor micropillar cavities., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We report on the experimental realization of a uniform synthetic magnetic flux and the observation of Aharonov-Bohm cages in photonic lattices. Considering a rhombic array of optical waveguides, we engineer modulation-assisted tunneling processes that effectively produce non-zero magnetic flux per plaquette. This synthetic magnetic field for light can be tuned at will by varying the phase of the modulation. In the regime where half a flux quantum is realized in each plaquette, all the energy bands dramatically collapse into non-dispersive (flat) bands and all eigenstates are completely localized. We demonstrate this Aharonov-Bohm caging by studying the propagation of light in the bulk of the photonic lattice. Besides, we explore the dynamics on the edge of the lattice and discuss how the corresponding edge states can be continuously connected to the topological edge states of the Creutz ladder. We present an investigation of vibrational features in water clusters performed by means of our recently established divide-and-conquer semiclassical approach [M. Ceotto, G. Di Liberto, and R. Conte, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 010401 (2017)]. This technique allows us to simulate quantum vibrational spectra of high-dimensional systems starting from full-dimensional classical trajectories and projection of the semiclassical propagator onto a set of lower dimensional subspaces. The potential energy surface employed is a many-body representation up to three-body terms, in which monomers and two-body interactions are described by the high level Wang-Huang-Braams-Bowman (WHBB) water potential, while, for three-body interactions, calculations adopt a fast permutationally invariant ab initio surface at the same level of theory of the WHBB 3-body potential. Applications range from the water dimer up to the water decamer, a system made of 84 vibrational degrees of freedom. Results are generally in agreement with previous variational estimates in the literature. This is particularly true for the bending and the high-frequency stretching motions, while estimates of modes strongly influenced by hydrogen bonding are red shifted, in a few instances even substantially, as a consequence of the dynamical and global picture provided by the semiclassical approach.

We extensively describe our recently established "divide-and-conquer" semiclassical method [M. Ceotto, G. Di Liberto and R. Conte, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 010401 (2017)] and propose a new implementation of it to increase the accuracy of results. The technique permits to perform spectroscopic calculations of high dimensional systems by dividing the full-dimensional problem into a set of smaller dimensional ones. The partition procedure, originally based on a dynamical analysis of the Hessian matrix, is here more rigorously achieved through a hierarchical subspace-separation criterion based on Liouville's theorem. Comparisons of calculated vibrational frequencies to exact quantum ones for a set of molecules including benzene show that the new implementation performs better than the original one and that, on average, the loss in accuracy with respect to full-dimensional semiclassical calculations is reduced to only 10 wavenumbers. Furthermore, by investigating the challenging Zundel cation, we also demonstrate that the "divide-and-conquer" approach allows to deal with complex strongly anharmonic molecular systems. Overall the method very much helps the assignment and physical interpretation of experimental IR spectra by providing accurate vibrational fundamentals and overtones decomposed into reduced dimensionality spectra.

Both mixtures of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and systems with atoms trapped in optical lattices have been intensely explored theoretically, mainly due to the exceptional developments on the experimental side. We investigate the properties of ultracold atomic impurities (bosons) immersed in a vortex lattice of a second Bose-condensed species. In contrast to the static optical-lattice configuration, the vortex lattice presents intrinsic dynamics given by its Tkachenko modes. These excitations induce additional correlations between the impurities, which consist in a long-range attractive potential and in a density-dependent hopping, described here in the framework of an extended Bose-Hubbard model. We compute the quantum phase diagram of the impurity species through a Gutzwiller ansatz and through the mean-field approach, and separately identify the effects of the two additional terms, i.e., the shift and the deformation of the Mott insulator lobes. The long-range attraction, in particular, induces the existence of a triple point in the phase diagram, in agreement with previous quantum Monte Carlo calculations [Chaviguri \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{95}, 053639 (2017)]., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We study the topological properties of the two-body bound states in an interacting Haldane model as a function of interparticle interactions. In particular, we identify topological phases where the two-body edge states have either the same or the opposite chirality as compared to single-particle edge states. We highlight that in the moderately interacting regime, which is relevant for the experimental realization with ultracold atoms, the topological transition is affected by the internal structure of the bound state, and the phase boundaries are consequently deformed.

