Red Giant stars host solar-like oscillations which have mixed character, being sensitive to conditions both in the outer convection zone and deep within the interior. The properties of these modes are sensitive to both core rotation and magnetic fields. While asteroseismic studies of the former have been done on a large scale, studies of the latter are currently limited to tens of stars. We aim to produce the first large catalogue of both magnetic and rotational perturbations. We jointly constrain these parameters by devising an automated method for fitting the power spectra directly. We successfully apply the method to 302 low-luminosity red giants. We find a clear bimodality in core rotation rate. The primary peak is at $\delta \nu_{\mathrm{rot}}$ = 0.32 $\mu$Hz, and the secondary at $\delta \nu_{\mathrm{rot}}$ = 0.47 $\mu$Hz. Combining our results with literature values, we find that the percentage of stars rotating much more rapidly than the population average increases with evolutionary state. We measure magnetic splittings of 2$\sigma$ significance in 23 stars. While the most extreme magnetic splitting values appear in stars with masses > 1.1M$_{\odot}$, implying they formerly hosted a convective core, a small but statistically significant magnetic splitting is measured at lower masses. Asymmetry between the frequencies of a rotationally split multiplet has previously been used to diagnose the presence of a magnetic perturbation. We find that of the stars with a significant detection of magnetic perturbation, 43\% do not show strong asymmetry. The upcoming second release of PBJam -- a software instrument for fitting normal modes ("peakbagging") -- supplements the simple power-spectrum model used in the first version to additionally constrain other features. Dipole ($\ell = 1$) modes, which had been excluded in the initial version of the tool, are now specifically included. The primary samples of the PLATO mission consist mainly of main-sequence and subgiant stars, so PBjam implements a single parameterisation of dipole mixed-mode frequencies that reduces to pure p-modes in the former, and is suitable for use with the latter, outside the red-giant "asymptotic" regime. In keeping with the overall philosophy of PBjam's design, PBjam 2 will specify prior distributions on these parameters empirically, through predetermined values found for existing samples of solar-like oscillators. While the red-giant asymptotic regime has been extensively characterised observationally, the nonasymptotic construction for subgiants here has not, requiring us to construct this prior sample ourselves. To assist in this task, we built a tool -- Reggae -- to manually fine-tune and fit the dipole-mode model, and check the quality of both our initial guesses and fitted solutions. We have found it very helpful both for these tuning and visualisation tasks, and also as a didactic aid to understanding the dipole mixed-mode parameters. Moreover, no other tools currently exist for performing these tasks in the nonasymptotic parameterisation considered here. As such, we release Reggae publicly in advance of this update to PBjam, as we believe the community will benefit from access to such a visualisation tool. This will also assist future users of PBjam in devising ad-hoc prior constraints on the mixed-mode parameters, should they wish to perform mode identification for anomalous stars., Comment: published in JOSS. The KEYSTONE project aims to enhance our understanding of solar-like oscillators by delivering a catalogue of global asteroseismic parameters (${\Delta\nu}$ and ${\nu_{\rm max}}$) for 173 stars, comprising mainly dwarfs and subgiants, observed by the K2 mission in its short-cadence mode during campaigns 6-19. We derive atmospheric parameters and luminosities using spectroscopic data from TRES, astrometric data from $\textit{Gaia}$, and the infrared flux method (IRFM) for a comprehensive stellar characterisation. Asteroseismic parameters are robustly extracted using three independent methods, complemented by an iterative refinement of the spectroscopic analyses using seismic ${\log g}$ values to enhance parameter accuracy. Our analysis identifies new detections of solar-like oscillations in 159 stars, providing an important complement to already published results from previous campaigns. The catalogue provides homogeneously derived atmospheric parameters and luminosities for the majority of the sample. Comparison between spectroscopic ${T_{\rm eff}}$ and those obtained from the IRFM demonstrates excellent agreement. Despite a growing sample of precisely measured stellar rotation periods and ages, the strength of magnetic braking and the degree of departure from standard (Skumanich-like) spindown have remained persistent questions, particularly for stars more evolved than the Sun. Rotation periods can be measured for stars older than the Sun by leveraging asteroseismology, enabling models to be tested against a larger sample of old field stars. Because asteroseismic measurements of rotation do not depend on starspot modulation, they avoid potential biases introduced by the need for a stellar dynamo to drive starspot production. Using a neural network trained on a grid of stellar evolution models and a hierarchical model-fitting approach, we constrain the onset of weakened magnetic braking. We find that a sample of stars with asteroseismically-measured rotation periods and ages is consistent with models that depart from standard spindown prior to reaching the evolutionary stage of the Sun. We test our approach using neural networks trained on model grids produced by separate stellar evolution codes with differing physical assumptions and find that the choices of grid physics can influence the inferred properties of the braking law. We identify the normalized critical Rossby number ${\rm Ro}_{\rm crit}/{\rm Ro}_\odot = 0.91\pm0.03$ as the threshold for the departure from standard rotational evolution. This suggests that weakened magnetic braking poses challenges to gyrochronology for roughly half of the main sequence lifetime of sun-like stars., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures

The detailed modelling of stellar oscillations is a powerful approach to characterising stars. However, poor treatment of systematics in theoretical models leads to misinterpretations of stars. Here we propose a more principled statistical treatment for the systematics to be applied to fitting individual mode frequencies with a typical stellar model grid. We introduce a correlated noise model based on a Gaussian Process (GP) kernel to describe the systematics given that mode frequency systematics are expected to be highly correlated. We show that tuning the GP kernel can reproduce general features of frequency variations for changing model input physics and fundamental parameters. Fits with the correlated noise model better recover stellar parameters than traditional methods which either ignore the systematics or treat them as uncorrelated noise., Comment: 11 pages

