1. BIG-Bench Extra Hard

Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in everyday applications, demanding robust general reasoning capabilities and diverse reasoning skillset. However, current LLM reasoning benchmarks predominantly focus on mathematical and coding abilities, leaving a gap in evaluating broader reasoning proficiencies. One particular exception is the BIG-Bench dataset, which has served as a crucial benchmark for evaluating the general reasoning capabilities of LLMs, thanks to its diverse set of challenging tasks that allowed for a comprehensive assessment of general reasoning across various skills within a unified framework. However, recent advances in LLMs have led to saturation on BIG-Bench, and its harder version BIG-Bench Hard (BBH). State-of-the-art models achieve near-perfect scores on many tasks in BBH, thus diminishing its utility. To address this limitation, we introduce BIG-Bench Extra Hard (BBEH), a new benchmark designed to push the boundaries of LLM reasoning evaluation. BBEH replaces each task in BBH with a novel task that probes a similar reasoning capability but exhibits significantly increased difficulty. We evaluate various models on BBEH and observe a (harmonic) average accuracy of 9.8\% for the best general-purpose model and 44.8\% for the best reasoning-specialized model, indicating substantial room for improvement and highlighting the ongoing challenge of achieving robust general reasoning in LLMs. We release BBEH publicly at: https://github.com/google-deepmind/bbeh.

2. FocusDD: Real-World Scene Infusion for Robust Dataset Distillation

Abstract: Dataset distillation has emerged as a strategy to compress real-world datasets for efficient training. However, it struggles with large-scale and high-resolution datasets, limiting its practicality. This paper introduces a novel resolution-independent dataset distillation method Focus ed Dataset Distillation (FocusDD), which achieves diversity and realism in distilled data by identifying key information patches, thereby ensuring the generalization capability of the distilled dataset across different network architectures. Specifically, FocusDD leverages a pre-trained Vision Transformer (ViT) to extract key image patches, which are then synthesized into a single distilled image. These distilled images, which capture multiple targets, are suitable not only for classification tasks but also for dense tasks such as object detection. To further improve the generalization of the distilled dataset, each synthesized image is augmented with a downsampled view of the original image. Experimental results on the ImageNet-1K dataset demonstrate that, with 100 images per class (IPC), ResNet50 and MobileNet-v2 achieve validation accuracies of 71.0% and 62.6%, respectively, outperforming state-of-the-art methods by 2.8% and 4.7%. Notably, FocusDD is the first method to use distilled datasets for object detection tasks. On the COCO2017 dataset, with an IPC of 50, YOLOv11n and YOLOv11s achieve 24.4% and 32.1% mAP, respectively, further validating the effectiveness of our approach.

3. Quantum vorticity: a not so effective field theory

Abstract: We provide a comprehensive picture for the formulation of the perfect fluid in the modern effective field theory formalism at both the classical and quantum level. Due to the necessity of decomposing the hydrodynamical variables $(\rho, p, u^\mu)$ into other internal degrees of freedom, the procedure is inherently not unique. We discuss and compare the different inequivalent formulations. These theories possess a peculiarity: the presence of an infinite dimensional symmetry implying a vanishing dispersion relation $\omega = 0$ for the transverse modes. This sets the stage for UV-IR mixing in the quantum theory, which we study in the different formulations focussing on the incompressible limit. We observe that the dispersion relation gets modified by quantum effects to become $\omega \propto \mathbf{k}^2$, where the fundamental excitations can be viewed as vortex-anti-vortex pairs. The spectrum exhibits infinitely many types of degenerate quanta. The unusual sensitivity to UV quantum fluctuations renders the implementation of the defining infinite symmetry somewhat subtle. 4. Make Satire Boring Again: Reducing Stylistic Bias of Satirical Corpus by Utilizing Generative LLMs

Abstract: Satire detection is essential for accurately extracting opinions from textual data and combating misinformation online. However, the lack of diverse corpora for satire leads to the problem of stylistic bias which impacts the models' detection performances. This study proposes a debiasing approach for satire detection, focusing on reducing biases in training data by utilizing generative large language models. The approach is evaluated in both cross-domain (irony detection) and cross-lingual (English) settings. Results show that the debiasing method enhances the robustness and generalizability of the models for satire and irony detection tasks in Turkish and English. However, its impact on causal language models, such as Llama-3.1, is limited. 5. Multimodal Fact-Checking with Vision Language Models: A Probing Classifier based Solution with Embedding Strategies