We study the low-energy excitations of the Bose-Hubbard model in the strongly-interacting superfluid phase using a Gutzwiller approach and extract the single-particle and single-hole excitation amplitudes for each mode. We report emergent mode-dependent particle-hole symmetry on specific arc-shaped lines in the phase diagram connecting the well-known Lorentz-invariant limits of the Bose-Hubbard model. By tracking the in-phase particle-hole symmetric oscillations of the order parameter, we provide an answer to the long-standing question about the fate of the pure amplitude Higgs mode away from the integer-density critical point. Furthermore, we point out that out-of-phase oscillations are responsible for a full suppression of the condensate density oscillations of the gapless Goldstone mode. A new semiclassical "divide-and-conquer" method is presented with the aim of demonstrating that quantum dynamics simulations of high dimensional molecular systems are doable. The method is first tested by calculating the quantum vibrational power spectra of water, methane, and benzene - three molecules of increasing dimensionality for which benchmark quantum results are available - and then applied to C60, a system characterized by 174 vibrational degrees of freedom. Results show that the approach can accurately account for quantum anharmonicities, purely quantum features like overtones, and the removal of degeneracy when the molecular symmetry is broken.

We study the bosonic two-body problem in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger dimerized chain with on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions. We find two classes of bound states. The first, similar to the one induced by on-site interactions, has its center of mass on the strong link, whereas the second, existing only thanks to nearest-neighbors interactions, is centered on the weak link. We identify energy crossings between these states and analyse them using exact diagonalization and perturbation theory. In the presence of open boundary conditions, novel strongly-localized edge-bound states appear in the spectrum as a consequence of the interplay between lattice geometry, on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions. This paper deals with the critical issue of approximating the pre-exponential factor in semiclassical molecular dynamics. The pre-exponential factor is important because it accounts for the quantum contribution to the semiclassical propagator of the classical Feynman path fluctuations. Pre-exponential factor approximations are necessary when chaotic or complex systems are simulated. We introduced pre-exponential factor approximations based either on analytical considerations or numerical regularization. The approximations are tested for power spectrum calculations of more and more chaotic model systems and on several molecules, for which exact quantum mechanical values are available. The results show that the pre-exponential factor approximations introduced are accurate enough to be safely employed for semiclassical simulations of complex systems.

We consider two interacting bosons in a dimerized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattice. We identify a rich variety of two-body states. In particular, for open boundary conditions and moderate interactions, edge bound states (EBS) are present even for the dimerization that does not sustain single-particle edge states. Moreover, for large values of the interactions, we find a breaking of the standard bulk-boundary correspondence. Based on the mapping of two interacting particles in one dimension onto a single particle in two dimensions, we propose an experimentally realistic coupled optical fibers setup as quantum simulator of the two-body SSH model. This setup is able to highlight the localization properties of the states as well as the presence of a resonant scattering mechanism provided by a bound state that crosses the scattering continuum, revealing the closed-channel population in real time and real space., Comment: 14 pages; 14 figures