Young $\delta$ Scuti stars have proven to be valuable asteroseismic targets but obtaining robust uncertainties on their inferred properties is challenging. We aim to quantify the random uncertainties in grid-based modelling of $\delta$ Sct stars. We apply Bayesian inference using nested sampling and a neural network emulator of stellar models, testing our method on both simulated and real stars. Based on results from simulated stars we demonstrate that our method can recover plausible posterior probability density estimates while accounting for both the random uncertainty from the observations and neural network emulation. We find that the posterior distributions of the fundamental parameters can be significantly non-Gaussian, multi-modal, and have strong covariance. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission has provided photometric light curves for stars across nearly the entire sky. This allows for the application of asteroseismology to a pool of potential solar-like oscillators that is unprecedented in size. We aim to produce a catalogue of solar-like oscillators observed by TESS in the 120-second and 20-second cadence modes. The catalogue is intended to highlight stars oscillating at frequencies above the TESS 30-minute cadence Nyquist frequency with the purpose of encompassing the main sequence and subgiant evolutionary phases. We aim to provide estimates for the global asteroseismic parameters $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\Delta\nu$. We apply a new probabilistic detection algorithm to the 120-second and 20-second light curves of over 250,000 stars. This algorithm flags targets that show characteristic signatures of solar-like oscillations. We manually vet the resulting list of targets to confirm the presence of solar-like oscillations. Using the probability densities computed by the algorithm, we measure the global asteroseismic parameters $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\Delta\nu$. We produce a catalogue of 4,177 solar-like oscillators, reporting $\Delta\nu$ and $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ for $98\%$ of the total star count. The asteroseismic data reveals vast coverage of the HR diagram, populating the red giant branch, the subgiant regime and extending toward the main sequence. A crossmatch with external catalogs shows that 25 of the detected solar-like oscillators are a component of a spectroscopic binary, and 28 are confirmed planet host stars. Grid-based modelling is widely used for estimating stellar parameters. However, stellar model grid is sparse because of the computational cost. This paper demonstrates an application of a machine-learning algorithm using the Gaussian Process (GP) Regression that turns a sparse model grid onto a continuous function. We train GP models to map five fundamental inputs (mass, equivalent evolutionary phase, initial metallicity, initial helium fraction, and the mixing-length parameter) to observable outputs (effective temperature, surface gravity, radius, surface metallicity, and stellar age). We test the GP predictions for the five outputs using off-grid stellar models and find no obvious systematic offsets, indicating good accuracy in predictions.As a further validation, we apply these GP models to characterise 1,000 fake stars. Inferred masses and ages determined with GP models well recover true values within one standard deviation. The Milky Way was shaped by the mergers with several galaxies in the past. We search for remnant stars that were born in these foreign galaxies and assess their ages in an effort to put upper limits on the merger times and thereby better understand the evolutionary history of our Galaxy. Using 6D-phase space information from Gaia eDR3 and chemical information from APOGEE DR16, we kinematically and chemically select $23$ red giant stars belonging to former dwarf galaxies that merged with the Milky Way. With added asteroseismology from Kepler and K2, we determine the ages of the $23$ ex-situ stars and $55$ in-situ stars with great precision. We find that all the ex-situ stars are consistent with being older than $8$ Gyr. While it is not possible to associate all the stars with a specific dwarf galaxy we classify eight of them as Gaia-Enceladus/Sausage stars, which is one of the most massive mergers in our Galaxy's history. We determine their mean age to be $9.5^{+1.2}_{-1.3}$ Gyr consistent with a merger time of $8$-$10$ Gyr ago. The rest of the stars are possibly associated with Kraken, Thamnos, Sequoia, or another extragalactic progenitor. We present the third and final data release of the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program (K2 GAP) for Campaigns C1-C8 and C10-C18. We provide asteroseismic radius and mass coefficients, $\kappa_R$ and $\kappa_M$, for $\sim 19,000$ red giant stars, which translate directly to radius and mass given a temperature. As such, K2 GAP DR3 represents the largest asteroseismic sample in the literature to date. K2 GAP DR3 stellar parameters are calibrated to be on an absolute parallactic scale based on Gaia DR2, with red giant branch and red clump evolutionary state classifications provided via a machine-learning approach. Combining these stellar parameters with GALAH DR3 spectroscopy, we determine asteroseismic ages with precisions of $\sim 20-30\%$ and compare age-abundance relations to Galactic chemical evolution models among both low- and high-$\alpha$ populations for $\alpha$, light, iron-peak, and neutron-capture elements. We confirm recent indications in the literature of both increased Ba production at late Galactic times, as well as significant contribution to r-process enrichment from prompt sources associated with, e.g., core-collapse supernovae. With an eye toward other Galactic archaeology applications, we characterize K2 GAP DR3 uncertainties and completeness using injection tests, suggesting K2 GAP DR3 is largely unbiased in mass/age and with uncertainties of $2.9\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.1\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ & $6.7\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.3\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ in $\kappa_R$ & $\kappa_M$ for red giant branch stars and $4.7\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.3\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ & $11\%\,(\rm{stat.})\,\pm0.9\%\,(\rm{syst.})$ for red clump stars. With recent advances in modelling stars using high-precision asteroseismology, the systematic effects associated with our assumptions of stellar helium abundance ($Y$) and the mixing-length theory parameter ($\alpha_\mathrm{MLT}$) are becoming more important. We apply a new method to improve the inference of stellar parameters for a sample of Kepler dwarfs and subgiants across a narrow mass range ($0.8 < M < 1.2\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$). In this method, we include a statistical treatment of $Y$ and the $\alpha_\mathrm{MLT}$. We develop a hierarchical Bayesian model to encode information about the distribution of $Y$ and $\alpha_\mathrm{MLT}$ in the population, fitting a linear helium enrichment law including an intrinsic spread around this relation and normal distribution in $\alpha_\mathrm{MLT}$. We test various levels of pooling parameters, with and without solar data as a calibrator. When including the Sun as a star, we find the gradient for the enrichment law, $\Delta Y / \Delta Z = 1.05^{+0.28}_{-0.25}$ and the mean $\alpha_\mathrm{MLT}$ in the population, $\mu_\alpha = 1.90^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$. While accounting for the uncertainty in $Y$ and $\alpha_\mathrm{MLT}$, we are still able to report statistical uncertainties of 2.5 per cent in mass, 1.2 per cent in radius, and 12 per cent in age. Studies using asteroseismic ages and rotation rates from star-spot rotation have indicated that standard age-rotation relations may break down roughly half-way through the main sequence lifetime, a phenomenon referred to as weakened magnetic braking. While rotation rates from spots can be difficult to determine for older, less active stars, rotational splitting of asteroseismic oscillation frequencies can provide rotation rates for both active and quiescent stars, and so can confirm whether this effect really takes place on the main sequence. We obtained asteroseismic rotation rates of 91 main sequence stars showing high signal-to-noise modes of oscillation. Using these new rotation rates, along with effective temperatures, metallicities and seismic masses and ages, we built a hierarchical Bayesian mixture model to determine whether the ensemble more closely agreed with a standard rotational evolution scenario, or