Abstract: This study evaluates the effectiveness of Vision Language Models (VLMs) in representing and utilizing multimodal content for fact-checking. To be more specific, we investigate whether incorporating multimodal content improves performance compared to text-only models and how well VLMs utilize text and image information to enhance misinformation detection. Furthermore we propose a probing classifier based solution using VLMs. Our approach extracts embeddings from the last hidden layer of selected VLMs and inputs them into a neural probing classifier for multi-class veracity classification. Through a series of experiments on two fact-checking datasets, we demonstrate that while multimodality can enhance performance, fusing separate embeddings from text and image encoders yielded superior results compared to using VLM embeddings. Furthermore, the proposed neural classifier significantly outperformed KNN and SVM baselines in leveraging extracted embeddings, highlighting its effectiveness for multimodal fact-checking., Comment: Accepted to COLING2025

6. The dynamical enhancement of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in lattice Anderson impurity model

Abstract: We propose a new route to generate an interband Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in metals from solely microscopic perspective. The system consists of conduction band electrons in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling which are coupled to a $f(d)$-type localized and interacting electrons. The double occupancy in the $f$-band is penalized by a significant Coulomb interaction energy, $U$. When the hybridization between two bands is not strictly local, it leads an alternative pathway to a spin Hamiltonian that may proliferate the formation of Skyrmion textures. The effective spin Hamiltonian is derived using the Schriffer-Wolff perturbation theory. In addition to a Kondo spin exchange interaction between conduction band spins and $f(d)$-band spins, which is denoted as $\vec{s}_m \cdot \vec{S}_n$, the spin Hamiltonian admits a {\bf Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya} spin coupling term, $\vec{s}_m \times \vec{S}_n$. The magnitude of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term is approximately ten to hundred times smaller than that of the Kondo term under physically relevant assumptions. The magnitude of spin coupling terms can be engineered using time-dependent external fields, motivating a generalization to a effective time-dependent Hamiltonian. In this respect, the perturbative derivation is extended to include time-dependent external field using a time-dependent SW transformation. The form of the effective spin Hamiltonian is retained while the spin coupling coefficients gain time dependence. It has been shown that the DM term acquires a new energy scale, which leads to an enhancement of one to two orders of magnitude and makes it comparable to the Kondo coupling., Comment: 11 pages

7. Boundary terms in string field theory

Abstract: We supplement the string field theory action with boundary terms to make its variational principle well-posed. Central to our considerations is the violation of the stress-energy tensor conservation in non-compact CFTs due to the boundary terms. This manifests as the failure of the cyclicity of the BRST operator, which encodes the target space integration by parts identities at the level of the worldsheet. Using this failure, we argue that the free closed string field theory action admits a well-posed variational principle upon including an additional boundary contribution. We explicitly work out the resulting action up to the massless level and show that it is related to the expansion of the low-energy effective string action endowed with the Gibbons-Hawking-York term on a flat background. 8. PokeFlex: A Real-World Dataset of Volumetric Deformable Objects for Robotics

Abstract: Data-driven methods have shown great potential in solving challenging manipulation tasks; however, their application in the domain of deformable objects has been constrained, in part, by the lack of data. To address this lack, we propose PokeFlex, a dataset featuring real-world multimodal data that is paired and annotated. The modalities include 3D textured meshes, point clouds, RGB images, and depth maps. Such data can be leveraged for several downstream tasks, such as online 3D mesh reconstruction, and it can potentially enable underexplored applications such as the real-world deployment of traditional control methods based on mesh simulations. To deal with the challenges posed by real-world 3D mesh reconstruction, we leverage a professional volumetric capture system that allows complete 360{\deg} reconstruction. PokeFlex consists of 18 deformable objects with varying stiffness and shapes. Deformations are generated by dropping objects onto a flat surface or by poking the objects with a robot arm. Interaction wrenches and contact locations are also reported for the latter case. Using different data modalities, we demonstrated a use case for our dataset training models that, given the novelty of the multimodal nature of Pokeflex, constitute the state-of-the-art in multi-object online template-based mesh reconstruction from multimodal data, to the best of our knowledge. 9. Adaptation Odyssey in LLMs: Why Does Additional Pretraining Sometimes Fail to Improve?

