$\alpha$ decay is one of the prominent decay modes in the nucleosynthesis of heavy and super-heavy elements synthesized at temperatures of the order of Giga Kelvin. To facilitate the investigation of the role played by the $\alpha$ decay half-lives of thermally excited nuclei in nucleosynthesis calculations, an empirical formula based on a model for the $\alpha$ decay of nuclei in their ground and excited states to daughter nuclei in their ground or excited states is presented. Constants appearing in the analytical expression for the $\alpha$ decay half-life obtained within the model are treated as adjustable parameters and fitted to experimental data on 342 $\alpha$ decays in the range of 82 $\le Z_p \le$ 94, to obtain an excitation energy-dependent decay law. Under the assumption that thermal equilibrium has been reached between nuclear states, temperature ($T$)-dependent half-lives, $t_{1/2}(T)$, for several of the experimentally studied $\alpha$ emitters with 65 $\le Z_p \le$ 94 are presented using available data on the half-lives of excited nuclei. Though the general trend is a decrease in $t_{1/2}(T)$ at elevated temperatures, exceptional cases with increased half-lives are found in the case of some isomeric states. A list of such isomers provided in this work motivates future work involving considerations of their thermal equilibration and role in shaping kilonova light curves., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

A universal decay law (UDL) for light cluster decay of excited nuclei is formulated by fitting the UDL half-lives to those evaluated within an excitation energy-dependent double folding model (DFM). The half-lives are evaluated within a preformed cluster model. The excitation energy dependence is introduced both in the energy of the emitted cluster and in the interaction potential through the density distributions of the interacting nuclei. The half-lives are found to decrease when the difference between the excitation energies of the parent and daughter nuclei, $\Delta E^{*} > $ 0, increases, with the reduction being a few orders of magnitude for higher values of $\Delta E^{*}$. This can be of importance for nucleosynthesis calculations of heavy elements formed in extremely hot environments, as well as in highly energetic heavy-ion collisions. The UDL for excited nuclei is used to provide an estimate of the enhancement in the cluster decay rates of thermally excited nuclei such as those produced in r-process nucleosynthesis.

It is common to study the strong decay of a heavy nucleus as a tunneling phenomenon where the $\alpha$ ($^4$He) or a light nuclear cluster tunnels through the Coulomb barrier formed by its interaction with the heavier daughter nucleus. The position and width of the Coulomb barrier are determined by the total interaction potential between the two daughter nuclei. We examine the effects of including nonlocality and deformation in the interaction potential by calculating the half-lives, $t_{1/2}$, and thereby phenomenological preformation factors of several nuclei which have the possibility of decaying by emitting either an $\alpha$ or a light nuclear cluster. The effect of deformation manifests itself by a decrease in $t_{1/2}$ for all the decays studied. The effect of nonlocality is studied within two different models of the nuclear potential: the energy-independent but angular momentum ($l$) dependent Mumbai (M) potential and the energy-dependent Perey-Buck (PB) potential. The nonlocal nuclear interaction leads to a decrease in all half-lives studied. Though the decrease is larger due to the Perey-Buck potential, half-lives evaluated using the Mumbai potential show a strong sensitivity to the $l$ value in the decay. This feature of the $\alpha$ and cluster decay half-lives can provide a complementary tool in addition to scattering data which are more commonly used to fix the parameters of a nonlocal potential in literature., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

In the present work we discuss the propagation of excitons across a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice, which possesses both harmonic oscillations and weak quartic anharmonicities. When quantizing these vibrational degrees of freedom we identify several phonon-conserving nonlinearities, each one with a different impact on the excitonic transport. Our analysis identifies a dominant nonlinear correction to the phonon hopping which leads to a strong enhancement of exciton conduction compared to a purely linear vibrational dynamics. Thus quartic lattice nonlinearities can be exploited to induce transitions from localized to delocalized transport, even for very weak amplitudes., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures
