Search

ZrW$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is the prototypical example of a material exhibiting negative thermal expansion (NTE). As well as being among the first NTE materials to be studied in detail, it has served as a test bed for ideas for the physical mechanisms that lead to this unusual behavior. It is now widely accepted that here, and in many other framework materials exhibiting NTE, a collection of low energy phonon modes, as opposed to just one or two, are responsible for the anomalous thermal properties. However, quantitative verification and analysis of the density functional theory (DFT) calculations which underpin this proposal are still lacking. In particular, probing the low energy phonons directly throughout reciprocal space using inelastic neutron scattering, as opposed to other techniques which only probe the Brillouin zone center, is technically challenging and hence rarely done. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering measurements in a large number of Brillouin zones, achieved via the time of flight technique, over a 400 K temperature range. We find excellent agreement between DFT calculations and experimental data at low temperature, albeit with a rescaling of the calculated phonon energies, and of the lattice parameter used in the calculations compared to the measured value. However, the shifts in phonon modes due to the reduction in lattice parameter on warming, that can be predicted using DFT, are not observed. This is most likely due to counteractive anharmonic effects arising from the increased amplitude of lattice vibrations at elevated temperatures. Notwithstanding, the good agreement between experiment and DFT gives high confidence that the theory's predictions of atomic motions for different modes is correct, and hence can be used as a reliable basis for quantitative analysis of NTE effects., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is a spinel based on magnetic V$^{3+}$ ions which host both spin ($S=1$) and orbital ($l_{eff}=1$) moments. Owing to the underlying pyrochlore coordination of the magnetic sites, the spins in MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ only antiferromagnetically order once the frustrating interactions imposed by the $Fd\overline{3}m$ lattice are broken through an orbitally-driven structural distortion at T$_{S}$ $\simeq$ 60 K. Consequently, a N\'eel transition occurs at T$_{N}$ $\simeq$ 40 K. Low temperature spatial ordering of the electronic orbitals is fundamental to both the structural and magnetic properties, however considerable discussion on whether it can be described by complex or real orbital ordering is ambiguous. We apply neutron spectroscopy to resolve the nature of the orbital ground state and characterize hysteretic spin-orbital correlations using x-ray and neutron diffraction. Neutron spectroscopy finds multiple excitation bands and we parameterize these in terms of a multi-level (or excitonic) theory based on the orbitally degenerate ground state. Meaningful for the orbital ground state, we report an "optical-like" mode at high energies that we attribute to a crystal-field-like excitation from the spin-orbital $j_{eff}$=2 ground state manifold to an excited $j_{eff}$=1 energy level. We parameterize the magnetic excitations in terms of a Hamiltonian with spin-orbit coupling and local crystalline electric field distortions resulting from deviations from perfect octahedra surrounding the V$^{3+}$ ions. We suggest that this provides compelling evidence for complex orbital order in MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$. We then apply the consequences of this model to understand hysteretic effects in the magnetic diffuse scattering where we propose that MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ displays a high temperature orbital memory of the low temperature spin order., Comment: 21 pages and 13 figures

CsO2 is a member of the family of alkali superoxides (formula AO2 with A= Na, K, Rb and Cs) that exhibit magnetic behavior arising from open $p$-shell electrons residing on O2- molecules. We use neutron diffraction to solve the crystal and magnetic structures of CsO2, and observe a complex series of structures on cooling from room temperature to 1.6 K. These include an incommensurate modulation along the a-axis of the structure at intermediate temperatures, which then locks into a commensurate modulation that doubles the unit cell compared to the previously supposed orthorhombic unit cell. In both incommensurate and commensurate phases our structural solution involves a staggering of the cesium ion positions along the b-axis, in contrast to studies of other alkali superoxides in which staggered tilts of the O2- dimers relative to the c-axis are seen. Below T ~ 10 K we observe magnetic Bragg reflections arising from an antiferromagnetically ordered structure with a wavevector of k = (0,0,0) (relative to the doubled crystallographic unit cell), with moments that point predominantly along the b-axis with a small component along the a-axis that hints at possible anisotropic exchange coupling (consistent with the crystal structure). Measurements of the magnetic Bragg reflections in an applied magnetic field suggest a spin-flop transition takes place between 2 T and 4 T in which moments likely flop to point along the crystallographic a-axis. Our measurements indicate that CsO2 is an interesting example of magnetic properties being inherently linked to the crystal structure, in that the staggered displacement of the cesium ions activates antisymmetric exchange which then permits the observed spin canting., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables

The magnetic excitations in ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ were studied by inelastic neutron scattering combining experiments on triple-axis and time-of-flight spectrometers with and without polarization analysis. A quadratic spin-wave dispersion with an anisotropy gap describes the low-energy low-temperature response. The magnon dispersion extends to at least 35 meV and there is no direct evidence for a continuum of Stoner excitations below this energy. However, the magnon response is weakened at higher energy. In addition to the anomalous softening of the spin-wave stiffness and of the gap, which is induced by the topology of the Bloch states, the magnon excitations are broadened in energy and this effect increases upon heating.

MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is based on the noncentrosymmetric $P321$ space group with magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ ($S={5/2}$, $L\approx 0$) spins ordering below $T_{\mathrm{N}}=12$ K in a helicoidal structure. The ground state magnetic structure, expected to be built and originate from 7 Heisenberg exchange constants, has been shown to be coupled to the underlying crystallographic chirality with polar domain switching being reported. We apply neutron spectroscopy to extract these symmetric exchange constants. Given the high complexity of the magnetic exchange network, crystallographic structure and complications fitting linear spin-wave models, we take advantage of multiplexed neutron instrumentation to use the first moment sum rule of neutron scattering to estimate the 7 exchange constants. We then use these parameters to calculate the low-energy spin-waves in the N\'eel state to reproduce the neutron response without strong antisymmetric coupling. Using Green's response functions, the stability of long-wavelength excitations in the context of proposed magnetic structures is then discussed. The results show the presence of strong exchange constants for the chiral exchange pathways and illustrate an underlying coupling between crystallographic and magnetic ``chirality" through predominantely symmetric exchange.

RbFe$^{2+}$Fe$^{3+}$F$_{6}$ is an example of an antiferromagnet with charge ordering of the octahedrally coordinated Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ ions. As well as different spin values, Fe$^{2+}$ ($S=2$) and Fe$^{3+}$ ($S={5\over2}$) possess differing orbital ground states with Fe$^{2+}$ having an orbital degeneracy with an effective orbital angular momentum of $l=1$. The resulting low temperature magnetic structure is non collinear with the spins aligned perpendicular to nearest neighbors (S. W. Kim \textit{et al.} Chem. Sci. {\bf{3}}, 741 (2012)). The combination of an orbital degeneracy and non collinear spin arrangements introduces the possibility for unusual types of excitations such as amplitude modes of the order parameter. In this paper we investigate this by applying a multi-level analysis to model neutron spectroscopy data (M. Songvilay \textit{et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf{121}}, 087201 (2018)). In particular, we discuss the possible origins of the momentum and energy broadened continuum scattering observed in terms of amplitude fluctuations allowed through the presence of an orbital degree of freedom on the Fe$^{2+}$ site. We extend previous spin-orbit exciton models based on a collinear spin structure to understand the measured low-energy excitations and also to predict and discuss possible amplitude mode scattering in RbFe$^{2+}$Fe$^{3+}$F$_{6}$., Comment: 17 pages and 7 figures

Neutron spectroscopy measurements have been performed on single crystals of the antiferromagnetic van der Waals compound NiPS$_3$. Linear spin wave theory using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with single-ion anisotropies has been applied to determine the magnetic exchange parameters and the nature of the anisotropy. The analysis reveals that NiPS$_3$ is less two-dimensional than its sister compounds, with a relatively large ferromagnetic exchange of $J^{\prime} = -0.3$ meV between the layered \emph{ab} planes. In-plane magnetic exchange interactions up to the third nearest-neighbour were required to fit the data. The nearest-neighbour exchange was ferromagnetic with $J_1 = -2.6$ meV, the second neighbour was antiferromagnetic and small with $J_2 = 0.2$ meV, and the dominant antiferromagnetic third neighbour exchange was $J_3 = 13.5$ meV. The anisotropy was shown to be largely XY-like with a small uniaxial component, leading to the appearance of two low-energy spin wave modes in the spin wave spectrum at the Brillouin zone centre. The analysis could reproduce the spin wave energies, however there are discrepancies with the calculated neutron intensities hinting at more exotic phenomena., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 33 references

The NaZn13 type itinerant magnet LaFe13-xSix has seen considerable interest due to its unique combination of large magnetocaloric effect and low hysteresis. Here we demonstrate, with a combination of magnetometry, bespoke microcalorimetry and inelastic neutron scattering that this is due to the presence of paramagnetic spin fluctuations, which build up as the critical point is approached. While thermal measurements show significant latent heat independent changes in the heat capacity, inelastic neutron scattering reveals the presence of broad quasielastic scattering that persists above Tc, in addition to a finite Q quasielastic peak at Q=0.52 A$^{-1}$ (close to a 100 Bragg reflection in this system at Q = 0.54 A$^{-1}$). This finite Q quasielastic peak appears only in the paramagnetic state and when in proximity to the itinerant metamagnetic transition. We associate these observations with a hidden competing phase and spin fluctuations close to the transition temperature and magnetic field, that persist across the magnetic transition.

CaFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is an $S=5/2$ antiferromagnet exhibiting two magnetic orders which shows regions of coexistence at some temperatures. Using a Green's function formalism, we model neutron scattering data of the spin wave excitations in this material, ellucidating the microscopic spin Hamiltonian. In doing so, we suggest that the low temperature A phase order $(\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow)$ finds its origins in the freezing of antiphase boundaries created by thermal fluctuations in a parent B phase order $(\uparrow\downarrow\uparrow\downarrow)$. The low temperature magnetic order observed in CaFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is thus the result of a competition between the exchange coupling along $c$, which favors the B phase, and the single-ion anisotropy which stabilizes thermally-generated antiphase boundaries, leading to static metastable A phase order at low temperatures., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

VI$_{3}$ is a ferromagnet with planar honeycomb sheets of bonded V$^{3+}$ ions held together by van der Waals forces. We apply neutron spectroscopy to measure the two dimensional ($J/J_{c} \approx 17$) magnetic excitations in the ferromagnetic phase, finding two energetically gapped ($\Delta \approx k_{B} T_{c} \approx$ 55 K) and dispersive excitations. We apply a multi-level spin wave formalism to describe the spectra in terms of two coexisting domains hosting differing V$^{3+}$ orbital ground states built from contrasting distorted octahedral environments. This analysis fits a common nearest neighbor in-plane exchange coupling ($J$=-8.6 $\pm$ 0.3 meV) between V$^{3+}$ sites. The distorted local crystalline electric field combined with spin-orbit coupling provides the needed magnetic anisotropy for spatially long-ranged two-dimensional ferromagnetism in VI$_{3}$., Comment: (main text - 7 pages, 4 figures; supplementary information - 13 pages, 9 figures, to be published in Phys. We report the signatures of dynamic spin fluctuations in the layered honeycomb Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ compound, with a 3$d$ S = 1/2 $d^9$ Cu$^{2+}$ configuration, through muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR) and neutron scattering studies. Our zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF)-$\mu$SR results demonstrate the slowing down of the Cu$^{2+}$ spin fluctuations below 4.0 K. The saturation of the ZF relaxation rate at low temperature, together with its weak dependence on the longitudinal field between 0 and 3.2 kG, indicates the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at 80 mK without static order. Neutron scattering study reveals the gaped magnetic excitations with three modes at 7.7, 13.5 and 33 meV. Our DFT calculations reveal that the next nearest neighbors (NNN) AFM exchange ($J_{AFM}$ = 31 meV) is stronger than the NN FM exchange ($J_{FM}$ = -21 meV) indicating the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom. Our results suggest that the physics of Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ can be explained by an alternating AFM chain rather than the honeycomb lattice., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

An instrument and software algorithm is described for the purpose of characterization of large single crystals at the Alignment Facility (ALF) of the ISIS spallation neutron source. We describe a method for both characterizing the quality of the sample and also aligning it in a particular scattering plane. We present a software package written for this instrument and demonstrate its utility by way of an example of the structural characterization of large singles crystals of Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$. We suggest extensions and modifications of characterization instruments for future improved beamlines. We analyze the low-energy dynamics of quasi one dimensional, large-$S$ quantum antiferromagnets with easy-axis anisotropy, using a semi-classical non-linear sigma model. The saddle point approximation leads to a sine Gordon equation which supports soliton solutions. These correspond to the movement of spatially extended domain walls. Long-range magnetic order is a consequence of a weak inter-chain coupling. Below the ordering temperature, the coupling to nearby chains leads to an energy cost associated with the separation of two domain walls. From the kink-antikink two-soliton solution, we compute the effective confinement potential. At distances large compared to the size of the solitons the potential is linear, as expected for point-like domain walls. At small distances the gradual annihilation of the solitons weakens the effective attraction and renders the potential quadratic. From numerically solving the effective one dimensional Schr\"oedinger equation with this non-linear confinement potential we compute the soliton bound state spectrum. We apply the theory to CaFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$, an anisotropic $S=5/2$ magnet based upon antiferromagnetic zig-zag chains. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we are able to resolve seven discrete energy levels for spectra recorded slightly below the N\'eel temperature $T_\textrm{N}\approx 200$~K. These modes are well described by our non-linear confinement model in the regime of large spatially extended solitons., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

CoO has an odd number of electrons in its unit cell, and therefore is expected to be metallic. Yet, CoO is strongly insulating owing to significant electronic correlations, thus classifying it as a Mott insulator. We investigate the magnetic fluctuations in CoO using neutron spectroscopy. The strong and spatially far-reaching exchange constants reported in [Sarte et al. Phys. Rev. B 98 024415 (2018)], combined with the single-ion spin-orbit coupling of similar magnitude [Cowley et al. Phys. Rev. B 88, 205117 (2013)] results in significant mixing between $j_{eff}$ spin-orbit levels in the low temperature magnetically ordered phase. The high degree of entanglement, combined with the structural domains originating from the Jahn-Teller structural distortion at $\sim$ 300 K, make the magnetic excitation spectrum highly structured in both energy and momentum. We extend previous theoretical work on PrTl$_{3}$ [Buyers et al. Phys. Rev. B 11, 266 (1975)] to construct a mean-field and multi-level spin exciton model employing the aforementioned spin exchange and spin-orbit coupling parameters for coupled Co$^{2+}$ ions on a rocksalt lattice. This parameterization, based on a tetragonally distorted type-II antiferromagnetic unit cell, captures both the sharp low energy excitations at the magnetic zone center, and the energy broadened peaks at the zone boundary. However, the model fails to describe the momentum dependence of the excitations at high energy transfers, where the neutron response decays faster with momentum than the Co$^{2+}$ form factor. We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$, derived from SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveals the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors $\textbf{Q}_{\rm AF}$=(1,0) and $\textbf{Q}_{\rm FM}$=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$ are closely associated with a flat band of the $e_g$ orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the $t_{2g}$ orbitals in superconducting SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$. Therefore, Co-substitution in SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ induces a $t_{2g}$ to $e_g$ orbital switching, and is responsible for FM spin fluctuations detrimental to the singlet pairing superconductivity., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material available upon request, to be published in PRL