Abstract: In the last decade, the generalization and adaptation abilities of deep learning models were typically evaluated on fixed training and test distributions. Contrary to traditional deep learning, large language models (LLMs) are (i) even more overparameterized, (ii) trained on unlabeled text corpora curated from the Internet with minimal human intervention, and (iii) trained in an online fashion. These stark contrasts prevent researchers from transferring lessons learned on model generalization and adaptation in deep learning contexts to LLMs. To this end, our short paper introduces empirical observations that aim to shed light on further training of already pretrained language models. Specifically, we demonstrate that training a model on a text domain could degrade its perplexity on the test portion of the same domain. We observe with our subsequent analysis that the performance degradation is positively correlated with the similarity between the additional and the original pretraining dataset of the LLM. Our further token-level perplexity observations reveals that the perplexity degradation is due to a handful of tokens that are not informative about the domain. Abstract: We introduce Michelangelo: a minimal, synthetic, and unleaked long-context reasoning evaluation for large language models which is also easy to automatically score. This evaluation is derived via a novel, unifying framework for evaluations over arbitrarily long contexts which measure the model's ability to do more than retrieve a single piece of information from its context. The central idea of the Latent Structure Queries framework (LSQ) is to construct tasks which require a model to ``chisel away'' the irrelevant information in the context, revealing a latent structure in the context. To verify a model's understanding of this latent structure, we query the model for details of the structure. Using LSQ, we produce three diagnostic long-context evaluations across code and natural-language domains intended to provide a stronger signal of long-context language model capabilities. We perform evaluations on several state-of-the-art models and demonstrate both that a) the proposed evaluations are high-signal and b) that there is significant room for improvement in synthesizing long-context information.

11. Topological recursion for hyperbolic string field theory

Abstract: We derive an analog of Mirzakhani's recursion relation for hyperbolic string vertices and investigate its implications for closed string field theory. Central to our construction are systolic volumes: the Weil-Petersson volumes of regions in moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces whose elements have systoles $L \geq 0$. These volumes can be shown to satisfy a recursion relation through a modification of Mirzakhani's recursion as long as $L \leq 2 \sinh^{-1} 1$. Applying the pants decomposition of Riemann surfaces to off-shell string amplitudes, we promote this recursion to hyperbolic string field theory and demonstrate the higher order vertices are determined by the cubic vertex iteratively for any background. Such structure implies the solutions of closed string field theory obey a quadratic integral equation. 12. Benchmarking with Supernovae: A Performance Study of the FLASH Code

Abstract: Astrophysical simulations are computation, memory, and thus energy intensive, thereby requiring new hardware advances for progress. Stony Brook University recently expanded its computing cluster "SeaWulf" with an addition of 94 new nodes featuring Intel Sapphire Rapids Xeon Max series CPUs. We present a performance and power efficiency study of this hardware performed with FLASH: a multi-scale, multi-physics, adaptive mesh-based software instrument. We extend this study to compare performance to that of Stony Brook's Ookami testbed which features ARM-based A64FX-700 processors, and SeaWulf's AMD EPYC Milan and Intel Skylake nodes. Our application is a stellar explosion known as a thermonuclear (Type Ia) supernova and for this 3D problem, FLASH includes operators for hydrodynamics, gravity, and nuclear burning, in addition to routines for the material equation of state. We perform a strong-scaling study with a 220 GB problem size to explore both single- and multi-node performance. Our study explores the performance of different MPI mappings and the distribution of processors across nodes. Abstract: Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems are powered by foundation models. This paper presents a new set of foundation models, called Llama 3. It is a herd of language models that natively support multilinguality, coding, reasoning, and tool usage. Our largest model is a dense Transformer with 405B parameters and a context window of up to 128K tokens. This paper presents an extensive empirical evaluation of Llama 3. We find that Llama 3 delivers comparable quality to leading language models such as GPT-4 on a plethora of tasks. We publicly release Llama 3, including pre-trained and post-trained versions of the 405B parameter language model and our Llama Guard 3 model for input and output safety. The paper also presents the results of experiments in which we integrate image, video, and speech capabilities into Llama 3 via a compositional approach. We observe this approach performs competitively with the state-of-the-art on image, video, and speech recognition tasks. The resulting models are not yet being broadly released as they are still under development.