one where weakened magnetic braking takes place. The weakened magnetic braking scenario was found to be 98.4% more likely for our stellar ensemble, adding to the growing body of evidence for this stage of stellar rotational evolution. We have used very high-cadence (sub-minute) observations of the solar mean magnetic field (SMMF) from the Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network (BiSON) to investigate the morphology of the SMMF. The observations span a period from 1992--2012, and the high-cadence observations allowed the exploration of the power spectrum up to frequencies in the mHz range. The power spectrum contains several broad peaks from a rotationally-modulated (RM) component, whose linewidths allowed us to measure, for the first time, the lifetime of the RM source. There is an additional broadband, background component in the power spectrum which we have shown is an artefact of power aliasing due to the low fill of the data. The sidereal rotation period of the RM component was measured as $25.23 \pm 0.11$ days and suggests that the signal is sensitive to a time-averaged latitude of $\sim 12^{\circ}$. We have also shown the RM lifetime to be $139.6 \pm 18.5$ days. Studies of Galactic structure and evolution have benefitted enormously from Gaia kinematic information, though additional, intrinsic stellar parameters like age are required to best constrain Galactic models. Asteroseismology is the most precise method of providing such information for field star populations $\textit{en masse}$, but existing samples for the most part have been limited to a few narrow fields of view by the CoRoT and Kepler missions. In an effort to provide well-characterized stellar parameters across a wide range in Galactic position, we present the second data release of red giant asteroseismic parameters for the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program (GAP). We provide $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\Delta \nu$ based on six independent pipeline analyses; first-ascent red giant branch (RGB) and red clump (RC) evolutionary state classifications from machine learning; and ready-to-use radius & mass coefficients, $\kappa_R$ & $\kappa_M$, which, when appropriately multiplied by a solar-scaled effective temperature factor, yield physical stellar radii and masses. In total, we report 4395 radius and mass coefficients, with typical uncertainties of $3.3\% \mathrm{\ (stat.)} \pm 1\% \mathrm{\ (syst.)}$ for $\kappa_R$ and $7.7\% \mathrm{\ (stat.)} \pm 2\% \mathrm{\ (syst.)}$ for $\kappa_M$ among RGB stars, and $5.0\% \mathrm{\ (stat.)} \pm 1\% \mathrm{\ (syst.)}$ for $\kappa_R$ and $10.5\% \mathrm{\ (stat.)} \pm 2\% \mathrm{\ (syst.)}$ for $\kappa_M$ among RC stars. We verify that the sample is nearly complete -- except for a dearth of stars with $\nu_{\mathrm{max}} \lesssim 10-20\mu$Hz -- by comparing to Galactic models and visual inspection. Our asteroseismic radii agree with radii derived from Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes to within $2.2 \pm 0.3\%$ for RGB stars and $2.0 \pm 0.6\%$ for RC stars., Comment: Published in ApJS

Planet-planet scattering events can leave an observable trace of a planet's migration history in the form of orbital misalignment with respect to the the stellar spin axis, which is measurable from spectroscopic timeseries taken during transit. We present high-resolution spectroscopic transits observed with ESPRESSO of the close-in super-Earth $\pi$ Men c. The system also contains an outer giant planet on a wide, eccentric orbit, recently found to be inclined with respect to the inner planetary orbit. These characteristics are reminiscent of past dynamical interactions. We successfully retrieve the planet-occulted light during transit and find evidence that the orbit of $\pi$ Men c is moderately misaligned with the stellar spin axis with $\lambda = -24.0^\circ \pm 4.1^\circ$ ($\psi = 26.9^{\circ +5.8^\circ}_{\,-4.7^\circ}$). This is consistent with the super-Earth $\pi$ Men c having followed a high-eccentricity migration followed by tidal circularisation, and hints that super-Earths can form at large distances from their star. We also detect clear signatures of solar-like oscillations within our ESPRESSO radial velocity timeseries, where we reach a radial velocity precision of ${\sim}20$ cm/s. We model the oscillations using Gaussian processes and retrieve a frequency of maximum oscillation, $\nu_\text{max} = 2771^{+65}_{-60}$ $\mu$Hz. These oscillations makes it challenging to detect the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect using traditional methods. We are, however, successful using the reloaded Rossiter-McLaughlin approach. The standard cosmological model ($\Lambda$-CDM) predicts that galaxies are built through hierarchical assembly on cosmological timescales$^{1,2}$. The Milky Way, like other disc galaxies, underwent violent mergers and accretion of small satellite galaxies in its early history. Thanks to Gaia-DR2$^3$ and spectroscopic surveys$^4$, the stellar remnants of such mergers have been identified$^{5-7}$. The chronological dating of such events is crucial to uncover the formation and evolution of the Galaxy at high redshift, but it has so far been challenging owing to difficulties in obtaining precise ages for these oldest stars. Here we combine asteroseismology -- the study of stellar oscillations -- with kinematics and chemical abundances, to estimate precise stellar ages ($\sim$ 11%) for a sample of stars observed by the $\mathit{Kepler}$ space mission$^8$. Crucially, this sample includes not only some of the oldest stars that were formed inside the Galaxy, but also stars formed externally and subsequently accreted onto the Milky Way. Leveraging this resolution in age, we provide compelling evidence in favour of models in which the Galaxy had already formed a substantial population of its stars (which now reside mainly in its thick disc) before the in-fall of the satellite galaxy Gaia-Enceladus/Sausage$^{5,6}$ around 10 billions years ago, Comment: Updated with the final version accepted for publication as a Letter in Nature Astronomy (29 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, including main article and methods section). State-of-the-art stellar structure and evolution codes fail to adequately describe turbulent convection. For stars with convective envelopes, such as red giants, this leads to an incomplete depiction of the surface layers. As a result, the predicted stellar oscillation frequencies are haunted by systematic errors, the so-called surface effect. Different empirically and theoretically motivated correction relations have been proposed to deal with this issue. In this paper, we compare the performance of these surface correction relations for red giant branch stars. For this purpose, we apply the different surface correction relations in asteroseismic analyses of eclipsing binaries and open clusters. In accordance with previous studies of main-sequence stars, we find that the use of different surface correction relations biases the derived global stellar properties, including stellar age, mass, and distance estimates. We furthermore demonstrate that the different relations lead to the same systematic errors for two different open clusters. Our results overall discourage from the use of surface correction relations that rely on reference stars to calibrate free parameters. Due to the demonstrated systematic biasing of the results, the use of appropriate surface correction relations is imperative to any asteroseismic analysis of red giants. Accurate mass, age, and distance estimates for red giants are fundamental when addressing questions that deal with the chemo-dynamical evolution of the Milky Way galaxy. In this way, our results also have implications for fields, such as galactic archaeology, that draw on findings from stellar physics.