The MAPS direct geometry time-of-flight chopper spectrometer at the ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source has been in operation since 1999 and its novel use of a large array of position-sensitive neutron detectors paved the way for a later generations of chopper spectrometers around the world. Almost two decades of experience of user operations on MAPS, together with lessons learned from the operation of new generation instruments, led to a decision to perform three parallel upgrades to the instrument. These were to replace the primary beamline collimation with supermirror neutron guides, to install a disk chopper, and to modify the geometry of the poisoning in the water moderator viewed by MAPS. Together these upgrades were expected to increase the neutron flux substantially, to allow more flexible use of repetition rate multiplication and to reduce some sources of background. Here we report the details of these upgrades, and compare the performance of the instrument before and after their installation, as well as to Monte Carlo simulations. These illustrate that the instrument is performing in line with, and in some respects in excess of, expectations. It is anticipated that the improvement in performance will have a significant impact on the capabilities of the instrument. Neutron inelastic scattering has been used to measure the magnetic excitations in powdered NiPS$_3$, a quasi-two dimensional antiferromagnet with spin $S = 1$ on a honeycomb lattice. The spectra show clear, dispersive magnons with a $\sim 7$ meV gap at the Brillouin zone center. The data were fitted using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a single-ion anisotropy assuming no magnetic exchange between the honeycomb planes. Magnetic exchange interactions up to the third intraplanar nearest-neighbour were required. The fits show robustly that NiPS$_3$ has an easy axis anisotropy with $\Delta = 0.3$ meV and that the third nearest-neighbour has a strong antiferromagnetic exchange of $J_3 = -6.90$ meV. The data can be fitted reasonably well with either $J_1 < 0$ or $J_1 > 0$, however the best quantitative agreement with high-resolution data indicate that the nearest-neighbour interaction is ferromagnetic with $J_1 = 1.9$ meV and that the second nearest-neighbour exchange is small and antiferromagnetic with $J_2 = -0.1$ meV. The dispersion has a minimum in the Brillouin zone corner that is slightly larger than that at the Brillouin zone center, indicating that the magnetic structure of NiPS$_3$ is close to being unstable., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, 33 references

We report the spontaneous decay of a soft, optical phonon in a solid. Using neutron spectroscopy, we find that specific phonon lifetimes in the relaxor PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ are anomalously short within well-defined ranges of energy and momentum. This behavior is independent of ferroelectric order and occurs when the optical phonon with a specific energy and momentum can kinematically decay into two acoustic phonons with lower phase velocity. We interpret the well-known relaxor "waterfall" effect as a form of quasiparticle decay analogous to that previously reported in quantum spin liquids and quantum fluids., Comment: (5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. The magnetic properties of CuO encompass several contemporary themes in condensed matter physics, including quantum magnetism, magnetic frustration, magnetically-induced ferroelectricity and orbital currents. Here we report polarized and unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering measurements which provide a comprehensive map of the cooperative spin dynamics in the low temperature antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase of CuO throughout much of the Brillouin zone. At high energies ($E \gtrsim 100$\,meV) the spectrum displays continuum features consistent with the des Cloizeax--Pearson dispersion for an ideal $S=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg AFM chain. At lower energies the spectrum becomes more three-dimensional, and we find that a linear spin-wave model for a Heisenberg AFM provides a very good description of the data, allowing for an accurate determination of the relevant exchange constants in an effective spin Hamiltonian for CuO. In the high temperature helicoidal phase, there are features in the measured low-energy spectrum that we could not reproduce with a spin-only model. We discuss how these might be associated with the magnetically-induced multiferroic behavior observed in this phase.

Magnetic spinels (with chemical formula $AX_{2}$O$_{4}$, with $X$ a 3$d$ transition metal ion) that also have an orbital degeneracy are Jahn-Teller active and hence possess a coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom. At high temperatures, MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is a cubic spinel based on V$^{3+}$ ions with a spin $S$=1 and a triply degenerate orbital ground state. A structural transition occurs at T$_{OO}$=63 K to an orbitally ordered phase with a tetragonal unit cell followed by an antiferromagnetic transition of T$_{N}$=42 K on cooling. We apply neutron spectroscopy in single crystals of MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ to show an anomaly for intermediate wavevectors at T$_{OO}$ associated with the acoustic phonon sensitive to the shear elastic modulus $\left(C_{11}-C_{12}\right)/2$. On warming, the shear mode softens for momentum transfers near close to half the Brillouin zone boundary, but recovers near the zone centre. High resolution spin-echo measurements further illustrate a temporal broadening with increased temperature over this intermediate range of wavevectors, indicative of a reduction in phonon lifetime. A subtle shift in phonon frequencies over the same range of momentum transfers is observed with magnetic fields. We discuss this acoustic anomaly in context of coupling to orbital and charge fluctuations., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