Topological states of matter are peculiar quantum phases showing different edge and bulk transport properties connected by the bulk-boundary correspondence. While non-interacting fermionic topological insulators are well established by now and have been classified according to a ten-fold scheme, the possible realisation of topological states for bosons has not been much explored yet. Furthermore, the role of interactions is far from being understood. Here, we show that a topological state of matter exclusively driven by interactions may occur in the p-band of a Lieb optical lattice filled with ultracold bosons. The single-particle spectrum of the system displays a remarkable parabolic band-touching point, with both bands exhibiting non-negative curvature. Although the system is neither topological at the single-particle level, nor for the interacting ground state, on-site interactions induce an anomalous Hall effect for the excitations, carrying a non-zero Chern number. The control of transport properties is a key tool at the basis of many technologically relevant effects in condensed matter. The clean and precisely controlled environment of ultracold atoms in optical lattices allows one to prepare simplified but instructive models, which can help to better understand the underlying physical mechanisms. Here we show that by tuning a structural deformation of the unit cell in a bipartite optical lattice, one can induce a phase transition from a superfluid into various Mott insulating phases forming a shell structure in the superimposed harmonic trap. The Mott shells are identified via characteristic features in the visibility of Bragg maxima in momentum spectra. The experimental findings are explained by Gutzwiller mean-field and quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Our system bears similarities with the loss of coherence in cuprate superconductors, known to be associated with the doping induced buckling of the oxygen octahedra surrounding the copper sites., Comment: 6+10 pages, 16 figures

We describe the behavior of a system of fermionic atoms loaded in a bipartite one-dimensional optical lattice that is under the action of an external time-periodic driving force. By using Floquet theory, an effective model with renormalized hopping coefficients is derived. The insulating behavior characterizing the system at half-filling in the absence of driving is dynamically suppressed and for particular values of the driving parameter the system becomes either a standard metal or an unconventional metal with four Fermi points. We use the bosonization technique to investigate the effect of on-site Hubbard interactions on the four Fermi-point metal-insulator phase transition. Attractive interactions are expected to enlarge the regime of parameters where the unconventional metallic phase arises, whereas repulsive interactions reduce it. This metallic phase is known to be a Luther-Emery liquid (spin gapped metal) for both, repulsive and attractive interactions, contrarily to the usual Hubbard model which exhibits a Mott insulator phase for repulsive interactions. Ultracold fermions in driven one-dimensional bipartite optical lattices provide an interesting platform for the realization of this long studied four Fermi-point unconventional metal., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

By using a modulated magnetic field in a Feshbach resonance for ultracold fermionic atoms in optical lattices, we show that it is possible to engineer a class of models usually referred to as correlated-hopping models. These models differ from the Hubbard model in exhibiting additional density-dependent interaction terms that affect the hopping processes. In addition to the spin-SU(2) symmetry, they also possess a charge-SU(2) symmetry, which opens the possibility of investigating the $\eta$-pairing mechanism for superconductivity introduced by Yang for the Hubbard model. We discuss the known solution of the model in 1D (where $\eta$ states have been found in the degenerate manifold of the ground state) and show that, away from the integrable point, quantum Monte Carlo simulations at half filling predict the emergence of a phase with coexisting incommensurate spin and charge order., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Complete tree search is a highly effective method for tackling MIP problems, and over the years, a plethora of branching heuristics have been introduced to further refine the technique for varying problems. Recently, portfolio algorithms have taken the process a step further, trying to predict the best heuristic for each instance at hand. However, the motivation behind algorithm selection can be taken further still, and used to dynamically choose the most appropriate algorithm for each encountered subproblem. In this paper we identify a feature space that captures both the evolution of the problem in the branching tree and the similarity among subproblems of instances from the same MIP models. We show how to exploit these features to decide the best time to switch the branching heuristic and then show how such a system can be trained efficiently. Experiments on a highly heterogeneous collection of MIP instances show significant gains over the pure algorithm selection approach that for a given instance uses only a single heuristic throughout the search.