Accurate masses and radii for normal stars derived from observations of detached eclipsing binary stars are of fundamental importance for testing stellar models and may be useful for calibrating free parameters in these model if the masses and radii are sufficiently precise and accurate. We aim to measure precise masses and radii for the stars in the bright eclipsing binary AI Phe, and to quantify the level of systematic error in these estimates. We use several different methods to model the TESS light curve of AI Phe combined with spectroscopic orbits from multiple sources to estimate precisely the stellar masses and radii together with robust error estimates. We find that the agreement between different methods for the light curve analysis is very good but some methods underestimate the errors on the model parameters. The semi-amplitudes of the spectroscopic orbits derived from spectra obtained with modern echelle spectrographs are consistent to within 0.1%. The masses of the stars in AI Phe are $M_1 = 1.1938 \pm 0.0008 M_{\odot}$ and $M_2 = 1.2438 \pm 0.0008M_{\odot}$, and the radii are $R_1 = 1.8050 \pm 0.0022 R_{\odot}$ and $R_2 = 2.9332 \pm 0.0023 R_{\odot}$. We conclude that it is possible to measure accurate masses and radii for stars in bright eclipsing binary stars to a precision of 0.2% or better using photometry from TESS and spectroscopy obtained with modern echelle spectrographs. We develop a Bayesian Machine Learning framework called BINGO (Bayesian INference for Galactic archaeOlogy) centred around a Bayesian neural network. After being trained on the APOGEE and \emph{Kepler} asteroseismic age data, BINGO is used to obtain precise relative stellar age estimates with uncertainties for the APOGEE stars. We carefully construct a training set to minimise bias and apply BINGO to a stellar population that is similar to our training set. We then select the 17,305 stars with ages from BINGO and reliable kinematic properties obtained from \textit{Gaia} DR2. By combining the age and chemo-kinematical information, we dissect the Galactic disc stars into three components, namely, the thick disc (old, high-[$\alpha$/Fe], [$\alpha$/Fe] $\gtrsim$ 0.12), the thin disc (young, low-[$\alpha$/Fe]) and the Bridge, which is a region between the thick and thin discs. Our results indicate that the thick disc formed at an early epoch only in the inner region, and the inner disc smoothly transforms to the thin disc. We found that the outer disc follows a different chemical evolution pathway from the inner disc. The outer metal-poor stars only start forming after the compact thick disc phase has completed and the star-forming gas disc extended outwardly with metal-poor gas accretion. We found that in the Bridge region the range of [Fe/H] becomes wider with decreasing age, which suggests that the Bridge region corresponds to the transition phase from the smaller chemically well-mixed thick to a larger thin disc with a metallicity gradient., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted in MNRAS

The frequency, $\nu_{\rm max}$, at which the envelope of pulsation power peaks for solar-like oscillators is an important quantity in asteroseismology. We measure $\nu_{\rm max}$ for the Sun using 25 years of Sun-as-a-Star Doppler velocity observations with the Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON), by fitting a simple model to binned power spectra of the data. We also apply the fit to Sun-as-a-Star Doppler velocity data from GONG and GOLF, and photometry data from VIRGO/SPM on the ESA/NASA SOHO spacecraft. We discover a weak but nevertheless significant positive correlation of the solar $\nu_{\rm max}$ with solar activity. The uncovered shift between low and high activity, of $\simeq 25\,\rm \mu Hz$, translates to an uncertainty of 0.8 per cent in radius and 2.4 per cent in mass, based on direct use of asteroseismic scaling relations calibrated to the Sun. The mean $\nu_{\rm max}$ in the different datasets is also clearly offset in frequency. We report the discovery of a warm sub-Saturn, TOI-257b (HD 19916b), based on data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The transit signal was detected by TESS and confirmed to be of planetary origin based on radial velocity observations. An analysis of the TESS photometry, the Minerva-Australis, FEROS, and HARPS radial velocities, and the asteroseismic data of the stellar oscillations reveals that TOI-257b has a mass of $M_P=0.138\pm0.023$\,$\rm{M_J}$ ($43.9\pm7.3$\,$M_{\rm \oplus}$), a radius of $R_P=0.639\pm0.013$\,$\rm{R_J}$ ($7.16\pm0.15$\,$R_{\rm \oplus}$), bulk density of $0.65^{+0.12}_{-0.11}$ (cgs), and period $18.38818^{+0.00085}_{-0.00084}$\,$\rm{days}$. TOI-257b orbits a bright ($\mathrm{V}=7.612$\,mag) somewhat evolved late F-type star with $M_*=1.390\pm0.046$\,$\rm{M_{\odot}}$, $R_*=1.888\pm0.033$\,$\rm{R_{\odot}}$, $T_{\rm eff}=6075\pm90$\,$\rm{K}$, and $v\sin{i}=11.3\pm0.5$\,km\,s$^{-1}$. Additionally, we find hints for a second non-transiting sub-Saturn mass planet on a $\sim71$\,day orbit using the radial velocity data. This system joins the ranks of a small number of exoplanet host stars ($\sim100$) that have been characterized with asteroseismology. Warm sub-Saturns are rare in the known sample of exoplanets, and thus the discovery of TOI-257b is important in the context of future work studying the formation and migration history of similar planetary systems., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, 6 tables. Over the course of its history, the Milky Way has ingested multiple smaller satellite galaxies. While these accreted stellar populations can be forensically identified as kinematically distinct structures within the Galaxy, it is difficult in general to precisely date the age at which any one merger occurred. Recent results have revealed a population of stars that were accreted via the collision of a dwarf galaxy, called \textit{Gaia}-Enceladus, leading to a substantial pollution of the chemical and dynamical properties of the Milky Way. Here, we identify the very bright, naked-eye star $\nu$\,Indi as a probe of the age of the early in situ population of the Galaxy. We combine asteroseismic, spectroscopic, astrometric, and kinematic observations to show that this metal-poor, alpha-element-rich star was an indigenous member of the halo, and we measure its age to be $11.0 \pm 0.7$ (stat) $\pm 0.8$ (sys)$\,\rm Gyr$. The star bears hallmarks consistent with it having been kinematically heated by the \textit{Gaia}-Enceladus collision. Its age implies that the earliest the merger could have begun was 11.6 and 13.2 Gyr ago at 68 and 95% confidence, respectively. Since the onset of the `space revolution' of high-precision high-cadence photometry, asteroseismology has been demonstrated as a powerful tool for informing Galactic archaeology investigations. The launch of the NASA TESS mission has enabled seismic-based inferences to go full sky -- providing a clear advantage for large ensemble studies of the different Milky Way components. Here we demonstrate its potential for investigating the Galaxy by carrying out the first asteroseismic ensemble study of red giant stars observed by TESS. We use a sample of 25 stars for which we measure their global asteroseimic observables and estimate their fundamental stellar properties, such as radius, mass, and age. Significant improvements are seen in the uncertainties of our estimates when combining seismic observables from TESS with astrometric measurements from the Gaia mission compared to when the seismology and astrometry are applied separately. Specifically, when combined we show that stellar radii can be determined to a precision of a few percent, masses to 5-10% and ages to the 20% level. We revisit the analysis of the bright multiplanet system K2-93, discovered with data taken by the K2 mission. This system contains five identified planets ranging in size from sub-Neptune to Jupiter size. The K2 data available at the discovery of the system only showed single transits for the three outer planets, which allowed weak constraints to be put on their periods. As these planets are interesting candidates for future atmospheric studies, a better characterization of the host star and tighter constraints on their orbital periods are essential. Using new data from the K2 mission taken after the discovery of the system, we perform an asteroseismic characterization of the host star. We are able to place strong constraints on the stellar parameters and obtain a value for the stellar mass of $1.22^{+0.03}_{-0.02}\, \rm M_{\odot}$, a stellar radius of $1.30\pm 0.01\, \rm R_{\odot}$, and an age of $2.07^{+0.36}_{-0.27}$ Gyr. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is performing a near all-sky survey for planets that transit bright stars. In addition, its excellent photometric precision enables asteroseismology of solar-type and red-giant stars, which exhibit convection-driven, solar-like oscillations. Simulations predict that TESS will detect solar-like oscillations in nearly 100 stars already known to host planets. In this paper, we present an asteroseismic analysis of the known red-giant host stars HD 212771 and HD 203949, both systems having a long-period planet detected through radial velocities. These are the first detections of oscillations in previously known exoplanet-host stars by TESS, further showcasing the mission's potential to conduct asteroseismology of red-giant stars. We estimate the fundamental properties of both stars through a grid-based modeling approach that uses global asteroseismic parameters as input. We discuss the evolutionary state of HD 203949 in depth and note the large discrepancy between its asteroseismic mass ($M_\ast = 1.23 \pm 0.15\,{\rm M}_\odot$ if on the red-giant branch or $M_\ast = 1.00 \pm 0.16\,{\rm M}_\odot$ if in the clump) and the mass quoted in the discovery paper ($M_\ast = 2.1 \pm 0.1\,{\rm M}_\odot$), implying a change $>30\,\%$ in the planet's mass. Assuming HD 203949 to be in the clump, we investigate the planet's past orbital evolution and discuss how it could have avoided engulfment at the tip of the red-giant branch. Finally, HD 212771 was observed by K2 during its Campaign 3, thus allowing for a preliminary comparison of the asteroseismic performances of TESS and K2. We estimate the ratio of the observed oscillation amplitudes for this star to be $A_{\rm max}^{\rm TESS}/A_{\rm max}^{\rm K2} = 0.75 \pm 0.14$, consistent with the expected ratio of $\sim0.85$ due to the redder bandpass of TESS., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 17 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

We explore the sensitivity of the frequencies of low-degree solar p-modes to near-surface magnetic flux on different spatial scales and strengths, specifically to active regions with strong magnetic fields and ephemeral regions with weak magnetic fields. We also use model reconstructions from the literature to calculate average frequency offsets back to the end of the Maunder minimum. We find that the p-mode frequencies are at least three times less sensitive (at 95% confidence) to the ephemeral-region field than they are to the active-region field. Frequency shifts between activity cycle minima and maxima are controlled predominantly by the change of active region flux. Frequency shifts at cycle minima (with respect to a magnetically quiet Sun) are determined largely by the ephemeral flux, and are estimated to have been $0.1\,\rm \mu Hz$ or less over the last few minima. We conclude that at epochs of cycle minimum, frequency shifts due to near-surface magnetic activity are negligible compared to the offsets between observed and model frequencies that arise from inaccurate modelling of the near-surface layers (the so-called surface term). The stellar inclination angle-the angle between the rotation axis of a star and our line of sight-provides valuable information in many different areas, from the characterisation of the geometry of exoplanetary and eclipsing binary systems, to the formation and evolution of those systems. We propose a method based on asteroseismology and a Bayesian hierarchical scheme for extracting the inclination angle of a single star. This hierarchical method therefore provides a means to both accurately and robustly extract inclination angles from red giant stars. We successfully apply this technique to an artificial dataset with an underlying isotropic inclination angle distribution to verify the method. We also apply this technique to 123 red giant stars observed with $\textit{Kepler}$. We also show the need for a selection function to account for possible population-level biases, that are not present in individual star-by-star cases, in order to extend the hierarchical method towards inferring underlying population inclination angle distributions., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the first data release of the Kepler Smear Campaign, using collateral 'smear' data obtained in the Kepler four-year mission to reconstruct light curves of 102 stars too bright to have been otherwise targeted. We describe the pipeline developed to extract and calibrate these light curves, and show that we attain photometric precision comparable to stars analyzed by the standard pipeline in the nominal Kepler mission. In this paper, aside from publishing the light curves of these stars, we focus on 66 red giants for which we detect solar-like oscillations, characterizing 33 of these in detail with spectroscopic chemical abundances and asteroseismic masses as benchmark stars. We also classify the whole sample, finding nearly all to be variable, with classical pulsations and binary effects. KOI-3890 is a highly eccentric, 153-day period eclipsing, single-lined spectroscopic binary system containing a red-giant star showing solar-like oscillations alongside tidal interactions. The combination of transit photometry, radial velocity observations, and asteroseismology have enabled the detailed characterisation of both the red-giant primary and the M-dwarf companion, along with the tidal interaction and the geometry of the system. The stellar parameters of the red-giant primary are determined through the use of asteroseismology and grid-based modelling to give a mass and radius of $M_{\star}=1.04\pm0.06\;\textrm{M}_{\odot}$ and $R_{\star}=5.8\pm0.2\;\textrm{R}_{\odot}$ respectively. When combined with transit photometry the M-dwarf companion is found to have a mass and radius of $M_{\mathrm{c}}=0.23\pm0.01\;\textrm{M}_{\odot}$ and $R_{\mathrm{c}}=0.256\pm0.007\;\textrm{R}_{\odot}$. Moreover, through asteroseismology we constrain the age of the system through the red-giant primary to be $9.1^{+2.4}_{-1.7}\;\mathrm{Gyr}$. This provides a constraint on the age of the M-dwarf secondary, which is difficult to do for other M-dwarf binary systems. In addition, the asteroseismic analysis yields an estimate of the inclination angle of the rotation axis of the red-giant star of $i=87.6^{+2.4}_{-1.2}$ degrees. The obliquity of the system\textemdash the angle between the stellar rotation axis and the angle normal to the orbital plane\textemdash is also derived to give $\psi=4.2^{+2.1}_{-4.2}$ degrees showing that the system is consistent with alignment. Asteroseismology provides fundamental stellar parameters independent of distance, but subject to systematics under calibration. Gaia DR2 has provided parallaxes for a billion stars, which are offset by a parallax zero-point. Red Clump (RC) stars have a narrow spread in luminosity, thus functioning as standard candles to calibrate these systematics. This work measures how the magnitude and spread of the RC in the Kepler field are affected by changes to temperature and scaling relations for seismology, and changes to the parallax zero-point for Gaia. We use a sample of 5576 RC stars classified through asteroseismology. We apply hierarchical Bayesian latent variable models, finding the population level properties of the RC with seismology, and use those as priors on Gaia parallaxes to find the parallax zero-point offset. We then find the position of the RC using published values for the zero-point. We find a seismic temperature insensitive spread of the RC of ~0.03 mag in the 2MASS K band and a larger and slightly temperature-dependent spread of ~0.13 mag in the Gaia G band. This intrinsic dispersion in the K band provides a distance precision of ~1% for RC stars. Using Gaia data alone, we find a mean zero-point of -41 $\pm$ 10 $\mu$as. This offset yields RC absolute magnitudes of -1.634 $\pm$ 0.018 in K and 0.546 $\pm$ 0.016 in G. Obtaining these same values through seismology would require a global temperature shift of ~-70 K, which is compatible with known systematics in spectroscopy., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The