The magnetic insulator Yttrium Iron Garnet can be grown with exceptional quality, has a ferrimagnetic transition temperature of nearly 600 K, and is used in microwave and spintronic devices that can operate at room temperature. The most accurate prior measurements of the magnon spectrum date back nearly 40 years, but cover only 3 of the lowest energy modes out of 20 distinct magnon branches. Here we have used time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering to measure the full magnon spectrum throughout the Brillouin zone. We find that the existing model of the excitation spectrum, well known from an earlier work titled "The Saga of YIG", fails to describe the optical magnon modes. Using a very general spin Hamiltonian, we show that the magnetic interactions are both longer-ranged and more complex than was previously understood. The results provide the basis for accurate microscopic models of the finite temperature magnetic properties of Yttrium Iron Garnet, necessary for next-generation electronic devices., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 4 supplementary figures, 1 table, 1 supplementary table

We report detailed neutron scattering studies on Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$. The compound consists of two interpenetrating sublattices of Cu, labeled as Cu$_{\rm A}$ and Cu$_{\rm B}$, each of which forms a square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The two sublattices order at different temperatures and effective exchange couplings within the sublattices differ by an order of magnitude. This yields an inelastic neutron spectrum of the Cu$_{\rm A}$ sublattice extending up to 300 meV and a much weaker dispersion of Cu$_{\rm B}$ going up to around 20 meV. Using a single-band Hubbard model we derive an effective spin Hamiltonian. From this, we find that linear spin-wave theory gives a good description to the magnetic spectrum. In addition, a magnetic field of 10 T is found to produce effects on the Cu$_{\rm B}$ dispersion that cannot be explained by conventional spin-wave theory., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

The Fe1+xTe phase diagram consists of two distinct magnetic structures with collinear order present at low interstitial iron concentrations and a helical phase at large values of x with these phases separated by a Lifshitz point. We use unpolarized single crystal diffraction to confirm the helical phase for large interstitial iron concentrations and polarized single crystal diffraction to demonstrate the collinear order for the iron deficient side of the Fe1+xTe phase diagram. Polarized neutron inelastic scattering show that the fluctuations associated with this collinear order are predominately transverse at low energy transfers, consistent with a localized magnetic moment picture. We then apply neutron inelastic scattering and polarization analysis to investigate the dynamics and structure near the boundary between collinear and helical order in the Fe1+xTe phase diagram. We first show that the phase separating collinear and helical order is characterized by a spin-density wave with a single propagation wave vector of (~ 0.45, 0, 0.5). We do not observe harmonics or the presence of a charge density wave. The magnetic fluctuations associated with this wavevector are different from the collinear phase being strongly longitudinal in nature and correlated anisotropically in the (H,K) plane. The excitations preserve the C4 symmetry of the lattice, but display different widths in momentum along the two tetragonal directions at low energy transfers. While the low energy excitations and minimal magnetic phase diagram can be understood in terms of localized interactions, we suggest that the presence of density wave phase implies the importance of electronic and orbital properties., Comment: (13 pages, 11 figures, to be published in Physical Review B)

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study temperature and energy dependence of spin excitations in optimally P-doped BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 superconductor (Tc = 30 K) throughout the Brillouin zone. In the undoped state, spin waves and paramagnetic spin excitations of BaFe2As2 stem from antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering wave vector QAF= (1/-1,0) and peaks near zone boundary at (1/-1,1/-1) around 180 meV. Replacing 30% As by smaller P to induce superconductivity, low-energy spin excitations of BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2form a resonance in the superconducting state and high-energy spin excitations now peaks around 220 meV near (1/-1,1/-1). These results are consistent with calculations from a combined density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory, and suggest that the decreased average pnictogen height in BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 reduces the strength of electron correlations and increases the effective bandwidth of magnetic excitations., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, with supplementary

We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a powder sample of the superconductor lithium iron selenide hydroxide Li$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$ODFe$_{1-y}$Se ($x \simeq 0.16, y \simeq 0.02$, $T_{\rm c} = 41$\,K). The spectrum shows an enhanced intensity below $T_{\rm c}$ over an energy range $0.64\times2\Delta < E < 2\Delta$, where $\Delta$ is the superconducting gap, with maxima at the wave vectors $Q_1 \simeq 1.46$\,\AA$^{-1}$ and $Q_2 \simeq 1.97$\,\AA$^{-1}$. The behavior of this feature is consistent with the spin resonance mode found in other unconventional superconductors, and strongly resembles the spin resonance observed in the spectrum of the molecular-intercalated iron selenide, Li$_{0.6}$(ND$_{2}$)$_{0.2}$(ND$_{3}$)$_{0.8}$Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$. The signal can be described with a characteristic two-dimensional wave vector $(\pi, 0.67\pi)$ in the Brillouin zone of the iron square lattice, consistent with the nesting vector between electron Fermi sheets.

CaFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is a $S={5\over 2}$ anisotropic antiferromagnet based upon zig-zag chains having two competing magnetic structures, denoted as the A ($\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$) and B ($\uparrow \downarrow \uparrow \downarrow$) phases, which differ by the $c$-axis stacking of ferromagnetic stripes. We apply neutron scattering to demonstrate that the competing A and B phase order parameters results in magnetic antiphase boundaries along $c$ which freeze on the timescale of $\sim$ 1 ns at the onset of magnetic order at 200 K. Using high resolution neutron spectroscopy, we find quantized spin wave levels and measure 9 such excitations localized in regions $\sim$ 1-2 $c$-axis lattice constants in size. We discuss these in the context of solitary magnons predicted to exist in anisotropic systems. The HORACE suite of programs has been developed to work with large multiple-measurement data sets collected from time-of-flight neutron spectrometers equipped with arrays of position-sensitive detectors. The software allows exploratory studies of the four dimensions of reciprocal space and excitation energy to be undertaken, enabling multi-dimensional subsets to be visualized, algebraically manipulated, and models for the scattering to simulated or fitted to the data. The software is designed to be an extensible framework, thus allowing user-customized operations to be performed on the data. Examples of the use of its features are given for measurements exploring the spin waves of the simple antiferromagnet RbMnF$_{3}$ and ferromagnetic iron, and the phonons in URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

An inelastic neutron scattering study of the spin waves corresponding to the stripe antiferromagnetic order in insulating Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$ throughout the Brillouin zone is reported. The spin wave spectra are well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with anisotropic in-plane exchange interactions. Integrating the ordered moment and the spin fluctuations results in a total moment squared of $27.6\pm4.2\mu_B^2$/Fe, consistent with $\mathrm{S \approx 2}$. Unlike $X$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($X=$ Ca, Sr, and Ba), where the itinerant electrons have a significant contribution, our data suggest that this stripe antiferromagnetically ordered phase in Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$ is a Mott-like insulator with fully localized $3d$ electrons and a high-spin ground state configuration. We have performed powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the unconventional superconductor $\beta$-FeSe ($T_{\rm c} \simeq 8\,\mathrm{K}$). The spectra reveal highly dispersive paramagnetic fluctuations emerging from the square-lattice wave vector $(\pi,0)$ extending beyond 80 meV in energy. Measurements as a function of temperature at an energy of $\sim 13\,\mathrm{meV}$ did not show any variation from $T_{\rm c}$ to $104\,\mathrm{K}$. The results show that FeSe is close to an instability towards $(\pi,0)$ antiferromagnetism characteristic of the parent phases of the high-$T_{\rm c}$ iron arsenide superconductors, and that the iron paramagnetic moment is neither affected by the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal structural transition at $T_{\rm s} \simeq 90\,\mathrm{K}$ nor does it undergo a change in spin state over the temperature range studied., Comment: Revised version, includes Supplementary Material

We have used time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering to measure the spin wave spectrum of the canonical half-doped manganite Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$, in its magnetic and orbitally ordered phase. The data, which cover multiple Brillouin zones and the entire energy range of the excitations, are compared with several different models that are all consistent with the CE-type magnetic order, but arise through different exchange coupling schemes. The Goodenough model, i.e. an ordered state comprising strong nearest neighbor ferromagnetic interactions along zig-zag chains with antiferromagnetic inter-chain coupling, provides the best description of the data, provided that further neighbor interactions along the chains are included. We are able to rule out a coupling scheme involving formation of strongly bound ferromagnetic dimers, i.e. Zener polarons, on the basis of gross features of the observed spin wave spectrum. A model with weaker dimerization reproduces the observed dispersion but can be ruled out on the basis of discrepancies between the calculated and observed structure factors at certain positions in reciprocal space. Adding further neighbor interactions results in almost no dimerization, i.e. recovery of the Goodenough model. These results are consistent with theoretical analysis of the degenerate double exchange model for half-doping, and provide a recipe for how to interpret future measurements away from half-doping, where degenerate double exchange models predict more complex ground states., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Neutron spectroscopy is used to investigate the magnetic fluctuations in Fe_{1+x}Te - a parent compound of chalcogenide superconductors. Incommensurate "stripe-like" excitations soften with increased interstitial iron concentration. The energy crossover from incommensurate to stripy fluctuations defines an apparent hour-glass dispersion. Application of sum rules of neutron scattering find that the integrated intensity is inconsistent with an S=1 Fe^{2+} ground state and significantly less than S=2 predicted from weak crystal field arguments pointing towards the Fe^{2+} being in a superposition of orbital states. We present an inelastic neutron scattering study on single-crystalline LiFeAs devoted to the characterization of the incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations at $\mathbf{Q}=(0.5\pm\delta, 0.5\mp\delta, q_l)$. Time-of-flight measurements show the presence of these magnetic fluctuations up to an energy transfer of 60 meV, while polarized neutrons in combination with longitudinal polarization analysis on a triple-axis spectrometer prove the pure magnetic origin of this signal. The normalization of the magnetic scattering to an absolute scale yields that magnetic fluctuations in LiFeAs are by a factor eight weaker than the resonance signal in nearly optimally Co-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, although a factor two is recovered due to the split peaks owing to the incommensurability. The longitudinal polarization analysis indicates weak spin space anisotropy with slightly stronger out-of-plane component between 6 and 12 meV. Furthermore, our data suggest a fine structure of the magnetic signal most likely arising from superposing nesting vectors., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements and analysis of the spectrum of magnons propagating within the Fe2O4 bilayers of LuFe2O4. The observed spectrum is consistent with six magnetic modes and a single prominent gap, which is compatible with a single bilayer magnetic unit cell containing six spins. We model the magnon dispersion by linear spin-wave theory and find very good agreement with the domain-averaged spectrum of a spin-charge bilayer superstructure comprising one Fe3+ -rich monolayer and one Fe2+ -rich monolayer. These findings indicate the existence of polar bilayers in LuFe2O4, contrary to recent studies that advocate a charge-segregated non-polar bilayer model. Weak scattering observed below the magnon gap suggests that a fraction of the bilayers contain other combinations of charged monolayers not included in the model. Magnetic fluctuations in the molecular-intercalated FeSe superconductor Li{x}(ND2){y}(ND3){1-y}Fe2Se2 (Tc = 43K) have been measured by inelastic neutron scattering from a powder sample. The strongest magnetic scattering is observed at a wave vector Q ~ 1.4 A^{-1}, which is not consistent with the (pi,0) nesting wave vector that characterizes magnetic fluctuations in several other iron-based superconductors, but is close to the (pi, pi/2) position found for A{x}Fe{2-y}Se2 systems. At the energies probed (~ 5kB Tc), the magnetic scattering increases in intensity with decreasing temperature below Tc, consistent with the superconductivity-induced magnetic resonance found in other iron-based superconductors., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements on polycrystalline LaFePO and Sr2ScO3FeP, two members of the iron phosphide families of superconductors. No evidence is found for any magnetic fluctuations in the spectrum of either material in the energy and wavevector ranges probed. Special attention is paid to the wavevector at which spin-density-wave-like fluctuations are seen in other iron-based superconductors. We estimate that the magnetic signal, if present, is at least a factor of four (Sr2ScO3FeP) or seven (LaFePO) smaller than in the related iron arsenide and chalcogenide superconductors. These results suggest that magnetic fluctuations are not as influential on the electronic properties of the iron phosphide systems as they are in other iron-based superconductors., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We use neutron scattering to study temperature dependent spin excitations in insulating antiferromagnetic (AF) Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$. In the low-temperature AF state, spin waves can be accurately described by a local moment Heisenberg Hamiltonian. On warming to around the Neel temperature of T_N=500$ K, low-energy (E<30meV) paramagnetic spin excitations form Lorentzian-like quasielastic peaks centered at the AF wave vectors associated with spin waves, while high-energy (E>50meV) spin excitations become heavily damped. Upon further warming to above the structural distortion temperature of T_s=524K, the entire paramagnetic excitations become overdamped. These results suggest that AF Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ is not a copper-oxide-like Mott insulator, and has less electron correlations compared with metallic iron pnictides and iron chalcogenides., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study temperature dependence of the paramagnetic spin excitations in iron pnictide BaFe$_2$As$_2$ throughout the Brillouin zone. In contrast to a conventional local moment Heisenberg system, where paramagnetic spin excitations are expected to have a Lorentzian function centered at zero energy transfer, the high-energy ($\hbar\omega>100$ meV) paramagnetic spin excitations in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ exhibit spin-wave-like features up to at least 290 K ($T= 2.1T_N$). Furthermore, we find that the sizes of the fluctuating magnetic moments $\approx 3.6\ \mu^2_B$ per Fe are essentially temperature independent from the AF ordered state at $0.05T_N$ to $2.1T_N$, which differs considerably from the temperature dependent fluctuating moment observed in the iron chalcogenide Fe$_{1.1}$Te [I. A. Zaliznyak {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 107}, 216403 (2011).]. We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements on the normal and superconducting states of single-crystalline Cs0.8Fe1.9Se2. Consistent with previous measurements on Rb(x)Fe(2-y)Se2, we observe two distinct spin excitation signals: (i) spin-wave excitations characteristic of the block antiferromagnetic order found in insulating A(x)Fe(2-y)Se2 compounds, and (ii) a resonance-like magnetic peak localized in energy at 11 meV and at an in-plane wave vector of (0.25, 0.5). The resonance peak increases below Tc = 27 K, and has a similar absolute intensity to the resonance peaks observed in other Fe-based superconductors. The existence of a magnetic resonance in the spectrum of Rb(x)Fe(2-y)Se2 and now of Cs(x)Fe(2-y)Se2 suggests that this is a common feature of superconductivity in this family. Resonant magnetic x-ray scattering has been used to investigate the magnetic structure of the magnetoelectric multiferroic DyMn2O5. We have studied the magnetic structure in the ferroelectric phase of this material, which displays the strongest ferroelectric polarisation and magnetodielectric effect of the RMn2O5 (where R is a rare earth ion, Y or Bi) family. The magnetic structure observed is similar to that of the other members of the series, but differs in the direction of the ordered moments. In DyMn2O5 both the Dy and Mn moments lie close to the b-axis, whereas in other RMn2O5 they lie close to the a-axis., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Since the discovery of the metallic antiferromagnetic (AF) ground state near superconductivity in iron-pnictide superconductors, a central question has been whether magnetism in these materials arises from weakly correlated electrons, as in the case of spin-density-wave in pure chromium, requires strong electron correlations, or can even be described in terms of localized electrons such as the AF insulating state of copper oxides. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to determine the absolute intensity of the magnetic excitations throughout the Brillouin zone in electron-doped superconducting BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ ($T_c=20$ K), which allows us to obtain the size of the fluctuating magnetic moment $$, and its energy distribution. We find that superconducting BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ and AF BaFe$_2$As$_2$ both have fluctuating magnetic moments $\approx3.2\ \mu_B^2$ per Fe(Ni), which are similar to those found in the AF insulating copper oxides. The common theme in both classes of high temperature superconductors is that magnetic excitations have partly localized character, thus showing the importance of strong correlations for high temperature superconductivity., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Nature Physics