Abstract: Gram staining has been one of the most frequently used staining protocols in microbiology for over a century, utilized across various fields, including diagnostics, food safety, and environmental monitoring. Its manual procedures make it vulnerable to staining errors and artifacts due to, e.g., operator inexperience and chemical variations. Here, we introduce virtual Gram staining of label-free bacteria using a trained deep neural network that digitally transforms darkfield images of unstained bacteria into their Gram-stained equivalents matching brightfield image contrast. After a one-time training effort, the virtual Gram staining model processes an axial stack of darkfield microscopy images of label-free bacteria (never seen before) to rapidly generate Gram staining, bypassing several chemical steps involved in the conventional staining process. We demonstrated the success of the virtual Gram staining workflow on label-free bacteria samples containing Escherichia coli and Listeria innocua by quantifying the staining accuracy of the virtual Gram staining model and comparing the chromatic and morphological features of the virtually stained bacteria against their chemically stained counterparts. 16. Scaling Sign Language Translation

Abstract: Sign language translation (SLT) addresses the problem of translating information from a sign language in video to a spoken language in text. Existing studies, while showing progress, are often limited to narrow domains and/or few sign languages and struggle with open-domain tasks. In this paper, we push forward the frontier of SLT by scaling pretraining data, model size, and number of translation directions. We perform large-scale SLT pretraining on different data including 1) noisy multilingual YouTube SLT data, 2) parallel text corpora, and 3) SLT data augmented by translating video captions to other languages with off-the-shelf machine translation models. We unify different pretraining tasks with task-specific prompts under the encoder-decoder architecture, and initialize the SLT model with pretrained (m/By)T5 models across model sizes. SLT pretraining results on How2Sign and FLEURS-ASL#0 (ASL to 42 spoken languages) demonstrate the significance of data/model scaling and cross-lingual cross-modal transfer, as well as the feasibility of zero-shot SLT. We finetune the pretrained SLT models on 5 downstream open-domain SLT benchmarks covering 5 sign languages. Experiments show substantial quality improvements over the vanilla baselines, surpassing the previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) by wide margins.

Abstract: We explore the use of long-context capabilities in large language models to create synthetic reading comprehension data from entire books. Previous efforts to construct such datasets relied on crowd-sourcing, but the emergence of transformers with a context size of 1 million or more tokens now enables entirely automatic approaches. Our objective is to test the capabilities of LLMs to analyze, understand, and reason over problems that require a detailed comprehension of long spans of text, such as questions involving character arcs, broader themes, or the consequences of early actions later in the story. We propose a holistic pipeline for automatic data generation including question generation, answering, and model scoring using an ``Evaluator''. We find that a relative approach, comparing answers between models in a pairwise fashion and ranking with a Bradley-Terry model, provides a more consistent and differentiating scoring mechanism than an absolute scorer that rates answers individually. We also show that LLMs from different model families produce moderate agreement in their ratings. We ground our approach using the manually curated NarrativeQA dataset, where our evaluator shows excellent agreement with human judgement and even finds errors in the dataset. Using our automatic evaluation approach, we show that using an entire book as context produces superior reading comprehension performance compared to baseline no-context (parametric knowledge only) and retrieval-based approaches.

20. Spectral Tuning of Polarization Selective Reflections Bands in GLAD deposited HfAlN chiral sculptured thin films

Abstract: We present the first report on fabrication of Hafnium aluminum nitride chiral sculptured thin films (CSTFs) using reactive magnetron sputtering in a glancing angle deposition configuration, and the analysis of its optical polarization properties. The resulting CSTFs were designed to give interference extrema or so-called circular Bragg (CB) resonances at desired wavelengths in the region from 370 to 690 nm. This was achieved by tailoring the growth of the chiral thin films to obtain a dielectric pitch between 87 and 260.9 nm. The spectral positions of the obtained CB resonances were compared to values from analytical expressions. Contrary to the common case where the dielectric pitch is half of the growth-related rotational pitch due to a 180{\deg} symmetry, this pitch was shown to be the same as the rotational pitch. It is concluded that this is due to the c-axis of the CSTF being tilted about 45{\deg} from the substrate normal. The morphology and crystallographic characterizations were done using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively, while the tilt of the crystal lattice was corroborated using X-ray diffraction pole figures. The optical response from the CSTFs was analyzed using Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry from which the degree of circular polarization at the CB resonances was obtained. In addition, a strong non-reciprocal reflection was observed which could be attributed to the helicoidal morphology and the intrinsic crystal tilt. An optical layered model of the chiral structure including azimuthal twist and using the Cauchy dispersion relations was used to simulate the Mueller matrix elements and compare with the ellipsometry measurements. The correlation between the simulated and experimental data gave information of the morphological parameters of the CSTF and its optical properties.