importance of studying the Gaia DR2 parallax zero-point by external means was underlined by Lindegren et al. (2018), and initiated by several works making use of Cepheids, eclipsing binaries, and asteroseismology. Despite a very efficient elimination of basic-angle variations, a small fluctuation remains and shows up as a small offset in the Gaia DR2 parallaxes. By combining astrometric, asteroseismic, spectroscopic, and photometric constraints, we undertake a new analysis of the Gaia parallax offset for nearly 3000 red-giant branch (RGB) and 2200 red clump (RC) stars observed by Kepler, as well as about 500 and 700 red giants (both RGB and RC) selected by the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program in campaigns 3 and 6. Engaging into a thorough comparison of the astrometric and asteroseismic parallaxes, we are able to highlight the influence of the asteroseismic method, and measure parallax offsets in the Kepler field that are compatible with independent estimates from literature and open clusters. Moreover, adding the K2 fields to our investigation allows us to retrieve a clear illustration of the positional dependence of the zero-point, in general agreement with the information provided by quasars. Lastly, we initiate a two-step methodology to make progress in the simultaneous calibration of the asteroseismic scaling relations and of the Gaia DR2 parallax offset, which will greatly benefit from the gain in precision with the third Data Release of Gaia., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

We present a new method for determining the location of active bands of latitude on solar-type stars, which uses stellar-cycle-induced frequency shifts of detectable solar-like oscillations. When near-surface activity is distributed in a non-homogeneous manner, oscillation modes of different angular degree and azimuthal order will have their frequencies shifted by different amounts. We use this simple concept, coupled to a model for the spatial distribution of the near-surface activity, to develop two methods that use the frequency shifts to infer minimum and maximum latitudes for the active bands. Our methods respond to the range in latitude over which there is significant magnetic flux present, over and above weak basal ephemeral flux levels. We verify that we are able to draw accurate inferences in the solar case, using Sun-as-a-star helioseismic data and artificial data. We then apply our methods to Kepler data on the solar analogue HD173701, and find that its active bands straddle a much wider range in latitude than do the bands on the Sun., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, MNRAS accepted

Cool main-sequence, sub-giant and red-giant stars all show solar-like oscillations, pulsations that are excited and intrinsically damped by near-surface convection. Many overtones are typically excited to observable amplitudes, giving a rich spectrum of detectable modes. These modes provide a wealth of information on fundamental stellar properties. However, the radial velocity shifts induced by these oscillations can also be problematic when searching for low-mass, long-period planets; this is because their amplitudes are large enough to completely mask such minute planetary signals. Here we show how fine-tuning exposure times to the stellar parameters can help efficiently average out the solar-like-oscillation-induced shifts. To reduce the oscillation signal to the radial velocity precision commensurate with an Earth-analogue, we find that for cool, low-mass stars (near spectral type K) the necessary exposure times may be as short as 4 minutes, while for hotter, higher-mass stars (near spectral type F, or slightly evolved) the required exposure times can be longer than 100 minutes. We provide guideline exposure durations required to suppress the total observed amplitude due to oscillations to a level of $0.1\,\rm m\,s^{-1}$, and a level corresponding to the Earth-analogue reflex amplitude for the star. Owing to the intrinsic stochastic variability of the oscillations, we recommend in practice choosing short exposure durations at the telescope and then averaging over those exposures later, as guided by our predictions. We present the discovery of TOI-197.01, the first transiting planet identified by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) for which asteroseismology of the host star is possible. TOI-197 (HIP116158) is a bright (V=8.2 mag), spectroscopically classified subgiant which oscillates with an average frequency of about 430 muHz and displays a clear signature of mixed modes. The oscillation amplitude confirms that the redder TESS bandpass compared to Kepler has a small effect on the oscillations, supporting the expected yield of thousands of solar-like oscillators with TESS 2-minute cadence observations. Asteroseismic modeling yields a robust determination of the host star radius (2.943+/-0.064 Rsun), mass (1.212 +/- 0.074 Msun) and age (4.9+/-1.1 Gyr), and demonstrates that it has just started ascending the red-giant branch. Combining asteroseismology with transit modeling and radial-velocity observations, we show that the planet is a "hot Saturn" (9.17+/-0.33 Rearth) with an orbital period of ~14.3 days, irradiance of 343+/-24 Fearth, moderate mass (60.5 +/- 5.7 Mearth) and density (0.431+/-0.062 gcc). The properties of TOI-197.01 show that the host-star metallicity - planet mass correlation found in sub-Saturns (4-8 Rearth) does not extend to larger radii, indicating that planets in the transition between sub-Saturns and Jupiters follow a relatively narrow range of densities. With a density measured to ~15%, TOI-197.01 is one of the best characterized Saturn-sized planets to date, augmenting the small number of known transiting planets around evolved stars and demonstrating the power of TESS to characterize exoplanets and their host stars using asteroseismology., Comment: 12 pages (excluding author list and references), 9 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in AJ. NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has begun a two-year survey of most of the sky, which will include lightcurves for thousands of solar-like oscillators sampled at a cadence of two minutes. To prepare for this steady stream of data, we present a mock catalogue of lightcurves, designed to realistically mimic the properties of the TESS sample. In the process, we also present the first public release of the asteroFLAG Artificial Dataset Generator, which simulates lightcurves of solar-like oscillators based on input mode properties. The targets are drawn from a simulation of the Milky Way's populations and are selected in the same way as TESS's true Asteroseismic Target List. The lightcurves are produced by combining stellar models, pulsation calculations and semi-empirical models of solar-like oscillators. We describe the details of the catalogue and provide several examples. We provide pristine lightcurves to which noise can be added easily. This mock catalogue will be valuable in testing asteroseismology pipelines for TESS and our methods can be applied in preparation and planning for other observatories and observing campaigns., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS. We present an asteroseismic analysis of the Kepler light curve of KIC 8263801, a red-giant star in the open cluster NGC 6866 that has previously been reported to be a helium-burning red-clump star. We extracted the frequencies of the radial and quadrupole modes from its frequency power spectrum and determined its properties using a grid of evolutionary models constructed with MESA. The oscillation frequencies were calculated using the GYRE code and the surface term was corrected using the Ball & Gizon(2014) prescription. We find that the star has a mass of $M/M_{\odot} = 1.793\pm 0.072$, age $t=1.48\pm 0.21$ Gyr and radius $R/R_{\odot} = 10.53\pm 0.28$. By analyzing the internal structure of the best-fitting model, we infer the evolutionary status of the star KIC 8263801 as being on the ascending part of the red giant branch, and not on the red clump. This result is verified using a purely asteroseismic diagnostic, the $\epsilon_{c}-\Delta\nu_{c}$ diagram which can distinguish red giant branch stars from red clump stars. Finally, by comparing its age with NGC 6866 ($t=0.65 \pm 0.1$ Gyr) we conclude that KIC 8263801 is not a member of this open cluster.

