The discovery of novel quantum materials within ternary phase spaces containing antagonistic pair such as Fe with Bi, Pb, In, and Ag, presents significant challenges yet holds great potential. In this work, we investigate the stabilization of these immiscible pairs through the integration of Cerium (Ce), an abundant rare-earth and cost-effective element. By employing a machine learning (ML)-guided framework, particularly crystal graph convolutional neural networks (CGCNN), combined with first-principles calculations, we efficiently explore the composition/structure space and predict 9 stable and 37 metastable Ce-Fe-X (X=Bi, Pb, In and Ag) ternary compounds. Our findings include the identification of multiple new stable and metastable phases, which are evaluated for their structural and energetic properties. These discoveries not only contribute to the advancement of quantum materials but also offer viable alternatives to critical rare earth elements, underscoring the importance of Ce-based intermetallic compounds in technological applications.

We prove that the group of isometries preserving a metric foliation on a closed Alexandrov space $X$, or a singular Riemannian foliation on a manifold $M$ is a closed subgroup of the isometry group of $X$ in the case of a metric foliation, or of the isometry group of $M$ for the case of a singular Riemannian foliation. Radiology reporting is a complex task that requires detailed image understanding, integration of multiple inputs, including comparison with prior imaging, and precise language generation. This makes it ideal for the development and use of generative multimodal models. Here, we extend report generation to include the localisation of individual findings on the image - a task we call grounded report generation. Prior work indicates that grounding is important for clarifying image understanding and interpreting AI-generated text. Therefore, grounded reporting stands to improve the utility and transparency of automated report drafting. To enable evaluation of grounded reporting, we propose a novel evaluation framework - RadFact - leveraging the reasoning capabilities of large language models (LLMs). RadFact assesses the factuality of individual generated sentences, as well as correctness of generated spatial localisations when present. We introduce MAIRA-2, a large multimodal model combining a radiology-specific image encoder with a LLM, and trained for the new task of grounded report generation on chest X-rays. MAIRA-2 uses more comprehensive inputs than explored previously: the current frontal image, the current lateral image, the prior frontal image and prior report, as well as the Indication, Technique and Comparison sections of the current report. Nasogastric tubes (NGTs) are feeding tubes that are inserted through the nose into the stomach to deliver nutrition or medication. If not placed correctly, they can cause serious harm, even death to patients. Recent AI developments demonstrate the feasibility of robustly detecting NGT placement from Chest X-ray images to reduce risks of sub-optimally or critically placed NGTs being missed or delayed in their detection, but gaps remain in clinical practice integration. In this study, we present a human-centered approach to the problem and describe insights derived following contextual inquiry and in-depth interviews with 15 clinical stakeholders. The interviews helped understand challenges in existing workflows, and how best to align technical capabilities with user needs and expectations. We discovered the trade-offs and complexities that need consideration when choosing suitable workflow stages, target users, and design configurations for different AI proposals. We explored how to balance AI benefits and risks for healthcare staff and patients within broader organizational and medical-legal constraints. We also identified data issues related to edge cases and data biases that affect model training and evaluation; how data documentation practices influence data preparation and labelling; and how to measure relevant AI outcomes reliably in future evaluations. We discuss how our work informs design and development of AI applications that are clinically useful, ethical, and acceptable in real-world healthcare services.

The development and use of large-scale quantum computers relies on integrating quantum error-correcting (QEC) schemes into the quantum computing pipeline. A fundamental part of the QEC protocol is the decoding of the syndrome to identify a recovery operation with a high success rate. In this work, we implement a decoder that finds the recovery operation with the highest success probability by mapping the decoding problem to a spin system and using Population Annealing to estimate the free energy of the different error classes. We study the decoder performance on a 4.8.8 color code lattice under different noise models, including code capacity with bit-flip and depolarizing noise, and phenomenological noise, which considers noisy measurements, with performance reaching near-optimal thresholds. This decoding algorithm can be applied to a wide variety of stabilizer codes, including surface codes and quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

Methods for clustering people into construals--social affinity groups of individuals who share similarities in how they organize their outlooks on a collection of issues--have recently gained traction. Relational Class Analysis (RCA) is currently the most commonly used method for construal clustering. RCA has been applied to identify affinity groups in social spheres as varied as politics, musical preferences, and attitudes towards science. In this study, we highlight limitations in RCA's ability to accurately identify the number and underlying structure of construals. These limitations stem from RCA's mathematical underpinnings and its insensitivity to the bipolar structure of the survey items, which require respondents to place themselves in a support or rejection space and then express the intensity of their support or rejection. We develop an alternative method, which we call Bipolar Class Analysis (BCA), that aims to address this foundational limitation. BCA conceptualizes people's attitudinal positions as moving along support/rejection semispaces and assesses similarity in opinion organization by taking into account position switches across these semispaces. We conduct extensive simulation analyses, with data organized around different construals, to demonstrate that BCA clusters individuals more accurately than RCA and other available alternatives. We also replicate previous analyses to show that BCA leads to substantively different empirical results than those produced by RCA in its original and later versions, and by Correlational Clustering Analysis (CCA), a method that has been proposed as an alternative to RCA.