Abstract: Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is a critical protein in cancer cell growth that signifies the aggressiveness of breast cancer (BC) and helps predict its prognosis. Accurate assessment of immunohistochemically (IHC) stained tissue slides for HER2 expression levels is essential for both treatment guidance and understanding of cancer mechanisms. Nevertheless, the traditional workflow of manual examination by board-certified pathologists encounters challenges, including inter- and intra-observer inconsistency and extended turnaround times. Here, we introduce a deep learning-based approach utilizing pyramid sampling for the automated classification of HER2 status in IHC-stained BC tissue images. Our approach analyzes morphological features at various spatial scales, efficiently managing the computational load and facilitating a detailed examination of cellular and larger-scale tissue-level details. This method addresses the tissue heterogeneity of HER2 expression by providing a comprehensive view, leading to a blind testing classification accuracy of 84.70%, on a dataset of 523 core images from tissue microarrays. Abstract: In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

23. Cross-Lingual Learning vs. Low-Resource Fine-Tuning: A Case Study with Fact-Checking in Turkish

Abstract: The rapid spread of misinformation through social media platforms has raised concerns regarding its impact on public opinion. While misinformation is prevalent in other languages, the majority of research in this field has concentrated on the English language. Hence, there is a scarcity of datasets for other languages, including Turkish. To address this concern, we have introduced the FCTR dataset, consisting of 3238 real-world claims. This dataset spans multiple domains and incorporates evidence collected from three Turkish fact-checking organizations. Additionally, we aim to assess the effectiveness of cross-lingual transfer learning for low-resource languages, with a particular focus on Turkish. We demonstrate in-context learning (zero-shot and few-shot) performance of large language models in this context. 24. When Scaling Meets LLM Finetuning: The Effect of Data, Model and Finetuning Method

Abstract: While large language models (LLMs) often adopt finetuning to unlock their capabilities for downstream applications, our understanding on the inductive biases (especially the scaling properties) of different finetuning methods is still limited. To fill this gap, we conduct systematic experiments studying whether and how different scaling factors, including LLM model size, pretraining data size, new finetuning parameter size and finetuning data size, affect the finetuning performance. We consider two types of finetuning -- full-model tuning (FMT) and parameter efficient tuning (PET, including prompt tuning and LoRA), and explore their scaling behaviors in the data-limited regime where the LLM model size substantially outweighs the finetuning data size. Based on two sets of pretrained bilingual LLMs from 1B to 16B and experiments on bilingual machine translation and multilingual summarization benchmarks, we find that 1) LLM finetuning follows a powerbased multiplicative joint scaling law between finetuning data size and each other scaling factor; 2) LLM finetuning benefits more from LLM model scaling than pretraining data scaling, and PET parameter scaling is generally ineffective; and 3) the optimal finetuning method is highly task- and finetuning data-dependent. Furthermore, studies on what deep neural models pay attention to when making predictions have increased in recent years. While significant progress has been made in this field, it has not yet reached a level of reasoning comparable to human reasoning. To address these gaps, we propose a multi-task explainable neural model for misinformation detection. Specifically, this work formulates an explanation generation process of the model's veracity prediction as a text summarization problem. Additionally, the performance of the proposed model is discussed on publicly available datasets and the findings are evaluated with related studies.

Abstract: This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract: In this paper, we empirically study the optimization dynamics of multi-task learning, particularly focusing on those that govern a collection of tasks with significant data imbalance. We present a simple yet effective method of pre-training on high-resource tasks, followed by fine-tuning on a mixture of high/low-resource tasks. We provide a thorough empirical study and analysis of this method's benefits showing that it achieves consistent improvements relative to the performance trade-off profile of standard static weighting. We analyze under what data regimes this method is applicable and show its improvements empirically in neural machine translation (NMT) and multi-lingual language modeling.

28. Contact Structures on Folded Sums of Contact Mapping Tori and Surface Bundles

Abstract: We introduce a ''folded sum operation'' which glues two compact mapping tori along their common (diffeomorphic) boundaries. We call the resulting closed manifold a ''folded sum of mapping tori'', and it naturally fibers over the circle. We show that any folded sum $M$ of two ''contact'' mapping tori (their fibers are compact exact symplectic manifolds with contactomorphic convex boundaries) admits a cooriented contact structure which is ''compatible'' (in a certain sense) with the resulting fibration map from $M$ onto the circle. Moreover, we study the tightness of the resulting contact structure on $M$ for certain cases. This gives a new method of constructing closed contact manifolds in any odd dimension. In particular, it recovers some earlier constructions and results. 29. Wilsonian effective potentials and closed string field theory