In this work, we have taken advantage of the most recent accurate stellar characterizations carried out using asteroseismology, eclipsing binaries and interferometry to evaluate a comprehensive set of empirical relations for the estimation of stellar masses and radii. We have gathered a total of 934 stars -- of which around two-thirds are on the Main Sequence -- that are characterized with different levels of precision, most of them having estimates of M, R, Teff, L, g, density, and [Fe/H]. We have deliberately used a heterogeneous sample (in terms of characterizing techniques and spectroscopic types) to reduce the influence of possible biases coming from the observation, reduction, and analysis methods used to obtain the stellar parameters. We have studied a total of 576 linear combinations of Teff, L, g, density, and [Fe/H] (and their logarithms) to be used as independent variables to estimate M or R. We have used an error-in-variables linear regression algorithm to extract the relations and to ensure the fair treatment of the uncertainties. We present a total of 38 new or revised relations that have an adj-R2 regression statistic higher than 0.85, and a relative accuracy and precision better than 10% for almost all the cases. The red-giant branch bump provides valuable information for the investigation of the internal structure of low-mass stars. Because current models are unable to accurately predict the occurrence and efficiency of mixing processes beyond convective boundaries, one can use the luminosity of the bump --- a diagnostic of the maximum extension of the convective envelope during the first-dredge up --- as a calibrator for such processes. By combining asteroseismic and spectroscopic constraints, we expand the analysis of the bump to masses and metallicities beyond those previously accessible using globular clusters. Our dataset comprises nearly 3000 red-giant stars observed by {\it Kepler} and with APOGEE spectra. Using statistical mixture models, we are able to detect the bump in the average seismic parameters $\nu_{\rm max}$ and $\langle \Delta \nu \rangle$, and show that its observed position reveals general trends with mass and metallicity in line with expectations from models. Moreover, our analysis indicates that standard stellar models underestimate the depth of efficiently mixed envelopes. The inclusion of significant overshooting from the base of the convective envelope, with an efficiency that increases with decreasing metallicity, allows to reproduce the observed location of the bump. The nearby red giant Aldebaran is known to host a gas giant planetary companion from decades of ground-based spectroscopic radial velocity measurements. Using Gaussian Process-based Continuous Auto-Regressive Moving Average (CARMA) models, we show that these historic data also contain evidence of acoustic oscillations in the star itself, and verify this result with further dedicated ground-based spectroscopy and space-based photometry with the Kepler Space Telescope. From the frequency of these oscillations we determine the mass of Aldebaran to be $1.16 \pm 0.07 \, M_\odot$, and note that this implies its planet will have been subject to insolation comparable to the Earth for some of the star's main sequence lifetime. Observations of Sun-like stars over the last half-century have improved our understanding of how magnetic dynamos, like that responsible for the 11-year solar cycle, change with rotation, mass and age. Here we show for the first time how metallicity can affect a stellar dynamo. Using the most complete set of observations of a stellar cycle ever obtained for a Sun-like star, we show how the solar analog HD 173701 exhibits solar-like differential rotation and a 7.4-year activity cycle. While the duration of the cycle is comparable to that generated by the solar dynamo, the amplitude of the brightness variability is substantially stronger. The only significant difference between HD 173701 and the Sun is its metallicity, which is twice the solar value. Therefore, this provides a unique opportunity to study the effect of the higher metallicity on the dynamo acting in this star and to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed photometric variability. The observations can be explained by the higher metallicity of the star, which is predicted to foster a deeper outer convection zone and a higher facular contrast, resulting in stronger variability., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

(Abridged) We present the first APOKASC catalog of spectroscopic and asteroseismic data for 415 dwarfs and subgiants. Asteroseismic data have been obtained by Kepler in short cadence. The spectroscopic parameters are based on spectra taken as part of APOGEE and correspond to DR13 of SDSS. We analyze our data using two Teff scales, the spectroscopic values from DR13 and those derived from SDSS griz photometry. We use the differences in our results arising from these choices as a test of systematic Teff, and find that they can lead to significant differences in the derived stellar properties. Determinations of surface gravity ($\log{g}$), mean density ($\rho$), radius ($R$), mass ($M$), and age ($\tau$) for the whole sample have been carried out with stellar grid-based modeling. We have assessed random and systematic error sources in the spectroscopic and seismic data, as well as in the grid-based modeling determination of the stellar quantities in the catalog. We provide stellar properties for both Teff scales. The median combined (random and systematic) uncertainties are 2% (0.01 dex; $\log{g}$), 3.4% ($\rho$), 2.6% ($R$), 5.1% ($M$), and 19% ($\tau$) for the photometric Teff scale and 2% ($\log{g}$), 3.5% ($\rho$), 2.7% ($R$), 6.3% ($M$), and 23% ($\tau$) for the spectroscopic scale. Comparisons with stellar quantities in the catalog by Chaplin et al.(2014) highlight the importance of metallicity measurements for determining stellar parameters accurately. We compare our results with those from other sources, including stellar radii determined from TGAS parallaxes and asteroseismic analyses based on individual frequencies. We find a very good agreement in all cases. Comparisons give strong support to the determination of stellar quantities based on global seismology, a relevant result for future missions such as TESS and PLATO. A poor understanding of the impact of convective turbulence in the outer layers of the Sun and Sun-like stars challenges the advance towards an improved understanding of their internal structure and dynamics. Assessing and calibrating these effects is therefore of great importance. Here we study the spatial coherence of granulation noise and oscillation modes in the Sun, with the aim of exploiting any incoherence to beat-down observed granulation noise, hence improving the detection of low-frequency p-modes. Using data from the BiSON 2B instrument, we assess the coherence between different atmospheric heights and between different surface regions. We find that granulation noise from the different atmospheric heights probed is largely incoherent; frequency regions dominated by oscillations are almost fully coherent. We find a randomised phase difference for the granulation noise, and a near zero difference for the evanescent oscillations. We investigate the masses of "retired A stars" using asteroseismic detections on seven low-luminosity red-giant and sub-giant stars observed by the NASA Kepler and K2 Missions. Our aim is to explore whether masses derived from spectroscopy and isochrone fitting may have been systematically overestimated. Our targets have all previously been subject to long term radial velocity observations to detect orbiting bodies, and satisfy the criteria used by Johnson et al. (2006) to select survey stars that may have had A-type (or early F-type) main-sequence progenitors. The sample actually spans a somewhat wider range in mass, from $\approx 1\,\rm M_{\odot}$ up to $\approx 1.7\,\rm M_{\odot}$. Whilst for five of the seven stars the reported discovery mass from spectroscopy exceeds the mass estimated using asteroseismology, there is no strong evidence for a significant, systematic bias across the sample. Moreover, comparisons with other masses from the literature show that the absolute scale of any differences is highly sensitive to the chosen reference literature mass, with the scatter between different literature masses significantly larger than reported error bars. We find that any mass difference can be explained through use of differing constraints during the recovery process. We also conclude that underestimated uncertainties on the input parameters can significantly bias the recovered stellar masses, which may have contributed to the controversy on the mass scale for retired A stars., Comment: Accepted MNRAS, 14 pages, 7 Figures, 3 Tables