Recent advances in AI combine large language models (LLMs) with vision encoders that bring forward unprecedented technical capabilities to leverage for a wide range of healthcare applications. Focusing on the domain of radiology, vision-language models (VLMs) achieve good performance results for tasks such as generating radiology findings based on a patient's medical image, or answering visual questions (e.g., 'Where are the nodules in this chest X-ray?'). However, the clinical utility of potential applications of these capabilities is currently underexplored. We engaged in an iterative, multidisciplinary design process to envision clinically relevant VLM interactions, and co-designed four VLM use concepts: Draft Report Generation, Augmented Report Review, Visual Search and Querying, and Patient Imaging History Highlights. We studied these concepts with 13 radiologists and clinicians who assessed the VLM concepts as valuable, yet articulated many design considerations. Language-supervised pre-training has proven to be a valuable method for extracting semantically meaningful features from images, serving as a foundational element in multimodal systems within the computer vision and medical imaging domains. However, resulting features are limited by the information contained within the text. This is particularly problematic in medical imaging, where radiologists' written findings focus on specific observations; a challenge compounded by the scarcity of paired imaging-text data due to concerns over leakage of personal health information. In this work, we fundamentally challenge the prevailing reliance on language supervision for learning general purpose biomedical imaging encoders. We introduce RAD-DINO, a biomedical image encoder pre-trained solely on unimodal biomedical imaging data that obtains similar or greater performance than state-of-the-art biomedical language supervised models on a diverse range of benchmarks. Specifically, the quality of learned representations is evaluated on standard imaging tasks (classification and semantic segmentation), and a vision-language alignment task (text report generation from images). To further demonstrate the drawback of language supervision, we show that features from RAD-DINO correlate with other medical records (e.g., sex or age) better than language-supervised models, which are generally not mentioned in radiology reports. Finally, we conduct a series of ablations determining the factors in RAD-DINO's performance; notably, we observe that RAD-DINO's downstream performance scales well with the quantity and diversity of training data, demonstrating that image-only supervision is a scalable approach for training a foundational biomedical image encoder.

Biomedical imaging datasets are often small and biased, meaning that real-world performance of predictive models can be substantially lower than expected from internal testing. This work proposes using generative image editing to simulate dataset shifts and diagnose failure modes of biomedical vision models; this can be used in advance of deployment to assess readiness, potentially reducing cost and patient harm. Existing editing methods can produce undesirable changes, with spurious correlations learned due to the co-occurrence of disease and treatment interventions, limiting practical applicability. To address this, we train a text-to-image diffusion model on multiple chest X-ray datasets and introduce a new editing method RadEdit that uses multiple masks, if present, to constrain changes and ensure consistency in the edited images. We consider three types of dataset shifts: acquisition shift, manifestation shift, and population shift, and demonstrate that our approach can diagnose failures and quantify model robustness without additional data collection, complementing more qualitative tools for explainable AI.