Abstract: We investigate Wilsonian effective field theory as a model for the construction of the tachyon potential and nonperturbative vacua in closed string field theory. In a number of cases we are able to find the effective potential exactly, and observe what appear to be universal features. We find that the effective field theory contains the same nonperturbative vacuum structure as the bare Lagrangian, though this information is encoded less efficiently as the distance scale of the effective field theory is increased. The implication is that closed string field theory plausibly contains information about the nonperturbative vacuum structure of string theory, in spite of its similarities to effective field theory. We also truncate the effective potential at a fixed power of the field and investigate how the global structure of the effective potential may be approximated via Pad\'e resummation. 30. SurfFlow: high-throughput surface energy calculations for arbitrary crystals

Abstract: We introduce SurfFlow, an open-source high-throughput workflow package designed for automated first-principles calculations of surface energies in arbitrary crystals. Our package offers a comprehensive solution capable of handling multi-element crystals, nonstoichiometric compositions, and asymmetric slabs, for all potential terminations. To streamline the computational process, SurfFlow employs an efficient pre-screening method that discards surfaces with suspected high surface energy before conducting resource-intensive density functional theory computations. The results generated are seamlessly compiled into an optimade-compliant database, ensuring easy access and compatibility. Additionally, a user-friendly web interface facilitates workflow submission and management, provides result visualization, and enables the examination of Wulff shapes. Abstract: This paper tests the validity of a digital trace database (Politus) obtained from Twitter, with a recently conducted representative social survey, focusing on the use case of religiosity in Turkey. Religiosity scores in the research are extracted using supervised machine learning under the Politus project. The validation analysis depends on two steps. First, we compare the performances of two alternative tweet-to-user transformation strategies, and second, test for the impact of resampling via the MRP technique. Estimates of the Politus are examined at both aggregate and region-level. The results are intriguing for future research on measuring public opinion via social media data.

33. Compatible Relative Lefschetz Fibrations On Admissible Relative Stein Pairs

Abstract: For more than two decades it has been known that any compact Stein surface (of real dimension four) admits a compatible Lefschetz fibration over a two-disk. More recently, Giroux and Pardon have generalized this result by giving a complex geometric proof for the existence of compatible Lefschetz fibrations on Stein domains of any even dimension. As a preparatory step in proving the former, Akbulut and Ozbagci have shown that there exist infinitely many pairwise non-equivalent Lefschetz fibrations on the four-ball by using a result of Lyon constructing fibrations on the complements of (p,q)-torus links in the three-sphere. In this paper, we first extend this result to obtain compatible Lefschetz fibrations on the six-ball whose pages are (p, q, 2)-Brieskorn varieties, and then construct a compatible 'relative' Lefschetz fibrations on any Stein domain (of dimension six) which admit a certain ('admissible') 'relative Stein pair' structure. Abstract: We consider correlators for the flux of energy and charge in the background of operators with large global $U(1)$ charge in conformal field theory (CFT). It has recently been shown that the corresponding Euclidean correlators generically admit a semiclassical description in terms of the effective field theory (EFT) for a conformal superfluid. We adapt the semiclassical description to Lorentzian observables and compute the leading large charge behavior of the flux correlators in general $U(1)$ symmetric CFTs. We discuss the regime of validity of the large charge EFT for these Lorentzian observables and the subtleties in extending the EFT approach to subleading corrections. 35. The CHSH Test is Sufficient to Observe the KCBS-Type Quantum Contextuality

Abstract: In this work, we show that the well-known Bell test called Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) does not only exhibit non-locality but also the KCBS-type contextuality. For this purpose, we investigate the symmetric subgroup of two-qubit states corresponding to qutrit states (three-level quantum states), which exhibit the KCBS-type (non-)contextuality. Later, we apply the CHSH test to them and find a new non-contextuality bound for this test. This shows us that the CHSH inequality can be modified by changing the limit to use it as a KCBS-type contextuality test. Also, the number of measurements required is four, less than the number of measurements in the KCBS test (That is five).