We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements on the stoichiometric iron-based superconductor LiFeAs. We find evidence for (i) magnetic scattering consistent with strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and (ii) an increase in intensity in the superconducting state at low energies, similar to the resonant magnetic excitation observed in other iron-based superconductors. The results do not support a recent theoretical prediction of spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity in LiFeAs, and instead suggest that the mechanism of superconductivity is similar to that in the other iron-based superconductors., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations in SrFe2As2, the parent of a family of iron-based superconductors. The data extend throughout the Brillouin zone and up to energies of ~260meV. An analysis with the local-moment J_1-J2 model implies very different in-plane nearest-neighbor exchange parameters along the $a$ and $b$ directions, both in the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases. However, the spectrum calculated from the J1-J2 model deviates significantly from our data. Polarized neutron inelastic scattering has been used to measure spin excitations in ferromagnetic La$_{0.82}$Sr$_{0.18}$CoO$_{3}$. The magnon spectrum of these spin excitations is well defined at low energies but becomes heavily damped at higher energies, and can be modeled using a quadratic dispersion. We determined a spin wave stiffness constant of $D=94\pm 3$\,meV\,\AA$^{2}$. Assuming a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model we find reasonable agreement between the exchange determined from D and the bulk Curie temperature. Several possible mechanisms to account for the observed spin-wave damping are discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We report neutron scattering measurements of cooperative spin excitations in antiferromagnetically ordered BaFe2As2, the parent phase of an iron pnictide superconductor. The data extend up to ~100meV and show that the spin excitation spectrum is sharp and highly dispersive. By fitting the spectrum to a linear spin-wave model we estimate the magnon bandwidth to be in the region of 0.17eV. X-ray resonant scattering has been used to measure the magnetic order of the Dy ions below 40K in multiferroic DyMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$. The magnetic order has a complex behaviour. There are several different ordering wavevectors, both incommensurate and commensurate, as the temperature is varied. In addition a non-magnetic signal at twice the wavevector of one of the commensurate signals is observed, the maximum intensity of which occurs at the same temperature as a local maximum in the ferroelectric polarisation. Some of the results, which bear resemblence to the behaviour of other members of the RMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ family of multiferroic materials, may be explained by a theory based on so-called acentric spin-density waves., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We report on an extensive investigation of the multiferroic compound TbMnO$_3$. Non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering (NRXMS) revealed a dominant $A$-type domain. The temperature dependence of the intensity and wavevector associated with the incommensurate magnetic order was found to be in good agreement with neutron scattering data. XRS experiments were performed in the vicinity of the Mn $K$ and Tb $L_3$ edges in the high-temperature collinear phase, the intermediate temperature cycloidal/ferroelectric phase, and the low-temperature phase. In the collinear phase resonant $E1-E1$ satellites were found at the Mn $K$ edge associated with $A$-type but also $F$-type peaks. The azimuthal dependence of the $F$-type satellites (and their absence in the NRXMS experiments) indicates that they are most likely non-magnetic in origin. We suggest instead that they may be associated with an induced charge multipole. At the Tb $L_3$ edge resonant $A$- and $F$-type satellites ($E1-E1$) were observed in the collinear phase. These we attribute to a polarisation of the Tb 5$d$ states by the ordering of the Mn sublattice. In the cycloidal/ferroelectric phase a new set of resonant satellites appear corresponding to $C$-type order. These appear at the Tb $L_3$ edge only. In addition to a dominant $E1-E1$ component in the $\sigma-\pi^\prime$ channel, a weaker component is found in the pre-edge with $\sigma-\sigma^\prime$ polarization. Calculations of the XRS were performed using the $FDMNES$ code showing that the unrotated $\sigma-\sigma^\prime$ component of the Tb $L_3$ $C$-type peaks appearing in the ferroelectric phase contains a contribution from a multipole that is odd with respect to both space and time, known in various contexts as the anapole., Comment: Phys. Using polarized neutron scattering we establish that the magnetic order in La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ is either (i) one dimensionally modulated and collinear, consistent with the stripe model or (ii) two dimensionally modulated with a novel noncollinear structure. The measurements rule out a number of alternative models characterized by 2D electronic order or 1D helical spin order.