Superconductivity (SC) is absent in Cr-substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (CrBFA), a well-established but poorly understood topic. Additionally, the suppression of the spin density wave transition temperature ($T_{\text{SDW}}$) in CrBFA and Mn-substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (MnBFA) coincides as a function of Cr/Mn content, despite the distinct electronic effects of these substitutions. In this work, we employ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and combined density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory calculations (DFT+DMFT) to address the evolution of the Fermi surface (FS) and electronic correlations in CrBFA. Our findings reveal that incorporating Cr leads to an effective hole doping of the states near the FS, which is well described within the virtual crystal approximation (VCA). We analyzed the electronic band spectra with main $d_{yz}$-orbital character and found a fractional scaling of the imaginary part of self-energy as a function of the binding energy, a signature property of Hund's correlations. We conclude that CrBFA is a correlated electron system and the changes in the FS as a function of Cr are unrelated to the suppression of $T_{\text{SDW}}$. We present a radiology-specific multimodal model for the task for generating radiological reports from chest X-rays (CXRs). Our work builds on the idea that large language model(s) can be equipped with multimodal capabilities through alignment with pre-trained vision encoders. On natural images, this has been shown to allow multimodal models to gain image understanding and description capabilities. Our proposed model (MAIRA-1) leverages a CXR-specific image encoder in conjunction with a fine-tuned large language model based on Vicuna-7B, and text-based data augmentation, to produce reports with state-of-the-art quality. In particular, MAIRA-1 significantly improves on the radiologist-aligned RadCliQ metric and across all lexical metrics considered. Manual review of model outputs demonstrates promising fluency and accuracy of generated reports while uncovering failure modes not captured by existing evaluation practices. The recent success of general-domain large language models (LLMs) has significantly changed the natural language processing paradigm towards a unified foundation model across domains and applications. In this paper, we focus on assessing the performance of GPT-4, the most capable LLM so far, on the text-based applications for radiology reports, comparing against state-of-the-art (SOTA) radiology-specific models. Exploring various prompting strategies, we evaluated GPT-4 on a diverse range of common radiology tasks and we found GPT-4 either outperforms or is on par with current SOTA radiology models. With zero-shot prompting, GPT-4 already obtains substantial gains ($\approx$ 10% absolute improvement) over radiology models in temporal sentence similarity classification (accuracy) and natural language inference ($F_1$). For tasks that require learning dataset-specific style or schema (e.g. findings summarisation), GPT-4 improves with example-based prompting and matches supervised SOTA. Our extensive error analysis with a board-certified radiologist shows GPT-4 has a sufficient level of radiology knowledge with only occasional errors in complex context that require nuanced domain knowledge. In recent years, the field of autonomous driving has witnessed remarkable advancements, driven by the integration of a multitude of sensors, including cameras and LiDAR systems, in different prototypes. However, with the proliferation of sensor data comes the pressing need for more sophisticated information processing techniques. This research paper introduces a novel modification to an object detection network that uses camera and lidar information, incorporating an additional branch designed for the task of re-identifying objects across adjacent cameras within the same vehicle while elevating the quality of the baseline 3D object detection outcomes. The proposed methodology employs a two-step detection pipeline: initially, an object detection network is employed, followed by a 3D box estimator that operates on the filtered point cloud generated from the network's detections. Extensive experimental evaluations encompassing both 2D and 3D domains validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the results underscore the superiority of this method over traditional Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) techniques, with an improvement of more than 5\% in the car category in the overlapping areas.

We extend basic results in $3$-manifold topology to general three-dimensional Alexandrov spaces (or Alexandrov $3$-spaces for short), providing a unified framework for manifold and non-manifold spaces. We generalize the connected sum to non-manifold $3$-spaces and prove a prime decomposition theorem, exhibit an infinite family of closed, prime non-manifold $3$-spaces which are not irreducible, and establish a conjecture of Mitsuishi and Yamaguchi on the structure of closed, simply-connected Alexandrov $3$-spaces with non-negative curvature. Additionally, we define a notion of generalized Dehn surgery for Alexandrov $3$-spaces and show that any closed Alexandrov $3$-space may be obtained by performing generalized Dehn surgery on a link in $S^3$ or the non-trivial $S^2$-bundle over $S^1$. Chemical substitution is commonly used to explore new ground states in materials, yet the role of disorder is often overlooked. In Mn-substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (MnBFA), superconductivity (SC) is absent, despite being observed for nominal hole-doped phases. Instead, a glassy magnetic phase emerges, associated with the $S=5/2$ Mn local spins. In this work, we present a comprehensive investigation of the electronic structure of MnBFA using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We find that Mn causes a small and orbital-specific reduction of the electron pockets, only partially disrupting nesting conditions. Based upon the analysis of the spectral properties, we observe, for all bands, an increase in the electronic scattering rate as a function of Mn content. This is interpreted as increasing band incoherence, which we propose as the primary contributor to the suppression of the magnetic order in MnBFA. This finding connects the MnBFA electronic band structure properties to the glassy magnetic behavior observed in these materials and suggests that SC is absent because of the collective magnetic impurity behavior that scatters the Fe-derived excitations. Additionally, our analysis shows that the binding energy ($E_{B}$) dependence of the imaginary part of the self-energy [$\text{Im}\Sigma(E_{B})$] is best described by a fractional scaling ($\text{Im}\Sigma(E_{B})\propto\sqrt{-E_{B}}$). These results indicate that Mn tunes MnBFA into an electronic disordered phase between the correlated Hund's metal in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and the Hund's insulator in BaMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$., Comment: main 8 pages, 5 figures + supp 5 pages, 4 figures

We express the total space of a principal circle bundle over a connected sum of two manifolds in terms of the total spaces of circle bundles over each summand, provided certain conditions hold. We introduce a novel Region-based contrastive pretraining for Medical Image Retrieval (RegionMIR) that demonstrates the feasibility of medical image retrieval with similar anatomical regions. RegionMIR addresses two major challenges for medical image retrieval i) standardization of clinically relevant searching criteria (e.g., anatomical, pathology-based), and ii) localization of anatomical area of interests that are semantically meaningful. In this work, we propose an ROI image retrieval image network that retrieves images with similar anatomy by extracting anatomical features (via bounding boxes) and evaluate similarity between pairwise anatomy-categorized features between the query and the database of images using contrastive learning. ROI queries are encoded using a contrastive-pretrained encoder that was fine-tuned for anatomy classification, which generates an anatomical-specific latent space for region-correlated image retrieval. During retrieval, we compare the anatomically encoded query to find similar features within a feature database generated from training samples, and retrieve images with similar regions from training samples. We evaluate our approach on both anatomy classification and image retrieval tasks using the Chest ImaGenome Dataset. Our proposed strategy yields an improvement over state-of-the-art pretraining and co-training strategies, from 92.24 to 94.12 (2.03%) classification accuracy in anatomies. We qualitatively evaluate the image retrieval performance demonstrating generalizability across multiple anatomies with different morphology.