Abstract: We introduce MADLAD-400, a manually audited, general domain 3T token monolingual dataset based on CommonCrawl, spanning 419 languages. We discuss the limitations revealed by self-auditing MADLAD-400, and the role data auditing had in the dataset creation process. We then train and release a 10.7B-parameter multilingual machine translation model on 250 billion tokens covering over 450 languages using publicly available data, and find that it is competitive with models that are significantly larger, and report the results on different domains. Abstract: Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) can improve the quality of large language model's (LLM) outputs by aligning them with human preferences. We propose a simple algorithm for aligning LLMs with human preferences inspired by growing batch reinforcement learning (RL), which we call Reinforced Self-Training (ReST). Given an initial LLM policy, ReST produces a dataset by generating samples from the policy, which are then used to improve the LLM policy using offline RL algorithms. ReST is more efficient than typical online RLHF methods because the training dataset is produced offline, which allows data reuse. While ReST is a general approach applicable to all generative learning settings, we focus on its application to machine translation. Abstract: Automatic evaluation of machine translation (MT) is a critical tool driving the rapid iterative development of MT systems. While considerable progress has been made on estimating a single scalar quality score, current metrics lack the informativeness of more detailed schemes that annotate individual errors, such as Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM). In this paper, we help fill this gap by proposing AutoMQM, a prompting technique which leverages the reasoning and in-context learning capabilities of large language models (LLMs) and asks them to identify and categorize errors in translations. We start by evaluating recent LLMs, such as PaLM and PaLM-2, through simple score prediction prompting, and we study the impact of labeled data through in-context learning and finetuning. 40. CNN-BiLSTM model for English Handwriting Recognition: Comprehensive Evaluation on the IAM Dataset

Abstract: We present a CNN-BiLSTM system for the problem of offline English handwriting recognition, with extensive evaluations on the public IAM dataset, including the effects of model size, data augmentation and the lexicon. Our best model achieves 3.59\% CER and 9.44\% WER using CNN-BiLSTM network with CTC layer. Test time augmentation with rotation and shear transformations applied to the input image, is proposed to increase recognition of difficult cases and found to reduce the word error rate by 2.5\% points. We also conduct an error analysis of our proposed method on IAM dataset, show hard cases of handwriting images and explore samples with erroneous labels. We provide our source code as public-domain, to foster further research to encourage scientific reproducibility.

41. Block-State Transformers

Abstract: State space models (SSMs) have shown impressive results on tasks that require modeling long-range dependencies and efficiently scale to long sequences owing to their subquadratic runtime complexity. Originally designed for continuous signals, SSMs have shown superior performance on a plethora of tasks, in vision and audio; however, SSMs still lag Transformer performance in Language Modeling tasks. In this work, we propose a hybrid layer named Block-State Transformer (BST), that internally combines an SSM sublayer for long-range contextualization, and a Block Transformer sublayer for short-term representation of sequences. We study three different, and completely parallelizable, variants that integrate SSMs and block-wise attention. We show that our model outperforms similar Transformer-based architectures on language modeling perplexity and generalizes to longer sequences. Abstract: Hyperbolic geometry on the one-bordered torus is numerically uniformized using Liouville theory. This geometry is relevant for the hyperbolic string tadpole vertex describing the one-loop quantum corrections of closed string field theory. We argue that the Lam\'e equation, upon fixing its accessory parameter via Polyakov conjecture, provides the input for the characterization. The explicit expressions for the Weil-Petersson metric as well as the local coordinates and the associated vertex region for the tadpole vertex are given in terms of classical torus conformal blocks. 43. Cross-Lingual Supervision improves Large Language Models Pre-training

Abstract: The recent rapid progress in pre-training Large Language Models has relied on using self-supervised language modeling objectives like next token prediction or span corruption. On the other hand, Machine Translation Systems are mostly trained using cross-lingual supervision that requires aligned data between source and target languages. We demonstrate that pre-training Large Language Models on a mixture of a self-supervised Language Modeling objective and the supervised Machine Translation objective, therefore including cross-lingual parallel data during pre-training, yields models with better in-context learning abilities. As pre-training is a very resource-intensive process and a grid search on the best mixing ratio between the two objectives is prohibitively expensive, we propose a simple yet effective strategy to learn it during pre-training.

Abstract: We introduce PaLM 2, a new state-of-the-art language model that has better multilingual and reasoning capabilities and is more compute-efficient than its predecessor PaLM. PaLM 2 is a Transformer-based model trained using a mixture of objectives. Through extensive evaluations on English and multilingual language, and reasoning tasks, we demonstrate that PaLM 2 has significantly improved quality on downstream tasks across different model sizes, while simultaneously exhibiting faster and more efficient inference compared to PaLM. This improved efficiency enables broader deployment while also allowing the model to respond faster, for a more natural pace of interaction. PaLM 2 demonstrates robust reasoning capabilities exemplified by large improvements over PaLM on BIG-Bench and other reasoning tasks. PaLM 2 exhibits stable performance on a suite of responsible AI evaluations, and enables inference-time control over toxicity without additional overhead or impact on other capabilities. Overall, PaLM 2 achieves state-of-the-art performance across a diverse set of tasks and capabilities. When discussing the PaLM 2 family, it is important to distinguish between pre-trained models (of various sizes), fine-tuned variants of these models, and the user-facing products that use these models. In particular, user-facing products typically include additional pre- and post-processing steps. Additionally, the underlying models may evolve over time. Therefore, one should not expect the performance of user-facing products to exactly match the results reported in this report.