We present a comparison of parallaxes and radii from asteroseismology and Gaia DR1 (TGAS) for 2200 Kepler stars spanning from the main sequence to the red giant branch. We show that previously identified offsets between TGAS parallaxes and distances derived from asteroseismology and eclipsing binaries have likely been overestimated for parallaxes <~ 5-10 mas (~ 90-98% of the TGAS sample). The observed differences in our sample can furthermore be partially compensated by adopting a hotter Teff scale (such as the infrared flux method) instead of spectroscopic temperatures for dwarfs and subgiants. Residual systematic differences are at the ~ 2% level in parallax across three orders of magnitude. We use TGAS parallaxes to empirically demonstrate that asteroseismic radii are accurate to ~ 5% or better for stars between ~ 0.8-8 Rsun. We find no significant offset for main-sequence (<~ 1.5 Rsun) and low-luminosity RGB stars (~ 3-8 Rsun), but seismic radii appear to be systematically underestimated by ~5% for subgiants (~ 1.5-3 Rsun). We find no systematic errors as a function of metallicity between [Fe/H] ~ -0.8 to +0.4 dex, and show tentative evidence that corrections to the scaling relation for the large frequency separation (Dnu) improve the agreement with TGAS for RGB stars. Finally, we demonstrate that beyond ~ 3 kpc asteroseismology will provide more precise distances than end-of-mission Gaia data, highlighting the synergy and complementary nature of Gaia and asteroseismology for studying galactic stellar populations., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ. The scaling relations that relate the average asteroseismic parameters $\Delta \nu$ and $\nu_{\max}$ to the global properties of stars are used quite extensively to determine stellar properties. While the $\Delta \nu$ scaling relation has been examined carefully and the deviations from the relation have been well documented, the $\nu_{\max}$ scaling relation has not been examined as extensively. In this paper we examine the $\nu_{\max}$ scaling relation using a set of stellar models constructed to have a wide range of mass, metallicity, and age. We find that as with $\Delta \nu$, $\nu_{\max}$ does not follow the simple scaling relation. The most visible deviation is because of a mean molecular weight term and a $\Gamma_1$ term that are commonly ignored. The remaining deviation is more difficult to address. We find that the influence of the scaling relation errors on asteroseismically derived values of $\log g$ are well within uncertainties. Doppler-based planet surveys point to an increasing occurrence rate of giant planets with stellar mass. Such surveys rely on evolved stars for a sample of intermediate-mass stars (so-called retired A stars), which are more amenable to Doppler observations than their main-sequence progenitors. However, it has been hypothesised that the masses of subgiant and low-luminosity red-giant stars targeted by these surveys --- typically derived from a combination of spectroscopy and isochrone fitting --- may be systematically overestimated. Here, we test this hypothesis for the particular case of the exoplanet-host star HD 212771 using K2 asteroseismology. The benchmark asteroseismic mass ($1.45^{+0.10}_{-0.09}\:\text{M}_{\odot}$) is significantly higher than the value reported in the discovery paper ($1.15\pm0.08\:\text{M}_{\odot}$), which has been used to inform the stellar mass-planet occurrence relation. This result, therefore, does not lend support to the above hypothesis. Implications for the fates of planetary systems are sensitively dependent on stellar mass. Recent results have suggested that there is tension between the Gaia DR1 TGAS distances and the distances obtained using luminosities determined by eclipsing binaries or asteroseismology on red giant stars. We use the $K_s$-band luminosities of red clump stars, identified and characterized by asteroseismology, to make independent distance estimates. Our results suggest that Gaia TGAS distances contain a systematic error that decreases with increasing distance. We propose a correction to mitigate this offset as a function of parallax that is valid for the Kepler field and values of parallax that are less than ${\sim} 1.6 \rm \, mas$. For parallaxes greater than this we find agreement with previously published values. The advent of space-based missions like $Kepler$ has revolutionized the study of solar-type stars, particularly through the measurement and modeling of their resonant modes of oscillation. Here we analyze a sample of 66 $Kepler$ main-sequence stars showing solar-like oscillations as part of the $Kepler$ seismic LEGACY project. We use $Kepler$ short-cadence data, of which each star has at least 12 months, to create frequency power spectra optimized for asteroseismology. For each star we identify its modes of oscillation and extract parameters such as frequency, amplitude, and line width using a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo `peak-bagging' approach. We report the extracted mode parameters for all 66 stars, as well as derived quantities such as frequency difference ratios, the large and small separations $\Delta\nu$ and $\delta\nu_{02}$; the behavior of line widths with frequency and line widths at $\nu_{\rm max}$ with $T_{\rm eff}$, for which we derive parametrizations; and behavior of mode visibilities. These average properties can be applied in future peak-bagging exercises to better constrain the parameters of the stellar oscillation spectra. We use asteroseismic data from the Kepler satellite to determine fundamental stellar properties of the 66 main-sequence targets observed for at least one full year by the mission. We distributed tens of individual oscillation frequencies extracted from the time series of each star among seven modelling teams who applied different methods to determine radii, masses, and ages for all stars in the sample. Comparisons among the different results reveal a good level of agreement in all stellar properties, which is remarkable considering the variety of codes, input physics and analysis methods employed by the different teams. Average uncertainties are of the order of $\sim$2\% in radius, $\sim$4\% in mass, and $\sim$10\% in age, making this the best-characterised sample of main-sequence stars available to date. Our predicted initial abundances and mixing-length parameters are checked against inferences from chemical enrichment laws $\Delta Y / \Delta Z$ and predictions from 3D atmospheric simulations. We test the accuracy of the determined stellar properties by comparing them to the Sun, angular diameter measurements, Gaia parallaxes, and binary evolution, finding excellent agreement in all cases and further confirming the robustness of asteroseismically-determined physical parameters of stars when individual frequencies of oscillation are available. Baptised as the Kepler dwarfs LEGACY sample, these stars are the solar-like oscillators with the best asteroseismic properties available for at least another decade. We present an asteroseismic analysis of 33 solar-type stars observed in short cadence during Campaigns (C) 1-3 of the NASA K2 mission. We were able to extract both average seismic parameters and individual mode frequencies for stars with dominant frequencies up to ~3300{\mu}Hz, and we find that data for some targets are good enough to allow for a measurement of the rotational splitting. Modelling of the extracted parameters is performed by using grid-based methods using average parameters and individual frequencies together with spectroscopic parameters. For the target selection in C3, stars were chosen as in C1 and C2 to cover a wide range in parameter space to better understand the performance and noise characteristics. For C3 we still detected oscillations in 73% of the observed stars that we proposed. Future K2 campaigns hold great promise for the study of nearby clusters and the chemical evolution and age-metallicity relation of nearby field stars in the solar neighbourhood. We expect oscillations to be detected in ~388 short-cadence targets if the K2 mission continues until C18, which will greatly complement the ~500 detections of solar-like oscillations made for short-cadence targets during the nominal Kepler mission.