Label scarcity is a bottleneck for improving task performance in specialised domains. We propose a novel compositional transfer learning framework (DoT5 - domain compositional zero-shot T5) for zero-shot domain transfer. Without access to in-domain labels, DoT5 jointly learns domain knowledge (from MLM of unlabelled in-domain free text) and task knowledge (from task training on more readily available general-domain data) in a multi-task manner. To improve the transferability of task training, we design a strategy named NLGU: we simultaneously train NLG for in-domain label-to-data generation which enables data augmentation for self-finetuning and NLU for label prediction. We evaluate DoT5 on the biomedical domain and the resource-lean subdomain of radiology, focusing on NLI, text summarisation and embedding learning. DoT5 demonstrates the effectiveness of compositional transfer learning through multi-task learning. In particular, DoT5 outperforms the current SOTA in zero-shot transfer by over 7 absolute points in accuracy on RadNLI. Combinatorial optimization problems are ubiquitous in industry. In addition to finding a solution with minimum cost, problems of high relevance involve a number of constraints that the solution must satisfy. Variational quantum algorithms have emerged as promising candidates for solving these problems in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum stage. However, the constraints are often complex enough to make their efficient mapping to quantum hardware difficult or even infeasible. An alternative standard approach is to transform the optimization problem to include these constraints as penalty terms, but this method involves additional hyperparameters and does not ensure that the constraints are satisfied due to the existence of local minima. In this paper, we introduce a new method for solving combinatorial optimization problems with challenging constraints using variational quantum algorithms. We propose the Multi-Objective Variational Constrained Optimizer (MOVCO) to classically update the variational parameters by a multiobjective optimization performed by a genetic algorithm. This optimization allows the algorithm to progressively sample only states within the in-constraints space, while optimizing the energy of these states. We test our proposal on a real-world problem with great relevance in finance: the Cash Management problem. We introduce a novel mathematical formulation for this problem, and compare the performance of MOVCO versus a penalty based optimization. Self-supervised learning in vision-language processing exploits semantic alignment between imaging and text modalities. Prior work in biomedical VLP has mostly relied on the alignment of single image and report pairs even though clinical notes commonly refer to prior images. This does not only introduce poor alignment between the modalities but also a missed opportunity to exploit rich self-supervision through existing temporal content in the data. In this work, we explicitly account for prior images and reports when available during both training and fine-tuning. Our approach, named BioViL-T, uses a CNN-Transformer hybrid multi-image encoder trained jointly with a text model. It is designed to be versatile to arising challenges such as pose variations and missing input images across time. The resulting model excels on downstream tasks both in single- and multi-image setups, achieving state-of-the-art performance on (I) progression classification, (II) phrase grounding, and (III) report generation, whilst offering consistent improvements on disease classification and sentence-similarity tasks. We release a novel multi-modal temporal benchmark dataset, MS-CXR-T, to quantify the quality of vision-language representations in terms of temporal semantics. We study certain inequalities and a related result on weighted Sobolev spaces on bounded John domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Namely, we prove the existence of a right inverse for the divergence operator, along with the corresponding a priori estimate, the improved and the fractional Poincar\'e inequalities, the Korn inequality and the local Fefferman-Stein inequality. All these results are obtained on weighted Sobolev spaces, where the weight is a power of the distance to the boundary. This work analyzes the performance of a downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communications system. To reduce hardware complexity and exploit antenna diversity, we consider a transmit antenna selection (TAS) scheme and equal-gain combining (EGC) receivers. Further, we consider Weibull-distributed fading channels to account for non-linearities of the propagation medium and to cover, as special cases, important fading scenarios such as Rayleigh and exponential models. Performance metrics such as the outage probability (OP) and the average bit error rate (ABER) are derived in an exact manner. An asymptotic analysis for the OP and for the ABER is also carried out. Moreover, we obtain exact expressions for the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Interestingly, our results indicate that, except for the first user (nearest user), in a high-SNR regime the ABER achieves a performance floor that depends solely on the user's power allocation coefficient and on the type of modulation, and not on the channel statistics or the amount of transmit and receive antennas. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no performance analyses have been reported in the literature for the considered scenario. In social robotics, endowing humanoid robots with the ability to generate bodily expressions of affect can improve human-robot interaction and collaboration, since humans attribute, and perhaps subconsciously anticipate, such traces to perceive an agent as engaging, trustworthy, and socially present. Robotic emotional body language needs to be believable, nuanced and relevant to the context. We implemented a deep learning data-driven framework that learns from a few hand-designed robotic bodily expressions and can generate numerous new ones of similar believability and lifelikeness. The framework uses the Conditional Variational Autoencoder model and a sampling approach based on the geometric properties of the model's latent space to condition the generative process on targeted levels of valence and arousal. The evaluation study found that the anthropomorphism and animacy of the generated expressions are not perceived differently from the hand-designed ones, and the emotional conditioning was adequately differentiable between most levels except the pairs of neutral-positive valence and low-medium arousal. We provide a general framework for constructing probability distributions on Riemannian manifolds, taking advantage of area-preserving maps and isometries. Control over distributions' properties, such as parameters, symmetry and modality yield a family of flexible distributions that are straightforward to sample from, suitable for use within Monte Carlo algorithms and latent variable models, such as autoencoders. As an illustration, we empirically validate our approach by utilizing our proposed distributions within a variational autoencoder and a latent space network model. The lack of annotated datasets is a major bottleneck for training new task-specific supervised machine learning models, considering that manual annotation is extremely expensive and time-consuming. To address this problem, we present MONAI Label, a free and open-source framework that facilitates the development of applications based on artificial intelligence (AI) models that aim at reducing the time required to annotate radiology datasets. Through MONAI Label, researchers can develop AI annotation applications focusing on their domain of expertise. It allows researchers to readily deploy their apps as services, which can be made available to clinicians via their preferred user interface. Currently, MONAI Label readily supports locally installed (3D Slicer) and web-based (OHIF) frontends and offers two active learning strategies to facilitate and speed up the training of segmentation algorithms. MONAI Label allows researchers to make incremental improvements to their AI-based annotation application by making them available to other researchers and clinicians alike. Additionally, MONAI Label provides sample AI-based interactive and non-interactive labeling applications, that can be used directly off the shelf, as plug-and-play to any given dataset. Significant reduced annotation times using the interactive model can be observed on two public datasets.

Recent developments in the synthesis of new magnetic materials lead to the discovery of new quantum paramagnets. Many of these materials, such as the perovskites Ba$_{4}$LnMn$_{4}$O$_{12}$ (Ln = Sc or Nb), Ba$_{3}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{8}$, and Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ present isolated magnetic clusters with strong intracluster interactions but weak intercluster interactions, which delays the onset of order to lower temperatures ($T$). This offset between the local energy scale and the magnetic ordering temperature is the hallmark of magnetic frustration. At sufficient high-$T$, the paramagnetic susceptibility ($\chi$) of frustrated cluster magnets can be fit to a Curie-Weiss law, but the derived microscopic parameters cannot in general be reconciled with those obtained from other methods. In this work, we present an analytical microscopic theory to obtain $\chi$ of dimer and trimer cluster magnets, the two most commonly found in literature, making use of suitable Heisenberg-type Hamiltonians. We also add intercluster interactions in a mean-field level, thus obtaining an expression to the critical temperature of the system and defining a new effective frustration parameter $f_{\text{eff}}$. A major challenge for the realisation of useful universal quantum computers is achieving high fidelity two-qubit entangling gate operations. However, calibration errors can affect the quantum gate operations and limit their fidelity. To reduce such errors it is desirable to have an analytical understanding and quantitative predictions of the effects that miscalibrations of gate parameters have on the gate performance. In this work, we study a systematic perturbative expansion in miscalibrated parameters of the Molmer-Sorensen entangling gate, which is widely used in trapped ion quantum processors. Our analytical treatment particularly focuses on systematic center line detuning miscalibrations. Via a unitary Magnus expansion, we compute the gate evolution operator which allows us to obtain relevant key properties such as relative phases, electronic populations, quantum state purity and fidelities. These quantities, subsequently, are used to assess the performance of the gate using the fidelity of entangled states as performance metric. We verify the predictions from our model by benchmarking them