45. GENIE-NF-AI: Identifying Neurofibromatosis Tumors using Liquid Neural Network (LTC) trained on AACR GENIE Datasets

Abstract: In recent years, the field of medicine has been increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to provide faster and more accurate disease detection, prediction, and assessment. In this study, we propose an interpretable AI approach to diagnose patients with neurofibromatosis using blood tests and pathogenic variables. We evaluated the proposed method using a dataset from the AACR GENIE project and compared its performance with modern approaches. Our proposed approach outperformed existing models with 99.86% accuracy. We also conducted NF1 and interpretable AI tests to validate our approach. Our work provides an explainable approach model using logistic regression and explanatory stimulus as well as a black-box model. The explainable models help to explain the predictions of black-box models while the glass-box models provide information about the best-fit features. 46. Read-once machines and the thermodynamic complexity of Maxwell's demons

Abstract: The thermodynamical costs imposed by computational resource limitations like memory and time have been investigated before. We focus on a new computational limitation, namely, the machine being allowed to scan the input only once, and prove that it is associated with unavoidable thermodynamical cost, even in the presence of infinite time and memory resources. We identify this limitation to be the one suffered by Maxwell's demons. This provides a framework for quantifying the complexity associated with an experiment that effectuates a "decrease" in the entropy of a thermodynamic system.

47. UniMax: Fairer and more Effective Language Sampling for Large-Scale Multilingual Pretraining

Abstract: Pretrained multilingual large language models have typically used heuristic temperature-based sampling to balance between different languages. However previous work has not systematically evaluated the efficacy of different pretraining language distributions across model scales. In this paper, we propose a new sampling method, UniMax, that delivers more uniform coverage of head languages while mitigating overfitting on tail languages by explicitly capping the number of repeats over each language's corpus. We perform an extensive series of ablations testing a range of sampling strategies on a suite of multilingual benchmarks, while varying model scale. We find that UniMax outperforms standard temperature-based sampling, and the benefits persist as scale increases. As part of our contribution, we release: (i) an improved and refreshed mC4 multilingual corpus consisting of 29 trillion characters across 107 languages, and (ii) a suite of pretrained umT5 model checkpoints trained with UniMax sampling.

48. Bilex Rx: Lexical Data Augmentation for Massively Multilingual Machine Translation

Abstract: Neural machine translation (NMT) has progressed rapidly over the past several years, and modern models are able to achieve relatively high quality using only monolingual text data, an approach dubbed Unsupervised Machine Translation (UNMT). However, these models still struggle in a variety of ways, including aspects of translation that for a human are the easiest - for instance, correctly translating common nouns. This work explores a cheap and abundant resource to combat this problem: bilingual lexica. We test the efficacy of bilingual lexica in a real-world set-up, on 200-language translation models trained on web-crawled text. We present several findings: (1) using lexical data augmentation, we demonstrate sizable performance gains for unsupervised translation; (2) we compare several families of data augmentation, demonstrating that they yield similar improvements, and can be combined for even greater improvements; (3) we demonstrate the importance of carefully curated lexica over larger, noisier ones, especially with larger models; and (4) we compare the efficacy of multilingual lexicon data versus human-translated parallel data. Finally, we open-source GATITOS (available at https://github.com/google-research/url-nlp/tree/main/gatitos), a new multilingual lexicon for 26 low-resource languages, which had the highest performance among lexica in our experiments.

50. Bootstrapping closed string field theory

Abstract: The determination of the string vertices of closed string field theory is shown to be a conformal field theory problem solvable by combining insights from Liouville theory, hyperbolic geometry, and conformal bootstrap. We first demonstrate how Strebel differentials arise from hyperbolic string vertices by performing a WKB approximation to the associated Fuchsian equation, which we subsequently use it to derive a Polyakov-like conjecture for Strebel differentials. This result implies that the string vertices are generated by the interactions of $n$ zero momentum tachyons, or equivalently, a certain limit of suitably regularized on-shell Liouville action. We argue that the latter can be related to the interaction of three zero momentum tachyons on a generalized cubic vertex through classical conformal blocks.