We consider ultracold bosons in a 2D square optical lattice described by the Bose-Hubbard model. In addition, an external time-dependent sinusoidal force is applied to the system, which shakes the lattice along one of the diagonals. The effect of the shaking is to renormalize the nearest-neighbor hopping coefficients, which can be arbitrarily reduced, can vanish, or can even change sign, depending on the shaking parameter. It is therefore necessary to account for higher-order hopping terms, which are renormalized differently by the shaking, and introduce anisotropy into the problem. We show that the competition between these different hopping terms leads to finite-momentum condensates, with a momentum that may be tuned via the strength of the shaking. We calculate the boundaries between the Mott-insulator and the different superfluid phases, and present the time-of-flight images expected to be observed experimentally. Our results open up new possibilities for the realization of bosonic analogs of the FFLO phase describing inhomogeneous superconductivity., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

The fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) is very general and applies to a broad variety of different physical phenomena in condensed matter physics. With the help of the FDT and following the famous work of Caldeira and Leggett, we show that, whenever linear response theory applies, any generic bosonic or fermionic system at finite temperature $T$ can be mapped onto a fictitious system of free harmonic oscillators. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such a mapping is explicitly worked out. This finding provides further theoretical support to the phenomenological harmonic oscillator models commonly used in condensed matter. Moreover, our result helps in clarifying an interpretation issue related to the presence and physical origin of the Bose-Einstein factor in the FDT., Comment: 12 pages, no figures

It has been recently claimed that dark energy can be (and has been) observed in laboratory experiments by measuring the power spectrum $S_I(\omega)$ of the noise current in a resistively shunted Josephson junction and that in new dedicated experiments, which will soon test a higher frequency range, $S_I(\omega)$ should show a deviation from the linear rising observed in the lower frequency region because higher frequencies should not contribute to dark energy. Based on previous work on theoretical aspects of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we carefully investigate these issues and show that these claims are based on a misunderstanding of the physical origin of the spectral function $S_I(\omega)$. According to our analysis, dark energy has never been (and will never be) observed in Josephson junctions experiments. We also predict that no deviation from the linear rising behavior of $S_I(\omega)$ will be observed in forthcoming experiments. The question of the "physical meaning" and "origin" of the Bose-Einstein (BE) factor in the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) is often raised and this term is sometimes interpreted as originating from a real harmonic oscillator composition of the physical system. Such an interpretation, however, is not really founded. Inspired by the famous work of Caldeira and Leggett, we have been able to show that, whenever linear response theory is applicable, which is the main hypothesis under which the FDT is established, any generic bosonic and/or fermionic system at temperature $T$ can be mapped onto a fictitious system of harmonic oscillators so that the suscettivity and the mean square of the fluctuating observable of the real system coincide with the corresponding quantities of the fictitious one. We claim that it is in this sense, and only in this sense, that the BE factor can be interpreted in terms of harmonic oscillators, no other physical meaning can be superimposed to it. The expansions or the compressions of the ideal gas in the quasi-static Carnot cycle, can be performed (on adiabatic or isothermal way) by slowly increasing or decreasing the external pressure by means of small weights acting on the piston of the vessel containing the gas. We call them shortly the ``driving weights'' (dw). Let N be their number, a large one. To determine the work performed by the ideal gas in the cycle the ``driving weights'' must be handled carefully. If we let them move on-off the piston only horizontally, their vertical motions will be due only to the gas. Here we show that, at the end, while some of them will have moved down (will have negative raising) the remaining ones (the majority) will have moved up (will have positive raising) so that the total work performed by the ideal gas equals the total variation of the gravitational potential energy of the ``driving weghts''. The cycle is performed in 2N time-steps. For each step t_i, with i in 1,..,2N, we give H(t_i), and DH(t_{i-1},t_i), respectively the height and the raising of the piston. Moreover the overall raising of the individual dw's (i.e. h_k, with k in 1...N), and their distribution are given in simple, general cases. The efficiency and the dissipated work are also evaluated. This paper is aimed at imparting a deeper understanding of the ideal Carnot Engine and may also be useful as a segment in a didactic path on elementary calculus and statistics.

We present a mean field analysis of a fully frustrated Ising spin model on an Ising lattice gas. This is equivalent to a degenerate Blume-Emery-Griffiths model with frustration, which we analyze for different values of the quadrupolar interaction. This model might be useful in the study of structural glasses and related systems with disorder.