against measurements in a trapped-ion quantum processor. The performance of quantum gate operations is experimentally determined by how correct operational parameters can be determined and set, and how stable these parameters can be maintained. In addition, gates acting on different sets of qubits require unique sets of control parameters. Thus, an efficient multi-dimensional parameter estimation procedure is crucial to calibrate even medium sized quantum processors. Here, we develop and characterize an efficient calibration protocol to automatically estimate and adjust experimental parameters of the widely used Molmer-Sorensen entangling gate operation in a trapped ion quantum information processor. The protocol exploits Bayesian parameter estimation methods which includes a stopping criterion based on a desired gate infidelity. We experimentally demonstrate a median gate infidelity of $1.3(1)\cdot10^{-3}$, requiring only $1200\pm500$ experimental cycles, while completing the entire gate calibration procedure in less than one minute. Persistence diagrams are objects that play a central role in topological data analysis. In the present article, we investigate the local and global geometric properties of spaces of persistence diagrams. In order to do this, we construct a family of functors $\mathcal{D}_p$, $1\leq p \leq\infty$, that assign, to each metric pair $(X,A)$, a pointed metric space $\mathcal{D}_p(X,A)$. Moreover, we show that $\mathcal{D}_{\infty}$ is sequentially continuous with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of metric pairs, and we prove that $\mathcal{D}_p$ preserves several useful metric properties, such as completeness and separability, for $p \in [1,\infty)$, and geodesicity and non-negative curvature in the sense of Alexandrov, for $p=2$. For the latter case, we describe the metric of the space of directions at the empty diagram. We also show that the Fr\'echet mean set of a Borel probability measure on $\mathcal{D}_p(X,A)$, $1\leq p \leq\infty$, with finite second moment and compact support is non-empty. In this paper, we study certain inequalities and a related result for weighted Sobolev spaces on H\"older-$\alpha$ domains, where the weights are powers of the distance to the boundary. We obtain results regarding the divergence equation's solvability, and the improved Poincar\'e, the fractional Poincar\'e, and the Korn inequalities. The proofs are based on a local-to-global argument that involves a kind of atomic decomposition of functions and the validity of a weighted discrete Hardy-type inequality on trees. The novelty of our approach lies in the use of this weighted discrete Hardy inequality and a sufficient condition that allows us to study the weights of our interest. Kurdyka-{\L}ojasiewicz (K{\L}) functions are real-valued functions characterized by a differential inequality involving the norm of their gradient. This class of functions is quite rich, containing objects as diverse as subanalytic, transnormal or Morse functions. Detailed analysis of seizure semiology, the symptoms and signs which occur during a seizure, is critical for management of epilepsy patients. Inter-rater reliability using qualitative visual analysis is often poor for semiological features. Therefore, automatic and quantitative analysis of video-recorded seizures is needed for objective assessment. We present GESTURES, a novel architecture combining convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to learn deep representations of arbitrarily long videos of epileptic seizures. We use a spatiotemporal CNN (STCNN) pre-trained on large human action recognition (HAR) datasets to extract features from short snippets (approx. 0.5 s) sampled from seizure videos. We then train an RNN to learn seizure-level representations from the sequence of features. We curated a dataset of seizure videos from 68 patients and evaluated GESTURES on its ability to classify seizures into focal onset seizures (FOSs) (N = 106) vs. focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (TCSs) (N = 77), obtaining an accuracy of 98.9% using bidirectional long short-term memory (BLSTM) units. We demonstrate that an STCNN trained on a HAR dataset can be used in combination with an RNN to accurately represent arbitrarily long videos of seizures. In this paper, we provide a notion of $\infty$-bicategories fibred in $\infty$-bicategories which we call 2-Cartesian fibrations. Our definition is formulated using the language of marked biscaled simplicial sets: Those are scaled simplicial sets equipped with an additional collection of triangles containing the scaled 2-simplices, which we call lean triangles, in addition to a collection of edges containing all degenerate 1-simplices. We prove the existence of a left proper combinatorial simplicial model category whose fibrant objects are precisely the 2-Cartesian fibrations over a chosen scaled simplicial set $S$. Over the terminal scaled simplicial set, this provides a new model structure modeling $\infty$-bicategories, which we show is Quillen equivalent to Lurie's scaled simplicial set model. We conclude by providing a characterization of 2-Cartesian fibrations over an $\infty$-bicategory. This characterization then allows us to identify those 2-Cartesian fibrations arising as the coherent nerve of a fibration of $\operatorname{Set}^+_{\Delta}$-enriched categories, thus showing that our definition recovers the preexisting notions of fibred 2-categories., Comment: Comments welcome!

Accurate segmentation of brain resection cavities (RCs) aids in postoperative analysis and determining follow-up treatment. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are the state-of-the-art image segmentation technique, but require large annotated datasets for training. Annotation of 3D medical images is time-consuming, requires highly-trained raters, and may suffer from high inter-rater variability. Self-supervised learning strategies can leverage unlabeled data for training. We developed an algorithm to simulate resections from preoperative magnetic resonance images (MRIs). We performed self-supervised training of a 3D CNN for RC segmentation using our simulation method. We curated EPISURG, a dataset comprising 430 postoperative and 268 preoperative MRIs from 430 refractory epilepsy patients who underwent resective neurosurgery. We fine-tuned our model on three small annotated datasets from different institutions and on the annotated images in EPISURG, comprising 20, 33, 19 and 133 subjects. The model trained on data with simulated resections obtained median (interquartile range) Dice score coefficients (DSCs) of 81.7 (16.4), 82.4 (36.4), 74.9 (24.2) and 80.5 (18.7) for each of the four datasets. After fine-tuning, DSCs were 89.2 (13.3), 84.1 (19.8), 80.2 (20.1) and 85.2 (10.8). For comparison, inter-rater agreement between human annotators from our previous study was 84.0 (9.9). We present a self-supervised learning strategy for 3D CNNs using simulated RCs to accurately segment real RCs on postoperative MRI. Our method generalizes well to data from different institutions, pathologies and modalities. The performance of object detection methods based on LiDAR information is heavily impacted by the availability of training data, usually limited to certain laser devices. As a result, the use of synthetic data is becoming popular when training neural network models, as both sensor specifications and driving scenarios can be generated ad-hoc. However, bridging the gap between virtual and real environments is still an open challenge, as current simulators cannot completely mimic real LiDAR operation. To tackle this issue, domain adaptation strategies are usually applied, obtaining remarkable results on vehicle detection when applied to range view (RV) and bird's eye view (BEV) projections while failing for smaller road agents. In this paper, we present a BEV domain adaptation method based on CycleGAN that uses prior semantic classification in order to preserve the information of small objects of interest during the domain adaptation process. The quality of the generated BEVs has been evaluated using a state-of-the-art 3D object detection framework at KITTI 3D Object Detection Benchmark. In pulsed Doppler radars, the classic Chinese remainder theorem (CCRT) is a common method to resolve Doppler ambiguities caused by fast-moving targets. Another issue concerning high-velocity targets is related to the loss in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) after performing range compression. In particular, this loss can be partially mitigated by the use of subpulse processing (SP). Modern radars combine these techniques in order to reliably unfold the target velocity. However, the presence of background noise may compromise the Doppler estimates. Hence, a rigorous statistical analysis is imperative. In this work, we provide a comprehensive analysis on Doppler estimation. In particular, we derive novel closed-form expressions for the probability of detection (PD) and probability of false alarm (PFA). To this end, we consider the newly introduce SP along with the CCRT. A comparison analysis between SP and the classic pulse processing (PP) technique is also carried out. Numerical results and Monte-Carlo simulations corroborate the validity of our expressions and show that the SP-plus-CCRT technique helps to greatly reduce the PFA compared to previous studies, thereby improving radar detection., Comment: 11 pages, 17 figures

This paper addresses the standard generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detection problem of weak signals in background noise. In so doing, we consider a nonfluctuating target embedded in complex white Gaussian noise (CWGN), in which the amplitude of the target echo and the noise power are assumed to be unknown. Important works have analyzed the performance for the referred scenario and proposed GLRT-based detectors. Such detectors are projected at an early stage (i.e., prior to the formation of a post-beamforming scalar waveform), thereby imposing high demands on hardware, processing, and data storage. From a hardware perspective, most radar systems fail to meet these strong requirements. In fact, due to hardware and computational constraints, most radars use a combination of analog and digital beamformers (sums) before any estimation or further pre-processing. The rationale behind this study is to derive a GLRT detector that meets the hardware and system requirements. In this work, we design and analyze a more practical and easy-to-implement GLRT detector, which is projected after the analog beamforming. The performance of the proposed detector is analyzed and the probabilities of detection (PD) and false alarm (PFA) are derived in closed form. Moreover, we show that in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, the post-beamforming GLRT detector performs better than both the classic pre-beamforming GLRT detector and the square-law detector. This finding suggests that if the signals are weak, instead of processing the signals separately, we first must to reinforce the overall signal and then assembling the system's detection statistic. At last, the SNR losses are quantified, in which the superiority of the post-beamforming GLRT detector was evidenced as the number of antennas and samples increase., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

Most sensor setups for onboard autonomous perception are composed of LiDARs and vision systems, as they provide complementary information that improves the reliability of the different algorithms necessary to obtain a robust scene understanding. However, the effective use of information from different sources requires an accurate calibration between the sensors involved, which usually implies a tedious and burdensome process. We present a method to calibrate the extrinsic parameters of any pair of sensors involving LiDARs, monocular or stereo cameras, of the same or different modalities. The procedure is composed of two stages: first, reference points belonging to a custom calibration target are extracted from the data provided by the sensors to be calibrated, and second, the optimal rigid transformation is found through the registration of both point sets. The proposed approach can handle devices with very different resolutions and poses, as usually found in vehicle setups. In order to assess the performance of the proposed method, a novel evaluation suite built on top of a popular simulation framework is introduced. Experiments on the synthetic environment show that our calibration algorithm significantly outperforms existing methods, whereas real data tests corroborate the results obtained in the evaluation suite. Using graphs to model irregular information domains is an effective approach to deal with some of the intricacies of contemporary (network) data. A key aspect is how the data, represented as graph signals, depend on the topology of the graph. Widely-used approaches assume that the observed signals can be viewed as outputs of graph filters (i.e., polynomials of a matrix representation of the graph) whose inputs have a particular structure. Diffused graph signals, which correspond to an originally sparse (node-localized) signal percolated through the graph via filtering, fall into this class. In that context, this paper deals with the problem of jointly identifying graph filters and separating their (sparse) input signals from a mixture of diffused graph signals, thus generalizing to the graph signal processing framework the classical blind demixing (blind source separation) of temporal and spatial signals. We first consider the scenario where the supporting graphs are different across the signals, providing a theorem for demixing feasibility along with probabilistic bounds on successful recovery. Additionally, an analysis of the degenerate problem of demixing with a single graph is also presented. In this paper, we derive a highly accurate approximation for the probability of detection (PD) of a non-coherent detector operating with Weibull fluctuation targets. To do so, we assume a pulse-to-pulse decorrelation during the coherent processing interval (CPI). Specifically, the proposed approximation is given in terms of: i) a closed-form expression derived in terms of the Fox's H-function, for which we also provide a portable and efficient MATHEMATICA routine; and ii) a fast converging series obtained through a comprehensive calculus of residues. Both solutions are fast and provide very accurate results. In particular, our series representation, besides being a more tractable solution, also exhibits impressive savings in computational load and computation time compared to previous studies. In this paper, a multi-modal 360$^{\circ}$ framework for 3D object detection and tracking for autonomous vehicles is presented. The process is divided into four main stages. First, images are fed into a CNN network to obtain instance segmentation of the surrounding road participants. Second, LiDAR-to-image association is performed for the estimated mask proposals. Then, the isolated points of every object are processed by a PointNet ensemble to compute their corresponding 3D bounding boxes and poses. Lastly, a tracking stage based on Unscented Kalman Filter is used to track the agents along time. The solution, based on a novel sensor fusion configuration, provides accurate and reliable road environment detection. Resective surgery may be curative for drug-resistant focal epilepsy, but only 40% to 70% of patients achieve seizure freedom after surgery. Retrospective quantitative analysis could elucidate patterns in resected structures and patient outcomes to improve resective surgery. However, the resection cavity must first be segmented on the postoperative MR image. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are the state-of-the-art image segmentation technique, but require large amounts of annotated data for training. Annotation of medical images is a time-consuming process requiring highly-trained raters, and often suffering from high inter-rater variability. Self-supervised learning can be used to generate training instances from unlabeled data. We developed an algorithm to simulate resections on preoperative MR images. We curated a new dataset, EPISURG, comprising 431 postoperative and 269 preoperative MR images from 431 patients who underwent resective surgery. In addition to EPISURG, we used three public datasets comprising 1813 preoperative MR images for training. We trained a 3D CNN on artificially resected images created on the fly during training, using images from 1) EPISURG, 2) public datasets and 3) both. To evaluate trained models, we calculate Dice score (DSC) between model segmentations and 200 manual annotations performed by three human raters. The model trained on data with manual annotations obtained a median (interquartile range) DSC of 65.3 (30.6). The DSC of our best-performing model, trained with no manual annotations, is 81.7 (14.2). For comparison, inter-rater agreement between human annotators was 84.0 (9.9). Engineering of thermoelectric materials requires an understanding of thermal conduction by lattice and electronic degrees of freedom. Filled skutterudites denote a large family of materials suitable for thermoelectric applications where reduced lattice thermal conduction attributed to localized low-frequency vibrations (rattling) of filler cations inside large cages of the structure. In this work, a multi-wavelength method of exploiting X-ray dynamical diffraction in single crystals of CeFe$_4$P$_{12}$ is presented and applied to resolve the atomic amplitudes of vibrations.
